In an effort to describe to Matthew K. exactly how superior East Coast pizza is to pizza here in the Midwest, I sent him a bunch of links to awesome Portland, New Haven, and New York pizza. And then I remembered Bill's Pizza... the last destination for me after almost every night of drinking when I was 21ish. So, even though I haven't been here since I was 22 (five years?), I HAVE to write a review. Located right across the cobblestones from Gritty's and the mishmash of seedy Wharf Street bars, Bill's after 1am (you never realize how early Maine's closing time is until you move away and realise most other states are way later) is always a cluster-eff of debauchery and indecency that includes drunken young people rubbin' up on each other, yelling in Maine accents things I can't actually write here for fear of being politically incorrect, and shoving each other out of the way to purchase slices of big, floppy and not very tasty NY style pizza. Bill's is about feeding your drunkenness, not about quality food - I'd never eat here sober. Many a glorious, room-spinning, word-slurring night was spent at Bill's by both pre-and-post 21 year old Melanie B. I have fond memories of dumping parmesean cheese onto friends laps, sharing the gross, tiny bathroom with girls I didn't know because everyone goes to Bill's to pee after bars close, and yes, peeing in the alley behind Bill's... those were the days. So, why give Bill's one star? If you were there for the pizza and were let down - you've been warned! Next time I see you at Bill's, I hope we both don't remember in the morning. :D

Good place! Yummy pizza!bad past but they are cleaning up their act!

Fair pizza. No ambience. Boring salad. No other food options besides pizza & subs. Enough garlic on our pizza (garlic, tomatoes) to slay count Dracula. On the plus side, no one was there around dinner time so our kids could run all around.

  • Emily A.

This pizza is overpriced, wayyyy below average and only acceptable to consume when intoxicated and even then it's still pretty disgusting!

Absolutely the worst. AND EXPENSIVE! I Stopped in yesterday to get a sandwich for the first time. OK, it'a a pizza place. I get it, but many pizza places have great sandwiches. I ordered a turkey sub w/ cheese, pickle, L&T and light mayo. I GOT a large hot dog roll (like the kind w/ the sides trimmed off) w/ 2 slices of sara lee type turkey two pickles and some black olives and a schmear of mayo. FOR $8.50!!! NEVER GO THERE.

When you run a business, you dont cuss out customers and be an asshole because they are wearing a children's shirt and get offended when you tell them RUDELY not to take their jacket off. Since when can a man not show his midriff. The other customers said they WANTED me to take my jacket off. Manager/employee/security was very rude and do not know how to run a business. Never give this place your money. I tip them every time and they never say thank you and ended up banning me from the store and yelling GET THE FUCK OUT in front of customers. No matter what you NEVER behave like that if you run a business. Horrible service and pizza is sub par. Fuck bills pizza.

went there over the weekend for the sake of nostaglia and the old days of college and the Old Port not good pizza I loved the pizza when drunk as a college kid and now 20+ years later - pizza is bad a plus - they had a small gluten free pizza on menu (thought that was nice)

Ahhh! Went here for a quick slice and found that the pizza taste like chef Boyarde. My partner actually threw up after he ate here.... Not sure if it was food poisoning or not. Avoid with your life. If there was a zombie invasion I'd rather be eaten by the horde.

Not sure why Bill's gets such bad reviews on here. This is my first time to Portland, so there is probably better pizza around but I decided to try Bill's. To me, it seemed like a fine place for lunch. We got a half ham and pineapple and half pepperoni jumbo pizza. The pizza was a little expensive, but I'm used to overpriced Ocean City pizza, so this was a nice break. They don't go light on the toppings - each slice was completely covered in the toppings we ordered. There was plenty of sauce and cheese, but a little too much grease (because of the pepperoni, but still too much). In fact, the reasons I am giving 4 stars involve the restaurant rather than the food. The music was very loud, and although I liked it, some may not enjoy the 80's rock music they play. Also, the bathrooms were covered in graffiti. It's great pizza, but it's probably better to take out.

Ok, so Bill's Pizza isn't the "World's Best Pizza" but it IS conveniently located right on Commercial Street in the Old Port. We have been here many times with friends after visiting the bars; it's PERFECT for a quick, late-night snack. It's a fast, grab-a-slice and go kind of place and is fairly inexpensive for the size slice that you get. Plus, there's some great people watching from the parking lot...If you are downtown, at night, wandering around looking for some cheesy pizza, look no further!

