We went to Alex's this evening specifically because I really wanted corned beef and cabbage for St. Paddy's day. Corned Beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes - all excellent and I ended up taking some home. (11.99) Also really liked my chicken lemon rice soup that came with it. And, I had to keep my kid from finishing my rice pudding that came with the meal as well. My 13 year old wanted a greek salad. Would have been nice if they offered some sort of greek salad/sandwich combination. oh well. He ended up with a medium greek and a 1/2 pound burger. I really wanted my corned beef, so I had told him he could get whatever he wanted - otherwise I wasnt' really excited about spending so much for a 13 year old to eat. (5.99 + 6.99). I thought we'd have leftovers to take home of his, but He ended up finishing everything. We both really enjoyed our meals. Our waitress was super friendly and attentive. Our food came out quickly. Everything was the right temperature.

I've been coming to Alex's since I was a little girl. I used to love the food. .. Now I'm singing a sident tune. First of all the service is terrible. On my last visit a woman who had just finished dining went out to her car to realize her battery would not start. She cane back inside and politely asked if someone there might have some jump cables. Not only did the staff say no the laughed at her misfortune after she left. HOW RUDE. I understand if they don't have cables but they could have offered to call someone for her. So I went outside and gave her car a jump using my own car and cables. While I did this the waitress brought my food and left it on the table. .. What! I can't begin to describe how angry I was at that. I don't want my dogs sitting at the table, how do I know that a stranger didn't drop something in it or anything happened while I was outside. Besides the wait staff... The food has gone down hill, when I ordered my food today my chicken was dark from being fried in old grease and my mother's fish tasted like it was frozen and fried with water still on it. This is the last time I'll come here , I'll stop at country oven just before it. Food tastes better there and the staff is friendly

I've returned to Alex's a number of times since the visit I wrote about in 2010. My experiences have been better than that initial visit. All in all the food is really good for that type of cuisine (quick, inexpensive - Coney Island type). Nothing they serve will blow you away, off but when you don't want to spend a lot of money and want decent food, this is the place. Plus it's right down the street from me. I would have given it four stars, but the service there is really lacking. Like the other reviewers have stated, the service is really hit or miss depending on who you get and most of the time it is a miss. A lot of the waitresses give the perception that they really don't want to wait on you and would rather twirl their hair at the counter or talk amongst themselves.

This placed has never failed me. Breakfast meats are great, I mention this because it is way to easy to get a paper thin piece of bacon elsewhere. Fish and chips, liver and mashed potatoes, broiled chicken and rice, corned beef sandwich, salmon salad and a few off the dishes I have tried, and as I said before, Alex's has never failed me. Service is friendly, rapid and attentive. I go there on regular basis and not a single person whom I have brought, left unsatisfied.

Alex's - both in Berkley and the other location in Rochester - are great little diners. Not so classy, not at all high-end, but it's good, quick honest food at a good price. Alex will sometimes come around and see how things are going, and he's a pretty decent guy. He's often curious to see how whatever he made up that day is going over- to that end he could stand to educate the staff a little on whatever that ends up being. Sometimes you might ask about one of the specials on the menu and they'll have no idea other than "It's something Alex made." For me though that's part of the charm. I get a kick out of that, your mileage may vary.

We come here for breakfast all the time. The food is good with good sized portions. It can be busy ona Sunday after church. If there is a wait, it is usually no more than 10 minutes, but it's worth it.

I'm reviewing the Chicken Gyro! I live in Berkley and have ate at Alex's many times and to be honest, majority of their food is just ok. It's typical family/coney type stuff. But their Chicken Gyro pita is one of the best around...a hidden gem of yumminess. The Tzatziki sauce is perfected...with red onion, grilled chicken and tomato you can't go wrong ordering this.

Overpriced mediocrity. This place confirms my belief that any restaurant that has "family" in its name, is not a good place to eat.

I met a few old friends here on the morning of New Year's Eve. We hadn't seen each other in a very long time; so we had much to catch up on. I had the veggie omelet - which was okay. Nothing special or fantastic but decent. After awhile our waitress quit refilling our water and coffee - she seemed upset. When we went to cash out our waitress was visibly upset that we stayed so long. She was rude and basically threw my change at me. I knew we were there a long while; and I left a $3 tip on my $5 dollar omelet. There wasn't a huge wait or line to get in - or else we would have moved along. I totally get that she was irritated with us; but don't be so obvious. Oh well. Not going back.

Stopped in for a (very) late breakfast today. I had eggs, hash browns and wheat toast and was not disappointed. Very tasty, but not greasy.

