Everything was just ok but it is a great location right on the main street. The bang bang shrimp was so overcooked it was unappetizing. Now that I got that out of they way I will obviously tell you about the chicken pot pie. They are not kidding about the award they get for that dish. The crust was so yummy! This is a must! It could definitely be a shared dish too. So go in, grab a drink and the pot pie :) :)

Did not eat. Manager was rude. This review is not about food. I did not actually eat here because I was not given the opportunity to. My wife and I walked in with our child because they had a lit "Open" sign in the window of the restaurant side. Apparently we walked in a couple minutes after the restaurant closed. I was approached by the manager who let us know they were just closed which was fine so I decided to let them know about the lit "Open" sign in their window. Instead of apologizing or acknowledging the problem the manager decided to take the patronizing route and told me it was because there were still patrons dining inside. After she made sure to let me know in the rudest way possible that we were wrong for coming in, I decided they would never have my business.

Was a late night, bottom of the list choice to go here for dinner on a Sunday and it was nothing too great. The food was your typical, frozen- bagged, throw it in a microwave tasting variety. I ordered the nachos to share and my date got the bang bang shrimp. We weren't sure the shrimp was actually shrimp and the nachos were bland but generous. Beer selection was decent and bartenders were cheerful and helpful. Its ok; there's better choices on the same block but if in a pinch or a hurry and you're not too keen on receiving above average or amazing food.

First time at the Villager this week. Started off with a great margarita. Very clear, not filled with sugary crap like some margaritas. Right away I was smelling quality. Service was also very friendly and timely, another good sign. Venue is spacious with a couple of large rooms and a very long and welcoming bar. The entrees were all very well prepared. I ordered the Wet Chicken Burrito and it was as good as any burrito I've ordered from an actual Mexican place in a number of years. We had a few other fish orders and everyone was happy; walleye, perch, whitefish. All the kids had the usual Mac and cheese, grilled cheese, etc and they ate it all. When the bill came, it seemed like a good deal as well. All in all, if you are going out with a big group this is a really good place to stop or if you just want a cocktail and some well above average bar food this is the spot.

This has always been the locals inexpensive place for great bar food and drinks. If you want to eat make sure you arrive by about 9:30 to place your order. This year I arrived at prime dinner time and the line was out the door but luckily the hostess found me a nice quiet corner booth. I ordered the 2 piece fried whitefish with fries, tarter sauce and coleslaw. Just a tip here - IMO the tarter sauce is very bland. So I ordered a side of horseradish and mixed half of it with my bland tarter sauce and wowza I had one awesome tarter sauce to dip my fried whitefish in. Btw the whitefish here is excellent. Actually all the fried fish dinners are delish. My fries were nice size but cold. I didn't complain because I really just wanted the fish and coleslaw. They have a full bar and craft beers on tap. In the past I have ordered the fish chowder and salad and was disappointed. The servers are quick, friendly and hard working. Definitely check out my pic of the other menu items. Great place for locals and tourists.

20 years ago this was off the hook. Not any more. Onions aren't hand battered anymore. The fried White Fish was OK, I think they have changed the original batter from the original White Fish Company. Our server Chantel was the only redeeming thing about this place.

The fried whitefish was delicious. My husband had the blackened walleye, and it was also good! For the price, a great deal!

My husband and I tried this place for the first time based on recommendation of another bar owner and family, my husband enjoyed his Mexican entrée, it was a lot of food. However they do not know how to cook a patty melt medium rare, the outside was burned hardly any onions and the bread was bigger than the burger. Might try it again, depends. Waitress was good tho.

The villager is always a great place for fish and also Mexican food served in generous portions. At times during the summer months they can have a wait because this place is one of the best values to be found in downtown Charlevoix which also has consistent quality.

Get here early , place is packed being the only non expensive good food in town !

Best whitefish/walleye dinners within miles. Great service and a full range of draft craft beers. We've become regulars.

It was very busy and noisy but we were seated in about 5 min. We both enjoyed our dinners and our waitress was very attentive. Would definitely eat there again.

We were in charlevoix for a wedding and had an afternoon to kill before the nuptials began. We came here to grab lunch as the wedding wasn't to begin til 7pm. A friend suggested we try this place to eat. We were not disappointed. The food is good and quality. They serve large portions at a reasonable price. My husband had the fried whitefish and fries and I had a cheeseburger with onion rings. The server was super friendly and attentive. I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area.

First time in and ordered a burger. Was very good. Just done right with absolutely no complaints about it. Service was very fast and attentive to a party of about 10 we had. We came during lunch hours which may have helped. A lot going on interior wise but a lot in a very neat and orderly way, never felt like too many themes (kept with one theme). I will reccomend to others and will probably be back to get absolutely intoxicated! Lol high recommendation if your for a local bar.

