My husband and I tried Thurston's on a Saturday. Cute idea - kind of like a family owned 5 Guys. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Menu has good variety. Mainers will love that they can get 2 grilled red hotdogs on a nice toasted roll for $5. (And visitors need to try one!) Nice thinly cut onion rings that were good but a little greasy. The hand cut fried were good. Lots of good burger toppings available. Free samples of frozen custard the day we visited. A little pricey but overall a good little joint. We will come back again.

This place has great potential. The people that work there are very friendly, and genuinely ask for and listen to feedback. I appreciate that they buy locally as much as possible. I got a veggie burger that was just ok ... It was a little too salty and fell apart. With a few tweaks from the chef, I think it could be really great. The fries were awesome, and the coffee custard is delicious! Made in-house! My kids and husband said their burgers were very tasty. My only gripe about the decor is the floor ... It doesn't match the green and yellow color scheme. Putting in black floors would pull everything together.

Po Boys was closed Monday night, so I stopped at Thurston's for the first time and had just a burger with my choice of toppings. I thought the price was steep when I paid it... $5 for a hamburger??? But it was so good! The best I've had in the area after nine years. I will go back and bring others. My toppings: BBQ sauce, grilled onions, mushrooms... and pickles.

We liked this burger just as well, if not better than Elevation & better than Five Guys. The onion rings were great & fries, very good. The chocolate frozen custard was creamy & great tasting. Found the prices in line with similar restaurants. Definitely going back!

The perfect burger and the fries are outstanding. The help is friendly and well trained. They greet you as you come through the door and deliver your meal to your table. I don't know any other fast food place that does that. When you finish your burger try their frozen custard, it's good too. You can't beat the price. This spot is now a regular stop for me.

food is just ok and service at lunch was very slow...

I really like the vegetarian chick pea burger...it's nice that Thurston's has vegetarian and vegan options! The free toppings menu only adds to the good value. My boyfriend doesn't eat beef and he was happy that there was a turkey burger option...which he said was delicious! From the friendly greeting to the quick service, everything was perfect and we will be back very soon!

Great fries, burgers, and custard. Prices are reasonable and service is quick. I've been continually satisfied with my service and would recommend them to anyone looking for a real tasty meal.

Thurston's Wicked Good Burger is Wicked Underwhelming. I will give them other chances though, because it's quite obvious they're new and still trying to figure out how they're going to work. The staff is awkward and not very knowledgable about the menu, but still very kind. The burger is okay, Five Guys prices but no five guys flavor. Smaller too. Fries are very good, onion rings are stringy and greasy and gross. Both over-priced. ($5+ each) and inconsistent (huge serving to go, tiny little handful when you eat in.) Have yet to try the frozen custard but will when they start finding their groove.

Got the house burger with fries and the flavor of the day for a shake. Cost 12.86. Texture of burger was great but bun was very soggy. Fries were ok, shake was pretty Damn good. Just over priced for what I felt I got and quality of food. There are a couple other places I'd stop for a burger before this and spend the same amount.

Amazing burgers, great sides and delicious milk shakes. Best part of this place is the quality of the beef, it's high quality, and full of flavor. The prices can't be beat, highly recommended.

Sad to see a host of bad reviews here, I have to disagree. Thurston's serves an excellent, high quality product for a very fair price and clearly provide excellent customer service at the same time. Burger is very tasty... somehow they get a really great crunch on the outside. Toppings are totally fresh and as generous and nicely assembled as you would ever do for yourself at home. Fries are also very good, fresh and handcut daily. used to go to five guys for a good cheap burger, not any more, this beats it hands down. Certainly there are a large number of finer restaurants in town offering up crazy good burgers that this can't compete with, but those are in the $12.00 range, not $5.00, and not of the fast food ilk. I challenge anyone to find a better burger in town for that price. Do yourself a favor... try one, you'll be surprised.

Generally very solid, had a good veggie burger. Lots of local food, reminds me a little of the B Good model. Prices weren't cheap but you pay more for real food. Only complaint is the site, all paved and unfriendly to walkers. Doesn't seem too friendly for cars either. Would a little landscaping be too much to ask?

  • Shelley H.

