Their Chicken Korma is amazing! My co-workers and I order from here a few times a week. Everything is delicious and the staff is super friendly!

This will be our first and last time visiting Mazza. We were pretty excited to try the best (and only) Indian food in Berkley, based on Yelp & Trip Advisor reviews. We left extremely disappointed and unsatisfied with numerous aspects of our visit. What was really upsetting was the service or lack there of...After taking our order and receiving our soup almost immediately, there was virtually no contact/communication between us and the servers. We ordered appetizers, coffees and obviously a main course. The appetizers never came (but we are pretty sure was given to another table). The coffee came after an hour of waiting and me requesting it from both servers and one of the kitchen workers repeatedly...Our food was actually delivered to another table. After the couple picked the lids up and inspected the food they informed the kitchen worker (who was delivering food to dining room) that it was not their meal. No problem! Let's take it to another table, have them look at it and then say it's not what they ordered before getting to us... Needless to say, after waiting an hour for our meal and seeing this transpire it was pretty upsetting. Our original server appeared halfway through our meal with the coffee I had ordered 60 mins ago and ask if I had ordered the coffee...it shouldn't be to difficult to guess what I'm thinking. My wife mentions that we also ordered appetizers that never showed up and the server never bats an eye and simply states she can grab some for us to go. We kind of think, ok they screwed up at least they'll comp the appetizer, guess again... While the service may have been horrible the food was just about average. My wife loves Indian food and probably would have given it a 2.5-3 if the service and servers weren't so bad. Edit - The ownership has personally reached out and apologized for our experience. I definitely appreciate this and they are going to work on ensuring future customers do not have similar experiences to our own. If we ever end up returning, we will be willing to update our rating if things have changed for the better.

Best Indian food I've had in the area, and there is not many options. All the more reason to support Mazza! Come with friends and share a feast! Get some naan, you won't regret it.

Yelp has this one right on, 3 1/2 stars, Mazza is a just above decent Indian food, you won't get the best or most creative dish, but they won't give you crap, if your into Indian you won't go wrong with Mazza.

Solid Indian place in an area that doesn't have many alternatives. Nice dining room, nice people working there, fairly quick for take-out. In Troy you've got the usual suspects (my favorite of which is Royal), in Farmington places like Namaste, on the west side there's Indian Flavors and Indo-Fusion, in the Sterling/Madison Heights area you've got Phulkari and Megha's Athidhi, but in this area around Woodward, the only place I'd really choose over it would be Touch of India in Birmingham. And that's quite a bit up the road, with annoying parking options. So, all around it's very solid for the area. Actually, certain things (like the malai kofta) are actually better than the "top" places in the metro area. And there are a number of things that you won't find elsewhere (relatively rare in the Indian dining arena, where menus at different establishments are often just facsimiles of each other). I'll concede that the consistency needs to improve a bit. On some days, the various curries we'll order will be just as we'd hope, on other's they'll be thin, runny and one-note. First impressions make a big difference, and if we weren't already relatively loyal customers some of the product we've received would've turned us off. But generally it's a reliable place for the basics. There's also very convenient parking right behind the building, for free. Overall, a solid choice for take-out (and the occasional dine-in).

Went for lunch. Not impressed by the overall experience. Food was okay-to-decent Indian. Service terrible. Slow and not attentive. There is better Indian food and much better service not too far away.

No bull: this is probably some of the best Indian food, specifically, North Indian, outside of NJ. Forget Moti Mahal in Royal Oak. Forget anything in Troy/Farmington. This is it.

Each Indian restaurant has a signature via it's spices. Mazza is true to that statement. My disappointment lies in the tough lamb served in my lamb saag. One of the best things about good Indian food is that the meat is slow cooked and is tender within the sauce. This was not the case with my take out order last night. My husband had Lamb Korma and his lamb was nicely cooked, tender and served in a yogurt sauce with plumb raisins that added an extra touch of sweetness when encountered. We ordered naan and only received one piece which is very odd. We were unable to order Thali style so instead ordered soup and a side of vegetables. The soup and vegetables were not well seasoned so I didn't experience the delight of the complex flavors I have come to expect from my Indian dining experiences. All in all a disappointment so I will return to tried and true Indian restaurants that have satisfied me in the past.