This is your classic spot to wander into when you're drunk (close proximity to the bars & open super late). Their pizza is okay, nothing special, but I've always had a soft spot in my heart for their chili. Just don't go in there later than 8 or 9pm, especially on a weekend, unless you want to hear the drunk ramblings of a frat boy.

Our second time eating here in the last few years. Have to say I really like this pizza. Lots of cheese and a nice sweet sauce. Stopped in after a cruise and it was nice that they are open until 2:00 am. Prices are a bit on the high side but it is a tourist area.

Average pizza (it's hard to screw up pizza). Typical pizza place decor. Price on the pies are a little high. Good draught beer selection (for a pizza joint). $4.50 for a Shipyard. Overall it's an average pizza joint in an above average area. Felt a little out of place to be honest.

Wow, Maine pizza sucks. Maybe they should try some lobster or chowder on their pizza because this is as bad as it gets ladies! Sign says been in business for 65 years. Lol. That's a joke. Can't say it any clearer than pizza sucks. Anyone from NY who tries this pizza will say same thing. Only reason I had a slice was because I ate like a pig for breakfast and wanted just a slab to hold me over until I go hard at dinner tonight. I would have enjoyed a lollipop better than this joke of a slice.. And they charge $3.50 a slice. Place should be closed down.

    (1)
  • Jessica H.

$3.50 for a lukewarm, almost flavorless slice. They warmed it up when we paid, but biting into it there was no heat, very little tomato sauce flavor, and unsalted cheese. Possibly the only redeeming factor was the crust, which tasted a little like pizza hut's pan pizza. There's a lot of good food in Maine but for pizza, the $1 slices in NY are much tastier for a fraction of the cost.

We stopped here on our vacation. Very friendly, clean and great service! We had a combination Pizza and the crust was light and crispy. The "secret recipe" sauce was plentiful and quite tasty. I saw other people with lobster rolls that were huge and half the price of some of the other places in town. We ended with hand packed ice cream from a local dairy. Blueberry and Peanut chocolate swirl. Again - verypleased.

I'm still sticking by my 4-star rating. I recently came on St Patrick's Day. They had some amazing pizzas in the oven. I ordered one, and realized they gave me the wrong slice. They let me keep the wrong slice and brought me my correct slice. And the pizza was spot on. I got a steak bomb (the accident slice) that had more steak than cheese and sauce combined. I also had the Reuben slice; also tasty. For $4.25, I'd come back again This is your old-school greasy style pizza, and Bill's does it well in my opinion

Bill's is a decent dive joint in a great location. Pizza is marginally above delivery chain pizza places, price is o.k. Staff have all ways been friendly. Place could be kept cleaner.... Right on the water front and Bill's has it's own parking which can be really handy when Portland is busy. Good spot for families when you have a couple of hungry kids and want something fast. Same for after the bar... Not for foodies....

Average pizza. Perfect location, right on the water. Lots of things to look at. Wasn't too busy when i went in.

  • Joe M.

Stopped in for a slice. Unfortunately they only had pepperoni and cheese but that was fine. It's a run of the mill pizza shop, don't expect to be blown away but it was still pretty tasty! Moxie in a glass bottle, my favorite. They also sell ice cream but we didn't try it. Looked good though.

Having traveled around a lot around the country, this has got to be the worst slice ever. Came here for a late night slice, it was a stale overcooked cheese slice topped with cold and raw vegetable. Avoid it considering the brilliant places around !

A very important place to stop by at the end of your evening in the old port. Instant gratification. One slice won't be enough.

I'm giving bills 4 stars for the fun, circus atmosphere at 1:30 am on a Saturday night. Sit in the window and enjoy the shit show happening before your eyes. The constant flow of drunk people and umm "lightly dressed" groups of girls are highly amusing. It's like a drunk soap opera. Like beef and boards, you go for the show not necessarily for the food. We had a large cheese pizza, I actually liked it and it was a very short wait. If you are barhopping in portland's old port, definitely make this your last stop.

  • Andy M.

They don't take credit cards after midnight and the pizza was cold. Crap there are a hundred places better in the area.

  • Susan W.

Fun local pizza joint in the Old Port. Nothing more, nothing less. Seems like some of the reviewers had much higher expectations. We enjoyed our slices snd cold beer.

  • Jason N.