Lovely atmosphere and great service. Fries are amazing, burgers have soggy buns but they seem to be trying to improve that. You can get toppings on the side, which helps with that. As a healthy alternative to fast food with made to order quality, they are worth the slight wait, they are not McDonalds and IMHO that's a good thing! If you're in a hurry, I'd recommend calling ahead, they do a thriving pick up business for that reason. Their frozen custard is excellent as well. Slightly higher prices than you might expect at a burger joint, but you get what you pay for in good quality food, attentive staff, and immaculate eat-in dining area.

This place interesting. I'm not sure if I got my story straight but from what I understand, the owner owns loads of KFCs around the area and this place is his pet project. The name is wicked Maine. The place is run like a fast food joint but the quality of the food is surprisingly above satisfaction. Order at the counter then it's delivered to your seat. I had the Thurston Burger and added avocado (that's right! they have fresh avocado!) The bun was fresh, the burger size was generous and I left filled nicely. Give the frozen custard a try if you have a sweet tooth or even take it to the next level and grab a frozen custard cookie sandwich. I tried the strawberry and chocolate, both scrumptious. I hope the owner converts some of his other places to Thurston Burgers (and keeps it quality.) So far, so good!

My wife and I tried this place about a month ago, en route home from northern Maine, and it was DELICIOUS. She has a gluten-allergy, as well as a number of other food sensitivities, and so eating out can feel like rolling the dice, even when places aggressively advertise allergy-preparedness. Well, these burgers and fries didn't upset her stomach AT ALL (a sign of a clean kitchen!), and as an added bonus, they had GLUTEN-FREE BUNS that weren't half bad. I especially appreciated being able to pick what cheese we wanted, since I hate American cheese. This place is a gem in need of some better marketing!!!

Ok so here it is... I have tryed this place 3 times now. The first experience -well let's just say not good! My wife and I both got sick -enough said. The second time the guys at work wanted to try it so I agreed to give it another chance - as we know every place has a bad day- right.... well soggy buns and a greased soaked burger served with cold fries- not impressed!! Question the bad day theory. Well tonight my daughter and son-in-law insisted We go they like it and I was just being over critical in my opinion as I'm a "foodie " so..... I went again -third time was again not the charm. I understand it's fast food - but.... come on if your cooking to order get the order right!!! Burger medium rare- served as a hockey puck - (better than the grease soaked burger previous ) bacon- dried and brittle -like it was cooked and reheated several times throughout the day. Lettuce- soggy and wilted- tomatoes soft and chewy. My daughter's burger the same- son in law's crispy and chewy as well- fries cold and way over salted. The best part of our dinner and the reason they get 3 stars is the frosty style milkshakes - tasty and spot on. Sure they were loaded with high fructose corn syrup but Hey - they were the best part of the meal. Think I will stick to elevation burger!

AVOID THIS PLACE!!! Woodfords Corner will benefit when it closes, and with the service provided it shouldn't be long.

I pass this place all the time and thinking it was just another burger joint. Welllll I should have come in sooner! It. Is. Awesome! The fries were cooked perfectly, not hard, old, cold, or crunchy and the burger was thick and hearty. I just got the basics because it being my first time I didn't want to go all out. I definitely will be back!

Best burger I have ever had! You need a napkin with every bit...extremely fresh! So many deserts to choose from...you could go crazy! I eat here at least once a week...it's a must try!

Amazing burgers. Service is always a little odd but I like that. The food is what really counts and I'm thinking they have the best "fast" burger in town.

This place wasn't too bad. I got a combo meal (burger with side and drink. Side choices are fries, onion rings, or salad). The burger and onion rings I ordered were good. Thurston's give you the option to add unlimited toppings, which is nice. The menu was pretty limited, but everything I tasted was solid. The food was nothing special, but definitely tasty and satisfying. I ended the meal with a frozen custard with Oreos. It was very delicious My two gripes about this place are parking and speed. Parking can be tricky. The Forest Ave traffic doesn't help either. Also, the wait for food can be a little longer than desired. But they just opened two days ago, so I assume it will get better as time goes on. I recommend giving this place a shot

