How have I not written this yet?? The portions are the size of your head. If you want tomorrow's lunch as well, get a full. If just today's lunch (meaning you are well stuffed) get a half. The whoopie pies and cookies are honestly the size of a human head, but amazingly good. Quality onion rings, fries, and sweet potato fries. AVOID THE PASTA! CASH ONLY!!

Freshest bread for every sandwich. Don't live in the area anymore but any reason to be close to Winslow/Waterville gives reason to go to Big G's. Cash only but so worth it. A full sandwich is bigger than my face. So darn good. Always recommend the Thanksgiving sandwich to new comers!

Oh man. Best breakfast sandwich I've ever. Nice atmosphere, good service, and didn't even have to wait too long.

Wow! What a sandwich, what a place! Completely off the beaten path, and worth the meal and the experience. big sandwiches? Yes, my wife and I split a half a reuben. But on top of the size is the quality of the bread and the deli meat. All it is cracked up r'to be!

Big G's is an amazing place! They have been in business for a very long time and the quality hasn't changed much. The portions and unique combinations are amazing. I would give them a five star review, but those of us who have eaten at Big G's sine we were kids notice a few subtle changes that keep the review at four stars. My favorite bread to get a sandwich on used to be Marouk aka Saj. They changed that to lavish bread which was close, but still not the same. They then got rid of lavish and went to tortillas. Huge disappointment. They make most stuff in house. They could make a proper Marouk bread.

At Big G's, I have never encountered a meal that I did not enjoy. From pancakes, to sandwiches, to omelettes, to whoopie pies, everything is made to gigantic deliciousness. And when I say gigantic, I'm not exaggerating. The food is HUGE! Not that I'm complaining, because I can usually order one meal and turn it into breakfast and lunch. If you are looking for great brunch food in the Waterville/Winslow area, Big G's is the place to go. However, not only is the food amazing, but Big G's provides a perfect atmosphere for gathering with friends or acquaintances. Although it is usually pretty busy, the wait isn't very long and there are enough tables to accommodate. Every visit to Big G's is worthwhile and a great time. Hope you all enjoy!

Once in awhile I make it to this deli and I am always more than happy with the food. The sandwiches are made fresh and are about the size of someone's head. I was able to order one sandwich to feed 3 people. Also, all of the sandwiches have fun names. I have also tried their breakfast, french toast, which was made with their giant homemade bread. One could never go wrong with this place. Just so good.

Big G's, where everything is... well BIG! Everything, the menu, the portions, the size of the whoopie pies that wait for you as you approach the counter, the pancakes, the sandwiches. Everything is big. Due to the vast size of the menu, I've can only say I've sampled what they have to offer. But I've never been disappointed. Well maybe in myself for not being able to finish.

I was back at Big G's last week when I was in Maine for work. It was the first time I tried out their breakfast. Our group had a good selection of various omelets and pancakes. I enjoyed a greek omelet with spinach and feta cheese, along with a side of rye toast. While the others in my party were locals, they still sing the praises of Big G's. Though they all indicated that it's better to go during the week to avoid the crowds. After ordering and paying at the counter, we were given a pager that announced when our order was ready. For a party of five, it was quick; fewer than ten minutes passed before our meals were ready. After we picked them up, our group was silent for a bit as everyone dug in. My omelet was well prepared, and I'm still suprised at the quick cooking and getting everything ready at the same time. The eggs were cooked just right, not overdone, and the filling was flavorful. The homemade rye toast was soft and married well with the omelet. All of us either left food on our plates or took it as takeout for lunch. If you go hungry at Big G's, see your doctor about the possibility of a tape worm! Bus your own table at Big G's. It helps the flow of the restaurant, and I assume supports keeping the prices so low.

Big G's is for me! The sheer size of these Sandwiches and desert's is enough alone, but the ingredients and flavors push this place up to a 5 Star rating. The only complaint I (may) have is Big G's does not except Credit or Debit, but this just adds to the oddity that is "BIG G'S."

The food was really good. The portions were huge! The homemade bread was particularly enjoyable.

