I love this place and everything about it. It was decorated similar to the North Conway store. The hostess, waiter and all other staff were wicked upbeat and seemed genuinely excited to be at work. The pizza guy at the oven was chopping wood and the restaurant was toasty...it was the prefect experience on a cold winter day. It might not be conventional pizza in the sense that some don't consider it pizza because it isn't dripping in artery clogging grease and that the meat actually tastes like meat and not nitrates...but I consider it the ultimate pizza indulgence. Where else can you get a great quality organic pizza cooked in an oven in front of you. Unlike Rustic Kitchen that uses a gas powered oven and adds wood to it, this is legit wood fired. My companion and I got the house salad with goat cheese. I believe this maybe the best salad ever. If you know of a better tasting salad please let me know. We also got the Casco Bay community and Nitrate free pepperoni and mushroom pizza. Both flatbreads were amazing and cooked to perfection. I wish there was a Flatbread place closer to Boston.

This place is great - I always get the special and am never disappointed. My friend got the gluten-free crust and loved it. They even have g-free desserts - such a nice change!

Every time I've been to Flatbread Company, I've not been disappointed. For some reason, folks refuse to call it pizza, but whatever it is, it's what I like when I want pizza. Most recently, we got one with caramelized onions and mushrooms. Too often when we get pizza the mushrooms are rubbery and the onions are raw, but here they were perfectly done. Many of the dishes are made with fresh organic ingredients. We've had the organic salad several times and it's exact composition varies from season to season, but it's always good. This is one restaurant that knows how to dress a salad without drowning it in dressing. The atmosphere is fun and hip and hippy, with beautiful views over the water and the crowd definitely tends toward the college set. Every time but this latest we've had a very long wait with people stacked up outside the door. The place is just that good. However, we went on a Sunday afternoon in late December and we were seated immediately. There were also several other families with small children so it seems to be a family friendly place. Do yourself a favor: If you're in Portland and you like pizza/flatbread and/or are a vegetarian (you don't have to be; I'm not) and/or you favor organic ingredients (you don't have to; I do), then stop at the Flatbread Company and wait as long as you have to. You won't regret it.

I had a great experience at Flatbread. I loved the atmosphere of this place. It's a funky/cool/hippy place but the decor has a polished feel. The restaurant is on the water and is very centrally located for a post-dinner walk. I had the community pizza. I liked it. It may have lacked flavor, but it was good pizza overall. I will definitely return to Flatbread as soon as I can. Good for a chill night with friends or family.

The food (pizza, no cheese, yummy toppings) was good. It looked like they stuck to 3 things: beer, pizza, and salads. Simplicity is a secret to consistency. Above the great food, I love the ambiance and the wait staff. So friendly, and a pleasure to watch their rapport with each other.

I love the flatbread company like no other pizza place. Their stuff is ALWAYS the freshest and tastiest and most if not all of the ingredients are local. We started with the salad with seaweed, carrots, mesclun, onion and goat cheese. It was unreal. The pizzas, just as in the North Conway restaurant, were delicious and the service ultra-relaxed and friendly. The only reason i give it a 4 is because their menu seems smaller to me than the North Conway one and was missing my all time fave: the chevre cheese with kalamata olives and pesto. Maybe this is because they do everything local??? Not sure, but it SHOULD be added.

The pizza here is totally rad, and while I've eaten so much pizza in my lifetime that it's hard to say which location provides the best, Flatbread is definitely in the top echelon. While I generally tend to order pizza with some sort of meat on it--pepperoni or chicken, usually--Flatbread serves up a lot of vegetarian options that have blown my mind, excited my taste buds, and left me forgetting my proclivity toward eating dead animals. My personal recommendation: Jay's Heart. Take an organic wheat flatbread crust, baked to perfection in their brick oven, and cover it with wood-fired cauldron tomato sauce, whole milk mozzarella, parmesan, and herbs. It's awesome. Another memorable pizza I've ordered there was one of their veggie specials, not sure of the name. Basically, it's their aforementioned organic wheat flatbread and assorted cheeses, but with an addition of fresh broccoli, carrots, and hummus sauce. Hummus sauce? Yes, you read that correctly. And yes, it was as orgasmic as it sounds. I do have to admit I may have a bit of a bias, since a bunch of my friends work there. But honestly, I'm not exaggerating on the quality of the pizza--it's extremely tasty. In closing, to quote every book review on Reading Rainbow ever, "You don't have to take my word for it..." Try it for yourself. Go to Flatbread, eat some pizza.

Simply yummy delicious stuff to be found here. Try their salads..organic and tasty!! And the oven baked flat bread pizzas are to die for..try the 'coevolution'.. It's too good! Must visit place if you are in Portland!

Not only the best pizza in the world but also a mighty good salad. They put seaweed and sesames on it - yum. The pizza is light and delicious made with all organic ingredients. I guess you could call it healthy pizza. When you have pizza at another joint you have 2 or 3 slices. Here, you eat a whole pie. It is so good you keep on munching. My favorite is the sausage pizza -- the sausage is made at flatbreads -- actually all the meat is cured there. Everyone I go with gets the Equilibrium; a vegetarian's heaven. The ambiance is one that gives it a Maine feel. Inside is a old warehouse feel. The back deck is looking out on the bay. A great way to spend a weekend lunch with an Allagash beer in hand.

Natural pizza baked in a primitive bread oven right in the dining room!! These people are heath food nuts and conscious food nuts and the pizza here is spiritual. Who knew this New Yorker could find good pizza in Maine?!! The place is very popular, so make reservations. You might like to take the time to read the inspirational restaurant history murals on the walls. Also, the place is family friendly! What do you like on your pizza? After hiking in Worcester, MA the other weekend I discovered spirally baby ferns on the forest floor. Apparently these are called fiddleheads, it is fiddlehead season, and people hunt for these things! I ate fiddleheads on a pizza in Portland Maine!!! YUM--WOW. Flat-bread sells clean, organic local produce and free range meats. All major ingredients are made in-house. Fresh sause, people. Flatbread's uses spring water, organic flour, kosher salt and real cake yeast to make pizza dough. There are fresh oregeno plants on the tables, you can season your own meal! I also recommed the Shipyard Summer ale, a light citrusy brew, which is made literally around the corner at the Shipyard Brewery. Don't be shy, because you might have to share the the outdoor umbrella patio tables, which are right on the port overlooking the bay and ships; now that is the Maine idea!

Excellent pizza, with organic, very fresh ingredients. The location is fantastic, right down on the water. Good beer menu, reasonable wine selection. The atmosphere is very cozy. Perfect for a date, or a Saturday afternoon down in the Old Port.

Some of my all time favorite pizza. Great organic / local / Maine vibe. Really cool space - kind of like a summer camp dining room. Right on the water and you can watch the staff making pizza's in the giant oven. Did I mention AMAZING pizza?

We tried to go here on a Friday night without calling ahead. Big mistake. Informed of a 1-hour wait, we went elsewhere. But the aroma coming from the Flatbread, inside and out, made me vow not to leave Portland without sampling their culinary wares. We got takeout for lunch the next day, and took it back to our hotel across the street -- just a simple cheese pizza for the boys. They loved it, and we loved Flatbread for it. We are itching to return to sample their more complex offerings. There's not a single thing on their menu I wouldn't try. The wood-fired aroma alone makes it worth the trip. I have ample occasion to travel to Portsmouth, NH, for business, so I am etching that location in permanent marker on my dining wish list.

Flatbread was good but our waitress was amazing. We loved her. We were starving and they don't have appetizers, but she said they had just made a "mistake pizza" and she brought us out two slices and didn't charge us.

My favorite pizza in Portland! i usually get the sundried tomato and mozzerella pie and its soooooo yummy! the service is always friendly and its entertaining watching the boys make your pizza in the oven.

Pizzza was just okay. Maybe I was here on an "off" night. Atmosphere is great. Big open building with many table. good bar, great salad. Pizza was dry. Everyone had something different and it was all not really that good.

Warm atmosphere and delicious, organic ingredients. The only pizza joint where you leave feeling healthy and fully satisfied. The best thin-crust pizza in Portland.

Best pizza place I've ever been to outside Italy! Everything is wood-fired and the smell is to-die-for. The casual atmosphere made of natural materials like wood and stone is ideal for a relaxing and fun meal with friends. You can sit on the dock in the back in the summertime. Recommendations: homemade lemonade, house salad, the pizza (can't remember the name) that has goat cheese, rosemary, caramelized onions, and olives. Don't forget an ice cream sundae for dessert made with a brownie, vanilla ice cream and cinnamon on top!

My husband, young son and I went to Flatbread Company for lunch on St. Patrick's Day while we were visiting Portland. The restaurant itself is fine. It has a nice view of the water and the seating is comfortable. The decor is a little tired looking, but overall is fine. Our server was attentive and the restaurant was very kid friendly which worked well for us. The menu is fairly limited since they try to stick to locally sourced/seasonal ingredients. We had a large flatbread - half sausage/onion and half mushroom, onion which was ok. I thought the mushroom side was somewhat bland and the dough was soggy (I expected it to be really crispy since they emphasize that it's flatbread, not pizza).

I don't really have anything to add that hasn't already been said very well in the other reviews. This place is a great. The flatbreads are delicious and organic -- a great option for vegetarians and vegans. It's a great place for groups The wait is usually pretty long, so go early.

  • Jennifer S.

Although I wouldn't say (as another reviewer did) "Best pizza place I've ever been to outside Italy!", I would say it's the best in Maine. Keep in mind though that it is all organic, local food. That said, the crust is thinner than your average Pizza Hut, etc. Try the pepperoni, yum. Salads were also good and have a variety of greens. Great beer selection. Also right along the Old Port area so they have a great port side view of the water.

If it were legal for me to marry an inanimate object, it would be their sausage & sundried tomato pizza. This place is one of my top 3 places in Portland. I've never had a bad meal here & the service is always friendly. Favorite special (please make this a permanent menu item!): Bacon, scallops, spinach, parmesean, & herbs. It's the best thing to happen to me. Ever. Their salad is fantastic too. You MUST get it with the goat cheese! In conclusion, I am in lust with Flatbread. I would create a "pizza-the-hut"-esque love child if it were physically possible... And then I would eat it.

Fantastic! Friendly staff, tasty food, great atmosphere - I really can't say enough good things about this place. I recommend the house salad with blue cheese and a sausage flatbread followed by their brownie and ice cream dessert. Great selection of local microbrews as well. Plus, they serve from 11:00 on so you can grab any meal but breakfast!

A good standby for Portlanders, and a nice place to bring out of town guests who want to eat some place casual. The hot lemonade with maple syrup is delicious and the nitrate-free pepperoni flatbread is my all time favorite, and I'm not a pepperoni eater at all. It's more crumbly, almost like ground beef, and super salty and flavorful.

Love it, fun to watch the groovy kids make a pie in the oven, nice service, very hard benches...ouchy. Beer and wine only, sadly, but the pizza is great, and salads are done well. Great place to bring your brats as well.

Good food. The tap list is kind of small - but I guess I've been spoiled by the one it's modeled after in Burlington, VT. It can be a long wait to get a table.

Tasty! Wood-fired oven flatbread with organic tasty toppings. Worth the extra buck. If you've ever purchased the overpriced cardboard at WholeFoods, you owe it to yourself to try Flatbread.

I actually just went to Flatbread for dinner tonight, and as always I was impressed. Even on a January night, it was very crowded - luckily my friend called ahead to get on the waiting list and we only ended up waiting about 10 minutes to be seated. Being that we were starving, we opted to start with dessert and finish with pizza. Our waitress was wonderful and we were promptly brought three huge chocolate chip banana bread sundaes (the brownie sundaes are also to die for) and we followed up with a Jay's heart (classic cheese with sauce.) I am a creature of habit, I admit, so I usually order the Jay's Heart, but their veggie specials always sound awesome, the Coevolution is great too, and any pizza with the mashed potatoes. If you're in Portland and want pizza, this is definitely the place to go. The atmosphere is unbeatable, the pizza is delicious, the service quirky and fun...not Maine's typical restaurant.

This is a great place if you are in a rush to get something to eat. It's easy to get to especially if you park in the gargae next door. The pizza dough is very bread-like and less pizza dough. It reminds of fried dough with sauce on it. It's tastes good after a 2 hour drive from Boston, but not my choice for best pizza in Portland, ME. I still am looking for a great pizza in Portland.

