Been coming here for over 30 years and it's the closest to Tonys pasties in Laurium in copper country.

Cool little shack with just a tiny space to step in and order a pasty. These are like the offspring of a calzone and a pot pie or conversely, the granddaddy of a hot pocket, lol They're about a pound each so if you're just wanting to grab one for a meal you probably only are gonna wanna eat one. They come with gravy for an extra seventy cents and really are essential as they can be a touch dry otherwise I got a chicken and a beef hot (5.82 each but there's a coupon that saves you forty cents a pasty If you look around in the Detroit paper for it) and got one of each frozen for another time They tasted great. I'd return. Notes to add: contrary to prior reviews they DO take credit cards now. There's a vegetable pasty for you non meat eaters which is a dollar less

Love this place! They have THE best pizza and are incredibly friendly and accommodating. One of my kids hates sauce and they were happy to put no sauce on 2 pieces! Nothing beats a mom and pop shop :)

I think it is positively ridiculous that I have to drive 40 miles for a good pasty, but that is exactly what I do. I have checked every single pasty place in southeastern Michigan, but these are the absolute BEST. I was sick when they closed the Livonia location, but if it means driving to Clawson to satisfy my craving that's exactly what I'll do. best Best BEST pasties of all!!!

Ever wonder what its like to work in a UP mine? Me either, but these copper country pasties are the best. They are like a potpie sandwich, but I suggest getting a sjde of gravy and using a fork. Great pizza too.

Oh man! Buy them frozen, cold, or hot. It doesn't really matter as they taste just as delicious today as they did 35 years ago when we bought them from Barb's house. These warm treats fill the belly and warm you up on a cold day. Yoopers would be jealous to know that there is someone down here that can slap together a pasty this good. The service is always excellent and the cookies ain't bad either.

Totally delightful and delicious. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will return very soon.

I stopped in last week for a pastie. I have not been able to find one as good as Copper Country but this was pretty darn close. The pastie was hot, filling and the crust was awesome. I will definitely go back and probably pick up some frozen beef pasties for a fall weekend up north. Have to give the pizza a shot sometime.

I got to try the coleslaw (I am a connoisseur). Wow. This was the best traditional coleslaw I've had in Michigan, possibly anywhere. It had perfect balance between cabbage and sauce, bite and sweetness. The pastie, too, was wonderful. Thank goodness I'm close enough to Clawson to get there more often, which I will. Even potholes will not keep me away!

Take out only. Great Pizza, and the best price for what you get, compared to anywhere. Downside:They only take cash. Upside: Everything else. The pizza ingredients are fresh and the put a lot on. I am a man who likes a carnivorous pizza. Pepperoni, ham, and bacon. They put a lot of toppings on, and the crust is simple but amazing. My wife and I have Barb's pizza cravings about once a month. Never had a bad experience. Their salads and good, and their deserts are incredible. Zucchini Bread or Carnot Cake... Awesome... The dont spend a lot on the buildings or menus, and it feels like your'e walking into your grandma's house through the storm-door... Just simple take out all day, everyday.

The pizza here is nothing to write home about. The pasties are pretty good, not the greatest but they are homemade and comforting. The filling is plentiful and you can make out what is in the inside. The crist on the outside could be a little thicker for my liking. There isn't a lot of meat, but in a pinch on a fall night when you don't feel like cooking it'll work well.

Barb's Pasties & Pizza is my go to comfort food. Last Thursday night my ex-girlfriend and I got into a fight. I realized our relationship was over at that point. I didn't know what to do with myself and was thinking dark thoughts. Friday morning I went into Barb's and got three pasties. One chicken, one beef and one vegetarian. I ate a pasty for breakfast, lunch and dinner and gradually began to feel better. By Saturday I was ready to get back on the horse and never looked back. Make sure to always get gravy with your pasty and bring cash.

Pasties are the real, Copper Country, deal. We're talking Kaleva Cafe south. Cookies are good also. And here's the big news at Barb's - credit cards now accepted, eh?

(3.5 Stars) I've been on the 'pie' hunt and a yelper suggested trying a patsie. So after being in the area running errands decided to grab two on the way home. They both were packaged hot & surprisingly stayed flakey after warming them up @ 325 in the oven. To be honest the chicken patsie with gravy was a drier chicken pot pie. I preferred the beef patsie of the two a lil red rooster helped up the flavour. It was a nice lil take home 2 for $12 with gravy (which I highly reccomend)...

Barb's has really good pasties and they're really big. They claim a full pound but all I know is they were heavy. I ordered one beef and one chicken each with their own type of gravy which was also delicious. The pasties were loaded with veggies and the meat seemed roasted, shredded and really tender. The crust was also tender and somewhat flaky and lightly baked. I really enjoyed them both. I would also love to try their pizza the next time I'm in the neighborhood. Definitely worth trying!

