I remember this used to be the Free Street Taverna. I'd walked by it many times over the years but never went in. However, relatively recently, the place was totally remodeled and renamed Dogfish. I'm not sure what it used to be like but it is really well laid out and modern now. The menu is relatively small as is the beer selection (that small selection is pretty good though!) but what they have is well thought out and covers most common food choices. I ended up ordering the basic burger. It turned out to be one of the best burgers I've had in a very long time! It came with potato salad and that was really good too. I found the experience very enjoyable and I plan on making this a regular lunch stop. I would give it 5 stars if they had more craft beers on tap and expanded the menu options a bit.

Food good and excellent service. 3 dollar Longtail draft! We were in a rush and they were very accomadating with suggestions. I had the salmon salad. I loved the unhurried comfortable bar side table.

Lousy service. Wait staff and bartender drinking made made a really long wait for food. Food was just ok. Limited menu, nothing special.

After a long hot & humid morning of pounding the streets of Downtown Portland, we narrowed in on this joint, seeking to cure our empty tummies. And boy did this place work - cheeseburger and a local ale for moi, open-faced cheesesteak sandwich for the missus. All went down easy, and stayed there to allow us to enjoy the rest of the afternoon. As a bonus, we met a nice couple from Decatur, Iowa who recommended a nearby art museum, of which we thoroughly enjoyed. Would come back if it were closer.

Very casual atmosphere with friendly bartenders and servers. I didn't expect to walk into a place like this and absolutely fall in love with the food. I ordered 2 honeybombs around noon and Grace was very accomodating from the minute we walked in the door. For lunch I had a California Chicken Club and side Caesar salad. Let me just say I am the queen of club sandwiches; I order them practically everywhere and THIS! Dogfish has the absolute best club sandwich, ever. From the first to the last bite you can taste the contrast of all the flavors but they blend perfectly and the chicken melts in your mouth. I am not a fan of pork or bacon; I usually don't understand America's obsession with it. When the menu says apple smoked bacon, they mean it and it is fantastic. The avocado tops off the sandwich and the ciabatta bread is fresh. Grace is fantastic and the food here is well worth your visit.

Probably the best meal you can get in Portland. The Buffalo Chicken Pita with extra bleu cheese on the side. Put my reputation on it, for whatever that's worth.

So, we stopped into this place around 10:30 at night and, although it had some good blues music playing. We stopped in for a quick wobbly pop and some dinner because the sign outside read food and beer. We asked the girl behind the bar counter what they had for food .. she then gave us a totally disgusting look and said "yeah we have food but ... you might want to got to Nosh or somewhere else for food" Really? I appreciated her honesty but this basically told me that their food was total garbage. She told all of the patrons that were bellying up to the bar the same thing... It really ruined what could have been a great situation and experience. I know that you were probably closing the kitchen so, if your menu is not good, then change the menu. Such a let down but we moved onto some really good noodle soup down the road.

Dogfish Bar & Grille was an awesome time. My friend and I were in town for two nights and were heading to another bar when we passed Dogfish. The decor, atmosphere, and live acoustic music drew us in. The place was not crowded, nor was the music so loud we couldn't talk. A very casual but warm atmosphere, paired with great music and a great staff. The bartender, John, was friendly, personable, and attentive. The drinks (mustache rye!) and chips and salsa were also really good. He encouraged us to stay until closing, despite being the only two left in the bar (it was a Thursday night), rather than asking us to leave so he could close early. Overall, an excellent place to sit, drink, and catch up with friends!

Stopped in after the art walk last night with a small group of people for a drink. I ordered a $9 tequilia cocktail and everyone else ordered an $8 vodka cocktail. To make a long Story short, the drinks were all incredibly watery, so much so that I said something to the waitress and asked what could be done. She left and spoke to the manager and bar tender, came back and assured me that all drinks are made with the same pour. She offered to replace 2 peoples drinks with another (even though we drank half of the first drink), we agreed and she returned with fresh drinks. The 2 drinks were only slightly stronger than the first round. Needlesstosay I was not Happy to be spending $9 on a watery drink and a waitress with an attitude. Will not be returning.

Pathetic. We walked in a little after noon on a Sunday. There were only two employees in the dining room: the bartender and a waitress who was also seating people. It took about 20 minutes for the waitress to find time to take our order. She never stopped by our table again. About 25 minutes after she took our order, she accidentally delivered both of our kids' meals to the table next to us, who ordered a good 10 minutes after us. She realized her mistake when that table accepted the grilled cheese but told her they didn't order a hot dog. Instead of admitting her mistake, she slunk back to the kitchen and hid there. 15 minutes later, we paid for our drinks and left, without getting a bite to eat or even visit from our waitress after 40 minutes of waiting. We wound up eating stale pastries from Starbucks and spent the afternoon at the Children's Museum with two frustrated, stir-crazy children. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place, especially if you don't have an hour to waste.

