I'm not a sushi person but I love sushi zen. Really nice atmosphere. I usually take my seat at the bar and watch them make the food. It's pretty busy 7 days a week so you know there doing something right. The soup and salad is really good. I also really like the Chicago roll, u of m roll and firecracker roll.

I'm not sure why this place has over 4 stars. Brighton doesn't really have a lot of Japanese or other Asian residents and therefore, no good sushi restaurants. My friend and I tried a few rolls to go with our cocktails. Most rolls have eel sauce, mayo, crunchies and cream cheese. Very Americanized "sushi". Our meal wasn't all that memorable.

Hipsters come and get your low grade sushi at rediculously high prices! I've been to sushi bars nationwide and found this place to be as low grade as one possibly could muster. It seems that many corners are cut as far a quality product are concerned. The sashimi was average grade (was even served salmon with skin remnants on it) The rolls were sloppily put together, falling apart as soon as chopsticks hit them. Also, it seems that every roll was a slight variation on itself only with more or less sauce. Rolls should have 4-5 different components that contrast in taste that come together in each bite. These rolls can be found in your local grocery store. The rice was by far the most upsetting of the whole experience. Uncle Ben would have been proud that his product is being served daily. Topping it off, the staff was inexperienced and very aloof. We were sat down and forgotten about, only having to grab the nearest "manager" for service. Overall, we ended up spending more money here than than any other place we have eaten at, leaving us feeling robbed.

Best sushi around. The presentation is really nice and the fish is really fresh and consistently delicious. Never had a bad time at the zen. The crazy girl roll is Bomb. Calamari roll is a killer deal. Also the udon noodles are good if you don't want sushi. I always get the Cajun tuna sashimi it taste like Cajun steak.

A visiting SoCal sushi queen, thought I'd try it out, run down parking lot, wasnt sure about going in to try it, but did go in, found it to be quite pleasant and peaceful. No funny smells, nice decor, and adequate seating. Decided to eat at the bar. Sunday, at 4pm.. Not overly busy, but ordering was fast, waiting for quite a bit of time. Good selection of beer, wine, sake, mixed drinks. Rolls are 11.00-15.00.. Fish was good quality, not superior.. Presentation was average. Overall, enjoyable, and satisfying. I would come back when in the area. Happy to have another option here. Bill total 100.00, 1 beer, 4 rolls, 2 sashimi, dessert, and appetizer, plus tip. Pricey. But, remember, Michigan is far from the fishies home.. Give it a try!

Best sushi around!! I absolutely love this place and frequent it often. It can get pretty busy on Friday and Saturday nights but it's worth the wait. The Kiss of Fire roll is my favorite and the bento boxes are huge!

Surprisingly great place if you're in the mood for sushi! Stopped in on a Thursday night with my guy and the place was full. From the exterior you would imagine it to be a little dive spot, dark and dingy maybe, however the interior and the atmosphere inside is anything but. The food was fresh, the soup hot (perfect for the rainy day we had) and the ginger dressing tasted homemade, it had the best flavor! The have an excellent sushi roll menu. Some classics and some unique ones too! Our waitress, Gabrielle, was great. She was efficient and friendly and kept a smile on our faces. There were a few other employees that would swing by randomly to collect empty dishes and such also. Kudos to the teamwork mentality at this place. We will back frequently, I'm certain of that. So glad we found a great sushi joint in Brighton!

If yelp should have a 6th star, this place would deserve it...a New York City experience in a strip mall..:who knew

This is for the food (sushi) only. I did not step foot into this restaurant. My boyfriend went in to get the order that we called in earlier. We got 3 rolls to go that we ate in the car because we had just finished snowboarding. The Philadelphia Roll had slimey, not fresh tasting salmon in it and tasted the worst of the three rolls. I would've expected this from a buffet. The MSU roll was just simply not very appetizing and the tempura was not crispy enough or not fried enough so it got soft/soggy fast. The Eel sauce was crappy quality in my opinion. It was of very thin consistency (like soy sauce) and it was too sweet. (I love eel sauce usually but not from here) The caterpillar roll was the best of the three but, I still wasn't pleased. Eel was the only meat/fish in the roll and there was barely the smallest sliver of it in each piece of sushi. (The only reason I got this roll was because I love eel) Bummer that there wasn't more! I will never eat food from here again.

As big sushi fans from out West, we love good sushi but have high expectations. We have been patronizing Sushi Zen since they opened and they deserve the success they've had, they hold their own with great sushi places in San Francisco and Honolulu. The only problem is, now it's so crowded sometimes you can't get in without a big wait! Worth it though!

I was in Brighton area, shopping and wanted sushi lunch. I knew that my favorite Miki\Sushi Zen had another location in Brighton, so I looked it up. Same menu as the Ann Arbor location, however, I was informed that they are not longer associated with the A2 location. Very nice dining room, though the storefront was very off-putting. It looks like a stripmall quick stop from the parking lot. They share a parking lot with CVS. I sat at the sushi bar. I ordered sashimi lunch and an U of M roll. Very nice and fresh sushi and roll. The waitress was pretty busy by the time I was finished, so I went up to the counter to pay. All and all the visit was fine and just what I wanted. I would be back if the area.

