So i actually did not get to try any of the food or beer so i cannot attest to quality of food or service. However, walking in was a hassle itself. We walked in upstairs and the bartender didn't know what seats were available and so directed us downstairs (apparently there are two entrances). We went down to the hostess stand where the hostess wasn't sure where we could sit and could not give us an estimate on the wait. Sorry, but isn't that the job of the hostess, managing the flow of the tables? Bad communication between hostess and servers. Tough to make money that way.

Food is usually great but the service is almost always super slow-- not just food but drinks take a really really long time to be delivered. I understand things can run behind but every visit we have all commented on how slow the service is! My husband and I live in town and have started to pick other places because service is so slow and waitstaff really isn't very friendly -- our last waitress was outside smoking a cigarette and then came in and took our order-- It was disgusting

Pretty good. Loved the service they let us come in early because we were starving and were extremely nice about it. Our waitress had a British accent and was amazing. Food was ok-- not amazing but ok. It was the service that really made us happy.

If you are looking for below average food and extremely slow service, this is the place for you. A hamburger should not take an hour to prepare. Very disappointing. We've visited the Publick House twice, and both times have been a let down. We will not be returning.

service was sloooow, when we got our ousters they seemed to be just pulled out of the seam as they still had dirt all over them and the plate. almost lost a tooth on a chunk of the shell which was broken before serving it. not worth the price, also the burger I got was over cooked, chewy, and just not worth it. we also got crab cakes that were meh, and a crab salad that was also meh. not going back.

Great all around place. My husband and I used to come here every week for trivia when we lived in Damariscotta (my favorite trivia night that I've been to in Maine, by the way) and have tried quite a few different things. All of their pizzas are great and my husband loved their burgers (and pretty much never deviated from that order). I was partial to their English Nachos for a trivia snack (although I don't think they're any longer on the menu - I have ordered them and they still make them for me). I've also heard great things about their mac & cheese and my father-in-law was a big fan of their fish and chips.

A great place to grab a pint and an appetizer, they have a great selection of local beers, some made with sea water, quite different. Nice bar to relax and enjoy sports or live music.

This place is fantastic!! We stopped in and didn't expect much -- but oh my gosh did they go above and beyond. I ordered the herbed chicken sandwich, my husband ordered the burger, and we got a kids pizza for my toddler. Can I just say that chicken sandwich may be THE BEST chicken sandwich I've ever had?! No joke - fresh herbs were obviously part of the rub and/or marinade, because I could taste fresh rosemary and thyme, and then it comes with an herbed Boursin cheese. Just fantastic. My son's French pizza looked really fresh and the French bread was soft and easy to eat (important for someone without molars), with fresh mozzarella. He's a picky eater and he ate the whole thing! My husband's hamburger was so good he inhaled it. And their pub fries were perfectly cooked and really great. The service was so good, and the waiter was so attentive he even brought a kids cup of ice water right off the bat, which my 2 year old appreciated as it was a hot day. My only criticism is the lack of a kids changing station anywhere, but hey it's a historic local place and the bathrooms were nice but small, so I wasn't too worried about it. Overall great experience, thanks guys!

Pretty good! The menu's pretty enticing, so be careful not to do what my companions and I did and order so many appetizers that our meals went direclty into carryout boxes. First - get the Tempura Cauliflower with buffalo sauce. You're welcome. Another thing to note, the Smoked Pork Nachos are hyper filling, even when shared between 2-3 people; it is a gross understatement to call it a starter! The Angry Al's Oysters are okay, but with the gorgonzola, bacon, and hot sauce, they were oppressively salty. My wife enjoyed her lobster roll; my seafood stew (a special that day) was good, but a little oily for my liking. My sister-in-law enjoyed her Haddock Rachel sandwich and her boyfriend said the burger was pretty good! Oh, and did I mention their awesome beer selection? About twenty different craft beers are available on tap. Can't decide? Get a flight!! This is the kind of place that's great to get some beers and some appetizers and enjoy with friends. A good deal!

Well, let's start with the fact that the Pork Nachos with the restaurant smoked pulled pork was awesome. And the rest of the meal was, from a taste and quality standpoint at the same level. Also, the wait staff were great and were concerned that we enjoyed our meal and had what we needed (in this case, because of the hot day, plenty of water). But (and you knew there had to be one) the wait for the food was overly long. As other Yelpers have commented, this place is not exactly fast. Not the absolute worst that I have experienced, but pretty darn slow. Second, and this is really what drove the three star rating, was the flies in the place. We had to change tables because we were being dive bombed and no one could even enjoy their drinks. Then when we moved to a new table, while there were less flies, there still were some bothering us. Now, while the food was great, it was hard not to get a little grossed out with all the flies. Still, also because the food was great, I am hoping that the flies were an anomaly and we will be willing to try again.