I was highly disappointed when this locale closed Passage to India whose food I loved. But Mezza was a solid replacement. A bit pricey but everything Ive eaten here has been very good. Im partial to their Korma, tikka masala, and the tandoori. If you eat in, nice dishes they serve the food in. I dont get too caught up in service but everyone has been nice when Ive gone here. Not sure why more dont go here. Meat samosas and all their samosas are highly recommended - nice wrap and quality fillings. Superb mango pickle. Now I'm starting to get hungry for some...

The food was outstanding. We had chicken tandoori and shrimp Marsala. The lentil soup was excellent. The server was very friendly and attentive. If you're looking for Indian food in Metro Detroit this should be at the top of your list!

I can't even properly express how amazing my meal at Mazza just was. My samosas were beautifully crisp on the outside and perfectly seasoned on the inside. I honestly could have eaten a whole meal of them. I also ordered the fish curry which had a wonderfully complex flavor and somehow the fish just melted in my mouth. The only thing that stopped me from finishing my whole meal was the shred of self-control I had left. It did take a bit of time to get the food, but honestly, everything there had to have been cooked from scratch and it was totally worth it. I'm always suspicious of places that bring out the food within 15 minutes of you ordering, so I would take this place any day. We were still out within an hour and a half. Now to resist eating my leftovers until tomorrow...

Came here for date night with my husband after seeing the restaurant on a friend's Instagram, and this place did not disappoint at all! Right upon entering we were hit with an incredible mouth watering aroma. All of the staff is super friendly and welcoming, and all the wall murals were beautiful! The food was better than what I had expected, extremely flavorful and appealing to the eyes. Definitely recommend going here again and they have a lunch buffet that's next on my list to check out!

Went for the Buffet lunch. Food was ok, but had been sitting too long and was not very warm. Took a long time to get water as the waiter was busy gabbing. The sign said $8.99 and we were charged $21.75 for two with only water to drink.

Delicious!! We have been addicted since our first time getting carry out! They recently added to the menu also & everything is good.

Solid Indian place Nice dining room--everything I have eaten here has been good. I like their Chicken and Lamb Korma, Chicken and Lamb Curry , and the Tandoori. Guests in our party liked the vegetarian birani Samosas are recommended The rice that comes standard is good and tender. Good Nan, For $3 more you can order your meal Thali style and get 5-6 small cups of other things like Dal soup, Chutney, vegetable curry and desert. I have read mixed comments about service - I have never had a problem everyone has been nice and laid back but efficient. Good parking in back. Only disappointment was this last time the chicken in my Chicken Korma was not trimmed well - fatty and gristly pieces

We stopped for lunch and had a great meal. I agree that for the quantity of food we received the price was a little high, but the quality was there. I ordered chicken and spinach which was made with fresh spinach as far as cold tell. We paid $1.50 for a SINGLE piece of naan. The food was good. I would go back, but wish I knew of a more inexpensive option nearby.

I've been going here for many years, back when it was Passage to India. I can't explain why it doesn't get better ratings, I have always found the Indian fare to be honest, quality dishes from friendly people. Perhaps it is inconsistent and I just get lucky, but I am very particular about my Indian and this place has always made me very happy.

I'm an Indian food addict, lately. I can't enough of naan, samosas, or my very dear channa masala. And Mazza gave me superb renditions of all of these. BF had been talking up The Berkley Front for awhile now. Such a good beer list, blah blah blah... Ok, prove it. Let's head to TBF. But, let's get some chow first. Tired of our usual table at Amici's, I suggest something different. Note: I had been craving samosas that entire day, so I had ulterior motives with respect to my dinner suggestion. So we pack up the car with bestie and boy and travel our 3 minute commute to Berkley, yet when we walked through the door of Mazza, it was more like the few thousand mile trip to Mumbai. This Indian food is very authentic (trust me, I'm Armenian and German). The naan itself is a reason to hit this place up... fluffy and puffy and warm and delicious. The samosas were awesome, and our entrees (channa masala, lamb and chicken curry) were divine. It's a naan issue.... head to Mazza.

