Great place for burgers and root beer, but the star of the show for me were the tater tots! They were fabulous - best ever. Heavenly. Caesar salad was surprisingly good, with lots of nice fresh grated Parmesan. The sweet potato fries were excellent, crinkle cut, crispy on the outside and tasty on the inside - yum! Atmosphere is plain Up North casual. Service was a bit slow for us. Overall, it makes our list of places to go whenever in the area and in the mood for a casual lunch.

Stopped here with my family after Sleeping Bear Dunes before hitting the beach. The food was good, and service was ok, but the prices were a bit high for basically pub burgers. The kids menu seemed especially overpriced for fries and popcorn chicken. I guess being the only show in town gives you the ability to raise your price. Overall it was decent food and we left full.

Looking forward to getting my growlers filled with root beer and sinking my teeth into some amazing burgers!!! Great hidden gem!

Great local restaurant. Playing oldies music on the juke box. Expertly handcrafted wooden booths. Courtney was a great server! Gave helpful advice about local hang outs. Tots were great, a bit oily. Water was cold and refreshing. Gluten free bun was a plus! Tasted great! Burger was cooked as requested. A bit pricey but nice ambience.

Totally unexpected gourmet salad delivered in a friendly atmosphere. Quinoa, kale, shaved Brussels sprouts and asparagus accompanied by heirloom tomatoes, served with a balsamic vinaigrette. I haven't seen anything like this in this area. A welcome change to the burgers and fries, but if you're into that, my fellow diners gave me a thumbs up to that too. Only complaint was bleu cheese dressing in place of bleu cheese crumbles. Family friendly and casual.

well worth the short drive from glen arbor, excellent food worthy of the hype. especially since every (and i mean every) restaurant in glen arbor is a study in mediocrity and tourist gouging prices. this really is the hidden (to some) gem that needs to be explored, instead of patronizing the awful restaurants of downtown glen arbor that are quick to take your money but not deliver in the taste or service department. will come back here every time we're in town or passing through.

Great burger. Daughter got a veggie item. Dinner was very satisfying. Will come back.

Chef Rik was awesome! We came in on an extremely busy night and sat at the bar. Glenn was our bartender - great guy. We watched Chef Rik carefully craft some awesome dinners. Rik was very friendly and explained how he prepared the various meals. We ordered his whitefish special and was blown away by the complexity of the flavors he was able to achieve with such a delicate fish. Great job Rik! Best food we have ever had. We will definitely be back!

Best burger in northern MI! Been to the others around area - these are the freshest and tastiest by a landslide!

Okay, the menu talks about being famous for their burgers. So do a lot of other menus in a lot of other restaurants. Believe me, none of the rest have anything left to brag about. This was an atrociously GOOD burger. Not a fancy burger. Not an 'upscale' or avant-garde burger. Not one filled with the latest California-based craze or Mediterranean atrocities. Just a real good burger! With really good home-brewed root beer. How much better can it be? I live about four hours away, and I WILL plan a morning trip up and an afternoon trip down just to have lunch here again. And I recommend it to you, too! Oh, it is a bar (if you missed it in the name) but now that we DON'T smoke in them it's just fine. Just sayin'.

Unfortunately, in a town of "finds", this place was not one. The homemade root beer was good, but the rest of the food was just ok. I ordered the turkey Boursin sandwich which was just ok and we also got the burger surf and turf with fried smelt. It was all just ok, nothing outstanding. Lunch for the 4 of us with just three meals (one of which was a kiddie meal) was $45. Very pricey for mediocre food at a hole in the wall.

After a great morning hiking Sleeping Bear Dunes, we were ready to relax with burger and a beer. What a great place...wish it were closer to home! Our server was super nice and very knowledgeable about their beers and very helpful with menu suggestions. I had the onion wing burger with smelts on the side, a local favorite. It may have been the best burger I have ever had. My wife had Rodeo Joe burger which was also great. Do not miss this place if ever in the area!!

Came here starving after a day at the beach. Our waitress brought us our menus and said she would be back to take our order. She never came back and instead went and sat at a table with her friends talking. After 20 minutes we asked another waitress to take our order. Our original waitress noticed and avoided eye contact with us for the rest of the night. She did serve the table next to us promptly. We're going to find somewhere else to eat for the rest of our labor day weekend.

