This place was a real let down. I only came here because my friend was part of an open mic night, to which I might add that having an open mic night at Jose's Grill is perhaps the most bizarre venue that could ever be chosen. Ambiance wise, this place feels like an abandoned Sizzler. Yes, this is a Latin restaurant in a predominately Hispanic neighborhood, but basically no English is spoken here, which makes communicating really hard. Thankfully my friend spoke Spanish because otherwise we would have been lost. Most of the food coming out didn't look amazing, so we just order a few appetizers for the comedy show. The quesadilla came out cold with browning guacamole. The saltenas were actually pretty decent. Water is only bottled and costs $3 - what? You won't find this on the menu, but sodas get no refills - double what? And, they overcharged us on the bill. Again, had it not been for having a Spanish speaking friend we would have been out of luck because it took a lot of back-and-forth in Spanish to get the bill corrected. The comedy was pitiful. At first I was annoyed that one of the waitresses was loudly talking/laughing with the handful of Hispanic customers, making the show hard to hear, but after the first couple comedians, I was hoping she'd get even louder to drown out all the bad jokes. Maybe I was there on an off-night, but most of the comedians built their acts around 5th grade-style genitalia jokes. I think I heard the n-word and f-word about 100 times. Plus, there were many derogatory jokes about the Spanish-speaking staff at the restaurant and how they have "overtaken" the neighborhood. Not cool.

Open. Good for walker or wheelchair. Waitress only spoke Spanish, but worked hard. On Groupon who knows who a customer would be so knowing no English is bad. Service was kind of slow. Food was cold or smoking hot, very very underseasoned [Latin food is usually so seasoned] & meal was dry but cut of meat was a good one & vegetables were FRESH. Prices were very fair. Place was clean & ambience enjoyable.

My brother-in-law is one of the hosts for comedy night on Fridays. The comedians are spectacular and the atmosphere is nice enough. We had a table full of some adults and some teens. We only ordered 5 alcoholic drinks and the rest were 2 ice teas, 2 cokes and 2 bottled waters, unbeknownst to us they charged us for each refill. I've never been anywhere in this country that charged for refills. Our waitress didn't specify this policy because, as the other reviews have indicated, she only spoke Spanish. Our bill came to $68 and when I tried to refute it with my Spanish speaking friend they refused to reduce our bill. I felt ripped off. I gave this place 2 stars but only because the open mic comedy night is fantastic! The place gets a big fat zero for ripping off the Gringos!

I would not have found this place if not for Groupon. Review: I was hungry (very hungry) so I ordered a saltena, Milanesa Completa (breaded chicken, mashed potatoes and fried egg), chicken quesadilla, and garlic shrimp. The food was excellent, all of it. The saltena had an olive in it - yum! The Milanesa Completa was solid and mashed potatoes were real (not from a box) and soft (no lumps). The eggs were completed cooked through. The garlic shrimp was heavy on the butter and heavier on the garlic - that's the way I like it (some may not) and was mixed with tomatoes. The chicken quesadilla was a normal chicken quesadilla - no surprises. There was also a side salad that was included and bread. Cost: $37 (without groupon) which I found to be very reasonable for the amount of food that I ordered. Service: Food was ready when I arrived (took about 35 mins from phone call to pick up). I got take out so I could gorge privately. No service issues. Note: This is a small mom and pop shop. They are very nice. This restaurant caters to spanish speaking people as the waitress only speaks Spanish. There is a person in the back that processed the Groupon (the waitress could not) who speaks English. Free parking in front of the restaurant and metered parking on the side. This is a great little place in Wheaton and I will be back!

This is a great little place. If you are looking for really delicious fajitas and friendly service, I highly recommend it. Also, the beef saltenas are amazing. The waitresses do not speak a lot of English, so sometimes the manager has to come over to help with translation, but it's not a problem. The place is neat and clean. There are a few tears in some seat cushions, but the place is far from dumpy. They play nice music and the restaurant has an authentic feel. Ownership and staff try really hard and you can tell they take a lot of pride in their establishment. I highly recommend Jose's Grill for some dependable no-frills Mexican food and good service. Prices exceptionally reasonable!