Theres's nothing worse to me than a waitress with an attitude! Thats what they were serving on Sunday at Alex's. The food was nothing to rave about. I suppose if it were the only place open, I would stop.

I have been to Alex's 6 times. Only once did I not get excellent service. The bread and butter is to die for, the soup is usually delicious, and you always get a huge portion of food- so expect to take left overs. I would definitely go back again. I wasn't crazy about the vegetable stir fry, but it was ok. So far my favorite was the strawberry chicken salad. The lasagna is delicious :D

I am a frequent customer at Alex's, primarily because I live close. I have found the service depends completely on which waitress you get. Some are most cordial. Some are downright unfriendly. There is frequently discussion going on between them or with the kitchen. They will completely ignore the person at the cash register. That being said, the food is good. It won't knock your socks off. But good. Personally, I prefer Nello's.

Admittedly, it's been a while since I have been to Alex's. I do, however, like Alex's. I just don't live around there. So, I don't make it there very much anymore. The breakfast items I have had are your standard meat, eggs, and potatoes kind of thing. They're just done better here than at most of the countless restaurants of this kind.

Came here for lunch on a Saturday around 1. Place was quite busy and we got seated promptly. Good service overall. Atmosphere is nice and inviting. I got a BLT sandwich with fries. Sandwich was ok- not much love went into making it. Fries were just ok as well. My fiancé got a spinach, feta and tomato omelet with well done hash browns. Omelet came out with no tomato and overdone- hashbrowns tasted like they were sitting around all day and were dry. Ok restaurant for a quick bit, but nothing to write home about. Average prices for a coney-style place. We've had better experiences here, so hopefully we can update this review at a later time

I have been going to Alex's for years but this morning they outdid themselves. Everyone needs to try their stuffed French toast !!! Okay, the rest of party called it strawberry pie in bread but it was awesome !! They also managed to serve all 8 of it at the same time and kept all the special requests straight. Their dinners are always good and inexpensive !! Their pink Greek salad dressing is good too.

This is another place I go to occasionally for breakfast. Once again, the service is always fast and friendly. However, the food is mediocre, probably Gordon Food Service, or Sysco. I always go for breakfast, and my eggs are always overcooked, even when I ask for over easy. The prices are reasonable. My coffee cup will sometimes have lipstick on it, so I question the cleanliness of the place. There is a cook with slicked back hair who is always eating food while he is cooking yours, I don't like him. How hard is it to cook eggs? They are always burned on the outside, and raw in the middle. The hash browns are raw, and the meat is always cold. You are probably asking yourself, "why do you go there then?" As I stated in a previous post, I don't have a lot of choices in Berkley for breakfast.

  • Rachel B.

Meh. The food is all right (I would put that at three stars if I was rating the restaurant solely on the food), but the service leaves a lot to be desired. The waitress forgot several items and had to be reminded about them and we were never offered refills on our drinks.

Friendly service. Overall it was a satisfying stop for a quick dinner with a friend. The food was just okay. The chicken strip pita was but mostly lettuce but the chicken that was on it was seasoned well and tasty. The lemon rice soup wasn't very lemony but it was ok.

This place is one of my favorites. It's the perfect brunch spot when you have guests in from out of town and want to grab some home cooked breakfast. Their chicken finger pita is SO GOOD! You get pretty large portions of everything. The chicken parm is fresh, cooked to order! I haven't had a single bad thing from there. Service is always quick!

Heads or Tails at Alex's. Heads you might get a clean fork. Tails you might get a napkin. Heads you might get decent service. Tails you get the correct bill. Heads you get a few smashed potato chips. Tails you get hot fries. Heads you enjoy your delicious sandwich in good company. Tails the server tells you to box your food before you are done eating so you leave with the box because you feel so rushed and go home and finish eating. Good luck and bring your lucky coin!

Very standard diner, serving up family-friendly short-order food. We came here for breakfast and it was as you'd expect: good. Alex's is convenient for people in the area to gather and meet for a meal. There's ample seating, parking, and menu items. Breakfast seems to be the best bet for all food you're going to order here. Standard fare applies, with some "light" and "heavy" options thrown in for good measure. Corned beef hash is good, which is always my go-to item in breakfast places. Everyone seemed happy with their selections and they managed to serve eight of us at the same time, which usually never happens in diners. Service was friendly, prompt, and available throughout the meal.

The prices for what we got is remarkable! Hubby had lasagna, choice of soup or salad and choice of desert. The portions were huge. I had a mini-Greek salad and gyro. We had water and the bill was only $20.00! Amazing. The food is good, the service was good. We will be back.

