We were walking around looking for a late dinner, and stumbled upon Tandoor. Quiet interior, beautiful Indian decor, no TVs, gentle music and extremely delicious food. Friendly service, and everything perfectly spiced, not too heavy, and reasonable portions, so you could also add soup, bread, or other sides for variety without being overfull. A nice little jewel in downtown Portland.

I've often found that most restaurants are better at some things than others; that knowing what to order is as important as avoiding dishes that can disappoint. An example of this is the difference between the 'Lamb Kebab' and the 'Lamb Rogan Josh'. My daughter always orders the kebab and the meat often looks and tastes overdone. I understand...I'm a professional grille master in my own backyard. I know how meat can get away from you if you're not on top of it. Imagine grilling small pieces of meat and trying to fix 25 other meals at the same time...and it continues to cook as it waits to be delivered to your table. Thank Buddha for Nan. But when you know what to order, a dish can just pop in your mouth, like coriander cleansing your palate. At Tandoor, the 'Lamb Rogan Josh' and the 'Mali Kafta' are two dishes that might get your attention. The lamb is sooooo tender, having broken down to succulent pieces in a wonderful korma sauce. You will want to sop up the sauce with Nan for eternity. The 'Mali Kafta' is a vegetarian 'meatball' dish with a brilliant thick tomato based sauce and you'll need yet another order of nan to make a clean plate of the wicked drippings. Chicken Curry, Lamb Curry, Vindaloo, Waterloo, blah, blah, blah...zzzzzzzzzz...Try something new at Tandoor.

We've been going to Tandoor and their sister restaurant Shere Punjab (Brunswick, Maine) for seven years or so and have recently been disappointed. In the past 6 months both my husband and I have eaten (probably) bad chicken that's given us both cases of mild food poisoning on different occasions. It's a shame since we used to really love the place. We've also had occasions where we both order the same dish "hot" and only one of our 2 meals is spicy. They seem to have gone down hill I'm sorry to say.

Tandoor has a great location and are open late. That said, their Chai tea is the best I've ever had- rich and creamy. I also recommend their Rice dishes and the Onion Baji appetizer. Not a fan of the Samosas here as the flavor seems flat and lacks spices. The food comes out quickly and the service has always been good. If you are in the area and craving Indian, give this place a try! Great for take out.

When we were the only people in the restaraunt at 5pm, service was competent and friendly. Once there were more than 4 tables filled the staff could not cope, When the restaraunt was full, service came to a grinding halt. People left because of delays getting to them. I waited 20 minutes to get my check. The food was boring. Chicken was overcooked, there was more tomato taste in the sauces than Indian spices. It was not even mildly hot. It is really too bad that this place isn't better given its terrific location

Best Indian restaurant I've eaten at in years -- and I've eaten at a few. Good atmosphere, good food, good service. Highly recommended. We tried numerous appetizers and entrees, and everything was remarkably delicious. A very pleasant experience.

Great day yesterday working from home. At end of day, I took the Santa Fe in for some recall work and an oil change and tire rotation. I needed to get around on Friday so rented a car from the Enterprise agency across Larabee Road. I chose a Fiat 500. Interesting car. I realized rather than a 2 car garage, I actually have a 4 car garage - if I had 4 Fiat 500s. Johnny K and I took in Tandoor for dinner after my bootcamp class (great workout) at LifeStyles Fitness in Scarborough. A friend had canceled a trip to Portland for dinner. May have been the weather - snow was threatened later in evening, though it was raining at the time. Tandoor was good - warm on a cold rainy night. We shared the recent events over Chicken Masala, Kingfisher, and the Tandoor Special (appetizer) - I don't recall what JK got but he commented on spicy/hot and he can knock down the hot. After dinner, I offered John a ride up to his apartment. I had parked the Fiat in a spot on Market Street - a spot that never in a million years could I have gotten into in any car other than a Smart car or something out of Ringling Bros. circus. When John (not a small person) got in, I hear an audible grown like someone had stepped on his diaphragm and the air had left him. "Oh, by the way, it's small." Twisting around to get the seat belt was an advanced yoga move. Fiat 500 is an ok car. If I had design improvement, it would be to add a strap between the front pillar of the door frame and the inside side of the seat not unlike the narrow plastic or fabric straps used in some electronics (e.g. flashlights, book lights, Walkmans, etc.) to remove the batteries. You could pull on such to magically pop yourself out of the car, I think that would be a good. None of this, of course detracts from the excellent dinner at Tandoor. Thumbs up. Would recommend.

Not half bad, but it's really hard to order something SPICY. That seems wrong, and evil. Savory cheese things in sauce though... I put in mouth! On the other hand they have 22oz beers, so just drink one of those and then... drink another.

tandoorestaurant.com I always seem to end up here when I go to Portland (not often enough). I guess it's a five star because I've usually spent a nice day wandering around the Portland Museum of Art, a grooovy place that makes me feel good to be a human. I'm easy.

Solid Indian food. Standard safe American Indian restaraunt menu. No Chat. There is no chat to be found in Portland. This is a fac that is slowly sinking into the depths of my soul and making me a bit sad to say the least. What is not standard about this place is the leather vests. Yes, you will be served by kind and competent men in black leather (maybe pleather) vests. Its a nice touch. This place has the reputation of being the best in town. Im not sure that its head and shoulders above the rest, but its certainly not worse.

Good Indian Food. I like the Garlic Naan, Aloo Parantha, and almost all the Chicken and Lamb dishes I have tried. The service is a lot better than the first few times I went there. The prices are relatively inexpensive.

