Black Lantern Bed & Breakfast

We will be coming back in two years because we loved Tom and Judy that much. This Inn is ideally located to every point of interest without breaking the bank. There are three rooms to chose from and the accommodations are stellar. The breakfast alone will have you waking up and running down the stairs like a little kid in anticipation of what is coming out of the kitchen. Believe me, I had to sit on my hands so I wouldn't clap in glee when the Dutch Baby came out. Tom and Judy provide the "little touches" and there are too many to mention. Just go and get a room and see for yourself. You will not be disappointed.
We wanted a mini getaway so we booked a room at this very sweet B&B. It's the off season and we were the only guests, so it was very quiet. Since there are only three guest rooms I imagine it's a serene place to stay any time of year. The owners were very friendly and served a delicious breakfast. We stayed in the Fireside room, which as its name suggests has a lovely (and warm) gas fireplace. On a cold April night it was so cozy in our room. The whole inn has unique antique touches but with all the amenities you would want. Rooms: Since we were the only guests I was able to check out the other rooms, all of which were lovely. The Fireside room has the fireplace (you'll likely only use it in the winter/fall because it does produce heat), pretty vintage wallpaper, and a comfortable bed with a firm mattress. You have to step down into the bathroom area and the sink is inside the bedroom, which I found to be funky/charming. If you want a tiny bit more privacy book the Androscoggin room. It also has the best view, a little seating area, and it's the only room with a bathtub (the other two have showers). I thought the Garden room was the prettiest room, but that is subjective of course. The photos here and on their website are accurate, the house is very clean and beautifully appointed. A few traveler tips: The rooms don't have TVs but there is one in the common area downstairs for guest use. This didn't bother us but for some it may be an issue (or a bonus). The stairs are steep and may be challenging for anyone with limited mobility (all guest rooms are upstairs). The only very minor complaint I have -and this does not effect my 5 star rating because we knew about it ahead of time- is that they only serve breakfast until 9am, checkout is at 10:30, and there is no flexibility on either (on Sundays anyway, in order for the owners to attend church). We overslept by 15 minutes and they graciously still served us, I wouldn't have been upset if they closed the kitchen as it was our mistake. They also said that checkout was at 10:30, but at 10:18 the owner came to our door to usher us out. BUT, like I said we knew about this ahead of time and still chose to book, and we're glad we did. It was a lovely stay.
Great, welcoming little B&B! Just a short drive from all the Midcoast region has to offer! Tom and Judy, the inn hosts/owners are very accommodating, friendly, and inviting. Worth the stay for some peace of mind.

"Come on, sexy boy, gotta do this quick / While my folks are at the pharmacy; my mom is sick / She's had a cough (cough) / She got it from Jean (Jean) / And now it's a whole thing with Jean." This is obviously a gray mafia hangout. From what I gather, grandchildren are not making good decisions. The general consensus at the tables is "what are you gonna do". Also, the Shaw's vs Hannaford debate is a minefield. Merle and Norma exchanged pointed glances over their blueberry muffins and regular decafs. A deft comment on humidity by "I'd Rather be Fishing" Vern broke the tension. But this is not over.

A whole lot of Blizzards This Dairy Queen is one of the old take out only stores. There are some picnic tables scattered around on the side and in the back but it's basically just a shack that you stand outside and order. I asked the young lady working there how long this DQ has been here but the best she could come up with was "a long, long time". I guess that's pretty accurate. The great thing about DQ is the consistency. A Blizzard in Florida is going to be the same as one in Maine. Which means they are all good. This DQ had all the usually stuff and the people working here were very nice, friendly and efficient. This DQ has obviously been around for a long time and served a whole of Blizzards of the tasty type and has survived a whole lot of unpleasant blizzards of the traditional type. It's always a treat to come across a real old DQ, if this place could talk I bet it would have some great stories to tell.