This is my first stop when I get off the bus in Portland. No messing around. Sexy hippie waitresses, healthy, good-for-the-planet pizzas, a nice bar while you're waiting for a table (which can be a very long time. expect at least 45 minute wait on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays during prime time). The restaurant is right next to the water in the Old Port - it's a huge, spacious place with a stone fireplace, and walls covered with kids' anti-war/earth posters. When I took my mom here, there was a fiddle concert that started when we'd been served our brownie fudge a'la mode dessert. She loved it.

I love Flatbread's pizza. Wood oven fresh (you can see them throw it in) with great ingredients. Try the Punctuated Equilibrium, with kalamata olives and (I believe) sun dried tomatoes and other yummy ingredients. I give it only three stars because of the atmosphere. Super family friendly, always bustling with kids. It is one huge room, that while pretty, carries sound like a mo'fo and makes those of us with sensitive ears distracted from the ones they love. I like the summer when you can sit out back. I want to like the winter when it is dark, fireplace-y and warm, but the constant noise keeps me away.

i am VERY enthusiastic about this place! the pizza is natural and fresh and tasty as hell! it's warm and cozy and a great place to chill with friends! (have i said "and" enough yet?) there lemonade is great! no sugar to sweeten it. it's sweetened with maple syrup! sounds weird i know, but it's the best! i make it myself now. there's no way you won't enjoy this place!

It was a cold winter night and we wanted pizza! It was a bit chilly inside, but the atmosphere was warm and friendly. They had a big wood fired oven where they cooked the pizzas. It stood in plain view right next to the tables. You could watch the kitchen staff making the pizzas right in front of you. The servers were informative and friendly (all dressed in hippie garb). We ate the basic salad of organic mixed greens, etc. Then we ordered a pizza which was delicious.

Nice place for a pizza, great place to hang out w/ family & good service. I am from the NYC area so can't say all the unorthodox combos appealed to me, but all in all a great place. And the iced tea w/ maple syrup is truly addictive.

Yummy! I love thin crust on my pizza so I was happy. I had a mushroom, cheese and my fiance has the jerk pork/pineapple special. Good wine selections, and oh so afffordable. This place can be very loud (lots of kids running about when we were there--8PM on a Friday nite!) so bring ear plugs and patience.

This place is right on the main tourist drag, and yes for you arrogant san franciscans, portland maine does have people that visit just for fun. Why five stars? Its not the pizza. The pizza is great, original, inventive and fresh, but I have had better. Tbe back deck in combination with the pizza wins this place five stars. I mean there is nothing like sitting on a wooden dock in new england sipping a beer with a buddy while your friend (who happens to be a girl with limited reserves of body fat) indulges in a hot lemonade. The hot lemonade was amazing (believe it or not) and the view was spectacular. The pizza is really great too, and your hippy, homemade clothes wearing waitress will be happy to explain the simple yet patchwork like menu to you. hummus on pizza, yeah, they make it work at flatbreads.

A great place to eat flatbread and drink beer on tap. Excellent flatbread (particularly the specials) in a relaxing environment. Just be aware that they fill up quick around 6pm and then you're going to be waiting.

Well the idea is clever but the pizza is not so great. It's an adorably decorated hippie shack with children's crayon drawings on the wall and a HUGE clay oven in the middle of the restaurant. They chop the firewood by hand - right in front of you. The service is great. The pizza falls a little by the wayside, though. Heavy ingredients make what's supposed to be a healthy alternative to regular pizza pies too much to stomach. But, I did enjoy the Maple smoked sausage flatbread pizza - even if it did make my tummy rumble later on.

It's been a few year, but I finally got back to Portland This time with my teenage son in tow. He liked the space and seeing the oven. But like most teens ', was not fully appreciating the Epicurus experience that was about to punch him in the mouth. The special was prosciutto with red onions, dried cranberries, blue cheese, mozzarella, Parmesan , herbs and a balsamic honey reduction His reaction sums it up. " the was the best pizza I've ever eaten! I'd drive 10 hours ago to eat it. "

A return after a long time. Great service. Artisan crafted pizza, fired in a brick oven within the restaurant. Even with the high traffic during the busy season, you still get decent service from the young wait staff. Worth the wait. Go hungry!

We were in Portland on Vacation and were looking for good places to eat, our Internet search told us the Flatbread Company would be a good choice. I am 52, I had, without a doubt, the best pizza I have ever had in my life, bar none. I had the mushroom pepperoni, added red peppers and extra Pepperoni. It was so good, I ordered a second one to take home as we were leaving the next day. The service was friendly and relaxed and on the ball. I loved it and will go back some day.

Incredible pizza, they are cooked in wood burning ovens you can see from your seat (and helped keep the lady friend warm). All-natural ingredients, the nitrate free pepperoni is to die for! 2 large pizzas stuffed 3 very hungry travelers with some room for leftovers. Customer Service is great, the manager checked in several times as well as our waitress who was very friendly and attentive. Come here for a great night of pizza! Oh and all the Beers are from local Maine Breweries, a definite delicious plus!

Actually got to this point: I was NOT DOWN for anymore lobster on this Maine trip. Too much of a good thing really exists. So naturally, pizza/flatbread sounded perfect. I read all the glowing reviews about this place so I convinced my wife with pictures of their amazing salads (she actually hates pizza. Yes, it is possible) that this was the perfect place to eat after we stepped off the ferry from Peaks Island. And really to sum up this review, my pizza hating wife swore she would only try one slice but could not hold back from actually having a second slice of the Casco Bay Community flatbread with maple syrup sausage added. That and the organic salad with goat cheese salad really hit the spot. And the Banana Bread sundae capped off a perfect meal.

This restaurant was recommended by a local as the best pizza in Portland, so we had to try it. Everything is organic and locally grown. My husband likes a very traditional pizza so he thought it was good but not great. I really liked my sausage and mushroom pizza. We each ate most of our small pizzas. The menu stated 8 inches but it seemed larger.

We're in Portland Maine (from Kansas City) for a special visit, our third in a year. We're in Old Port on Commercial St., trying to decide where to eat/have a beer, and checking out Yelp reviews to help. And though Yelp helps, a local sees us staring at our phones (probably strange to see 50+ year old folks doing this) and says insightfully - "Trying to decide where to eat or drink for dinner?" We respond affirmatively, suddenly reconnecting with reality vs. Yelp (sorry Yelp!) She says, "Well, most places here are good, but I'm headed to Flatbread - it's great." Ok - it's pizza. We were looking for seafood, given our home base. Still - it's a recommendation, and we follow her, and talk, and wow - it's real life. We get seated quickly - so here's where five stars begins. Great pizza (flatbread), vegan options, friendly for dogs (we petted two), big picnic tables where you must sit with someone else (omg, real social interaction again) and outside where you could view the wharf/ports. We talk to the couple with two children about their lives, and our books. We talk to the next table about living in Portland, and the Casco Bay islands. The dinner becomes an experience. But - ok, four stars. Then the fifth. I lived near Portland (Brunswick Maine) as a child. They were serving blueberry salad (a salad topped with fresh blueberries) and I was full, but related how I picked fresh blueberries as a child - almost half a century ago. The waitress listened, as she had also participated in our multi-table discussion. We were finished, about to ask for the check, when the waitress arrived - with a small bowl of fresh blueberries, and a side of whipped cream. "Here is your memory." Five stars.

It's just not my favorite place to be but I never hate it. The flatbread is always good but sometimes, I want something more traditional and none of their flatbreads ever scream out to me unless it's one of the nights there is a special I really like. I agree that the service sucks a lot of the time. The servers always come off to me as pretty rude and also not so attentive. What I do like is their patio space - it's a good casual option when people are visiting and you know it won't be bad. The inside is cozy in the winter but it's not my favorite atmosphere. It seems to be a good place to take kids.

You initially see the huge Casco Bay Ferry Building on Commercial St. before you see the Flatbread Company on the right side. It took us a while to find parking, but when we got to the restaurant, there were large amounts of people waiting and where you saw lobster boats come in and out of the wharf. There was a bar opening along the side of the building, and my wife got some Ginger Ale & water, and while this was happening, the hostess called our name. I offered to pay for the drinks, and the bartender just looked at us with a smile, and said it was on the house! The menu had drawings from kids on the outside, which was a cool touch. They offered a variety of salads, flatbreads, and a dessert. Our waitress told us about their different specials, but we ended up ordering a large veggie flatbread. There was a couple next to us who got their order wrong, and the waitress fixed it immediately, as she placed another order for what they wanted. The manager came out, and comped their order. It was an amazing sight. You just don't see customer service any better. If we ever make it back this way again, this is definitely one of the restaurants we'd go to.

We had a really great time at the Flatbread Company. We honestly really didn't have this place singled out in our trip to Portland, Maine. However, when we tried a few spots we have bookmarked and the wait was too long, we made are way to Flatbread. We were surprised that upon arrival the place was packed but the wait was manageable 15minutes. The fact that it was full of patrons suggested the food has to be good. After a few minutes of reading reviews I knew we were going to have a good meal. We went with the Casco Bay Community Flatbread & Pepperoni Mushroom. Both were fantastic. Now they both come with mushrooms but I don't like those so I ordered them without. No worries there packed with flavor. The Casco was my favorite of the two, wood fired crust with tomato sauce mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, garlic and my favorite part the caramelized onions! Fresh fresh ingredients and loaded with flavor, especially there blend of herbs which you can clearly taste. Bread was perfect not over done, in the wood fire oven just the right amount of time. We added bacon to the pizza which gave it a great edge. The Pepperoni, was pretty much the same minus the onions add the Pepperoni. Equally as great but I prefer onions over the pepperoni Our waitress was really attentive and made sure we had plenty of water and soda the entire time. the restaurant can be loud but it fits the ambiance since it's right on the water and has that pub type feel to it. No complaints !

My boyfriend and I rarely go out on dates, but we were celebrating and decided to give this chain a try. As soon as we walked in, the hostess told us it would be about a 30 minute wait and I knew how much my boyfriend really wanted to try it out, so we waited and I am so glad we did!!! That night was a full house and it was loud, but I like loud. Everyone was having a good time with their families, friends and significant others. The bar area is a tad small, but quaint. I asked for a tasting on the beers they had on tap and Zach told me that if I didn't like the third tasting, then beer wasn't for me. Zach was pretty much right.....beer isn't for me. We were seated by the wood fire area where the pizzas are made and I was so excited! I was because I saw the photos of the guys making the pizza and I told myself....I wanna sit near the magic :) Alex was our server that night and she was FANTASTIC, ATTENTIVE, PATIENT, AND KIND. You're probably wondering why the caps, right? Well, I have never had a server with all those great qualities and her customer service was beyond excellent. We had the Punctured Equilibrium and Casco Bay Community flatbreads which are both vegetarian. Punctured Equilibrium comes with olives, but I despise the taste of and subbed it for spinach instead. This flatbread comes without sauce and my palate did a happy dance! The caramelized onions, rosemary, goat cheese, fire roasted red peppers, mozzarella, and garlic oil are ingredients that compliment each other very much! Yes, there was no sauce, but the oil and caramelized onions combined made up for it. The Casco Bay Community flatbread comes with tomato sauce, organic caramelized onions, organic mushrooms, mozzarella, parmesan, and garlic oil, This flatbread is my second favorite. Don't get me wrong, the combination of ingredients are tasteful, but it was too cheesy for me. It was my first time going, so who knows....my taste buds might go for the Casco Bay Community flatbread next time. I'll definitely be back and thanks Alex for making the experience wonderful!

The pizza is good, not many toppings so I gave it a 4/5. I love how all the ingredients are local and mostly organic. I go there because I support that. Plenty of GF options. Goat cheese is basically on everything and to me, that is heaven. You can sit out on the dock and watch the boats come in. Great kid friendly place, they can watch the kitchen and brick oven do their magic.

Heard a lot about this place. Handmade clay oven, awesome views, great atmosphere. But the main reason to go are the pizzas. Staff feels like a family and walks you through what they have. We had a pizza, a topping was forgotten and we got the entire pizza for free. Almost too friendly, we tried to pay. Will definitely be back and can recommend to any viaitor of Portland.

I love the vibe, service and product at Flatbread Co. I tried the cheese & herb and I was thrilled with it. I love the crispiness of the flatbread crust and the flavor combinations they offer are sophisticated and subtle. Although I didn't order one of the flatbreads with tomato sauce, I did try a bit of my friend's custom dish and it was fabulous - how can you not love a tomato sauce that's cooked in a cauldron? As I was enjoying my meal, I had the strangest sense of déjà vu and then I realized that I wasn't going crazy (not usually the case) - I'd actually been to Flatbread & Company before.... Only I was in British Columbia! Flatbread & Co has an outpost in one of my favorite places on Earth - Whistler! One note on this location - it can be hard to find because they don't have any frontage on Commercial Street. Just look for the sign out front and head down the dock on the left hand side.