I had the fish sandwich and Tequila Sunrise and both were really good. I just wish they had other options for sides. Customer service was fabulous. I would certainly come back if I am in the area.

Burger - centric tavern with outrageous prices. Ordered two basic cheeseburgers for $12.50 each...specialty burgers ran $14.50. I don't even spend that much in Chicago. Burgers well cooked, but still not worth the price tag. On top of that service was poor. Server forgot my beer (but planned to charge me), and then charged us $14.50 each for our burgers. She said she was having a rough night, but I couldn't help feeling like they tried to swindle us. After visiting more restaurants in the area on our trip this place was easily forgettable. Many other burger options in the area charging half the price.

Stopped in after our trip to the dunes. Awesome and quick service- they have gluten free buns (and bread) and I was able to get their burger and my fiancé had the turkey avocado sandwich. Both were delicious!!

This seems to be the popular spot in town and lives up to the 'friendly' in its name. Service was fast friendly and was served hot. Good variety on their menu from salads veggie sandwich to hamburgers, beef dip or fish. Thought it a little on the pricey side but the food was good. Can be noisy with if there is a large group.

Great food....our entire party had burgers & they were delicious!!! My gauge for a good restaurant is the quality of their soup & the bean soup here was terrific! If you are looking for the quintessential Atmosphere of a great "upnorth" bar..thus is it. Enjoy!!!

  • Xiao Z.

The burgers taste good. We ordered the blue cheese burger, gourmet burger and Swiss mushroom burger. For some reason one of the burger meat was cooked so rare in the center. After we let the waitress know that, she just kindly offered us a free dessert which taste very good as well. I would recommend this place for its great burgers to anyone who is looking for a near restaurant after the dune climb.

We have loved eating at Joe's through the years but we walked out yesterday. We are shocked and dismayed at the massive change in prices, someone has gotten too greedy. Sorry Joe's, we won't be back, you've lost a loyal summer customer.

Great food...but way expensive. $61 for lunch for two adults and 2 kids. Sandwiches and kids meals. Probably won't go again but glad we tried it! Should read $$$

    (3)
  • Jeanne E.

The food was delicious and fresh. There were many vegetarian options. The homemade root beer was delicious. Our kids said it was the best French fries ever! Lots of varieties of craft beer. The beer, however is pricey as are the kids meals. We were expecting reasonably priced food but found Joe's to be somewhat pricey. When put into context however, that you are near one of the best beaches around, we definitely will go back.

  • George N.

Great food, but way overpriced so only 3 stars. Sorry but a $17 burger for lunch is ridiculous. Great burgers, lots of great choices. Smelt appetizer was excellent, highly recommended. Kids loved draft root beer, and I loved the beer selections.

WOW! I traveled the northern Michigan area with my friends for two weeks, stopping at a few dozens places to eat along the way and this was the most expensive meal for what we got of anywhere we went! It was good, yes, but I don't know if it was worth the steep price. Most of us got the burgers because the staff told us they were legendary, however, we were kind of disappointed. They were definitely good but nothing super amazing and certainly not totally worth the $11 and something cents I paid with no sides. I actually wanted a salad as my side but the waitress told me that would be an extra up charge. I'm sorry, but in what world does a small pile of lettuce cost more than the pile of onion rings my friends got for no up charge. Even the salads were $11-14 each. I was stunned. I've never been to a simple BAR that's been that pricey. The only other place we found that had salad prices that high was a fancy, five-star Italian dive priced for $13 for a full 12" wide plate stuffed with chicken, lettuce, and etc. The owner boasts that the extremely high cost is because you can get literally any side with your burger (onion rings, etc) for no extra up charge with your burgers. I don't understand why you would then be squeezing more money out of those who only want an inexpensive side though. It doesn't work like this at any other restaurant and I feel like that's for a reason. On notes about the dining experience itself, the restaurant seemed pretty clean. The bathroom was out of both paper towels and soap. The staff seemed very friendly but for some reason, the waitress we had seemingly refused to refill my drinks. I ordered a soda and a water because I was super thirsty. I had my soda gone within about 10 minutes and in another 10 before my water was gone too. Neither got refilled throughout the whole time we were there. My friends got their teas refilled and when I asked for a refill near the end of the meal, she said okay but never came back. The food was good but I don't think I'll be coming back. As somebody who doesn't usually order sides with their meal, it makes no sense to me why only $3 is deducted off the price of the meal if each one is clearly labeled as being $4-$5 each and lettuce is apparently as valuable as gold.