I've heard this place wasn't great when they first opened, and then I didn't hear too much after that, so I was hesitant to try this place. I'm really glad I did. First off, they have a huge menu, from hot dogs to BLTs to haddock sandwiches to chili to MUCH more, but their "build your own burger" option caught my eye. As a vegetarian, I was pleasantly surprised they had a chickpea burger AND a vegan black bean burger (I'm getting really sick of the blue mango veggie burgers everywhere). I loaded it up with toppings (most were free!), including their zesty horseradish-base house sauce, and split a side of fries and onion rings. Off to the side, they have an array of sauces and spice shakes including buffalo, parmesan garlic, and sour cream an onion to give your sides an extra kick. My chickpea burger was AMAZING. Definitely feeling that homemade love. My boyfriend really enjoyed his burger as well. Onion rings were also undeniably used with fresh onions and not just frozen product dumped in a fryer. We finished off the meal with their signature frozen custard, mint chocolate chip to be exact, which was a refreshing change from regular old ice cream. I also really enjoyed the staffs friendly demeanor (we were greeted twice upon coming in) and knowledge of the menu. I will definitely be coming back here again and again!

Thurston's is located in what used to be the KFC on Forest Avenue. Aside from the original tile floor, this facility has been completely transformed. The inside is posh, with a chalkboard menu, and the color scheme is bright. Upon entering I was greeted promptly and professionally. The menu took a little reading for me to figure out what I wanted. I ended up getting the 1/4 pound burger combo. The combo consisted of a 1/4 pound burger with my choice of vegetables and sauces. Cheese costs an additional 0.50 cents. I was given the option of having a side salad, French fries or onion rings with my burger, which also came with a fountain soda. My total came to $9 and change. My meal was delivered to my table by a friendly staff member and was served in a very timely manner. The burger was topped with lots of fresh vegies and a grilled. bun. I wasn't the biggest fan of the bun. The fries were homemade, crispy and well salted. Impressions: I was most pleased by the cleanliness and spot on customer service. Everyone was extremely friendly and professional. My meal was reasonably priced and was served hot and quickly. I would note that I didn't realize until after I got my food that I was not asked how I wanted my burger cooked, perhaps having the burger cooked to my liking would have increased my enjoyment. As is, the burger was so-so. I would have liked a little bit more seasoning on the patty or a bun with a little more gusto. I was so very impressed with the majority of aspects at this restaurant. I will definitely be giving them another audition in the near future. (seriously check out there summer treats....)

BIG fan! When I am craving a hamburger- this has become our go-to. The meat is awesome- and super tender. The buns ( I think they use local bakery Bottos, big plus) are so soft and pillowy. You can definitely taste the difference in fresh ground meat. Love the choose your toppings/build you own burger....the selections reach beyond just lettuce, tomato, and onion. The fact that they are the only place in town to serve frozen custard...well that just puts it over the top. Would also highly recommend the onion rings.

I was rushing out to grab some quick food before heading back to study and came across Thruston's. As I pulled up I took a look at the menu to find a deal or something interesting. I came across Thurston's Wicked Good Burger and knew I had to try it. It was a soft burger with a good amount of bacon, so I wasn't disappointed. soft texture of the burger came as a surprise to me since I was expecting a rougher patty. Overall, I'd recommend trying this place out if you have a chance to sit and see the food. I scarfed it down in my car, so it was a visual mystery to me, but my gustatory senses were pleased.

When they first opened I had a poor experience with their food... and some unwanted sides; however, Thurston's have stepped up, called themselves out and offered great customer service in response. For taking the initiative and being an honest small business, I believe 3 stars is warranted. I'm sure the food has improved since then as they're customer base appears to be growing! If I return and it rocks, I'll be sure to update this review. Good luck, Thurston's.

I love their hand cut fries. and because I 'm a creature of habits I have only had their burgers.. but they are definitely a new guilty pleasure. The serving sizes are generous I can never finish either fries or burger.. I just might have to try their mini burgers! The staff is always friendly and it's very clean. I usually get take out and they always hand walk it to me.. I like that (:

"This might be one of the best burgers in Portland," is what my friend said, and I have to agree. The burger tasted fresh and was cooked well. You order condiments to your own taste (I like ketchup, mustard, tomato, lettuce and pickle), and the bun was warmed up on the griddle. My wife had a burger with cheese on a gluten free bun and she was very pleased. The french fries and the onion rings were a little disappointing - very oily. The staff is very professional and friendly. Overall, I was pleased.

