Everything Amigos is as a restaurant is ruined by its bar counterpart. Don't breathe inside, it smells like urine. Don't breathe outside, you'll get secondhand smoke. The patrons are typically garbage people. It is, however, a great place to go if you want to be worried about getting gay-bashed. Adios!

Misnomer Award of the Century. I have been there many times, and have never seen so much as a tortilla chips. Any time I've inquired about food, they look at me like I'm nuts and say the kitchen is 'closed'. Like, you can hear the quotation marks around closed. That said, who cares, because the name of the place should be "The IT bar of the Old Port". It is just dive-bar enough to scare away the high maintenance types, the whiners, the snobs, the yuppies, and the hipsters and other such undesirable, un-fun persons and their depressing spouses and spawn. What's left? ALL THE FUN PEOPLE! The artsy locals. The musicians. Poets, dreamers, and their cute and semi faithful groupies. The kids who like to sail but also will drink out of a keg cup and regale you with an actual personality worth being around. Random people you haven't seen in 20 years, but wanted to. New acquaintances who are like the friends you've known for twenty years. The young people who aren't just shallow jackasses. The older people who still know how to let their hair down and laugh at themselves. Great music. No cover. Bouncers who are world class, adept at keeping things fun and safe with friendly professionalism. Decent drink prices. Competent beer selection with an emphasis on value. I could go on about all the little things I love about this place... It's basically like the best backyard party ever with a couple of pool tables and some darts inside. But the patio is where its at. Yes the bathroom is a horror show. But I value the $2 PBR and fun times over a Mr. Clean moment anyday :) come on down, being a sense of humor and some cash tucked in a sock or something, let your hair down with the likes of my wise-ass self And Partay!

Came here because I was craving Mexican food and in the area. When we walked in the downstairs bar smelled straight up like vomit mopped up with dirty mop water. Disgusting. Almost left right then because I am 7 months pregnant and it was overpowering. They had the upstarts closed off but opened it when we asked if they were open. I ordered a chicken burrito and it was hands down the worst burrito I've ever had. It had unseasoned chicken, bland yellow rice and cheese in it. That's it. It was flavorless and absolutely the driest burrito I've ever had! You guys really need to get someone in the kitchen who knows how to cook with Mexican spices!! Such a fail! I added black beans and sour cream and hot sauce and it was still unbearable! I ate a few bites and gave up. Which is saying a lot because I'm pregnant and basically a vacuum cleaner right now! My wife had the pork burrito and really enjoyed it. Though it was missing any side at all (rice, beans, love??) she said her pickles were yummy and her meal at least had some flavor. She also enjoyed her margaritas, raspberry. The waitress was nice and took my crappy meal off the bill but I was still soooo hungry! Definitely won't be back for the food or the smell!!! But perhaps when I'm no longer with child and have already had a few and don't mind the vomit smell so much but want a good margarita?! On the plus side, I did see a dart board upstairs..

OH NO!! A dive bar AND a Mexican Restaurant in one?! YIKES! I guess locals really like this place?? I'm not sure if they've just never been anywhere else for quality Mexican food or if this IS IT, but the atmosphere alone was depressing. We stopped in for a couple drinks at the bar and were astounded by how dark and dirty it was. I went to the restroom and the bathroom was DISGUSTING- there were HUGE, LONG cobwebs hanging from the ceiling!! I had pondered the thought, maybe there were a Halloween decoration that hadn't been taken down yet?? But OH NO. These were the real deal. I couldn't help but nervously look around for the spider that made those things!! We didn't eat here. No, experiencing the bathroom and bar were quite enough for us! The drinks were cheap and all served in large pint glasses. So that was cool, and maybe if your drunk and it's late at night, this place wouldn't be so bad. They do have pool tables and a dart board- However, nearly sober, it felt downright dark and dirty. There are too many good places in town to make me want to return here again-

Came in to kill some time before dinner. I personally lover dives, and this is the diviest dive that ever dived. Great happy hour, $3.50 drafts. Threw some darts with my gf. 2 dart boards, 2 pool tables and some booths. Cheap beers and killer jukebox, Can't ask for anything more.

