Hidden gem! Small little spot that offers a great selection of pastries. I usually try lots of different things every time I go back to a place as I get bored. However, I'm slightly addicted to the chocolate almond croissants. They are out of this world good, and I haven't tried anything else on the bakery side. As for the tarts and selections of mousse the lemon tart which is called something else and a chocolate hazelnut mousse are two that I suggest trying! The gentleman that works there is always so friendly and I am horrible with names, but I can always strike a conversation with him! Coffee is great as well... as I stated just a nice little hidden gem!

A great hidden bakery near Maple & Coolidge. It has a quaint feeling, and the outdoor seating is really nice. It's near a quiet residential area, so the traffic is not bad. I had the latte, while others in my party had the cappuccino & hot cocoa. After trying all three, I decided the latte was the best - fairly creamy and with pronounced espresso flavor. We also shared an extremely delicious chocolate eclair filled with chocolate ganache (favorite) & a refreshing fruit tarte. Will definitely be coming back here!

The macarons were great! the little patio out front is a good place to get some work done on a summer day. WiFi is free!

Very cute cafe in Birmingham with great study music and free parking and wifi. I'm not a big fan of their fromage sandwich. (BUT if you're into more of the bitter cheese flavors order it! It's the one for you!) Their latte is very rich and carefully prepared. Their macaroons are delectable. My favorite is the chocolate French macaroon. It literally falls apart in your mouth after you bite into it. The dessert is not too sweet and that is what I've always preferred. Come here if you want to experience what every macaroon should taste like!

The owner of this place used to own a similar and larger French patisserie on Hamilton Row that closed a few years ago. Like the previous place, it has an assortment of French sweets, breads, and of course espresso drinks. For a town that lacks many authentic French or European establishments, this is pretty good. I'd say it's the closest you'd get to France in this area. I usually get some type of sweets. Also, if I still need a coffee, I get an espresso. They have nice French word flash cards to test your French vocabulary! Out front, they have a few seats that you can sit out and enjoy your cafe, but it's right on the parking lot. Inside they have about 7 smaller tables. In all, it's a nice non-pretentious place that you can get your Francophile fix! Enjoy.

Picked up a few pastries one Saturday afternoon and was pleasantly surprised. Everything I tried was really tasty. I didn't exactly feel like I was back on the streets of Paris, but I didn't feel like I'd just hit up the average corner bakery either. I'll be back for sure.

Beautiful assortment of deserts and baked goods. I loved the macaroons. I am going to come back to eat in and get some computer work done. I'll have to come earlier because coming in at noon I noticed a lot of goodies were gone.

You must buy.... Almond croissant! The vanilla macaroons and the vanilla eclair! You will not regret it, nice small quaint spot to work on the laptop!

Have been here several times. Never got disappointed. The pastries, baguette and coffee are a great and the price is reasonable. They have some space if you wanna take your laptop and work here.

This is the perfect Corner bake shop that takes you to straight to Paris! Should you choose to dine in, there are 5 or so small tables, (plus a patio when weather permits), French bistro music playing, and kind service offered (so better than going to Paris!) Fresh salads or sandwiches made to order with their fresh baked breads, Serving Great Lakes Coffee co, a local product, real macaroons (only $1/ea!) Beautiful pastries, and croissant pan chocolate warm is must!

Just the smell alone deserve a 5 star. Beautiful little place were the owner speaks French. Just in a small plaza off Eaton st. Keep your eyes peeled to spot it. Love the fact of hearing most customers speaking French. If in Birmingham you must stop.

I love this little coffee shop. They make the best latte I've had around Birmingham so far and the macaroons are just right. They have free wifi and a nice ambience. I'd bring a computer and hang out here for a little while.

Just wanted to add my two cents. This is a comfortable place to hang and talk with friends or stay by yourself. Yes it is small but they add tables outside for the summer. The pastries, desserts and cakes are amazing. Chocolate croquent is my favorite.

I was dragged to Canelle by a friend who is, to put it mildly, a perfectionist about his coffee. I was not disappointed. And it's not just exceptional coffee- Canelle also has delicious, authentic, French pastries, including many you don't often see- where else can you find freshly made macarons with your late? Of course they also have croissants, both plain and filled with chocolate, cheese, ham, and other fillings. This is a great place to spend a lazy morning, reading your paper, sipping your coffee, and enjoying exquisite baked treats.

Stopped in for a treat for later in the evening. We got a triple chocolate torte to share. It was good but we were kind of surprised that it had an orange taste to it. We were not expecting that in a "triple chocolate" torte. But for $3.50 it was worth it, you'd pay double that at the grocery store bakery for poor quality.

Absolutely the best french patisserie. I'm nothing short of obsessed, and can't leave without ordering two too many of everything.

Really love this place, I've been coming for quite awhile and just recently tried one of their sandwiches. The ham and butter was deliciously warm and the baguette it was on was perfectly crunchy. The almond chocolate croissants are my favorite and the assorted pastries available always look good. I also love the sparkling lemonades that they have, everything is delicious!

