    Tried this place years ago for carry-out (typical Detroit Coney items) a couple of times and they were slow as molasses. Unbearably slow. And we're patient. So we basically forgot about them. Searching on Yelp for a place to eat recently and saw all the positive reviews about their Macedonian, Polish and Hungarian items. So decided to give them a try at lunch today by dining in. They have around 7 tables plus stools at the counter. Ignoring the high price, I ordered six pierogis ($8.75). Typically, you get 2 kraut, 2 potato, and 2 cheese, but I decided to pass on the kraut. They had no issue with this special order. Pierogis came with a small plastic container of sour cream. They were fried - no choice given. In my opinion, the potato pierogis lacked flavor. The cheese ones were better - very sweet - but still nothing to brag about. My companion thought the dough was too "soft" i.e. it lacked bite considering they were fried. Menu seemed to imply that the pierogis (and maybe all their Polish dishes) are only available on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Added a cup of chicken dumpling soup ($1.50 extra at lunch time). The dumplings were good size, the soup had a lot of flavor (salt/pepper primarily), but the chicken was in witness protection. Next time we want good Polish food, we'll make the drive out to Two Sisters in Rochester especially for chicken dumpling soup. My companion went with the Hungarian goulash (~$7-$8); I believe there are two different kinds of goulash on the menu. Contained same dumplings that were in the soup. Included chunks of beef which were super tender. Companion felt the dish was "a big bowl of beef vegetable soup with nice big chunks of vegetables" plus the dumplings. Satisfying, but not her cup of tea. Now in their (Ellie's Grill) defense, we did not try the Macedonian dishes which appear to be all pork-based.

    A bonus star for Ellie's. They have crepes for dessert!!! The cheese crepes reminded me of blini in the best of ways. They were so tasty! This is my new go-to diner.

    I'm not sure what they hype is all about. It's a pretty dull looking place and there was nothing special about the food we had. The Goulash was kind of bland. The menu is kind of mixed up. It has a few coney like items on it but not really enough to call it a coney. So it's a hungarian restaurant with a few coney items just in case people are too scared to try the specials. Ellie's is ok if you're in the neighborhood but in my opinion it's not worth making a special trip to.

    Amazing home cooked food with fresh herbs growing out back. I give 5 stars for their food, but 4 stars because they cut down their menu & no longer offer my favorite item, the Ruben. My boyfriend is OBSESSED with this place and always orders the chicken finger pita, I do admit, it's the best chicken finger pita I've ever had. The owner walks around to make sure you are satisfied and the waitstaff is always friendly and polite. I wish they offered a better breakfast selection on the weekends and that their polish items weren't only on wed & thurs, because it's delicious! Prices are fair. If you have the chance to dine here do it, you will be hooked.

    If you can't make it to the Polish Village, then this is the place. Thursday Polish specials were great. Clean place. Patricia our waitress was very friendly and kind. It's one of the places you don't want the word out about because you want to keep it to yourself. Best stuffed cabbage!

    thanks again to janelle and yelp. being the not so little polish boy i am, this is my kind of food. slow cooked and with lots of flavor. ellies is a little coney island next to the BBC in Berkley. don't order any of the coney food though, stick to the ethnic food. james had szekely goulash and i had hungarian goulash. we both ordered the dumpling soup to start. the meal came with a bowl of the most delicious dumpling soup ever. no need for chicken in this soup. the dumplings were enough protein by themselves. i was in love with the creamy broth that was so good there was no way somebody doesn't make it with lots of time and love. my hungarian goulash was a lot like a beef stew, but with a much lighter broth and little bits of dumpling. all the vegetables were perfectly cooked and the meat was fall apart tender. james' szekely goulash was amazing. i'm going back for this dish soon. the sauerkraut was lightly vinegary and was so velvety. the pork was delicious and reminded me of the hungarian pancake from polish village. pork really takes well to some slow cooking. the sour cream really complimenting everything. our meal also came with some fresh crusty white bread. total cost $23 dollars including drinks and i could barely eat half. this place is worth it! love, juston