My daughter and I have become regulars at this delicious sushi house. We have eaten our way through the menu and look forward to returning! Everything has always been fresh and served with such a friendly smile we both feel welcomed and wanted back!

Amazingly great sushi. I've been here twice, with my boyfriend. He turned me on to this place. We had a smorgasbord of rolls on my first visit, along with a live scallop. The second visit included the Black Dragon, fatty tuna and white tuna and Ahi tuna told. Delicious! From the decor to the food to the service, this place is a surprising gem in a small Midwestern town.

Wow. Just, wow. I didn't think there would be a good sushi place in Brighton. I mean, it's Brighton! And this place is in a strip m all next to an O'Reilly's autoparts! It's good, though. Really. I got some coupons for this place in the mail and figured after all the good I had heard, all the local awards this place got, I would finally go in and try it. I thought the locals were crazy, that no one in Brighton knew what good sushi was and voted this place so high because they were nuts. They aren't nuts. I went in and immediately I wasn't in a strip mall. There isn't an O'Reilly's autoparts store next door. I was in a beautifully, clean, spacious restaurant. It was gorgeous inside. The sushi bar in the back was staffed, not with grumpy, grungy teens, but with several clean, busy chefs which greeted me happily. I sat at the bar, because I enjoy watching them work. If I had any complaint, it was that their menu is HUGE and the variety of rolls they have is mind-blowing. Every one I've had has been delicious. I had the fried dumplings, incredible. Seaweed salad, delicious. The service is amazing. I've had two very courteous waitresses. One of the sushi chef's wife and young son came in and he introduced me to his little boy (who is incredibly adorable). This place is my new go-to spot for sushi. Apparently those people in Brighton know good sushi....

I love sushi. We are regular sushi eaters....like twice a week. We tried sushi zen on the recommendation of my hairdresser. Nothing was really horrible, but nothing was really good either. The edamame was too big and tough, appetizers were fair to middling, but most disappointing was the sushi itself. The rolls were not tight, so they fell apart as you picked them up, and they were generally mediocre. Also, the menu is just way too big.....which is never a good sign. The rolls are also a couple dollars more than what we usually pay at our favorite place, which is consistently excellent. Everything seems clean, so there is that. Service was fine. When we definitely won't be back though.

  • Lauren T.

The service is quick and friendly and the food is delicious! The prices are very reasonable. For a California roll and a crab roll it is only $9.54. I have dined in and done take out and have been pleased with both. The menu has a huge variety to choose from. I would recommend to anyone and everyone!

  • Sarah C.

Do not let this location fool you. It's in a little plaza so you think "Hmm idk should i really get sushi from a plaza? " However walk inside and find that this is a very nice restaurant! And the staff is great! The sushi is so amazing here, so fresh and they have SOOOOO much to choose from. So many rolls the menu is gigantic! We go here probably once a week to get our sushi on! The prices are reasonable as well. Good miso soup and salad to start the meal off right. Love this place!! Like really love this place!

Best Sushi in all of Livingston and Oakland county. I have been coming to this location for years and they have NEVER disappointed. Friendly staff, nice ambiance, great food, and they acquired a liquor license a couple years ago making it an even more enjoyable experience!

Delicious. I always worry when ordering sushi from a place I never have tried before but Sushi Zen did not disappoint. Everything was tidy and the sushi is right up my alley. Will buy again.

I love it. A great sushi restaurant. I've had sushi in 30 cities. I've had good sushi, bad sushi, and downright wrong sushi. I have always enjoyed my time and eats here. I especially enjoy the local elements they incorporate into the menu names. It's a fin place! Hah! See what I did right there?

I went here for a friends 35th birthday party. The atmosphere is pretty good. Pretty standard for a sushi restaurant. The service we recieved was pretty lackluster. At one point I don't think she checked on our table for at least 15 minutes. As far as the sushi, it was pretty good but the menu seemed to be filled with fried sushi. I'm not a huge fan. I personally dislike fried food and it seems to me to ruin the taste of the fresh ingredients of good sushi.

I am so glad that I live in Howell now so that I can make more frequent trips to this restaurant. Before, when I lived in Lansing, I would make the hike as often as possible to meet my friend here for sushi and drinks. The rolls are phenomenal and always well prepared - I've never had one fall apart on me or deliver less than what was expected. The roll selection is broad and varied, as well as the wine and drink list. I can't speak to other areas of the menu, because I've only ever had specialty rolls here. The service is great. The staff was always checking in and making sure we were well accommodated, both with our food and our drinks. Once or twice we've even sat at the bar area, and the sushi chefs were joyful and entertaining. The price is admittedly slightly higher than other sushi establishments, but if you believe me that a 45 minute drive was worth the food - please believe me that the extra dollar or two is also worth it.

