I just had by far the worst experience I've ever had in 20 years of going to cole farms. It was a holiday so it was naturally busy. We got there and were told that it would be a 20-25 minute wait for a party of 5. We waited over an hour before starting to ask what was going on. They then told us 20 more minutes. After waiting 25 more minutes and hearing the same numbers being called twice since we had been there, we asked again. They told us they needed to do smaller parties first. This entire time people who had gotten there after us with larger parties had been getting seated first. This made absolutely no sense to me or any of us. There is no reason we should have waited that long whether a smaller party came after us or not. (we were only w party of 5) After coming here my entire life and loving it, I now look at it as a place of horrible service and incompetent employees. I was actually surprised to see many more critical reviews on yelp as well as especially since this place has been loved by many for so long. Current management really needs to get this place under control so it can survive and thrive another day. I for one, will not be coming back for a long while.

Came to this restaurant after stopping by the Maine Wildlife Park and unfortunately, found it to be pretty disappointing. I'm pretty sure that the fish chowder was made with frozen fish, and I think that's pretty unacceptable for any restaurant in Maine. The fish was really chewy and didn't have much flavor. Looking at some of the other dishes that were served to the customers around us, the lobster rolls and fries also looked prepackaged and not freshly made, and the vegetables of the day looked indistinguishable. My friend who got the chicken bacon ranch sub thought the chicken tasted funny, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was frozen too. The servers were very attentive and nice though, and pretty quick in getting the orders through. You could definitely find a better place to eat in the area.

Used to go all the time. The bar was a nice addition. The service in the restaurant is good. But the bar? Forget about it. We went through the stages of grief on the service. First denial. "It's not that bad." Then we started to make jokes about the excruciatingly slow service. Then acceptance. Then we just stopped going.

Loved this quintessential Maine restaurant. Three of us showed up to a full parking lot and actually had to wait for 10 minutes for a seat, even though there are nearly 300 seats. We got Marcia for our wait person who was fabulous and personable, serving us huge portions of home cooked diner food. We especially loved our booth, the onion rings and terrific service. We highly recommend Cole's for its large menu and yummy food!

This place is almost as old as its clientele. The second star is earned with ridiculously cheap prices. Lunch specials are soup kitchen price range. But the food... eh, passable, but this place is legendary for no good reason.

Manager was ranting about other customers in earshot of everyone. Yelling across the room to a waitress. Slow service. Unprofessional. What happened to the family atmosphere and fair prices? I paid $3 for a side of carrot sticks. Wow.

We love this place for yummy breakfast with great service!! They have a breakfast buffet with fresh fruit, pastrries, eggs, cornbeef hash, sausage, homefries, yogurt, granola, french toast and more.

Just came here for lunch for the first time. We normally do breakfast, which is usually good. Basic but decent. Disappointing that breakfast is over at 10:30am.. I'm not sure why since it seems to be their only strong point, and it feels very diner-ish vibe so why not serve it all day? Anyway, for lunch I got a chicken sandwich almost $6.00 for the sandwich alone. I also ordered cole slaw for a whopping $2.89 extra. The chicken was ok, nothing fancy, but bland bland bland. The cole slaw was seriously coleslaw veggies in sugar water. No seasoning or flavor. I couldn't even get through it. Favorite part? Definitely the giant string of slimy black rotting cabbage that was mixed into my coleslaw. Yum. And being pregnant it definitely turned me off to my small, overpriced and under-seasoned meal. To drink I got "apple berry juice" which was some kind of concentrated watery juice drink that was awful and $3.00. Gross. My wife got fish and chips. Nothing fancy, the breading needed seasoning. Badly. She sadly got the cole slaw as well. Tiny and overpriced neither one of us finished it. Our 12 yr old daughter got an egg salad sandwich. It was "boring" eggs and mayo, No seasoning. are we noticing a trend yet?? NO LOVE. It's like the chef is bored or over it or just doesn't care. Someone taste the damn food and put some decent prices on your food too? If it was better if be willing to pay more. This isn't Portland and Gray could really use a decent restaurant, but sadly Coles misses the bill. Huge prices with the only upside being that our waitress was very nice. Not her fault, problem definitely lies in the kitchen and owners. I really wanted to like my food as I live locally and would bring them business. But sadly it's missing something, care. I'll be sticking to breakfast from now on if I can make it there in time (ridiculous) and if I can ever forget the black slimy cabbage string.