Joes' Friendly Tavern has reached that inevitable point that I believe many family owned businesses face: Continue to offer great food and service at fair prices -- or jump the shark and gouge the consumer, impose punitive pricing on the tourists and eating public and never look back as your bank balances swell. Joe's Friendly Tavern has clearly decided to profit upon its eating public at any expense. Do not come here if you remotely appreciate fairness or value. Having come here for years, my last visit with my family will be our last. Pricing is not just high, it's extreme. $15.50 for a hamburger? $11.95 for a single beer battered fish stick with three orange wedges. A BLT for almost $11 dollars. My family of four walked out of a lunch with a bill approaching $85 dollars. For an old folksy diner. This is not "Fine Dining" by any stretch. Yes, the food is decent, but at these prices I might as well go to a fine dining restaurant in Glen Arbor and pay virtually the same price and be served on white linens with highly attentive staff. If Joe's can get back to its original fair and value pricing, we'd be back in heart beat. Unfortunately, the price of enjoying this establishment is now beyond our reach.

On a recent vacation in Traverse City, we tried a variety dining venues from casual tavern to fine dining. Of all these, Joe's was my favorite. We stopped for lunch on our way to the the Dune, drawn by the promise of a walleye sandwich. We left with big smiles on our faces. There's an extensive menu of burgers, sandwiches, salads and sides, but we were on a mission for walleye. We each had a "fried" (actually sautéed) walleye sandwich. I had waffle fries, and my companion had coleslaw. The sandwiches were superb: fresh & tender, served with lettuce & tomato on a brioche bun. The coleslaw was commendable: not too creamy, not too tart. For me, though, the waffle fries were truly amazing. I love good frites, and these were tied for the best I've ever had (the other top frites were double-fried in duck fat at the now-defunct Chicago restaurant, Tournesol). Fresh potato, cut to the perfect thickness, crisp & brown, lightly salted -- if this is what heaven would be like, I'd return to the Church. And the last frite was 99% as good as the first. On a scale of 1 to 5, the waffle fries were a 6. I can't give Joe's 5*, because it's just a tavern, but I am definitely a fan. The service was congenial, the food delicious, and though there were only two draft beers, the one I had was delicious and perfectly suited to our meal. We were there for lunch on a weekday; I can imagine Joe's is a zoo on weekends during the tourist season. However, I would go 25 miles out of my way for those frites, and I hope to return to the area someday to indulge myself again.

Hey this is a just a tavern, the cheapest hamburger they have is $12. We had 2 cups of chili and a glass of wine and one beer, for $21.75! Yikes guys, we like your place but whomever is setting the big prices should rethink it! We actually witnessed a couple walk out without ordering because the prices are quite outrageous! Good quality is very good, prices too high!

  • Jeff M.

Had many good meals here growing up. Decided to skip glen arbor restaurants and check out this place for a change. Honestly, was a tad disappointed with the meal. A bacon & bleu cheeseburger was $14.50 (incl. side). Overall food was pretty good, but be prepared for somewhat steep prices. Management is responsive to any concerns, which is a plus.

  • Ricky S.

Joe's gets two stars because they clearly price-gouge their customers. This place is right near the Sleeping Bear Dunes welcome center, and they sure like seeing the tourists roll into town. We ordered a small chicken caesar salad (no side dish), french dip sandwich (no side dish), zucchini fries, and two bloody mary's....$60 out the door. Food was good, but price was insulting.

Good bar food, great for families. We came after hanging at the beach in Empire. Service was attentive and friendly. They make everything in house, good ingredients and fresh. Come with the kiddos and bring some money for the jukebox!

We had the Friendly burger. Meat is ground fresh daily at Joe's. Wow! Baja. burger rocked! Super friendly and fast waitstaff, great local bar atmosphere. Afterwards, hit the great beach at Empire or take am amazing hike on empire bluff, trailhead just up the street from Joe's!

After a day at the Dunes, our large family of 17 was extremely hungry. We had stopped into another restaurant in town and were told that we would have to wait an hour and a half. My mother in law mentioned Joe's, having been there before, so we drove on over. Upon entering Joe's, I was expecting run of the mill bar food. I was happy to be proven wrong. My fiance', a self proclaimed burger snob, said several times how good the burger was and he does not say that often. I had a grilled cheese and garlic potato soup (chilly day) and both warmed me up quite nicely! I also had a local beer (can't remember the name of it), which was really yummy. Our server was really great and easily accommodated our enormous party. I really recommend Joe's to anyone in the area.