I've been here before and the food has been pretty decent. I normally get the Kalbi bento box (which is fantastic M'mmmm), but this time as the weather was kinda cold, I wanted soup. I got the Udon bowl. Came soup hot (temp) which was great, but they added green and red bell peppers to the broth, which is NOT traditional. Made my soup taste southwestern. I didn't care for this udon this time. Note: I think they changed owners since the last time I've been here so could be the reason for the bell peppers.

Tried this place for the first time. No wait around 3pm on a Saturday, service was excellent. I was catching up with a friend and there was no rush. I tried the strawberry blossom roll, AMAZING! Almost like a dessert sushi because it was sweet. The standards like their avocado roll, Philly roll, and chicken teriyaki roll were excellent. My friend tried the autumn roll and hidden dragon roll, also delicious. Love this place and can't wait to go again!

Fantastic lunch! The lunch special at $12 seems expensive but I recommend it for a good experience. The quality is top notch.

We absolutely LOVE Sushi Zen! We were frequent diners when it first opened, probably 3-4 times a month. After being relocated to Cleveland for 4 years, we finally moved back to MI and were so excited to visit our favorite place once again! We were not disappointed! It has only gotten better over time. The remodel is gorgeous. The staff is so week trained, very knowledgable and perfectly attentive. But of course, what keeps us coming back is the sushi. Incredibly fresh and creative rolls. We always have a hard time picking what we want and always order way too much, but we just can't help it. It is that good! If you're in town, do yourself a favor and check out this gem!!

  • Kate P.

The only reason why Sushi Zen didn't get 5 stars is because the miso soup in not vegan, otherwise, this place rocks. They always prepare my veggie sushi separate from the other rolls & always place in on its own plate. The entire staff is friendly & helpful and the place, though always packed, is still always very clean. My kids love it, I love it, it's what's good with sushi.

Good value and good quality sushi. The lunch specials provide a large portion for an excellent price. Good turnaround time on takeout orders. The fish always seems to be fresh.

I think this is the best sushi in town. I drive 20 miles for it. It's incredibly fresh, the sushi melts in your mouth. I think it's the best kept secret...shhhh. I love the fire cracker and the ninja rolls. Really good. I've only had sushi here but they also seem to have an extensive list of non sushi items on the menu.

  • Drew D.

My whole family including myself have been going to sushi Zen for years now and has become the favorite of both my grandparents, the sushi is undisputedly the best! But don't be scared to try other dinners on the menus because they are great too! All in all the service is fantastic and will always greet us with a smile and welcome us back. The plating is awesome as well, there arnt many places where they will bring a 3 ft long boat out covered in assorted sushi! Go! Go! Go!

Late summer 2013. Stopped for a quick bite on my return trip to A2. I had been informed by family that the sushi was very good and very affordable! I was making multiple trips back and forth from Ann Arbor to Heartland to spend time with my brother and my nephew. Since I am always open to eating regardless of time I would stop to pick up milkshakes for the boys on my way in ANC eat or snack on the way back. Menu is extensive- lots of unique variation of sushi rolls. Soy paper available for substitution. A few rolls tempura battered and fried ( so much less healthy but dang- I love them!) The lunch special includes a small green salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. Sushi and service were above average. I observed them handle a situation with a customer that was unhappy with the level of heat in their roll, they were very responsive offering to remove it and modify the roll to suit the customer. Nice. I'll return when I'm in the area for sure!

  • Jennifer W.

We drive 45 minutes for this sushi!! You'll be pleasantly surprised at the wide array of specialty sushi rolls they offer. And, they are all FANTASTIC! A mai tai along with my sushi is always a must when I'm here. It depends on the day/time but I've dined here midday-- no wait. Saturday night-- long wait. But... Who cares? Grab a cocktail and wait for your table... It's zen. ;)

Sushi Zen truly has the best sushi and rolls in the country. My husband and I love sushi and have eaten it in many places and we always say that Sushi Zen is the best. The sushi is so fresh and they have a large variety of creative rolls. The owners and staff are so friendly and accommodating and they do a great job! I highly recommend enjoying a meal at Sushi Zen.

Sushi Zen is amazingly great, I am visiting for business and it is always good to find a great restaurant. This was recommended by a Brighton local and he was right in suggesting it for dinner. They have a large menu with many choices. I had the King Salmon, Kiss of Fire Tuna Roll and Cajun Tuna Sushi. Every bit was enjoyed. The meal comes with Miso soup and salad. You will not be disappointed. My server Sara was wonderfully attentive and happy.

  • Meg K.

Wow, creative menu! There were so many combinations it was almost overwhelming to order. The Tuna Tower appetizer was a winner on all counts: Artistic presentation, fresh and flavorful ingredients, perfect blend of textures, fun and tasty to eat. Our sushi rolls were delicious, but not quite that melt-in-the-mouth tender freshness. We will defintely go back. Excellent service.

  • Laura J.

Sushi a la America. Baked or fried, odd, not great. Had the Hot Spider (2/5), White Cajun (4.5/5) and the super tuna (2/5). The soup and salad were not very good, be sure to check the dressing on the salad before you order. Kind of weird. Better sushi to be found at Sagano without a doubt.

