One advantage of a stand alone, independent place is the lengths they will go to make your sandwich just as you want it! I liked the Nick's Nosh sandwich with coleslaw and cucumber and more. I wanted it warm - grilled - but didn't want limp cukes. They did it perfect and it was very good. I ate the whole thing! (Really should have taken half with me and not be so stuffed.) have to go back to try more of the veggie sandwiches. And the decor is ecletic, not corporate themed. Ah that's nice...if I weren't so full I would have gone to Zou Zou's for a latte.

I agree with others, since they have changed management/owners, it just isn't the same. I hadn't been in for quite awhile, but came in for lunch. I ended up getting a half sandwich and cup of soup. The soup (broccoli cheese) was really good. The sandwich wasn't very good. The pickle was bad... The service was ok. Nothing great. The sandwich, soup, and a soda was $9.27, which was a pretty good deal. Their new hours SUCK. Only open until 5 during the week? Guess I won't be getting dinner from there....

Stopped in for a quick lunch. Had planned on going to Common Grill before I realized it would be $15 for a sandwich. Been spending too much on eating out recently, so I came here instead to pay about half the price. Ordered the Dutch Treat per Colleen Z's rec, and man, is it tasty. It's roast beef, gouda cheese, honeycup mustard. I ate it about an hour later so it was cold, but it was still delicious. Microwaved the second half and it was even better. I can't imagine what it would've been like fresh off the grill. The honeycup mustard makes it really outstanding. For a sandwich, it's a little expensive at $8.69. Would come back often for lunch.

Things have changed as the business has changed hands but still the best place in Chelsea for a soup and sandwich. Menu shrank a great deal which has left many regulars lost.

While the owners (and portions) have changed over the years, the delicious deli creations have remained relatively untouched. Just off I-94, Mike's Deli is a true culinary gem that is worth stopping for! There is a sandwich (or soup) for EVERYONE! I cannot get enough of the Bonnie's Blessing and Rubenesque sandwiches. Their grilled Challah (bread) is AMAZING. On a recent trip to the area, I ate at Mike's Deli 8 times in 10 days. YES, it is THAT good. Not to mention I live 3,000 miles away and must get my fill when I have the chance. Great town, great deli, great sandwich. I will be devastated if this place ever goes out of business, so PLEASE, please, please go eat there! :)

I cannot even believe that I am writing this review. To be honest, I am completely disappointed and a little in awe that my family's favorite "treat" for dinner here in Chelsea is no longer. The moment we walked into the store tonight, we felt something was different. There was no warm greeting. Kevin always at the register, smiling, knowing exactly what my daughter would want to order. The man at the register was polite, but not outgoing and friendly. We placed our order, sat down, and began the discussion that the entire atmosphere inside the store was a bit different. The time between placing the order and the food appearing on the table was abnormally long--about 20 minutes. The menu looked the same. But when the food was set down at the table, my husband immediately said "something does not look right". The portions are smaller, the bread is cut into thinner slices. I fear that some of the ingredients have been swapped out for lesser ones. All of our sandwiches were undercooked - cheese not melted, meat cold. Just like another reviewer said "Only time will tell" if the new management will take this sandwich shop to greatness or will it become another disappointing location to get a meal in Chelsea.

It's been two months since I learned that Kevin sold Mike's Deli to new owners, and my first visit since hearing the news. I read the latest reviews with great trepidation, and was looking forward to learn what changed, how, and how much. The verdict is best quickly offered with the following chocolatey metaphor: It is as if Hershey bought Godiva. Few complain that Hershey chocolate stinks. It's entry-grade stuff, the least of the chocolate you'd want to put in your body, and tasty enough. Most of us extol the decadent deliciousness of Godiva chocolates. And so that's the economic landscape of chocolate. But what if Godiva retired and sold out to Hershey? Certainly, the new owners would be ill advised to make any drastic changes to jeopardize their new property. No, any changes would be subtle and gradual - and most assuredly, cheapening. Beyond the metaphor is the food. Here goes: The #37 Reuben was different. The sauce tasted different somehow. The corned beef was sliced thinker than before. The swiss had a different, less smooth flavor to it. The bread is TOTALLY different. Recall my initial review lauding the presence of Zingermans bread in the sandwiches? I saw not a single Big Z wrapper behind the glass last night. The thinner slices of bread deformed to the sandwich unlike before. The #38 Stingray seemed closer to what I remember, certainly, save the seemingly cheaper, thinner sourdough. I'm sure the sandwich's having been grilled detracted from the switch-out of brand of bread. My son proclaimed that the kids' hot dogs were as good as ever. Yay. I found myself second-guessing with every minute visited, with every bite, whether something had truly changed about my experience, or if I was just perceiving a faux difference. Indeed, I asked myself time and again: Had I walked into a Godiva chocolatier and was unwittingly offered a sample of what turned out to be Hershey's chocolate, would I have noticed? Would anyone notice? Would you? That difference - perceived or real - underscores the chasm between excellence and mediocrity, between 3 and 5 stars. I hope the new owners understand that, be it fair or not, perception is everything.