As big as your head? In fact true, but before I review I must say, bring cash or a check as cards will not play. CASH my friends, it is king, so bring plenty of it to pay for the treats. More sandwich's than you have ever seen, Big G's selection is divine. From vegetarian options to some rare roast beast, I had their sweet potato fries they couldn't be beat. For a night cap, to finish at home, spoil yourself with a big treat, get a whoopie pie that 20 people could eat!

Everything's bigger in... Maine?! It's difficult to strike that harmonious balance between quality and quantity. It feels like it's much easier to offer delicious food in too small an amount and too high a price or subpar food in too large an amount at low cast than it is enormous portions of f'awesome eats at a reasonable price. Get all that? Big G's is one of the best places in New England to get the most bang for your your buck. A full-sized sandwich (for under $10) is LITERALLY the same size as a college text book (meaning: ORDER THE HALF unless you want serious leftovers). if not BIGGER. Now - do me a favor - place both your hands in front of you and stretch your fingers out as far and hard as you can. The whoopie pies? STILL bigger than that. When my sister and I were in our early twenties, we used to LOVE Big G's. Whenever she and I could, we'd take the hour plus drive upta Winslow just to eat lunch there. Now that I'm a vegetarian (and live even farther away), I don't visit the wonderful place as much as I once did. But there were loads of sandwiches I used to love, like: - Gobblin Gourmet (chicken salad, cranberry sauce, lettuce, and cheddar) - This used to be one of my FAVORITE sandwiches in the entire state of Maine. If you like the flavors of Thanksgiving - but want it cold and more summery - THIS is the sandwich to get. I always got a full size, too! - Cindy Blodgett (hot turkey, swiss cheese, sprouts, and tomatoes) - Also a very, very tasty option. Who knew sprouts and turkey complimented each other so well? - Bullseye (roast beef, cream cheese, raw onions, and horseradish) - I went through this really disgusting phase of life where all I craved was roast beef, and this sandwich (even with the raw onions) was the #1 thing to satiate me! - Zorro (sprouts, avocado, salsa, melted mozzarella and swiss) - Probably the "wettest" sandwich I got, but that's to be expected when there's salsa on a bread product. Good, but not great. And those are four of their regular options! They frequently have really delicious (and always humorously named) specials, too. Are you going to have a fine dining experience here? Absolutely not. If you're looking for something romantic, intimate, upscale, classy, or trendy this is not your place. Big G's is a fun, sometimes chaotic, family-oriented place that thrives on offering an overwhelming menu filled with creative and eclectic options. If you're a Type A personality (which I sometimes I am), take a deep breath and relax. It's just lunch. It's not the end of the world. So give your self permission to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of good food!

Every time I come up to Maine I go to Big G's for breakfast. It's been eight years since the last visit sadly, but the quality and quantity is still the same. I love their food! My grandmother had the pumpkin pancake. I had a regular pancake with bacon. My grandfather had a French toast. And my sister had everything. Nothing left. So good! Definitely worth a trip no matter where you are. We are from Belgrade and the drive is just fine for the food. Make sure you get the whoopie pie or cinnamon roll. AMAZING.

Big G's prides itself on being BIG: big menu, big sandwiches, big desserts. We tried this place for dinner one night. As others have noted, the menu is overwhelming. I'd recommend reviewing the menu online before going your first time. Order a half--it's much larger than most whole sandwiches. The sandwich was fine. The pickle tasted more like a cucumber than a pickle. The sweet potato fries were very tasty. We had to wait for a bit (maybe 10 minutes?) but not too long. A great place for a quick bite.

Second time here. Was at Big Gs about 15 years ago and remembered it being pretty good. Was in the area and sought it out today and it didn't disappoint. Without a doubt the biggest $8 sandwich I've ever had or seen. It came on giant square of bread that was cut into 4 pieces that were each the size of 1/2 a normal sandwich. So instead of one sandwich you actually get two if you order the "full". I've got an entire portion the size of a sandwich you get ANYWHERE else for my lunch tomorrow. The giant bread is made in house and it is amazing. It is the kind of bread that would amazing toasted with some butter, just like it is with some meats, veggies and cheeses on it. Love the fact that they serve fries that they boast are "better than the fair". They tasted a lot like fair fries. Not many places serve top notch sandwiches and fries. Usually you get one or the other but not both. Onion rings were as crispy as you can get them which is the only way to serve big cut rings but most people can't get it right. These guys nailed it. Fountain juices, milk, including chocolate. slushies and soda all with free refills. Brought home a GIANT whoopie pie. Haven't opened it yet but I'm sure it will be delicious. Based on the parking lot and the line this is the kind of place that doesn't need any positive reviews. They've built their reputation and they've earned it. But to anyone in the area looking for a fantastic lunch with tons of choices I think you will end up like me and still remember it 15 years later. Don't get to Winslow much but might have to go off roading when heading up and down I-95 more often.

