Dockside is about the setting, especially in the middle of a Michigan summer. The food is pretty good, not great. The water tastes like it has waaay too much iron, but the ambiance is awesome. It's just so calm and inviting, with seating indoor and out. (We sat outside at the picnic tables.) When you are spending a great time at Torch Lake with great friends, it's important to eat while you drink. Stay hydrated. Watch others who are also on vacation, as well as the locals. It would get five stars if the menu was better and the water didn't taste like something out of a Stephen King novel, but it's a must stop in Northern Michigan!

I had tje quesadilla....awesome. get a side of guacamole with it. My companions had burgers that were delicious. Substitute onion rings or sweet potato chips for fries. The best part was the service. Kasey brought me a cold beer and a great meal in a speedy and professional manner. I'll be back!

Yes, there are probably places with a little better food....maybe even better service. But sitting on the shores of beautiful Torch Lake makes up for any possible shortcoming you'll find. But none were found on this trip... This was our third trip to The Dockside, and the best one yet. We got there about 1:30pm on a sunny, beautiful Friday (80 degrees) as we were driving up to Boyne City for a boating event. Got an awesome seat on the west side of the deck, so we had a perfect view of the lake. The place was very busy, but the service was excellent nonetheless--our smiling servers were prompt and very helpful. I enjoyed a couple mugs of Short's excellent Bellaire Brown, which went down smoothly. I was famished, so ordered up a smoked chicken Quesadilla--absolutely first class. The wife got some humus and chips, and she said it was some of the best humus she's had. There's nothing like sitting by the water, watching the boats go by...and this is a great place to do it. The channel from Torch Lake into Clam Lake runs right by the restaurant, so you can enjoy a relaxing parade of powerboats strolling past. Of course, some pull over to dock--like the sharp 29' Fountain offshore speedboat that rolled up right after we sat down. Nice. I've never been here on a weekend night during the summer; I imagine the place gets pretty nuts later at night--when the refugees from the Torch Lake sand bar find there way here. So on this trip, The Dockside gets 5 stars. This part of MI gets better and better; I've been coming up here for 50 years, and I can remember when the building that houses The Dockside was an IGA grocery store, and the little frame building next door was a Pancake House. Dined on a Friday evening for the fish fry. Busy, could tell it would take a while to get your food. 35 minutes after taking our order the food came out. Nothing to rave about, grade C, kind of goes w the price of $12.00. Had to flag wait staff down for a second round of beers. Received bill and they charge for ice tea refills! Should have had her drink beer, would have been cheaper!

This was such a fun, casual night. Think bench seating, pitchers of beer, and greasy grub. I loved it. Kid-friendly, patient wait staff, amazing burgers.

This is a fun place to take people and they are always busy on Thursday with the burger special. It is noisey so conversations are sometimes difficult.

We had a great time yesterday at the Dockside! The food was good. I had the perch sandwich with fries (which were eerily reminiscent of Ore Ida crinkle fries...), hubby enjoyed a wrap sandwich, and the kids barely made a dent in their grilled cheese and hot dog (not the Dockside's fault - they were already worn out from the boat ride!). As others have stated, it was all about hanging out on the deck in the sun to eat. The staff were all festively attired in red, white and blue too. Luckily I didn't have to change a diaper at this stop, but the women's rest room door did indicate the availability of a changing table. IMHO, they should get one in the men's too, so mama can get a break sometimes ;)

We travel up to the Dockside every chance we get! I enjoy sitting outside and watching the boats go by or pull up. Fried pickles are great, only have tried a few sandwhices. Have not had a bad experience yet! The weekends in the summer do get a little crazy, but it's fun.

What is better than driving the boat through Torch Lake mid-afternoon to eat at a yummy American-style restaurant? Always such a treat to dine at Dockside. Great for people watching... and boat watching for those of you who are into that. The food is GREAT. But then again, I hardly ever complain about food. :) Been coming here for years & I am happy to see it still doing well!

Had the Perch tacos, nicely made with a slaw. Great view of the water with outside seating. Inside has some games for passing time. Excellent service. Onion rings are thin and crispy, sweet potato fries come with a chipotle dipping sauce that has a lot of flavor. Great place!

