    Now one might think that after 8 hours in the car the first stop would yield bliss....and it did. After 25+ years of heading to the Swans Island ferry i popped into this joint as an adult....and keep coming back since. The view from the screened porch is priceless for pre ocean visitors. Stick w the fish simply prepared.But don't forget to start w the bisque. Can't be skipped

    Absolutely the best meal I've had in a long time. The NE clam chowder fantastic. Now to The lobster stew. I would drive the 9 hours I drove to Maine just for that. PHENOMENAL!! The lobster fantastic. Mussels and clams FRESH. staff was extremely friendly. Loved every second. Remember....... LOBSTER STEW!!!!!

    As always, Union River continues to be the best place for Lobster if you like a proper sit-down restaurant. It is a nice large space, you don't feel crowded one you have been sat. That said - get here early for dinner, no later than 5:00 or so, or you will face a good wait. We chose to dine in the outdoor/screen room both visits. One night it was a bit chilly in there so bring a sweater just in case! The Gulf of Maine fried shrimp dinner: Loads of shrimp deep fried in a thick batter. It was a nice plate of shrimp but I would not recommend this because Maine shrimp are miniscule so it was like eating mostly batter. Too bad because Maine Shrimp are so tasty and tender. These little gems would be better suited to Scampi or Fra Diavolo. 1 1/4 lb Lobster. Lobster is like a box of chocolates, you never quite know what you will get! This one had a rock hard shell and was super-stuffed with tender tasty meat. The cracker they give you is the cheesy kind so don't struggle with it, ask your server for the deluxe model. The tail was quite tender so I definately enjoyed the meal. ( I usually don't order Lobster out. I don't like wrangling with my dinner especially when hungry and I like to steam them and have them sit and cool for a while.) My friend enjoyed the Fried Clam Plate one evening and the 10oz Rib Eye. All the dinners came with mini-loaves of bread, cole slaw. Salad or vegetable were slightly extra. We had no room for dessert, but made up for it at the B&B we stayed at with their fabulous breakfast brunch!

    This place was perfect. We were looking for a lobster pound, but wanted a sit down restaurant. We had to wait about 20 minutes. While we waited we went outside & chatted with the guy cooking the lobsters. He was super friendly, and told us all about the lobsters. We sat inside the screened area which was very nice - NO mosquitoes! It was dark when we went, but you could see the river. Very nice view! We started with steamers which were great. We both had lobster, and they were great as well. The bread they serve is delicious. For dessert we had blueberry pie which was fantastic. The service was excellent. Were from out of town, and if we're ever in the area again we will be back!

    I'm sorry to be giving this place such a low review, but having just had the best Clam chowder in the world at Cappy's in Camden, Maine and fish chowder for my dad, the fish chowder at this restaurant was mostly potato and not fish. I ordered the surf and turf 8 oz Filet of cow with lobster tail and my Filet was hardly tender at all. We told our waiter about our food and he didn't even bother to call the manager to come and talk to us. He simply told us that their food was "award winning" and sorry that we didn't like it. Their dinner bread was chewy with no crust. Seriously, I am driving up the East Coast of Maine with my dad and this is the first bad meal we've had, THANK YOU GOD! Oh, we're from Florida, so we know seafood! They should go to Cappy's and try their chowder maybe?

    Great food, great service. They were busy and now I know why. They take your cell # and text you when your table is ready. Very clever. Nice outdoor seating along the river - or watch the cook boil one lobster after the other in the outdoor pots. The lobster mac and cheese seemed like a small serving but with that, the salad and bread I was very satisfied. My husband had a 1 1/4 lb lobster dinner and said the meat was particularly sweet - very good. Highly recommend this spot!

    Excellent choice. The food was a perfect as the service. 2 people in our group had the two lbs of mussels & clams. (Both were very well received. They were very fresh & prepared to perfectly.). I had the lobster Mac & Cheese. It was very cheese & chalked full of lobster.

    Visited this restaurant on a recommendation of a local and boy was it worth it! Friendly and courteous from entry and continued through departure. Quick and efficient service from the waitress (Richelle). Food Was delicious (lobster Mac n cheese, chicken breast, sirloin, surf n turf, lobster). Definitely a clean place, with beautiful scenes outside the large windows. Also has screened-in outdoor seating. Would recommend and will return the next time we're up this way.