Second time we've tried this place. First time, I noted that it was a "top notch indian dining experience" - yum! We went with our young son - and he loved the appetizer portion of chicken tikka (ask for sauce on side), the naan bread and the white rice. We devoured the crisp papadum, with a trio of chutneys, as well as the bread with a terrific mango chutney. We came back and had the malai kofta (soft veggie balls in a delicious masala sauce) -- amazing! The saag paneer (spinach and cheese cubes) was perfectly spiced and smooth; not overly creamy at all. We loved every morsel. Great service and a clean environment. Try it!

I came here on a Friday night around 5:30 and the place was dead empty. As we ate, it began to fill up. The servers were very polite and attentive. We started with garlic naan for $3.50 that came with a few different sauces that were delicious. We ended up ordering another because it was not really enough for 3 people and we really liked it. I ordered the Lamb Rogan Josh for $15 and was delighted. It was slightly sweet and very flavorful. The rice was well prepared. I typically have a very sensitive stomach and I found this to be completely non-aggravating. To be fair, I did ask for a 1 on the spice scale. I give only 4 stars because my dining companions both had the lamb biryani for $15 and one was disappointed. They both ordered it very spicy, but only one was actually spicy enough. They were both a little dry. When asked for more seasoning the waiter obliged easily. I know that I will absolutely go back for the lamb rogan josh.

I had a late dinner on a Friday night during a visit to Portland. The food, service and atmosphere were amazing! Our server was very friendly and delivered excellent service; she checked on our table just the right amount, anticipating our every need. The food was delicious! I had the Paneer Pakora, Garlic Naan, and Chicken Tikka Masala. The flavor was wonderful, fresh, and perfectly spiced. I asked for extra spicy Chicken Tikka Masala and received a side of spicy sauce so that I could add to taste. This was a nice touch as it allowed me to add just the right amount of spice I wanted--I added it all and it was fantastic! The atmosphere was peaceful, nice decor, very clean, and instantly made me feel like this was a good dinner choice. The service and food confirmed my initial impression. This is my first Yelp review and I'm very happy to give Tandoor the highest rating!

Good but if you're looking for spicy look elsewhere. I asked for extra spicy and when it came out it was made mild. Smaller size portions than some indian restaurants that I've been to.

A very cosy place, with soft Indian music on the background and beautiful decor. Delicious food and friendly services. As we were there with kids who are new to Indian food, we ordered "safe" dishes. Chicken tikka was the overwhelming favorite event though tandoori chicken and curry lamb were delicious as well. A variety of sauces and condiments accompanied our food and added that extra kick.

My favorite Indian restaurant in the state of Maine. Service is impeccable and the foods delicious. My go to dish is the chicken tikka masala and obsessed with their mango lassi(it's like a mango smoothie) if you haven't been here, I definitely recommend coming here!

Poorly run business with mediocre food and atmosphere. Took my girlfriend here for dinner as it was her "favorite" Indian place in Portland. Food was middling but not spectacular and the ambiance was jarring due to pounding upstairs (at 7pm on a Friday?). Without what transpired next I would have given Tandoor 3 stars. My check was mistakenly swapped with the table next to mine and I was under charged. No biggie. I pointed it out and it was remedied but I asked for extra receipts just in case, tipped 20% and left. After checking my bank statement 5 days later I noticed there was two charges from Tandoor where there should have been only one. The incorrect charge and credit were there, so that was all set. Problem was the initial charge for my bill was still there as well as the charge for bill + tip. I contacted the restaurant and spoke with our server who also happened to be the manager. He said he was sorry, and would look into it and call me back either way. No call back. Charges still there a few days later. Multiple attempted calls, voice messages, and even a trip a down to Tandoor with bank statements and receipts in hand led to no resolution. My bank is reversing the charges for me. I'll have to make a special trip down to the bank to get the fraud forms notarized further inconveniencing me for a mediocre meal. What a pain. Even if this had been the best Indian food I'd ever had this type of terrible business practice would warrant never giving them another dollar of my money. Plenty of other choices in town. Skip Tandoor.

A really good dinner out. The Naan is warm and the sauces that come with it are always fresh and yummy. Ordered the chicken tikka masala and was not disappointed. Love how they adjusted the spiciness for me without an issue. I will be back.

For years I had wanted to try Tandoor (when I was in high school, it was where all the hip students went to eat), and I finally had my chance. I have to admit, it wasn't as impressive as I had hoped. Yes, the location is superb, and the interior is both comfortable and authentic feeling. The service was relatively unmemorable, however. I had the "Dal Makhani" and it was absolutely DELICIOUS. But the menu was stereotypical of most other Indian restaurants in Maine and the portions were extremely, extremely small (especially for dinner) and extremely, extremely expensive in relation to the portion-size. I feel the same way about this place as I do it's sister restaurant in Brunswick - was it good? Sure. Was it the best in the state of Maine? No. Would I come here again? Sure. Would I drive out of my way for it? No.

I just tried Tandoor a couple of nights ago with some friends and I was not disappointed. The service was great, the food came out quickly and it was delicious. I ordered the Shahajahani Murgh with chicken and some Aloo Nan to go with it. The flavors were wonderful and I will probably get it a little spicier next time. It's nice to have this choice, as I've had some Indian food that started off too spicy to eat and then what do you do? We took our time and enjoyed it, everyone else in my party also liked their dishes. This will be our local favorite for Indian food from now on.
