As a local, I haven't had the luxury of staying the night in one of Pete and Sandi's beautiful rooms at the Inn, but I recommend to everyone I can every chance I get... We enjoy the Pub on Friday and Saturday nights when they are open to the public with the delicious, hearty food - a small menu to choose from so if you are picky check facebook beforehand and you'll find the weekend's menu. The bar is a warm, local crowd and just our speed when we head for drinks on occasion!
My wife and I just returned from our second stay at the Old Saco Inn this summer. Both times we were there for hiking with friends. And we already want to go back. It is a perfect spot. The inn has a beautiful setting on the Old Saco River with canoeing, kayaking, and views of the White Mountains, including Mt. Washington. The Fryeburg area is beautiful, uncrowded and interesting with a great variety of outdoor activities and number of good restaurants. And the innkeepers are warm, welcoming, smart, and fun. The new owners are Pete and Sandi. We also met the former owners, Sue and Arthur. The inn continues to be in great hands. Pete and Sandi are full of ideas and very busy making the inn and the experience ever better (if that's possible.) For hikers, only 20 minutes from the inn is a spectacular loop hike over North and South Baldface Mountains (which you can also see from the riverbank.)
More like 4 1/2! We were literally driving to Portland and I found this place on my iphone and we decided to give it a shot. What a hidden gem - literally!!! As we drove through Naples and Bridgeton and made our way along country roads to fine the Old Saco Inn we were SO excited. We have not been away together, away from kids, since February and needed a quiet, calm, relaxing place to stay for one night - it was perfect. Sandy and Pete are the new owners (only had been there for 3 weeks when we stayed) and they couldn't have been more accomodating or pleasant. We stayed in Gabrielle's loft and it was so well appointed. Wonderful linens, a little balcony with a wonderful view, a sitting area....Couldn't ask for more. The Inn sits on acres and acres of land and walking trails. We were there less than 30 min before we threw on our bathing suits, grabbed the kayaks and began making our way down the river. So tranquil. We went to the 302 Smokehouse for dinner since it was just down the road and had a great time. We couldn't believe our lunch bill from Gritty's in Portland was double our dinner meal bill! The band was fun too. In the morning, breakfast included crepes with a yogurt creme and fruit, an egg souffle with choice of meat and fruit, toast, juice, coffee or tea - SUPER YUMMY!!! We had a chance to take a peak at some to the other rooms as well. All very tastefully done with plenty of space. We commented to Pete about how amazing the grounds were and that it would be an ideal place for a small wedding. Sure enough, they have a wedding taking place there in October. I would highly recommend couples take a look at the Inn for weddings, conferences etc. The grounds perfeectly accomodate large tents etc. Over all, we had a very pleasant stay and came away feeling refreshed and renewed. Thank you!

Easy going, friendly service. Well executed menu with customer friendly pricing. Great find! We enjoyed delicious Maine mussels with white wine garlic sauce and the chefs seasonal pickle board (carrots, peppers, seaweed, curried quail egg with Pullman toast and honey sea salt butter) . Our mains were the 1/2 portion of fettuccine with lobster, smoked bacon and peas with a delicate Parmesan cream sauce and a New York strip steak with lobster butter and old bay seasoning. Very memorable with warm atmosphere & folks. Don't miss the chance if you're within 60 miles or so...

Can't fathom any complaints about the food here. I've been three times, and every single thing I have ordered has been perfect, phenomenal, delicious, including the mojito. I wish this place were in my home town, or that I could steal the chef. Innovative, memorable food, quaint ambiance, fairly expensive but worth every penny. Tip: order a bunch of appetizers.

We stayed at the Admiral Peary House for our anniversary weekend this year and were very pleased. It is a beautiful old inn, very well kept. The amenities in the room (chocolates, fine soaps, etc.) were a nice touch. The innkeepers were very personable and friendly, catering to anything that we could have needed. They were really helpful with pointing out some good rides we could take on our bicycles. The breakfasts were terrific! We had very "bike friendly" breakfasts. By that I mean they were healthy and delicious! We are looking forward to our next visit to Fryeburg and will definitely stay at the Admiral Peary House again.