I hate to do it but I am going to be the one to deflate the balloon. The corned beef here was definitely nothing to brag on. At all. The bread from Zing's rocks, grilled especially, but the meat? Meh. I sampled a Mike's Favorite with corned beef, swiss, coleslaw and Russian grilled on rye. The bland tasting meat was not really the star here (so strange with corned beef really), the very nice cheese and bread taste dominated the experience. It was good but really other than the bread nothing that special. The price was nice but I'd rather pay more for better. I will be frank, I am not much of a cook. I can go to Zing's though and buy bread, then pick up some Boar's Head meats and make the same sandwich at home. To me this is a sad statement indeed. I am probably spoiled and clearly I did order wrong but what I did get was underwhelming. I can only judge a place on what I do eat. I debated between a three and a four because they are super friendly in here, I ordered wrong, the sandwich was still good-ish and it was a decent pickle but the potato salad side was really not good at all to my palate. This made the place only a three overall. I would go back, try other things (clearly) but I was not a fan and found it just ok. I would not trek to Chelsea specifically for it. The super glowing reviews did not help. I was expecting way more and this is simply a sandwich place, not a real deli.

I swear lightening might strike me but Mike's Deli is better than Zingermans. Don't get me wrong, I love Zingermans but for the ease, taste and price you can not go wrong at Mike's. My favorite sandwich is the Dutch Treat, roast beef, gouda and honey mustard on grilled challah. Be still my heart. I also love the Tuna but the Dutch Treat is my favorite right now. Mike's is a winner across the board. Yum.

Mike's Deli is under newer ownership. The ad says that their menu creations remain relatively untouched. Not so. I used to frequent this place and a lot of my favorites taste like they're missing the flavors they used to have. The place is still okay, but not nearly as good as it used to be. I called to place an order recently and I tried to order the strawberry fields salad which is on the menu for a side dish. They said we don't have the strawberry fields salad right now. I said okay, I'll just take a garden salad with blue cheese dressing. They said we don't have blue cheese dressing (yet it was on the menu). If you don't have something, don't put it on the menu. If it's seasonal then indicate that on the menu. Very frustrating. I used to love this place and it was the first place I thought of when going out to eat. Now, if someone wants to go to Mike's, I'll go but it's not my first choice anymore.

For a great sandwich, you can't beat Mike's. As good as it was when Mike owned the place, the new owners have elevated it to an elite among sandwich shops. Just had a Mike's reuben and it done to perfection. Sort of melted in my mouth. You can't get a bad sandwich there.

Called in my order for a Stingray for lunch. Over the phone, the woman I spoke with was cold, and almost sounded like I was annoying her by calling in my order. I arrived and they had my sandwich ready. I was asked if I wanted anything to go with my sandwich and let the woman know which chips I wanted, then went to grab a water out of the cooler. I don't know if the woman taking my money was the same one I spoke with on the phone, but she had the same coldness, and uninterested attitude. I took my meal home where I discovered that I never got my chips, even though I had been charged for them. I assumed that she had put them in the bag while I was grabbing my water. The chips are behind the counter, so there's no way I could have grabbed them myself. I'm not sure what she was thinking. I picked up the first half of my sandwich and noticed that it was a bit thinner than usual, but didn't really think too much of it. It tasted fine. I then noticed that the second half of my sandwich had about twice the amount of meat as the first half. I'm not sure how this happens, but it wasn't what I was looking for, or expected. Too bad this place is going downhill so quickly. Hopefully they turn things around soon.