This place is a glorified dive bar where seemingly all the hipsters in Portland willingly cram themselves into. I'll pass.

The veggie fajitas were mediocre but the queso was as good as i've had and the margaritas were tasty and potent. The bar itself is the perfect setup for a nightlife establishment. There is pool, darts, and a nice patio. Positive, fun atmosphere, even though it was a Sunday and it was cold and gray outside.

The food is decent. On one occasion I visited with a group of people but after 15 minutes still hadn't been visited by a server even to order drinks and so we just left. As a bar it's great. It's a dive bar in the best sense. The drinks are cheap and it draws a fun crowd despite its proximity to the clubs on Wharf St.

Does anybody actually go here for the food? It's a great place to go to at the end of an Old Port drinking binge, since you're bound to see someone you know on the patio.

Seriously, how does this place have good reviews? It's plain awful. Bad food and strong but poorly made drinks.

I've been coming here for a long time and there are a few things that keep me coming back for more: 1) The Diverse Crowd - Guys & Girls, Old & Young, Gay & Straight, Black, White, Asian, Purple & More, Business Folk, Hippies, Bro's, FIshermen, Musicians, Artists and Vagrants - there is room here for everyone and nobody is judged. 2) The strongest and cheapest drinks I've ever known - anywhere, everywhere.... with only a couple of bucks you can find yourself a good night and few more friends. 3) The Staff - Regardless of whether it's the bouncers or the beautiful ladies behind the bar, this staff doesn't take any shit from anyone; if you're friendly and patient you'll soon find service that makes you feel VIP (i.e. greeted by the bouncers and bartenders, quick drinks, RUGGED drinks, great convo etc) 4) No Tourist (attitudes) - That's right - tourists don't last long here and it always seems to be for similar reasons. Tourists come in here thinking that the customer is always right - WRONG. Not here! If you're an impatient, entitled douche-bag you're going to have a really tough time here. Furthermore, their food service is not how you define this place - typical tourist misconception. This is a Dive Bar - and one of the best I've ever been to - LONG before it's a restaurant. If you're on vacation with your family and decide to stop in for some run-of-the-mill Mexican on the back patio, don't be surprised to see the tables filled with smoking, swearing locals pounding back beers at mid-day. TOURISTS ARE VERY WELCOME HERE, just be sure to remove that stick from your ass before entering because the typical tourist attitude is not welcome here at all. 5) The Music - Never the same. I've had nights that were filled with country music, metal, and even Lana Del Rey. Something different is always playing and if it's terrible, the bartenders will skip your shitty selection! I LOVE IT! It seems that a lot of the negative reviews have been from tourists and "folks from away" as we like to say here. And it stands to reason - this is a locals place, you don't come here for the food, you don't come here for high end cocktails, you don't get all gussied up to come here - no, this is a place where people from all walks of life come to unwind and let loose. Where beer drinking and poking fun take priority over industry norms. Where us real Mainahs come to be ourselves and have a good time. If this sounds like what you're looking for then as the old saying goes: "When in Rome, do as the Romans". If you're the type of traveler that's looking for a taste of the local culture and not just tours and monuments, this is where you'll find it. This is the Maine attitude through-and-through. If you want to get to know us, stop on by and have a pint! Say hello, shake some hands and let loose. Just remember, check your ass-stick and dignity at the door! :-P

mexican food is yummy, especially from this place! They give you free chips and good salsa when you first enter. Their drinks and food are cheap, really cheap, and the people who work there are super nice. The menu is good for die hard Mexican fans or the American mexican food lovers. They have a good selection of stuff for meat eaters as well as vegetarians and seafood freaks. My personal favorite is the fish taco, best I have ever had. great juke box and the bartenders play good music too. yum yum yum I love this place!

