I was amazed to find a place like this in Alpena. The décor is a little scattered when you walk in, but there's some great seating in the far dining area with a view of the lake. I went with a coworker who had been to the restaurant before and recommended it highly. He was absolutely right. We started with the calamari which was served with a spicy / creamy remoulade. I liked this much better than the standard marinara. For my meal, I had the gorgonzola chicken with parmesan risotto. Good god. It was lovely - decadent, cheesy, and probably more calories than I'd ever want to know about. A great choice for Alpena or... anywhere.

This place is so nice that I returned again the first night I came back to Alpena. The food is made with all fresh ingredients and the menu is very unique. They also have a nice beer selection. Ashleen enhanced my dining experience during both visits. She is polite, attentive, interesting and lovely. She is also knowledgeable of the menu and honest about it. This restaurant should be the first when visiting Alpena.

Day/time of visit: weekday dinner Atmosphere: dark, cozy, rustic, arts n' craftsy I love a good dark restaurant! The decor is very Etsy - mixed tables/seating, every table has a different tablecloth (some are embroidered dishtowels), low hanging velvet lampshades, chandeliers, etc. Some of the seating areas are a little claustrophobic so take a look around and ask to sit at a comfortable table if there are any open - this place was hopping on a weekday evening in late summer. On to the food... I ordered Parmesan Encrusted Chicken with linguine and a roasted red pepper, pancetta, and smoked Gouda sauce. The chicken was perfectly prepared and had a lovely crispy crust but a little under-seasoned. The pasta tasted homemade (I think they make it on site, but don't quote me) but I found the sauce to be flavorless - disappointing and would not recommend. The BF ordered Trotter Steak - medallions topped with sautéed spinach and Madeira infused mushrooms sitting atop a bed of matchstick sweet potato fries. The combo made for perfect bites. Still not sure what cut Trotter steak is (the waitress said top sirloin) but it was perfectly prepared and tasted like filet mignon. This entree is awesome, highly recommend! Accompanying our entrees were fresh side salads with homemade ranch dressing and the most awesome homemade dense sourdough bread with a slather of garlic butter. The bread is amazing! Even though their desserts are not made on site, we ordered a slice of Red Velvet cake to go. The cake was more like a cheesecake with a layer of Red Velvet cake and chocolate wafer crust - very interesting. Service was a bit slow but the waitress was friendly. Great value for the quality of food (less than $20 per entree). While some aspects of this restaurant do not merit a 5 star rating (Parmesan Encrusted Chicken, claustrophobic seating, lack of desserts made on site), it's impressive that this restaurant exists in Alpena. I love that they have an herb and veggie garden surrounded by happy sunflowers on the property. Will definitely be back!

Cool stone exterior inside is nicely decorated they had a couple Michigan craft brews on tap I like the support local thing. Vegetable steak soup was very good. For being so far from ocean Shrimp & scallops were delicious. Garlic bread fresh made hot & crisp was really great. Service was fast and very attentive up to getting our meal then they disappeared had to walk up to bar for a drink refill bit disappointed as all was good to that point.

I just ate the best prime rib ever. This is worth the stop. Truly the best I have had. Supper club-like rustic atmosphere. Great bar area; yet good for families. Christina is friendly and attentive, and the ladies are all attractive. A nice place here in northeast Michigan.

This place is awesome, I'm in Alpena on a somewhat consistent basis and have never stopped here until today. Boy am I glad I did, the food was amazing. Tons of choice and everything my wife and I ordered was great. My only regret is that I couldn't eat more of the large portions they provided. Hint: The Prime Rib was among the best I've ever had.

Had a great night of service, food and music last night. Service was regular and responsive without being overbearing. I had the black bean chili which was really good along with the Parmesan Crusted Chicken which was very good. Plus they had live entertainment which was also outstanding. Friendly and happy place with great food and good service.