FOLLOW UP REVIEW: 1/29/13 Nervously I went back to Mike's deli to assess the damage. Pleasantly surprised to see some updating of the facility. More seating available inside. Nice aesthetic changes.... The staff has changed, not entirely, but the new staff is settling in and bringing a happier demeanor to the register. After speaking with one of the owners regarding my previous visit and the difference in the food/preparedness he informed me that they are still learning the nuances of the devoted masses.... after I expressed to him the main differences I noticed in my sandwich he offered to correct the previous problem by making some changes to the preparation of the sandwich and cooking of the sandwich. I was very pleased at the outcome. Just like coming home I was sad to learn that they don't read or have any interest in the YELP reviews. I hope, for their success, they swallow their pride and read the reviews for both the good and the bad.

Best deli sandwich ever! I love it when things are done right, and the folks at Mike's do everything right. My sandwich always arrives with perfectly aligned slices of meat and cheese, and if you want take out, it's packaged impressively to withstand travel. I've tried different things on the menu, and have a hard time identifying a favorite. I do love Mike's Favorite, and the Stingray Club. I enjoy a good sandwich, and have gone hunting for them. Zingerman's is good, but their grilled bread is way too hard. Mike's uses Zingerman's bread, but grills it perfectly. They use simple ingredients to make a perfect, humble sandwich, and the cost is more than fair for what you get. The owner knows my name, and is always so pleasant. The girls behind the counter are sweethearts. You couldn't pay me to say something bad about this deli, I absolutely love it.

I've been back here many times since my first review, including yesterday when it was the lunch stop on a 30 mile bike ride. Kris and I come in quite a bit - always after a hike with the dogs. The sandwiches are consistently good, the service is awesome and you just can't beat local. I've branched out and tried a bunch of different sandwiches; haven't found one I don't like. I also love the fact that they have really naughty greasy sandwiches AND healthy lighter ones. I went with the #19 yesterday (Mike's Double V) without cucumbers - perfect thing to have mid-ride.

I don't even live in MI anymore, but when I visit Detroit or Ann Arbor, I am more than willing to drive to Chelsea just to come here. The best reuben sandwich I've ever had...period. I've tried reubens all over Ann Arbor, Austin, Albuquerque, and other cities and this one really is the most flavorful. Chelsea is a small town that has quite a bit of crap-tourist food and over-priced bougie food...but this place is nice and low key and excellent quality for a reasonable price.

I'm continued to be amazed by everybody using Z's as the standard. They have their everlasting crowd that can recommend what they eat at Z's but come on, $13-16 for a sandwich. Those that have to have bread from a certain place should admit that they like it but would never take home a loaf costing $8-10. Give these new owners a chance and tell them what you like or want to make you lunch worth your visit. Regarding visitors from out of state coming home to visit and wanting everything the way it was as you remember it, where is Tiger Stadium?

  • David S.

Used to be great, under the original Mike and various owners, up to Kevin. Now is average at best, and not worth the price. It's too bad; I used to love Mike's. They should change the name if they're not going to keep any of the recipes/ingredients.

Wow! Am I glad I read the reviews of Mike's Deli before I went to lunch there today. Thank you! I passed on going to the popular Common Grill to try The Stingray at Mike's. What an awesome sandwich! I've had turkey sandwichs before, but this one is done to perfection! The grilled sourdough is fantastic. I can't wait to go back to Mike's! UPDATE: I went back to Mike's the very next day and tried Larry's Wimpy Chicken, a grilled chicken salad sandwich with bacon! (I added lettuce and tomato). This sandwich was amazing too! I don't get to Chelsea much, BUT when I do I will hit Mike's every time!

While in Chelsea for a B&B conference, wanted some real food (not hotel-fare) for lunch. Spotted an ad for Mike's Deli in the Chamber of Commerce book claiming that they use Zingerman's bread. Thought, let's check this place out! So glad we did. Awesome sandwiches, amazing and imaginative choices, super service! Love it!!!!

If you are in Chelsea or anywhere near by, you HAVE to come to Mike's. This is the finest deli I have ever been to and I have been to many a New York Deli. So many choices of sandwiches on the chalk board and every one I try I love. Though my favorite is the "Horsin around #67" and the "Mignano's Meandering #68" with a large order of their unrivaled Tomato Bisque. Huh, I just realized their sequential significance.. Anyhoo, A man and his wife I assume are Mike and Mrs. Mike are there often, greeting you with a smile and appreciation for your business. No joke, I called in an order once and Mike I assume knew my voice and order. And it wasnt like I go in there every day. I was impressed. Well, like Chelsea itself, Mikes Deli will please your belly and your being.