This is the least "chainiest" chain I know! Sat on the deck overlooking the water and had a salad and their casco bay pizza with roasted red peppers. The atmosphere was great and we got seated right away which is rare as this place usually has a wait. Our waiter was charming and the food was perfect! Tip: dip your crust in the salad dressing, and when it isn't 90 degrees give their warm lemonade a try - they add maple syrup and it is sooooooo good!

We've been to Flatbread a dozen times or so in our last 5 visits to Portland and we ALWAYS love our meals here. This is our second visit this trip and we had the same two things - an organic salad with Sunset acres goat cheese and the homemade sausage flatbread. And it was delicious, as always. Me and my wife split it, and finished everything - polished off the plates! The place is family friendly and there's always adorable little ones toddling about or watching the real wood-burning oven. There's a back deck that is right on the water and a wrap around bar, where you can order drinks from outside, while waiting for a table or just enjoying the salty air while watching the boats come in. Unpretentious, delicious, natural, locally sourced food - served by a really great staff - I just thought, I'd add my 2 cents to all the others who have enjoyed their visit to Flatbread! Thanks for the great experience, guys, and special thanks to our waitress, Cynthia, who just struck me as a genuinely nice person. Have a great summer!

I love the decor. Kinda hippy, but not overwhelming. The same can't be said for the staff...she did a great job but was just SO awkward, at least we laughed about it after. We thought she was on drugs. We got the specials (meat and veggie) and the Punctuated Equilibrium and all were fantastic. The toppings needed to be spread out a bit more, but sometimes they move after you cook them. We got two maple lemonades and both tasted different, so they need to work on consistency for measurements there. That being said. Mine had less maple and I loved it because it was like a kiss of maple, and the other had more maple and tasted like nothing I had ever had.

I love Flatbread for their consistency, ability to create-you-own pizzas and their beet + goat cheese salad. My boyfriend and I popped in last Friday night and it was crowded (as expected), we hung out by the bar and had a few drinks, we were told 30-40 minutes, I went and checked after 30 minutes and we still had 4 parties in front of us, 2 seats at the bar opened up and we snagged those and ate up there. The bartender was super knowledgeable about the drinks and food, attentive and friendly. Definitely a go-to spot.

I've spent so much time at Flatbread Company over the years that I think I might have actually entered a common law marriage with it. Under normal circumstances it might seem weird to be married to a restaurant (common law or otherwise), but the flatbread here is just too damned delicious to think about that. In the past 10+ years, I've been here for: - A 40th birthday party - other, less notable birthday parties - work functions - first dates - a second date - take out - beers at the bar - family get-togethers - other events and one-off visits, too frequent and/or uninteresting to recall I can't remember a single instance in any of those visits that the flatbread wasn't EXCELLENT or the service TOP NOTCH. The 40th birthday party was probably the most challenging, but the service Flatbread provided with sectioning off part of the restaurant and making sure there was always a beer in my hand throughout the night (and remembering which beers I had ordered when separating the check) was as seamless as it was impressive. Most recently my family and I impulsively stopped by (that's how we roll) on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and ordered two large flatbreads for takeout. The hostess entered them into the computer, and then 15 minutes later we were walking out with boxes filled with fresh, piping-hot flatbread in our hands. I've also made a stop at the Flatbread Company-cum-bowling alley in Somerville, MA. As you can imagine, the flatbread is just as good (and the wait is just as long, especially if you plan to bowl). I love how they complement their flatbread offerings with a wide variety of local beers. My favorite flatbread will always be the Punctuated Equilibrium. The ingredients and flavor combination blew my mind 10+ years ago, and it continues to be one of the best flatbreads - or ANY pizza, for that matter - I've ever had.

Was on our way to Bar Harbor from Boston. Needed a bite to eat on the way. Found this little gem. Sat outside on the deck. Dog friendly...missing our golden retriever ... Great local ingredients. Yummy salad and wood stove oven pizza on the water. Lite and delish with a view and casual to boot. Great find!!

The restaurant was very impressive with 2 open wood fired pizza ovens. We were fortunate enough to get seated by the ovens and spent our time watching them prepare the food. We got the casco bay community flat bread pizza and added roasted red peppers.. and it was incredible. My wife and I devoured the entire pizza in no time flat. It was cooked to perfection, and had an amazingly crispy crust. The waiter was.. OK.. The manager came by to actually clear our plates, then back to get our check because he was indisposed at the time. One other note to management would be to keep an eye on food safety controls. All people behind the counter were doing a great job, but I did see a server get back there (without hair restraints, with bracelets on) and start helping with salads by ripping the greens with bare hands.. And didn't wash her hands or have gloves on. Then went back to running orders.

Great pizza, decently priced, everytime I go it's a long wait but usually worth it! I usually go the way of other establishments however vegan options (for friends) make it a good place to being friends and you can't go wrong with brick oven pizza!

Warm and inviting after a few days of terrible Maine weather... just what I needed! While taking a day to really just explore downtown Portland, I came across this great restaurant that serves what everyone loves... flatbreads. What's even better is that they offer all of the option on gluten-free crust! FANTASTIC! The restaurant is tucked away behind an Irish pub but the view from any seat in the restaurant is beautiful right on the dock. The flatbreads are cooked on a stone in a huge oven in the open area for all to enjoy. My server, Gillian, was so sweet and inviting. She was also very helpful in giving her favorite suggestions. I was in the mood for something very simple so I went with an extra cheesy flatbread with tomato sauce and it did not disappoint. If I have ever have a chance to return to Portland, this will definitely be on the list to visit again.

I thought the pizza was really tasty and the open wood fire oven made the dining space fun to watch. Our server was very nice too. They call it 'flatbread' but it is a thin crust pizza to you and me. Toppings were good, fresh and had an interesting combination/flavor profile. We had their apple cobbler for dessert which wasn't the best - stick to the pizza and it'll be a winner.

Perfect place for a family outing in Portland, allow extra time for the wait at lunch and dinner, and see if you can sit outside in the summer months. If you are solo, the bar is a great way to get in fast. Great vegetarian options with local craft beers on tap. Consistently great every time!

This place is always busy, so be prepared to have to wait for a table especially on the weekends! Don't shy away though because of the wait, it's totally worth it. The pizza here is delicioussss and they always have amazing specials, like just the other day they had a smoked salmon with horseradish and capers pizza. Omg. And a roasted beets with green-beans, goat cheese, and balsamic drizzle pizza. I couldn't even handle it. Their home-made pepperoni is nothing like store bought and 100x more amazing, it's also got a kick to it which I love. Basically, you have to go here.

The only reason I'm not giving this fantastic pizza place five gold ones is only because of the service. My aunt, younger cousin (super picky) and myself went for an afternoon catch-up session on their deck. About ten picnic tables with umbrellas that they often pair up, so if you're looking for a romantic or intimate meal, outside isn't for you. Unfortunately, we got the waitress that I had about a month ago. She ended up charging me for wine that I didn't order because, "that's what I had been drinking the entire night because we ran out of what you actually wanted..."..... ummmm, ever think of telling your consumer that?!?! This time she brought us out waters to start, thank God, because the temp was a steady 85. My aunt and cousin ordered a garden salad to split before their large veggie supreme pizza entree. I ordered their organic salad with chicken and goat cheese, topped with the house dressing. I really hate starting paragraphs with "unfortunately," but, again... Unfortunately, she brought MY entree salad out FIRST, then their app salad, followed by their pizza. Like, c'mon lady... it was noted that the chicken salad was my MEAL, to be accompanied with their pizza. AND another issue I had was that she waited on us with sunglasses on. I think this is a sticky situation because their deck can get very bright, but we were under an umbrella and the sun had gone behind thier building already. The food was wonderful, tasty, amazing, melt in our mouths. The pizza was massive and the picky eater managed to take down 1/2 of it. My salad was also delicious! FORTUNATELY, the service won't keep me from going back, BUT I do wish they would brush up on their "organic" service....

Flatbread Pizza is chain restaurant with most of it's locations in New England. This one in Portland definitely gets most if it's charm from ambiance and location. It is located right on the water with ferries, tugboats and sea captain ships as part of the view from the landscape window that is the back wall! Way to go on that; there is also seating on a back deck for warmer weather so you are literally right on the water. Inside is cozy with large wooden booths, regular tables, a sweet pizza oven and colorful art all around. The pizza is average. The herbs they use are nice and they use some imported Italian cheeses as well as local products. Great lemonade sweetened with Maine maple syrup. My friend had pepperoni pizza and said the roni was dry and they were skimpy with the cheese. Bummer. I would go back again because I hear the salad is excellent.

I miss this place so much. I've been in Florida for 3 years and have only managed to go back to Maine once. I was on a tight schedule then, but I just HAD to make time for Flatbread. I'm always craving a whole Casco Bay Community Flatbread with extra mushrooms!!! I love this place so much.

They make a unique and tasty pie. I usually go for the plain cheese (named "Jay's Heart" after the founder), in which they have mastered a mix of cheeses, herbs and oils to create a perfect savory flavor. They use a good sweet maple sausage which goes well on top of a cheese pizza. Their menu and specials have a number of options, many of which flavor an assortment of local produce, cheeses and meats in somewhat unconventional (and at times questionable) ways. Specials are good for the open-minded, but if you're in doubt you can't go wrong with the Jay's heart. Staff can be a bit rushed in their service and there's often a long (1 hr+) wait for a table, especially in the summer season. Best way to avoid this is to come for a late lunch or any weekday during the off-season. (Yes, the locals still manage to fill it up on their own on the weekends). The atmosphere is an interesting fusion of the working waterfront backdrop, the owner's hippy-ish roots and decour, and the hubbub of a go-to destination for tourists and locals alike. Well worth the visit.

Have been coming for years, but just now jumping on the yelp bandwagon. Great pizza with high quality ingredients, always a vegetarian and carnivore special in addition to the normal menu. Absolutely love their homemade lemonade sweetened with maple syrup and their brownie sundae with cinnamon is pretty awesome as well.

This was one of my favorite stops on our recent trip to Portland. Service was fabulous, food was fabulous, beer was fabulous. We were sat by the open kitchen area where they cook the pizzas. On a hot day, this might not be preferable, but it was cloudy and cool-ish outside, so it was fine. We started off with some of the local beer on tap, which I was a fan of. The server was knowledgable about everything they offered and suggested one to try. Most of us ordered their organic salad. Big big fan of this salad! So yummy! I typically don't like celery in things because it has such a strong flavor, but it was just right. Honestly, I can't even really recall the pizza we ordered. I know it was delicious, and I'm positive mine had lots of veggies on it. The crust was not my favorite of all crusts, but wood fired crust all tastes about the same to me, so I'm not taking off any points. :) Again, the server was very knowledgeable about everything on the menu, so that was helpful, and we were able to order a half and half pizza too. I wish this place was in Texas!

The scent of warm crisping crust and bubbling cheese wafts through Flatbread Company from the brick pizza oven in the back of the shop. It assaults your senses and is the way every pizza place should smell. Unfortunately, though, the taste of our pizza didn't delight as much as its aroma. It was a vegetarian special intended to be heavy on the herbs, but the sauce was underseasoned and the herbs weren't detectable as a topping, either. We enjoyed Flatbread Co. as a date spot, but we wouldn't rely on it when we're craving full flavor pizza.

After three days of essentially eating only lobster rolls, raw oysters, and clam chowder on vacation, we were in the mood for some beer and a light supper. We passed this place the previous day and there was a big line, plus great reviews on Yelp. Being a New Yorker, I didn't have high hopes for pizza in Maine. Ok they call it flatbread, but it's really thin crust pizza cut into funny shaped slices. They have a good assortment of local beers on tap (this seems to be a big deal in Portland), and a pretty basic menu of salads and "flatbreads." We got a small with mushrooms and their homemade, nitrate free pepperoni. This wasn't like regular pepperoni, more like a very finely cut spicy sausage. It was delicious. We say right next to the wood burning oven and got to watch all the pizza being made. The crust was thin and crispy, and all the sauce, cheese and toppings were in perfect proportion. Frankly it's hard to find pizza this good in NYC. Definitely worth a visit!

We ordered the sausage pizza and another vegetarian option. Both had minimal sauce and cheese, and almost tasteless to be honest. Waste of stomach space and money. Try something else. Staff was friendly but slow.