We wanted to recognize the Diwali holiday for our Hindu physician in our office so we decided to grab some lunch from Mazza. My coworkers aren't as adventurous when it comes to trying new foods, so this was going to be an experience for everyone. We tried a host of things, muttar paneer, butter chicken, chicken biryani, vegetable masala, aloo samosa, mazza samosa, and garlic naan..... Let me just say, we were ALL in a haze of Indian food coma when we were done eating. The food was very good! Newcomers to Indian cuisine tried everything and they really enjoyed it, and our Doctor said she liked it too. She even brought a ton of leftovers home for her family......that's a good sign...right!* :-D. I mentioned leftovers, because all if our portions were large, enough for seconds, and thirds! The service I received while picking up our lunch was great, food done on time, no mistakes, he even threw in extra naan for us to share. I'm going back for sure!

This was my first indian restaurant cuisine apart from having my friends homemade indian/desi butter chicken. Mazza was amazing. Its cleanliness astounded me and the food was delicious. I ordered there butter chicken and it was sooo tasty. Also their naan bread is the best I've ever had. If you get the chance to see how they make it, its one of the coolest ways of making bread. I personally cant handle spicy food, but the spiciness of the dish was perfect and the taste of the multitude of spices was flavorful. I would totally come back here and recommend this place to all.

I have had better. I thought the Chana Masala was good and the Lamb in the biryani was excellent. But there were some problems: Lamb Biryani should be served with a yogurt sauce and I was not given any. Also the Palak Paneer was extremely salty and not at all creamy. Naan was just alright. All in all I was not impressed. Still in search of a favorite Indian restaurant but this one is off my list.

Mazza has a nice location in downtown berkley and a nice set up for a small, 45ish seat dining area. The service was great, except when I never got the sides I ordered. I got Lamb Pall a spicy lamb dish and my Gf got Butter chicken, also had chicken Tika ap and Muligatawny soup. Nothing was bad, but everything seemed a little bland, especially for the usually bold Indian. My lamb dish didn't have the veggies in it it said, or if it did they were cooked to nothingness. It was perfectly spicy, which I like, but again a weird bland spicy. The globjobon was a tasty dessert. If I was back in berkley, fiending for Indian (not likely), I'd go back. But There's better flavor closer to me. B

Delicious. Try your food "thali style". It's a delicious, fun, beautiful and adventurous way to enjoy an entree of your choice.

This place was formerly Passage to India and the service and food was just as great. One time my husband & I went and didn't realize they were under construction, but we had already entered the building to find that out. As we were about to leave the owner came out and apologized for not being able to service us at the moment. He was so gracious that he took us on a little tour of what was going to be the new indian restaurant. They did a complete 360 degree turnaround on the construction. The front of the building is now open and you can sit and watch people walk by. Before there were no windows and it was a bit dark inside. Service: still impeccable and accommodating. Food: you'll find your typical entrees here, but the foods always served hot. I always get the indian version of rice pudding. The naan bread is pretty large and serves two people. I can easily eat the whole thing by myself, but lets face it I don't want to be a part of MI obesity stats for over indulging in anything.

I have enjoyed Mazza every time I've eaten there or taken out food. Their food is fresh. Fried things (like Samosas) are not overly oily and the oil doesn't taste old or saturated with too many flavors that obscure the food. They have a wonderful selection of foods on their menu. I can always find something. I usually order vegetarian. I like the selection of dishes they offer in that sub-menu. I also like the peace and quiet of the room. There is something very relaxing about sitting in that space, with light coming in from the front windows, pleasant colors, and Indian art on the walls that is, itself, quiet and understated, yet very atmospheric. I look forward to my next meal there!