    I had a really bad experience at Ellie's. Mediocre food and awful service! Let me start by saying that this was one of the worst services I"ve ever had from a waitress and that affected my review immensely. After Christmas shopping with my mother on a friday, we stopped at Ellie's because of their neon sign advertising polish food (in addition to other Eastern european dishes). The building is small with maybe 12 booths/tables. We sat down at a booth because there were no waitresses visible. A few minutes later a woman, who would turn out not be our waitress, said "we'll be with you in a minute". A few minutes later our waitress (blond highlights) came over and gave us our menus. From the first moment I saw her, I knew she really didn't care about the job and we were going to get terrible service. We both scanned the menu and couldn't find any polish dishes. We did notice some polish dishes on the daily special menu, under Wednesday and Thursday, so I waved over the waitress to ask if they were serving polish food. Her response was that they only serve polish food (sans Kielbasa which they serve all the time) on Wed. and Thurs. I told her we had our hearts set on Polish food and she said "yeah its only on wed and thurs." and walked away. She didn't offer to check to see if they had something polish in the back, hell she didn't even offer to suggest something else on the menu.......I was stunned. A restaurant advertises polish food on a neon sign and then only serves it 2 days a week. We probably should have left right then in there, but we were seated and had drinks so we figured we might as well try the food. I had my heart set on Goabki (stuffed cabbage) but settled with the Spinach pie, which I was told by my waitress that I couldn't order as a dinner, but had to order coleslaw and rice sides instead. My mom ordered the fish and chips. We both had the Macedonian cole slaw, which is cabbage mixed with vinegar and oil. The waitress brought out 1 piece of bread with our coleslaw since apparently only dinners come with bread... The slaw was alright but I prefer the creamy coleslaw better. My mom didn't like though and set it aside. The waitress didn't ask about her coleslaw, just said "are you finished with that?". FInally the meals came and they were ok, nothing special. I've had much better fish and chips in the area. But again, the waitress did not ask us onetime throughout the entire meal if our food was good. The final straw was the refill on my pop. I finished my glass somewhere near the start of the meal and I waited to see how long it would take the waitress to fill my drink. We decided if she didn't offer refill our drinks, we weren't going to leave a tip. As I was near finished my meal, the other waitress who had been eyeing my drink as well, asked me if i wanted more and refilled me drink. Our waitress didn't apologize or anything. Thus, this was the first time in a very long time, perhaps ever, that I didn't leave a tip. The waitress made no attempt to make us comfortable, to even ensure that our meal was alright. 0- Stars for my waitress. 2-stars for the food. Don't go here! They may have some Eastern European speciaties, but its not worth the hassle of poor service and mediocre quality food. There are several restaurants within a few minutes drive where your experience will be much much better.

    I've driven past Ellie's for years, looked at its exterior and thought, "Meh, looks like nothing much." I was SO wrong. It's a wonderful little gem! My meal started with chicken dumpling soup. Mmmmm, very tasty, very fresh. Next, beef stroganoff on noodles. Amazing! Cooked to order, delicately flavored, completely satisfying. This is the food your grandmother made back in the Old Country...and if your family's not from the Old Country, then lucky you, you have a fairy grandmother in Ellie to make it for you. Service was very friendly and warm. This is not a place where entrees arrive quickly: everything is prepared to order by Ellie herself. Sit back, enjoy the homey atmosphere, and prepare to be amazed.

    Grabbed a carry out on polish special day. Everything tasted good and staff was very welcoming and friendly. Small place, maybe 8, 4 tops inside and they were all taken. So that's a good sign as well. Ranch dressing for salad was good. I will be back. Glad I tried it.