This place was amazing. I love all of the local organic ingredients. Everything was delicious. Our service was amazing. Had the locally made Ginger Brew. It was absolutely delicious, weird kick at the end but definitely delicious. We both loved our pizzas. My husband loved the selection of locally brewed beer. I will definitely be coming here often!

This restaurant is another Portland gem. I've probably been here at least two dozen times over the course of my life and always find myself returning. You can tell the ingredients they use here are always of the highest quality. It can be packed on weekends, but if you have to wait, it'll be worth it! There's a lot here for most anybody (my friend group consisted of someone allergic to everything and another vegan, and they had no issue getting food here). The vibe is very earthy-crunchy and the staff is always decent. I don't why but I'm becoming relaxed just thinking about it. Overall, highly recommended.

The wait was long....but the pizza was good. Next time I would order it to go at the window outside tk avoid the line. We got one with goat cheese, olives and other great toppings...it was absolutely ridiculous. The other pizza we tried had mushrooms and onions on it, the crust and sauce were perfect but the toppings needed something more. You can also get a drink at the indoor/outdoor bar while you wait for a table. We stood outside and drank a few beers while watching the boats/ferrys pull in and out of the docks.

I was thoroughly impressed with this establishment, but more with the excellent service than anything else. First of all, our waiter, whose name, I believe to be Tim, was incrediably friendly, kind and engaging, and not only did he deliver all of the pizza selections with great enthusiasm, but he also delivered a few tablets of motrin, just in time of need! One of the things I appreciate in all restaurant is to focus on one thing and do it right; and this place does that in full steam. It only serves pizza and salads from locally grown ingredients, and we happened to have visited upon the fennel green season. I really love the pulled pork with roasted red tomatoes and fennel, just wished they added more meat. The chicken pizza was also good, but not earth shattering. I really liked the goat-cheese fennel salad as well, but for $6.50, it's less exciting. Food: 4 stars Price: 3.5 stars Service: 5 stars

This unique waterfront spot has a the well worn feeling of a wholesome and earthy relative's living/dining room/kitchen. It is a great place for a date or large groups to gather for delicious wood fired pizza and salads. They rock creative daily specials that highlight seasonal and locally sourced meats and veggies as well as a beer list that rivals most bars in the area. Great place to wow out-of-towners in the summer months on that stunner of a deck. Watch boats, drink beers, eat pizza, be happy. Flatbread is pretty much an automatic great meal. I have been coming here for years and I have never had a bad experience. If Portland's pizza places were the Celtics, This place would be Robert Parish - Occasionally amazing, always dependable and probably has some weed in the car.

This is the spot. Nice views of the harbor. Friendly staff. Choiceful beer selection. Two huge brick ovens cranking out delicious flatbreads. We had a large party. After a bit of confusion we got seated on the patio. Everything was perfect from that point on.

This was our Second time at this location. Both times the food has been pretty on point. Tasty crusty pizza with good toppings. We had the the punctuated equilibrium this time, but we added chicken and it was great. Goat cheese they use is creamy and deLicious. My only complaint with this company is the staff. I get the whole lAid back vibe they are going for, but some of the servers seem like the throw a ways from whole foods market. Our bartender today first broUght us the wrong salad and then asked if we wanted some hot sauce for the pizza and immediately forgot to bring it. I'm all for spreading those good vibes but please just give me some good service first. This lOcation is WAY better than the new Providence RI one though.

A very strong hipster feel here with wood-cooked pizza and flatbread. Came here at 11:30AM on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Despite a relatively large crowd, we got our food promptly. There's a great selection of flatbreads, both with and without sauce. There's also a very good drink menu. We ordered two -- a large and a small -- to split between three people. It was a good amount of food for three very hungry people. They came with a fantastic sweet hot sauce as well.

Really i joyed the fresh made crust and fresh vegetables which were pulled high on our pizza and then baked in s wood fired over . Great flavors . Nice to see local beers on tap I would have given them a five but when my wife asked for a local Maine wine the bar keep said they did not have any and that Maine was not really a grape growing state. We both know he was wrong wife and I have been to a few Maine winery's on Maine and have enjoyed the Reds from this state . Loved the view of the harbor . Everyone was very friendly and answered all the questions we had . They even explained how local and were they got all the ingredients , even the sausage that went onto our pizza . Like the sausage a lot it was not over powering with fennel like a lot of pizza sausage I have had. Most times when it's over powering thier hiding cheap ingredients. If they ever carry local wines I'll bump my rating to a five

This place is hipster heaven. Fresh, local ingredients and cool, casual atmosphere. Lots of vegetarian/vegan offerings, too! The menu is not huge but it doesn't need to be when the food is this good! My husband and I both got salads; you can build your own and add meats, cheese and extra veggies. Lovely ginger dressing and the salads were delectable! Our daughter ordered a small pepperoni flatbread and she loved it! Service was expedient and pleasant. A great dining experience. We would definitely return and recommend this place to others.

Dinner tonight with a window table at 6:30pm. I have been here several times and if you like thin crust crispy pizza, this is a guaranteed winner. Three of the four of us started with the goat cheese salad, and all were enjoyed. Our request for an extra dressing was pretty much forgotten, and we had to get up and ask our waiter who was actively texting. Not the best service we have had here, but it wouldn't stop me from going again. I surmise Mike wasn't too jazzed about our table due to low alcohol consumption. The pizzas were great. Two large including the vegetarian special, and we had a healthy to go box to take home. A shared apple crisp (1 dessert, 4 spoons) was quickly consumed. Healthy sized serving of crisp, ice cream and whipped cream. I love dessert, and this would have been too much for one. Share the desserts! 3 stars versus 4 because of poor service

I've been a diehard fan of this place since day one. I loved them when they had the Punctuated Equilibrium, I loved them when they changed the name of the Punctuated Equilibrium, and I loved them when they changed it back... To the Punctu- you get it. Flatbread is a unique experience, and though I've had flatbread pizza at several other spots, there's really no place that does it like these guys, even their sister branch in Burlington VT. The atmosphere screams "Portland" with its crunchy hippie decor, and that attitude translates perfectly into their use of real, quality, and often locally made ingredients. If you're in on a cold winter night, get the hot lemonade. It's coziness in a glass.

Me and my husband came to Portland for a weekend away. We ended up at Flatbread company for lunch one day. We ordered a plain cheese pizza, because we figured its a classic and thats how you can really tell how good a pizza place is. This was the absolute BEST pizza I have ever had. We haven't stopped talking about it since. I wish there was a Flatbread Company closer to me, but then again I would probably gain a million pounds. Very cool atmosphere too. Highly recommend !

We really enjoyed our evening there. We were there for a rehearsal dinner and although getting the food in the beginning was a little slow (we did have 40+ people), once it started we were well fed! Our waiter knew his beer and was very personable. The pizza was surprisingly good -- we're pizza snobs (grew up in NY) and I have to say with the exception of how they cut it (I know that's ridiculous but that's how we roll), it was very good and very much like NY pizza. The brownie sundae was pretty freakin' good, too! (Never should have shared it!)

Me and my husband were planning to go to Duck Fat for lunch, but they had a 45 minute wait so we ended up finding Flatbread and giving it a try! It was great. Fun atmosphere, and really good pizza. We got the tomato, mozzerella and basil special they had and it was really good! The crust was thin, but still really soft and just plain great!

I will preface this review with the fact that we never got a chance to sit down and eat here at all. Here is what happened: We called in around 5:00 or so (had about until 9pm to get back to our little rug rat) and asked if they took reservations and they said no but we can use call in seating and they would put us on the list. We got there about 5:30 and they said it would be about 20 minutes or so and we gladly wanted to wait due to the fact that there was so many reviews on here with a positive note to them. 40 minutes went by and we checked in with the front hostess booth and they said it would be another 30 minutes or so, we waited another 50 minutes and saw some people coming in and being seated in front of us. My wife politely made the way to the desk one last time to ask what the status seeing as to how we had already been waiting for an hour and a half. They then said "Well we are not going to give you a time" My wife, visibly upset just said, if we need to get back to pick up our son by 9 do you think we will be able to get in time ... she gave my wife a pretty disgusted look and said, "well you should probably get takeout". We waited another 15 minutes and then walked out ... meandered right down the road to Pat's Pizza and got immediately seated and ate with our friends. I will probably try this place when it is less busy because of all of the good things I have heard but probably not with the wife because she has such a sour tsate in her mouth. First impressions are crucial in this industry and this one was not a good one.

Not only is this pizza made from local and organic ingredients but it tastes freaking awesome. The line here was always long to get in and people were walking around with boxes of it in the streets but it is that good. Plus, there's a sweet take out window for drinks if people want to grab some railing and sip on a beverage while they take in the harbor, maybe wait for a ferry, and hang out.

This place is excellent! Out of my six days in the northeast, it was my favorite restaurant. We asked to put our names on the list around 5pm, considering there'd be a wait later, but they only take names once there is a wait. I called around 5:45pm, and put our name on the list. I was told maybe a 30 minute wait. We arrived and waited just maybe 25 minutes. There is a little counter outside in the waiting area, where I ordered some drinks from the bar. The bartender was confused about iced tea though. Once seated, our server was very attentive and answered questions. The small pizza was enough for two to three people - at least the servings of pizza we eat. There are numerous options and add ons. They also allow a half and half pizza, in case you want to try different toppings. The large pizzas appeared huge, from what we could see. The pizza itself was delicious and you can watch the employees make the pizzas in the fire ovens. Salads are typically lame at restaurants with some ice berg, bland old vegs, and some soggy dressing- not here! The salads had a fresh spring mix with interesting lettuce variety, some sea kelp (not tons), and a delicious dressing. The wait for the pizzas was a bit longer than we expected, but we were still enjoying our salads, so that is ok.

Ummmmm yes please! Love, love love this place! You can't beat the location and the views of the harbor, service is prompt, friendly and knowledgeable and the pizza is darn good. There are a ton of combinations, the toppings are fresh and the crust is oh-so-good. Plus they have a pretty extensive beer & wine selection as well salads, sandwiches and entrees. Best part is that they are dog friendly and even bring your pup some water and a treat - talk about service! We will definitely be back and I foresee this being a summer time favorite for patio dining and basking in the sun with cocktails.

The pizza is fine but I have yet to experience what so many seem to rave about. How many different IPA's must one taste before accepting that they're just not that good?

I use to live in Burlington and this location stands true to the original. Great flatbreads... Yes flatbreads, don't expect pizza. Fantastic atmosphere, outdoor seating, friendly people and great tastes! Also has good salads! A place I enjoy coming back to!

My favorite pizza place literally in the world. They have a homemade clay oven inside so the crust texture and smoky grilled flavor is so good. They are very local farm to table so there will always be a fresh seasonal option. Meats are nitrate free. Okay let's talk about this salad. I dislike ordering salads when out to eat because I eat salads all day long and have mastered what I like but this one is so simple yet hard to recreate- the dressing is fresh and light. Great for big parties or a first date. Looks Over the water and the ambiance of casual or nice can go either way.

First time eating here and it was amazing. The ambiance was colorful and inviting. Had a strong hipster feel, especially among the staff, not overwhelming. We had seats right next to the oven which was neat. They take a lot of pride in their ingredients. The pizza was delicious. Also probably the best brownie sundae I have ever had. Definitely recommend this place.

Really nice restaurant that I enjoyed with my girlfriend. Tasty pizza, and unusually good salad that was better than its description. Hint: if you are only lightly or moderately hungry, two people don't need a large pizza. It was around twice as much as we needed.

Went to flatbread with a group for a birthday party. At first, the service was great and the pizza was great too. Then it came time to check out. We had 8 people and told the waiter at the beginning we wanted separate checks. 6 people split two pizzas, two people split another pizza. Everyone had a few beers. We asked for the check at 8:30. The place was nearly empty, not like the waiter was busy- he refused to split the check and said we could figure it out. One of the girls at the table got paper and pen, wrote out what everyone ordered and should pay by name, item and total amount. IT TOOK HIM AN HOUR AND A HALF TO BRING OUR CARDS BACK. We were done our food and drinks, just sat there until 10:00. Seriously? We did the math for you! I still got overcharged by 8$! I get a big group is complicated, but really? Awful service!

After telling a few friends that live in Portland that I was finally visiting, two of them told me that I have to try this place, and I'm really happy I did. Great location, love the vibe. Everybody that worked there were super nice. Our waiter was a cool, chill guy. I loved and greatly enjoyed my Riesling. My guy got a Snuttonose (spelling?) and enjoyed it very much. We got half the veggie special pizza. My only compliant is that I felt the portobello mushrooms were a little over marinated in balsamic vinegar. He got the Jay's Heart which was super yummy. I say this place is a must go!

