Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream

Madison Ave
Skowhegan, 04976
Reviews:
In Maine you must stop by a Gifford's ice cream stand. I believe this one is the original and has a small miniature golf course out back. Right on a main road so easy to get in and out and ample parking. The variety of ice cream flavors is great and not like anything you would find at other places. All flavors created by Gifford's and oh so fresh and yummy. Certainly not for those watching their waistline. Ice cream is thick and creamy and all ingredients are so fresh. Get a cone or dish with several different flavors and enjoy the decadence of Gifford's in every bite! Don't leave Maine without tasting Gifford's ice cream. Just ask the server for a taste of whatever you like so you can make a truly informed decision. May be hard to choose though! Hope you enjoy!!!!

Heritage House

Reviews:
My father dined at the Heritage House after he was paired up with the owner on the golf course. He recommended it highly. Last night, twenty years later, we had a wonderful night there. Our waitress Amanda was knowledgeable and attentive. She seemed proud to serve the food which was fresh and plentiful. The blackened salmon with their authentic fettuccini was fantastic. Everything looked like it was made to order. Well priced and worth the wait.
I grew up around this place and never once did I come here during that time. My first visit was in April 2011. I brought my wife and my father here for dinner one night at my wife's prompting - she was tired of the rest of the restaurants in town that all offer similar food to each other. Ok, wow, who would have thought that such a great restaurant exists in such a small town. In the past, when bringing my father out to dinner we would go to Waterville, as there is not much in terms of good dining in my hometown. My experience at Heritage House changed that, now there is no reason for me to drive 20 miles to find a good meal when visiting family. The service here was great. Our waiter greeted us with a real smile that did not disappear as he walked away to other tables, a truly pleasant person. For the food I started with the escargot, it was nice, garlicky, buttery and yummy. For my entree I ordered the seared tuna, it was great. My wife had a bit of a problem, she does not like sweet entrees and the lamb she ordered was certainly sweet, it had a coconut lemon sauce that she had asked for on the side. Unfortunately the chef missed that request. Though she had a few bites and I tried some to (it was a little sweet even for me), they took it away, and offered to make a new one. Having been at the restaurant for a while already we decided to share mine and settled for dessert afterwards. They took the entree off the bill. Dessert was pretty good, just a simple chocolate mousse. The apps and entrees are the appeal to this place and for me I would skip the dessert.
Specials tonight all sound fantastic. French onion soup as good as it gets, Caesar salad well prepared with fine Cajun style blue-fin tuna stir fry, great prep, different and excellent. Stuffed haddock is just as good. Desserts, salads, everything here wonderful, prices reasonable, service so friendly. No doubt that this is best gourmet restaurant and finest dining in Waterville and we are 12 miles away in Skowhegan! Give it a try, worth the trip.

Alice’s Restaurant

Reviews:
We got breakfast to go and it was amazing. Eggs, bacon, homefries, toast, omelettes, even the hot chocolate was yummy!! Great service both on the phone and in person. We will definitely be back!!
You can get every thing you want at Alice's restaurant - for breakfast for sure. If you're going out for breakfast in Skowhegan, this is the place to go. Eggs, pancakes, breakfast sandwich and really good coffee - cooked and served by people who card about what they're doing.
The breakfast fare is abundant, fresh, and deliciously home made. The pancakes are huge, take up the entire plate and can be filled with fresh mixed berries. The corn beef hash is like nothing you have ever tasted. Huge chunks of corn beef, carrots, cabbage, potatoes, etc. The French toast was thick with a crispy exterior and warm center. The eggs were cooked perfectly. Quick and friendly service and very reasonable prices.

Gifford’s Ice Cream

Reviews:
We kept seeing signs for Gifford's Ice Cream so I was interested in trying it when we finally came to this ice cream stand. The stand was a little busy and it took a while for the line to move. The service was nice enough though and we got our 3 scoop ice cream cone for about $6. The ice cream was good and the portions were average but we had to eat it pretty quick since it started to melt right away.
Awesome, awesome place. The place can be a little slow when they get busy, but it's worth waiting for. The Maine Blueberry Ice Cream is "THE YUM!" Fantastic place to eat ice cream. MMMmmmmmm!
This ice cream is so worth it...who cares if it takes a little longer to get the line going? The Sweet & Salty Pretzel is a new flavor and it's just incredible. I wish I lived in Skowhegan...Gifford's Ice Cream is truly the best, IMHO that is.

