I'm very surprised at the good reviews for this place here on Yelp...are you guys being paid to do this?? Does anyone here know what Al Dente means? Apparently their chef doesn't. Amazing that a place like this can stay in business and compete with all the good restaurant choices Portland has to offer. The service was slow and lousy. And the food was totally mediocre. I couldn't even eat what I ordered...the pasta was overcooked for one. I realize it's a Portland landmark but I was extremely disappointed. Yes, the portions were huge but that doesn't mean a thing when the food tastes bad.

We went back again and had the 6 course special...let me tell ya, this place just blows it out of the water. The wait staff is amazing (he even remembered us from last time!) Had baked zitti and puttanesca, both delicious. Also had calamari stuff with crab (YUM!), fantastic salads, bruschetta and the best house made peach gelato that I've had since Rome. This place is definitely a keeper.

Excellent wait staff and the portions are very generous. The veal was very high quality and well prepared. Unfortunately the flavors of the food are a bit boring. The marinara is underseasoned, and the marsalla is not as flavorful as it could be. The garlic bread was good though.

My boyfriend and I had a great dinner here on Saturday night! We had the bruschetta special and meatballs to start. The bruschetta ingredients were fresh, while the meatballs were authentic and especially delicious! Our main courses were just as good. The service was prompt and efficient, even when the dining room was full. I'll be back, not just for the good food, but also for the atomsphere. This place is the real deal. Highly recommended!

Went there with friends last night. It was, for the most part, very good. The portions were generous and tasty. I had the Shrimp Portofino, one of their original dishes, and it was great. Really fresh jumbo shrimp, cooked perfectly, sauteed with spinach, garlic, olive oil and butter over angel hair pasta. Hubby had the steak and pasta. Steak on menu as 9 oz. sirloin strip, actually came as a fairly thin porterhouse. Still, perfectly cooked, generous portion, delicious. He said the pasta and sauce were very good. Our friends enjoyed their meals as well. Drawbacks: onion soup was unique and tasty, but only warm, not hot. Salad was decent, but onion, peppers, and cucumber pieces cut too large. Bruscetta, again tasty, but too much liquid in bottom of dish, and tomato pieces cut too large. Still, would definitely return. Not perfect, but very good overall.

I've driven by this restaurant a thousand times and finally decided to try it out. From the front entrance it seems a bit unwelcoming. It's dark, there aren't any windows...I noticed driving around looking for a parking spot that they have a small parking lot in the back. SMALL LOT. I thought I was going to have to crawl out the window to get out of the car. Once I talked myself out of the fact that I would come back out with a massive door ding or foot prints up the hood where someone else had to crawl through their car window, I went to the back door. To get in you walk through some old iron fencing that seems to be all around the building. I pulled on the door and it was locked? A small note said to ring the door buzzer for entrance. Ring ring, the door clicks and in we go. I really expected to have someone greet us upon entrance. Nobody was around. To the left was a dark room, straight ahead were the restrooms and to the right a set of stairs. Up we went noticing the voices and sounds of clanking dinnerware. After the climb and a walk down a hallway that had the decor and colors of the 60's and 70's. we came upon the bar. As we walked into the bar, from the back, the host was coming around asking if we were there for dinner. He informed us where the coat room was located and then we were brought into the dining area to be seated. The room was smaller than I expected with the decor again from the sixties. From here to shorten this up, the waiter came over and introduced himself. We Looked at the menu, and had a very enjoyable dining experience. The eggplant parm with spaghetti was huge and quite tasty, the mushroom ravioli with prosciutto also tasty. No overpowering flavors. Basic Italian food with no surprises. The wait staff were very friendly and the price was affordable. Ill check it out again for sure.

Celebrated our anniversary last night with dinner at Maria's Ristorante.... Everything from the table service to the marvelous food made our special day turn out simply wonderful! Sonny will treat you like family and Tony in the kitchen is a maestro with food that you don't want to miss...we were there for three hours and enjoyed every second of it including the live singing from Paul in the lounge. (sang My Way totally Italian for us!!) ...do your taste buds a favor and don't miss this fine Portland gem that after dining, you feel like you visited with a long lost friend! Cheers!

Always a great meal and good times at Maria's. It is like going to an Italian restaurant in NYC. Actually, it reminds me of restaurants I've been to when visiting family in Italy. The food is fresh and prepared to order. Owner and staff are like family. You are never rushed through your dinner. Always try the specials. You will be happy you did.

First I want to say that we had a Groupon which we tried to use a few times but due to Maria's vacation and our vacation and other circumstances it expired. I called and talked to Anthony and he was very nice and said, "no problem! Just tell the server that Anthony said it is okay." So we went last Thursday and had a fabulous experience. We had the best waiter we've ever had. He was super attentive and had a great personality. The food is prepared to order and it shows. Holy cow authentic Italian. Beat meatballs in Portland and the eggplant was to die for! We will surely be back.