5 stars for food, 5 stars for atmosphere, and 5 stars for service! Despite the freezing cold on a dark September night, the food, drink, and company almost made me forget entirely about how much I was shivering! We ordered 3 large pizzas for a group of 6. I think the menu states that a large feeds 2, it can definitely feed more than 2 (unless you only have starving carnivores for friends). Among the three we tried, the pineapple and ham(?) special was BY FAR the tastiest. I'm actually slightly upset that it's a special, what would I do if I couldn't order this next time?? Flatbread uses a lot of local ingredients, and they also serve a variety of local (Northeastern) beers. I couldn't make up my mind, so I got a half-pint of two! The large oven in the middle of the restaurant looks great, and as an example of the amazing service, our waiter gave us a quick mini-tour of the place on the way to the restroom (we were heading there, not him). IN SUMMARY: great tasting fresh pizza and amazing staff!

This was our second trip to flatbread. It is very good both times. The salads are delicious. They aren't fancy, but fresh and wonderful. Strongly recommend adding the goat cheese to the organic salad. For 4 people, we split two large pizzas (on top of two salads) and had nearly a large in amount leftover. The coevolution is great. We also tried a special with squash...also very good. Two very different pies. Good service and outside seating. Beautiful on the inside, as well. Definitely recommend it.

Yup, 5 stars- awesome service, great atmosphere and incredible flatbread pizza. Draft beer choices are plentiful. The place is super busy so plan to wait a bit and enjoy a cocktail on the deck.

This place was recommended very highly to me, and it came close to expectations. The food itself was pretty good -- I ordered the daily special, which had a sweet potato base, and it was excellent. The portions are pretty big, though I managed to finish mine. The atmosphere is pretty nice. We sat outside near the water, which provided great views. The service was excellent; initially, we thought we'd have to wait for 20-30 minutes to get a table, but a waiter brought us over within 10 minutes or so. Overall, it was very good, though not quite as good as the very high expectations we had.

I LOVE this place. There's always a great atmosphere, sometimes there's live music, the staff is always friendly and helpful, and the pizza (and salads, and drinks, and desserts) are all AMAZING. Highly recommended!!!

I'm from NEPA and I we have a plethora of amazing pies back home. So, when I came to visit my aunt and uncle PA expats in Portland, they knew they had to take me here for a decent slice. I loved the ambiance of the wood-fires and kids' drawings hanging around the place and decorating the menus. My aunt and uncle also said that having a beer outside the place was one of the best things to do in the summer. The server was pleasant and attentive and highlighted the locavore, organic, nitrate-free items on the menu. I enjoyed their specialty pies, and their house-made pepperoni was pretty good, but if I were to go again I would get a double serving of Jay's Heart; The ratio of cheese and sauce and the herbed oil topper makes for a pretty perfect pie. I wouldn't miss the others. Oh, wait... I do agree with another poster that said to stay away from the lemonade. I'm a huge fan of fresh-squeezed lemonade and my mouth was not digging the maple syrup sweetener. Maybe a drop or two of agave nectar? The syrup was too sweet and the stronge flavor of maple drowned the fresh lemon flavor.

The best pizza is here!! The quality of the food at the restaurant is perfect! The prices are great! I give this place 5 stars! If you haven't checked out Flatbread, don't wait any longer!!

Delicious- the hot sauce is a sweet tangy warm combination from heaven. All my fiancé talks about is trying to create it, but doubts he will be able to :) we had the special of the day- chicken and mozzarella and tons of spices with a beautiful buttermilk drizzle! Got a large for both of us and we almost finished it all. If you're not super hungry go for the small- we were full for the rest of the day!

I came here for restaurant week. This place wasn't up to my expectation. We started with half a dozen oyster with their delicious homemade vinaigrette and raspberry sauce. Their flatbreads disappointed me. It was very dry and burned out. I got the banana bread sundae for dessert and it was very good as well. The reason why I gave it a 3 stars is their main dish didn't impress me plus the service is kinda slow.

Hahhaha! This place is hilarious. Classic example of success because of location and market. Well done. Stupid people, stupid food, stupid drinks, stupid atmosphere, stupid service. Have you ever been to a restaurant before? Have you ever heard of pizza? This place is one step away from being a Saturday Night Live skit. Pile some stuff on bread, throw it in a brick oven, charge a lot- success! Yikes. This is where tourists go to get "above average" pizza the whole family will enjoy. What a mess. PS - At least I think they are trying for nitrate-free ingredients, maybe local produce, etc.

I love the Flatbread Company! I have been to several of their restaurants but we always come to this one when we are in town. I love the salad with blue cheese crumbles! My favorite flatbread is the Homemade Sausage. We switch it up from time to time and it's always good! Yum Yum Yum!

We went here yesterday for lunch since it would please the variety of dietary preferences in my group (vegans v. omnivores). We've been to other Flatbread's before (North Conway, etc.) so we knew what to expect. Outside seating (beautiful day) had a 20 minute wait so we ate inside. We all got soft drinks (Maine rootbeer, etc.) and some of us started with salads. Their salads are always so good - I wish I could get an entire salad of just seaweed there! The dressing is also delicious. My boyfriend and his son got a large cheese pizza (and ate all of it), my two friends got a large vegan pizza (and ate all of it), and I got a small vegan pizza no olives (and ate 2/3rds of it and took the rest to go). The waitress was friendly and the salads came out immediately after we ordered! Fastest served appetizer ever! I wonder if it was already pre-plated? The place looks like most Flatbreads with the pizza oven in the middle of the room, hippy charity sayings around the room and a list of locally sourced food. My only complaint is that it seems that the menu at the Flatbread's I have been to hasn't changed in years. It's the same food I ordered 5 years ago. I like change, I need change, and I like evolving. The vegan pizza is boring now. It was awesome 5 years ago when Flatbread's was ahead of it's time but now it's old and plain. Add some Daiya on the menu as an option (good vegan cheese that melts) or if you wanna source locally add some tofu feta or nut cheese. Just something else. I didn't get my pizza with olives because I hate olives so I regret not asking for a substitute like spinach. I used to be ok with vegan no-cheese pizza but now with so many companies carrying vegan pizza with nondairy cheese and good sauces I want more. Or load on more veggies to make it more filling.

This is the best pizza restaurant I have visited. It is incredibly well run, has hand made oak fired clay pizza ovens, a great bar, a great view and great pizzas for all people. The service is impeccable. The pizza is fantastic. Our first day ever in Maine and we struck gold.

Unique, delicious pizza with healthy and responsible ingredients. Outdoor, waterside seating. A giant stone oven built into the atmosphere of the dining room, fed pizza for wood-firing by hipsterish, bearded men. Live music. Friendly, knowledgable servers that will talk to you about the source of the ingredients a la Portlandia. What's not to love? Indeed. Nothing! Try the seaweed salad. Terrific! Try any of their pizzas. Awesome! Have kids? No problem! Just keep them away from the fire and you'll all have a great time.

The pizza was amazing! They're heavy on using fresh, Maine grown ingredients which make the pizza even better. I'm not a thin crust pizza guy but I am there! Dessert was the brownie sundae, not horrible but if you're looking for desserts go to a dessert store. Definitely on the "Returns" list for us! I'd give 5 stars were it not for the dessert and small beer selection.

Five stars for location and decor. The quirky fun atmosphere and the open wood oven made it a great experience. The service was very good also, but I have to say we did not love the flat breads, so I have to judge by the food first.

  • clark j.

This place clearly uses quality ingredients. Underwhelmed by the crispness of the pizza - considering the thin crust, shouldn't it be crunchy? Especially seeing as the pizzas are cooked in a brick oven, which (presumably) would have a very high heat? Oh well. Delicious pizza and salads (though pretty expensive for a pile of greens), along with a decent pound cake special desert.

    (4)
  • Chip A.

Delicious! first time here and very happy. The menu lacks in variety, however, with an average of only about four basic flatbreads (no sauce pizzas, basically) and four tomato sauce pizzas. Ordered the flatbread with cheese mushrooms, and fennel sausage. A large is more than big enough for two people with leftovers to spare and is about twenty bucks. not bad for two people! would totally eat there again.

sat alongside sailboats, patio on the water, gulls squawking overhead - but no seafood on menu. did enjoy the rather simple lunch of organic good-for-you food (sweetly served by patagonia-clad skinny hippies) esp. since dinner turned out to be hella of a fry-up. spring for vanilla ice cream topped blueberry crisp cuz it's soooo wicked good.

Decent pizza with an organic and local feel. Not many options for toppings. The salads were very good, as well - again very few ingredients, even cucumbers and tomatoes were unavailable. Fun atmosphere with some young dude throwing around pizzas into a large flaming oven. As is typical for the area, a good selection of beer.

Flatbread is more than a craze, it has officially taken over New England. All of my favorite New England destinations have been hit by the Flatbread epidemic: Portland, Portsmouth, and Burlington (American Flatbread). What's next, Newport? Perfect location on the water, yes! Excellent pizza, that's debatable, but I have a feeling your kids will love it.

I love the pizza here, one of the best if not the best pizza I've ever had! It is a bit expensive but the pizza makes up for the price! I usually get the Pepperoni pizza and they have a very good drink selection as well.

Yeah, I'll go there. I'll give it a fiver. Because I really do feel like it satisfies me on many many levels. The salad? Amazing with its addition of goat cheese and seaweed. The pizza? Delicious. Perfectly cooked in that giant brick oven. All natural ingredients and intriguing tastes. I love the sausage pizza. The ambience? Hippie/Hipster-esque, with lots of seating for families as well as couples. Deeeeee-wishious.

the pizza here is really good! we had the onion and mushroom pie. Once I sat down and looked at the website, I realized I had eaten at the one in Somerville, MA a couple of years ago. I thought it was really good then! Its a regional chain. The service was fine. I had to take one star away since they had no oregano. How does a pizza place run out of oregano? We went Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and it wasn't crowded.

  • Michael G.

Wow! This was the best pizza I've ever had. And the price was great too. Did I mention, we also got to eat on an outdoor deck overlooking the ocean? Yes, I did feel guilty for passing up all of those great seafood places on Commercial Street in Portland, but boy was it worth it. Almost like the feeling I had when I switched from BlackBerry to the iPhone. :-) Although we're from Boston, we'll be back to this place.

Can I just say this place is fabulous? Their food is 100% amazing and the service is always wonderful. I will say it is a bit touristy and always very busy. I love going at off times, like mid afternoon when the rush is to a minimum. I love coming here and sitting out back facing the harbor. I will always be a fan of Flatbread.

    (5)
  • Eric S.

Felt touristy, but the food was fantastic. While I loved the pizza, and the service was good - I am knocking off a whole star for the lemonade that they brag about using maple syrup to flavor. NO!!! Lemonade is wonderful stuff, even if not sweetened - but good lord this maple syrup version is repulsive and an abomination - do not order it and they really need to not do that.

Fun, casual, comfortable atmosphere. Great service. Food was delicious - fresh, wholesome, & very tasty. And the best part: gluten-free friendly! I have not had an actual hand-made pizza crust in a restaurant before...it was divine. They also had gluten free whoopie pies on hand, though I was underwhelmed by this particular dessert - if you go for it, upgrade to the hot fudge sundae version. Dogs were welcome at the outdoor seating area. We'll definitely be back!

Best pizza I've ever had. Love the atmosphere AND the location. Great for family outings, a romantic date, a casual lunch or dinner... Order anything off the menu and you won't be disappointed. Price: For Pizza, Small $7-$10; Large: $17-19. Refer to menu for other pricing Beer: $4 Food: Ordered 3 small pizzas for 3 people. Coevolution, Casco Bay Community Pizza, & Special (Swordfish, pineapple salsa, garlic, wasabi creme fresh). Best pizza would be the Special swordfish, pineapple salsa, garlic, with wasabi creme fresh hands down! Hmmm!!! It was sweet with just the right kick at the end. Next would be Casco Bay Community Pizza, mushrooms & carmalized onions. Last would be the Coevolution, this pizza is sauce-less, but very good! Atmosphere: Kid-friendly! They have paper & crayon for you to draw on & then you can post it on the walls like you did when you were little! Great view of the bay, right on the pier.

Gluten free, kids, local food they have it all. I would go again and again. I have rarely had such wonderful gluten free flatbread and the setting is great. It does appear to fill up very fast here though. We typically stop in Portland when in Maine and this is one of my favorite spots.