    I love it. The food here is just amazing. As many other reviewers have mentioned, from the outside Ellie's Grill doesn't look extraordinary at all. Even the interior of the restaurant, while neat and clean, doesn't give any hint at how special the food is here. The Beef Stroganoff is out of this world. Mushrooms, beef, noodles, all swirling in a tasty, creamy sauce. It is so good that once I found it, I never deviate. My husband gets a few different things, including the Hungarian Beef Tips, and all of it is outstanding. There are Polish specials a couple days a week as well, so you can satisfy your pierogi craving. Ellie's is family dining in the sense that there is no alcohol served There is counter seating available and several booths. Dessert looks really good here, but I never have room for it. Service is friendly and efficient. Dinner for two (drinking water) is about 20 dollars before tip and is so worth it. Parking is behind the restaurant. We frequently get there after work about 6:30 or so and don't normally experience a wait.

    Now I have eaten here so many times I can't count but until last visit I had not tried the stroganoff. It is the very best I have ever eaten!!! And there is a cabbage and kielbasa soup that is out of this world! And of course, one must have or share some kreamish for dessert because you won't find anything like it anywhere else. It is, altogether, my favorite diner. Don't forget to try the portobello mushroom sandwich, too!

    This place! I read about it on Yelp when exploring restaurants in my new neighborhood and had to try it. I've already gone back 3 or 4 times, and every time I try something new. My favorite so far was the chicken paprikash! Definitely give it a try.

    Definitely not your Grandmothers Pierogies! I thought wednesday specials meant I was getting a deal.We placed a carry-out order from ellies with a few co-workers since its not far from work and we love our pierogies. We paid $9.50 for 6 normal sized perogies which is insane! I thought since they were $9.50 they must be bigger than normal... definitely not the case here. Not to mention they tasted like OLD OIL (Eeeek) and the cheese one's were a little scary with some sort of white cheese inside of them. The cost of the 6 perogies should have been around $6.00 I mean they are basically stealing your money at the $10.00 price, and dont forget you will probably be hungry 2 hours after eating these. We asked for extra sour cream with our order and we were told 'NO' what kind of restaurant says NO... not even a charge for it?? Just a NO! Clearly I will stick with my local grocery store Mrs. T's Pierogies or my families recipe but I clearly wont go back to Ellie's... what a dissapointment :(

    2011 FOOD/Hungarian fare Beef tips with brown gravy & plain white rice - not too salty & the beef was tender. Macedonia grill plate was tender & left me with a portion to snack on later. Kremish dessert is like a vanilla creme pie. Dangerously tasty if like this sort of pie. SERVICE Ally was our waitress. She was friendly & personable. Service was good. EXTRA INFO Restaurant &the parking lots small & this place is packed during lunch time. Great mom & pops joint.

    When ever I think of Detroit dill pickle soup comes to mind. I never had it anywhere else and no matter how hard I try it never is as good as I get in Detroit. After eating at Ellie's now I will think of mushroom beef barley soup too. Oh my is it ever good. A suburban diner that cooks Hungarian. Polish, and Macedonian? Who would expect it does it all so very well. I saw many of my favorites on the menu but figured I would try Macedonian for the first time. The Macedonian mixed grill is similar to Serbian food with the addition of hot pepper. It was all good even the squash which I normally save for the compost pile. Portions are generous and require a carry out container. I saved room for a home made kremes, pronounced kremish which was almost as good as ones I used to buy from a Hungarian bakery. That is a compliment to a cook who just bakes as a side line. The owner comes out into the small dining room to thank customers. I personally thanked the cook. It is not a matter of if ever I am back in the area thing. Now that I found Ellie nothing can keep me from returning.

