My nights favorite place for coneys...snappy dogs not the cheap tasting coneys. Used to eat here all of the time. Great breakfasts too.

Eh, cheap dogs if you're in the area and craving. Otherwise, you can do better.

This is what the Detroit coney is all about. While Lafayette and American get all the press, Joe's delivers the goods. Try the chili chips, too. Homemade potato chips drenched in meaty chili goodness. My favorite coney island and one of the very best you can find anywhere.

I'm not sure I'm the best judge of what makes a good coney dog. I grew up in Brooklyn, for several years living about a mile from Coney Island. To me, a Coney Island hot dog means a _Nathan's_ hot dog with mustard, sauerkraut, and nothing else. Others might add a little relish, but little more, with the dog itself being a major player in the concoction. So when I found myself in Dearborn, surrounded by dozens of restaurants proclaiming a Coney Island heritage, I knew I had to see what this was all about. I prevailed upon my hosts to bring me face to bun with a coney, and so last Saturday, we hit the road and ended up at Joe's Top Dog. I ordered the Jim Padilla special -- which is a hot dog topped with ground beef, chili, mustard, and onion -- for the full experience, and when it arrived, I stared at it and thought, "How the heck am I supposed to eat this thing?" I also thought, "Is there really a hot dog under all those toppings?" So I dug in -- and when I say I dug in, I mean I really had to dig, because there was no way I could have lifted this monster to my mouth without it collapsing into my lap. It definitely had to be eaten with a knife and fork. What did I think of it? Let's just say I was anthropologically satisfied, but not gustatorially satisfied. I was glad to have gotten to Joe's so I could say I'd had a coney, but in terms of the flavor, it was all a big shrug to me. I've had more delicious hot dogs, heartier chili, more flavorful ground beef, and buns with more intestinal fortitude. So none of the individual components blew me away. And the hot dog itself was barely even a supporting player, lost under all of the other ingredients! But -- maybe that's not the point of a coney dog. The people I was with didn't seem at all disappointed, so perhaps the Platonic ideal of what a coney dog is supposed to be was fulfilled. As for me, though, it's something that having done, I felt no need to do again. I'm willing to admit this just might not be for me, so I have no problem with you taking everything I've written here with a grain of salt. However, the fries and onion rings were good, the servers were friendly ... and I'm probably way out of line. But what do you expect out of a kid from Brooklyn raised down the street from Coney Island?

Best breakfast in town, these guy's know how to cook eggs without burning them. For $3.50 you won't beat it.

I don't think I've given a diner / coney island 4+ stars before, but this place is dynamite. It is a "Frankenstein" restaurant made by knocking out the walls between two very different places, but it works even if it's not super elegant. They have great specials, the service is fun and prompt, and the food is delicious. My favorites are the JoBo's Buffalo Chicken Sandwich (real chicken breast with a nice crispy outside and served on a delicious bun) and the chili cheese chips (fried homemade potato chips covered in nacho cheese and chili). I've heard the breakfast food is great too, although I've never tried it. They have a full bar, although I've mostly only gone at lunchtime so I don't get to enjoy it. The parking lot is huge and is behind the building. Definitely stop in here for a bite to eat and make some friends.

One of the better Coney Islands I have been to. The coney sauce is Detroit Style, no beans. Chili (Coney) Cheese fries use the coney sauce and nacho cheese, instead of bean chili or shredded cheese. The Coney Cheese fries are very good, some of the best I have ever had. Add a little ketchup and its go time. Like most Coney Islands, Top Dog serves breakfast all day long and has a variety of omelets on the menu. The hash-browns are of the shredded variety, which for my money, are the only real kind of hash-browns to be had. Other delicious menu items include their fried Chicken Sandwich and their Fish Sandwich. Along with the Coney Island restaurant, Top Dog also has a traditional bar section attached. Beer and liquor available. Another great feature is the free Wi-Fi available! The city of Dearborn has a program that offers free Wi-Fi access at various businesses in town, in order to attract more long term customers. I have spent a good while at the Top Dog bar with some Coney Cheese Fries, enjoying the Wi-Fi when I was living in my Dearborn studio apartment. One con about the Top Dog Coney Island is its hours. It doesn't stay open past 8 P.M. on weekdays, until 6 P.M. on Saturdays and closed on Sundays! Its certainly a late breakfast - lunch place, which works for the usual business people on Michigan Ave but for night owls (me) or those who work on the weekend (also me) Top Dog is not usually open when I'm feinin for some coney cheese fries. This also goes against the usual 24 hour Coney Island formula, which knocks it down a couple of points. Overall, Top Dog Coney Island is on my list of great Michigan coney Islands and the best Coney Island in Dearborn.