It's difficult for me to write this review, as I used to loved Flatbread Company. And it's with a heavy-heart that I admit that I don't so much anymore. The flatbread is OUTSTANDING (it really is the "Wood Fired Love" they claim it is. Seriously, the "Co-Evolution" is, hands-down, one of the most delicious things in town): the quality of their food absolutely hasn't suffered. When they get it right that is. It seems I often have to send my flatbread back because they messed up the order. It's the service that I'm turned-off by: it's as if the waitstaff has become supremely apathetic. For example, the last time we went we asked tobe seated outdoors (that's another thing that rocks about this place: the atmosphere and the scenic view. I mean, really, you're basically sitting on the ocean!). They told us it wouldn't be a problem. Our waitress only told us after we were already at our table that it would be "shared seating." Our very small picnic table already had four heavy-set people sitting there, who glanced up at us disdainfully and then refused to move to give us any room. We sat awkwardly perched at the very edge of the benches, unable to move or speak freely. We asked to be moved, and after we were relocated inside (the waitress didn't hide the fact that she was annoyed with us requesting this), we waited twenty minutes before any waiter would acknowledge us. When she finally did, we already knew what we wanted and despite telling the waiter we ready to order right then, she still felt it necessary to interrupt us and read off the specials. She ignored us for the rest of the evening (someone else brought us our flatbread). Oh, Flatbread . . . you're slipping. And there are far better "pizzas" in the area now. Is your hit-or-mess delicious food and scenic views-when-you-can-actually-see-them enough to keep me around? I just don't know.

I went here after a long time. maybe few years. I remember it being the best pizza in Maine. I was very excited to go back and specially take my family with me. However it was a bit of a disappointment. the pizza was soggy! It is still much better than your regular pizza but it is not the Best pizza anymore. :(

Loved this place the first time I went. It's really a great thing to support a local business that's using locally-grown ingredients. When I went back a second time, the kitchen staff butchered my friend's order. The good news is the waiter noticed and immediately asked for them to re-make the pizza.

    (3)
  • Daniel D.

The food quality and service alone boosts this up to 4 stars. The one star off comes from the long wait times and atmosphere. The food is spectacular, being made with quality, fresh ingredients and cooked to perfection in brick ovens. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about the food and alcoholic beverage choices, and all are eager to share this knowledge. Now comes the not-so-terrific part. The wait times are atrocious, getting up to 1.5 hours on a bad night. Nobody ever, I repeat, EVER gets a table right away. Arrive early. Next, the atmosphere. I get it, natural ingredients and old-fashioned, sustainable cooking practices. That doesn't mean the whole place has to look like a jumbled bucket for every possible granola-head theme and concept out there getting shoved in your face, which you'll learn to tolerate when you eat here. Example: kid's drawings plastered everywhere, walls, menus, etc., all cute initially, but gets old fast. Five Guys nailed it with a simple bulletin board where people can put index card-size crayon drawings, but flatbreads misses the entire concept of there being a time and place for everything. Coupled with the dim lighting and poor layout, this place has a long way to go to keep people coming back for more than the food.

Ate the veggie special and the jays heart with sausage. Veggie was amazing! Lots of toppings and flavors. The sausage was quite sweet; unique and tasty. Both had a great chewy crust. Atmosphere is perfect; watch them make the pizza from your seat in their brick ovens or eat outside. I highly recommend it!

Outstanding pizzas and salads made with local ingredients. It's right next to Casco Bay Lines making it a convenient albeit busy restaurant. The place is always jammin in the summer but well worth the wait. What really made this a 5 star review is the level of service. I was trying to make the 5:45 boat to Long and the manager really hustled and expedited my order to make sure I made my boat and she did it all with a smile on her face. The food and service here rocks!

Three people told me when visiting Portland to stop at Flatbread Pizza. They gave me three reasons: 1. Great view of the Old Port harbor while sitting on the back deck, 2. very good salads and 3. possibly the best thin crust pizza they ever ate. So we went there for lunch and everything we were told is true. The view from the deck is great, the salads very good and it was the best thin crust pizza that we have had. This is definitely a restaurant that you want stop at for lunch or light dinner while in Portland.

Gosh you are good. Every time I go I say, "Today, I'm going to get something different," and every time I go I get a beer, their salad and whatever the Vegetarian Pizza Special is (which actually HAS been different each time so I am technically following my inner monologue ambition). First off, the huge oven and the menus decorated by little Chitlins creates a really welcoming atmosphere. Second, it's a non-pretentious joint on the water - during the summer you can wait outside and get drinks from the bar window (SO CLUTCH!). Third, they have a great selection of beer and wine - most of it local which makes me smile. Fourth, the food makes me believe in humanity again. Good Lord is it good. Sure it's 'just' pizza and salad but man, the eats just feel clean without all the preservative gunk you can get everywhere else. So tasty. You shan't be disappointed. The only downside to this establishment is that BECAUSE it is so food coma inducing it gets really, really ridiculously busy during peak eating times. They don't take rezzies but you can call in and put your name on the list before you arrive so that helps. Highly recommend either way.

After much debate where to get lunch of the many great restaurants in Portland, friends suggested Flatbread. They have been to other locations in Burlington, Vermont and also located in Edgartown, MA the restaurant is known for a mindful, organic food philosophy. The restaurant is right by the water and boats. We had a pitcher of sangria, which was light and refreshing. We went through it quickly amongst 4 people. Mesclun and organic sweet leaf lettuces tossed with celery and carrots, toasted sesame seeds, arame seaweed and berry vinaigrette with Vermont goat cheese $7.50 Homemade nitrate-free maple-fennel sausage, sulfate-free sun dried tomatoes, caramelized onions, mushrooms, whole milk mozzarella and Parmesan cheese baked on bread dough with garlic oil and herbs Large $18.75 I was slightly disappointed that the sausage pizza did not have red sauce, but it was very healthy tasting and the sausage has less sodium. My friend ordered her own pepperoni pizza, however after all our food arrived, still no pepperoni pizza. We all started eating with our friend's insistence, but poor thing didn't have her meal. We weren't sure what happened, since we all heard her order, but the waitress rectified the situation professionally, getting the pizza out as quick as possible and did not charge her for her meal. Homemade nitrate-free pepperoni, tomato sauce, whole milk mozzarella and imported Parmesan cheese baked on bread dough with garlic oil and herbs. I thought the pepperoni and red sauces was amazing. I would order this myself next time.

This place greatly exceeded our expectations when dining there last week. Salads were fresh and tasty. Wood fired pizza was excellent and not overdone with toppings. Very convenient location if staying downtown and looking for a change of pace from the almost overwhelming number of seafood options.

I am honestly obsessed with this restaurant. My friend and I go every time I visit her and I am sure that she eats there even more often. The place actually reminds me of something straight out of Austin, TX. It's a very local and community centric restaurant with delicious flatbread and salads. I love their organic salad and the Coevolution Flatbread is my favorite, closely followed by Jay's Heart.

Fun place on the harbor, good flatbread-type pizza with interesting toppings, some a bigger hit than others (chicken pizza was everyone's favorite). Atmosphere is exactly as others describe, laid-back, hippie-ish friendly vibe which is cool and/or mildly annoying depending on your perspective. It's the kind of place where servers gaze in your eyes just a bit too long, smiling as they take your order and telling you how amazing things are. Also summed up by the menu phrase 'No Boundaries Salad' (meaning choose your own ingredients, which wasn't the first image that came to mind). Having said that, the salad with sesame seeds & local seaweed was amazing. So was the fresh lemonade with honey, and the brownie sundae. And it was fun. I'll be back.

Great pizza or flatbread or whatever you call it! Unique salads. Fresh maple lemonade! Sat outside on a sunny afternoon and enjoyed the view along with a vegetarian uh flatbread thing, lemonade and wine. Great location on the pier and our waitress was really friendly and attentive. Cozy inside with a sitting area and a long bar.

Definitely very Portland as far as atmosphere goes (laid back but definitely a hipster vibe)...it's up to you if that a good thing or not. As far as food, I think I came here with the wrong expectations. I was looking for simple pizza done well. Think: brick oven, thin crust with homemade sauce using fresh cheese and meat toppings. Flatbread is pretty good, but it's not that (well, kind of it is but it's not simple). Like the other reviews have pointed out, Flatbread is more in the "artisan" tradition meaning that it's not just about awesome pie's or calzone's but organic, locally-sourced goat cheese and free-range chicken toppings. Don't get me wrong, it's definitely tasty and a nice option for a more formal but still casual (does that make sense?) dinner but I wouldn't go there expecting Italian food/pizza in the traditional sense. Prices are typical for the area and you pay as much for atmosphere (and great location) as you do for the food...wait time can be excessive sometimes.

Pizza. Such an important part of my life. It's good even when it's so so, so when it's amazing, its cerebral! Thanks Flatbread, for bringing me to another dimension. Your salad with goat cheese and brownie sundae knock my socks off, as well. Will you marry me?

I went to Flatbread Company for an early, casual dinner with a couple colleagues on a Thursday night. The restaurant is situated in the Old Port right on the water looking out to Casco Bay. Despite arriving on the early side, the restaurant was quite busy, with what seemed like a very diverse crowd...with the younger hipster type in the bar area and many families with kids dinning. It's a fun, lively place -- a full band even started playing towards the end of our dinner. We shared a couple very fresh organic salads as well as a couple "flatbreads" (aka pizzas from those of us from Chicago ;)) from the wood-fired, clay oven -- all were delicious especially the pie with the maple-fennel sausage, sundried tomatoes, and caramelized onions. Good pizza + good service + fun atmosphere = a spot I would recommend

Really great flatbread. Great service! Fun atmosphere on the harbor. Cool to see the food being made and cooked in the handmade clay ovens. We had the salad and shared a homemade sausage flatbread. Delicious! We also shared the brownie sundae. It was SO good. A warm brownie topped With ice cream and cinnamon. Can't miss this place!

Several of the restaurants we wanted to try on a visit to portland were closed last Monday, but I'm glad we ended up at flatbread. The menu had ample options to please almost any dietary need and the staff were very friendly. The portions are large, so be sure to come hungry!

  • Maddie K.

The menu is very simple but really good. They substituted things that I wanted on my salad and didn't charge me extra which was a plus. All of the flatbreads are delicious and I would recommend everything. Be prepared to wait on the weekends but it is for sure worth it. Also it can get pretty loud so if you have hearing problems make sure to sit close to your company! But the wait staff was outstanding.

Just goes to show that the quality of the ingredients makes the food, not fancy prep techniques or exotic trends. My wife and I got the organic salad (incredible! best salad either of us has ever had!) and the veggie special flatbread (eggplant, onions, peppers, tomatoes, garlic). I washed it all down with a Peak Organic spring ale draft. How do you beat salad, pizza, and beer? With top-quality ingredients.

The atmosphere is like someone else said, hippie-ish. It's very kid-friendly, with all the childrens' artwork up on display -- I feel like I'm at day camp stopping over for good soft-breaded-thin-crusted-wood-fire-oven-baked-pizza-with-excellent-cheese-Oh-and-they-also-have-tasty-fresh-lemonade-which-is-sweetened-using-maple-syrup. Good meal.

Organic, natural ingredients and hand-made stone-baked pizza. This is as good as it gets! If you're looking for a casual atmosphere with really fantastic food, try Flatbread. It's always busy, but well worth the short wait! If you don't finish, you'll want a box. I recommend: Jay's Heart.

I stopped by this waterfront restaurant with two friends on a weekend trip to Portland after thouroughly enjoying (maybe too much) the nightlife in the Old Port. We were seated right away by a friendly server and sat inside with a view of the roaring brick oven (impressive). My friend and I split the Coevolution, an impressive flatbread touting all organic ingredients like fresh red onions, Kalamata olives, feta and goat cheese. A black board sporting the local suppiers of the ingredients and the suprisingly extensive wine and beer list of almost all Maine brewed offerings. Only very small downside was our seating near the brick oven and slightly weak AC. I will absolutely return and will try sitting outside on the ocean front terrace.

I have a total love affair with pizza & the fact that they use organic & local food as much as possible, makes me love the Flatbread's chain. Hubby & I stopped in here on a rainy Saturday for dinner. We were told the wait was 30 mins, but it was much closer to 10. We were seated in a cozy corner booth & our server immediately took our drink order & told us the specials. The carne pizza of the night was steak with asparagus & blue cheese... so of course we needed to check it out. That pizza was so good that hubby ended up ordering a sausage & pepperoni personal sized to go when we were done =) The selection of beverages also has local offerings as well... I got the Maine Root root beer & hubby had the Peeper Ale from Maine Beer Co (reasonably priced for the large sized bottle, too). Would definitely stop in here again if I were in the area.