3.5 Stars This is regarding the pasties only. I have not come across a pasty from any establishment that compared to my late Grandmothers and for that matter pasties that I have made (from her recipe) in the past. Well, my Aunt loves this place and she's a great cook so I take her advice so I picked some up. First impression good, taste is pretty good, I've had 3 beef but the last one kind of turned me off because the meat inside tasted near the end a little bit like canned corned beef hash but overall this is a good place if you don't want to spend the time cooking these from scratch. The only thing that will make a bigger mess in the kitchen are Pierogis. Tip: Ketchup to a pastie is like sour cream to a taco. I personally would have rated this place a solid 3 Stars but my mom (who was visiting from out of town) liked them very much so: Me: 3 Stars Mom: 4 Stars Total: 3.5 Stars

I realize its called Barb's Pasties, and I've had my fair share of them over the years, but to be honest the pizza is what keeps me coming back. Very reasonable price and its cooked properly with a bit char. I think they can complete with almost anyone..BUT The reason I come here often is for the homemade carrot cake. It is just ridiculously good and I will sometimes drive several miles for a $1.89 slice of this stuff.

I love this little hole-in-the-wall take-out place! Authentic Michigan comfort food at its best. As noted by other reviewers, these pasties are the real deal...both in terms of authenticity and price. We're so lucky to be just down the road a bit from here, so it's one of my favorite go-to places when I just don't want to cook...or like this weekend, when I need a little comfort food. The antipasto salads are decent, and I always have to restrain myself from taking one of their great little carrot cakes home. I love carrot cake, and this is a moist, nutty, carroty delight. Buy your pasties hot out of the oven, or, if you don't plan to eat them right away, you have the option of purchasing them already cooked and frozen so you can just pop them into your freezer for later! Again...buying local at its best :)

For a pastie, this is the place. My dad grew up in the iron ore range, and these pasties are as good as anywhere in the UP or northern states! Their carrot cake is awesome also. Salads are just basic, and Pizza is OK. However, I stick to salad, Pastie, and carrot cake and it makes a great easy dinner for a reasonable price. We eat Vege quite often, so make sure you call ahead so they can have them heated up for you!

Good pasties are hard to find. I've had them all over the U.P. Barb's are the best in the state. We actually buy a bunch and bring them to the U.P. with us for hunting season with the guys. Big and hearty. We'll be back again and again for sure.

  • Rob M.

Great beef pasties that are about 50% bigger than others (and much better) that I've had in the metro area at about the same price. This is the closest pastie in quality to some I've eaten in the U.P. I have not tried any other food here, so I can't comment about the pizza, etc.. HIghly recommended!!

The rating above may have been higher if I had tried Barb's during the fall/winter season. When the weather gets cooler, I gravitate towards heavier, heartier meals. Those kind of meals seem to be much more satisfying in that case, as I'm sure many will agree. To make this short and sweet, I thought the food here was exactly what my rating indicates: A-OK. I tried the beef pastie with gravy, chicken pastie with gravy, carrot cake and coleslaw. I found the chicken to be the superior pastie. Hearty, filling, good flavor, encased in a light, flaky crust, but truth be told, I didn't think it was anything to Yelp home about. I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw. I prefer coleslaw to be a tad sweeter and a bit more acidic. As for the carrot cake, the cake part was pretty standard, while the frosting was lacking in the texture and taste department. It was somewhat gritty, and I longed for a more prominent cream cheese flavor. When the temperature drops I may try Barb's again, but until then, 3-stars it is.

Pasties were dry and hard. Pizza was very saucy. Average.

Being a real dyed in the wool Yooper from Iron County dees dem dar pasties are ok in a pinch da are da Finlander variety and not the Cornish kind. Da wife and I were here last weekend and tried a couple. Gravy is sinful on dees plump pasties. We prefer dem au- naturel eh? Not alot of room at displace. No seating but good fer takeout

I've probably passed this place 1000 times, but never thought to try it. I saw an ad in the J & B magazine and I was in Clawson, so I thought I"d give it a try. I am glad I did. This place is no bigger than my garage, but they do know how to make pasties. I got the chicken with gravy and they did not disappoint. They are 1 lb pasties, so they are a meal indeed! The good thing is you can take a couple home to freeze or even take them home cold. They are pretty inexpensive--about $5 and some cents if you get asmall gravy. I love how they are loaded with veggies and make a hearty meal on a chilly evening. They also had an array of sides like cole slaw and salads and the pizza looked good as well. I got a few to send up to college with my son. I'm sure he'll be the envy of his roommates! YUM!

5 star pasties, two star pizza. The mark of a great pastie is that it doesn't need gravy. These certainly stand on their own. The veggies are sliced thin and are perfectly cooked inside the dough. Delicious!

  • Jeff A.

This pastie is as good as it gets!!! I have eaten them all across copper country, and I have had many attempts from here to there and everywhere in between... This is where it is at in the world of beef pasties!!! I know they make more then beef, Ill be honest in the 20 plus years I have been eating these, I just have not found the time for a chicken or veggie pastie... Meaty flavorful perfect, OMG from the perfect crust to the perfect veggie meat amalgam inside it just delights the tongue and all of the senses are touched!!! Add an antipasto salad and a piece of carrot cake and you might just die truly happy!!! Try it you will like it! only downer no credit cards, at these prices who needs a credit card? You go Barb's!