Fryeburg House of Pizza

Reviews:
I always think that if you know your food is bad, you might as well make up for it with a smile and great, kind service. Clearly in the world of Fryeburg House of Pizza, this was not the case. My colleagues and I were just up in the area/SACO River for an overnight trip with the company. Our department director has kindly arranged through our motor lodge this "restaurant" after a long, activity-filled day. We were hungry and looking forward to eating dinner of shrimp scampis and steak tips. As soon as we entered the "restaurant," we were not met with any "hello's" but with scathing looks at our late appearance. Granted, our reservation was for 6 PM and not 6:15 PM, but the entire "restaurant" looks miserable and empty. The first thing that we hear is the waitress's passive aggressive statement of "You're late, we expected you 15 minutes ago," along with an eyeroll. We were then unkindly shown our tables (seats reserved for 18 people) with salads on them. After the second half of our party showed up, the rude waitress then proceeded to give out name cards and try to take down salad dressing orders. This seemed to be a very difficult task for the poor girl - it looked like a 14 year old trying to solve quantum physics. When we asked her to repeat the dressings, another eyeroll appeared. Clearly, we were not blown away with the restaurant's first impression. The next hour, chaos ensued. The two waitresses trying to serve us seemed to have an IQ of a goldfish, not remembering who ordered what. (Ever heard of a notepad and a pencil?) They slammed drinks in our hands and whenever we asked for another drink or even a bottle of ketchup, it was like asking them to bring the Empire Building to our doorstep. Basically, mission impossible. When one of my waitresses was frantically carrying my chicken pesto pasta, she initially refused to give it to me, calling it Pasta la Pasta. It was clearly chicken pesto. After a few minutes, she begrudgingly gave it to me, saying that there's chicken pesto in it, but it's called Pasta la Pasta. This time, an eyeroll came from me. Our group had already pre-ordered and paid for 18 meals and 36 drinks (2 per person). We only had 18 meals and 23 drinks. My manager and director then asked for the manager to remedy this simple problem: we paid for 18 meals and 36 drinks. All we wanted were the 13 drinks that we ALREADY PAID FOR. But no, the staff only kept repeating "there's nothing we can do" for a simple math problem. Tempers ensued and management babbled on like robots. Obviously the food was horrible. My pasta was oily, overcooked, and just unappealing in all manners. My colleagues who had the steak tips poked at it feebly and we all just ate from my huge plate of overcooked pasta, which was already bad enough. Please, if you can avoid them, run far FAR away from this "restaurant." Clearly, they didn't appreciate the ONLY business they get in the area. Disappointing, disappointing, disappointing. I have warned you, reader. BEWARE if you value your life and enjoy food in general.
With very few pizza choices in town, this place may seem like an obvious one. But I am sad to say that I am going to try to get my pizza from elsewhere. When I ordered a mushroom pizza I was sad to see that the mushrooms were yellow-ish, and seemed to be out of a can. The spinach feta pizza I ordered next time was way better (thought it was frozen, not fresh spinach). My pancakes for breakfast were thicker than my thumb, and tasted kind of cakey, but they were decent. The omelette we got was a little oily, but okay. I won't say the food is bad, just not the best. The service certainly helps to make up for this, as everyone has been really nice to us.
As soon as we entered the restaurant it was clear that we were not wanted. The staff didn't manage to even acknowledge our presence nor say "hello." The food was nearly inedible, most of it seemed to have been cooked 20 minutes prior to us even arriving, and then reheated. It was extremely overcooked and over-garlicked. While the food wasn't good, the entire experience would have been better if the staff had at least been friendly to us. Our waitress repeatedly rolled her eyes, slammed drinks into our hands, glasses on the tables, and sneered as she walked past our party; as if she had way better places to be. Bringing "service" to a whole new, low, level. When we asked to speak to a manager, one became available but didn't seem interested with addressing our concerns. He instead continued to raise his voice in front of the rest of the diners, with no regard to the issues we were trying to remedy on the spot. Without a massive overhaul of their entire staff, your experience here will not be a good one. It would truly be a shocker if this establishment was still in business by the time you read this review.