Sorry to disagree but I guess we don't get it. As locals, we've been to Flatbread maybe 8-10 times with friends and others who love it. The last time we went our table was so dark that we all laughed about no being able to read the menu. The wait was long and it was so loud we had a tough time talking. Tables near the front or on the deck are a must for visitors. Our out of town friends loved watching a cruise ship head back out to sea. We find the pizza just okay. Maybe we are too found of dough. Thin and crispy is the Flatbread way. The organic theme certainly makes everything trendy.

Finding good food is what my life is all about. Hanging out with my great friends Lynne, Michael, Pate, and Emily makes great food a top priority. While pizza does not make that list very often I have to say walking into Flatbread and seeing the huge stone fire burning stoves peaked my interest. I am at the table enjoying Gary's local brew my friends are enjoying fresh beet salads. The crust here are made from natural ingredients. We order the special of the day a organic chicken with sun dried tomato pesto pizza and the nitrite free pepperoni and mushroom. We ate every last bite. In a town where I never thought I would step away from lobster long enough to even think of pizza I am here and loving every bit of it. The view is not bad either. Ask for Alex she is great, friendly and knows the food and beers well enough to help guide you to the perfect lunch on the docks of Portland, ME.

I'm from Chicago, and we are quite particular about our 'za. So I was a bit nervous when my sister suggested this place - organic, locally grown, healthy ingredients? In a pizza? And it's still good? Not possible. I became even more squeamish upon hearing the day's special - some odd combination of beef and bok choy that I would never, ever, put within 50 miles of a pizza. And organic pepperoni? I was pleasantly surprised when everything was absolutely delicious - the steak pizza being my favorite. The goat cheese salad was also delish. The staff was friendly and the location can't be beat - in the harbor looking out at the ocean - beautiful. There is also a huge open outdoor bar area where you can have drinks while you wait. Although pizza from Chi-town is still my fave, I've come to the conclusion that organic, "healthy" pizza is not so bad after all!

I had a group of Midwestern people in for business. I had no idea of what to expect. Pizza spots can be so all over the board when it comes to food quality and ambiance. This location was a jackpot, however! We loved the relaxed atmosphere - and beautiful view of the harbor! We were placed to sit in a couch-like area. Very relaxed and home-like feel. We all were intrigued by the brick oven. We do not see this style in many places around Chicago. Due to time constraints, we wanted to order just drinks and a variety of flat breads. We tried the blueberry soda! So good! The ginger soda was a bit spicy for some, but most really enjoyed. Moxy and root beer were also great. As for the flat bread, the wood-fired oven made a very nice pie! We tried the homemade sausage, Jimmy's Free Range chicken, a vegetarian pizza, and Jay's Heart. Each was unique! It was so good to sample all of the breads. We came away so impressed with the food and atmosphere - we will be back for next meeting! A can't miss while in Portland! A nice bottle of wine (or two) would be perfect with a flat bread and friends...GREAT PLACE! All of the staff was as good as the food!

Disappointing. Maybe because this place has high rating, or maybe because I'm from New York and got spoil by NY's pizzerias, the pizzas here were disappointing. Fire wood oven or not, the pizza should come out clean. They really need to clean their oven more frequently. When we got our pizzas, the bottom was full of black ashes that we have to scratch off ourselves, which was not easy. And rather going into conversations, we were all busy trying to scratch off as much ashes as possible so our mouth can have another bite. We sat outdoor, nice view, but the pizzas got cold quickly. Also, nice waiters, but when we ask about the size of the pizza, if the four of us could share one pie because we're small eaters, he said that won't be enough. So, we end up ordering two pies. When the pizzas were ready, we all looked at each other because these are full size, 8 slices pizzas! I'm not sure how much the local eat on average, but I can't eat 4 slices in one meal. At least the left overs didn't taste bad the following day.

The first time we came here we were super hungry, and the hour + wait sent us off in search of a place with immediate seating. Armed with patience, we tried again this weekend. The 45 minute wait was tolerable once we settled on the enclosed walkway overlooking the water with a couple beers. Once we were called, it was pretty clear that we scored - instead of a table, we given the couches in the corner that surrounded a small table. It was super cozy and comfortable. Along with the welcoming and warm atmosphere, and the AMAZING smell of the place, I was in heaven. Our server informed us that flatbreads were taking 20-25 minutes to arrive. I think normally after waiting for 45 minutes, this would have annoyed me, but we were super comfy, had a great view, and good company, so all was well. We ordered a salad to split between the three of us while we waited. The salad was delicious. The veggies were fresh and the dressing was tasty. We added blue cheese, and it was soft and creamy. The pizza was actually a little bit of a disappointment. With an impressive monolith of a pizza oven, and the delicious scent of garlic and basil circulating the room, I guess I expected a little more. Maybe a thinner crust, or a little more generosity with the sauce and cheese? Don't get me wrong - I loved the idea of organic ingredients. I loved the fact that the pepperoni on my best friend's pizza was nitrate free. I just...didn't love the pizza? Granted, this was also on flatbread, instead of traditional crust, so maybe it was me. I guess I was just hoping that the flatbread would be a little crispier. The only caveat I have to this mostly positive review is that we really lucked out with couch seating (by the windows, tons of light, room to spread out and get comfortable), and I can't say I know what it would be like in one of the wooden booths (hard, looked a little cramped) or the tables. Still, I think that if we were to go on an off night or off hour (less wait), I'd definitely give it another shot. And I'll probably ask to wait for a couch.

As unsophisticated as this may make my palate sound, possibly the best meal I've ever eaten was pizza and beer. But it was not just any pizza and beer. The glass of allagash white and the custom caramelized onion, mushroom, and organic goat cheese pizza I had one Sunday in November at the Flatbread Company has literally ruined me for any future casual beer and pizza night at home. I don't know how they did it. I've had those same ingredients before in combination, but the effect was not the same as this. The building itself was charming too. The interior is warm and rustic maritime with these great wooden booths that look like they could seat eight people with ease. The service was really laid back and friendly, without pretense. This place along with a few other restaurants in the area has really cemented Portland as one of my absolute favorite food towns of all time. Leaving there and walking up the street with a pleasant buzz on from the allagash, all we could do for awhile was mumble over and over again about how good the meal was. And then later the next day, on the drive back to Philly, our regular conversation would occasionally be punctuated with, "I can't believe how good that lunch at the flatbread company was."

By far, one of the best pizza joints in Portland Maine. Service is usually pretty good, although the place gets packed, so expect a wait, sometimes more than thirty minutes. Salad with goat cheese is nice and light but their proprietary salad dressing is really good. I knew one of the servers there and she 'borrowed' the recipe for me. All I can say is, there's raspberry infused vinegar and OJ in there. If you call a few hours ahead of time and specify a particular time, you can get on a list that will speed up your seating as long as you are there at the time you specified. Its not a reservation Per se, but it will get you seated quicker than just walk in off the street. I only gave it 4 out of 5 stars because on about 33% of my visits there, the pizza toppings were too sparse to justify the price and wait. The floor manager will correct it but you have to speak up. Don't worry though, with the deafening noise in the dining area, no one will ever hear you complaining...

Pizza is great- especially when everything about it is organic and you know you won't be killing your stomach afterwards. That's how I feel about the pizza from flatbread. Being from San Diego, we definitely have our fair share of organic pizzas and I think that portland's Flatbread Co. Is great! I ordered a small coevolution pizza topped with feta, motzerella cheese, Greek olives, tomatos and I believe there was also green peppers. Anyways- it was delicious. The only downside was that they were out of large pizza dough, so we could only get smalls, it was also a bit of a wait, but that was mentioned to us as we sat down. Definitely the busiest resturant in Portland, and it should be! I thought it was awesome that the waiters and waitresses didn't have any uniform and wore whatever they wanted. The place had a great autmosphere and I'd reccomend it to any organic lover.

I may be a little biased because I had a terrible first date here once, but flatbread is kind of weird. Or maybe it was the guy. Hard to remember. The pizza is OK, the beer selection is good (Allagash White, fans, you will be pleased!!) but what I found strange was the decor. It looks like Jerry Garcia and Trey Anastasio got really high and decided to have a paint party. It's got that hippie thing going on. It doesn't seem to really mesh with the rest of the Old Port restaurants, which are mostly Irish-style bars and seafood stops. But if you want to sit out by the piers (water view) and have a drink and nice conversation, this is a good place to go.

I can't help but love Flatbread. The pizza is always great, the goat cheese salad rules and there is plenty of cold beer on draft.

Delicious wood-fired flatbread pizza served in a warm, comfy atmosphere. I revisited this old favorite just a week or so ago while I was in town and had the most *delicious* birthday dinner. The regular pizzas on the menu are very tasty but the special we ordered that night was amazing - mashed sweet potato with goat cheese, parmesan, mozzarella, portabello mushrooms and drizzled with a balsamic reduction. Oh my. Be still my heart! In the summer, it's a pleasure to sit outside on the waterfront and in the winter it's a joy to be near the open wood-fired oven. Either way, yay!

This place got me back onto Yelp. And not because I want to complain, but because it truly is worth writing about. I recently visited Portland and a local mentioned this place to my family as something we may want to check out. I checked out a few reviews on Yelp and gave it a whirl. Pros I love a good thin crust, wood fired pizza and Flatbread delivers ... Their ingredients are organic, locally grown produce and created meats ... the beer selection was great with mostly local Maine brews on tap ... the menu has a nice selection of pizzas from standard pepperoni and mushroom to interesting "out of the box" specials ... atmosphere and decor are totally hip ... your view is the downtown Portland waterfront ... Call ahead seating. If they are not too busy, just call ahead and get your name on the list. My 45 minute wait, ended up being just 10 by the time we got there ... But the biggest 'pro' is that freakin' oven. One big ass, hot, hot, hot wood burning oven. There is an open kitchen so you can watch it all go down, and the hearth oven is a centerpiece that is just fun to watch pies go in and out of. Cons I suppose the wait would be a bummer for some, but take advantage of the call ahead seating ... I would have liked a bolder, tomato flavor on the pep/mushroom pizza I had. The pepperoni was very tasty and gave most of the flavor. I was hoping for a little more tomato and basil taste to come through ... No kids menu. This is a pizza joint, so I guess in a sense the whole menu is a kids menu. But maybe a mac and cheese or chicken fingers option might not be so bad. What I ate: Our Organic Salad, Pepperoni Mushroom Pizza, Carne Pizza (Special) We planned on getting a salad and a pie. But with the price of the salad almost the price of a pie, I decided to forgo the salad and get two small pies. However .... our server said she could do one large pie, and split the two "flavors" (for an extra $1) and then we could still get that salad. Not only was this awesome, because we would most likely not end up with leftover pizza that we could not take back to our hotel, but we would get to try the signature salad. This was such a great suggestion, because this was one of the top salads I have ever had in my life. Organic veggies with crumbled gorgonzola, seaweed and a sesame dressing. It wasn't the usual balsamic vinaigrette fare. The sesame dressing was so good, coupled with that seaweed. The Carne was a special menu item that included locally made chicken sausage, squash and cranberries. This was heaven. The sweetness of the cranberries was a great touch. The pep/mushroom was "okay." If not for Flatbread's amazing crust, this would have just been ordinary. Although I give props for the locally made, nitrate free pepperoni. If you are visiting Portland, this is a must do! Take a break from the seafood and go there. If you are local, then you already know what's up.

Probably the best wood fired pizza in Portland at this time. Crust is perfect, with the proper bubble and char. Salads looked beautiful, but I didn't have room to try one. Pizza toppings are creative and seasonal. I had scapes on mine! When have you ever had that option? Scapes are the flower stems that grow from garlic bulbs. I would compare the taste and texture to scallions, only better. One strike: They pride themselves on being organic, local, green, etc., yet they use great wads of aluminum foil to send your leftovers with you. That isn't green. Something wrong with a good old fashioned cardboard box? I think not. Menu-wise, their pizza is so good that I don't understand why they there is no dessert pizza... The possibilities for deliciousness are endless. Enjoyable experience over all, but probably best to go at an off time. And bring your own take home container.