You're up in the woods next to a lake, sun shining hot and the water waving coolness.... Cold beers, fried goodness and smiley servers. Could you want anything more? Just no wake your way up to the dock or drive on down and enjoy the warmth this place resonates. Do iT!

Food is alright. Not a place I would go to in the winter but it is a fun place to dock your boat and get a bite to eat on Torch lake. Great view of the lake and fun to watch the boats go by (definitely get outside seating if available).

Went there for a good fish fry. Didn't get it. Worse ever. Mostly breading with fish cartilage. Gross. Four of us couldn't eat. Got blt as replacements. Lots of little bits of bacon. Noted every little thing extra. Want lettuce $.39. No potato chips with sandwiches. Taco chips want salsa or guacamole extra. They nickel and dime you.

I'm not kidding when I say it's not summer until you've been to The Dockside. This is northern Michigan fare at its finest; the menu isn't as limited as your standard variety bar food, but it isn't as complex as some higher-end restaurants either. They also have a fully stocked bar, so you're covered no matter what beverage you're craving to beat the heat. I'll tell you right now though, it's not the food that will bring you back to this place time and time again. There is nothing quite like sitting on the outside deck at The Dockside on a warm summer day, drinking a cold beer and watching boats motor past on the channel to and from Torch Lake. The fact that this place sits right on Torch Lake should sell you right off the bat; add cold beer and juicy burgers, you should be getting in your car (or boat) and heading there NOW. In their off season they have Thirsty Thursdays, awesome specials on beer and burgers. Check them out, I promise you'll be planning your next visit before you even leave.

Cheap drinks and greasy bar food at it's best. For me, sitting outside in the daytime is the way to do it! At night, there are too many spiders hanging from the awning, and I'm a bit of a baby when it comes to visiting the Dockside at night, during the summer, because of that. Stupid, I realize, but traumatizing none-the-less. This place gets insanely busy during peak hours, so either come early, or be prepared to wait (especially for the patio).

    (4)
  • Christine F.

Every lake town has one of these places. It's on the water. They serve classic, American food that just isn't complete without a fish fry. All the waitresses are wearing daisy dukes. There's definitely a nautical theme going on. This sums up the Dockside perfectly. We went here on a Friday night with about 5 members of my extended family. The wait for a table (for a party of 7) outside was going to be 45 minutes, so we opted to eat inside. We started with fried pickles (the pickles are fried with swiss and ham) and an order of chips and salsa. I've never had fried pickles like that before, so that was interesting. The chips and salsa were....chips and salsa. I'm not sure how else to describe that. For my main, I got a cobb salad with turkey, bacon and avocado over romaine. The food was OK. Nothing was particularly spectacular, but it sufficed. The service was good. Get here early - it can get packed later on!