    It was crowded we waited outside for a little while sitting on plastic chairs and watching one of the cooks while we waited for 20 minutes for them to email us to come in and sit down. I ordered the swordfish with cilantro cream sauce with baked potato and glazed carrots plus I got the fish chowder. The chowder in a bread came out almost immediately and was very tasty, my main meal arrived within minutes after finishing the chowder it was wonderful probably one of the best swordfish I have had, The price was very reasonable, we did not have desert and the bill came right away with no waiting the place was totally packed. I have not been to this area before but this is where I want to go back to.

    If you are a vegan DO NOT GO HERE!!! They have great food and a great atmosphere. It is situated in a very scenic part of Ellsworth on the River. I went here with my parents and family while on holiday because it is one of my parents favorite restaurants in the area, I am a vegan and the menu selection for me was limited to a baked potato because they were not willing to be even slightly accommodating to my dietary needs by even making the fresh vegetables without butter.

    good: lazy man lobster with wine and butter. if your a wildlife fan, there are osprey by the river bad: chewy lobster, must be overcooked. over 40 min wait, not worth the wait. ugly: mosquito hell core, plus did not help that had to wait 40 min and let the bugs feast on me. came home with bites on my check and eyelids

    If you're looking to treat yourself to some delicious food then make sure to check this place out. Like many places around here, you can watch 'em choose and cook your lobster right outside of the entrance. It arrives like this delicious package of tender meat, just waiting to be torn open and slathered in drawn butter. That's the deal here and they do it extremely well -- just ask the lady at the table next to us that put down a 3lb lobster like nobody's business. Started with the hot artichoke and crab dip as an appetizer which was super delicious. Followed that with a 1.25lb lobster, which was a great size for the Mrs. They bring you a bib, a pair of metal crackers, and a bowl for the shell -- and then the fun begins. Have everyone else stand back as you tear into the poor crustacean. We also had a plate of fried full-belly clams that were amazing. A few grains of sand here and there, but otherwise deliciously cooked and the plate was stacked high with 'em. Mix that with superbly fried french fries [not those crappy steak fries] and you've got everything you could possibly need. Couldn't pass up the summer berry pie for dessert -- it was a light and fresh ending to an otherwise delicious meal.

    My husband and I both got the downeast seafood dinner. He got the fish chowder and I got the clam chowder. First of all, it is a lot of food and nobody would be able to finish it all in one sitting. The chowders were tasty. Not much vegetables but good tasting broth and seafood, which is all you can ask for. You can choose your lobster size for an up charge. The lobsters were perfectly cooked along with the mussels and clams. Their homemade bread was nothing to write home about, but their coleslaw and fries were pretty good. Not that we had any room in our stomachs for them! The staff was very friendly even though they were super busy. Their cocktails were nice and strong as well. You can get fresh seafood just about anywhere in maine but this place puts their kitchen right next to the parking lot so that you can see and speak with the guy who is cooking your lobster. He is more than willing to chew the fat with you and answer and touristy questions about lobsters you may have, which sets it apart from your average lobster pound. My only regret is not having time to come back again.

    May not be as cheep as done of the places on the high way but it's a must to go restaurant. Staff are very friendly. Food is great and the best part is the outside seats by the lake after you finish eating. I went twice and had the same thing which was a meal that had thier bread, clam chowder, colslow, lobster sitting on top of steamed muscles and clams with cup of butter and cup of the broth. I bookmarked it and will definitely go back and recommended it.

    Its rare that I try new restaurants in Downeast Maine, since we have our old favorites and its impossible to visit all of them in a 1 or 2 week visit. However, this year we were looking for somewhere to stop on the way home from the Bangor airport, and since we don't have a go-to restaurant in Ellsworth, we decided to give this place a try. My fiance, mom and I all enjoyed our meals and I felt that it was reasonably priced, given the proximity to a resort area. I was trying to eat lightly, so I had the salmon special (around $18, as I recall), which was very good. It wasn't anything especially innovative but it was cooked well and had a great flavor. My fiance really enjoyed his lobster roll ($16) and my mom also liked her lobster pie ($24) very well, although it was not a pot pie with a crust as we expected and was more of a lobster saute topped with bread crumbs. I heard the bread was delicious as well. Service was very friendly and prompt. The portions were also pretty good-sized. There were some wonderful sounding desserts, including homemade blueberry pie, but we were all too full for dessert. This will definitely be a place we'll come back to when looking for a restaurant in Ellsworth. The food is very tasty & satisfying, just don't expect much of a price-break as compared to Bar Harbor.