Lunch. The food was pretty good but WAYYYY overpriced for the portions and quality. We had two adult drinks, two adult meals, two kids meals, and one shared dessert. Our cost was $78. I know its a seasonal place due to tourist traffic being heavier in the summer but it still seemed like this place was expensive. The place was friendly, homey, and good in every other way.

  • Miranda W.

Tourist spot! Had a nice grilled chicken sandwich on a pretzel bun. Unfornutely our server forgot to give us the honey mustard and 1000 island sauce we got on the side- we had to ask. My moms burger was well done not medium rare. We didnt know the sweet potatoe fries were not included- only on the plate. The server was a little dismissive but the hostess was nice. Overall it's pricey because its next to sleeping bear dunes, the portions are okay. Not very memorable and a bit pricey but Probably the greatest food you'll get in the area!!

We stayed for a few nights in Empire within walking distance of this place, and thought we would definitely check it out. However, we changed out mind after stopping here for a quick beer on the way back from the beach. I want to be fair as we did not eat here-so I pick 3 stars. That might change if we came back-higher or lower-we just didn't based on our first impression. It's a dumpy sort of place with some booths and big stained glass lamps overhead. When we got there, the wait staff was sitting in the center of the restaurant at a big round table counting money. It must have been a change of shifts, but can't they do this somewhere else-kinda tacky. Beer prices are absolutely ridiclious. But, you won't realise that until you get your check as they are not posted at the bar or listed on the menu. We each ordered a pint, and it cost us SIXTEEN dollars!!! That was 6.50 for each plus tax and tip. I'm glad we didn't go for a second round. So, as we felt so ripped off, we didn't go back later for dinner. Not so Friendly.

Love this place! Great food, great service. Looks like nothing special, but wait 'til you try the food. One of the best burgers I've had, ever. Daily specials are always a winner. I bought my family here on their vacation (over from England) and they loved it, went back a few times during our stay. Stop and get a burger, you won't regret it!

This is a great little spot. The menu and food is interesting. I had the grilled cheese, apple, honey sandwich with sweet potato fries. Excellent! Root beer is on tap in the bar and is delicious. Full bar too, of course.

Great spot!! We only found this joint this year after coming up many times. Great burgers. Definitely opt for the pretzel bun. Sweet potato fries and tater tots also great. Ordered dinner salad and had them add fried perch-also great. Homemade salad dressings, grind their beef in house for burgers, super fast service. Brew their own root beer which was unavailable. Will definitely return

You ready for this? Best burger I've ever had in my life. And I've eaten a lot of burgers. That's all you need to know about this place. Go get you a burger!

Usually stopping in the winter months, but ran in for breakfast last weekend. The breakfasts are great and served quickly. Had the Cornbeef hash and eggs! Large portions cooked perfect. Friendly's also featured beer on tap brewed with local Empire Hops! I tried the grapefruit beer ( with breakfast) it was great! Keep supporting the local products! :) If you are anywhere near Empire, MI You have to stop in! You will not be disappointed

I stopped in Joe's during a recent vacation to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. (What can I say, I'm predisposed to try any restaurant featuring my moniker.) I was merely whelmed with the first visit, and on the second visit the whelmingness I felt dropped to underwhelmed. First trip: Breakfast. It was good. I had corned beef hash - my vacation breakfast of choice. It was a solid, hearty meal and the waitress was nice and attentive. The bill came and it was a little higher than I expected, but I used to live in a tourist-driven area, and I know that prices are sometimes jacked up to help the businesses get through the rest of the tourist-sparse year. Second trip: Lunch. I had the burger and the fried smelt. Heavy, heavy breading on the smelt. Burger was nothing special, but the price was. Everything we got there was priced high, but not to move. My daughter's small milk was $2. The small salad my wife got was over $5. I'm not adverse to paying these prices - heck I was on vacation - but the food didn't match up. If you're really hungry this isn't a terrible place to go, but it pales in comparison to the pizza shop right up the street, adjacent to Gemma's. Skip this place and skip up the street - I promise you won't be disappointed.