My parents live in Maine and love Cole Farms. Let's just say I am not as ecstatic as them to go there all of the time. The servers are very friendly, and the prices are very low. However, the taste of their food sometimes justifies their low prices. The shrimp here are too small and not flavorful enough. However, the fried haddock sandwich is very good. My favorite here is the Macaroni and Cheese, which is topped with ritz crackers. However, it is only available on Monday. The lobster rolls are not very good compared to other places in the area. The Ice cream here is very good. I would recommend Cole's, but stay away from the shrimp or lobster. And try to come on a Monday to try their delicious macaroni and cheese.

This is a DINER. It is NOT DiMillo's, folks! I came here as a kid, but years later, we always enjoy coming back. My wife is NOT from Maine, and she thinks it's great, too. She's picky about getting Maine shrimp, and not the "popcorn" shrimp, and Cole Farms has them. (If you think you are getting fresh shrimp in tourist season, you are sadly mistaken anyway. Shrimp season is late winter/early spring.) We also like their crazy sweet cole slaw (but it might not be for everyone), and their little crock pots of baked beans (pea or kidney). We traveled recently, and started relying on the Yelp app in cities, and it helped us find some great places. If I read the reviews, I guess I would have skipped Cole Farms. I had to cast my vote. I've been to the iconic Moody's a couple times, and sure it's cute, but I'd rather come here. (I'll have to go see what Yelp folks say about that...!)

The food has gotten better over the last couple of years. I eat breakfast there often and it is always good. The service is good as well.

Good food, not great but you get what you pay for. Have been there many times and there is a good, frequently changing beer selection. I have never had an issue with dirty beer lines and the bar staff is very friendly. Prime rib is acceptable (not 'prime' by any stretch) but at least you can get it almost raw! Subs are good and almost too large to eat. no matter how busy the service is always good. Two people can eat, have a few beers and get out for 60-70 with 20% tip....good value for sure.

We hated it for late breakfast/early lunch. I had steak and eggs as a safe bet, and it was OK for diner food. The steak was a little overdone and tough. I asked for some Worcestershire Sauce or horseradish, but I was given a little plastic cup of some unidentifiable sweet brown liquid.I left it alone. I tried one of their special house-made clamcakes. It was heavy and gummy. The coffee was New England brand, which I think tastes like dust, so I did without coffee. My wife asked about the fish. The server (who was very good) was honest and admitted that all the fish comes frozen. We don't eat frozen fish (certainly not in Maine!) but there was not much that appealed to her. She tried the sugar-cane skewered shrimp. Those were flaccid and looked as if they'd been pressed under a brick. They were heavily but inexpertly seasoned - she pushed the around and abandoned it. The cole slaw was sweet; neither of us cared for it. The papery dinner rolls with butter-like spread were the best part of her meal. The server was great, especially in the face of an ever-deteriorating situation. She did not charge for the shrimp, but we tipped her for it since she did the work anyway. It wasn't her fault. We won't be back to Cole Farms Restaurant.

Hadn't been in a long time. Really felt like their fried chicken. Was SO disappointed. Bland, no spices, not even salt. The mashed potatoes were worse. Very bland. Too bad. Used to be good. Service was good though and homemade deserts are wonderful

We visited here last week for a family lunch. I'm sorry to say it was terrible. I had a stuffed haddock that tasted like it was a pre-made and frozen meal that was heated up and slapped on a plate. Even the sauce on top looked and tasted like it was part of the frozen ensemble. My girlfriend had salmon that was raw in the middle and cool to the touch. Others in my group had burgers, they looked pretty good. I wish I ordered that. The inside of the place is old and outdated. I think chef ramsey from Kitchen Nightmares needs to visit this place. It's a place that is long beyond its prime. Don't eat here.