    Never judge a book by its cover right? Ellies Grill is no exception. A little mom and pops place disguised as a coney island, but secretly is a Hungarian/Macedonian restaurant. Its a standard looking place both on the outside and inside. Server were very nice and helpful for questions on the menu. With several reviews about the mix grill, its a must and contains all the Macedonian specialty meats. Is was a chilly day out so why not start with their cabbage soup. The soup was the perfect temperature for a nice cold day and deliciously hardy with small chunks of cabbage, veggies, small pieces of slow cooked meat that really disintegrated when you ate it. They mentioned that they prepare the soup from scratch onsite. Now for the real deal, the mix grill. Boy, can I get it again? It was that good. I didn't know which meat to end with, but finally decided on the pork skewer. All of them are absolutely delicious, medium to medium-rare cooked, and fresh with a balanced layer of spices and saltiness. The rice below it was cooked nicely and had a nice tomato base without looking like it has it. It also soaks up some of the juices from the meat giving it some extra flavor. At first I didn't think the fries needed to be there and added an American element that was unnecessary, but decided the it gave some a textural component and acted as a palate cleanser between the meats. The only thing that was unnecessary was the diced onions with paprika. Tried it, but didn't care for that. Lastly, I enjoyed Ellie's food and if you do to, ask her to come out and take a break from cooking to let her know you enjoyed it. That's right, the owner is right back there cooking for you. It's like she invited you over for dinner. Enjoy!

    If you blink, you'll miss Ellie's on Coolidge, in Berkley. It's a tiny building and in spite of having been there a dozen or more times now, I still have to really keep an eye out for it. There are maybe 8 booths and counter seating and it's pretty cozy. I wouldn't really call this a coney since I don't even remember seeing anything about coneys on the menu, although I'm sure they are there. To me, Ellie's is about comfort food. Straight Up. I've only gone for dinner and it has been excellent every time. There is generally only one cook, so plan on a little bit of a wait for your food as it's all made to order and essentially, "homemade". They have recurring daily specials and I particularly like Polish day, which I believe is Wednesday. They also have a Mexican special one day, but the best of them all is Friday's Fish and Mac special. Unbelievable. It makes me so happy. The fish is fresh, the batter is light and crispy and the tarter sauce is outstanding... for tarter sauce. The mac and cheese is a cheese blend with shells and some of the best I've had. The only thing that would make me like it more would be if it was baked. Last night I wanted the fish, but wanted to skip the potatoes or mac, so they made me mixed vegetables on the grill that were lovely. In addition to all that, they have incredible soups (the green bean soup is stellar!) and a rather impressive Macedonian and Hungarian portion of the menu, with lots of meat! Stews, goulashes, kabobs and the like. The Chicken Paprikash is absolute comfort and love. It seems to be a relatively still undiscovered gem, which is great. I'm giving it five stars because I have never had a meal there that I didn't thoroughly enjoy (often resulting in moans of satisfaction), the waitresses are always attentive and friendly, and it is much more than a coney. Don't tell too many people about it, though. Part of its charm is that it's still a bit of a secret.

    It's the only place I know that has Beef Stroganoff -- and it's yummy! Great comfort food. The restaurant isn't much to look at and it's not big at all. Maybe 8 booths and counter space to sit at. I've been there 4 times and always had excellent service. As for prices, there're a bit higher than some other places but, imo, worth it. There are some great soups too. My favorite is the green bean soup. I will say I was a little disappointed with the chicken paprikash because I really thought it should have more paprika. Then I found out that you can ask for the paprikash or the goulash to be spicier. Apparently they tone the spicy foods down to suit the American palate. So ask for a spicier version of those two if you like it that way. I plan to go on Wednesday or Thursday to try their Polish menu (they only have the Polish specials two days a week). It would be great to be able to get that on any day (you can get the kielbasa but that's it) but the place is so small, they probably have to limit what they fix on any one day.

    Very good quality ethnic comfort food in a small diner like setting. Looks like it had been a coney or donut shop. A local Berkleyite took me there saying it had a solid reputation. Friendly staff and owners.

    Yummy. I have not been near as adventurous as I should/could be, but mmmm they have some good food. Ive tried many of the soups and each and every one has been delish. The spinach pie is great and clearly homemade and the salads are super fresh. The portions for the dinners are huge and could probably serve 2 people fairly easily. The chicken paprikash is delicious (but the chicken is on-the-bone...meh). My parents LOVE the beef stroganoff (and split it), but I have yet to try it. Ellie's is close to my office, and I often suggest it when contractors (etc) are looking for somewhere to grab lunch - and they have always come back saying it was a great choice.