It's an annual trek for my clan - a trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes followed by burgers at Joe's. Great atmosphere & burgers. Nice beer selection. Excellent root beer on draft for the under 21 set. Try the surf & turf which in these parts means a burger and half pound of smelt. Great onion rings and sweet potato fries, too.

    (4)
  • Brad S.

The kids like the nachos. I end up here a couple of times a year and every time it's pretty much the same. If it's busy at all, the service is slow. The food is good if your really hungry and in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

  • Dominique K.

This is a quintessentially "up north" bar, perfect for this quirky little northern Michigan town. Joe's is usually packed in the summer with large family groups and tourists, but go during the winter and it's a whole 'nother vibe. Visit Joe's about February and you'll find mostly locals in the winter who wander in and grab their own personal mugs from a rack on the back wall and stop by the coffee pot to fill 'em up before wandering over to the bar. We've been hitting Joe's for years when we make it up to the area, and I've found it to be a great place to stop for a burger and a cold beer on a hot summer day or just the place to go for a hot bowl of soup on the coldest winter night. Best bets are burgers or the smelt appetizer (best to share).

    (4)
  • Becca M.

I have been frequenting Joe's since I was little, very little. I used to love to come here after a day at the beach with my family and my grandma and I used to always split a giant burrito. But when we came in the winter it was always a burger and chili. They have the BEST chili. I promise. Now I mix the two and get the Texan, which is a chili cheeseburger. It's simply the best thing on the menu. The prices are little ridiculous these days, but all the local bars prices out there have gone up, so I deal with it. I am recently on a horrible diet of no lactose and no gluten, so last time i got the vegetarian cake appetizer with the quinoa. It was eh okay, I suppose when you're used to eating a chili cheeseburger, quinoa just cannot compare.

Nice mix of bar and family restaurant. Good burgers, nice sweet potato fries, decent beer menu, and draft root beer. Fun place, nice location, no complaints.

This is truly a friendly tavern! They have great hamburgers and if you like surf and turf ... you must try their Hamburger and Smelt combination!!!! In Empire ... it's the place!

  • Mary Jo T.

Good atmosphere, friendly waitress. Food was ok but overpriced. Good beer selection. Good sweet potato fries. We stopped in after a day at the dunes. We didn't have a meal or burgers; just drinks and appetizers (tator tots, nachos, sweet potato chips and cherry salsa). Maybe our review would be better if we had the burgers.

    (3)
  • James C.

If you are in the mood for a burger, this is the place to go. We had the sweet potato chips with homemade salsa and they were great. Next was the blue cheese burger which rocked. We get up to Sleeping Bear once a year and always stop here for a meal.

    (4)
  • Stephen S.

Their menu says they are known for their burgers, and I would have to say I would agree. Their burgers are fresh and good. They have that homemade taste which is a nice change from other joints. I just wish I had a better over all experience from the place. I think it mainly was our server that spoiled our experience here, but I would be willing to come back for another meal. I just hope I get a better server this time.

    (3)
  • Sam S.

I love places like this. Not trying to be anything they aren't. This is burger, beers, old fashioned bar food in a joint type atmosphere. The beef is fresh, the fries are good. They're turning out food for an entire place from about 100 sq feet of kitchen. The service is unpretentious and friendly, and if you go with that attitude you're going to enjoy your meal. It's a throw back to simpler times.

I guess I'm not getting the appeal. I tried Joe's twice on various recommendations. Disappointed with meals each time. I've had worse dining experiences, but I've certainly had better. If you're out in the lovely and sunset-friendly Empire and can't wait to eat, then it's a fair meal. Nothing to write a postcard home about.

  • Jay H.

Very mediocre food, much worse than Empire Village Inn, the sister restaurant down the street. The menu boasts about the burgers, citing the NYT and other media accolades. Do not be fooled. Your 1/3 pound burger will be just OK. The meat is tasty, but the kids who are cooking have no idea how to cook a burger MR and not MW. Fried chicken was overcooked and not that flavorful. Sweet potatoes fries were the highlight.

  • Robert C.

Decent burgers. I went with a cheeseburger with grilled onions. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great, either. The patty was slightly mushier than I would've liked. Their grilled onions are cooked almost all the way, after which they melt the cheese on top; I'm normally a fan of slightly rawer grilled onions, but I suppose that's just personal preference. And the bun was of the mediocre pillowy type that gets smushed down to nothing when you try to pick it up. I also ordered a root beer, which they heavily advertise as being on tap. But, in the end, $2.75 for a soft drink is a little excessive. Having already been charged extra for the grilled onions and cheese on my burger, I suffered from a bit of sticker shock when I got my bill. Should've read the menu a little more closely.