So many rolls to choose from and you won't be disappointed. It is really neat to watch the sushi chefs prepare the rolls. It's truly and art and the presentation is fantastic.

Ate here for the first time on Friday will be back for sure. The rolls were amazing! Salad had a bit too much dressing for me but if u got it on the side I am sure it would be fine. Loved the atmosphere and our server was very attentive. Overall very positive experience for a first time sushi experience!

I love the ginger salad dressing, the #20 Alpine Roll is delish, the flavored sake & sake bombs are on point. The menu is extensive and kind of overwhelming but I go & enjoy often.

Great sushi! Don't be fooled by the exterior if this place....it's fabulous inside and the sushi is top notch! :) ginger dressing could be a little less sweet but otherwise this place is amazing!

This place does have good sushi. We spent $200+ on our meal and tried all sorts of specialty rolls, and they were quite authentic, like the rolls we've had in Japan. But I really wish this place wasn't so expensive.

  • Mike R.

The remodeling they have done to this place is spectacular! The sushi is very fresh unlike it used to be. I lived in Hawaii for 4 years and this sushi is almost as good as right from the ocean to your plate.

I live in Howell, and this place is by far the best sushi restaurant around. I previously lived in Ann Arbor, and this Sushi Zen compares to the many delicious sushi restaurants there. Sushi is very good. There are a large variety of rolls to choose from (unlike some other 'sushi' restaurants in the area). I've also had noodle dishes and udon soup and those were also great. Miso soup and ginger salad are complimentary with rolls or a meal and are delicious. Service has always been excellent, even when the restaurant is busy. The restaurant was renovated recently (I believe last year), and I absolutely love what they've done with the space. If you have a group, there are large, circular, fairly private booths. If you haven't checked this place out I highly recommend it!

As a returning customer to this establishment numerous times, I would have to say my experience here unexpectedly got worse once they went through with remodeling. I enjoyed the small comfortable environment. Don't get me wrong it does look beautiful after expanding. As I continued to come here to eat the service became worse and worse. Servers forgetting entrees, the sushi tasting extremely fishy. No refills. It's almost like staff is brainlessly walking around. I tend to order sashimi as well as an order of yaki soba. My 4th time ordering it was different and the server did not explain the dish with mushrooms being added. They were very nice with taking it off the bill and replacing it completely. It is sad to say I am not impressed with the service or the food recently. From going there once a week to once every two months.

Easily the best restaurant in Brighton. Great decor, friendly attentive staff, great food, and a reasonable price. The Chief's special is always creative, delicious, and a good size portion. Only lost a star because the wait staff and manager only have a peripheral knowledge of the menu.

  • Adam L.

This place has an amazing selection of sushi! I stopped in on a whim as I was passing through Brighton and have to say I was shocked. They have some of the best sushi that I've ever tasted hands down. Watching the line of chefs expertly craft the food was amazing, especially the one who was garnishing the plates. The only thing that I have to criticize was our server. She wasn't very attentive and had zero personality.

BEST SUSHI PLACE in the area!! We went on the suggestion of friends about 4 years ago and have been in love with it ever since. We have taken probably about 20+ friends there when they visit and all of them request a return. There rolls are not only fresh and delicious but reasonably priced. They have good miso soup and the ginger dressing on their salad is to die for! I recommend the Superman Roll and the Crazy Boy. Their Bento boxes are good. I have been going for years and have NEVER had a poor experience. On top of all of these great things the service is top notch as well. Always greeted with smile, and promptly seated even when its busy. Brighton has a real gem in Sushi Zen.

When my husband and I lived near Brighton, we went to Sushi Zen weekly. So many amazing rolls to choose from. We make an effort to come back several times a year because it's outstanding! One of our favorite restaurants!!!

Excellent! 5 Stars! I only gave them 4 stars because they're closed for 2 hours a day, they don't even mention it on their website and their website is awful. They're menu's a mess. Other than that, they're Awesome!! My favorite place for Sushi! MSU is the Best!

  • Karen S.

Disappointed. Place looks nice and we were seated quickly, but that was the best part. We found inedible fibers in the salad dressing. After looking around for our waitress (We could see her in back rolling silverware, but she never looked out to see us.) for about 5-10 minutes, we finally got the attention of another waitress. After another 5 minutes, the manager came by and explained that they were from the fresh ginger and that it's common hete. Really? Your cooks don't know how to use a strainer? Then we got our meals. My husband got a mountain of undercooked tofu in a watery, taseless teryaki sauce. I got seven pieces of vegetable tempura with the tempura sauce bowl sitting in a mound of wasabi. Not worth $15.95. Service and food were both indifferent. I guess we paid the high price for the interior, because the food wasn't worth it.

