This place has the potential to be a must stop attraction based on location and atmosphere. But subpar food and grouchy service drags this place down. We ordered clam cakes, a clam roll, and a clam lunch because it's a clam joint. The clam cakes were solid and did not disappoint. The clam roll was nothing special and same with the clam lunch. The highlight besides the freshness of the clams were the onion rings. Plan your day accordingly because you will need to take a nap after this meal. My advice to them would be to come up with a better clam dredge because not only did it lack flavor but it lacked the essential crunch that any good fried clam should have.

I thought this place was so cute! A small little shack on the waterfront. How could we go wrong? I am on the search for the best clam chowder in Portland and it definitely WAS NOT here. The chowder was so watery and bland. It was all potatoes and barely any clams. I was so disappointed!! I had the clam roll as my meal. This was a little better but the clams were sandy and greasy. My hubby had the haddock sammich. He said it was okay but nothing special. But his fries were soggy.

We were a bit skeptical when the bathroom smelled moldy and no one else was there around lunchtime. We ordered a clam roll and fried shrimp with fries and cole slaw. The clams were greasy, soggy, and lacked flavor. The shrimp was similar. The fries were eerily greasy - maybe they were old and unable to absorb grease?? The cole slaw was inedible. I've never spit anything in a napkin before that bite. The woman at the counter is very sweet. They could use a pro to come in and set them straight. All the makings of something magical, but it falls far from the mark.

It's a seafood shack so don't go in expecting things like your silverware brought to you, table side service, or even indoor seating. That being said, for what it is this place is good. The little old woman behind the counter was very sweet and efficient. We ordered and sat outside under the tarp as the clouds were poised to rain (side note: don't come here if it's raining heavily) and she quickly brought our food out to us. The food is generally fried, and for fried food it's great. I had the oyster basket and they were crispy and delicious, although the fries were a bit greasy. My boyfriend had the lobster roll and onion rings; the onion rings were great, but the lobster was a little too heavy on the mayo for our taste. If you're in the area and looking for some fried food give Benny's a try, as an added bonus it has a parking lot unlike some of the other seafood places on Commercial.

Great clam shack! Small, rugged place. Plenty of outdoor seating with umbrellas and across the street from the harbor. $13 for whole belly clam basket and hand cut fries. Clams were very good! Also very friendly people here!

This place is small and on the side of the road. Tried the fried clams, lobster roll and crab roll. All were OK, none was spectacular. The clams were a bit greasy and the rolls were OK sized.

Got a fried clam basket ($15!) and was not impressed. Clams were alright but the fries were terrible and barely edible... Greasy and almost still raw. There are so many other great places to get fried clams in the area and Benny's does not even compare.

Greasy, greasy and soggy. Whole belly clams weren't great, very greasy and a little undercooked, slimy so batter fell off. The fries were straight amateur. Cut a potato up, put in warm oil. Like you'd do at home, same results...soggy& greasy. The place is kind of rundown & dirty but I wouldn't have minded if the food was better. On a pretty busy road, with a view of the oil drums & commercial equipment. A near miss...sorry.

Whole in the wall place along the side of the road. Can be delicious food, but inconsistent. I'd give it a try for some cheap seafood in maine if you are in the area. The place was seriously a shack on the side of the road. When you walk up to it, there is open patio seating on the outside and some shaded area with chairs close to the trees. This place is definitely not classy, it's down to earth, plastic patio furniture with checkered plastic table cloths. The nice thing was that there was a newspaper on each table and I saw several patrons just sitting there and enjoying their food while reading the news. The place had a good feel to it. There was only one person manning the joint. We ordered a few items: Lobster Roll with fries $14.95: The lobster roll was delicious. The lobster meat was in big chunks and they didn't overuse the mayo. The fries seemed fresh and the bun was crisp. I had gone back for another lobster roll at the end of our trip and second time around it was not the same. I went about half an hour to close time, so I am not sure if it was the timing or whatever it may be but the lobster meat was not in large chunks, it didn't taste as fresh and overall the experience was disappointing compared to the first one. Crab roll with fries $8.50: The crab roll was surprisingly very delicious. The flavor of the crab was predominant and sweet. The only complaint I had is that the meat was not in chunks, they were mostly shredded which took away from the texture and overall taste. 1 Pint Fried Clams $13.95: I am personally not a fan of fried clams. For all the ones that I have tasted, they seem to be too chewy, too greasy, and never filling. This is no exception.

Can you give no stars? This place totally sucked. We went there for lunch, Knowing we had a limited amount of time, we ordered lobster rolls and clam chowder, thinking it was prepared already for the lunch crowd, After a 20 min. wait, our lunch arrived. I opened the clam chowder lid, only to find the smell of rotten milk or cream. It was nasty. We returned it and even the cook said "Yuck, no more clam chowder," He shouted to the kitchen staff. The lobster roll was OK. It was all knuckle meat no claw or tail meat to be had. Anyway, I could have given the lobster roll at least a one star, despite the greasy roll and the onion and celery they tried to sneak into the lobster salad, but the wire bread tie in my lobster roll leads me to the no star rating. we will not return.

Fun experience to stop on side of the road to go to a "clam shack," but i was there in August and they were out of items, took longer than expected, and food was a little overly greasy and heavy. Very nice girl that served us, though.... bottom line, its nice when it's good weather, but you could find just as good quality if not better right down the street at Becky's Diner.

Tried the lobster roll and a fried clam roll. Lobster roll was delicious but it was barely 5 inches long and cost $12. The fried clams were a bit greasy for my taste, but it was yummy with the coleslaw and bread. Same price and size as the lobster roll. The store itself is simply a small shack on the side of the road. You can tell where they added the deck and put a roof over the top. The tables on the backdeck were just on the ground. There was grass and bugs everywhere so we ate in the front. It's very cramped and it took 15 minutes for the food to come out. Overall, I wouldn't visit it again. There are better places with comfortable dining and better food for a few more bucks.

Commercial st. in Portland, the heart of seafood country and this place is still in business? WOW!!! the food is terrible, needs a complete overhaul. Gordon Ramsey Benny's needs your help NOW!!! If you eat here don't order any of the seafood none of it is any good. Keep driving down commercial st. there are many better choices than this just down the road.

It has been too long since I have been home and had a great fried clam plate and not have to go to the poor house after. Benny's is not just a dive it is THE dive. I have seen shacks on the beach in the Caribbean with less"atmosphere"... I got the fried clam & shrimp plate, it came with cole slaw & fries. The clams were very good, the shrimp was good but bait like for size, the fries appeared to be hand cut and the cole slaw had almost no dressing on it which made it very dry... and the tarter sauce was pre-packaged from Kens, fairly tasteless. The price was very respectable, the seating was open and airy, the food was quick & hot. And one of the best things about Benny's... the girl who took my order was B E A U T I F U L... I would recommend Benny's as an A-OK place for seafood.

this place is a total dive on the side of the road. We saw it driving by and went back later to get a lobster roll and it was worth it. only $12 for a roll and bag of chips. Half the price of one of the other places we had and way better. The seating is not so great, but i can get over that.

if you like cold chowder and rubbery, chewy fried clams, this is the place for you! While I keep hoping that the food will get better, that never happened. After today, I am done. The people that work here are nice. The fact that they are working, and not on the dole surprises me. No dental plan for Bennies workers. That and the fact that they have such a horrible location made me want to support them. I keep wanting it to be, if not good, at least ok. After being served the cold chowder, I took a bite of a fried clam. Minutes later, I had to split it out. I offered one to the guy that I believe to be the manager. His comment? The fact that the claims were like rubber was a good thing as "they last longer" in the mouth. FTP