What can I say it was Thursday and we were thirsty. I was informed that the Dockside was having it's last Thirsty Thursday of the season this evening, whether or not this was the case was not confirmed, nor does it matter at this time. $2 burgers, $2 draughts and various discounts on various menu items, what more can be said. The place was packed. We were able to get some drinks from the bar, no ID or CC needed to open the tab, that kind of trusting is shocking to me (I am a bit cynical as those that know me will agree). After a 30 minute wait or so, we were seated outside, we could have been seated inside in some 5 minutes or so, but honestly sitting outside was worth the wait, though I wish I had brought my sun glasses, I wasn't prepared for my seat to be facing into the setting sun. After downing my 12oz mug of Labatt Blue (I don't like holding onto stuff), I took a walk down the board walk, looking for a dock board that my Father-in-Law's neighbor had purchased many a year ago, the dock boards you see have various names or phrases carved into them. Just about every board is carved and those that don't appear to be carved are well, very old and the carving has faded, the board has been hit by the surf and the sun and the rain so much, that the surface of the board has lost almost all signs of the about 1/8 inch carved letters that make for an interesting walk out out into torch lake (not a far walk into torch, but a decent sized dock). There were probably about 5 boats parked there, I was informed that during the summer, the boats will be parked far down the canal/river to the likes that I would be amazed. I never did find the board, maybe next year. For me, the food was OK. If it was closer to the cottage, I could see going on Thursdays for a couple of beers and likely a couple of burgers. The burger was nothing to write home about the dinner salad I ordered (none appeared on the menu) was an interesting mix of mostly iceberg with onion some quartered sliced tomatoes (burger tomatoes) and a hint of romain or possibly green leaf lettuce. The lettuce was fresh. I almost ordered their Sunset Salad (I love a salad that comes with dried cherries and pecans), but I wasn't in the mood for chicken, even though we had burgers the night before, I was in the mood for some red meat and the idea of ordering Mexican food in Michigan in general is laughable, let alone at a place called the dockside. Don't get me wrong, I am really biased on my Mexican/Tex-Mex cuisine these days, it is hard not to be, I have been living in Austin, TX for the last 15 years. I have ready access to some great Tex-Mex and some fantastic hole-in-the-wall Taquerias for some Authentic Jalisco style Mexican food. The Burritos that my Father-in-Law and neighbor ordered looked typical of burrito in the north, the burrito itself was very well constructed, tight roll and a good mix of lettuce, meat, beans inside. I commend them for that, but the 'sauce' (I would call it enchilada sauce, probably something like an Ortega Mild, based upon the color) was definitely from a can/jar. Again, I am biased, I am used to places that make their own salsa and guac. But both gentlemen enjoyed their burritos and I enjoyed my burger, I particularly liked that the waitress brought out this spinning serving tray of diced onions, salsa and jalapenos, I put quite a few jalapenos and onions on my cheese burger. I even found myself snacking on the pickled jalapenos, I hit a couple of spicy ones, but generally speaking that had that almost sweet taste that pickled jalapenos get. I had two 12oz mugs of Bellaire Brown during dinner, I do love that beer, so kudos again to the Dockside in supporting their local brewery. I was glad they had Labatt Blue (I can't get it on draught down south). The servers were friendly, the bar staff was great. My only comment would be that I was still a little hungry after the burger and salad, I would have ordered more, but it took so long for our food to come, I didn't want to risk holding up the group waiting for a thing of fries. It would have been nice for the waitress to ask me if I wanted fries with my burger (or onion rings), she had asked me if I wanted anything else with my burger, which I heard as 'on my burger' and all I could say was 'Mustard'. Little bit more salesmanship would have totally gotten me to order a side of something friend and delicious. However, with all of that said, nothing I saw or ate made me want to run back to this establishment, particularly with this being the last Thirsty Thursday and the idea that they are even BUSIER as summer progresses. I would be glad to come back next year or maybe in September after the summer crowd has gone back down state. Till then.

Great place, whether you drive in or boat in...the outside seating offers spectacular scenery on Torch Lake, and the burgers, fries, beer are all fantastic!!!

Crazy busy and packed to the gill on a Thursday night. Food was ok. If you can get on the deck you might give it 4 or 5 stars. Nothing fancy and I would expect more than cod nuggets for fish on the menu. Plenty of whitefish around that area and you are on a lake. You are here for the view, not the food. Very loud inside with TV's blaring. Plenty of games to keep the kids busy and quarters out of your pockets.

I've been going here for several years when I am in the area on vacation. I've always had a good experience and the food has always been delicious. This past visit I ordered the pulled pork sandwich which was excellent. My boyfriend ordered the fish tacos and loved them as well. Another favorite of mine is the artichoke chicken wrap. Definitely a must have! The atmosphere is also awesome being on one of the most beautiful lakes in the country.

There are three kinds of burger places: Plate, Basket, and Box. At a Plate Place, they will ask you how you want your burger prepared. At a Basket Place, they may ask how you want it, but will ignore whatever you say. At a Box Place, they don't even ask, because you are both clear that the terms of the contract mean you are lucky to get anything. Dockside is a Box Burger Place, although they try to confuse the issue by serving burgers in baskets inside. (Like the plastic baskets are too good to risk on the porch). Expect little, go away satisfied. After or during a hot day on the water, a very basic cheeseburger can be ideal. Combine that with a local Michigan beer, and things are A-OK.

Love the Dockside. It has a great, classic lake ambience. Not for foodies, this is good old American bar food, but you can't beat the location on beautiful Torch Lake.

The Dockside is an awesome spot. While the food isn't fabulous, the beer is cold and the locale is fabulous. There is nothing better than this spot nestled on a peninsula right were Clam river meets Torch Lake. I would ride with my friend on a boat through the chain of lakes to park the boat at the Dockside and hang out. For a city girl like me it is unbelievably idyllic and all my memories of the Dockside are filled with sunny days, turquoise water, and jalapeno poppers on the porch.