Second time visiting last night and this time i brought my friends to this place with to introduce this place to my friends but came with feeling bad to my friends. While we were on our way to this restaurant we called and made a reservation for seats just in case we can get seated right away (about 70mins away from where we live) and they let us do it this time cause it was Tuesday even though they don't normally take reservation 2 hours before the time customers wants to get seated. when we got there around 7 it was packed and we saw there were quite of people waiting to be seated. We set at our reserved table and looked over the menu and waited for our waitress to come and get our drink order. 5mins passed 10mins passed still nobody comes over to our table and we asked to hostess to ask our waitress to come over and they told us there was a problem with communicating between wait staff. I understand cause it happens sometimes when dinning gets busy and packed. I asked busboy who was cleaning table right next to our table how many waitstaff are working today just for curiosity and he told me he can't tell that to me which was little weird... After we ordered our meal, i went to restroom to wash my hands before i eat something and on my way to restroom i looked at sushi bar and i see today there were 6 sushi chefs which was surprising cause this was first time i saw that many sushi chefs in one restaurant (even though some of them are helper not a actual chef). Food didn't take that long but the problem was we ordered appetizer too and our main dish came out before the appetizer came out and she told us that we have to wait for more time for us to get our appetizer. Some appetizers do take more time than other appetizers but if it takes little longer than main dish can be waited. Appetizer is for eating before your main dish comes out not after your main dish came out 10 mins before. Also i was waiting for my specialty roll that i've ordered together with my Sushi Premium (Sushi bar entree) and found out they forgot to make it and had to wait again for that. Koroke appetizer came out really big portion but the taste was not good at all. Tuna R that comes with Sushi Premium has too much of a rice. Black Jack Roll tasted good just little bit more spicy than i was expected. Kalbi dinner that one of my friend ordered tasted good as well. One of the Roll my friend ordered i can't remember the name of it and it was too oily taste so she only ate one bite and i had one bite that's all (the roll was not whole deep fried but inside they had fried stuff in it). Overall i've found out not a good idea to order kitchen appetizers from my both experience from this restaurant (kitchen appetizer i've ordered wasn't good enough as well when i came here first time about 2 weeks ago). Excitements to make my friends to try nice dinner here but came out disappointed for voted number one Japanese restaurant in Michigan last year.

Happy to agree with the many who know this place to be a miraculous find in the flats of southeastern Michigan, far better than any sushi place in overhyped Ann Arbor. Perfect friendly, fast but relaxed, responsive service, a warm, happy, noisy atmosphere, generous portions, huge roll selection plus a larger, varied menu. The negamaki could have been fresher, but otherwise no obvious food complaint; freshly made sushi. An award goes to their giant Shrek roll. I need a few more visits to explore the large selection of items, the sake and the consistent freshness of the fish - but we can't wait to return! It was a first visit for all, and the friends with us have lived in Brighton for decades! Now SZ has four new, devoted customers! A fifth star will be reserved for confirmational return visits.

I've been debating back and forth about this review for a few days, but in the end, if we're not giving honest reviews, then what's the point of Yelp? We found this place in a little strip mall sometime last year, and since then we've been hitting it every time we're in the area, always receiving excellent service and sushi. That was then, unfortunately that's not the experience we had this time. It had been a few months since we were in Brighton, we had to be in Ann Arbor in about an hour so we stopped for a quick bite of sushi like we had previously. When we walked in we were pleasantly surprised with a beautifully remodeled restaurant. The place was about 3/4 full, we were promptly seated at the sushi bar. Our waiter was there almost immediately taking our drink order, so far things are going well. Upon looking at the menu I found 60 some odd "special rolls" all of which had cucumber which makes the roll taste fresh, mixed with a combination of cream cheese, tempura, mayo, cheese, heavily applied sauces, and/or deep fried preparation, all of which overpower any flavor present in the fish. This made me a little suspicious as any time a sushi restaurant goes out of it's way to not showcase it's fish, it's a bit of a warning sign. But with our previous experiences here I just assumed that they were catering to what the locals wanted and proceeded to place our order with our attentive waiter, so far so good. Fast forward to 45 minutes later, we still haven't received our meal. Our waiter is apologetic, trying to take care of the situation, we're obviously not happy, but it's not his fault. He tries to get his manager to see what they could do to take care of the issue, but his manager and the owner were busy, and he wasn't allowed to make any customer service decisions. How can everyone in charge be busy? The restaurant industry is a service industry, if you're not there to serve your customers maybe you should find a different industry. At that point I was thinking, well, the place is poorly managed, but as long as the food comes soon it'll be ok. A few minutes later our meal arrives, only making things worse. Our rainbow roll, which was colorful, had very little flavor distinction between the various types of fish, same story with the dragon roll. The avocado in the eel and avocado roll as well as the avocado roll was turning brown, The eel, which is normally served heated was roughly room temperature, same with the other fish, it wasn't noticeably cold, but much closer to room temperature. Now on to what's usually the star of the show, the nigiri sushi, we ordered white tuna and smoked salmon. The white tuna was acceptable, but not super fresh, the smoked salmon, which would normally be the most flavorful thing on the plate was bland and flavorless. Overall, the sushi was no better than what you can find on any "Asian buffet". In the end, we ended up paying $60 for low quality sushi that wasn't worth half that. It makes me sad to see what's happened here, this formerly stellar sushi bar is now all style with no substance. I understand the remodel was expensive, and buying quality ingredients is a large expense. But, if the focus isn't shifted back to the food it'll close and be a great opportunity for another sushi chef that cares about quality.