I had the baked mostaccioli it was quite delicious. I look forward to trying more. But so far I give it 5 stars. I guess I'll have to give an update next time I come here.

Excellent salad! I had the medium strawberry salad with chicken. The chicken was extraordinary!!! The salad dressing was a delicious vinegarette! I was so so impressed with the bean soup because it had a tomato base... Not what I expected. Wished I would have had the chicken and rice soup. My friends said it was great. Service was ok. I would recommend the place for lunch.

Love this place. The service is super quick. Only thing is I've gotten one particular waitress that always seems to forget we are there and takes a while to help us out when we are seated even when it's not busy. But otherwise the place is very quick, everything tastes fresh, always friendly, and has me coming back for more. :-) thanks guys!

Not my kinda place. The food was mediocre, the price was fine and the owner was a little to forward. I saw him yell at employee and he asked me very aggressively why I didn't like the meatloaf. I know he was trying to be nice, but it came off curt and gruff. Won't be returning.

This is your standard family restaurant. There is always good service and good food. The problem is there a Many good family restaurants for way less money. The prices are way too high for what you're getting compared with the same at other nearby restaurants.

Everything at Alex's is great! The nightly specials are all great! The Chicken Palimino is better than any "white tablecloth" restaurant. I've had breakfast, lunch and dinner and always felt I had a good meal.

The service here was very friendly and speedy. I didn't have to wait to be seated although it was about 8pm when I got there. There were a lot to choose from on the menu and should satisfy even the very picky eaters. I had your basic cheeseburger and French Fries with a chocolate shake. The food was hot and it tasted like your average cheeseburger, nothing really special. My shake was thick and creamy. I will go back to try their breakfast menu.

Walked out without eating. Our food took forever to get to our table. When it finally arrived half the dishes were cold. The gravy had that film on it the forms while sitting. All the waitress could say was what do you want me to do. We asked for the manager but he did not come out. Save yourself some time and skip this place.

I unfortunately dread writing this bad review but the time has come... For years everyone in my life has hated this restaurant and told me not to go there. From bad customer service to gross food. I however, an in love with their breakfast skillet. That's all they usually have to offer. Until today when a waitress took my order over the phone and when I asked for it to be well done & to have the eggs on the bottom I was told "we can't do any specifications. We are far to busy today to do that"........ In shock I let my order go through. When I went to pick my food up the restaurant was kind of marginally busy. Nothing crazy for a Sunday. The waitresses at the front all had attitudes. The staff was horrible. My food is some how cold. My food that they couldn't find by the way. This place left a horrible taste in my mouth and I will not be returning.

Very good homestyle cooking restaurant. Had a fantastic Greek salad with delicious raspberry dressing. Husband had a delicious corned beef sandwich. We went with a large group and the staff was so accommodating and friendly. Took great care of us and we will definitely be back.

Honestly, I prefer Berkley Coney Island, but only because they're open 24 hours and are slightly cheaper. Alex's is exactly what you would expect from a family restaurant. The food's definitely not bad, but it's nothing to write home about either. It's such an average, expected place that I literally have nothing to say about it. Not that that's a bad thing.

Kinda bummed out the last few times coming here. Maybe it's my Yelp Karma biting me in the ass, I dunno. Got some gyros carryout last night for me and misses....really disappointing. Seems prices went up considerably (almost $14 for 2 gyros) the amount of lamb/beef was reduced dramatically- replaced by a fat fistfull of onions. Also, the formerly very nice waitstaff seem to have calloused over time and no longer exude good attitudes. Bummer

The ambiance was very depressing, but I was there during a peak-early bird hour, and I was surrounded by many frowning, sickly people. That wasn't happy. The food is a few steps down from Nello's, in my opinion. After a few visits, I settled on a vegetable pita/gyro, which was actually OK. The goat cheese really works well. As for other menu items, my great-uncle loves the Turkey Dinner, but my grandfather was not at all fond of the veal cutlets. Me, as long as I stick to the gyro, I have no complaints. The service was a little disjointed and curt, and it seemed aimed at quick turnaround.

Utterly, completely MEH. Frankly, there are too many other better options out there to merit a return trip. I went there for breakfast. Whenever I see corned beef hash on the breakfast menu, my first question is always the same -- "Do you make your hash or is it canned?" I figured I stood a decent chance, since they have corned beef on the menu. Much to my horror, the hash is canned. Canned, with all of the charm and consistency of dog food. Still feeling like corned beef, and wishing to avoid "alpo hash," I ordered the corned beef and swiss omelette. The corned beef used in the omelette is lunch meat. That's right, lunch meat. Strike three, forever dooming Alex's to the seventh circle of lousy food hell, was my toast. But Tam, you ask -- how can somebody possibly screw up toast? Lemme tell you how, my friend .... by serving it cold, with a big lump of margarine trapped helplessly between the two slices of toast. I think the "game plan" of Alex's is to fling a chunk of margarine on the toast, thinking the heat of the toast will melt the fake butter. I've got news for you, guys ... this brilliant scheme only works if the toast is, in fact, hot at the time of the flinging. Otherwise, it's just a sad, gloopy mess.