Ah, finally a cappuccino that is a wonderful combination of froth and expresso! I will be back. I ordered a cherry pastry and brought home a apple pastry puff for my husband. We both loved our baked good. All of the selections were so beautiful that I had difficulty making a choice. The server was a darling woman who was sensitive to my companion who had to sort through change to pay her bill. Kudos for her sensitivity. There is a small area to sit and several parties were accessing their computers as they enjoyed their coffee and sweets in the mid afternoon. Look in the corner of the lot to find this destination!

Tried it today. Based on what I had, which is pain au chocolat (my measuring stick for French pastry), I'm basically going to say that this place is a giant swing-and-a-miss, the kind of swing-and-a-miss that elicits boos from an impatient crowd wanting a half-hearted attempt. It's certainly cute enough. It's got a nice little neighborhood café vibe, it offers several high-endish coffee-type drinks for those who are into those kinds of silly beverages, and they have some honestly bad French pastry. Pain au chocolat that, were it your first foray into the pastry, would make you wonder what all the hubbub about French pastry is about. It's dense (not airy), it uses quite lousy chocolate and the ratio is off as well, and it's more expensive than that at Le Petit Prince. So: it's far, *far* worse than LPP, and it's more expensive. Not much more ($2 at Cannelle, $1.75 at LPP), but it's pricier for a far inferior product. True, you can sit down here and enjoy it at a table indoors, whereas you categorically cannot at LPP...but to me, the bottom line is the product, and this thing is 3 letter grades below the pain au chocolat available at LPP. If LPP is an "A", this place gets a "D". Edible, yes, but completely unsatisfying. I will say that you can taste the butter, yes, but that's about the only thing redemptive about it. Looking at their baguettes, I can see, without even trying and buying mind you, *exactly* what gan911 was saying. Normally I'd try one of them, but they don't look good enough for the $3 it'd be (and yes: again, that's more than at LPP by about $.20). They look *wrong*. Again, they'd be edible, but they wouldn't be the correct French baguette that I would want, so I'm pretty unimpressed. Won't be back, no matter how "cute" the place is. With LPP only a couple miles away and Give Thanks Bakery in Rochester both able to pull off more-than-just-respectable versions of said products (Give Thanks is significantly more expensive, but they get things right!), there's no need to, and I don't have room in my life for a fourth-rate "French" bakery. If you're going to simply put some not-so-good chocolate in croissant dough and call it "pain au chocolat", you've not just missed the mark...you didn't have the correct target to begin with.

Five stars many delights! The Coffee is of the "Great Lakes" variety. If you haven't had the brand try it here. You are in for surprise as soon as you enter the doorway. Tarts, bread sandwiches etc. great service, atmosphere. I was hesitant to write this review I really just want to keep this place all to myself.

  • Jina L.

I saw so many 5/5 reviews and gave it a try. I sat in for about an hour, eating baguette sandwich, drinking coffee followed by 4 desert assortments. AWSOME!!! Everything I had was good. I cannot say more. I almost did not want to tell anyone about this place and keep it to myself.. I was there around 2PM and customers never stopped coming in.. I truly believe if you don't try out now, you might be in a line next time you visit!

I can hardly believe there are only 14 reviews for this place. It's definitely a well kept secret that you need to check out. A perfectly quaint pastry shoppe that hit so many marks for me that I can hardly wait to return. The baguette sandwiches are sensational and craveworthy....ham, gruyere and tomato pressed between two very crusty but tender baguette halves. Ridiculously tasty and a little pricey at $9 for a whole sandwich but so worth it. Their French Macaron is legit and well priced. The chocolate almond croissant was ethereal. The raspberry whipped cream éclair, not as sweet as expected, but ornate and pretty wonderful. A blackberry custard tart was light and delicate while their lunch pastry was filled with a mix of leek, feta and basil all wrapped in croissant dough, sprinkled with sesame seeds and finished with a very subtle hint of sweetness...pretty fantastic. Come in and order a coffee from the barista and sit a spell enjoying the day's paper over a pastry while you wait for your sandwich and I promise you that it'll put a smile on your face.

Really yummy beautiful macaroons. Great espresso. Only drawback is how small the place is and it's not that easy to find. It's in the back corner of a small shopping center. Cashier was very nice. I went with my sisters and my brother in law, who's a native of Belgium and expert on French pastries. He's a big fan of macaroons and gave them a two thumbs up. They have all sorts of flavors-- blueberry, pistachio, chocolate, strawberry. You'll just have to come check it out for yourself! If you're in the neighborhood, definitely drop by for the authentic French coffee experience and Parisian atmosphere.

I finally found a little slice of what I had in the south of France! The chocolate croissant was chewy and flaky, just like I remember, the chocolate hazelnut slice I had was amazing, and the macarons were simply divine. I'm so glad that Siri recommended it to me when I asked for good coffee. Maybe next time i'll actually try the coffee, because i'm sure I'll be going back

Doesn't get much better than this bakery. Everything I've had is delicious. Not one bad thing to say.