Not sure if they have updated the main restaurant since they opened in '82, but this is the only place in town that you can get a 'Jim Padilla Special'. This place seems to be full of regulars that are trying to keep this their own little secret. Joe is still working at the grill hollering at the customers he obviously knows by name. $1 coneys on Wednesdays pack the area around the doors and booths with customers wearing suits and coveralls alike, while Zoya hollers for the cooks to work faster. Menu is typical coney with decent prices. Good food, good service. I'll be back for sure, but I don't feel like I need to go out of my way to get here.

I use to eat here once a month and enjoyed the coney dogs the best! But last week I went to pick a dozen coney dogs and 2 loose burgers when I got back to work me a 3 others started eating a when I opened the styroform box my first coney was in there was a cockroach crushed in the fold of the box. There is no way the cook who put the coneys in there would not have seen that it was disgusting and no sooner I found it in mine my coworker Found what appeared to be a roach leg in his loose burger box....at that point no one ate any of our food.........I then called top dog and the lady who answered the phone tried to make it seem as if the roaches came from us not them. I tried to tell her that I never heard of a roach crawling into a sealed hotdog box and crush itself between the folds of the styroform but she insisted that it wasn't from them......at that point I realized that this conversation was going nowhere ( Stubbron,Hardheaded) so I hung up and decided to write this review. I WILL NEVER EAT THERE AGAIN AND DONT RECOMMEND IT ANYMORE.......UNLESS YOUR INTO THE BUG THING..........

The Top Dog is TOP NOTCH in my book. We stumbled upon it on friday evening. Lucky for me as I like my fish and chips, which was on special. The cod was lightly breaded and meaty. Fries served with was slightly seasoned and very tasty. The salad was passable. My s.o. is a dawg man and was impressed with the coney's he ordered. He described them as being more chili dog style than coney dog style. I say, whatever. This is two side by side businesses in one with a walk through that has been constructed between the two. The coney side closes up early, but the bar side remains open and continues cooking and serving food. Happy hour is 6pm to 8pm and consists of $1 drafts. Three or more flatscreens adore the walls along with sports memorabelia. Club Keno is available. There is a R & B house band that plays at 9pm on wednesdays. They also have open mic time. Staff is friendly, attentive and openly honest. As I was paying the food/bar tab, Michelle told me that my s.o. had already tipped her so we were set. He was actually tipping for her help with Keno. I tipped her for the excellent service she provided us. Parking is street side and in the back of the building. Check it out!

A restaurant should not have coney island in it's name unless it's main fare is a coney. Joe stacks them up his arms and there is a grill full of them going all the time. Wednesday is coney day. Great fries and on Fridays beer battered fish, all good. Retired now but gotta stop in and eat some comfort food.

Coney-style food for great prices! And great beer specials as well. I went here for lunch and was pleasantly suprised as I expected another sub-par coney joint. The vibe of the place was the typical aging diner full of regulars stopping by for a cheap lunch. The waitstaff was friendly and accomodating. I ordered the Vivi Pita wrap (chicken, cheese, peppers, and onions) and a side of fries, all for around $6. The dish arrived with a pile of tasty fries. The pita bread, chicken, and veggies were good but I didn't like that they put nacho cheese in the wrap instead of cheddar. But I was hungry and ate the whole thing! One reason I gave Joe's a lower rating was for the smaller size of the sandwich compared to other coney islands like National. My pita wrap could have been filled a lot more, but I guess with the cheap prices who am i to complain? The others in my party ordered chicken fingers and a burger w/ chili fries and they both said they were good! While the menu isn't particularly exciting, the quality for price ratio is pretty high. I wouldn't take a special trip to go to Joe's but if you are in the area, drop by for some decent diner food.
