Stopped here for lunch on our way to Bar Harbor...and, to be honest, wasn't expecting much from a small sleepy town along the water, and we were refreshingly surprised. Ate at the bar...had a turkey panini and chicken panini..both were tasty and fresh. French fries were large and crisp. Big props to owners Brian and Jessica for bringing a tasty delight to our all-day drive. Definitely worth stopping for a bite.
A few weeks ago, my sister mentioned being in Rumford and asked me about a bistro located in the historic Hotel Harris. Since I hadn't been to Rumford in awhile, I wasn't familiar with Rumford having an upscale, downtown eatery. I am fond of rural places, especially in Maine's western mountains. I'm aware that the changes during the first decade of the 21st century hasn't been kind to paper towns like Rumford. Since I wanted to take a drive across Route 2 into the White Mountain National Forest, I suggested that perhaps we try to make our way back through Rumford and check out Brian's. The restaurant isn't new; it opened in 2008. It's probably the only place like it within about an hour's drive. I read that owner Brian Nichols describes the restaurant as "fine dining without pretensions." I'd say that's an accurate assessment based upon our experience on a Saturday night. The menu is varied, with a number of pasta, meat and fish-themed dishes. There are ample appetizers, too. We decided to sample the fried green beans, with a house-made chipotle ranch dip. Kind of like onion rings, but with crisp green beans substituted for the onions. The beans were breaded on the outside, flash fried, and were a nice beginning. My sister went with the buffalo mac and cheese. This was a gargantuan serving of penne, tossed with chicken in a spicy cheese sauce and then topped with seasoned crumbs and baked. It arrived piping hot. I went with the bistro burger, topped with pepper jack cheese. The burger comes with lettuce, tomato, onions, and a pickle, on a hearty bun. The burger wasn't anything special and a bit overcooked for my liking. I probably should have opted for one of the other menu options. The restaurant has a full bar; the beer selections were a bit lean for my liking and I settled for a Newcastle Brown Ale. The service was ok, nothing outstanding. It may have been because the place was jumping by the time we got our food and the waitress was slow checking back with us. I'm willing to give Brian's another shot when I'm passing through Rumford. It's definitely an upgrade for the area.
The drinks and dinners are fabulous! Very flavorful and creative for a small town. I'm from Boston and am very impressed! The service I also fantastic!!

Let's face it Rumford isn't a huge tourist town. If you eat here, you're probably a local, except us, of course. On our way from Bangor to see a few waterfalls in Maine we opted to stop for lunch in this town and enjoyed our meal. This isn't authentic, homemade Italian, but it passes the edible test and the prices are the cheapest I've seen in years, not to mention the ladies working at lunch are loaded with personality. While the lunch pasta bar looked rough, the large chef salad we started with wasn't. It more than fed two of us and had fresh, crispy romaine rather than cheap iceberg. In addition, the veggies were fresh and the dressing was good. We also ordered two large sandwiches: meatball and chicken parm, both of which tasted great. The bread was warm, the meatballs/chicken were tender and the sauce was tasty. For the price it was a steal. This place is an extremely laid back spot that doesn't know what the meaning of fancy is. They don't even let you pay till after you've eaten. If you want to feel like a local and don't care about nice plates, fancy meals and shiny menus come here and you'll find value.
Had the steak special (steak, mushrooms, onions, green peppers on a hoagie) and was pleasantly surprised. Fries were decent, as were the prices. I love walnut baklava, so I had to try it, but was disappointed.
We've eaten here many times. I think their Basil's pizza is the best pizza in the area. Great steak & cheese subs too!

We just stayed here for one night when visiting a friend who lives in the area. This is a great little inn in a rural section of Maine. The inn keeper was VERY nice and accommodating. The breakfast in the morning was delicious! The inn itself is very homey, well decorated and very clean. We were not there to ski but apparently there is great skiing in the area. I would recommend this place to anyone who finds themselves in the Rumford/ Bethel area of Maine.
My husband and I and our 5 yr old stayed here February vacation. We enjoy bed & breakfasts and when I looked around for places to stay close to Sunday River this was by far the best deal and looked to promise a comfortable stay and good breakfasts. If you're looking for a perfect place, this is not it - it's a bed and breakfast in an old farmhouse. Big deal that some areas could use fresh paint- many B&Bs are in old homes and farms. The place is very clean and comfy, and the animals live in another section. We got to meet some puppies on our first night but the dogs were seldom seen in the guest area. They keep a keurig by the door to welcome you with coffee, tea or cocoa when you come back from your adventures which was thoughtful and appreciated, and they put out evening treats. I'm used to breakfast being it and the kitchen is otherwise closed the rest of the day. Jenna kept a fire going to put our ski boots by to dry. Breakfasts admittedly were over the top for our particular habits, but after other guests departed Darlene scaled it back for us. Expect eggs, sausage, ham or bacon in a variety of ways each morning, but they also keep yogurt, cereal and fruit at the ready for those that like it leaner. We stayed in the Rose room and they set up a cot there for our son to sleep in. Darlene even pulled out a tub of toys for my son to amuse himself with when we needed a break. The private bathroom we had is perhaps the one referenced in other reviews, it has the old toilet setup with the overhead tank and an iron claw tub with shower head. We had no issues with it, but perhaps a larger\taller person would be cramped in that particular shower. The shared bathrooms are modern. Thumbs up, I'd recommend it to anyone looking to stay in the area. Thank you Jenna & Darlene!
A run down inn on a beautiful farm . the inn keepers were were nice and so was the quiet location but the inn is in desperate need of updating . just everywhere you look . if you are allergic to dogs or pets do not stay here . breakfast was very good .

Was looking forward to a Maine Italian Sandwich when I took a recent trip there. Sandwich itself was good, but three out of our four sandwiches were incorrectly made