Meh....expensive, burgers. Nothing special. Service was good, restaurant was clean. Either Lower your price or improve your burgers to get a better rating.

I've been here 4 times thus far. The food is consistently good, Prices are great. Had a 1/4 lb. Cheeseburger loaded with onion rings and a fountain soda for $8.65. Definitely try it for yourself before listening to the naysayers.

Hallelujah! I revisited Thurston's a week or so after my last review complaining about soggy buns and wouldn't you know it...my burger came in a paper wrapper this time!! Huge improvement.. The bun was not soggy at all and I'm much happier. That being said, the burger is still rather lackluster and missing flavor. Disappointing :( it looks like this will be a dessert only place for me as the chocolate chip cookie dough custard I also indulged in was to die for.

The food is excellent here and the service is even better. These people are really enthusiastic about their jobs. Maybe the greatness of the product has something to do with their high motivation and their friendliness. Everything is fresh and delicious here, made to order. The beef burgers are delicious, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. The vegetarian chickpea burger and the vegan black bean burger are yummy too, with lots of contrasting textures. On my latest visit, this afternoon, the gentleman who brought us our food explained that other restaurants have tried to license their veg burgers but he's not sure anyone else could replicate the grilling technique that makes them so special. If you're really twisted you can try my bacontarian friend's favorite, the chickpea burger with avocado and bacon. Onion rings are excellent, thin and crispy and packed with flavor. I've had the custard too, also tasty. I recommend the bacon topping with hot butterscotch. Whatever you pick, it's hard to go wrong at Thurston's.

Who knew a former KFC could be turned into something wonderful. So let's talk burgers. They have a simple set up where you say "burger" and then choose the toppings you want. They range from "I'm boring and I watch CBS comedy's" to "I pirate HBO shows and I have a tattoo that I hide but will show you if you ask". The service has been friendly each time I've gone and everyone was happy with their food. Everything was fresh and the tomatoes which I consider a good judge felt like they were just pulled from a Victory Garden. The only negative is that the view leaves a little to be desired but if you love old train tracks, a poorly placed drugstore, and a DUI bicyclist lighting his last cigarette then face the window!! And if not who cares??!? The food is delicious and they have a drive thru that blocks all of that.

First off, whoever took that photo of the Thurston's Burger with a side of onion rings - those must have been onion rings from the past as they don't look ANYTHING like that anymore. Well, okay - they're onions, and they are rings, but they are so so so so SO TINY that they look more like fried hair elastics than they resemble onion rings. The taste...well, it's almost like they DID take hair elastics and fry them...hmmm... The burger - well, it was fine. I could make a burger as good as that one, but my buns would have been better. The veggie burger (don't ask) - equally non-impressive. Do yourself a favor - burgers are LOADED with calories. So make it count - do NOT go to Thurston's and ruin a perfectly good gut busting occasion with their food. It is just so not worth it. You're better off going to Walgreens down the street and buying four cans of Pickle Pringles... All this and the order took forever to make. As in forever-I'm-slow, not as in forever-because-good-things-take-time. Never again!

  • Boo H.

The quality of the burger could have been better for the price and patty could have been bigger too, at least fit the bun! Nothing special about the frozen cluster. Overall, overpriced for alright burgers & fries. Not worth it and probably won't come back until the quality of the food improves!

I only had the COFFEE CUSTARD during my visit here and after I ate the custard I got extremely sleepy and drowsy with some chest pains., to the point where it really scared me. I'm a person in good physical condition and not sure what was going on after eating their Custard.... anyone else experience this? Will NEVER eat this custard again!!!