Oh flatbread. You just fail to live up expectations. My quick tip: come here for dashed hopes of excellent pizza and timely service. I was craving pizza on my drive up to family in Portland so I called ahead and ordered one of their specials. It sounded so good and my mouth was watering for the 25 mins it took me to get to the Flatbread Company. Perfect timing, I thought, that's how long they said it would take to make the pizza. I walked up to a pleasant looking, yet somewhat disgruntled hostess who was happy to take my $20 for the pizza. I then proceeded to wait another 20 minutes for my pizza to come out. When I inquired All I got was a cursory "I'll check in on it again..." in actuality it looks as if it would take them 7 mins to cook it. Just very disappointed with the service and the description of the pizza just sounds so much more mouth watering than it actually tastes. A good example of marketing at work.

This place is adorable. All the menus and decor are created from kids artwork, and the interior has a rustic wharf-appropriate kind of feel. The wood-fired pizza oven sits adjacent to dining room tables, which created a cozy feel on the chilly, rainy day we were there. On to the food. It took my boyfriend about 7 seconds to decide on the Coevolution flatbread, and I was in full agreement once I read the description. It was a white pizza with kalamata olives, roasted red peppers, red onion, goat cheese, and mozzarella. So good!! Perfect flavor combination. The crust was thin, flavorful, and herby.. almost like focaccia. Not at all the kind of crust you want to leave behind on the plate because, you know, its just crust. We finished the meal with a chocolate chip banana bread sundae. Again, delicious. I'll definitely be keeping The Flatbread Company in mind for future visits to Portland.

Good pizza, salad and ice cream sundaes. Not a huge menu - a few salads and about a dozen types of pizza, but you can make your own too. Good options for vegetarians and vegans. It was pretty busy but you can call ahead to get your name on the list ahead of time. The service was a bit slow but I guess that comes with the territory in a busy restaurant in a laid back city. Reservations for groups of 10 or more.

Fabulous thin crust pizza made with extremely fresh, organic ingredients. They lose one star for only having beer & wine. This girl wants some vodka with her slice! Gorgeous location right on the water. The outdoor seating is perfect on a lazy summer day.

Flatbread serves beautiful rustic style pizzas, using fresh local ingredients! Their special combinations are hit or miss, but always vibrant and interesting! Wow, great pizza. On a recent visit to see friends, we all had lunch on Flatbread's deck. It was an awesome experience. Did I say great pizza? Will they deliver across the country? We order FOUR different pizzas for about six of us and we pretty much ate it all. We ordered their two specials and then two regular menu items. I can't remember the names, but it was awesome!

Definitely recommend Flatbread. We had an awesome lunch there. Everything is local - and the farms are listed on the blackboard - a nice touch. Pizza is delicously prepared there in the wood fired oven. Salad was fantastic. Service was more then adequate and quite friendly. What more could you ask for?!

My wife and I love this place!! sweet trendy/hippy spot in the old port. great atmosphere and great pizza! Only complaints could be the crazy waits for a table every night. sometimes we wait an hour. best call ahead. The only other thing is though the staff are nice, they aren't always on top of things. Maybe Hippies shouldn't be servers but atleast they are really nice!

You either love this place or don't. There's not a lot of in between. The Good: Beer selection, ambiance The Bad: The "pizza". Calling this pizza is just a stretch. It's bread with stuff on it, and in my opinion, it's not all that much stuff per pizza. Personally, I find it to be seriously lacking and the fact that they make the pizza a big, irregular rectangle means that there's a lot of crusty cuts and big chewy corners and then one thin, crustless one in the middle you can't pick up with out loosing the few meager toppings that are on it. If you don't finish it at the table, done bother bringing it home. It reheats to the consistency of cardboard (even if you reheat in your own oven and don't nuke it.) The salads are good and the beer too, but Ri Ra's next door has that as well and better. In the end, "flat bread" is really a trendy, gimmick that seems to appeal to hipsters who want to feel like the pizza they are about to eat is somehow special because it has less on it. In a town like Portland, you can do far better than this place.

I absolutely love this place. I've been here four times in maybe six years on trips East and it never disappoints. Gorgeous organic salads, great local beers on tap, and of course the homemade organic italian sausage! Great deck out back on sunny days, or sit near the brick ovens in the rainy fall.

We went with a couple of friends this spring. The grunge, hippy, chic, atmostphere is actually pretty cool. Most things in the restaurant are recycled with a big wood fire oven in the middle. This place just screams, "Welcome to Portland"! I loved it. They have very few meat options for pizza and since I'm not a vegan, vegetarian, or organic nut I was hesitant to eat the pepperoni... but I must say their home made pepperoni and I asked for fiddleheads as well... that was the best pizza I've ever had. So great! I can't wait to go back and the best part of the meal was I was full and left feeling healthy with no grease ball for a belly.

Damn hippies! No really, you should read these menus... some long blurb about listening to the sound of your soul rather than the sound of your cell phone on the back... all the food is described over and over as "organic," "nitrate free," etc, enough that you're like, that's really great but I GET IT!!! (This coming from me, who has been known to be a dirty hippie). All that aside, the pizza is absolutely delicious. They have mastered the art of pizza dough. This dough is crunchy on the bottom, yet soft and chewy. Pizzas are made in a hand-built wood-fired oven that sits right in the middle of the dining room, so you can watch your food being made. We tried 4 different types of pizza in our group. The community pizza (with mushrooms and caramelized onions) was delicious. We also tried a special that was basil, tomatoes, and parmesean, also very tasty, and another one that came with olives and goat cheese, yum! The least impressive one was the vegan pizza. I mean, if you're going to include vegan pizza on your menu, you should make it, you know, interesting somehow. Instead we were given an olive and onion pizza without cheese. That's it. No fake cheese, no tofu crumble, no caramelized onion spread, no nothin. Just a pizza without cheese. Mmmmkay... it was fine, but a bit disappointing. The salad was also disappointing. We paid $6 for a salad that was tiny (think: side salad), and had some seaweed and sesame seeds in it. If that was what was driving the price up, I'd personally prefer it without. The staff seems high, with our order being messed up at first, and some looks of serious confusion ensuing. But they handled it well, considering how baked they all were. No matter what, this is primarily a pizza joint, anf the pizzas are fantastic, so Flatbread's still gets 4 stars from me! Check out the back patio overlooking the water for an extra treat.

Incredibly good pizza. I am much more impressed with this place than with Otto's. I was kind of not expecting very much because of the hype, but it definitely lived up. And the atmosphere is amazing, I love the fire going in the giant oven open to view for everyone and the open water with boats coming in right out the window. Salads are also REALLY good. One of the places I'll miss most in Portland.

Loved this place! Best pizza ever, maybe only second to the thin crust pie found in Manhattan. Everything is organic and delicious. The vibe in this place makes you want to hug a tree, and I don't hug trees! ;-) We ordered two large pies, but tried 4 varieties by doing half & half on each. One half was regular tomato sauce, the other three all had a basil pesto base with different toppings; feta cheese, mozzarella cheese, olives, fresh tomatoes, and all sorts of veggies and yumminess!

Wonderful wonderful pizza!! Very crowded, doesn't take reservations, but you can sit at the bar for quicker service. The pizza was light and wood-fired. Lemonade was also delicious, sweetened with Maine maple syrup! I definitely recommend this place.

Four stars only because the pizza and beer selection is a bit smaller than I'd like it to be, but what they've got on their menu is excellent, quality food. Had a table near the open oven, was very warm and wonderful during the cold Maine winter ;) Started with a delicious, simple salad, then got a half of two different pizzas; one was a special with shrimp in a thai peanut sauce, the other was eggplant and veggies. Thin crust, perfectly cooked, fresh ingredients, amazing meal. Service was fine, food was better, atmosphere is very very cool. A must visit place in Portland.

The best thin crust pizza in Portland. Do not try to convince me otherwise. I always get the organic salad and their vegan pizza. However, I modify the toppings to include roasted red peppers, mushrooms and kalamata olives. Simply awesome!

As New Yorkers, we get pretty snobby about our pizza, but Flatbread Company was awesome. We kept it simple and ordered a Jay's Heart -- a plain, normal cheese pizza. Excellent! Fresh ingredients, perfectly cooked. Service was great. I reluctantly knocked off a star for the lack of selection on the menu -- it'd be great if they had some sort of appetizer other than salad.

Friendly staff. Nice if you want to sit and see a bit of the water. Small salads, though, fresh. Pizza is not thin and the cheese is greasy. Only go if you want to sit by the water. Lots of kids.

On the advice of someone who lives in Portland (and Yelp reviews) I tried out Flatbread when I was in Portland for work. It's pretty good, but could we please all agree on *not* calling the spherical food served at Flatbread Co. "pizza"? It looks like pizza, smells like pizza, even has cheese and sauce (sometimes) like pizza, but flatbread is *not* pizza! If you go there expecting flat bread (amazingly truthful in their advertising), you won't be disappointed. Yummy flat bread made in a big ol' oven in the middle of the restaurant. Fresh and good. Flatbread Co. also has great ambience (nice wood benches, tables and chairs, boathouse feel and view of the water) as well as a super friendly waitstaff. Our waitress brought us samples of beer to help us decide which one to order. So nice! Now, don't get me wrong, my heart (and stomach) belongs to San Francisco (sorry, Vacationland!), but when traveling to this lil' northeast town, I'd stop in here for a nice bite.

this place is amazing. they have a big, spacious dining room and a little bar. the location is right next to the water. the decor is nice...the ambiance here is like the ambiance that chain restaurants try to copy but can never achieve. the service was good, not crazy good, but still good. i tried the hot lemonade sweetened with maple syrup, and it was sooo good. they have some good craft beers to enjoy with your pizza as well. the pizza is SOOO GOOOD. and the weird thing is that it came out really, really quickly..like maybe 10 minutes after we ordered at most. not sure if that's normal for this spot, but we did order a pizza with no meat on it so maybe that has something to do with it. the kitchen is open, though, and you can see that the guys cooking the pizza are like a well-oiled pizza makin' machine.

Flat soda, marginal service. Pizzas were delivered 15 min apart. Everyone else seems to love it so maybe its just a fluke.

They have a very friendly staff and a lovely dining space as well as a large bar. Next time you are down by the water, don't miss this lunchtime gem!

Yes. They get it. Pizza on Display, watch them fire the oven and pull em out quick. Great Food at Great Price. Oak fired at 800 degrees. This stuff rivals the best in the world. Great local fresh tasty divine. 6 adults with beer, 120$.

  • Whit B.

  • Pinky T.

  • Allison C.

  • Jimmy S.

Go hungry!

They sell 3 things. Beer. Pizza and salad. Pizza is great. Beer selection is top shelf. Attentive staff. Beautiful spot right on the water. Highly recommend. Maybe they alcohol and wine too....so 5 things.

Best flatbread in Portland. My favorite is the Homemade Sauge. For a single serving or lunch for two I would suggest the small size (its not small at all). They also have a great craft brew seletion.

Good pizza, really great ingredients and the music and beer is phenomenal. also the server was attentive in the correct amount. parking can be a pain, but commercial street is always a pain.

The pizza here can't be beat. Always try one of the specials!! So many delicious topping combos on them!

Excellent service, great food, great beer selection and dogs allowed on the patio. Very good option!

Five stars for location and decor. The quirky fun atmosphere and the open wood oven made it a great experience. The service was very good also, but I have to say we did not love the flat breads, so I have to judge by the food first.

Delicious! first time here and very happy.

Excellent. Atmosphere excellent. Food fresh, tasty, and excellent. Staff incredible. A great place to hang, drink a local beer, and eat some incredible pizza and salad too. Highly recommend.

Ok - what can I say ? I can't give them enough stars for freshness, fun times and attitudes. On one vacation, we ate their twice and loved both visits. Great flatbreads, awesome salads and atmosphere you cant beat on the water!!!!!!

Great views of the docks! The gluten free pizza was amazing! The staff are super friendly and laid back! This place is great for kids and family too!!!! Go here!

Good luck finding parking, remember that in Portland, you can park anywhere on the street after 6 pm for free!

Not a five star restaurant but for flat bread pizza it's exactly what you want. Great for everyone in the family aged 1 to 100. Kids love it here, mine are always happy when we go.

This is a local chain that makes some really awesome flatbread (aka fancy pizza). We got the coevolution which had goat cheese, olives, red peppers, onions, garlic.....mmm....sooooo good. Definitely would come back!

Great spot for lunch with a view of the port in the beer garden style back patio. I got the Jay's Heart pizza on the gluten free crust and it was the best I'd ever have. Lots of beers on tap with one gluten free option."

Loved this place the first time I went. It's really a great thing to support a local business that's using locally-grown ingredients. When I went back a second time, the kitchen staff butchered my friend's order. The good news is the waiter noticed and immediately asked for them to re-make the pizza.