Great location and food; Thanks for a fun evening of dining. Other nights have music, open year round on the Damariscotta River.

We went to Publick house because the Eider Pub was closed for repairs on cooling system. The oysters on the half shell were excellent, they were out of Grey Goose Vodka at 5:30 pm on a Tuesday,,,,hmmm. Kinda expensive, but not terrible. Might go back for pub food, doubt if we would do the formal dinning room.

While the menu is huge, I think that might be the problem with this place - they're trying to do too much I think! While it seems like a great place to get a beer, I can't say I recommend the restaurant. Perhaps it's an okay spot for a lunch of soups and sandwiches, I went for dinner. Total pub fare, which would have been fine if it was good, which it wasn't. I ordered the Smoked Duck Salad, which came with a cider vinaigrette - inedible, due to the toxic-level of garlic employed. (Garlic in a cider vinaigrette?). The smoked duck unfortunately tasted like how the inside of a leather shoe smells - like chemicals or as if someone dipped each piece of duck in that fake smoke flavoring. Thankfully the candied walnuts were okay, so I ate those, the lettuce and the cranberries. Then when I got home I ate dinner. My dad, who picked the restaurant, was pleased with his "English Nachos" - a.k.a. french fries covered in cheese and salsa. But then again, he eats hotdogs over the sink so I'm not necessarily recommending you take his advice. I'll try this place again. Maybe. Probably not as there are other restaurants in town that do a better job by focusing on less.

This used to be such a good restaurant, in the past two years it has gone downhill. What has happened to all the great food? Sadly we'll not be returning and we used to bring all our friends and visitors there previously. Do not ever order the PBR chicken appetizers, all of us this evening felt they were terrible and a bad taste is in our mouths. Cole slaw wasn't good either. Hopefully they will start to care about their food and their menu once again as it's a wonderful place inside with a friendly hostess and fun tables to sit and watch the traffic.

We had a lovely lunch at the Newcastle Publick House and will definitely go back the next time we land in this part of Maine. Our server was very nice and the service was superb. The food was good. We both had fish tacos. They had great flavor with mild spice. The only downside was the shell...it was very strange and made the tacos hard to eat. The french fries were great...you could tell they were made out of fresh potatoes and not too greasy.

I grew up summers in the area (So. Bris) and still make it up quite a bit each year. This place opened a couple years ago and quickly became my favorite restaurant in the area. Great apps, entrees, beers, atmosphere... they have it all. This is one of the top 5 spots we take friends when sightseeing. I really don't have a single complaint about this restaurant. Their half-shell oysters made me a believer.

Pulled pork nachos are divine! The desserts here are delicious, as well. Didn't get a chance to try their beers, but heard some folks at the bar discussing the various local flavors on-tap. Will have to do that next time! Yum.

Let me start buy saying, my review may not be an accurate ranking of the typical experience at the public house, but it describes mine. We definitely caught them on a bad night, kitchen was struggling, waitress had her first night and the band looked awful. My advice, get muscles as an appetizer, hamburger, draft beer and get the hell out. All were delicious and fareley priced. Buyer beware on anything else. This place reaks of a tourist trap who does two things great, grasp exceeds its reach when it comes to everything else. Let me preface my tirade with, we never raised out voice and tipped 20%. The manager on duty should be embarrassed at how she handled all of the issues. She is the real reason my family and I will not be returning when we take our annual vacation. Double sad news, our friends who live here year round were so embarrassed for recommended this place, they wont be going back either. I'd love to try the muscles and burger, but work to hard 50 weeks out of the year to take a chance. Fail 1 -They advertise "Beers and Oysters" but were out of oysters at 6:30pm..... Fail 2 and 3 - They took over 10 minutes to get us our beers, and when she brought the muscles over, spilled broth all over my mom-in-laws leg. Noone offered club soda, tide stick pen, or anything. She came out with napkins, and made a comment that tried to blame the mistake on a slanted table.... Donde esta accountability? Fail 4- The sweet potato fries, which other yelper's RAVED about, were cold moosh, but she replaced them when we explained our displeasure. To be honest, what they brought our were slightly warmer moosh. But I love the hustle. Fail 5 - My wife ordered regular pizza, they brought her a wheat pizza, which was burned. By this point our poor waitress was so flustered. we were dealing directly wit the hostess/manager. I told her the pizza was not what we ordered and card board. She actually said to me, "Well thats the kitchen's fault".... My first thought was, WTF do I care, but I think she was coaching me on the fact that the waitress doesnt make the food. There are a TON of cotton heads in Pemaquid, so I could see gramma and her gal pals stiffing the waitress. PS We all had a nice laugh when she asked us if we wanted to take the pizza to go. Fail 6 -The the manager comes out and says," I am comping half of your pizza"... Again, not to be a jerk, I love the effort but who the hell comps half a pizza, considering my wifebarely touched it and it wasn't what we ordered. F for effort and execution. As we were leaving our estranged waitress was one second from smashing into my mother in law with a bowl of broth... so the good news is she was improving her service with every hour worked.