I'm slightly biased as I grew up going here with family all the time. They have not changed much other than adding options to their menu, now serving beer and wine, and they accept credit cards! They also added a bar area with TV's which is nice! Service is fine. Prices are low. It's diner food so you can't expect gourmet. The plain old cheeseburger is one of my favorites! The pies are great also. So if you're looking for a cheap, comfort food, diner-feel restaurant than go to Cole Farms.

I love the idea of a neighborhood diner, but this doesn't cut it for me, even though it's within walking distance. The chicken fingers are the only thing I feel 'safe' getting. The salad comes out of a bag--it's not fresh at all--and I could buy the dinner rolls at the grocery store. I took a visiting North Carolina friend here for breakfast and was embarrassed. A hotel breakfast is better. My boyfriend has to tell them how to make a club sandwich in order to get one. They don't take credit cards and there is no bar (although I heard both of those things are changing soon). The convenience is just not worth it for me.

I lived in New Gloucester until I was about six and trips to this place are some of the few memories I have of that time. From the stuffed animals to the woodsy Maine interior decorating, it hasn't changed much. As someone mentioned, this place is almost as old as its clientele. It also doesn't accept plastic, but does accept personal checks in an era when those are nigh extinct. Some would find this too old-fashioned, but there's an ATM on site, so it's no big deal--almost charming, and certainly in favor of the masses of seniors that have roosted at the counters. You know what the funniest thing about this is? This old-fashioned diner has free wifi, and I'm sitting here in the restaurant as I write this review. I decided to stop in on my way home from a business trip to Fryeburg, ridiculously excited when I realized I was in that neck of the woods, and I'm so glad I did. Unexpected bonus points for being able to check my email. (The manager actually just stopped by and made sure I could connect.) The #1 attraction for me is their sweet and sour dressing. That red goop made me look forward to vegetables more than anything else as a kid, and that hasn't changed. I ordered a salad and was not disappointed in the least. Crisp, fresh vegetables, ice cold lettuce and sweet and sour crack. oh man. That and a drink still have me well under a $10 tab. My waitress has been pleasant and helpful. I'm a "grown up" now and am watching my figure after the holidays, so I passed on the chicken fingers and other fare I had chosen in my earlier days of patronage, but looking around it seems that the place has pretty typical diner fare. I probably would have been disappointed if I ordered a regular sandwich, but I'm incredibly envious of the man across from me who is plowing through an irresistible looking crock of American chop suey. I am also having a very difficult time passing up their 40+ choices of desserts. My nostalgia probably bumped this place up a star from its pretty typical diner status, but you know, a diner is a diner, and this one is well-established and a landmark for a reason. People love diner food, and they do it right.

I don't know what these other people are talking about, I love this place and have since I was a little girl! My family has a lake house about 15 minutes away from this place, so it's always been a summer tradition to eat here multiple times. I used to beg to eat here when I grew tired of my mother's cooking. The cooking is definitely family style, no frills or fuss. Kind of what you expect from a Maine restaurant in the middle of nowhere! The pie is crazzzzzyyyyy good!

When I first moved to Maine, a friend of mine was telling me all about this great place that I just had to eat at! So I finally gave in. I am a breakfast fanatic... this is not my place. Food is blah, I make better breakfast at home. Also my friend found a hair in his food - along with the table RIGHT next to us. Disgusting. Never again.

This place is the best! It's nothing fancy, just good old-fashioned eats at very reasonable prices! We stop here every time we're around without fail. It's a friendly family owned place and a must try. You'll love it!

