Uncle Andy’s Coffee Shop

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!! It reminds me of the diners my grandparents would take me into when I was a child. The curtains are homemade, the booths are old and worn and like slinking into a big marshmallow, old formica tables, worn floor, paneling on the wall, and a countertop area straight out of Mayberry. I had the special omelette which was tomato, basil, chicken, spinach, and provolone cheese. It came with perfectly seasoned and cooked home fries, and a peach muffin (dang!) which was like eating peach cake. There was so much food, that I saved it for lunch later that day. My sweetie had the Farmer's Scramble, which looked absolutely wonderful as well. The portions were a generous size, the wait staff was sweet, coffee good, juice fresh...all in all, I'll definitely be back again. I'm still salivating over the muffins. Words will not do justice to the way they caramelized the natural sugars in the peaches when they toasted the muffin to perfection. It was like eating a well prepared pineapple upside down cake without the pineapple. The muffin was UBER soft and moist with just the perfect hint of peaches.

Being is Sales the perks are traveling and being able to find hidden gems like Little Bigs. I felt like a kid in a candy store ! So many selections, what to choose; and let's be real you can't just get one ! I got a box of 4 ! Nutella & Banana, Bittersweet Chocolate, Maple Bacon Crella, and the Raspberry Bismarck. Let's just say the Nutella & Banana was screaming my name and didn't even make it out of the parking lot before it was in my mouth ! So delicious, light and airy, had a hint of fried dough taste; and just the correct ratio of banana to Nutella. I will def be back to sopo to try the hand pies as they looked just as scrumptious !
Oh. My. God. Pay no mind to the strip mall exterior, for when you enter you will be journeying in to a world of pure imagination. (Apologies to Gene Wilder, but seriously.) Walking in to Little Bigs you may be overwhelmed by the sheer number of choices, the imaginative flavor creations or the tantalizing smells. The good news is, you really can't go wrong. My personal fave from a recent trip? Banana and Nutella. At the other end of the sweet spectrum was a fantastic lemon curd. Lastly I tried a potato crust pie with cheese and asparagus. While still delish, I'd go straight doughnut next time. It's food like this that gives me motivation to go to the gym.
stop what you are doing and go!!!!

Starbucks

Maine Mall,364 Maine Mall Rd
South Portland, 04106
Reviews:
By far my favorite Starbucks location I've ever been to. I'm actually quite sad that I won't be seeing these guys around much anymore! But seriously: The environment of the mall is never a calm one (unless it's a blizzard... and even THEN it's still pretty nuts), but this team really handles it with grace. There is always a smile on their faces, they'll recommend things that they love, and they're all genuinely great people to chat with and get to know. And then naturally, the customers of the location are what drags the experience down because of the nature of the clientele of a mall. You get literally every age range... from teeny-bopper who wants their vanilla bean frappuccino, to the wonderful (or super grumpy) elderly customers who are just looking for a cup of coffee to get them through their shopping experience... People feed off each others' energy, and it's SO apparent at this coffee shop, because of the close quarters you are confined to while waiting in line. Not to mention: The line? Half the time it's out the door. I firmly believe it's because the staff are so wonderful more than anything else.
The best service, the best location, the best soy latte, the best service (worth mentioning again).
Props to the baristas who work in this teeny tiny Starbucks, located inside of the Maine Mall (near GAP and Forever 21). The mall goers are ruthless, and this place can get overwhelming in seconds. I very rarely receive a poorly made drink from these folks, and the service is great.

Verbena Eat Right Now

This cute little eatery and coffee shop I slated in SoPo. I have stopped in a few times after yoga for a cup of tea or coffee. The place is absolutely adorable and the staff are really friendly. I haven't eaten here yet, but they have a nice looking breakfast and lunch menu. There are lots of tables to sit at and it is on a little downtown street near other shops. Great spot!
Absolutely delicious chicken salad sandwich on fresh bread. Great tea selection. Everything else I've had here is good too. People are nice and the newly-decorated space is a great place to work or meet someone.
The plan was to grab a coffee with a new business associate tonight in SoPo; we were going to meet at Cia, but it was closed (5PM), so we tried Snow Squall (closed on Mondays). I remembered Verbena and had not yet checked it out, so we went there (open until 6:30). It was 6PM and we were the only clientele, so it was regrettably stark. The server was very friendly, and she made a good soy chai latte. We sat on the leather chairs in front and weren't rushed out. I would definitely give Verbena a shot at breakfast or lunch; it would have big shoes to fill (my loyalty in South Portland belongs to 158 and Scratch), but I'll keep an open mind.