    We were satisfied, but not sold. Food is good and a reasonable value, but we don't go out of our way to eat there. Even though we live less than a mile away, we typically drive into Bar Harbor instead.

    My wife and I shared a 4 lb lobster. We really enjoyed our dinner at the union river lobster pot. The service was excellent and the lobster was perfectly cooked. I would recommend Union river lobster pot to anyone!

    So a friend of mine said he went to a lobster restaurant, that was not in Bar Harbor, where he had the best fish ever. Only problem was he couldn't remember the name. I think after 6 days in Bar Harbor I finally found it. Nice place with great service. Did I say great service? Maybe best ever. Very informative and polite service people and they all work together to make it a wonderful experience. The food? Very good. We had oysters on the half shell, halibut, and steamers. Everything was very fresh and the provencal sauce was a good complement. Blueberry pie was "the best ever" Vegetables were okay. Good experience.

    My wife and I have spent our summer vacation week near Ellsworth regularly over the past few years. Typically we'd go into Ellsworth once to pick up supplies and once for Cleonice and otherwise stay the hell away (there are loads of beautiful areas a short drive from Ellsworth but it is itself not generally an appealing place). On our last visit, we decided to poke around downtown a little more, and hey! we discovered this seafood restaurant. It turned out to be a surprisingly good find, too. We were easily seated, which apparently is not typical judging from other reviews. We arrived very close to opening time - with no particular intent to beat the crowds, it's just that we were starving after a long drive and wanted to shove lobster in our pieholes ASAP - which may have been a factor. We're in our 40's and were the youngest people there by a good 30 years. The atmospere is that of a basic, simple restaurant; it's not fancy but it definitely isn't just a lobster shack. There is a lot of indoor and screened seating with a great view of the nearby lawn and river. Service was friendly. We're in our early 40's and were the youngest people there by a good 30 years, but no one seemed to mind the tourist whippersnappers stopping in. For appetizers we shared a smoked salmon plate and some lobster stew. I loved that their salmon plate featured the outstanding Grindstone Neck fish from up the road toward the Schoodic Peninsula (we stop in at Grindstone to load up every time we are up that way), a local product transformed with garnishes but still highlighting the fish. The lobster stew was excellent. We both got lobster rolls as our main course. Overall, these were flavorful and good, though we've had better. We found the meat just slightly underdone (we can't stand overcooked lobster and like it leaning to the low side of done, and we still found this jigglier than we prefer) and the amount of mayo dressing to be a little thick and overpowering. We tend to like lobster rolls minimally dressed to let the flavor of the meat come through. No complaints about the quality of the lobsters, though. These were crazy fresh critters. We finished with a very nice piece of blueberry pie. If you're seeking out one place to have a truly flawless lobster roll in the area and don't mind driving out of your way for the premium experience, head further down toward Acadia and hit Beal's or Trenton Bridge. But if you're near Ellsworth and want a pleasant dining experience, a great view and solid food, and don't feel like going way out of your way, Union River is a good option. Note that the restaurant is seasonal! Don't be dropping by in mid-February and acting surprised that no one is there, like some bozo reviewer who gave them one star because he didn't bother to look at their website ahead of time.

    Stick with the oysters and whole lobsters and you'll be fine. Great service and excellent drinks. Loved the sight of the boiling pots as you enter. We heard you could watch the ospreys hunting as you ate, but we were too late in the season for them.

    2nd year in a row that we have come here. Very good food and the price is not bad. For $30 I had a 1.5 lb lobster with clams and mussels, clam chowder, cole slaw and fries. Arrived around 7 pm and was told there would be a 20 minute wait and got seated after 10 minutes. Nice setting indoors. Friendly staff and very good food. Desserts are delicious as well!

    The chowder is great never had a bad meal! I did not care for the famous blueberry pie. I really wanted to but it was kind of paste like , not horrible but just not my thing.

    Food just okay, comfortable restaurant, excellent wait staff. Fried clams very good, though a bit lacking in earthy clam flavor. Lobster soup very good, with flavorful juices and no thickeners. Lobster pie was a big disappointment: portion was meager, and instead of a pie crust, the lobster was just oven-baked with some bread crumbs on top - resulting in the lobster being overcooked. Salads were standard. The blueberry pie was awful. It was blueberry season, yet this filling tasted canned, and it was over-sweetened and thickened to the point of gumminess. The crust was not good: it was too thick, and tasted like a commercial product. The seating was so nice and comfortable, though. The staff were all very professional and pleasant. Beer and wine by the glass were reasonable and there were good selections. Pricing was fair enough. I would not return except maybe to have a beer and plate of fried clams.