Great beer and a good sandwich. Blackened seasoning was nothing special. They should just spend the money on some Paul Prudhomme's.

Newcastle Publick House is a good place to go to get simple food in Newcastle/Damariscotta area. The service is average, but better than normal for the area, and the food is always at least average but usually better. I always hit up the Publick House every summer for a good burger and like their food. The bread on the burgers is amazing. They get really busy during the summer season so call ahead and try to get a reservation

The staff was extremely friendly and gave us great recommendations for food. We went with the veggie pizza which was on a thin, whole wheat crust with spinach, onions and red peppers and lots of cheese. They had a nice selection of local beers on draft and they have a nice patio outside. At dusk the Mosquitos came out so we went in and sat at the bar and listened to a great blues singer and his guitar. Inside we ordered the pork nachos which had shredded pork and barbecue sauce. Not awful, but not my favorite. We will definitely be going back again soon!

Delicious, local, homemade, consistent. Must go! Pizza is the best in town, try the Haddock Rachel! We saw a Rainbow out east windows in late afternoon.

Down there at the Publik House they have got a number of things nailed down, including attitude, a great building, good location, and tasteful interior. I give the Publik House solid props for trying to get plenty of live local music in during the week, but they don't utilize their space properly. I'm giving this place the 4-star because it's the best place in town.

I am never disappointed with the Publick House. They really do have all the good stuff you look for in a restaurant. They have a stellar wait staff, and the food is fantastic. Distinctive, yet not unfamiliar. The dressings and sauces are homemade, and in season many of their veggies come from local farms. But who's at the pub for veggies?! Fantastic smoked pork makes for a delicious addition to a plate of nachos, and their jerk wings are phenomenal. On tap you will find your favorites as well as delicious local brews, and they have live music in the pub on Wednesdays. Definitely worth swinging off of 1A if you're blazing North.

Great selection of beers and food. I had the pulled pork BBQ sandwich, which came piled high with tender, juicy meat, a tangy and sweet BBQ sauce and a crunchy, creamy coleslaw. The sandwich came with a side of fries and I washed it down with pumpkin beer. A+!

Excellent beers. Airy attractive dining room. Fanstastic oyster and shrimp concoctions for lunch. The place was full at Tuesday lunch and everyone was smiling. Loved it.

I enjoyed the butternut squash lasagna here, and my companions enjoyed their meals as well. I found this place to be a little loud for company including some folks who are hard of hearing (of course, it is a pub) and the service to be a bit on the slow side, but I'd definitely come here again to try more offerings from their extensive menu.

This place sure serves up a delicious white bean hash. "White bean hash?" you ask. Well, it is the side dish that accompanies their wood fired grilled scallops, perfectly seared and not overly cooked. The hash is delicious: with bits of pancetta and diced potatoes mixed in with white beans, you just can't go wrong. The fried haloumi is appropriately decadent and the sweet potato chips are great to munch on while savoring Geary's London Porter. Along with a tasty looking selection of sandwiches and other entrees, there is a interesting variety of beers (both bottled and draught).

The only thing keeping this place from getting 5 stars was the service. It is very slow (15 minutes to get our beer? Really?). Go there when you have a slow evening planned. Now that the complaints are out of the way... GREAT FOOD! Amazing quality and quantity that I would happily pay more for. Muscles were great and the fish and chips dinner came with three huge cuts. I had to bring some home. The atmosphere is nice (love the old wood floors) and they have a decent beer selection. If you're in the area, check it out.

Though the food was very good, the service and wait time were atrocious. We arrived at 12:30 on a Sunday, 4 adults, one child. There were maybe 3 other tables when we arrived, yet we waited for over 15 minutes for one round of four beers. Then she walked away without a word, though it was obvious we were talking about ordering starters. Never a word about specials, luckily we found the board and read them ourselves. Finally, we placed the order. Apps arrived, they were very tasty. We finished our beers and the food started to arrive (in shifts) and we were informed that they didn't want anything to get cold while waiting for other entrees (fine with us) But yet, never an offer to take more drink orders. Finally, we flagged her down to order more drinks which finally arrived for our last few bites. Foodwise, Pulled Pork Nachos, Deep Fried Local Cows milk cheese, and smoked ham and cheese sandwich were the favorites. I will give it another try because the food was good, but man, do something about the poor poor service!