I've been coming to Alex's for years. The restaurant has been completely remodeled but the staff, service, and excellent food has stayed the same. I liked the old dining room better than the new one only because it was familiar and cozier. But now it's bigger and accommodates more people which is always good. No more waiting in line on Sunday morning. I have been there several times when the owner Alex stopped by our table to briefly chat with us and to see how everything is. Normally I don't like it when a manager or owner interrupts my meal but Alex is really friendly and does it in a way that's not intrusive. I stop in for breakfast because they have a wide variety of delicious omelette's and breakfast combinations. I usually get the Greek omelet or the breakfast special ( eggs, hash browns, sausage, toast). The omelette's are not the skimpy ones you get at a typical diner, they are loaded and pretty size-able. On occasion I'll stop in and grab a gyro dinner or whatever the special is that night. The prices are very reasonable and whether you get breakfast or lunch, you definitely get your money's worth. Even though I live further away from Alex's now, on Sunday's I still make the drive to dine at Alex's. Alex's equals high standards and consistency. My favorite little diner.

this is a great place to get breakfast, lunch or dinner. the best part is that if you order a dinner combo, you get dinner rolls, choice of soup or salad, entre AND dessert for under $10! their tapioca pudding is the best, much better than rice puddings from other diners. my favorite entre in the fish and mac and cheese combo. their portions are generous and the mac and chees is excellent. they have great and inexpensive breakfast specials, too. just wish that this place was open longer than 10pm- there are those nights when i wanna grab some breakfast food (my all-time favorite) and snack on their tapioca pudding.

Came here to see what all the hype was about for breakfast one day. I ordered pancakes, eggs and something else that was forgettable. I was a bit turned off when they brought me little frozen fake butter packets to go with my pancakes. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. The service could have been a lot better as well. I had to ask for everything (water, a straw, silverware, my check).

Alex's epitomizes family dining. Situated in downtown Berkley, the restaurant's long hours and central location make it an excellent stop between shopping and errands. You can bring your little cousin or your grandma or your trendy cousin in town for just the afternoon, and they will find something satisfactory on the menu. Large corner booths seat six no problem, and quick table configurations accommodate groups. This is one of the few restaurants with bar seating if you really want to watch the short order cooks. True to form, the offerings run the spectrum from large breakfast omelettes to seafood and grilled dinner entrees. Family cooking equals hearty meals in large portions. Daily rotating specials invariably feature a pasta option, a vegetarian-friendly entree, several soups, and one of multiple fresh salads. I have not distinguished whether the cooks use seasonal themes, but a typical night might feature tilapia done in a cherry glaze or a seasoned pork tenderloin served with mashed potatoes and green beans. Some of these specials are real hits, and the consistent quality on their crispy veal and chicken parmigiana brings us back for more. The stirfry is a miss for me due to the extreme sweetness of the sauce. Servers accommodate dietary restrictions and substitutions without batting an eyelash -- try getting that sort of service with a smile in Royal Oak. Breakfast comes fast and cheap with whipped cream and syrup in abundance. My sister-in-law and I have a soft spot for the pancakes, which come out hot and fluffy. Pop in around 1 PM for a late brunch, and a window-side seat allows a lovely perch to watch the city flow by. The service is friendly and cheerful, and servers always want to say hello to the baby. Meals come quick even when Alex's is slammed.

I met up with some from-out-of-the country friends here recently, and was very pleasantly surprised by what I thought would be a run-of-the-mill diner. First of all, the service was great...my party stayed for two hours (since my friends had just enough time to meet up with me and we had a lot of catching up to do!) and took up one of the larger corner booths, but if the waitress was ready for us to get out already, she never indicated it. She was super-friendly and always smiling. The menu was surprisingly large for a family diner, and the portions were extremely generous. My grilled chicken salad was absolutely enormous, everything tasted fresh, I would definitely go back!

The place is very clean and we had great service. The waitresses were very attentive and the food came out within 10 minutes. I had the breakfast wrap, lots of cheese and veggies. And my boyfriend had the strawberry French toast which he inhaled. Food was excellent, we'll be back