There's some weird reviews for Thurston's... they don't sound like they're all talking about the same place. But anyway.... my experience was entirely positive. However, I'll warn you that this review is coming from a vegetarian-minded person so I didn't have a hamburger. I had the veggie burger and fries, and enjoyed every bite. The fries where fresh and hot, a little undersalted but that's easily remedied. The veggie burger was tasty. Maybe not the best veggie burger I've had but certainly a good one. What was really nice was the toppings. I got the house sauce (a slightly spicy mayo-ketchup type sauce), pickles, grilled onions and mushrooms and lettuce and tomato. Everything was fresh and appealing. The combo with a drink was $7.50+tax, and then the kids pack was $4. My kid really liked the mini-burger and it looked pretty decent. The chocolate frozen custard is awesome. I like that they do some local sourcing (although there's scant information about what exactly is locally sourced, but it's a start). My gluten free husband will probably try the salad and burger option next time we go. And the last really good thing is that the people are SO nice. Even the woman taking my order was great about using discretion around my 3 year old. The kids pack comes with ice cream but she didn't come right out and say "what kind of ice cream" she said something "do you want the you know what, or do you want a ticket to get it later?" We took the ticket that we then got the ice cream with after eating dinner. You could even bring it back another time if you wanted. And she didn't offer "chocolate or regular milk" cause if she did I'd have a kid clamoring for chocolate milk on my hands. Instead: "is regular white milk okay?". Bottom line: everyone is very courteous and respectful!

Just had my first burger from Thurston's. Took it to go. Service was over-the-top friendly and efficient, both over the phone and upon arrival. How much for a fully loaded cheddar burger with crispy thick bacon and a generous patty pouring over all sides of a pillow-soft bun, you ask? $7.02 I'll take that over most Portland peninsula burgers any day.

Good burger and fries. Good customer service. Best burger I've had in Portland. Nice thick tender patty and fresh toppings. Skip the chain joints and hit up Thurston's. I'll be back fo sho.

I ordered a number 1 combo with the side salad option and was pretty surprised with what i received. This place delivers simple good quality food that goes beyond what's expected from a fast food restaurant. The side salad was much larger than I thought it would be. My meal both looked and tasted great. The drive-thru was somewhat slow but I feel as though it's understandable based on the quality of the product you're getting. The burger could have been larger. I really appreciated the buttered/toasted/crispy yet fluffy buns. The tomatoes and lettuce seemed very fresh. I would recommend going here over more established drive-thru restaurants if quality is your main concern. Not a great place to go if your goal is to eat large quantities of bad food. The pricing is good and accurate for what you receive.

3 stars is pretty generous and i'm not sure how thurston's managed such a positive aggregate to date the first thing you'll probably notice about thurston's is that it's no longer a kfc, and that should be the warning sign that deters you from entering the building if you are not sufficiently deterred and you make the mistake of entering the building, you will discover that this is easily portland's ugliest restaurant. the color scheme is headache-inducing, and the interior decorator clearly took cues from applebee's and thurston's meal-induced vomit. the burgers are small, overpriced, and meals come with slightly large thimbles of fries. thurston's claims that it does not intend to be a five guys competitor, which is good because thurston's can only compete alongside a guy who mugs you in a back alley and then hands you a small, shitty cheeseburger as an apology. they do have falafel burgers, which are excellent options for vegetarians wanting a sandwich, but these are no less overpriced than their other offerings. if you have to eat lunch in woodfords and absolutely CAN NOT make your way down forest ave to po boys, i suppose this is an acceptable alternative to stealing candy from the free bowls at liberty tax. otherwise, you should probably never eat here if you like having money or eating good food. i've heard that the owner, fred thurston, insisted on a lot of the poorest decisions made at this establishment, and it's a shame, because a good veggie burger in this neighborhood would have been wonderful

The burger was delicious...too delicious I thought for a gluten-free burger. Upon the last bite, I asked the cashier if it was truly gluten-free. It was then that she started to apologize. She forgot and ordered it wrong. (My asthma was acting up when I was eating it, which is why I asked.). I will be suffering for the next 24 hours. Uggggg.

I think these guys got off to a rough start. First experience was pretty mediocre. Second time was some of the best fast food I've had. Burger was bigger and juicier and only $5. Free toppings are numerous and generous. The fries are optional of course and homemade. (but onion rings are not). There are several different hot sauces to choose from as well as many flavored shakers for fries. And the combo is only 7 bucks with fries and drink, the latter includes unsweetened ice tea and no calorie Sobe stuff. I got my food in 5 minutes. Nice convenient clean place too with Adirondack chairs out front. Not a bad place at all!