The food was absolutely delicious, the wine refreshing, the atmosphere relaxing, and the humor of the waitress and the chefs extraordinaire! Great experience with great food. Definitely recommended!

I went here for dinner while in town with my family and it was delicious. The 6 of us were seated right away and the service was very speedy. We ordered 8 rolls (I can't remember all of them but I know they included the Red Wings roll, the TNT roll, the Blizzard roll, the Sakura roll, the St. Patrick's roll, and a few others). We ordered so many rolls that the waitstaff brought them out to us on a sushi boat! A+ for presentation. The rolls that were supposed to be spicy were very pleasantly so. The Sakura roll and the Red Wings roll were AWESOME, and the TNT was the best bang for your buck. My mom also had some sweet plum wine that was scrumptious -- I will have to remember to get a glass next time.

I really liked the variety of the rolls. I had two and they were really tasty and filling. The soup was good. Reasonable drinks too. Staff very attentive and good to chat with. I travel almost weekly and always try a sushi place. This is the second time I have been here. Both were really good. The first time I was here, they were getting really crowded. I offered up the rest of my table to a couple and we had a great time. Will come back .

Fantastic sushi and kudos on the expansion. If the number of people at yesterday's "grand opening" are any indication... definitely going to need the extra space! Haven't been able to find better sushi. Staff = top-notch. Looking forward to many return visits!

By far the best sushi in the area! A little pricey, but worth it! Snowman roll & MSU rolls are the best! However, I wish they were open all day, they close for a few hours right after lunch.

Wow, I'm really torn on this one. Four or five stars? I've only been here once, but it is sushi, that's easy to mess up. And they didn't. My wife and I came in for dinner sans the children and unknowingly ordered enough for three people. The nigiri was fairly large, much larger than I expected because many places I've been serve tiny sushi nigiri. Not Sushi Zen. Each piece was a complete mouthful for me. The maki were huge and somewhat unusually presented. My wife ordered one roll that contained tempura shrimp. The heads were deep fried and placed in the center of our platter--quite beautifully presented actually. I look forward to returning.

I rarely give five-star reviews of anything, food or otherwise, and this place deserves it. Not that they have the best sushi on the planet, but they do the best with what they can get locally, do it in a really nice setting, with really nice people (with one exception of a brunette hostess who hopefully not work there much longer). The prices, for sushi, are not bad. We usually get the sushi regular, which is a chef's choice of sushi, and then add a couple rolls. This keeps the price down and encourages us to try new things. I love the way the community has embraced this (local) place, it is obviously popular, and I love seeing little kids getting sushi with their parents at the bar.

AMAZING sushi. Nothing I've ever had from here was a letdown. If you order even one roll you get a ginger salad and miso soup which are pretty tasty. I love their miso soup here. There's an endless selection of rolls plus all your basics. It's on the higher end pricewise compared to other well-rated sushi places like Noble Fish. That's alright, as you get way more food for that extra price. I used to live near Noble Fish and ate it almost every weekend. I needed three rolls to be stuffed. Two rolls from Sushi Zen will have you needing a nap. The presentation of their rolls alone makes this worth the trip. Caterpillar rolls crawling out of vases down leaves, etc. They put some time and effort into their layouts so points for that. Wait staff is always friendly and prompt. Their to-go process is pretty painless too, call ahead and just walk up to the counter five feet inside the door, pay and be on your way. Too bad they quit putting the $5 off $25/$10 off $50 coupons in the scab papers. I used to hit this place up more frequently when they were doing that (hint hint management!).

Saki bomb: sapporo Diablo and firecracker rolls Green tea and red bean icecream Quaint little place. It's sorta pleasant to go to a sushi spot that isn't decked out in modern chic. It was simply adorned with probably one of each bottle of alcohol they sold and a few bamboo looking pots. My server, Jackie, was prolly the sweetest server I've had in maybe forever. Made sure I got what I wanted and even comped the ice-cream. The sushi rolls were most fulfilling. I was tempted to order some fried tofu but had to skip it. Not the most interesting entry but I've had sushi so many times =P

Dear Sushi Zen, I love you. Not in a grocery store kinda sushi way, but in a handcrafted bits of yummy heaven kind of way. This is real. This is real good. Thank you for only being 20 minutes from my door and doing carry out. My tummy is yours alone, Jen

My experience at Sushi Zen was ok. The salad had a ginger dressing with a zing to it. It was very good. I had a spider roll and yellowtail roll. The yellowtail was very good as well. The rice wasn't the greatest and my spider roll had lettuce in it that made it very bland. Also the tempura batter was a bit overwhelming. Again, an ok sushi experience, but nothing special.

Sushi Zen is a great sushi restaurant. It is smaller and cozy and always busy. They have a sushi bar and many tables. Their takeout is prepared with as much care as in house meals. I have had many of their specialty rolls and their Gyoza. All have been excellent. I am looking forward to trying their meat meals as well. They offer Kalbi and Bulgogi. I am expecting great things!