I grew up in the area and in the past I would have given them 5 stars. They have made changes that in my opinion are not positive. The food is Ok, but the regular menu has been whittled down and does not include some items that I have come to expect. My favorite meal over the years has always been the open faced roast beef sandwich. Now it is only a special listed on an irregular basis. I was very happy recently when I happened to be there on a day it was a special. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in the dish. The mashed potatoes were like rock. I expect my mashed potatoes to be smooth and creamy. The waitress said it was because they make them in house. Really? She was quick to offer french fries instead that were very good. Cole Farms has changed from a must go to family restaurant to one that is just another place to eat in the area.

You can still the traditional food I grew up with in New England. Great cultural experience. My family has known the Cole family for years. Come check it out, great experience.

Cole Farms is a great local place. I haven't been in years, so I can't comment on the dinners because I don't remember them! But the breakfast was fabulous...and my coffee cup was never empty which is always a good thing!

I have goned here many times over the years but I am not really sure why other than there aren't many places to eat in this part of the state. The food is mediocre at best a and if you are under the age of 60 you will probably be the youngest one there other than the waitresses. I get the impression that most people dine here not for the bland unhealthy food but just out of habit and nostalgia.

What a great little place. Stopped off for lunch while traveling through. Although this isn't 5 star dining. It is what it represents. A small town family style restaurant. The food was good, service acceptable. But he best part was how quick the food came out. Traveling with four kids this was huge for us! No complaints everyone devoured their food. We had two salads, a burger, crab roll, and two mac and cheese. Like I said no complaints. I would return here, a nice place with plenty of seating.

Aside from the nostalgia and cheap prices, I have nothing good to say about this place. The food tastes as old as the clientele! Save yourself the money and a stomachache and eat somewhere else!

On Mondays they often have a crab roll special: 2 crab rolls, a salad and chips for $7.95. Two rolls for under 8 bucks! How exciting is that and right off the Maine Turnpike? Save your gastric juices for elsewhere, anywhere else. I would have been happier with one of those new Southern Chicken sandwiches at McD's. It's just food for the elderly wanting an afternoon out. The rolls were marginal. Between the "salad" and the lettuce stuffed rolls I am pretty sure I downed an entire head of iceberg before I got out of there. Now I have some weird lettuce headache. I sat at the counter thinking I'd get some local color- it was a kaleidoscope of forest crackers talking about gas prices, fiddleheads and ways to stay out of Togus. Togus is the VA home my siblings threaten to send my father to when senility sets in. One of my architecture prof's spent the better part of his life designing additions and renovations for Togus. Just the name- Togus? Anywhere, but Togus. The food and the prices belong in the 70's. The 70's blew. My sister warned me not to go there. You could eat the entire menu without using your teeth. The busboy (man) looked like he was in the grips of tertiary syphilis. That's mean, but he made me a little uncomfortable. I didn't even bother with photos. They do serve proper red hot dogs. NO LOBSTER ROLLS AT COLE FARMS, which is OK because I wouldn't want to eat one there.

Went on Halloween so that was a bit of an experience with most people dressed up. The menu was limited to standard fair with some New England favorites. It is inexpensive, so that is a good reason to go as the food is okay. They serve all the sauces and dressing in small plastic disposable cups like they are cost containing on how much gravy is on a plate, apple sauce or dressing. The fried chicken is the only thing I would recommend outside of a standard burger. Service was local kids and friendly.

"You get what you pay for, Alice!" That's what my neighbor used to say and boy is this true of Cole Farms. It may be a local institution, but I would describe it as the largest diner in New England. Everything is priced a la carte --- and served that way too! When the waitress delivered my pastrami sandwich my eyes grew wide - it was served on a plate the size of a saucer with one piece of pastrami ! Better yet, the fries came out later in a paper container -- no pickles with this here sandwich. The kicker was the special - boiled dinner - they were out of corned beef, but they were serving it with HAM! If the prices look too good to be true... they ARE. They get zero stars for presentation, although the waitress was extremely friendly.