Taco Trio

Do yourself a favor taco fans and just get 3 steak (carne asada). Guac is good but needs lime and they have all kinds of nice Mexican beers. Pacifico on tap. Warning - stay away from all pastor related activities
My husband has a carne asada tacos and I thought the meat was pretty dry. I had the chicken burrito and that was awesome! We also got some guacamole which was probably the best I've had! When I didn't care for was the fact that you had to pay extra for lettuce and cheese on the tacos, cheese maybe, but lettuce? Overall I would go back for sure!
I've been a long time customer of Taco Trio and a big supporter. However, recently our meals have been below average and the service has been poor. The staff seems to be rushing through orders and making frequent mistakes. The latest example tonight was a carne asada burrito that I ordered with mixed beans and sour cream (charged extra). It came with pinto beans only and no sour cream. The tortilla was also soggy and torn in several places making it difficult to eat. My wife's meal also included sour cream after we ordered it without. She's sensitive to dairy and was disappointed to have to scrape the top of her sopes into the trash. I hope the owner/manager takes notice and steps in to help their staff realize that the quality that Taco Trio is known for is more important than quantity or speed. If I wanted a cheap, quick, not very tasty meal there are chain restaurants that do it better.

Amato’s Italian Sandwich Shops

1108 Broadway
South Portland, 04106
Reviews:
Amato's is THE sandwich shop while in Maine. Everything is so fresh, and so good. I particularly am addicted to the salad dressing. It's one of those oil based homemade Italians that's just impossible to replicate. Thankfully they sell it so you can easily stock up. Because of the dressing, I've always gone for the salad. But the sandwiches are always a family hit, too. And where else can you really get a large Italian sub (and it's a huge large) for $6.99?
Lots of grab and go however we chose to have sandwiches made. Although I am sure the food is good, my wrap came with cheese when I asked for none and loaded with olives which the order taker did not mention in the confirmation of "lettuce tomatoes onions cucumbers pickles". I won't be eating until we get home. All made to order fresh which was nice. To bad no where to sit. Checkout was great. Checked in with me to let me know where my order was.
This Amato's is right by my house, and I go often for sandwiches, wraps, salads, and pizza, all of which are delicious. They're generous with portions, and the veggies are quite fresh. Everyone that's helped me there has been either friendly or super-friendly. Amato's is several giant steps above what you'll get at a fast food joint or Subway. Their pizza is also very good, and not just for a sandwich shop. For anywhere. In addition to the food, they also have a small but good selection of wines and beers. Shipyard Export in a can! This place is a real neighborhood staple for me.

Kamasouptra

This place stands out quiet and lonely in the mall food court. However do not let this bother you. I often end up here for a light meal of their soup and their fresh wheat roll. My favorites are the curried root lentil and the Itlaian bean and kale. The red pepper, brocolli and sebago beer are great if you prefer cheesier soups. I have wanted to visit their downtown location but a carry out bowl is my preferred quik fix !
For Take-Out Soup If you are a person who is hesitant to going to any food court fares like me, you really need to give this little place a try. Although the "homebase" is in monument square in Portland, this is a great alternative to all of the greasy pizza, fattening burgers and/or old chinese fare that you will get from the typical mall food courts. Yesterday, a co-worker and I stopped in to grab some quick, yet fresh lunch. I got the New England Clam Chower with bacon pieces and then got two of the fresh and warm wheat rolls that they make throughout the day and keep soft and never have a stale one. When you get the meal, you can get the soup, a roll, a dessert and a drink. The desserts are usually locally made mini whoopie pies or cookies and/or fruit of some sort. The only draw back that they changed in the mall location is that they used to make fresh muddles strawberry lemonade and or/ home made root beer but I think that must have been to expensive to run because they have installed a fountain soda machine. This is something that really doesn't match the decor and meaning behind the freshness of the soup and home made products so, this was a bit disappointing. My friend got the sebago beer and cheddar soup with finely pureed jalapenos in the mix that gave it some smoky feel to it with a slight kick. You have to try this place if you want a better alternative to the rest of the zombie like feel of the food court.
Freeport Public Market Karmasouptra: Amazing veggie tortilla soup!!! I'm always looking vegan soup recipes that are filling. The two gentlemen running this location not only told me what was in it, but they actually wrote down the ingredients and told me how to make it! Now that is customer service!!! Thank you!!!