Love this place! I have a definite weakness for good bakery and am I ever glad Cannelle opened up on the commute home. We've had the vanilla, mocha and berry eclaires, yum, several of the different tortes, and our favorite the oddly named, oddly shaped but extremely delicious English Cake Balls. Prices are what you'd expect to pay for top quality bakery. Haven't tried anything savory other than a savory croissant which was quite good, but I have my eye on some of the baguette sandwiches on the menu. They also have seasonal items, like the buche de noel & now king cakes. Three bonus points for a seating area in case you can't wait to dive in (hard to resist, seeing that box sitting there on the passenger seat), good music selection & friendly service, and good hours - late enough for an emergency run for some chocolate ganache!

    (5)
  • Kay C.

Croissant is the staple of every French bakery. Unfortunately, Cannelle's croissant were dry, stale and tasteless. I am going to call it an off day for the baker because I know they can do better. Its predecessor Cannella's had amazing croissant and pastries. The only saving grace and thus a 3 star rating, were the black currant eclair, which were beyond devine. Oh and pretty much anyone that wants a real macaron should run to this place.

  • Anthony Z.

A little slice of Europe in our back yard, the pastries are great but the croissants and baguettes are the best in Birmingham. The panini's are fabulous... Small quaint and sweet... Sit outside on a Saturday or Sunday morning and you'll feel like your sitting in Europe somewhere.

  • B S.

The only reason I did not want to give this place 5 star is because I want this place to be my SECRET. I adore adore this little hideaway place. The coffee is dangerously divine, and the croissants, pastries and macaroons .... well you have landed in Europe. Michiganders it does not get any better than this. OK so I enjoy how small and quaint this place is. Lets all just keep it a secret together.

I saw couple of positive reviews so I am curious how good it is. It is a really small bakery located on the back of Jet's Pizza and is not easy to find during the Eton Street road construction. But it is worthy of giving it a try! Their pastry has crafty, delicate appearance and gorgeous taste. I recommend all of their chocolate cakes and macarons. Perfect taste, crispy crusts, and smooth chocolate mousse.

Great atmosphere, nice and quiet, helpful staff, delicious food! I've been here twice now and I've had the crunchy caramel chocolate tart, which was amazing. The crust on the tarts is perfect. I've also had the the raspberry and strawberry cakes which were very good. The tea they serve is harney and sons, which is a great brand and comes in a variety of types. The building itself is nice and has an outdoor area with plenty of shade. Overall, I came for the tasty pastries and stayed for the quality experience.

Fantastic coffee, the best English breakfast tea I have ever had, and a personable and friendly staff. I've never had a macaroon, and now I'm hooked. Love it here!

Best French bakery in metro Detroit. I've been here many times for their macarons, their baguettes, their tartes aux fruits and every time I come in I find something new to get hooked on.

What an adorable place! It is a very unassuming place from the outside, but once you step inside it feel like you are transported straight to France. (I had visions of Audrey Hepburn's Sabrina run through my head as I peered at the dessert case). They have a lovely selection of reasonably priced pastries, desserts, breads, and savory items to satisfy your carbohydrate craving. There is also a decent coffee, espresso drink, juices/water selection. It seems like a great place to read the Sunday paper or curl up with a good book for a few hours. I will be going back in the near future. Merci Cannelle Patisserie for opening up near me.

I was surprised to see such high reviews. I wonder if people have actually had real French pastries before. I am, however, only reviewing the croissants since we've ordered a variety from them 3 times. I went back twice hoping for tastier, flakier, chewier croissants but was disappointed every time. They do not taste fresh and are bland with no real flavor. Ive tried most of the flavors and wish so much to love this place but unfortunately the pastries are nothing to write home about. Maybe the other desserts are better. I gave it 3 stars because the decor was quaint and the service is always pleasant. I hope that they work on the quality and taste, The Detroit area needs more specialized bakeries like this place. I'm tired of all the cupcake shops.

The closest you will come to authentic French patisseries. Very friendly staff. Quiet yet convenient location. I'm already addicted. Bless you Cannelle!!!

A little slice of Europe in our back yard, the pastries are great but the croissants and baguettes are the best in Birmingham. The panini's are fabulous... Small quaint and sweet... Sit outside on a Saturday or Sunday morning and you'll feel like your sitting in Europe somewhere.

A hidden gem of Birmingham. Serves real deal French pastries and everything is fresh. Also is supplied by the local Great Lakes Coffee company. P.S. You MUST try the apple stuffed croissant!

This place is great! Wouldn't have known it existed because of the semi-hidden location, but I'm glad we found it on Yelp! Employees were polite, the baked goods were delicious and reasonably priced, and the coffee hit the spot. I definitely recommend this quaint French pastry shop.
