Tried (shared) two of their vegetarian sandwiches, and enjoyed both. Fresh mozzarella was great, but the bulkie roll was a bit much. The apple/cran/walnut sandwich was good, unique, but far from gourmet. There was one woman who took our order, made our sandwiches, and then later closed out our check. She was very friendly, but the place was clearly understaffed. She let us know it was going to be a little wait, since it was just her. The sandwiches were good. I'd go back, and would enjoy it, but it wouldn't ever be my first choice place. Nothing was "wrong" with the deli, but nothing was great either.

Used to be a friendly place to grab a sandwich when they were on Spring and Park. My partner and I stopped by around 7pm on a Tuesday, and were rudely told by the guy closing out the register that they were closed. The signage in the deli and hours posted online clearly say open till 9pm. Frustrating. I won't try going in again - why would you? Portland is full of better options, and the only reason to go here is the later hours that they apparently only occasionally keep.

Ugh. Another Maine sandwich shop that fails to deliver. I keep looking for a place that matches the sandwich shops I enjoyed growing up in Maryland. You know, REAL hogie rolls (not the somewhat hot dog size rolls they insist on using in Maine and call it a sub roll). Well, despite really hoping this was that place...alas...it wasn't. If you want a beer cooler that has a mediocre, overpriced, and under delivering sandwich shop in the back, this is your place. Dry bread, lack of meat (Subway is twice as generous), plenty of lettuce, and no flavor. Did I mention over-priced? Save yourself the hassle and walk one more block to Subway. Come on people - make me a real sub!!!!!

Fresh made sandwiches, very friendly staff. Great beer selection for a quick 6 pack pick up. Very reasonable prices. I come by every time I am in Portland.

Maybe if I had gotten my order I would have liked them. After waiting 45 min on a slow Saturday and getting lip from the kitchen I asked for my money back. Was told because my husband tossed his coke bottle into the recycle that we were causing a disturbance. They would be calling the police. Wow talk about customer service. No money no food. Awesome.

Still love this spot! The move up to Congress St was a good venture for these folks! Still the same great packed sandwiches (PMT, Reuben, Patsy Cline, Tuna Salad Plate, etc), great beer and wine selection (Lagunitas, Uinta, Allagash), and friendly staff. The new spot is clean and though it's not the neighborhood store anymore it's HUGE which makes it easier to move around. All in all I'm excited for them and will be going in a lot more!

This is one of those classic cases of "I really want to like this place more than I do." For those of us who love where we live, mom and pop type shops, and businesses that are iconic in our communities it's always difficult to realize they aren't everything you want them to be. I was thrilled to hear The West End Deli was moving into a bigger space. Good on them! When we came in one Saturday afternoon, though, it was dead inside. The guy at the cash register smiled and said he was excited to see people; he believed they'd have heavier traffic once all their signs went up. I hope that's true, because I know people who swear by TWED's sandwiches. I'm just not one of those people. We tried two separate vegetarian sandwiches and neither my partner or I thought they were worth the steep price. We got: The Viper (sliced gruyere cheese, candied walnuts, sprouts, apple slices, romaine, and cranberry vinaigrette on a wrap) - $8.50 - I don't actually know that there was any cheese on this sandwich - we looked. And, unfortunately, it was made up of about 60% to 70% romaine lettuce (all the other ingredients were just suggestions). I ended up not finishing it because it wasn't what I thought I was getting (read: I thought there'd be more than just lettuce, lettuce, and more lettuce on it). The Shellbyville (roasted red pepper, basil, garlic aioli, fresh mozzarella, tomato, and romaine on a baguette) - large $8.50 - This was a little better than The Viper, but it was primarily baguette. We didn't taste the garlic aioli; and, neither the roasted red pepper or the fresh mozzarella seemed all that present. It's a really good thing we bought a bag of chips, because - sadly - it ended up being our "main course" of this meal. So, we paid nearly $20 for two sandwiches that were primarily made up of crusty bread and lettuce. Despite the nice employees, how can I justify coming back again after this? There are just too many other options in town that have better, more plentiful, more cost-effective options for lunch. The West End Deli does have an awesome beer and wine selection, though, and that would be worth coming back for if we were in the area and needed something for our evening/weekend.

This will hurt me more than it'll hurt you, west end deli. Used to be our go-to, but a trend of tall prices and stale bread do not mix. Add to this the dusty wine bottles on the shelf and I think we're done here. I know you can be better because I used to see it every day. Clean up your act, kids.

Like most people, I wanted to like this place. After waiting about 15 minutes for my wrap I was at least hoping that it would be yummy. But no. I ordered the black bean quesadilla wrap and the whole thing was cold, even the cheese wasn't really melted. It was basically way too many cold black beans in slimy sauce which had just come out of a cold can on top of cheese and salsa....gross. Tipping point; when the guy making it wiped sweat off of his head and rolled up the wrap with his hands, no gloves. You're much better off going to Mr. Bagel, Mainley Wraps, Granny's, or Old Port Sandwich Shop for lunch. Wont be back
