Always a relaxed space that isn't perfectly renovated, stylized, or designer decorated. I think there's a word for it. It'll come to me......ah, yes. It's genuine. And the coffee is my favorite, the views into Monument square are ideal for people watching or losing your your sense of time for a while.

Let's be clear: this is a throwback to the early coffee joints, where cleanliness and modernity wasn't their primary concern. Old, stained couches; loud, hipster music; and a strange assortment of broken furniture and obsolete equipment. The people behind the counter were not exactly following the Food Code: open shirts, obvious rashes (lots of scratching), no head-coverings, and I didn't see hands washed after handling our cash. The coffee itself was tasty, and well made, but the experience is a bit surreal. Stirrers are actually pieces of dry spaghetti, and all the sweeteners are in jerry-rigged containers with handwritten labels (no packets). Let me say it again: these people know how to make good coffee. And they are super cool. Unfortunately, the "packaging" this place comes in will not satisfy the modern coffee drinker anymore.

I don't have a ton to say about this place as I've just been in it once, earlier tonight, and merely because it was conveniently located right behind a political event in Monument Square I'd been to earlier in the evening. Others prides itself in selling homemade, fair trade cafe-type items. They serve coffee, gelato, some pastries, and a variety of other, pre-packaged drinks. I had coffee and the mint chocolate chip gelato and was pretty impressed with both. Pricing was decent, the atmosphere of the place was cozy and homey (not a lot of seating though--a few tables with 1-2 chairs apiece near the window, and a sofa and easy chair in the center of the dining area), and it's a good place to chill with a cup of coffee or something and just people-watch, as it overlooks Monument Square, which seems to get quite a bit of foot traffic. They do not accept credit/debit cards, and there was a sign in the window saying there was free wifi, but I was unable to find/connect to a network via my iPod touch. I didn't ask about that, though; maybe it was just a technical glitch while I was there. Also, the owner is one of the most endearing people I've met in a long time. I like nice people, so he's a large factor in why I enjoyed myself at his establishment. :)

I had some time to kill in Portland today before boarding a plane to leave Maine. I was recommended to go to this charming hole in the wall coffee joint in Monument square. There's a lot of character here- small yet quaint. The thing that stands out most is the sincere customer service. Brad, the owner, couldn't be a more endearing individual. He noticed me and my giant suitcase and generously offered to keep it in his cafe for the afternoon in order to give me the opportunity to explore the area on my own. The fair trade coffee is delicious- the gelato and sweets are even more delicious! I recommend the cake batter gelato in combination with a gluten free walnut brownie. YUM. I felt at ease and cozy here.

I walked in during my lunch break to try some of their gelato. People have raved about gelato and I wanted to know what it was all about. While no one was behind the counter, I rang the bell and a person nearly sprinted from the back. I grabbed a scoop of Nutella gelato; anytime I find a product that says Nutella, I am hooked. Despite my passionate love for Nutella, I did not find myself in love with the scoop - it seemed to be more chocolate than Nutella.The gelato wasn't bad; it just didn't seem to justify the hefty price for a single scoop. Maybe I do not appreciate the nuances of gelato, but I would probably just walk a couple blocks to Beal's to pick up some regular (less expensive) ice cream.

I'm only visiting from NY so can't say I'll be a regular unfortunately... however the atmosphere is cozy, and I like the mismatched furniture and chairs and warm use of textiles to decorate the space. The women at the counter were really friendly and bubbly too. They have a bunch of teas to choose from, I think 18 that are usually in the rotation and then they had some special blends too. I had a "flu and cold" tea because I completely underestimated the weather and was FREEZING and getting the sniffles! This perked me right up. They have a bunch of baked goods too, and lots were vegan (all vegan? Not sure). If I was hungry I would have tried one or two but I had already had my fill of pastries that morning. Someone mentioned the wi-fi not working; Mine worked perfectly, and I thought that adding the little notes at each table with information on how to connect was useful. Good spot to chill and people watch! Might be back before the weekend is over!

What a nice place to come for a local freshly roasted cup of coffee, gelato, cookies and more. Also nice that it's a dog friendly establishment. Not many are still around.