    There is a reason why there aren't tons of Hungarian restaurants around and why no one brags about going to culinary school in Poland. The food isn't the type that will blow you away. It wont be the best meal of your life, but that's just the nature of the food. For some amazing home cooked good old comfort food, this is the place to come. Almost all of the food is made from scratch and its like Mom was in the kitchen. I've only been here once but i can tell how all the soups were great because the chicken and dumpling soup was near perfect. The mixed grill was great and an awesome introduction to all their meats and the homemade dumplings just made you want to curl up in front of a fire. Like i said before, its not going to be the best meal of your life, or even come close, but it will definitely put a smile on your face.

    I was in this restaurant on 8/24/13. This was the WORST experience I have ever had at any type of restaurant. Our service was horrible, and the owner just made excuses for her "Saying its just business - the girls don't like to stay." But that's their job, plus the restaurant is only open till 8p.m. anyway. There was at least 8 errors made, including my food being made wrong, and once I finally got it every else was done eating. It wasn't my error ordering it was the sever writing down the wrong order. Then they didn't even discount the food. After waiting all that time the food wasn't even that good. I would advise anyone looking at this restaurant to keep on driving. It's not worth the hour and a half for one meal.

    I went back to Ellies again for lunch (and although breakfast is served all day long I finally went for a real meal). I ate the chicken paprikash (I may have misspelled it) after reading another Yelp review. I must say that it was delicious. It is probably a half a chicken, cooked into a creamy paprika sauce and served with small homemade dumplings. Now, I grew up in Eastern Pennsylvania as part of a Polish/Slovak family (thanks, Mom!) and we ate small homemade dumplings often, so I can tell that these babies were the real deal. I enjoyed eating this so much that I continued eating long after I should have retired, but I manged to still bring enough home to feed myself a snack later, and feed my husband dinner! Truly, I am converted to an all-day Ellie's fan. I can't wait to go back and try some of the pork dishes outlined in other yelp reviews!

    The Polish food is amazing! The pancakes for breakfast taste like cake. I wish they were open on Sundays. And they are a little expensive, but you get what you pay for.

    YEP, best comfort food around! Awesome, fresh, old world flavor. Best beef stroganoff and apple strudel around! The prices have gone up quite a bit in the 5 years I've been going there. Well worth the price though. I just can't afford to go there as often as I would like. I recommend trying the chicken paprikash and the macedonian cole slaw.

    Freakin' amazing!!! Their Macedonian grill is delicious, their daily soups are always changing but always delicious - they're kitchen sink soups, so don't expect continuity, even if the name is the same, the soup may be different, but SOOO good!!!! The beef stroganoff is a poem of delights singing in your mouth. The paprikash is paen of delight. I'm sure other things are delicious, but I never get past the Hungarian traditional favorites, and my husband is stuck on the grill... ;)

    Wednesday's are the polish specials, so I had the polish Combo. As always, it was excellent. Should have stopped there, but had to go on with the triple chocolate cake. Overstuffed, but happy.

    The menu has been updated since the last time I visited. It's refined and more focused now. Excellent move. The food is still excellent homemade real food made with care. We split the Polish Frittata! Who ever made up that dish is a genius! Potatoes, eggs, kielbasa, onions and sauerkraut. Or course is comes with sour cream and chive sauce on the side because it wouldn't really be Polish without sour cream now would it? Oh man, it was sooo good. Ellie's should be packed with lines out the door but it isn't. Location? maybe. Décor? probably. People are snobs. Get in there for the food people.

    This place may not look like much driving by, but it has delicious food. I love the pork paprikash - their homemade spaetzle is so good and the sauce is amazing! Also like their soups, a rotating selection of tasty concoctions. Friendly staff too. Give this place a try!
