This place is great, very quiet, good selection of films, and fair prices. The space is nice and we always have fun there.

I have been going to this place since it opened in 1978; the cinema was housed in a converted meat packing plant and the seats were old auditorium wood-backed seats bolted into the concrete floor, but the films they showed were totally different from what was available anyplace else. What still surprises me to this day is how this place ended up in Waterville and actually survived. Waterville in 1978 was a mill town with a college, and maybe that was enough. I started coming here in high school, and to say this place developed my taste in films is an understatement. I still remember the films I saw there in the late 70s and early 80's before I left for college- Xica da Silva, The Gods Must Be Crazy, several Woody Allen films, Messer Im Der Lump. They were showing these movies in a mill town. In Central Maine. Wow. And the Railroad Square Cinema not only is still in operation, but is recognized as one of the best independent theaters in the United States. And every mid-July they host the Maine Independent Film Festival, which draws people from all over the world. Last year Jonathan Demme presided with his newest film, then after the presentation invited the audience to party with him at a local restaurant. Where else does this happen? So in a matter of 35 years, the Railroad Square Cinema turned a cruddy mill town into a film buff Mecca. Think I am indulging in hyperbole? Check this place out as soon as you can...I dare you to contradict me.

Railroad Square is a great place to see movies! they often play independent films that you can't see elsewhere locally and the auditoriums are small, creating an intimate feel. the prices here are lower than at big theaters, and they also have a bargain night (Tuesday?? - you should check on that). you won't be able to catch all the blockbusters here, but that's what the other movie spots are for, right?