I went with a friend and we were the only ones there on a Saturday (upstairs) a busy tourist day to say the least , Asked for chips and salsa and was told there are $5 for them , Really? Okay I got the chips and salsa and the salsa was straight from a bottle, The pico de gallo was pretty good. Okay onto the food , I ordered a $13 burrito that was too small for the price and NO sides included, the filling was okay but it was lukewarm at best and covered in canned queso cheese(you can tell) My friend ordered the combination taco plate:two tacos, one with ground beef and one with chicken . They came in preformed taco shells you can buy off the shelf at any store. The fillings were abysmal and hardly any food in them , a scoop of almost cold rice and canned black beans . all for $9 I hear the drinks are good but stay away from the food , this place fails on EVERY level in that department . Oh and noticed the mens bathroom looked like a bathroom from a rest area , broken walls , no paper towels .Also they need to dust their ceiling fans , At least a 1/4 inch of dust on them , when you are the only people in a place you tend to notice details especially after paying a princely sum for crappy food.

We actually ate here. First mistake. We aren't from Portland, but the boy could have sworn his friend from Portland recommended the place (we later found out that was NOT true). Anyway, the food was... food. The dining room was empty except for staff from the other part of the restaurant who kept coming over to drink at the bar. Also, it's weird for me when entrees at Mexican restaurants don't come with rice and beans. Just me?

It's my own fault for thinking the I could get real Mexican food in the farthest of the states from Mexico. The food was a 3 out of 10. I would have drinks only there.

Good traditional Mexican and Ameri-Mex fare. Fresh ingredients and big portions all around. Great service and very reasonably priced. Highly recommended lunch stop while visiting the Old Port.

We went to the restaurant upstairs. Food was pretty good. I had taco salad so not a lot of opportunity for authentic experience but it was good. The queso w/beef is good; the house salsa was fresh, too. Not too loud when we went so it was a great place to hang out and talk.

This place is nothing special. And by nothing special I mean this place is nothing. Just drink heavily at home.

Everything's served in a pint glass, which means pretty much everything is a double. I forget this fact absolutely every single eff'ing time I end up here. And that's pretty much what I do... end my night here. Chalk up another point to my old nemesis... I don't remember much of anything that night... bastard. Oh, wait... they have food here?

I returned to Amigos to give it another shot, and I was more impressed this time than the last time, though not enough to upgrade it to four stars. It's a solid meal, I'll keep coming back, but I just can't give myself to give it a better than "decent" rating. Decent isn't bad, it's just not special to me :) I'm still comparing everything to Cilantro in New York City, but hey, I'm not in New York anymore, so let's be real. The nachos are still good, and I tried a salsa picante this time around instead of their (kind of watery) hot sauce. Was much better! Skipped the cheesy burrito, had a fajita, was very full and happy by the end of the meal. No complaints, service was fine, etc etc.

good bar food is nothing special but filling and cheap...a nice little place to play some pool and darts after work.

Love this bar. Pros: Cheap drinks, heavy on the hand. Laid back crowd. Smoker-friendly, but not in your face about it. Very rock-influenced music, bartenders and audience. Free darts, heated outdoor patio in the winter. Cons: Worst bathrooms in town (go upstairs ladies). Kinda dumpy, but in a way that makes you feel at ease...so not pretentious at all. Not a great date place, honestly. Unless you're a hippie, then for sure. :) Is this the nicest bar in town? Hells no. Go to Novare Res or the Top of the Eastland Hotel or Grace for that kind of night. Go to Amigos to have a few beers with your friends on the cheap and rock out to the juke box. Good times, good beer. Rock n Roll!!!!

Not sure about the food because I was told not to eat here. Beer was good, the smuttynose on tap was fresh and they had darts. Bartenders were nice and it wasn't to busy. I will make sure to go again.