The best and biggest sandwiches around. I love the homeade bread. Pumpkin cream cheese whoopies are a MUST

Awesome might be the only word appropriate to describe Big G's. I always order the same sandwich with bean sprouts, avocados, provolone, tomatoes and tuna salad. If you order a full sandwich it comes out roughly the size of your head and weighs about 3 pounds. Big G's makes their own giant sized bread, enormous whoopie pies, cookies, and cinnamon buns, and they have a ton of other baked goods. The pumpkin whoopie pies with cream cheese icing are so so so good. If I had it my way, I'd go to Big G's every day. They have so many different sandwiches, but I don't want to stray too far from my first love - Papa Charlie.

Want a sandwich the size of your head, and preferably one named after a 70s Tonight Show guest or Maine politician? Got a hankering for a cookie or whoopie pie the size of a Radio Flyer wagon wheel? Yeah, you're looking for Big G's then. Aggressively not much to look at on the outside or interior, but there's a reason people throughout the state make a beeline for the place when in the Waterville/Winslow/Fairfield area. Fresh bread, tasty sandwich fillings, and given the turnaround this place has on a average day, you know nothing's been sitting around for too long. As everyone says, you're only going to need a half sandwich, but even then be sure to bring your appetite because you may struggle to finish even that, especially if you want to leave room for a whoopie pie (and yes, you want to save room for a whoopie pie).

I've been coming here since high school, and my favorite has always been the Miles Standwich: hot turkey, Swiss, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. I'm not a sandwich person, but I could always count on Miles when my friends wanted to come here. When I visited yesterday I was heartbroken to find that the real sliced roast turkey breast has been replaced with lunchmeat. The kids' mac and cheese was very cheesy, with some crumbs on top, but nobody comes to Big G's for mac and cheese. Same for the peanut butter cookie: tasty, chewy in the middle, but not enough to make up for the loss of the Miles Standwich.

Gigantic sandwiches! Gigantic Whoopee Pies! Great onion rings and sweet potato fries! A variety of drinks to choose from. All with big taste created from quality ingredients you would drive milles to enjoy. Serious folks, Big G's is one of those place you think would, or should, be on Guy Fieri's Triple D. TIP: The 1/2 size sandwich is big enough for any two people. Order the regular sandwich at your own risk or busting out of your pants by the time you get up. I heartily recoommend Big G's! But bring cash when you do . They are cash only.

I'm local, and I have never liked this place. Recently, my work ordered lunch for management from here, and already not liking their sandwiches, I ordered a chicken basket. For a company that brags about huge portions, I was dumbstruck--then angry-- at the two measly chicken fingers in the container. I don't even want to look at the prices to see how much my company was ripped off.

  • T R.

The sandwiches are definitely large and reasonably priced but other than that not very impressed. The bread was much too thick and fluffy. The amount of deli meat inside the sandwich was not that remarkable and was not the best quality. The tuna fish was bland and my kids chicken nuggets were disgusting. I really wanted to love this place.....