L-O-V-E-D this place!! We were hiking nearby and looking for a place for lunch. Having never been to the area, I went to Yelp to find some recommendations. Decided to check out Joe's and it was a great decision! The place is dark and "rustic" but don't let appearances fool you!! The waitress said they are known for their burgers and now I know why - YUM!!! And the homemade root beer is some of the best I've ever had!! I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger (actually crispy bacon on a burger and a GREAT patty) with sweet potato fries and the husband ordered the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger with regular fries. The only problem were each platter only came with one burger. Highly recommend this joint!

This is a bar that reminds me of Art's Tavern in Glen Arbor, only it's bigger and the service isn't as solid. The Empire Wings were great. They were meaty with the right amount of sauce, a hint of cherry and a small kick. I like to try meals that are out-of-the-box so I took at shot at the Homemade Vegetarian Cake. Think veggie burger with oats, dried cherries, sweet corn, red onion, red beans, garlic, tomato, etc. The Cake was too thin. It covered the bun but its underwhelming flavors were lost amongst the bread. They should double-up on the patty size. On the night we were there -- a quiet Thursday after 7pm -- we noticed a number of waitresses hanging out near the front half of Joe's. But getting water refills or basic "how's it going" checkups were far and few between. Tip: When a customer orders wings bring extra napkins and some wet-wipes with you. And keep the water flowing. Don't sit near the wall of video games. This area of Joe's can be a playpen if kids are in the place. You won't be blown away, but if you're looking for a meal in Empire -- a place with some personality, a sizable menu, or room for a large group -- Joe's will work.

Draft beer options weak, burgers fresh but lack seasoning, kid's menu pricey (and serve Kraft mac n cheese). After having Art's Tavern in Glen Arbor 2 days before, I was disappointed. Wish would have drove the extra 10 miles. Good, but nowhere a top ten burger. Kudos though to the sweet potato fries (and check out Grocer's Daughter chocolates on M22 just south of M72). Service was fine.

Great place near Sleeping Bear Dunes for a burger and great sweet potato fries. Had a few nice beers on tap and friendly service. Thanks to Yelp for suggesting this place.

Just like you would expect a rural Michigan restaurant to be. Wood walls, drop ceiling, pinball and crane machine, extensive burger options. Sweet potato fries were yummy. Service was pretty good. Drink prices will quickly inflate your bill. Bottled beer $5.50 and the root beer on tap doesn't include free refills.

After a full day at Sleeping Bear, we landed here - all 12 of us. They quickly threw some tables together and did their best to keep up with the chaos that ensues whenever 7 adults and 5 kids are gathered unexpectedly at a restaurant. We ordered tons of smelt - ahh, just like when I used to scoop 'em up by the dozens out of the *crick* by my childhood home-- plenty of burgers and fries on order as well. And chili. And pitchers of root beer. Its a comfortable bar slash restaurant with almost anything you could want on their menu. Michigan fish abound! If I'm ever back in Empire, which is likely, I'll be back at Joe's.

After a day of tubing down the Platt River, we were looking for a place to eat. I called ahead to notify them that we would be arriving with a party of 14. They would not guarantee seating until the entire party arrived. No problem, as we were all driving together. Once we arrived, they quickly cleared out the table and went to work arranging them together :) Most of the table ordered various burgers.. coleslaw and sweet potato fries. Everyone enjoyed their choices. Me? I chose the Black and Blue Burger. It was very good! Now, the food is good, the service is good, but be prepared to pay for it! The prices are steep. My burger/fries was around $10-$11. While everyone enjoyed the food, we all agreed the cost was pricey. But, we enjoyed the meal and would be back if we are in the area again.

This is a great place. We went there a few times, once for dinner and a few times for breakfast while we stayed in Empire for a few days. We really couldn't have asked for any better all-around casual dining. Burgers and fries - really good. Same for breakfasts (pancakes, omelets, eggs over easy, coffee) - all solid. The food was a step above the usual you find in northern Michigan, plus it's filled with locals hanging out and chatting. Nice, and great service -- and only a block from the lake.