Stopped by this pizza joint as I was cruising down commercial and, to my surprise, this place is no where CLOSE to my expectation. Overpriced pizza; the staffs didn't even bother greeting customers hello or goodbye; pizzas were too greasy and very oily... I expected better, being in a location that it is now. Unless you black-out and are desperately craving for dough and cheese, then pull a teeth and go for Bills.

Great pizza. Great service I will definitely be back. Really loved this place.

Bill's may not be the best or most creative pizza around Portland but it is the most reliable. Fairly basic slices but they taste great and they've got some of the best hours: need a slice late on a Tuesday... go to Bill's. The atmosphere is also kinda cool, old school diner-type. Bill's Pizza is classic

You can walk by this place all day and see almost no one, Late night is a different story at 2 PM its fairly packed. If you are not blacked-out I suggest not going in as this is some of the worst pizza you will ever pay for, Ellios cooked in a toaster oven tastes better. Why can't Bills just close and a decent Pizza place go in here, it would make a killing with it's location.

Good quick pizza slices...if you are looking for inexpensive pizza in Portland (near the wharf), it is worth a visit.

Dear Tourists, please don't judge our pizza based on what I'm guessing was a horrific experience at Bills Pizza. Yes, its rank. The smart locals know this. They're cardboard, ketchup, and American Singles dish they call "pizza" is absurdly nasty. And they jack the prices because drunks and tourists-who-wont-travel-past-the-kitschy-downtown will pay for it. Do yourself a favor: if its the afternoon, walk over to Miccucis on India St. and grab a Sicilian slab. Or, if its evening, walk up to Congress St. and go to Ottos. Neither place will disappoint or leave a bad taste in your mouth about your culinary experience in Portland (which Bills is guaranteed to do)!

Horrible pizza. the worst. seriously. I ate it when i visited Maine. I live in Jersey where we have great Pizza, but this was just unacceptable. Maybe you'll eat it if you are drunk enough after a long night of bar hoping in Portaland. Sry Bill.

Went here in the off-season, as it was the only place open. No one was in the shop but it was after lunch so that could be why. We got a whole pie, as there were three of us. We were able to put toppings on our third of the pie which was really cool. My friends got the hawaiian style, and mushrooms. I had green peppers. The pizza was large enough, but my complaint was how OILY the pizza was. It was dripping in oil. Not sure what kind of cheese it was but it was swimming in oil. For 3 people it was about 5 each. Not bad. I wouldn't go back again. The owner was really really nice though.

I honestly don't know where people's heads are with these reviews. I'm from NYC and I live here now, but I spent 20yrs in Portland. Bill's is the only place for a decent, thin slice of cheese pizza. They don't claim to be anything other than what they are. It's a tad greasy, yes, but all pizza is that way! The items have gone up in price since I went as a pre-teen/teen, but since I only go like once a year while visiting my folks, it's worth it.

  • Linda S.

This is a late night kind of place. The crowd and atmosphere make up most of my 5 star rating. The pizza is the extra here! The owner is very colorful and make the visit worthwhile!!

    (5)
  • Jeffrey R.

Two star rating? Why so much credit? This place jacks up prices for the drunks late at night, and for what? A nice big slice of grease to wash that booze down with. I know I'm being harsh - but this pizza isn't that great.

This place is pretty mediocre but the lady and I had to come here to satiate our fatty acid needs. We just had a lobster dinner before this, but for some reason, we just had the munchies real bad. We had beer throughout the night so I'm assuming that had something to do with it; so here we were, in a Portland pizzeria, looking for a good slice. But lo and behold, the slices were $3.50! What the flying f-bomb is that? Even plain slices in NYC are a somewhat reasonable $2 or $2.50, but this!? Dude, now this is rude! Instead of getting two slices, we decided to just get a 10 inch pie which seemed to be a better value. The girl working the counter and the oven almost burned our pizza but it actually turned out okay. We weren't able to eat it right away because we wanted to rush to our motel room and eat it there, so we may have lost some of the desired taste, but it was still pretty decent. But, I mean, come on! When you're spoiled by the NYC pizziaolos that keep New Yorkers fat, nothing else will compare. I won't come back here again. I'll probably just get another lobster roll from somewhere.

  • Andrew F.

Pizza and beer? Don't mind if a I do. This is pizza like your local pizza dive: Hot, a bit greasy, and magically delicious. Their smalls are perfect to split with a friend, or glutton yourself with if, say, you may have had a few drinks prior. Open quite late, I hear that this is the late night after-drinks place to eat in Portland.