The Bankery

Reviews:
The Bankery created our wedding cake and it was exactly what we wanted- beautiful & delicious. The owners were so nice to work with. They even delivered to our wedding venue in Kennebunkport! Since then, I've been back several times when visiting Skowhegan and had their delicious food and coffee. The scones are absolutely to die for!
Beautiful works of art, but I have to agree with Paul, the flavor isn't there. Generous servings. Huge chocolate chip cookies, however, the taste is bland. The only flavor was in the chips. Not buttery, melt in your mouth. Cannoli had little flavor. Macaroons are huge and full of coconut but still not rich in flavor. We were very disappointed after spending over $16 for 6 cookies, 2 cannolis, 2 macaroons & 2 brownies.
this is an oasis in the downtown area of skowhegan-when you have a big, long day of shopping-just rest your heels, and come to the bankery-(once a fancy old bank) and have a coffee,pastry....or a small soup and croissant..if theres a birthday-there are custom gourmet cakes with unreal frosting--- such a pleasure to go there-

Great little hidden gem. An old mill on the river now a pug. Good live music and good pub food . we ordered a burger which was grilled outside .. delish! slow service perhaps due to the stairs.. we were upstairs ? but overall a good experience . try some local beers . ask your server
Good good food. Staff very attentive and helpful with food choices and change ups. They work hard to keep their customers extremely happy. Love my friends which are just like my own family .
I had the pleasure of dining at this quaint pub/restaurant recently. It has a fantastic atmosphere and their website is frequently updated. I had the baked haddock special with a cheese sauce. It was fantastic. The only minor downsides were: -The service was a little slow. Given that I went on a Saturday, it's somewhat expected. -The music was a little loud for a restaurant environment, in my opinion. Overall 4 stars, definitely worth checking out.

M Thai

105 Water St

Reviews:
The food was extremely mediocre (Pad See Yu, Green Curry, Sicy Bamboo), they didn't supply the extra rice we asked for, and to top it all off they refused to offer us something from the "dinner" menu and yet charged us "dinner" rates because they don't have a lunch menu on Saturdays, which they didn't inform us of when we ordered so the lunch was way more expensive than we expected. The food wasn't terrible, we did eat it. But that's about all I can say about it. Meh.
Awesome pad thai. The apple fried rice was a risk I would take a million times over! Great food wirh great service! Best Thai food in the state!
Very, very good food, well served, reasonably priced. Will come here again, although we're seldom in Skowhegan.

This place is A-OK. Everyone we met was very nice. A very chill place, good people. If you are looking for good food and good drinks, you'll want to go to Old Mill Pub just across the river. But if you are looking for a fun place to chill out with some nice local people, South Side is the place to go. Next time, we are going to try the homemade bread. BONUS: they have an outdoor (semi-enclosed) smoking lounge where you can take your drinks.

Steve’s Snacks Bakery

They use hydrogenated oil in their Whoopie Pies. Do a google search on hydrogenated oils which are banned in several countries and has been basically described as the worst thing you can put in your body. Companies that use them in their products should be banned because they only have an interest in profit and not the health and well being of the consumer. On a side note these taste like the processed products they are.
The whoopie pies are sold in Market Baskets in NH & MA. They are soooo good. They are big too and the serving says two. I just have a bite here and there so as not to go soo caloric crazy.. The flavors are varied and awesome. IMO the best are coconut and the orange one!!
Some people are infatuated in finding the perfect cupcake. I am infacuated in finding the perfect whoopie pie. Steve's whoopie pies are distributed all over New England, including the great state of Connecticut. That is where I purchased mine. Because they're made in Maine, the one state probably considered to be the center of the whoopie pie universe, I was expecting a little bit better quality. I thought Steve's whoopie pies were a little bit too sugary/sweet. I felt like I was eating a candy bar and not eating a hand baked item. They weren't bad. But neither were they great. They sort of reminded me of Cranberry Island whoopie pies, but perhaps double in size.