This is one amazing restaurant. Alpena is certainly not Chicago, but the chef clearly has been well trained. Salads, apps were great. One of their entrees is trotter steak. Not exactly sure what it is, but it is wonderful perfectly cooked for two of us who specified rare and very, very rare. Perfect. Pan sautéed perch was PERFECTLY done. Great spot.

Courtyard has the best laid back atmosphere and amazing food. Don't miss the signature garlic bread dipped in ranch. The Tuna Poke and Prime Rib are superior to your downstate restaurants. Owners Chris and Lora Carlson treat you like family. If you're traveling US-23 North make it a priority to stop in.

For good casual dining you can't beat this place. I wouldn't say it's "fit for foodies" but if you are hungry and find yourself in Alpena, this is the place to go!

If you're a foodie and you find yourself in Alpena, MI...this is it! Fantastic chef with an interesting menu. Good fresh (and many local!) ingredients, quality fish, and interesting and inventive dishes. The atmosphere is stellar as long as you sit in the 'old part' (if they try and sit you up in the 'new room with a view' ask to be seated elsewhere). The bar is an amazing spot to hang out (it's been around since the 1940s) and it screams atmosphere. We go here everytime we hit Alpena now and consider it the only place to get 'real food' anywhere within 50 miles.

Excellent food! Great friendly service! Fun atmosphere!! When entering, I was delighted by the eclectic decor..fun beads from chandeliers, colorful scarves tying back the curtain room separators, and eating areas tucked away throughout. We sat by the window, enjoying the fall day. Now the food!! So fresh, flavorful, and unique! We started with a seasonal flatbread with squash, cherries, bacon...and a maple syrup drizzle. How's that for different?! The flat bread itself was crunchy and tasty, but the toppings made it sing. For dinner, I walked in, expecting to order prime rib, but decided instead to try one of their seasonal entrees, something I couldn't get anywhere else... almond encrusted chicken over risotto with brussel sprouts and all kinds of good stuff. It was all topped with a slice of Apple thyme butter, which melted onto the chicken before my eyes. The almonds on the chicken were crunchy and gave the moist chicken a smoky flavor. The risotto was very creamy and delicious, but the brussel sprouts were my favorite part...little treasures nestled in goodness! My husband tried their special of the day which was all kinds of delicious with pasta, turkey, and peppers. He loved it so much, he kept eating even when he was full, could not stand to leave any of it behind. I myself am looking forward to risotto leftovers at midnight. I will be going back soon to try more...maybe the prime rib!

One of the better restaurants in Alpena! I love the old school vibe in this place. The bar is awesome too. I ordered a blue cheese crusted salmon-to die for! perfectly cooked. I have never had a bad meal at this place. Also lots of good micro-brews up in here!

The food and service are amazing. I don't sit in the restaurant area often. I love the atmosphere of the bar area best.

The lowdown: Intimate nooks versus open spaces complimented the heart of the menu that doesnt try to be bigger than the location (or city) it is in. Very fresh options and quality innovations with poultry and seafood items that were not masked in oils or excessive amounts of spice. The story: Over the Labor Day Weekend 2013, my girlfriend and I decided we needed a getaway and chose to explore the "sunrise side" of the lower peninsula. After moving at a snails pace up US-23 from Tawas City to Alpena and beyond, we found this restaurant based on prior reviews and recommendations from various locals we encountered. While it is definitely not off a busy road, the signage wasnt the easiest to spot from the car. Inside we were greeted instantly with that lost Northern Michigan nostalgia thats most often found in locations that dont just cater to the travelers, vacationers or business people and has the sense that its supposed to be the experience over the dollar sign. Get: Try one of the specials and if a seafood appetizer - mussels are the right choice that wont be overly filling or a let down

Stopped by a few years ago for dinner and was impressed not only with the service, but the food quality and creativity-which is far superior to any restaurant in this part of the state. Any time I'm north of Tawas, a visit to the Court Yard will be planned. The owners make their presence known and will do anything within reason to insure you are happy with your dining experience. They have literally travelled the world looking for new dishes to serve and the menu changes accordingly-always some nice surprises being added. There are cheaper places to eat in Alpena, but if you want a quality meal served by an attentive waitstaff, this is your place. One of only a few places in Michigan that get my 5 stars.