Went to this place with my girlfriend after hearing nothing but good things. The sandwiches are huge, and they have (way, way too many) options on the boards, or you can just make your own sandwich up, which is what I opted for. My sandwich seemed super damp with lots of Italian-style dressing or something on it, which is not what I wanted. I wasn't going to complain honestly, because that's normally not my thing, but since it was over $20 for just 2 sandwiches, my girlfriend took my sandwich up and asked them to remake it, with less of whatever their sauce was. It came back identical to the previous time. We assumed it was the "seasoned mushrooms" they were using, perhaps. It went back a second time, and they said that it was the way I had ordered the sandwich - with some "pepper relish(?)" dressing on it, which is apparently just lazy-man's Italian salad dressing. Regardless, they were okay-ish about making it again, this time with PEPPERONI (which is what I asked for.) The sandwich came back alright the third time, with still a very large amount of meats and cheeses, etc, on it. Sadly, the bread was abysmal and old, so I didn't bother eating it. I took it to go and later just picked at the inside, throwing the bread out. The part that got me the most was that when I went to refill my drink (I did love the bottomless sodas and milk/chocolate milk options) the girl who brought back my sandwich the last time was complaining about our "pickiness" to one of the other women working, and eyeballed me as I walked by. Clearly not aware that I could hear her, we left, and as far as I'm concerned we will not be going there again. The appeal to this place is the giant portions, but when the food is mediocre at best, and the staff is made up of hoity-toity high school beotches, the size of the portions don't make up for it. Waste of my time and money. AS AN ASIDE - they don't take credit cards, because apparently it's still 1960 in there. So BRING CASH. They have an ATM, but that will charge you an extra few bucks for their already rather expensive sandwiches. The biggest laughing-stock is their website, by the way, which I had logged onto before visiting to try and see their menu options. Aside from the website being laughably bad, outdated, and poorly made, they may have the worst and most unmemorable URL I've ever seen: big-g-s-deli.com . It's a curious mess of hyphens and idiocy. Thankfully, I never have to visit the site again because I know I won't be going back there.

I miss Big G's. The sandwich's are ginormous and it has a small-town, friendly atmosphere. A true hidden gem. I stop by whenever I am back in Maine. The Wishbone was always my favorite.

Something for everyone, from the meat lovers to the vegetarians! Fresh bread and ingredients! I'd eat here if the sandwiches we're half the size! I just wish the buffalo bill had more to it..

Massive sandwiches! I used to order the half sandwiches could only finish a half of the half. They are decent sandwiches, but nothing to write home about. I think the portions are what draw people here. The service was nice and the food was good.

I do not understand the appeal of this place. Unless its just the giant portions, which does not make a great restaurant. The portions are TOO BIG. The bread is enormous and super soft. Bread should have substance. I've eaten here three times, once for breakfast, twice for lunch. Its mostly huge egg dishes for breakfast, and I ordered pancakes (i can only take so much eggs). The pancakes were way too big, and rather flavorless. They also didn't give real maple syrup. The sandwiches for lunch are no better. As I said before, bread is too thick and way too soft and squishy. The meat is cut too thick, and is of poor quality. Veggies are fine. I also tried a bite of someone's veggies sandwich. there were hardly any actual veggies on it, mostly sprouts and a really thick layer of flavorless hummus. I most recently went and avoided the sandwiches all together and tried the corn chowder special. Bland bland bland. I had to put salt in it at the table, and you should NEVER have to do that. Stick to the french fries or sweet potato fries. They are decent. People from the area seem to swear by it, and it was packed, but i just don't see it. If you're looking for high quality food, stick to places like Portland, York, Booth Bay area, and Bar Harbor. I know they are tourist areas, but they have a high concentration of passionate chefs who create great food.

Went to Big G's in the eighteis when they were in a hole in the wall. Awesome then and awesome now. It had been 20 years since I had been back since I had moved south. Love this place and the HUGE deli sandwiches!!! Excellent combos and not a bad breacfast. Also king sized whoopie pies!!!

WONDERFUL quality, ridiculously large portion, and shockingly low prices -- what's not to love? They have plenty of great vegetarian options (always rare in Maine), and the food tasted fresh & delicious. Topnotch sandwiches. The sweet potato fries were the only "weakness" I could observe -- they weren't really restaurant-quality, but they were pretty good nevertheless (and very, very cheap).

We spend our summers in Maine and this is definitely one of our favorite places for sandwiches. I love the bread and the menu options are fun and diverse. The sandwiches are gi-normous so I always take 1/2 the sandwich home with me. It can get pretty busy at peak times and sometimes take awhile to get your food but we've always felt it was worth the wait.

  • W D.