    After a great kayak trip along the union river we stopped here for dinner. What a great find from the pleasant wait staff to the meal itself, very good. The ribs and lobster tail were outstanding, ribs falling off the bone. We will return.

    This was the first night we had lobster on our Maine vacay, so we were super excited! There is a really long wait, they give you a buzzer, but there is a really pretty creek out back so it wasn't too bad. They also have a cool lobster boiling station out front with live lobsters in huge vats - great for kids and pictures. As an appetizer we got the artichoke dip, which was not very good, too much potato and too little artichoke :(. we got the Downeast Dinner which came with the new england clam chowder (watery and not good), fries (did not touch this as there was so much food! also, it wasn't that good), mussel and clam steamers (very very good), and lobster (yummy!). on a side note the bread did not look fresh and was hard! we didn't touch the bread at all! overall, i think i prefer dining at a lobster "shack" to a restaurant, it's quicker, cheaper for better quality food and a more authentic experience! Try the Trenton Bridge Lobster Pond - we LOVED that place (Union River was about $50/pp vs. $35/pp at Trenton)

    I'm not sure that Flo T. ate at the same restaurant I did just the other night. We arrived around 6 and had a short wait which, as she said, was easy even with a 2 yr old as we watched lobsters and played out by the river. Once seated, the service was fast and the courses excellent. Fresh baked bread, sweet and warm, was served first with my fresh summer salad. My wife had the amazing lobster stew. She let me have a bite of lobster, there were quite a few, but she didn't want to share :) I ordered the Margarita Chicken, which had a perfect combo of ingredients to create a tangy taste with a good mix of grilled summer veggies. The cilantro/sour cream sauce was a perfect compliment to the tender chicken. A surprising garnish of lightly pickled cucumber made for a tasty side dish. My wife had the broiled scallops. She described them as "melted in my mouth... fresh and flavorful, with just the right amount of butter and breadcrumbs, and nothing else to spoil the fresh flavor." Others at the table raved about the seafood salad (shrimp, lobster and crabmeat - too much to finish) and the salmon salad (again, leftover salmon). The staff was pleasant and engaging even with our two year old. The owner came out during the meal to check on us and explained about his local ingredients (most things come from within 50 miles.) Overall a great food and family experience!

    Wonderful. Everything. From the fresh baked bread to the perfectly delicately fried haddock. Perfectly steamed veggies, cold blueberry iced tea. Our server was so polite and quick. They support each other on the floor along with bus crew to ensure great service for all tables. No room left after dinner, so I ordered blueberry cinnamon pie to go....it didn't take long to dive in and declare its the "best ever." I wish I lived closer, but will definitely be back. Advise to go at "off hour" before dinner rush/wait if possible.

    went on a Sunday night around 8pm with my family and we ordered a ton of different things to try. baked scallops were good. nothing too special, just in butter and they were the large diver scallops. my father had the fried seafood platter with scallops, clams, and shrimp and it was what you would expect it to be. stemed clams app was a really good size and they had the cornmeal bellies so they were good. priced really reasonably. my sister and i split the lobster & seafood casserole and it was AMAZING. soooo good. wish it had more crab and less shimp but still really good. We split the chocolate cake after and it was super rich with a lot of frosting. We ended up taking home more than half the food as they are huge servings and they give you bread before hand. Some items are a tad expensive but for how fresh everything was and good it was def. worth it.

    my husband and i stayed in Surrey for 1 week and ate here 3 times. it was amazing. i got the lobster dinner every time, i couldn't help myself. he got the ribs w/ lobster and the salmon and both were delicious. the clam chowder was excellent as was the lobster stew. and the blueberry pie? i do not like fruit pie and i took a slice back to michigan w/ me. it made it in the car for about an hour. suffice to say all 3 times there were fantastic for us, we have nothing bad to say about the place. after eating at a really awful restaurant we decided to stick w/ this one and thank goodness we did!

    Great seafood, always fresh. Dont go for turf, youll be disappointed. Esp the bbq ribs. Its Right off the main road at the bottom of the hill (by the Union River lol). so alittle hard to find if you're from out of town. FYI, they are now officially closed for the season.
