So Moka has evolved into much more than a coffee shop. They are doing quite well as a restaurant (now with a full liquor license) - on the culinary experience scale they fit nicely someplace between the dress-up/special event feeling of LuLu's and the hunters/boaters grunge of the Bellaire Bar, (all on the same street). Their pizza is quite popular and good. The wine shop is a very special thing to have in this area. In the morning, the standout items are the pastries - many of them very good, and a couple that are great. I had a donut fresh from the fryer that KNOCKED ME OUT! I haven't had a donut that good in over a year. However, at the same seating, my wife had a raspberry strudel that wasn't worth finishing. The weak point, for me, continues to be the coffee. While certainly the best around, they don't seem to be able to draw counter help that is cognizant of how decent coffee is prepared. This of course leads to a very irregular experience. Occasionally good, it's more often pretty bad. This morning my wife had a single skim latte and I had a double cappuccino. I won't rattle on about the subjective issues, but the bottom line was neither one of us could taste ANY difference between the two. (Maybe you have to know us to appreciate that - but ask the owners of Zingerman's Coffee, Comet Coffee, or Blue Bottle Coffee if you want a reference). I don't want to harp like an out-of-town effete, and I plan to go back here often, but I also don't want to be dishonest and say this is great coffee when it's not. It is, however, the best available within at an hour's drive. The owners and people behind the counter are great - this is a real solid local's spot - everyone knows everyone and this is a good spot to great your neighbor.

Went on a mini-shopping trip in Bellaire with my niece on a Tuesday morning and we decided to have lunch before going home. She wanted to sit outside, so we opted for Moka. I had the turkey cobb sandwich, which was hearty and terrific with a side of potato salad that was unlike anything I'd had before, seemed to have toasted onions - just very, very tasty. She had the chicken salad with walnuts and dried cherries and some kind of dressing that was excellent, with the cucumber/onion side that was also good. Both sandwiches had good, honest meat, not the salty, deli style kind. Service was friendly and initially prompt, but we were surprised by how long it took (about 20 minutes) to be served our cold sandwiches. But we'd both go back in a second. Would like to go back in the evening and try a pizza and sample some local wine or beer.

A cool little place in a cool little town. I got a coffee that was really good. Wife got a mocha that was amazing. They have gigantic cookies. I didnt get any cookies but they looked good. There is a neat little lounge in the back that plays really cool music. This was the only time I have been to Bellaire, MI. It was a fancy/cool little town. If you like Bellaire I think you will like Moka.

Recommended by friends of ours in the area, we were excited to check out this local gem during our time in Northern Michigan. Our first experience with the restaurant was when a young man ran out of the restaurant and chased us down the block to inform us that we had made an illegal turn out of the parking lot. Not being from the area, I didn't realize that I had missed the "no right turn" sign and I felt like Gomer Pyle was yelling "citizen's arrest, citizen's arrest!!!" at me in the middle of Mayberry. After we entered the restaurant, he approached us again to tell us that we broke the law and was told by staff to leave us alone. We ordered the French dip and the chicken salad sandwich. The French dip was served on ciabatta bread that was fresh and crunchy... perfect for dipping in the au jus. The chicken salad had dried cherries and pecans (or walnuts?)... which would have been enough, but the bread was also smeared with a cherry preserve of some sort that was just a bit too much. I ate half of it and thought I would finish the leftovers later, but ended up throwing it away because it was just too tart. All in all, Moka is a sweet little bistro in a pretty town that I would try again if we were passing through... just don't turn right from their parking lot on Main Street!!

One of my favorite up north spots! Love the coffee and Orange Cranberry Bar! So delicious! They have a cute wine bar in the back that is easy to miss. Also, a great burger at dinner time! Cute outdoor patio too!

Horribly slow service both times I have tried this place--average food, but waiting over an hour for a basic sandwich? I will not be returning.

This is the perfect place to go for coffee on a snowy evening. Have a pastry, borrow their Would You Rather book and play.

Pretty good lattes. A nice atmosphere, with plenty of seating. They had a nice selection of baked goods and the lunch items sounded great too. During my visit to Torch Lake, I came to this place at least three times. Great location on a corner in sleepy (but central) Bellaire.

Love Moka! Great staff and hot, fresh coffee. I am dying to try their quiche! Great to have something like this in Bellaire. Love the outdoor seating.

I've been for breakfast only on several occasions while vacationing. The coffee drinks and pastries are excellent. The docor is charming. The service has always been top notch.

Very cute place, great coffee and eats, poorly managed. I was here July 5th around 9am and 2 people at the counter is just poor planning and again, poor management. It's probably the biggest weekend up here!! And I hate to add to it but 2 errors out of 3 customers in a row is pretty bad.