Ate here for dinner on a weekend trip to Alpena - Picked the restaurant based off the Yelp rating and it didnt disappoint. Good salads, asparagus flatbread was tasty, i went with pizza which was good and my wife enjoyed her chicken salad. We were pleasantly surprised be the total on the bill. If we lived there, we would be back for sure. Only recommendation would be put more signage on the outside. We drove past it a couple times and almost gave up looking.

Outstanding service and food! I travel all over the world and this place can hold their own with anyone. The chef has specials everyday and they constantly change up the menu. From the bread to the main course, this place will not disappoint.

Showed up with a group of like 60 Air Guard members. They fit us all in a side room and I have to say, did a great job. Calamari had a great, peppery/spicy sauce (considering distance from ocean was very good) and drinks were quite good. Food wasn't amazing for a big city, but for Alpena it was excellent and the prices were very fair. Overall a win!

My wife and I were looking for culinary gems on our way down the east coast of the state doing a lighthouse tour, and we were absolutely blown away by this place. The owner Chris was a friendly, salt of the earth guy who greeted us at the door and seated us. He also checked back during our meal, which was fantastic. We were not extremely hungry so we decided to split a salad and an entree. We settled upon the wilted spinach salad and ravioli with pesto sauce. They were both excellently delivered, and it was obvious that the ravioli had been made fresh. We were blown away by how good everything was: we felt the love in every bite. After we ate, I spent some time talking to Chris, and it did not take long for me to realize that he is passionate about food. He and his wife travel every year looking for new dishes to add to their menu; definitely a foodie destination in northern Michigan!

This is fine dining in Alpena at reasonable prices! We ordered three different meals, each meal was perfection. The salads were so nice, not your plain jane lettuce and tomato, but with chick peas and red onion and so delicious. House made dressings. The special halibut stuffed with crab stuffing was so perfect and the risotto and sauce just right. Perch was plentiful and cooked to perfection, twice baked potato was beautiful. Swordfish special...out of this world and the sugar snap peas were done just right. The garlic bread is so delicious too. There was not ONE thing that was not perfection. This place knows how to cook and serve a meal. We were pleased. It is a place I make sure I visit when I am in town. Be sure to go there. My Dad's favorite used to be the prime rib, it is always perfect. You will NOT be disappointed in this fine restaurant. PLUS the owners make you feel like special customers on each visit.

Hate to be Debbie Downer. But...... after all we had heard about this place we gave it a shot. Let's just say the chicken was raw in the middle, no lie. Sent it back and was not much better. High prices for such a mistake (still frozen?) The owner did come to the table and try to smooth over the situation. Three stars for that. Too much money to have to be peering in the dark with a flashlight to see if the food is thoroughly cooked.

Food: The food was fantastic. My main dish was the duck. It tasted incredible and cooked perfectly to my tastes. My grandma had the regular steak and it was cooked like a medium-rare is supposed to be cooked. It was the first time she ever had medium-rare steak and she will now never have steak any other way! I had the featured salad along with the duck and it was nothing special except for added Apple wedges. For an appetizer we had crab dip with flat bread and tasted like it should, nothing too extraordinary. 4/5. Service: The service was wonderful. We had the manager wait on us as well as a trainee. They were very professional and kind. 5/5. Environment: The atmosphere was rather odd. I think it might be because the food and the bar made the restaurant seem fancy but at the same time it was a very casual restaurant. For example, they played the Beatles the whole time. Overall, it was a pretty good environment for a fancy restaurant in Alpena, MI. 4/5. Overall: It's definitely a place to stop at while in Alpena. The food is great and at a reasonable price. 4/5.