Tasting Indian cuisine has become a hobby for my family. We have tried restaurants in London, Paris, Zurich and Rochester (Michigan)... Yet - NOTHING comes close to what Mazza has to offer in cosy Berkley, MI. The owner is ofter there and will have a pleasant conversation with the customers. The cook is passionate about the food and will adjust it to your taste. The staff without exception is courteous, polite, careful and at your service - upscale at a regular price. Clean, colorful, ethnic - the atmosphere conditions you for the greatness to come with the quiet music on the background. And last but not least - the food is beyond delicious - it is addictive. As already mentioned - never tried Chicken Tikka Masala as delicious as Mazza's. Chicken Bhuna and Chicken Dansak are also tasty and flavorful. (I personally chose Pal and Vindaloo every once in a while to taste the 'fiery' native spices, but only recommend those to true piquant food lovers!) The Naan bread is out of this world! The bread is delicious even after reheated at home. ... and Papadam... one could enjoy its crunchiness with a few delicious, sweet or spicy sauces forever... Before you begin your meal - remember to leave room for desert. The rice pudding and 'gulab jamun' at Mazza are a great finish. (Top secret: Quietly ask for the Masala tea - the excellent staff will prepare it custom to you even though it has not made an appearance on the menu as of this writing!! You've never tried anything like this before!!!) Enjoy!

Very good flavors, quality and service. Be sure to note the spiciness of your order. The level of spice can greatly vary between dishes. **Carry out 6+ times**

This was my second time at this joint (first visit was 1.5 yrs ago when it first opened) and I felt compelled to get on here and write a review, because the food has gotten substaintially better. My first visit, like other reviewers from early on, I felt the food lack any real rich flavor, it was like watered down Indian food. However, on my second visit back last night, I was pleasantly surprised by the experience. Samosa sampler plate was solid. Butter chicken and Mali Kafta were both very good with very RICH flavor. Way better than before.... I would send people here looking for a decent Indian place in Royal Oak/Berkley area without having to drive 20 + minutes up to Northern Oakland Co to get to the other good Indian places.

I used to be a big fan of Passage to India, but stopped going because it went downhill, so I was excited to see a new Indian restaurant in its place. Tried it last night and it was only OK. My Chicken Korma was a little dry and the sauce hohum. My dining companion tried the Shrimp Sag and said it was very good. Don't know if I'll return.

Food is tasty--have been several times and tried a few things before I've narrowed it down to a few favorites. If you prefer your food spicy, ask them to add some extra or give it to you on the side. Would be nice to have naan included given the price. Service is consistently good. If you want your bill promptly, ask for it when they clear the plates--they're not trying to rush you out of there. Delighted the owner has made the restaurant front so inviting--a welcome change from the previous building. Glad Mazza is part of Berkley's offerings!

For once, I traveled Berkley past Clark's Ice Cream. Finally, I was going to cash in on my tattered Entertainment book coupon. I expected the somewhat-famed, fortress-like Passage to India. Instead, I got Mazza Indian Cuisine. All storefront windows and contemporary signage, the facade inspired optimism. Peeking in, I saw ambient lighting and a narrow, updated dining room. I let any last hints of disappointment and concern comfortably subside. Although I opened the menu to find pricier offerings than the digs let on, I was still game. We decided on lamb samosas, mutter paneer and chicken tandoori, all control dishes in a new Indian joint experiment. Only the first of these three were passable. Indian cuisine, offering arguably the most broad and complex palette of spices with which to paint a culinary picture, has no excuse for being bland. These selections left me with a distracting feeling of regret for parting with my hard-earned cash, which impaired my experience too much. Service here is fantastically pleasant. It's obvious from the crumber that one of my three servers used to remove debris from my table that they are hinting at white tablecloth hospitality. I sense that they are down-to-earth, well-meaning and good-hearted people, never hesitating a smile and emanating a professional brand of warmth. Despite scoring big with these qualities I often find important but elusive, they forgot several items, including our check for a good 15-20 minutes after they cleared our table. We were only one of three other seated parties. I wouldn't completely rule Mazza out for a second try, but I'm in no hurry.