Delicious sushi...even my 9 year old is hooked! Her favorite in the Ninja roll which has tuna and salmon in it. The special rolls are absolutely huge and the sushi menu is veryyy extensive. The place is kind of small - that would be my only complaint. It is apparent that these guys love what they do - their passion shows through in their menu and presentation. One of the best restaurants in town.

After two attempts to get a decent meal I give up. I eat sushi at least three times a week and have never had such poor service and lousy food. On the first trip I had the chef's choice for lunch- the bulk of the meal was "sushi pizza"- imitation crab sandwiched between tortillas- yuck. So I gave it a second chance and have to say I didn't get to try the food because I couldn't get served. They were not overly crowded and I was in fact the ONLY person sitting at the bar. While waitstaff moved about I was given a menu and sat for 20 minutes without being acknowledged. Don't waste your time on this one- poor value, week food, and lousy service!!

I have been going to Sushi Zen since it opened more than 3 years ago. I lived in Ann Arbor for three years and was turned on to sushi by a couple friends. It is not an easy task to find quality sushi that is at its best. Then there is the task of making it taste good. Sushi Zen has created a solid reputation of acquiring the freshest ingredients treating them right and twisting them into a delicious roll. All the servers are hilarious and extremely helpful and I love that the owners are there regularly. Sushi Zen is the only place to get sushi in Brighton, and its food rivals that of some of the best sushi restaurants I have ever been to.

This place is great. An old friend and I decided to stop here and try it out since it is about halfway between our homes and we didn't regret it. It was a bit hard to find because it is tucked back in a strip mall next to Murray's. The sushi was very tasty. The crunch roll and diablo roll were superb. The tuna roll and California were good, but not spectacular. They have a huge variety of rolls and a big selection of "oven baked" rolls. The presentation of the rolls was quite beautiful and added to the whole experience of eating there. I hate sushi restaurants that serve giant rolls that are impossible to eat in one bite and just fall apart all over the place. Every roll we had at Sushi Zen was a perfect bite size and very tightly rolled. The sushi chef is definitely a professional. The wait staff was very nice and even though we parked a table for two hours catching up, we didn't feel rushed. I would put this place up against any of the high end sushi joints in Ann Arbor.

It's nice that Brighton has a sushi place. But having dined here twice (once dine-in, once carry-out) I can say that Brighton does not have a "good" sushi place in Sushi Zen--and definitely doesn't have a Japanese restaurant there either. On my wife's and my first trip there, I ordered some sort of Korean-type dish; it was full of more vegetation than a typical garden, and had only a smattering of beef. The sushi was pretty decent, but nothing spectacular. My wife's tempura dinner was, again, passable. Our second trip (carry-out) was unplanned. I had a stomach bug, but had regained enough of an appetite by the evening to want soup. And what better soup than a good udon? My wife stopped by on her way home, and got each of us a tempura udon, and a tuna roll for me. First off: the tuna roll was excellent, and at $5, a pretty good bargain. I scarfed that down in no time. But turning to the udon, my wife and I were both met with horrible disappointment. Udon, as we know it (from quite a few establishments), tends to be a fairly simple soup--udon noodles, of course, plus scallions, maybe a fish cake, and little else. Sushi Zen's concept, though, would better be described as "cabbage soup, with udon noodles." I literally had to pause to consider whether I'd ordered incorrectly. I'd have some measure of forgiveness if the broth was good, but here too Sushi Zen falls flat. The broth had no traditional flavor whatsoever, and what taste it did have was colored (badly) by the abundance of that nasty cabbage. We both ate what we could (the tempura itself was fine), I drank some of the broth, but we both ended with half-full containers that ended up being tossed. So, with all of this said, and having only made two trips to Sushi Zen, why am I giving only two stars? It's simple, really. In this case, I have no choice but to compare Sushi Zen with other Japanese restaurants in the area (an area I concede to be fairly large, stretching from Novi to Ann Arbor to Howell). My "gold standard" is Happy Sushi; they strike the perfect balance, in my mind, of price and quality. In this case, Sushi Zen falls horribly short of any sort of mark. Their prices are far too high for the quality they're putting out, not just on their entrees but on their sushi as well. (While I found their tuna roll to be a good value, their other rolls are quite expensive, comparatively.) In general, they seem to be going for an upscale vibe, based on their prices and their ambiance, but they frankly don't have the food to back this up. If you're looking for good Japanese food in the Brighton area, I say, head down the street to Sagano, or travel a bit further to Blue Fin in Genoa Township. If it's strictly sushi you want, I'd head to either Blue Fin or to One World in Novi. But whatever you do, give Sushi Zen a miss. I know I will.

I like Sushi Zen. They were the first restaurant in Brighton to put Sushi in their name. That's how I know they had sushi. This place is usually packed, despite it being sandwiched between a dry cleaners and an auto parts store. The tables are kind of close together, so expect "plate snoops" from the next table to eye what you ordered.

