A cool place in a historic building and well, the possibility of vegan food in such a far-away place doesn't hurt. I had a mushroom burger and my girlfriend had pancakes. Of course there could be some more variety to the vegan stuff but I'm willing to bet there aren't that many passing through. Everyone there was quiet friendly (it was obvious we weren't local) and it turned out we were the only people who had gotten one of the yelp deal things so that was an extra bargain. If I ever find myself in that area again I would certainly go back.

Great spot about 20 minutes away from Munising and definitely worth the short drive to grab a home-cooked delicious meal. Don't let the super tiny strip of a town distract you. It's certainly a hidden gem for tourists who are probably spending most of their time around Pictured Rocks or the larger town of Marquette. The staff is super friendly, ingredients are fresh, and menu seasonal. It's got a nice, warm interior with local art and mix-matched tables and chairs. The food is beyond what you'd expect to find in a cafe. While it's got coffee, brunch, sandwiches, and salads, it's also got a selection of dinner entrees. We had rib eye steaks that came with a salad with homemade maple dressing, roasted broccoli and an option of sweet potato, potato, or rice. Dessert was my favorite part of the meal and plate-licking delicious! We got both desserts: cheesecake with strawberries and both chocolate and caramel sauce (we wanted it all!) and the bread pudding with a whiskey sauce. Our table was split on which was better, but I'm a big bread pudding fan and theirs is superb. It's served warm with a nice toastiness on the top coupled with a moist bottom and a slight bit of custard-like flavor. Whiskey sauce put it over the edge. I also enjoyed it with some fresh strawberries. It's simply divine and a great finish to the meal.

Went there because the hotel told us they were there, for a mom and pop shop it was pretty expensive there was 4 of us total and we spent $109 and the food was not that great, I'm from CA and I thought this place was expensive so what must be worth something...The staff was really nice though.

Tried to go there september25. They even have a yelp purchase. Closed shut. Went across the street and the grocery store employee said he thinks the restaurant is shutting down permanently and not doing well. How could they if they are not open as advertised. And their website is still active. Very poor management. A long drive for nothing. Stay away!

My husband and I drove out of our way to eat here after reading about this farm-to-table restaurant. It's in an unlikely spot in the middle of nowhere but God it's good. Try the whitefish, the perfect grilled cheese. And for dessert don't miss the cheesecake -- the best I've ever had!! Great restaurant!

We just ate here, thanks to Yelp, and loved it. Being a slow season, and midweek to boot, we had the place to ourselves. The service was impeccable! But really, it was good food, convivial conversation and a lovely historic building. I had a BLT with some of the best tomatoes ever. The bacon was delish and it came with soup or salad. I chose the baked potato soup, which was thick, creamy and had bacon "bits" the size of a half-dollar on it. And I got a cherry milkshake. Brilliant. Because it is the slow season, there were a few things not available but I certainly had no regrets. I got too full for dessert but, because of the raves here on Yelp, we ordered it to go. My turtle cheesecake has three souffle cups filled with chocolate sauce, caramel sauce and pecans. Joe got a bacon bleu burger and loved it. Local beef, local pork, local bun. His bread pudding is waiting for him, with a big bowl of whiskey sauce to pour over it. His maple milkshake, made with honest-to-goodness UP maple syrup, was mind-blowing. Chatham is a brief, pretty drive from AuTrain, but even if I was in Munising or Marquette, I'd make the trip to the Rock River Cafe.

Five stars for the excellent drinks, food and friendly service. We also really appreciated that they purchased so many of the ingredients from local farmers/bakers. The hot chocolate is the best you will ever have in your life. The chocolate was NOT the usual powder mix. Instead they make a chocolate sauce fresh on the stove. We also tried the Diner Burger which was excellent. We will definitely return next time we are in the area. This is by far the best out of all the restaurants we have visited in the area.

My mom and I stopped here on our way home from a brief vacation in the Munising area and I wish we had found Rock River Cafe earlier in our visit. The food was delicious and the portions were generous. The staff was quite welcoming, including bringing a table out on the porch so my dog could sit out there with us.

What a delightful surprise this little restaurant was! We were with a party of 5 after a trek to the Ice Caves. We all had different entrees for lunch and there was consensus that everyone said their meal was delicious. Best chili I've ever had and my husband said the potato soup was the best. Someone else said the portabella mushroom sandwhich was fabulous. Service was wonderful - polite and attentive. Our vegan friends were able to have choices that they were pleased with. Interesting spices, food tasted fresh, loved that many of the ingredients were local and organic. Wish the restaurant was closer to Marquette, but it's an easy drive.

I hate giving the Rock River Cafe only two stars, but for the time being that's what they get. Let's start with the good: the food was very tasty and the coffee was great. For breakfast I ordered an entree consisting of potatoes, quinoa, and spinach with lots of roasted garlic. It was good, though I eventually asked for an over-medium egg to put on top, as I thought it needed some sauce to bring it all together. My iced espresso was perfect-- rich, dark and lovely. BUT-- if you ask me how long it took to get that espresso and my ice water? The answer would be about 35 minutes. No joke. No one at my table had a glass of water or a coffee after 20 minutes. Then all our drinks started to come out separately-- the server brought my friend's drinks out first, after about 20 minutes, and then eventually brought the rest (one by one) over the next 15 minutes. It was very frustrating. I've waited tables before and there is no reason not to get a table their drinks- no matter how busy you are. And the restaurant was by no means full. I hate being critical, but the RRC really needs to work on getting their serving game together-- prioritizing is the name of the game. Had the service been better, we definitely would have eaten there again during our week long visit. We'll try again next year-- and hope for the best! Service- 1 star, food-- 3.5.