My friend and I went to Moka for lunch when we went to her family's farm in Bellaire, and I have already told her we have to go back next time! I agree with everyone else who said it takes an absurdly long amount of time to get your food, and my friend's soup was lukewarm by the time it was served (mine was fine), but it was so worth the wait. (My friend agrees- they warmed up the soup when she asked, so there were no problems.) I ordered a Caesar salad and the chicken tortilla soup, and both were outstanding. The Caesar dressing was the best I've ever had, and I have eaten many Caesar salads. I also took a chance on the soup- I love chicken tortilla soup, but hesitate to order it because I am really picky and don't like a lot of things in my soup (not to mention I don't like onions, tomatoes, corn, or peppers of any kind). However, this soup was a HUGE success! It was simple and perfect, with a lot of shredded chicken, and the toppings on the side! I loved that I was able to add the cheese but leave out the other ingredients- ALL restaurants need to do that! This food is well worth the wait- everything is clearly made in house. I can't wait to go back.

I was so surprised to find this little gem on M-88 in Bellaire. With spacious seating options both inside and outside, a rich menu of good dining options, above-par baked goods, and an excellent coffee/espresso bar, Moka is disproportionately awesome for what you'd expect in a sleepy little town in the upper Lower Peninsula. Absoutely worht stopping through, as this place unassumingly provides high-quality and city-like coffee options.

For a 16 oz mocha with almond milk, they up charge $2.50!! So, because I'm lactose intolerant, they almost DOUBLE the price? They have obviously surprised other customers with this because the baristas were nonplussed at our surprise.

Delicious place for a quick breakfast stop. Had a raspberry Danish and my husband had a bagel and cream cheese. We both liked the good! Coffee was great as well. Will definitely come again to try lunch if I am around again soon!

I love the wine selection in the back and the fact that they'll open up the bottle for you. I also love the patio with a view of the comings and goings in town. Our food was pretty good--a selection of dips. The hummus was kind of thick and really garlic-y. Like wow, overpowering garlic. The black bean and corn salsa and the spinach artichoke dip were delicious! Some tables nearby had some pizzas that looked and smelled really good.

The food is mostly good. The Almond Moka Coffee is a favorite but the hot chocolate and chai latte needs a lot of work. However, the service is horribly slow. Don't go in unless you have one hour + to wait for a bowl of soup. Many times I have been in there and the cook brings my food out and sits it on top of the dessert case and it sits there for an awfully long time before it is even noticed and brought over. In most instances, the soup has become cold. So much better if only they could speed it up a little bit.

It was a cold and snowy night on our Shanty Creek President's Day skiing trip. We were all a little tired after skiing all day and wanted a quiet friendly place to have a relaxing casual dinner. We found it at the hip Moka. It's a cute little coffee shop with a great menu of specialty pizza's. The bonus here is a great selection of local beer and wine. The wine is sold at retail price which is a nice cost saving. The service was cheerful and helpful. I had the Henry VIII meat pizza and a micro brew, my wife had the goat cheese pizza and Cabernet and the girls got the pasta with a Stewart's Cherries and Cream. Not a lot of tables here but I got the feeling that we could have sat all night and they wouldn't have cared. When we arrived there was a young couple in the corner on their laptop using the free Wi-Fi and a group of four that turned out to be a young married couple and his parents from a hundred miles east who just came over for the weekend. That's the kind of town this is and Moka is the cool coffee shop. The truly cool thing is that Moka is not too cool to have families, young couples hanging out and grandparents all sitting around together. mokabellaire.com

I give this place two stars only because their pastry selection was disappointing, and what they did have did not even look good. They had some bottles of wine that ranged in price from 11-90 dollars, and none of it even looked worth buying. We did not purchase coffee or food or anything, but based on what we saw and how un-friendly the girl was behind the counter, (barely acknowledged or spoke to us at all, did not greet us when walking in), I give this place only two stars. I may return to try the coffee or lunch selections if I'm in the area again, but I highly doubt it simply due to the un-welcoming atmosphere of the staff.

We look forward to visiting Moka while in the area . . always purchase their coffee for at home consumption . . appreciate their sandwiches, breakfast "puffs" and pastries. Only complaint . . . s l o w service . . and not all that organized. Foklks . . you've been around since 2008 . . . you should have it together!