Sandwiches as big as your head. If you've read Sunshine, by Robin McKinley, it's that kind of good, but with more variety, willingness to customize, excellent in-house breads, and dozens of things you might wish to have on your sandwich. Sandwich names which, were they revealed here, would count as spoilers. It's worth checking their menu online for the name/ingredient combinations alone. Good food, fast prep time, leftover bread ends for extremely cheap - I was poor in this region once upon a time, and lived on their bread ends - and truly magnificent carrot cake. Personal favorite: Reuben, sans dressing, with pastrami and onions added, extra mayo.

(story)In 2045, Colby Medical Center can find no correlation between escalating coronary problems and environmental links. They begin an informal study asking patients to detail their diets. Nothing seems out of ordinary. Searching for a needle in a haystack, they ask readers to journal an average week in their 20s, 30s, 40s, etc. There, they find their issue. Every bypass candidate has eaten a large sub at Big G's. (Story) Well in all honesty, Big G's is not that unhealthy. They use a ton of wonderful veggies, as well as homemade bread and wraps in various varieties. I only joke because I saw a huge lumberjack order a large and it was essentially FOUR sandwiches on roughly 3 by 5 inch bread. I had a chicken salad with bacon called Edel-something and it was quite good. I'd say 4.5 stars is a reality. I also ate a giant M&M cookies which was delicious. I'll round up.

Best sandwich place, bar none. The selection is amazing. The menu is huge. Food is the best. They also have many different dessert options. I eat here every time I am in town visiting family.

Fun, low key deli in Winslow, Maine. They serve, without question, the biggest sandwiches that I have ever seen in my life. They are the equivalent of two normal sandwiches and are cut into quarters. One sandwich is enough to feed two to three people. The staff are friendly and helpful. I ordered the weirdest sandwich that I saw on the menu, which turned out to be the "Paul Harvey," consisting of turkey, bacon, liverwurst, muenster cheese and tomatoes. It was really good. My daughter had a relatively healthy wrap, her buddy a "Bill Cosby"- a gigantic roast beef based sandwich. My wife ordered shrimp salad, which she didn't like. There was enough surplus sandwich material that she survived on everybody else's leftovers. The bathrooms are a bit gnarly, but it's a deli and not a fine dining establishment. Worth a trip for a fun lunch.

Awesome sandwiches, fresh baked bread, huge menu and bottomless drinks (coffee, tea, fruit juice, etc}.fast service. My friend said it is a big sandwich and when we went to get it I saw hers but I saw this other plate which looked big enough to feed 4 people and then I realized it was mine. For under $9 for this sandwich was an excellent deal and very yummy too.I ordered a bill cosby but eliminated the onions and added BBQ sauce.Check it out if you are in the area they have a website too.I will ABSOLUTELY be back.

yes. yes, yes, yes, yes. sandwich bigger than my head? check. homemade bread? check. delicious ingredients? check. iwas super surprised that big g's was not full of greasy sandwiches that would make me feel like i had to yif for the rest of the day, but it's true. just huge ass sandwiches that are dirt cheap. so worth the drive.

A lot of bread make these sandwiches seem huge, but then it dwarfs the contents. Staff was very friendly and helpful with ordering but overwhelmed after one section of sandwich by the maount of bread it contains. Me, cut back the bread a little and give us some more filling and you've got a winner here as their bread is delicious.

This place is fantastic. It loses a star only because its location is in the middle of nowhere, and well the atmosphere is not great, it is 70's cafeteria style, there is no "ambiance", but again who expects that at a deli. The sandwiches are fantastic. They bake their own bread which makes a HUGE difference. Honestly you only need a "1/2" sand which, even if you are really hungry it is a HUGE sandwhich. This place is a must if you are in the area...as a camp counselor, or doing something at Colby (I don't know what else you would be doing here...).

