This bakery knows how to deliver sweets that are rich and light and delicious, or dense and flavorful. They don't suffer from the common misstep of making everything overly sugar-y sweet. A friend of mine got her wedding cake here and had I been married in Michigan, I would have gladly done the same. Her experience was great (I went to the cake-tasting with her) and the cake was fantastic. I just wish they had later hours.

Oh, so good, and the people are so nice. Best cakes and pastries in the area. Highly recommend.

This is a paean to the Townsend Bakery. TB, I love you. Six years later people still talk about the lemon and raspberry wedding cake you made for me. TB, you made the BEST pecan pie I have ever had - sweet, but not cloying, with a buttery, flaky crust and lots of pecans. I always thought my pecan pie was the best, but I was wrong. I am happy that I discovered yours. The pumpkin roll with cream cheese filling I had the other day? Excellent, like everything else I have had from you. I have had only the sweets from the Townsend Bakery and have come to the conclusion that the TB has the best around. I haven't tried the savory offerings, but if they are anywhere near the quality of the sweets, they must be wonderful.

They have bumpy cake...an area classic that no trip home should be without. Nice to be able to get something not known where I live now.

Waned in memory from my childhood. Also, everything I'm looking for (croissants) seem to always be sold out before I get there (by 10am).

We found glass in the cake. Put small children in danger. Pictures included.

Their cake is to die for. We got our wedding cake there. We were tired of only having the option of buttercream that tasted like straight butter. We ended up getting chocolate cake, with chocolate mousse ( instead of buttercream ) and strawberries. Our second layer was french vanilla cake with raspberry mousse, and our top layer was their carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Everything was light, and so so moist. We froze our top layer for a year (as tradition says), and when we ate it, it was just as good and moist and delicious as on our wedding day. The appearance was just as we asked for, too. Oh, and the price was really reasonable, and cheaper than all of the other cake places we tried. Beat Zingerman's in flavor, moistness, and price.

I dropped in before work one morning to pick up birthday treats for work. The cupcakes looked amazing (and huge), so I bought a bunch. At $1.75 each, that's a steal! I tried the chocolate cupcake with chocolate frosting; this thing was the heaviest cupcake I have ever lifted. The cupcake itself was excellent, very chocolatey and moist, but the frosting tasted like it came from a can - not what I like. It was very thick and heavy. I eyed (but did not get a bite of) the bumpy cake cupcake: chocolate cupcake, cream, covered in ganache. The tasters said it was awesome, but I cannot confirm. Cost and look of cupcakes (and third party happiness): 5 Frosting (just the chocolate one): 3 So, overall, the cupcakes get a 4. I would definitely try again, since they were such a crowd pleaser.

First and foremost, the THB has been selling dee-licious fluffy cupcakes way, way before the cupcake bakery craze erupted across this country. Bar none, these are still the best cupcakes I can think of eating. The are enormous complete with a moist, light-almost airy-cake and a perfect portion of frosting-to-cake ratio on top. The coffee is good (could stand to be a little stronger), the prices are super reasonable and probably are still the same as the were in the late 90s. It smells perfectly comforting. The only drawback is that their hours are short. But, I am ever grateful that they are still around and knocking out yummy treats. Hooray for cupcakes!

I wish they were open on Mondays..we have to think harder about lunch when they are closed. Seriously best hidden lunch spot in Birmingha..the bakery is great but the soups, salads, and reubens are always perfect. The girls are super friendly especially when you consider that they have a non stop line from noon to one.

three words. chicken. pot. pie. creamy, soupy and sensational! This little bakery (part of the Townsend Hotel but separate entrance) is as classy as the hotel it shares its name with. My recommendations: obviously the chicken pot pie, the hydro bibb salad (the freshest greens, pine nuts, aged white cheddar cheese shavings, berries, and a peach raspberry vinaigrette), and the chocolate truffle cookie (think double fudge cookie and then add holy water). I would advise you to skip the quesadilla. It wasn't terrible, but something was "off" about it. Then again, who orders a quesadilla from a bakery? Marcie, who is there most days, is really nice and always puts up with fanatical ordering from all of our employees. My drawbacks are: They are closed on Mondays and all other days they are only open til 2p.m. Oh, and their ranch is eeehhh.. It's been about two weeks since I last had it- I think I may just have to pot pie it up for lunch tomorrow..

A consistently tasty stop in Birmingham! Sandwiches, salads and soups hit the spot. Good variety of offerings--but get there early if you have your heart on something--they do sell out of certain things. Dessert prices are a steal. Great pricing on breakfast pastries by the dozen--perfect for a morning meeting. Only thing that really bugs me is the styrofoam containers for sandwiches--such a waste and they do a lot of business. At least having an option to recycle them would ease my conscience.