This is my favorite local breakfast spot. The service was friendly, all smiles and sure to keep your coffee full. The special was raspberry chocolate chip pancakes. The pancakes were heavy and fluffy at the same time. The raspberries were tart are fresh and the chocolate chips were the perfect amount. The Texas eggs Benedict was a great new treat. The traditional eggs Benedict but with philly steak. The English muffin was grilled and had the wonderful and buttery crunch. The hollandaise sauce was creamy and yummy but needed a little bit more flavor. The corned beef hash was grilled and served with a crispy top just the way I love. This is definately my new go to breakfast spot!
Been back multiple times, tried many different options and they all are amazing! Great specials, service, and prices
Stopped for a quick lunch, and had the chef salad and home made turkey rice soup. The soup was fantastic! The salad was good too, a little light on lettuce. But I'm a leafy green freak. The staff was great and the service fast. Very reasonably priced too. Nice little spot! Glad I opted for the small business option in Topsham.

New to the area- needed a quick bite. Our "Order never printed to the kitchen" so it wasn't ready when we showed up. We were offered a free soda for the inconvenience. Not impressed. As for the food- the fries would be better if I made them at home out of a bag. Chicken parm was average. Might go back in a pinch but would try and think of something else first.
Went in today for lunch. Restaurant being renovated. Workmen made an intentional effort to move out the way for customers, but it was still awkward moving around them and their stuff. Asked the staff what was in their meatballs. Person went to look but came back and said the the "box" was gone. Later acknowledged that they came in frozen. With prevalence of food allergies these days, restaurant employees really need to have access to ingredient lists - especially for things they bring in/can't control production of. Took a chance and ordered meatball sub with cheese. Got back to work and opened sub, and the cheese peeled of with the wrapping paper. It had been laid over the top of the roll (not in the roll), melted in the oven and immediately wrapped so it fused to the wrapping paper. Paid for cheese I couldn't eat. Sub was otherwise ok. Not bad, not great. Dining room was spotless, despite the renovation.
Good little place. Stopped by for lunch with 4 kids. Fair prices on the food and they gobbled up the pizzas.

I kept hearing about Sea Dog having a great brunch. The rumors were right. This is the best brunch I've had in the entire state. Normally I hit Sea Dog because it's got great food and drink and a killer location. I always get the fish and chips and a beer (or two or 3). You can't go wrong if you choose brunch here. It's exceptional and the people are great.
My first trip to Maine and was told this was a great place to eat lobster and drink beer. Boy was I disappointed. 1st went to the hostess and was told a 30min wait even though the place seemed 3/4 full. Went to the bar and ordered a draft of their beer, bartender was rude and rather snooty. Finally seated and was met with a rather rude waiter who seemed to be put off by our questions. Ordered the lobster special, which was touted as their best dish. Out came the clam chowder. Which was not creamy at all, had a strange taste so I figure it was just so authentic that I was not appreciating it. Out came the lobster, on a bed of mussels. Cracked open one of the claws and out pored a gallon of water, seriously never seen so much water. Lobster was rubbery, mussels were ok. So a 50 dollar dish was horrible, service bad and bar tender was not a nice guy. I don't see what people see in this place but will never return.
I absolutely love their blackened haddock sandwich. The food is generally fairly good. My husband enjoys their beer selection.

Food = American Diner, Hearty portions, Thrifty Prices. Atmosphere = Carnival/Circus, with booths, tables, and a separate banquet room. Great for large groups. Service = Staff are kind and helpful. Always ready to refill your coffee. Overall = A solid spot for breakfast or lunch. Try the breakfast burrito.
If you like your food not seasoned, no flavor, lacks creativity, don't care for good hospitality - then this is the place for you! -OR- If you prefer everything you eat out of a can and can call it "home cooked" then you are golden.
Been there multiple times food is undercooked &dry wouldn't recommend to any one which is sad because it use to be good