For 4 years of college I heard from my Waterville fans raving about Big G's. "Oh man the sandwiches are huge," commented one... "I couldn't finish my plate," said another... "Jesus was reincarnated in my mouth,"..... This was the constant barrage of comments I heard from my Maine friends. Like it was some sort of religious experience that I was not yet enlightened with. So I faced south and made the trek to this Mecca in the middle of nowhere. Literally, my friend driving was taking right, left, banging U-Turns, and somehow we ended up at this mid-sized diner looking place. I was there for breakfast, so I decided to get something that consisted of a 4 or 5 egg omelet with every imaginable meat and vegetable - turkey, ham, roast beef, green peppers, onions, chicken, yellow peppers, deer, mouse, grass, lettuce, hay, mountain lion - you get the point. It was then served with two gianourmous loaves of bread with some home fries and a pancake. The whole point of this place is to eat as much as possible. Taste and enjoyment is an afterthought. If you don't leave this place crying in pain because you ate too much then you didn't really get the whole experience. My religious experiences, much like Jesus's, involve physical pain for enlightenment, and Big's G did just that.

OMG. That was the first thing I said when my co-worker started pulling sandwiches out of the bag. I was in Oakland, Maine, working in our call center and one of our local folks handed me the menu to this place. The menu is huge -- they offer an amazing variety of interesting sandwiches. My co-workers brought my sandwich back, put it on my desk, and I was overwhelmed with the size. "I got you a half", my co-worker said. He reached into a bag and pulled out his "whole sandwich"... innuendos and bad jokes aside... and it was frickin huge! As Su mentined in a previous review, it was easily as big as a person's head. Not only was the sandwich large in size, it was equally as delicious. I had a variant of the Chicken Salad Sandwich which included sprouts, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and cheese. The bread is freshly baked there (their rye is phenomenal), and by the taste and consistency of the chicken salad, I can guarantee that it is made there too. The veggies were crisp and delicious, and the sandwich was probably among the best chicken salad sandwiches I have ever had. I was just slightly disappointed by how much chicken salad was on the sandwich, but I'm sure that it was only a perspective thing based on the size of this monster! My co-workers raved about their sandwiches too. The price was unbeatable... the "big as your head sandwich" was $6.25. When you're in this part of Maine, or even just driving through on 95, you must stop in and eat at Big G's deli.

My sister went to school up in Maine so my family made the 1200 mile round trip often. While Big G's is certainly not a place worth spending $148 on gas (assuming 30mpg, $3.70/gallon), if you find yourself up in Maine for whatever reason make sure you stop here and get yourself a sandwich. Food - I have a large Korean head and Big G's aptly named sandwiches are about as large as my face. The prices are unheard of around these parts and their clam chowder was divine. They also have a great whoopie pie, the name of which makes me want to, in my best Michael Scott voice, say, "That's what she said."

They make their own bread, they use super fresh ingredients, and the combinations are unique and awesome. They offer a hundred, maybe two hundred different sandwiches, as well as breakfast items, french fries, etc. To me, the sandwiches are the thing to go for. They are ridiculously huge, I can only eat the half size. When I am home visiting in Maine, I try to hit this place a couple times, worth the drive.

Hope you're hungry! Huge sandwiches. They have a very unique menu here. They named every sandwich after a person or something. It makes it a lot of fun to order and the food is even better. You could easily share a sandwich for two hungry people, and that's probably not even being completely honest about how big they are. They use fresh ingredients and have enough varieties to guarantee you'll find something you like. It's been years since I came in here, but I know I would eat here again in a heartbeat. (Unfortunately my family lives in the area, so I'll take the home cooked food, thank you.) But even the fact that I am considering Big G's, instead of homestyle, says a lot about how tasty it is. Wish I could remember more about this, but it's tasty. Oh yeah, their sandwiches are large too. And they have big sandwiches.

the best combination to me when it comes to food is tasty+big portions. i am not unique or original in this opinion yet its so hard for me to actually find it. big g's is it. mofomofo big ass sandwiches and subs. and i was lucky enough to go to college mere miles away. done and done. perfect as a meal or after a crappy college cafeteria meal. tasty things can be done with cream cheese and cranberry sauce here-the ingredients are fresh and you can do all sorts of funky creations. it was cheap and assume it still is, cause, its bumfuck maine. if you are driving through, its worth turning off the highway. take my word.

You know a place is getting the job done when you have costumers that drive an hour and a half out of their way to eat your sandwhiches. Can't say enough good things about them. Huge and I do mean huge portions, and fresh ingredients. I've taken pictures on my phone to show people in other areas of the state just how big they make their sandwhiches. Big G's is the stuff of legends