Best restaurant I've ever visited in Alpena. I don't know why I assumed it was going to be so expensive, it's really not. Food was excellent - definitely not your typical Alpena GFS recycles. We had salads and wine on a Friday night and were not disappointed. Will be one of the go-to's when we go back!

Located in central Alpena across from Lake Huron, this restaurant is a place we've been to a few times. The food is always great and the atmosphere is inviting and cozy. They have a varied menu with lots of choices. The garlic bread is tasty, like home made and the salad is made with their garden grown vegetables. I got chicken with garlic cream sauce. The portion was large, so I ended up taking half with me. Since it was the 4th of July, they had a live band and tables set up outside to watch the fireworks, which were going to happen that night at dusk. It was a festive atmosphere on a warm summer night. We'll definitely go back again!

The atmosphere is great, really cute and unique. The food was amazing. Our service was friendly, welcoming and really accommodating/warm. The music was good too; just background indie rock on a Sunday night. The muscles were soooo good we were licking the bowl and I ordered the wood plank white fish special which was amazing. The twice baked potato was sinfully good; oh and the side salad was surprisingly tasty with the simple olive oil and vinegar (which I accidentally got on the cute table cloth while excitedly pouring it, I'm so sorry!) We had a great date night!

This is one of my favorite restaurants to visit while in Alpena. After eating their food you will understand why they are so busy. I love the fact that they have a garden and that's where they pick their lettuce for salads. They have a big menu and everything I've tried has been great so far...planked whitefish, steak, and chicken gouda pasta.

Food and service- excellent. The menu has a variety of options from turf to surf and can accommodate a vegetarian. Their salads come in three sizes. The smallest, a side with your entree. Great idea. Michigan micro brews on tap. Yes- eat here.

I looked at the menu before I went so I knew what to expect. But honestly if I had just walked in and tried to guess what type of restaurant it was based on the look of the place, I wouldn't come anywhere close. I didn't know if I was in a quirky hipster bar, a French Bistro, a medieval castle where ether only serve massive turkey legs, or an Italian Villa. I think they were going for the last option, but the collection of multi-colored antique chandeliers hanging above each of the tables is what threw me off. It's a very eclectic place for sure. Give the prices, they are going for upscale Italian fare. But what confused me was how the staff were dressed. The host was dressed in a black shirt, black cargo shorts, and sneakers. But they charge $17.95 for chicken parmesan. Doesn't sound like it adds up, right? Anyways, the food was excellent and fresh. The portions were plentiful and the service attentive. The homemade garlic bread that was brought to the table was a nice addition I just couldn't get past how the staff were dressed though. If you're going to charge upscale prices, make the effort to present yourself as that. Even if it's just for show, make your customers feel as if their spending on dinner is justified. The hooting and hollering coming from the kitchen would also be categorized as unclasp, just in case that isn't clear. I give this restaurant four stars, mostly for the food (and probably because my judgement is still clouded but the significant amount of confusion this place brought me).

I was totally impressed with Sara she has excellent menu knowledge and can rattle off all 15 or so on tap beers and can adjust to your cuisine taste. She should be employee of the year. We will be back and i encourage you to ask for sara by name. She will not disappoint. Did i mention Sara.

Here for a week from Ohio. Eclectic atmosphere, started off with a delicious creamy, chunky sweet potatoe and parm soup, along with a basket of home made warm bread with a garlic, butter spread. Next course...the delectable, delicious, dreamy, halibut served over white truffle risotto, with a buerre blanc sauce. This meal is like "when Harry met Sally", "I'll have what she is having." My friend had the perch dinner, which had several pieces of perch on the plate, so much she had a doggie bag. Jody, our local server, was very sweet, conscientious and quick to please. STOP HERE for an unbelievable meal.

This place is top notch from the service to the food. Excellent selection of alcoholic beverages. The garlic bread served with every meal is the best garlic bread I've ever sunk my teeth into. I was there on a Thursday night and there was a live singer who played old school rock and sounded awesome. If you only have one spot to eat at while in Alpena this is it.