A friend recommended this place to try some good vegan sorbet (sorbetto). There were 3 flavors when I visited and I went with the lime - which was tart and tangy. I also had another flavor but can't even recall what it was at this point. I enjoyed both flavors and got them in a sugar cone since I hate the waste created by plastic cups. However, I realized that sorbet doesn't really taste god in a cone. I really enjoyed the sorbet but I found it to be a little overpriced. I also picked up a vegan peanut butter and chocolate bar, which I shared with some non-vegan friends and we all loved it. Very rich and decadent. The service was friendly and there was a nice ambiance so I would definitely come back to for tea/sorbet.

Not so much a business as a pet project of some local millionaire. Wonderful and absurd. Fresh roasted fair trade coffee. Homemade gelato and pastries. All of it impressively cheap. They also frequently sell take home containers of old gelato for $3 a pint. Cozy little place, heated by an actual cast iron stove. It's also pretty consistently deserted, for reasons a little baffling to me. Nice people watching from the window tables into Monument Square. Also some chunk (I want to say 10%?) of their profits get donated to a charity every month.

Awesome fresh coffee! Awesome assortment of fresh baked goods- everything you can imagine from chocolate to lemon to fudge! Also, they now have a great selection of gelato with tons of flavor options there too. Great service by the owner, Dan and his staff. Definitely a good stop on your morning or afternoon coffee run.

This indie coffee-and-gelato-shop-with-a-mission is far too underappreciated and overlooked. If you truly believe in the concept of keeping a town independant by supporting local, you also should believe that to "think globally, one must act locally". Others! is that place. Not only do they serve some seriously awesome chai, they also have one of the most perfectly situated coffee shops for people-watching, ambience, and general scenic urban views in town (it overlooks Monument Square - a sight to behold at any time of the year, especially during the farmer's markets and at the holidays when it's all lit up). Beyond that, the owner has a heart of gold. Not only is their coffee certified fair trade, but many of the things they sell - handmade bags and necklaces - come from the impoverished communities he has traveled to and continues to support from afar. Others! really is changing the world one cup of coffee at a time. Stop in chat with the owner for a few minutes about the world, or his mission, or even just gelato. You'll appreciate that you did!

There is no shortage of coffeeshops in Portland, but I make a habit of buying my bulk beans from Others! every month - Bolivian dark roast. This coffeeshop is on a mission - all profits go to charity and you get a ballot to nominate a charity with every purchase. They make their own gelato and roast the coffee right in the store, so you can't get any fresher than that. If you're lucky enough to go in when Brad, the owner, is around, he'll tell you all about the beans, the workers (whom he knows and works directly with) and his mission. It's more than just a coffeeshop! Did I mention they also have a woodstove? So cozy! I love this place.

Coffee with a mission! Love it! We stumbled in here late one night right before they were about to close. Not only was Brad, the owner, kind enough to serve us, but he also told us a lot about the coffee and its fair trade mission. With the roaster in the corner (yes! they roast the beans here!), comfy couches set about, this little coffee shop screams personality. From the walls hang photos of fair trade workers, and they also sell bags made from coffee sacks. I'm writing this review a bit late, but I believe the bags were made from ex-sex-slaves. Okay. All this fair trade talk can be a little heavy. Why not have some gelato? They serve that too! The nutella gelato is delicious. They're also on FourSquare.

I can't get enough of this place. Beyond their tasty organic coffee (and rad apple cider), all of their products are fair trade, they use compostable cups and lids, and their staff is extremely friendly. In short: Great product plus a more than superficial commitment to sustainability and ethical consumption makes this a place well worth your time.

If you've read any of my reviews you know that I love places who don't find your food allergies an issue. Case in point... Others! Very Indie and fair trade this place has options for you. Sweet treats, bagels, tea, coffee that you can watch getting roasted and they make their own Chai base which I can say is awesome! Even though they warn that it may seem slimy. Sit on one of the cozy chairs and watch the goings on outside the window to Monument Square and Congress Street; generally crazy and odd things happen out there.

Needed a place to call an office for a couple of hours and this was perfect. Blends all of my favorites-- jazz and Latin music, fair trade coffee and a selection of gluten free goodies. It's very humble and cozy and the employees are great!!

Definitely a hipster/grunge feel to this little coffee shop. The staff were really cool and nice but whenever I go into a place like this I feel like I'm being judged for wearing business casual and contributing to The System and being friends with The Man. (It may be all in my head though) ;) Anyway the coffee is decent and it's about 50 steps from my office so I will be back. Coffee needs trump social conventions every day!

Yummy gelato but VERY SMALL scoops! It was good but wicked expensive for a little cup. My kids got 2 flavors and had less then 1/2 a scoop of each... not worth it