My favorite bar/hangout of all time. AHHmigo's is more like it. When I visit Portland, this is really the only place I feel like going aside from the Downtown Lounge. Everywhere else (for drinking) is like being at a fraternity party (Gritty's, Bullfeeney's). Or, people they're pretending they're like... I don't even know, at the wine bar. Amigo's is a relaxed atmosphere, with pool tables, a jukebox, a digital bar games machine, and dartboards. The bartenders are nice and funny, and the drinks are CHEAP! Also, they come in a pint glass. A pitcher of PBR (an excellent choice at Amigo's) is $8, I think. Stick a straw in it! Also, there's a neat little smoking area/patio out back, where there are bands during the summer, and heaters in the winter! You can also go upstairs for food and a quiet drink, which I have never done. Getting kicked out of or not let into Amigo's is a sign you need to ease up in general. The place has a great feel and I encourage people who are looking for a relaxed atmosphere to check it out. Happy hour is from 4-8pm and brings you $2.75 Maine beers and $3 mixed drinks which they make in...wait for it... pint glasses.

I went bar hopping a few weeks back in Portland which I haven't done in ages. We ended up at Amigo's around 12am or so. I wish we went earlier! Not sure if it always plays metal downstairs or if we just hit it right but what a great time! They have pool tables and darts down there as well.

I gave this two starts because there is only one good place in the state of Maine for Mexican food. If you don't understand this, look at a map and see how far north you are in Maine. Sorry for the reality check. The only comment I have about the food is this: the salsa is Pace Picante from a jar. I am not kidding you. Enough said.

Let me start by saying that the bar downstairs is pretty cool. Great vibe, lots of pool tables and cool locals (21-35 yo). The food upstairs is..um...meh. I can live off Mexican food if its done right. This was just Okay. I had the chicken burrito topped with Tomatillo sauce. It was seriously lacking in flavor. I had to get a side of guac and sour creme to dress it up. My friend had the Enchilada/burrito combo. The black beans, um, looked like, um... gnarly. The enchilada looked good, it was served with beans and rice, but then the burrito was completely DRY on a separate little place all by itself. It looked a little sad. Not to mention that he had to use almost the whole bottle of what looked like a homemade hot sauce to boost the flavor. The prices are decent, the service was okay. I know that he was busy, so I will tread lightly there. Bottom line, this place is good for drinking DOWNSTAIRS and that's about it.

Cheap drinks. The food is mediocre at best. Actually, its really not good. I could make better at home, and they even charge you for extras like tomato and lettuce. Lame, so I stick to downstairs. The bar has pool tables, Biergarten (with a heated smoking area in winter), and a charming dive atmosphere.

stiffest drinks in the Old Port.

Good place, friendly people. Only two dart boards, which are sometimes kind of crowded, unless you get there early. Three or four pool tables, and big booths for larger groups.

This was the WORST Mexican food my husband and I have ever had (and Mexican is my favorite food, so we've sampled many many MANY mexican restaurants). Well actually, my husband thinks it may have only been the second-worst we've had, but he can't name what the worst was, so I'm pretty sure it was actually the worst. The rice, which is my first stopping point in judging mexican food, was bland. Salsa was most definitely Pace Picante. The chicken in the taco and burrito were without any seasoning or flavor. My husband ordered the fajitas and thought they were OK. Overall, it seems like a decent dive-type-place to grab drinks, but definitely don't go here looking for good Mexican food. The only star in my rating is for the service - our waitress was friendly.

you know what, i liked this place. i only went for beers on a saturday night but they had a decent selection of stuff on tap for comparable prices. the crowd was very friendly, inside and outside. the bathroom stalls kept me super amused. in one stall someone wrote some diatribe with incorrect grammar, and someone else came along, "corrected" mistakes, then wrote "learn how to wight a sentance retard" in large letters. fantastic. i took a picture for lifelong remembrance.

Once when I was in college I brought my dad here. He said, "this is like every bar I went to in College." Pretty much sums it up, beer, pool, big deck, and everyone you know is here or just left. Staple.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