Friendly service, great food. Hamburger was awesome, as was the grilled chicken sandwich along with the onion rings and mac and cheese bites. We were there in the late afternoon after spending several hours at Castle Farms, (which by the way is awesome go see it!), so the place was not crowded. Will definitely return if we are ever in the area.

You know seeing how many people this place packs in you'd think it'd be a great bar with fresh bar food. Instead what you're left with is a busy bar area with a side room that's as quiet as the early bird dinner of a cafeteria. With the food to match. My wife and I were in the area and decided to drop in and for some fish & chips. Stepping there's a decent size bar area with plenty of seating and noise you'd expect. I got kind of excited because it was the day time and the place had a steady flow of customers. Then I noticed that the gentleman standing in our way with a sour look on his face, worked there. He asked how many with a look of "I hate this shit" on his face. Then asked if wanted to sit in the bar area or a booth. We opted for a booth and were escorted to another room that felt like an entirely different restaurant. It was quiet as fuck! I saw a few older guys drinking so figured it didn't matter, I'd still get a beer. Our waitress was nice enough but not as attentive as I would of liked. I mean I kind of wanted two beers but she only came by every now and then. Anyways on to the food... We started with chips & queso dip. I'm pretty sure they opened a bag of tortilla chips, threw them under a heating lamp and tossed some seasoning on them. Then they cracked open a jar of queso dip and heated it up. Sure it was good but I was starving and could have done that at home. The white fish dinner consisted of two decent size pieces of fish. They were indeed white, nicely fried and crispy. However they left the skin on so that was kind of lame. The fries were straight out of a bag and were actually warm at most. Cole slaw was whatever. All in all, it's an ok place that needs serious help in the kitchen. The owner probably is ok with having an "ok" business with "ok" food. But eventually it'll catch up and people will stop showing up. The food is nothing new or inspired. It's basic food that is edible. The best part was the draft beer and the fish. Otherwise I'll pass.

This was a good place to go for my first taste of whitefish. I decided to try the blackened broiled whitefish, which the server described to me as being very spicy. Perhaps I am just more used to spicy food than most, but I found the heat to be at about a 2-3 on a scale of 1 to 10. That being said, I still enjoyed the whitefish a lot. We also started out with the fried zucchini -- yum! Not a bad meal, and it seems like a good, family friendly place.

We enjoyed The Villager. The fish was very good and the waitress was super friendly and efficient. They had a pretty good beer selection too.

Doesn't get any better. Hands down the best whitefish you can buy. Good food, good beer, good people!

Fried zucchini and fish and chips are GREAT! Service is always fast and good. Lots of beer choices too.

Whitefish was excellent as was the fish chowder. An absolute must-eat place in Charlevoix every time we visit.

  • Torrey R.

The decor was average, I suppose your typical pub/bar atmosphere with nothing special. The server was very nice and attentive. I ordered the BBQ sandwich which was pretty good but nothing to write home about. What I did like were the sweet potato fries. They were flavorful and pretty much saved the meal for me. I was just passing through town and next time will probably pass right by because it wasn't memorable for me.

The best fried whitefish in the world. Hands down. This is a super casual spot - great bar, great burgers. The owner if the host. Just super food in a fun atmosphere!

If you're visiting Charlevoix, you must get the fried whitefish and chips. I've been a vegetarian for eight years and I can still remember how good it is. The coleslaw is great too. If you don't like fish, the barbecue ribs are really good as well. For vegetarians, they do have a veggieburger... though it is just a frozen Gardenburger. But hey, that's a lot more than what most pubs have. Get the sweet potato frips (fries/chips) they're delicious. The service is usually pretty good (most of the waitstaff is really sweet) but during the summer it gets REALLY busy (and noisy), so plan on a bit of a wait.

I've had 3 good lunches here. Tasty micro brew selection on tap too.

  • Keith M.

I had to make sure I came back here a second time to make sure the first wasn't a lie... When you first bite into the perfectly prepared whitefish, you say...hmm was that really that good and then you take a second bite and before you know it, it's gone. It's that good, euphoria on a plate with a squeeze of lemon...and I did squeeze the lemon. Fries were good too, even the slaw was good, but the fish is SO GOOD that I think I actually dreamed about it the other day...really.

When my wife and I stay at our favorite B&B, it is often recommended that we try the Villager Pub for dinner. We heard quite often though that there is sometimes quite a wait, depending on what is going on in town. We arrived around dinner time on a Sunday and although the place was packed and we had to put our name on a list, we were seated in about 10 minutes. This place is known for their white fish and their burgers, so my wife and daughter had the burgers while I opted for a patty melt. My wife and daughter loved their burgers and my patty melt was the best patty melt I've ever tasted. The staff was very pleasant and attentive. We will definitely return here again on our next trip.