I ordered the haddock sandwich, as did my husband. Mine was very over-cooked, so dry that the fish was squeaky when chewed; my husband's fish was ok. The cole slaw was good as were the fries but I was surprised that there was an up-charge for the sweet potato fries since the waitress hadn't said anything and I didn't notice it on the menu. They have a small, but good, selection of local beers on draft.

Friday night Jazz night, super, was our reasoning for going. Cute spot with nice people, staff and patrons. We did not eat but all the food going past us had great presentation. Reasonable prices. In an artsy area of Portland that we really enjoyed. The posted pics appear to make this place look more casual/university bar atmosphere than it really is. It was clean and all the patrons were mature and the crowd was diverse, although mostly 20-30's age group. We are early 40's and fit in fine.

Dogfish is still my go-to place in Portland. Live jazz music on Friday, excellent beer on tap, friendly service. They just added a new burger to the menu called the "Dogfish Burger" -- it's an 8oz cut of beef served with white cheddar, applewood smoked bacon, romaine lettuce, tomato, ranch dressing, sauteed onions, and BBQ sauce. I got the burger without cheddar but added mushrooms, and it was out of this world delicious. They serve it with kettle chips and a pickle, but you can substitute the chips for any of their sides. And... Sam Summer is on draft there now :)

Ambience is nice with local beer selections. Food not bad, not good.

Meh. I've experience better is exactly how I feel about Dogfish. Came here hoping for some good beers on tap and decent food but I was disappointed in both. For a bar and grille (especially in Portland) there wasn't a great selection of beer. Food was standard bar food but not that good. I had the sliders and at best, the "patty's" were diner quality. We started with spinach dip and it was bland and tasteless. On a good note my husband said his salmon sandwich was good, but not great. There are better places in Portland. Doubt we'll be back.

Best burger in town. You can either get the sliders or the 1/4 pounder. They grill the bun!!! And the pickle. Let me tell you abou the pickle. Best pickle in Maine behind Full Belly Deli. Once in awhile my friends think I am crazy but I get a platter of pickles making it feel like Katz's Deli. The ambiance is Portland. Dark and exposed brick.

The basic burger is one of the best burgers I've ever had. The patty was about an inch thick and was grilled perfectly. The bun was buttered and grilled, also perfectly. I had mine with bacon, jalapeño, red onion, lettuce and tomato with ketchup and Dijon mustard. I also chose the potato salad and thought it was also excellent. It was a nice dinner and we sat on the front deck. P.S. The Yelp iPhone app doesn't let you post reviews so this review is continuing a day after I started it. I've decide to promote the burger to THE BEST BURGER I've ever had, due to the fact that I haven't stopped thinking about it. I apologize if I've raised your expectations to an impossible level. I can't wait to get back there to see if it was just luck. P. P. S. Finally made it back to this place and got the same burger. I was not disappointed.

This is the type of place I would go to if it was where I lived. But alas I live in MA and it is in Portland. With that said we stopped here to get a drink or three....and just relax after a day full of walking around and watching the gay pride parade. The staff (especially the bartender we had) were friendly enough. One waitress kept complaining about how busy she was and all. The inside was not busy at all- during the two ish hours we were there only four other people sat at the bar, two tables sat for early dinner but I guess the two decks (where she was stationed at one) were swamped. The bartender started doing table service at 4 and offered her to switch to inside but that didn't last- I guess she realized lack of tips as no one was really inside. Hmm. Anyways we had a good experience here. Reasonable prices for drinks and a knowledgable bartender who was friendly.

Thumbs up for three dollar taps on Monday night. But the wings -- at fourteen bucks a dozen -- were so small that when they arrived, my buddy said "I thought you ordered a dozen."

Very good meal. 4 of us had sandwiches and a burger. Very good. Beer selection was nice, mostly local brews. Definitely would come back.

We went here to see some live music, and Dogfish did not dissapoint. Ordering at the bar is tough due to the beer towers creating a fortress, therefore funneling everyone to two areas to order.

With all the options in the area this bar is a definite AVOID. Was there on a late afternoon and got OK service from the bartender. The real annoyance was listening to the wait staff complain about life and banter about the locals that come and go. I felt that they had no clue about space and time or even care that a customer was present. But I guess this is why they are waitstaff at an underground pub. The food was nasty...I got the steak sandwich with potato chips. The steak sandwich was under cooked and they cover it in some slime that may be cheese. Way better options in the area.

After an exhausting excursion for wedding bands, I was starved and happened to spot this place across the street. We dined here around 3pm-ish and the place was less than half full. So there was really no excuse for the slow service we received. I will say, however, that the food was good. I got the tomato and mozzarella sandwich with potato salad which was actually quite delicious, along with the salmon chowder (a special that day). I was convinced the salmon was out of a can because the chowder tasted too fishy. My companion tried the lobster roll (also a special that day) with potato chips, which he said was "non-traditional but tasty". We also tried the duck pot stickers as an appetizer, which were also tasty but again took way too long to come out. I'd say this place puts a healthful spin on traditional bar food, and many items on their menu seemed to include fresh ingredients. Interestingly, I overheard the waitress say that they do not have a fryolater, so you need to go elsewhere to satisfy that burger and fries craving.