I had the chicken salad with blue cheese. OH YUM! What totally made this sandwich was the way they grilled it. I don't know what kind of witchery those girls were doing behind that counter, but I have never had a better grilled sandwich EVER. The prices were typical Chelsea. For the cost, I wish the sandwiches came with some chips or something, but I did buy a bag on the side. There is really something for everyone there. I love places that have a great variety and deliver on everything they offer. I can't wait to go back!

Almost everything I have ever had there was fantastic. Been going there for a few years now. My only gripe is the hours. I don't even think they are open on Sunday and close at 7pm on weekdays. Not the cheapest deli either.

Right up there with Zingerman's but with better prices! Delish!

It's been a long time since I've eaten at Mike's Deli, but I always thought it was a great little place with excellent sandwiches. I didn't even know the deli was sold until I recently read about it here. But I can honestly say that the sandwich I had today, Mikes Favorite (grilled) was the best sandwich I've had in a long time! I called my order in and it was ready exactly on time, as promised. In my opinion the new owners haven't missed a beat and I know I'll be back again, sooner than later.

Best sandwiches in Chelsea, hands down. Local favorite is the #38, Stingray Club. Monster servings as well, a half will make for a meal for most.

    (5)
  • Dave T.

Sandwiches here are excellent, as are soups. Staff is always friendly. Might not be quite as overstuffed as Zingermans, but on the other hand, they're about 65% of the price.

    (4)
  • Zack S.

Great sandwich shop. They offer the most extensive sandwich list in the area and all from high quality ingredients. No, it's not Zingerman's. These are simply honest to goodness sandwiches. While the options are never ending, Mike's lacks any sense of pretension. The taste to price ratio is really off the charts.

    (4)
  • Cathy B.

Fantastic sandwiches, cute Chelsea location, great prices and generous portions. As others have said, they use Zingerman's bread. And yes, Zingerman's has great bread and great bread makes a great sandwich. Good service, nice people, what's not to love?

Great little hole in the wall in Chelsea. Always a lunch favorite of mine. Not much seating, but I can usually find a place to eat. The menu board is written in chalk, and the sandwich selection is amazing. There is a sandwich for every taste.

Mike's Deli is awesome. This is probably the best deli I've ever been to. Like the first reviewer mentioned, they have a giant chalkboard listing all of their sandwiches. All of the sandwiches I've had have been really good, except the Stingray. That might be the greatest sandwich ever. It's smoked turkey, bacon, aged swiss, and mayo on grilled sourdough. It's fantastic. The only thing that would make this place better is if they served beer, but that's just being picky.

  • Sheel M.

Absolutely wonderful deli. Highly recommended for anyone coming to Chelsea. I'm vegetarian and got the Presto Pesto and had it grilled. It was super delicious, well priced, and the guys had wonderful customer service. In my opinion, this place is way better than Zingerman's at half the price.

    (5)
  • Eric C.

Superb deli fare. Well designed menu. Perhaps not as sublime and esoteric as Zingerman's, every bit as enjoyable. We always do takeout. Not much dine-in ambience. The menu is on his website. I feel like my business is valued. My mouth is watering. Chelsea's best sandwiches by a mile.

The home of the $10+ sandwiches. What can I say, the food isn't bad but in the end it's just an over priced sandwich. Been there a few times. Service is hit or miss. Sometimes the waits are far too long for the amount of customers in there and sometimes they're right on. A little better than Subway but that's not saying much.

This made the place only a three overall. I would go back, try other things (clearly) but I was not a fan and found it just ok. I would not trek to Chelsea specifically for it. The super glowing reviews did not help. I was expecting way more and this is simply a sandwich place, not a real deli.

Stringray + spicy pub mustard. That's all you need to know :)

Sandwiches here are excellent, as are soups. Staff is always friendly. Might not be quite as overstuffed as Zingermans, but on the other hand, they're about 65% of the price.

Fantastic sandwiches, cute Chelsea location, great prices and generous portions. As others have said, they use Zingerman's bread. And yes, Zingerman's has great bread and great bread makes a great sandwich. Good service, nice people, what's not to love?

It was pretty fun to have a guy drawn on the wall as a giant cartoon serve me a great corned beef sandwich. The menu is very extensive and the service is great. High quality food.

Amazing food. High quality ingredients and great staff make this my #1 pick when in Chelsea for business. Great sandwiches with over 100 different choices.