This place is okay, I've been a couple times. The staff is nice and friendly. The food is kind of bland. Indian food is not supposed to be bland. I thought the first time maybe I just ordered the wrong thing but I've tried a few things and I'm just not that impressed. It's okay in a pinch since I live across the street, but not my first choice.

Two friends and I were excited to come here for dinner just after it opened. We came in on a friday night and there were 3 other tables seated in the restaurant. I ordered the coconut soup which tasted nothing more than coconut milk added to lukewarm water with coconut sprinkles from a bag in it. My friend ordered the mulligatawny soup which was just ok. For an entree I ordered chicken tikka masala which should be a creamy based chicken dish.....absolutely no cream whatsoever. Just over done tough chicken chunks in a bland tomato type sauce. It was like pulling teeth just to get a glass of water as the waitstaff rather would hang out at the door talking to each other than taking care of the customers. Upon exiting, (i had to take my bill up to the congregation at the door as no one came to my table to pick the check up) the manager asked if everything was ok and I said absolutely not and explained why. Not an apology or anything from him. I told him i would never come back and i will tell my friends to do the same. I hope they get their act together as a fantastic indian restaurant in Berkley would be a wonderful thing.

The Chicken Pall Curry is absolutely fantastic! I've never thought Indian food was all that spicy, but this curry is easily the hottest thing I've ever eaten. If you love spicy food, you'll enjoy this conflagrant concoction.

The food is fresh, the flavors are decent, and everything is authentic to North Indian home cooking! For the lunch buffet, they brought us fresh tandoori chicken, and it...was...awesome. The dal was epic...yellow lentils, ginger, mustard seed, and cilantro intermarry, creating a flavor explosion in my mouth hole. I could live on this dal and this dal alone. All of the the other dishes were tasty, and reminded the bf of food his mom makes.

My husband and I just walked out. We entered Mazza and we're told to seat ourselves which we did. Staff immediately brought over menus and water. Then nothing. For TEN MINUTES! The place was not busy and only one person was waiting for a carryout. Staff even sat another table and provided them with water AND brought take-home boxes to another table still without acknowledging us! As we were leaving without ordering ANYTHING the hostess proceeded to tell us goodbye like we had been there for a complete meal! NEVER AGAIN! First impressions are everything and Mazza blew theirs!

The food is so great! If the restaurant is crowded you might have a little wait for your order to come out. It's worth the wait to have each meal made to order! Solid Indian cuisine. The spice is always hot and I never leave without bringing food home, because potion size is so large.. Order your meal thali style! Great vegetarian options as well as meat choices.

This isn't the best Indian I've ever had, but it's still pretty good. We ordered 2 curries an 2 garlic naans. The naan is huge... 1 naan at mazza is basically equal to 2 naans everywhere else. The service is slow and the curry is a little more runny than I would have preferred but overall it was good. I wish it was a bit more spicy and I typically light things more on the mild side than a medium.

I had not been here since it was Passage to India. I like the updated décor. We went for lunch and were pleasantly surprised as I am a super snob when it comes to ethnic food, especially Indian. The butter chicken was fabulous. Hubby got the Lamb Vindaloo. The lamb was tender and perfectly cooked. The only downfall was it was SOOO hot we could barely eat it. His eyes were watering. I wish we had been given a choice on the level of spice. I know Vindaloo is normally very spicy but this was off the charts. I have never had it quite so hot. The Naan was just ok. I have had better. The rice that comes standard is FANTASTIC and perfectly seasoned. Seeing green cardamom pods made my day. The Palak Paneer was just ok to me, but my husband really liked it. The service was attentive but the food took forever(30 mins from order time to table). I was able to overlook that though as it was super fresh and nice and hot. Good job overall.

We were too lazy to drive to Ashoka in Troy so we decided to try Mazza. The atmosphere was a little boring but I never let that stop me from enjoying delicious food. We liked the menu choices and decided on Mixed Appetizers, Lamb Korma and Mutter Paneer. Appetizers were pretty tasty especially the samosa. The plate was very beautifully prepared. The sauces were added with special flair. However, there wasn't enough sauce for the very generous number of appetizers. When the entrees arrived, they looked remarkably similar. The mutter paneer was very brown and heavy on the cinnamon. The lamb korma was entirely forgettable but better than the mutter paneer. The worst thing I can tell you is that we took our leftovers home but decided not eat them . . . just not worth the calories.