No curb appeal, so hold your opinion and your appetite until you get to your seat. It was fun to transition from bland strip mall to stylish interior. There were non-Asians making sushi and rolls with beef, but the sushi was great and the service was fun if a little sassy (which I always encourage). When I take someone for sushi I want a feast. We tried half a dozen rolls and it was all good. There uniform/T-shirt is fun so I bought one of those also. I am glad I found this spot. Five stars for what it is: Sushi in a small Detroit suburb.

Wow.

Go! Go! Go!

Ate here for the first time on Friday will be back for sure. The rolls were amazing! Salad had a bit too much dressing for me but if u got it on the side I am sure it would be fine. Loved the atmosphere and our server was very attentive. Overall very positive experience for a first time sushi experience!

This place does have good sushi. We spent $200+ on our meal and tried all sorts of specialty rolls, and they were quite authentic, like the rolls we've had in Japan. But I really wish this place wasn't so expensive.

Excellent! 5 Stars! I only gave them 4 stars because they're closed for 2 hours a day, they don't even mention it on their website and their website is awful. They're menu's a mess. Other than that, they're Awesome!! My favorite place for Sushi! MSU is the Best!

This is probably my favorite sushi place in the state. The sushi is really good. The presentation is always fun. Things always taste fresh. The staff is friendly. As soon as you walk in the door they make you feel welcome. It is a really fun place. I've had sushi all over the country and I have no idea how this little place in Brighton does such a good job. I guess don't question it, just enjoy it.

Love this place! The sushi is wonderful and not only that they have great entree's if you're not into eating sushi. The price is middle of the road to a little high but it is worth every penny. Also if you are looking for a strong cocktail try a mai tai but definitely make sure you have a DD .

A nice place to go for dinner, at times it can get quite busy, and there's limited seating unfortunately. They offer a wide variety of sushi, rolls, and sashimi. The staff have always been quite nice, and the owners are very outgoing and nice. The one drawback is the carpeting in the restaurant, which has become quite stained and worn in the main area, it would do the restaurant justice to either replace it or go down to a nice concrete finish.

i don't get the deal with the 4 star rating. not only is one unable to order two pieces of sushi or sashimi as is the standard anywhere else you go in the US, but the pieces of tuna and octopus we had (on a friday!) were actually quite tough. the pieces were very big and that's always appreciated. rolls were decent but nothing great. attentive service but thats not what the rating is about. def never driving from ann arbor to here again. my group left so unsatisfied we actually hit up taco bell when we got back (i was with a few indian american buddies and apparently they LOVE themselves some taco bell). truth be told, i think sushi town next to the hardware store on packard in AA is better. and that place is def nothing great. i will say that downtown brighton seems to be a pretty cool spot with interesting restaurants/bars tho.

Sushi Zen deserves a gold medal in all categories! The sushi is the freshest I've ever had and the staff is very knowledgable about the different rolls. The chefs arrange the sushi on your plate in the most artistic and beautiful way and also includes edible sugar decorations. The inside is small but intimate and is always buzzing with sushi-goers.

Sushi Zen is a great find. It's fresh, has a great atmosphere inside and a liquor license. It offers some of the most creative rolls I've ever had. The crunch roll, spectacular roll and snowman are served warm and are spectacular. For something more simple, try the salmon and tuna shashimi or nigiri.

Recently tried Sushi Zen for the first time and I really liked it. Their menu was quite extensive and everything we tried was excellent. I had the Kiss of Fire and the TNT Roll both were excellent and pretty spicy which is something I always look for. My girlfriend of the Michigan roll and we both like that too. What I really liked about Sushi Zen is that many of their rolls don't even have fish in them, they have rolls with chicken teriyaki for example which is a huge plus since it means you can take friends there who don't really do seafood. I only recently got into sushi because of a similar place. I don't eat cooked seafood very much but because of a similar place I was able to try some off a friends order and now I'm quickly becoming addicted. Service was excellent. We waited about 20 minutes for a table at about 7 or 730 on a Wednesday night without a reservation. I would suggest making one before going as the place seems to do very brisk business (always a good thing when your menu is raw fish). Some of the hometown rolls are up to 20 dollars apiece but they have really affordable rolls as well if price is a concern.

I'm not a sushi person but I love sushi zen. Really nice atmosphere. I usually take my seat at the bar and watch them make the food.

Wow.

Delicious. I always worry when ordering sushi from a place I never have tried before but Sushi Zen did not disappoint. Everything was tidy and the sushi is right up my alley. Will buy again.

Ate here for the first time on Friday will be back for sure. The rolls were amazing! Salad had a bit too much dressing for me but if u got it on the side I am sure it would be fine. Loved the atmosphere and our server was very attentive. Overall very positive experience for a first time sushi experience!

This place does have good sushi. We spent $200+ on our meal and tried all sorts of specialty rolls, and they were quite authentic, like the rolls we've had in Japan. But I really wish this place wasn't so expensive.

Excellent! 5 Stars! I only gave them 4 stars because they're closed for 2 hours a day, they don't even mention it on their website and their website is awful. They're menu's a mess. Other than that, they're Awesome!! My favorite place for Sushi! MSU is the Best!