I just tried the Dogfish Bar & Grille for the first time the other night with friends after passing it for years and I'm really glad I did. The atmosphere was cozy and there was a great jazz quintet playing when we arrived. It was packed, but we immediately got a table for 5 upstairs without calling ahead. The service was friendly and attentive. I ordered a beer and their chicken club sandwich and it was fresh and delicious. They do the potato chip/potato salad thing instead of fries, but that was perfect with the sandwich. One of my friends got the burger and it was huge! It came with almost an entire salad on the top, 2 onion rings and who knows what else. It was literally 6+ inches tall. The prices were great too. I would definitely go back and recommend it to anyone who wants a nice meal.

Went with the fella on a weeknight whim. The 1st place we tried that night, on Congress St., was so slammed they couldn't even give us an estimated wait time for a table. The atmosphere at Dogfish was much more mellow & much less crowded; perfect for unwinding after a long day. Happy discovery: for $2 less than the basic big burger, you can get 3 sliders. The fella got a big burger; I got sliders (with bleu cheese, YUMMY!). His burger looked amazing, but my sliders were a lot less messy, & I preferred the meat-bun ratio of the sliders. It was also easier (& more appetizing) to doggy-bag that last slider I couldn't finish than it would've been to take home an unfinished hunk of huge burger. Sometimes, sliders can be a bit on the dry side, but Dogfish's were juicy & delicious. Totally revisiting when I have another burger craving! Also had a cup of fish chowder, which was great. Creamy, with plenty of potato & fish chunks. Service was totally fine. Our waitress was friendly, food came out pretty quickly, no issues at all. We were loving the music.. some of The Cure, some Depeche, some Pixies. All groovy & mellow & harkening back to what may have been our glory days. Minus one star because of lack of french fries. I'm pretty meh about potato chips; they just don't cut it as a burger accompaniment in my world. Will be back!

i walked in with my daughter around 5 pm, and was greeted by no one. We walked up to the bar, and a nice guy came up to us and asked if he could help us. Me and my daughter both felt uncomfortable, so i asked if we could just eat at the bar(my daughter is under 21). Two hipster type girls, sitting at the end of the bar, who worked there, said we should sit at a table, and not at the bar. I normally would agree, but nobody greeted us, so we felt uncomfortable just grabbing a table. The young guy who waited on us was trying really hard, but he obviously hadn't been trained as regards to the menu. We ordered Nachos, but received Quesadilla's, that weren't very good. I also ordered a steak sandwich, which was soggy and impossible to eat as a "sandwich", since it was falling apart...and not in a good way. We definitely wont go back :(

This place is alright and I'd go back. However, from now I will stick with their traditional bar food options, like wings, nachos, and burgers. This time, I got the special ribeye steak, which was not worth the 20.99 price. Nor was the duck pot sticker appetizer which was 10.99. My husbands seafood sliders were good. I enjoyed the live music with the option of being in the bar area or the separated upstairs dining room where you can still hear the music playing. Like I said above, stick to the traditional bar food menu options if you get hungry, and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Nice atmosphere, good food, live music, and snappy service! While driving around in circles looking for parking near a different restaurant, we found Dogfish Bar & Grille and decided to bail on our original plans and get a bite. We were seated immediately and the service was great (Thanks Norma!). They have outdoor seating on two patios and also have plenty of inside seating. There is a bar area if you just want a drink or also nicer seating to stay a while. The veggie burgers were really yummy on a nice and crispy toasted roll with mango mayo. The whole parking situation in downtown Portland was unmanageable and would keep me from going back down there for dinner during our vacation.

Sunday afternoon. 12/30/12 We tried to get into the Art Museum, but the line was really long so we decided to have lunch first. Turned out to be a poor choice. We were seated by a guy (the bartender?) and the waitress (the only help we saw) came over and asked about drinks. My son and his friend ordered beers and off she went .... she never, the whole time, asked me if I wanted anything. We took about 10 minutes to order. After AN HOUR she came back (and all the people who had been in the restaurant before us had been served, eaten and most had left). She said the food would be out soon .... that a large party had ordered just before us. Do you think she might have mentioned it before then! Or brought us a little something? The seafood sliders were horrible .... a mashed paste of something fishy with lots of bread and no flavor. The Jerk Chicken sandwich was also tasteless .. the sauce was slippery and the chicken was dry. The California Club ... ordered by the girlfriend was great, she kindly shaded as we choked down the rest ..... we were REALLY hungry by then. When the waitress asked if we wanted dessert we said no. Then she said it was free and we could take it if we wanted! Still, no. We just wanted to get out of there. Should have asked if she would comp. the beer but, just wanted to get out!

Love it. Cheap drinks, and every time I've heard a band play there, they've been great. Outdoor patio if you choose. And the food is pretty good. Its not the top restaurant in town, for sure, but its definitely worth what it costs