The chicken pot pie is delicious...actually the best i have had. The staff is very nice and service is good
Okay here is the thing. Chain restaurants all suck right? I'm not inclined to say that. Sometimes you want to go to a place where it's simple straight forward menu and reasonable prices. You're probably going to see someone you know. The always have the game on, etc This is that place. Topsham does not have an Applebees and Ruby Tuesday is the WORST of these style restaurants. 99 has a varied menu and great service. The food is not going to be the best you ever had, but you go home full and it tastes fine.
Grabbed some lunch here today. Nothing impressive about this place. Still feels like this chain is stuck in the 90's when it was cool to stick random yard sale finds on your wall. Instead of fresh bread this chain serves popcorn, an odd selection but actually not a bad idea. For lunch I ordered a Vermont burger, which had onions and a maple mayo. Wasn't a bad combo but was expecting more maple flavor. Overall wasn't totally disappointed with this chain.

I am giving this two stars because our waitress was funny and nice. The food was probably the worst I have had in a long time. We got a couple of appetizers, which were both dry and hard. When our meal finally came out it was cool and lacked any kind of flavor. I got the lomein and my friend got beef and broccoli. For what it was it was over priced. I will not be going back.
We decided to give Chinatown a try for lunch. My wife had garlic chicken which came with pork fried rice and spring roll. I had orange beef with pork fried rice and dumpling. The waitress was adequate. She wasn't rude, but clearly wasn't pleased with her day. She was completely robotic. I asked for mustard, which I never received. I chose to not press the issue. But she served the lunches and brought chop sticks after I requested them. She couldn't bring herself to smile. Chinatown is probably the first Chinese restaurant I've been to that hasn't offered tea as a beverage. We had glasses of tap water with ice. Tea isn't even on the menu! Soy sauce decanters are on every table, but they are the high sodium (red cap) variety. I have become a fan of the so called light soy sauce (green cap) which apparently is not available at Chinatown. The food was adequate. It had some flavor. The orange sauce on my beef was too thick, but the fresh orange zest was a nice touch. The beef itself was paper thin shards coated with batter. Fried to death, but surprisingly not too greasy nor burned. The few pieces broccoli that accompanied the beef were nicely green with a slight crunch. If I had some pungent mustard for my dumpling, I probably would've thought better of it. My wife's garlic chicken was the better of the two lunches. It had flavor and wasn't dried out or overly greased. The spring roll was a good vehicle for duck sauce. The garlic chicken had a good amount of water chestnut pieces to break up the boring consistency of the chicken bits. I felt OK when I left there, no need for dose of Underberg when I got to the car, consequently, the 3 star rating. If I had felt poorly, I'd have given them a 2 star, but all in all it is a 3 star place. We'd probably go there again if we found ourselves in Topsham at lunch time with a craving for Chinese food.
The service was good, very friendly and never had an empty glass. The food arrived quickly with generous portions. I ordered the orange beef and my fiance ordered the general tso chicken, both with fried rice and egg roll. The egg rolls were crunchy and satisfying. We also ordered a large order of crab rangoon. These were very disappointing, no crab or sweetness at all. They were cooked well but lacked any flavor. Hoping to give them another chance.

Twice now I have gone to mc donalds for my nightly mc flurry to savor my ice cream cravings. The ice cream is amazing btw. However, I have pulled up to the speaker and no one answers for me to place my order. I pull up to the 2nd window and there are a few young kids working the night shift and they took 2 minutes or more to notice me at the window. I young girl comes to the windo, slams it open and stared at me. I told her no one answered and that I noticed another patron pull away and go to Wendy's. She sighed and rolled her eyes. I waited a few awkward seconds and placed my order. She punched the order in, took my money, made my mc flurry and handed it to me with ice cream on the side of it dripping onto my lap. I went to look up and ask for a napkin and the window slammed in my face. As I drove away, I looked back and was given the middle finger that I don't think she intended me to see. It was the worst service I've ever had. I felt like I did something wrong to deserve such crude, immature gestures. Unfortunately, I will now drive the extra 2 miles to the other mc donalds across town for an extra .19 cents for my ice cream.