This place has such good vibes. My fiancé and I visited Mazza for the first time yesterday and both felt warmth and sincerity from the staff, the atmosphere and of course in the food. You can seriously feel the love in the design of the restaurant. The walls and art were done in the mid 80's and are unique and special. The owners' late father built much of what is still there and the artwork was made just for the restaurant. As for the food? The food is very delicious. The samosa sampler was excellent although the potato ones and chicken ones happened to be our favorites out of the four flavors. The butter chicken I had was perfectly prepared. Keep in mind this is a common dish among all of India but since different regions make dishes differently you will find chicken breast used in this instead of thigh (a big plus in my book since you are not left with that greasiness coating your stomach) but totally wowwed our tastebuds. My fiancé ordered the specialty lamb dish and we were both thoroughly impressed with this dish too. Seasoned so well even the tomatoes were just rediculously savory. There is a great hint of ginger and a pop of clove. Just be sure that you watch for the cloves if you are not a fan of munching on them since they do not take them out prior to serving. We got garlic naan with the entreés and were impressed with the quality and homestyle taste and texture. I hope you give this place a shot and see how great it is. The service was awesome because the server didn't visit our table every two minutes and actually allowed us time to enjoy the moment without interruption. This goes along with the rest of the soothing, relaxed feel Mazza achieves.

Went here last night based on the Yelp reviews. We were looking for a good Indian restaurant not too far from Ferndale. Troy seemed too much of a hike so we went here. And it was just okay. Let me preface this by saying that I grew up going to Indian restaurants on Devon Avenue in Chicago and more recently I was in school in Ann Arbor so my expectations for Indian restaurants are high. This place did not quite meet my standards with the exception of the Naan and the soup. We had the Mullagatawny soup and vegetable samosas to start. The soup was delicious with lots of flavor. The samosas were also flavorful but very greasy. Inside them was not the usual spicy potato and pea combination but a lighter filling of cabbage and potatoes, which was quite tasty. I would have loved these except for the grease. The chutney was quite good. We then shared a Chicken Tikka Masala, which came with rice, and Naan. The naan was to die for good. Lots of big air bubbles surrounded by soft goodness. The rice was very undercooked. And the masala was not as creamy as in other places though it had nice flavor. The service was impecable. Maybe they filled our water glasses too much. We might go back but first we will try the new place in Royal Oak and we will make a trip to Troy.

Really was hoping this place would be good/great as they've added a nice, new storefront to the 12 Mile corridor in Berkley. Unfortunately, it was just ok. Service was the main problem tonight. There were two other tables (of two) seated when we arrived yet you would think the restaurant was packed due to the lack of attention to us. There was only one waiter, but we figured he should be able to at least bring us menus within the first ten minutes we were seated. Maybe they want you to lounge around first? A couple more waiters finally arrived for their shift at 6 pm and the level of attention greatly improved after that. However, the service was still discombobulated. As for the food (which if fantastic allows you to look past the service), it was nothing to get overly excited about. I'm not an Indian food expert, but two of my co-diners eat Indian food frequently. They both felt the food was bland - they ordered Muttar Paneer and Chana Masala - both mild. However, they did say it was some of the best Naan (made fresh to order) they had ever had. Vegetable samosas were also decent. If you live in Berkley and want Indian food, then go for it. It isn't bad...

First time at Mazza and enjoyed the clean, well kept restaurant. The samosa''s were VERY good as were the two sauces served with them; presentation was the most creative I have seen in an Indian restaurant and warrant a trip back just for those! We tried three separate dishes and found them just ok, not stellar but just ok. Desert was very good. Service was GREAT and our server was especially nice and efficient. Overall we had an enjoyable dinner and would return if in the area.