I had one veggie pastie and one beef pastie today. The beef pastie was hot, even after I drove home. Man, that was good. A little heavy, but what did I expect with dough and beef? The veggie pastie came cold and I'm saving it for my gf.

a recent trip to black lotus brewery reminded me that barb's was waiting for me. the pasties here are all i could review. i've never had the idea to try their pizza, the pasties are that good. they come in beef, chicken, and veggie. you can also get them hot or partially cooked and finish them in your oven. i usually go with the classic beef pastie with gravy. i have to say i leave with a warm one and take at least 1 home to cook later. the pasties are priced at around 5 bucks and are a filler. if you haven't tried a pastie before barb's, it's as good as the UP. they have really good cole slaw too. i always get a side to go with my pastie love, juston

Solid solid pasties. Comparable to those in the U.P. No frills, in-and-out takeout place. Beef was ridiculously good, the chicken was good. The coleslaw was really flavorful and a good mix of cream and crunch. Everything else in the case looked tempting, especially the carrot cake. I will surely be back again. Only bummer is that they don't take plastic, however I found it really endearing that they take personal checks!

I'm not really sure what I was expecting from Barb's, but after reading the reviews on here, I thought "okay, kind of like a chicken pot pie". You get a decent meal for about $5. I had the chicken pastie, although mine feels more like a potato pastie, I would definitely have liked to see more chicken in here. And well, while it does remind me of a pot pie, nothing beats my moms chicken pot pie. I will be back to try the pizza though, and I did get a slice of carrot cake which I have not yet had, but the piece was huge and oozing with homemade good looking stuff. Okay...10 minutes later and an update on the carrot cake....YUM! This is how carrot cake should be done everywhere.

I only wish there were more stars cuz I'd give this place 100!!! FANFRIGGENTASTIC!!!!! I bought chicken and beef pasties with gravy and they were perfect. Moist and full of flavor and the gravy was perfectly seasoned - not salty. These were the best pasties I've ever eaten (and I've eaten the pasties in Copper Harbor in the U.P.!) Can't wait to try their pizza too!

  • Mike D.

I'm not much of a fan of their pizza, had a few times and thought it was just ordinary... better than Little Caesars but still nothing that I would write in my memoirs. Their pasties are freaking awesome though, thats all I go there for. They have chicken and beef, they even have a veggie one, but I'm sure the dough is made with lard, so the vegetarians are getting some sort of porky goodness in them. The beef is the best one they have, since it has the most flavor compared to the chicken. Nice big prices of meat with potatoes, carrots and rutabaga are in there. I recommend getting the gravy to make it a bit more wet and even kick the flavor up also. Its cheap, filling and really damn good. Dont buy one from the supermarket, those are rubbish.. just take the time and get a fresh one from Barbs instead.

Great place for pasties. I'm half Finnish, so I appreciate great pasties. I like the beef and vegetable kinds the most. You can get gravy for them, which is worth trying. I grew up eating meat pasties with ketchup. I also like the special salad dressing and their salad. Desserts are yummy too. No credit or debit cards accepted.

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I've never had one of the pasties! I'll have to try one soon. Their pizza turnovers are what I go for! They're a little heavy on the sauce for me, but they are always loaded with cheese.

Cut one of those cute little stars in half for a 3.5 rating. So, I can't speak to the famed pasties, but I will say Barb's does a solid pizza. I ordered a cheesy masterpiece topped with mounds of Jalapenos (I don't mess around when it comes to my need for hotness), and Barb's delivered. They earned extra marks for being super cool about my topping, asking me to open the box to be sure I had enough pepper-y coverage on my mozz. Bonus points. Oh, and they do a pretty mean carrot cake. Massive. Pieces.

Great pasties, friendly service, great experience, huge pasties- one filled us up cannot wait to go back. Great desserts too.

Barb's does a great pizza. They have a nicer quality pepperoni than most places, similar to Como's or Green Lantern. I am picky about my pizza and would give 4 stars for the picky pizza eater, but the people at Barb's are so unbelievably friendly that I give them 5. Also, you can see inside the kitchen and it is super clean in there. Barb also gets high marks for keeping the menu simple. Pizza, Pasties, carrot cake, couple of other things. I wish more places were like this.

  • Nick S.

I haven't tried the pasties, but I did try the pizza. And I'm so glad I did. I just moved up to Michigan from Missouri, and I drive by Barb's everyday. I thought I got to try this little hole-in-the-wall pizza place because honestly, those are usually the best. I ordered a pepperoni pizza. After the first bite, I was sold. It's covered in cheese and freshly cut pepperoni. The sauce compliments the cheese perfectly and leaves the palette perfectly satisfied and wanting more. It could be the hearty toppings or the sultry way the cheese flows beyond the crust every time you pick up a piece, but whatever it is, it will definitely make Barb's my pizza of choice.

Aweome pizza and pasties!! Call ahead if you want to pasties heated, otherwise you do them in your oven when you get home (still just as good).

  • Greg S.

This my benchmark of pasties. I have yet to find anywhere that serves them better. I order them by the dozen and keep 'em in the freezer. Their carrot cake is also quite delicious and also freezes well.
