I love hilltop and eat there regularly, they have homemade soup everyday and the best breakfast around. They have a large selection and cater to all ages from happy face pancakes, big salads, wonderful sandwiches, or just a piece of pie and coffee. I would recommend you try it.

Recently was in the area and decided to finally give the Hilltop Cafe a try. They have a good selection on their menu, maybe too many as it took a while to decide what to order. The staff was very attentive and accommodating (we had a small infant in our party and needed a highchair, etc. for her.) The servers were great in explaining any questions you had re: the menu items (some are "Yankee Foods" and being from The South, are either called something else here or not on the menu. The menu is part of the charm of this place, its a Non-Franchise operation, serves local and regional favorites, not chain items), very prompt and made sure you had what you wanted / needed (they did not pull a disappearing act after giving you your foods.) The food was pretty well what you would expect from a place like this, down-home country cooking, nothing exotic, just good tasting. As long as one is not looking for sushi, this restaurant ought to suit your needs and desires.

It was a Sunday morning and very busy, both waitresses ran the floor like a tight ship. They greeted everyone and service was excellent and fast. Food was fine, like any kind of breakfast place. What made the experience great was the staff, never had to ask for a refill or anything. Wish I remembered their names.

We've actually eaten at Hilltop in Buchanan MI several dozen times over the years, going back to when it used to have the tiny area sectioned off for non-smokers. (It's now smoke-free) I mention this to make a point that we've eaten there quite a bit, and the food was always good, decently portioned, and reasonably priced. You can usually tell a good restaurant by how full the parking lot is on a weekend (or at breakfast time), and they were no exception. There were Saturday and Sunday mornings when it was SRO and we had to go somewhere else to eat. Anyway, having said all that, the place has changed--and that is the reason for my two star rating. The restaurant is still very clean and service is good, the smoke-free atmosphere is a plus, but the food is way off-base from what it was. The normally great omelets and malted-batter pancakes are so-so now, the omelets being overcooked and smallish pancakes made with cheap, wheaty tasting batter. My daughter had the french toast the other day--normally three thick slabs of bread--now, two very small pieces of bread, and either over-cooked (or microwaved). I also ordered their french dip sandwich with soup (versus fries). Soup was luke warm, and sandwich was disappointingly small for $6. The dill pickle I received with it literally being the size of a small french fry. I asked the waitress if it was a sample, to which she had no answer. You might say that I should take this up with the management--well I have, and I did it constructively. Hopefully, someone from there reads this and understands why people aren't crowding into the place anymore.

Yes, this is HOME Cooking if your mom opened up cans and thawed frozen food. I expected the Tomato Rosamaria soup to be a rosemary graced tomato soup. IT had nor herbs, was merely canned tomato chunky soup. I ordered the Orange Rougy; it was formed patties that came from a food service's frozen fish food. It was tasteless. The tartar sauce was in little plastic tubs. The baked potato was also pre-cooked & microwaved. I like finding little out of the way places, some are incredible treasures. But this was overpriced, gaggy yucky food. Service was also poor

For the price, this place is REALLY hard to beat for what you get. The food is solid - very traditional family restaurant food. The inside looks new and is clean. If you're in the mood for a good hot sandwich or a dinner under $5, stop here!