My wife and I went here 7/15/12 around 4PM. The place was about two-thirds full. We sat at the bar with only 2 other patrons. After no one had served, or even spoken to us in 5 minutes we left. With so many other options in the area, we will not be wasting our time coming back here.

We went during lunch which wasn't crowded at all. Food was awesome and so was the service (Thanks Megan!!). Definitely a place to eat at.

My family/relatives used to rent summer property just across Clam River from the Dockside, so I admit to have nostalgia involved in my assessment. Dockside is a lively bar and grill with tie-ups for boats coming and going from Torch Lake via Clam River. Outside seating, beautiful view of the river and lake - service can be spotty, as the place can get very crowded. The usual burger and Mexican suspects, but also a little better and broader variety than most. The food is a step up from the usual bar food. Good choice in the area.

On a beautiful summer evening as the sun sets in Northern Michigan on Torch Lake, the Dockside is "Cheeseburger in Paradise". If you go you must sit outside, sitting inside is not an option for a true DS experience. The Dockburger is amazing and more than a mouthful. You might need a fork as it tends to fall apart about half way through. The crinkle cut fries are the perfect pair. Ive also had the burrito and its very good. My brother ordered the fish special and was disappointed...a little dry. Servers are mostly college kids who enjoy their work and each other. They work hard, provide good service, and have fun. Shout out to Leah who took good care of us! A product of Grand Valley State if i remember corrrectly. I would also recommend the t-shirts...fun summer designs that make you relaxed just wearing them. As others have posted, don't go for the food alone, go for the experience to relax on the deck and enjoy time with friends and family.

I LOVE The Dockside. Like Myrna, it's been an annual tradition for our family (and four others) for the past 17 years. The food is good but standard American / Up North cooking. But you don't go for the food (or even the beer). The location and huge, sunny deck is what makes it great. Getting in your boat for a day on the lake, maybe visiting the sandbar or up the Clam River, and then pulling up and eating at The Dockside. It's the perfect Up North summer memory/tradition. The planks of the entire dock have inscriptions from different people/events (I assume you can buy them and have them engraved for a fee). What jogged my memory to write this review was the shuffleboard in another bar in DC this weekend. The only other bar I've been to that has one is The Dockside. I can't wait to go back and have a mini-tournament or play some old arcade games or pinball.

Love how this place is right on the water. Good bar food & cold beers on the porch overlooking the lake makes for a great afternoon. ( I would definitely ask for a table outside, the inside is a total dive.)

It was really nice being able to eat dinner right on the porch next to the water I came on a Friday so I was able to have the friday fish fry which was good.

Lash up the boat and let the cold pitchers flow, frozen mugs, a sun drenched deck and the most incredible blue waters ... life is good. This is a great spot to come with a group, sit back, relax and take it all in, the view, the people and the brew. I can't say much for the food as majority of the apps are deep fried, burgers, wraps and a few salads make up the remainder of the menu - but that's not why you came.

Had an excellent Bacon Cheeseburger. The Oberon washes it done perfectly. The onion rings were a little too heavy on the beading.

It's summer, you're on your boat or have been hanging out at the cottage for hours . . . just can't cook. Well, this is it. It's a tradition in our family to go there. The food is typical, nothing special, burgers, wraps, etc. They do have a bar and a few pinball type machines and small pool table inside. But best place to sit is outside on the deck where you can watch the sun set over Torch Lake, or if it's day time see new boaters not be able to get off the boat to come into the place. It's located right on Torch Lake, East side between Alden and Bellaire just off East Torch Lake Drive. It's right at Clam River. Go for fun, not for the food, go to hang, get some sun and laugh with friends and family.

Everything is good here but the burgers are amazing. Thick and juicy with a really soft, fresh bun. Get the onion rings, too. Atmosphere is also perfect - folks hanging out on the patio looking at Torch Lake and watching boats coming in and out of the little harbor, Detroit sports on the TVs, homemade ceiling tiles designed by loyal customers.

Till then.

We travel up to the Dockside every chance we get! I enjoy sitting outside and watching the boats go by or pull up. Fried pickles are great, only have tried a few sandwhices. Have not had a bad experience yet! The weekends in the summer do get a little crazy, but it's fun.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