My husband and I just had a delicious dinner at Mazza. What a modern and bright and welcoming atmosphere. Having been a resident of Berkley- this new place fills a void for local dining options. For anyone who may not have tried Indian food-or worry that it'd be too spicy- trust me, there are options at Mazza for you. Chicken Tikka Masala is as fun to say as it is to eat (chicken and spices in a cream and tomato-based sauce), the chutney, the bread-ohhh, the bread. They have their own tandoori oven (used to cook chicken and meat in a yogurt sauce at a high temperature). Even better- the bread is baked along the interior walls of the oven. There is a new, youthful energy at Mazza- people with a lot of pride in their restaurant and food. The chef is a Renaissance man who will proudly talk about everything from his oven to the tiling and electrical work he did. Please venture in and try the food. Even if you've been leery of trying Indian- the staff can help you make delicious choices! Oh- and I think they will have carry-out service and delivery service (eventually) within a two mile radius of the restaurant (located at 12 Mile and Tyler).

Our family just ate a most delicious dinner at Mazza. The staff was very attentive and pleasant. We did not wait for anything. We had the Mumbai Chicken Thali style (which I would highly recommend), the Dhaka Chicken and the Shrimp Poori appetizer. Everything came to our table hot, was nicely spiced and wonderfully aromatic. I loved the entire experience and will definitely go back.

you know what i LOVE about Indian food??? the spice, the flavor, the complex and aromatic combination dancing on my taste buds with each delicious bite! much to my dismay, none of this was present during my dinner at Mazza. i took my sweetie out for Indian food to increase the excitement of a Wednesday night. we ordered fried vegetable appetizers, vegetarian delights and bread to accompany. The chutneys that accompanied the bland appetizers were watery, but ended up being the most flavorful thing on our table that evening. Chana masala is my standard order at an Indian restaurant if I am unsure about what might be good. Usually, even at a place with not-so-great food, chana masala rarely disappoints. So, I went to my favorite standard and was ... quite underwhelmed and extremely disappointed. It is difficult for one as verbose as myself to even attempt to describe to you the sensation of eating hot (temperature wise) food without tasting *anything*. Simply put, it was the most bland, devoid of any flavor thing I have eaten. As in, it literally tasted like nothing. And I ordered it "medium" on the spice level! It was not just me, my sweetie also ordered her standard Indian go-to dish, vegetable korma, and her experience mirrored mine exactly. No flavor, whatsoever. The decor was standard, the service was nice and prompt, the prices were average. I will never, ever go back. And I would never, ever recommend anyone go there. And, seriously, all of this makes me sad to say.

My wife and I used to go in here periodically back when the place was Passage to India. Just made our first trip today since it has been Mazza. We ordered the Shrimp Poori appetizer, and got Vegetable Korma and Dal Makhani lunch plates... which came with complimentary soup and choice of rice or Naan. We also ordered a side of Paratha bread. Bill came out to about $20 before tax/tip. Totally affordable. For my tastes, I prefer the new flavor profiles to Passage to India. The spices were more interesting and it was a bit more outside-the-box to what I am accustomed to getting at most American Indian restaurants. More subtle/complex and less hit-you-over-the-head than Passage was... though passage was unique compared to the norm in its own way as well... I do prefer Mazza's take overall. I always judge an Indian place first by their Dal Makhani. This was one of the best I've ever had, probably my 2nd favorite aside from my personal gold standard at Raja Rani in Ann Arbor. The Dal Makhani at Mazza was actually green, whereas I am used to it being brown, and the flavor was knockout crazy good. Our 20 month year old daughter was loving it too. Some other interesting quirks are their very liberal use of FRESH and pungent cilantro. The lemon-lentil soup and the Shrimp Poori were doused with the stuff. Which I love, but beware of you are a cilantro-hater. The paratha bread was interesting as well; was thicker/crispier than any paratha I have ever had and tasted kind of like pie crust. But somehow it worked, and was quite yummy Looking forward to going back and trying the meat side of the menu and some other standard classics... such as pakoras/tikkas and the like.