The best fried whitefish and chip dinner I have ever had. Fried zucchini is an awesome appetizer. You must try it! Burgers great too.

Had typical pub food, but the service was really fast. There were a ton of people, buy the meal came lightening quick. Portions were a good size.

If you live somewhere where fresh fish is expensive and hard to get, visit The Villager for some great fish and chips made from Michigan whitefish that is caught and delivered practically at The Villager's doorstep. The menu is not complex, and the atmosphere is distinctly "Northern Michigan" (complete with haggard old man hacking up a lung at the bar with a pack of unfiltered Camels), but the fish is terrific. They move a lot of fish here, and it's easy to see why.

I came here and ordered the wrong thing. I got a burger which was fantastic, but what I should of gotten was that chicken pot pie. I dont think I have ever had one that was better than this one! Luckily a couple people ordered it so that I could "try" it a couple of times!

Decent fish platter. Definitely good portions.

Whitefish and chips. Good Fish & Chips, but I was really disappointed that they did not make their own tarter sauce.

Best Whitefish I've had in a long time! Service was great...food was great. Definitely worth the stop...

Shared 3 piece whitefish, which came with fries and coleslaw. Nothing surprising, good or bad. Nice that the breading was actually light as advertised. Atmosphere was a healthy pub environment on a Saturday night in peak summer season.

Went here while vacationing at family cottage in Walloon Lake. I rarely eat fried food and haven't had fried fish in years but was told this restaurant was known for its fried whitefish so I gave it a try. It came lightly breaded with sides of coleslaw and french fries. I have to say it's probably the best fried fish I've ever had. Tartar sauce, in general, can be a bit mayo-ish but this sauce was flavorful and a great compliment to the fish, not the least bit overpowering. I would definitely come back again!

Being that Charlevoix is my hometown and having dined at the Villager oh about a thousand times I am likely quite bias. But I will say this, I don't care where you go, you will never ever have a 2 piece whitefish dinner like that one you get a the Villager. Seriously it is undeniably the best white fish I have ever had (and I have tried a lot after living in Chicago with some of the best restaurants around, this still gets my vote as the best), wish my stomach could handle the three piece dinner because this meal is that good. Many other items on their menu are good, the beer selection is fine, and the bar makes good drinks but the whitefish dinner cannot be beat. If you are just traveling through be sure to stop at the Villager for this particular meal.

Ah, the Villager. Well known for many things, though primarily as a local haunt for transient visitors (fudgies - as the locals call them), and Charlevoix denizens all the same. It's a bar, with bar food - not much to say beyond that.

I was extremely disappointed with this pub which is nestled right in the downtown area of Charlevoix. We were visiting a friend and ended up choosing to go here. The interior was split, when you walk in there is a "bar" area then you walk into the "restaurant" area to the right. I thought both spaces were lacking something. Not to mention somewhat dirty. They menu resembled typical bar menu except the various dishes headlining their whitefish. I got the blackened whitefish tacos per the servers recommendation. Wow, for starters, this was as aesthetically pleasing as a plate of baby vomit. The slaw which may have had a unique flavor, resembled regurgitated baby food, and the blackened fish didn't help the bland presentation. The overall taste wasn't horrible, I ended up finishing the meal, but it was a D at best. It actually reminded me of one of those places that end up on the Restaurant Impossible desperately needing a makeover. The server was nice, that was about the only saving grace, if there was one. I would definitely try another restaurant before venturing into this one. Good luck

Ordered the whitefish and perch dinners. The perch was heavily breaded and kind of tough. The whitefish was better. The coleslaw the meals were served with seemed like it was some mass produced, scooped out of a bucket, attempt at a side salad. The tartar sauce seemed about the same. I think I'll try a new place the next time I'm in town.

  • Jessica R.

Friendly staff and fairly quick service. Does not serve bud light which I found weird. I ordered the chicken sandwich and they out the wrong cheese on it and the chicken was very dry and burnt on the edges..

Good bar food (if not a more expansive menu), great view of the TV to watch [insert game of choice here]. A lively atmosphere in the evening. The place to be for a comfortable, familiar-like bar scene.

  • B M.

I've eaten here a few times last year, as I was in town a couple of times on business. I have had the whitefish as a dinner and as a sandwich, both were very good and not over cooked. I had lake perch and walleye here too. Right on the main drag and right down town this place attracts a crowd. I will eat here again when I am in town.

    (4)
  • Todd W.

Wow. Great place to eat. Terrific wait staff and food, and the owner, Terry, greets every customer himself. Fantastic chicken pot pies on Thursdays, and great homemade spaghetti on Wednesdays. Jodi and Debbie, the bartenders, as well as Caitlin, Kris, Krista, and Haley, the waitresses, make you feel special no matter how busy they are. No visit to Charlevoix is complete with out several meals at The Villager