Disclaimer: found this place through Groupon. 2 stars is actually pretty generous on my part and review is primarily about service. Environment: located on the same strip where MoCo liquor store is. Next to Nut Pizza. Parking is limited at the front but there are more spaces on the side and back (metered). Inside is clean, decor is ok. Food: Ordered the salmon and fajita mix. Their menu is hard to read because the background and the words are the same color ... I highly suggest you review their menu online. Food is edible, good seasoning on it but quality is poor for the price you pay. Chipotle serves better guacamole. Trust me. Salmon was $16 and Fajita mix $18. I am better off going to Chili's at that price point. Service: I understand this is a Hispanic restaurant and I do not expect anybody to speak "perfect" English BUT there are certain ENGLISH WORDS that a server IN THE USA MUST know, such as water and check. When we entered the restaurant, it was completely empty, I told our server / hostess 'table for two', holding up the universal hand signal # two. She clearly did not understand because she started speaking in Spanish, so my husband stepped in and spoke to her in Spanish. Strike one. When it was ready for us to order, I said 'ginger ale' and 'water' ... she started to speak in Spanish again. Strike two. Husband ended up ordering everything in Spanish. Came back with my ginger ale and husband's glass of water. Husband had to tell her to get me water, in Spanish. Isn't it automatic that you serve water? Or am I just spoiled? Strike three. If my husband did not speak Spanish, I would not be in this restaurant to begin with because not only our server does not speak / understand a lick of common English, she also doesn't understand hand signals. Thank you Groupon for saving me $$, I would've been pissed if I paid full price to eat in this restaurant.

This place is the worst. Be prepared to pay for everything; normally establishments can offer water [in a glass maybe] at the very least. No, it's bottled and $3 a pop. I could understand if it was a food truck. They also tried to gouge more money out of us on questionable charges; $5 margaritas all night, 4 Margaritas amounts to $38.00-right? My best advice go somewhere else. Mi Rancho, La Brasa, El Patio, Uncle Julio's even. Not here!

Five stars: - Friendly service - Cozy, intimate atmosphere - Love the chicken & plantains - Tango nights on Tuesday evenings I've always been a big advocate of family-owned establishments and this is certainly one to give a try.

We were very curious about this place, they advertise themselves as a "Fine International Cuisine". The website is very nice, but in reality it was a disappointment, here the reasons; Appetizer, Saltenas were just ok, I'm not a big fan so I let that go, but the Calamari was awful over cooked the first time we sent it back and not fully cooked the second time, they looked like onion rings from a kid's menu, we were afraid to order Entrees (there was 7 in our table) but we order Lomo Saltado, just 2 orders of that to see what happens, it was an average Lomo Saltado nothing fancy or extraordinary just ok. Our services was very slow and as the food below average, no water (they give us a pitcher 45 minutes later and fail to refill), no bread (the other server was bringing baskets of bread constantly to the other table next to us) our server end it up dancing more than 3 times with some guy in the dance floor, no wonder why the place was empty on a Friday night (Just 4 tables; a party of 14, another party of 7, us.. And then some couples disperse around the dark place) it was Karaoke night and the selection as the quality of the food and service was poor. Beware! You must be Latin to kind of care about this Fine Dining Restaurant?? We won't come back, you're free to give it a try but you will be throwing your money to some disorganized patron.