The food saves this place, and I hate writing a bad review when the food is so good, but the front of the house could really improve their attitudes! I know you're working, but I'm on vacation!! The first time we went in, the counter staff behaved as if it was inconvenient for her to wait on us and for me to make up my mind about what to eat. The quiche was delicious and the beets on the Greek salad were fresh, not canned. Lots of baked goods to choose from, but stay away from the prepared coffee drinks if you're into quality coffee. Not even Starbucks standard, and I consider that the minimal acceptable. If I could just get a decent latte up north, vacation would be complete. I've been spoiled by the terrific places in Detroit and elsewhere. I'm going to have to start traveling with a French Press...YES I'm a coffee snob!

Very cute restaurant and it's the perfect place to go for a quieter night in Bellaire. Quick service and open for breakfast lunch and dinner. When you first get there, your greeted by a friendly staff member at the register and order your meal there. For breakfast, they have a wide selection including their bakery section that has different types of muffins, quiche, pastries, pies, cookies, cakes, etc., which if I'm not mistaken, is able to be ordered throughout the day. For lunch and dinner, they have a great selection of soups, salads, pizza (so so good), and sandwiches. Very calm, relaxed and nice atmosphere. Food is fast and fresh with a great wait staff and very friendly owners. They make the great coffee and smoothies too! Not to mention the BEST Ruben fries in the world - French fries topped and melted with swiss cheese, sauerkraut, pastrami and Russian dressing on the side - YUM!

I went to Moka last week and was really impressed! First of all - I live in Washington DC and am up here a lot visiting family at Torch Lake so I needed a place with high speed internet (free) and this was provided at Moka so I decided to hop in my car and get some work done. I was initially annoyed at my fellow yelpers as I'd actually had some hesitation going there thinking it might be really crowded (as I'd heard it was quite small) - well they have at least 15-20 tables inside plus a bunch more outside. I think you can almost always get a table. It isn't the tiny shop I thought it might be! I got an iced coffee - the server wasn't the greatest I must admit, but she was prob 16-18 chatting with her friend. She did a fine job getting my coffee, but I think they should limit the employee chit chat and make them smile more at customers. The food looked great! Cupcakes/cakes/pastries/soups/salads/pizza - if I hadn't been on a diet I would have eaten it all! Seriously great looking food! I think anyone can come here - I'd say if you're old and haven't been out in 60 years or if you're a young gay guy (or gal) or even the prom queen (do they have that in Bellaire?) you would feel comfortable here. It seems like a nice cool, liberal and accepting place. Great addition to the Traverse City/Torch Lake area and I'll be back for sure when I'm up here!

Coffees, steamers, specialty drinks, breakfast pastries, lunch sandwiches, specialty pizzas, and wine. Moka's seems to be THE hip "coffee shop" place to go in Bellaire. I don't have much to say (for once), simply because I didn't get the opportunity to try the pizza (those these other reviewers are making me wish I had!) or the sandwiches. The coffee my party had was excellent. And the specialty tea steamer I had was fantastic. They even used high quality soymilk. I'd go again, that's for sure! PS: (They offer free wi-fi)

Terrific coffee, delightful food -BUT SO NOT WORTH THE WAIT! The specialties of the highly skilled kitchen are spoiled by the inattentive staff. The morning counter staff is not trained to manage more than the regulars. If you go in the morning be prepared to be delayed over 30 minutes & possibly even treated rudely. The afternoon staff is tremendous. But you should call ahead for their delicious gourmet pizzas. Even with a light crowd expect a wait over 30 minutes once you order.

Their wine buyer is fantastic. Don't forget to peak in the back room for an incredible selection.

Moka is such a great addition to downtown Bellaire! Monday morning the coffee maker broke so my husband, dad and I headed to Moka for coffees. As always they had a case full of homemade bakery deliciousness awaiting us as well. My husband and I each got a chorizo, egg and jack in a pastry puff...yum, yum, yum! I usually get a medium roast coffee (which my husband not a big coffee drinker raves about) but I decided to try a skinny vanilla latte and that was fabulous as well. The evening before we had been in town for ice cream and walked down for coffees and they were serving dinner (and the specials sounded fabulous!)- I hope to try in the near future. The also have a little wine shop off the back which had a good selection of wines at reasonable prices.

We stopped in here for coffee and a bite to eat on a Sunday morning. The counter staff was very friendly and the coffee was great. I had the breakfast burrito. I was expecting it to be mediocre, but it was actually very good. The place is comfortable and worth visiting. See you on ski weekend 2010!

New coffee shop in Bellaire! Hooray! It's more of a deli/coffee shop and that is a really good thing. It's new, it's hip, it is not your usual dumb Bellaire food place. It is like someplace you'd find in a more urban environment. They make good coffee drinks (just a little bit slow making them though... hopefully that will improve as they learn how the machines work), sell bottled wine, sandwiches, cheeses, etc. For summer it has a little patio area too! Good place. Go there!!