Husband and wife team making it happen. Real deal here folks.. No cookie cutter everything is the same size stuff. This is like your momma (in this case, your dad) made it. Juices on your turnover bubbled out and your cookies big and yummy. They make baguettes, burger rolls, hot dog rolls, focaccia, prairie bread and lots of Danishes and turnovers. They are getting known which is good for them! Just get there early for your best selection.
I'm joining the rest of the folks. This place is a soon-to-be-discovered Gold Mine. Small joint, friendly people and clearly, obviously, beyond a shadow of a doubt, folks who are passionate about what they are doing. Can't tell you what's good because it's all good! Wonderful, really. Get there soon, because soon it will be one hell-ov-a "Got to go there" place. A Scratch equal. No, a bit better. The bread is truly tastier. Go!
First visit and I enjoyed both what experienced and tasted. Sort of a cross between the best of an old fashioned bakery done in a modern way. As you come through the door you can see they are still getting started. It has the same sort if bare bones feeling that Little Bigs did initially, everything centered around the baking. This is to be expected in a new business and the warm greeting by staff/owners(?) made me feel welcome. The size off the display cases makes it seem like they have fewer offerings than they actually do. The reality is that they have a greater range of rolls, breads, and pastries than most this side of the bridge. I picked up a chocolate chocolate chip cookie (for the Mrs.) and a blueberry turnover for myself. I admit that the cookie looked so inviting that I at it almost immediately. It was thick, moist and so delicious. Adult chocolatey rich not too sweet. I ate it so quickly I unfortunately only have a photo of the turnover, which for the record I did bring home, and the menu.

Exceptional quaint spot that is a true favorite among the locals. Everything is fresh, flavorful, and presented well. Reservations an absolute must. I had scallops with lobster stuffed ravioli. EXTRAORDINARY! Perfect. For a romantic evening, get a seat looking outside.
Hands down, the most delicious Caesar Salad ever. Easily the best restaurant in South Portland and - without question - one of the best restaurants in the Portland area.
Nice little neighborhood Italian restaurant. I had a great pasta and pork dish with a little Pinot noir. Very tasty and a nice out for Kristen and I.

I stopped in for a healthier late lunch choice on Saturday and loved what I got. I was greeted immediately by one of the owners when I walked in and he explained to me how to order. One side of the shop has salads and the other side had wraps and more. I wanted a salad in a wrap and they made it for me as they do for everyone-just the way they like it. I even got a Sutter Home Chardonnay mini to go with it and seated myself inside at the bar in front of the window and peacefully watched the people and cars go by. There is seating outside, but the intermittent thunderstorms set me indoors looking out as the next best thing. I selected mixed baby greens and added roasted potato, portabello mushrooms, carrots, kalamata olives, blue cheese, apples and a cucumber yogurt dressing of some delicious kind and had them chop it all up and put it in a wrap. So delicious that I have to go back later this week and have it again. For dessert, I was given a Nutella cake. Heaven, heaven, heaven. Rich, but not overpowering. Truly decadent. I will be back as a regular for sure! Friendly people and the owner in-store. Fantastic!
Extensive menu with lots of items that I suppose you could assemble into something that tasted good, but sadly, the signature wrap (Mediterranean Chicken) that I got lacked any sort of flavor. No acid in the salsa, lack of salt overall, no garlic flavor as advertised - just a mushy, bland, blah wrap. Nothing gourmet about it at all. The person I was with had a salad and said it was good, but nothing spectacular. We were offered a sample of the "preserved apples" and yogurt. This was nothing more that apples out of a tin with a tiny dollop of greek yogurt plopped on. The syrup was overly sweet and off-putting. Wrap, salad and 2 sodas = $20.04. Many other places in the area where you get a better product for a greater value. A few thoughts for the restaurant... While splitting the lines for the salad and wrap/ bowl stations seems like a good idea, if you are paying for more than yourself, it makes it difficult to coordinate paying your bill. Also, you need to provide a side that isn't a dessert item. What I wouldn't have done for a crunchy chip to break up the mush monotony that was happening with the wrap. Lastly, what is the point of being able to choose your greens and then handing it to someone to build your salad? Seems like a strange system to pick a prepackaged bowl of salad, just to have someone unpackage, build and then stick it back in.
So we were going to a 12:30pm show at the movies - we were going to have lunch first at the new salad and wrap place. At 11:20 the shop was still closed but the hours read 11:00am opening. Totally disappointed and we went to Panera instead. Maybe they went out if business already!!!!