I'm gonna go ahead and review this place despite the fact that it took me over an hour to get here from Alexandria due to massive traffic on 495 (at 8:30pm!) and I ended up arriving only half an hour before closing time. Being Bolivian myself, I had planned on visiting Jose's for some time since I often get updates from the owner via Facebook. I figured it might be a good place to bring my mom who is visiting from California over the holidays. I'm not going to be too harsh on this review since my friend and I were pretty much the last guests on a Tuesday night and the restaurant was understandably empty. I am going to start by saying that I was kind of disappointed with the location: it sits right next to a liquor store in the corner of a strip mall. As my friend and I got out of the car, some drunk guy in front of the liquor store yelled out something that ended in "baby". We walked extremely fast into the restaurant and were very relieved to see that he didn't follow us in. Once inside, as I mentioned before, it was just us and another couple, although the owner and his friends were seated having some drinks at a bar, in a style very keeping with Bolivian traditions. The decor was minimal but pretty, with a few pictures of Bolivian landscapes along the walls. Once our waitress (the only waitress in the restaurant at that time) came up to our table, the first thing I ordered was a Pacena, a Bolivian beer which I love. My friend got a glass of wine. Wine lovers beware: The wine list is nonexistent, just three choices: rose, white, red. No bread to start our meal either, which was too bad since we were starving after our long commute to MD. Then again, it might be because we were so late... so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt on this one. Vegetarians also beware: No veggie options here either. I knew this from looking at the menu online so I wasn't surprised. I ordered the cucumber carrot salad ($5) and a side of fried plantains. I made up the fact that I couldn't eat any of the food by offering my friend a few suggestions on the things I used to love when I lived in La Paz and before I stopped eating meat. I was happy to find that most Bolivian staples were present in the menu, including saltenas and pique a lo macho. She ended up opting for the Silpancho, or thin breaded steak topped with a sunny side up egg and accompanied by steak fries and rice. It turned out to be a pretty solid dish and she managed to barely make a dent before she was too full to go on. At $12 it seemed to us like a good value, it also had a very authentic look. But being full meant no dessert for us, so I can't review that either. I really want to give Jose's Grill another chance, but again, the long drive is somewhat discouraging. From what I saw, this place looks promising. The menu is legitimately Bolivian and very complete (unless you're vegetarian of course), and from what I can tell from all the events such as the Caribbean and Karaoke nights on weekends, probably a lot more fun on a better night. There may be an update coming. If I can convince someone else to venture to Wheaton with me. Volunteers?

Believe the bad reviews! I came here for the comedy night. First of all, the happy hour is literally an hour (from 7-8). The waitress did not speak one word of English. When I ordered a margarita and a Jack and Coke, she went behind the bar and came back with a pen and paper, trying to ask me to write down what I wanted. The manager came over and I repeated my order to her, which she understood. The margarita was strong, but not because of the tequila. Heavy on the mix. The other drink for my boyfriend was OK. When the manager delivered our drinks and I told her I wouldn't be doing a tab, she told me my drinks would total $12. When I got the tab, it was $14. "Happy hour" for the margarita was supposed to be $5, which would make my other drink $9?! I mean, I know we're close to DC, but not worth it. Didn't get any food, but honestly I wouldn't have wasted my time ordering it.

It's a bit hard to give this place a star rating. I liked it significantly better than a number of places I've given 3 stars to, but certainly not as much as the places I've given 4 to. But I can't give it 3 1/2. Today I decided I wanted to go somewhere different, that I haven't been to over and over. But I didn't want to go anywhere far from Wheaton, and I didn't want to spend a lot. This place has $7.95 lunch specials advertised, and it was close by, so it was my pick. The specials are not on the menu, so you have to ask someone. And the waitress knew of only one thing available on the special, but after I had decided to sit down she suddenly came up with another. That was part of what I did not like about the place -- any place with daily, changeable specials ought to have the staff know what they all are. I had beef ribs, with rice and plantains. Everything tasted good enough, but the meat was tough and hard to chew. The portion size looked small, but when I actually ate it, it was adequate; I'm not complaining about that. Obviously, I was happy about some aspects of the meal, unhappy about others, and this is why the rather mediocre rating. A lot of Hispanics were there; usually having a lot of the ethnic group which the restaurant represents is a good sign, but this was Wheaton, after all, with a large Hispanic population in general, so I cannot say whether this is a sign of authenticity or not. It probably is.

Owners: please get a drink menu and train your bartenders! You have a full bar, but apparently can only make straight shots. The liquor store down the street can do that. A good drink menu will help immensely! On to my review: I came here on a Friday night and there was some DJ broadcasting on a live radio. Waaaaay too loud for a restaurant. I had to lean over the bar to tell the bartender my order. I came here for a drink as part of a friend's birthday, but the only menu is the food menu with a couple of beers and wines listed on the dessert page. So, I asked the bartender if they have any drink specials (I something harder than wine and there was a full bar so they obviously should be able to make something). She said she was new and didn't know, so she went to ask a fellow employee. A couple of minutes later, she came back and said something about Bacardi but I couldn't hear her over the obnoxiously loud music. I don't blame her for not knowing. I blame the restaurant for not having a drink menu. I probably won't be back anytime soon, at least not on a Friday night with this DJ and without a properly utilized bar. The one extra star is because my bartender was so friendly, despite being new and barely able to hear me. She genuinely seems friendly and I appreciate that.