I love a good burger and this really is as good as it gets! They grind the meat every morning and cook it up right every time! You also choose your side which includes, steak fries, french fries, or sweet potato fries. YES!

Are you kidding me? No reviews yet? What kind of a world do we live in? Dang. This place is the real deal - go here now. Get a burger. Drink some beer. Throw some money in the jukebox. Enjoy the fantastic service. Be very, very happy that you found it and come again. Ultimate Northern Michigan tavern/restaurant. Period.

We love eating at the Friendly Tavern when we're in the Dunes area. We've eaten our way through much of the menu -- lots of appetizer, burger, sandwich and entree choices -- and especially appreciate the dishes utilizing local foods. Some of our favorites include whitefish fingers -- deep-fried, dippable strips of whitefish -- hot wings featuring local cherry hot sauce and sweet potato nachos topped with local cherry salsa. The restaurant has a laid-back feel that makes it a favorite with locals and tourists alike, and it's also family-friendly. And -- they brew their own root beer. Whether you're kayaking, dune-climbing or art-crawling around this scenic part of the state, the Friendly Tavern is a great place to stop for a beer and/or a bite to eat.

Not only great burgers, but good dinner entres as well. An unassuming, no stuffy airs place for a good meal - but I kinda miss the old shuffleboard game that used to be in the back room back in the '70's.

We're going to find somewhere else to eat for the rest of our labor day weekend.

well worth the short drive from glen arbor, excellent food worthy of the hype. especially since every (and i mean every) restaurant in glen arbor is a study in mediocrity and tourist gouging prices. this really is the hidden (to some) gem that needs to be explored, instead of patronizing the awful restaurants of downtown glen arbor that are quick to take your money but not deliver in the taste or service department. will come back here every time we're in town or passing through.

  • Brad S.

The kids like the nachos. I end up here a couple of times a year and every time it's pretty much the same. If it's busy at all, the service is slow. The food is good if your really hungry and in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

Great food, but way overpriced so only 3 stars. Sorry but a $17 burger for lunch is ridiculous. Great burgers, lots of great choices. Smelt appetizer was excellent, highly recommended. Kids loved draft root beer, and I loved the beer selections.

Great food....our entire party had burgers & they were delicious!!! My gauge for a good restaurant is the quality of their soup & the bean soup here was terrific! If you are looking for the quintessential Atmosphere of a great "upnorth" bar..thus is it. Enjoy!!!

I had the fish sandwich and Tequila Sunrise and both were really good. I just wish they had other options for sides. Customer service was fabulous. I would certainly come back if I am in the area.

Great food, but way overpriced so only 3 stars. Sorry but a $17 burger for lunch is ridiculous. Great burgers, lots of great choices. Smelt appetizer was excellent, highly recommended. Kids loved draft root beer, and I loved the beer selections.

Great spot!! We only found this joint this year after coming up many times. Great burgers. Definitely opt for the pretzel bun. Sweet potato fries and tater tots also great. Will definitely return

Just like you would expect a rural Michigan restaurant to be. Wood walls, drop ceiling, pinball and crane machine, extensive burger options. Sweet potato fries were yummy. We're going to find somewhere else to eat for the rest of our labor day weekend.

well worth the short drive from glen arbor, excellent food worthy of the hype. especially since every (and i mean every) restaurant in glen arbor is a study in mediocrity and tourist gouging prices. this really is the hidden (to some) gem that needs to be explored, instead of patronizing the awful restaurants of downtown glen arbor that are quick to take your money but not deliver in the taste or service department. will come back here every time we're in town or passing through.

The kids like the nachos. I end up here a couple of times a year and every time it's pretty much the same. If it's busy at all, the service is slow. The food is good if your really hungry and in the area but I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here.

If you are in the mood for a burger, this is the place to go. We had the sweet potato chips with homemade salsa and they were great. Next was the blue cheese burger which rocked. We get up to Sleeping Bear once a year and always stop here for a meal.

Not only great burgers, but good dinner entres as well. An unassuming, no stuffy airs place for a good meal - but I kinda miss the old shuffleboard game that used to be in the back room back in the '70's.

Period.

Friendly's has a good atmosphere, as in they are not Friendly in name only. Enough with the puns, food was mighty tasty. Piping hot, fresh, and very good fortification before an awesome kayak/float down the Lower Platte.
