As others have said, the chicken is well-seasoned and tasty. The sauces are good with, but not a necessity. The plantain side was underripe and kind of hard, but it didn't stop my husband from getting an extra order to go. We prefer the plantains at Pollo Amigo, though. The anticucho corazon (beef heart skewer) was by itself underseasoned. However, it comes with the same green and yellow sauces that the chicken does. It worked, but whether you're happy with this solution depends on if you're okay with slathering your food in rich sauces, or prefer them being an option. It came with giant corn (not a fan, though I've also never had that kind of super-starchy corn cooked in a way that I found particularly appetizing) and potatoes. Honestly, I would've preferred just the meat without the sides. It's a minimum $6 purchase to use your credit card. It's set up like a mini-cafeteria, so there's more space to sit comfortably than at Pollo Amigo.

Still hasn't disappointed me... I think I'm addicted. Yesterday My roommate and I got the Super Special, a whole chicken (fresh out the oven)with 8 sauces, 3 large sides, and your choice of a 2 liter or 4 cans of soda all for $25 !!!! The meal was enough to feed us twice, could be enough for 4 people or 8 children easy ! We told them to cut the white meat piece a little smaller and they were happy to do it. I think they are starting to remember my face which is a little embarrassing lol

This is a gem to find in an otherwise blah shopping area. They offer Peruvian food but the chicken is so good I haven't tried anything else. The plantains and the brown rice are my fav sides, I love green beans and they aren't bad here but they taste canned (prefer non canned) Great option if you want take out or not on the mood to have a longer sit down dinner.

I like peruvian chicken. I can eat it everyday and be happy for the rest of my life :). EGP is just ok. I have eaten there several times and it's hit or miss. Sometimes their chicken is cold, other times it's undercooked, a few times it still had that raw, disgusting chicken taste. But when they get it right, the chicken is good and well-seasoned. I think that's just the nature of peruvian chicken, it's tasty. But EGP is not among the best in terms of that particular peruvian taste. I haven't been in a few months for those reasons. But their sauces are really good, and complement the chicken well. I have not sworn off this place completely, but I am not excited (nor in a rush) to go back.

What? No more pupusas? I dock them a star because that seems like a crime.

YUM! I like chicken again! Just get up and go to El Gran Pollo! I got turned on to Peruvian chicken by some friends down in Silver Spring, and now it's generally the only chicken I will order when eating out. I am so glad EGP opened up near me. The fried Yucca and the rice and beans are great with the chicken (no matter how you get it). Get a whole chicken to nibble on for the weekend. You just can't go wrong.

Excellent chicken. Perfectly seasoned and moist. They have good sides as well. I love their rice as it has lil bit of chicken in it.

Great food, Fresh ingredients, good quality meat, great service. My go-to chicken spot. The lomo saltado is my favorite dish. Huge portion. It could easily be 2 meals. The pupusas are awesome too. The best is the mixed one.

This place has some of the best chicken I have ever eaten. The sides are good, not great. I usually go for rice, pinto beans, zucchini, green beans, and yucca fries. Thats not all for me. I get a whole chicken and a number of sides for my whole family and it is always under $30. The one down side is that there is a woman who works there that has an absolutely terrible attitude. They would be smart to get rid of her because I have seen people walk out before ordering because of her nastiness. I am a regular and don't even get treated well by her. If it doesn't change I don't even know if I will be able to continue to patronize their business despite how wonderful their food is.

I just moved out to Baltimore, and was craving some Peruvian chicken. I searched and found this gem on Yelp, and decided to give it a try. I was a little worried that I wouldn't find quality Peruvian food in Baltimore. I come from San Francisco, and have had a good share of delicious Peruvian cuisine, whether it's rotisserie chicken from Limon, or tapas-style cuisine from La Mar or Piqueos. That's why I am ecstatic in having found El Gran Pollo. The place has many positives working in its favor. First, is its LOCATION. It's conveniently located in a strip mall with plentiful parking and little traffic on the corner of Loch Raven and Taylor. This works very well for me since I live in the area. Most important is the FOOD. They have a fine offering of traditional Peruvian eats (e.g. rotisserie chicken, yuca, platanos, black beans), and some non-traditional foods that I would expect to find in a Mexican taqueria (burritos). I have always gone for the rotisserie chicken, and boy is it delicious. The chicken is moist and comes marinated in what I can only describe as Peruvian goodness (probably a mix of lemon or lime, herbs, spices). You have several options to order chicken (1/4 dark or white, 1/2 dark or white, or whole). Chicken orders include 2 sides, and you have an assortment to choose from (fried yuca, green beans, mixed vegetables, black beans, potatoes, pinto beans). Platanos are also available for 50 cents more. The last 2 times I've gone there, I ordered a half chicken with 2 sides, and that was enough to last me 2 meals. That leads to my second positive about the food here, and that's PORTION SIZE. The portions of chicken are hefty. They sure don't skimp on the chicken, and like I said, a 1/2 order is enough to last you 2 meals unless you're very hungry. My final positive about this place is COST. A 1/4 order of chicken with 2 sides runs you about $6.95 plus tax. A 1/2 order is $9.95 plus tax. That is very reasonable in my opinion, and gives you a lot of bang for your buck. The staff there are also very friendly, and I even met the owner in my first time there. He was very outgoing and excited that I moved here from California. This will definitely be a regular eating spot for me.

The quality/price ratio is huge at this place. I got the half-chicken meal and got mounds of green beans and black beans to go with it. Everything was delicious.

Never disappointed when I come here! I've only ever had the chicken and it is always moist, juicy, tender, and seasoned to perfection. I usually get plantains and black beans; simple but delicious meal and for less than $10 for half a chicken and two generous sides you can't beat it. I'll eventually try other things on the menu but the chicken is just so good!

I saw this place as I was walking out of Grande Buffet Grill and decided to get something here. I got their 1/4 Chicken, dark meat, with the huge corn and rice & beans. Went to work, tried it and it was good! The meat was very tender and flavorful and the sides complemented the chicken well. It's a small place that's located right next to Grande Buffet Grill and have some friendly people working there. Good food!

First of all the service is great, but the food is phenomenally delicious!!! I've only had the chicken and the sides so I can only review that! The chicken is cooked in this rotisserie oven which is heated by a charcoal fire. The chicken alone is "slap your momma good"!! The season of the food is very authentic; you don't need to add anything on the chicken. They give you this green sauce which comes mild or spicy and it is a must have for the yuca and sometimes I put it on my chicken. I haven't been in a while and the taste and service is just how I remembered...finger licking good and now I'm probably going to end my night curled up in the corner of my queen size bed knocked out! If you've never had the el gran pollo experience you need to be there tomorrow during business hours and get on it! There are other items to choose from, I just always go for the best seller.....the chicken!

A few days after my first review, I bought lunch for my co-workers from EGP and this time made better choices. The chicken was amazing just like before as were the plantains. I swapped out the Yucca for black beans which were delicious, especially with a littlke green sauce dripped in for extra flavor. Now I can't wait to go back and try some other menu items.

I picked up dinner for my family from here one night after work and it was sooooooo good!!! We got one whole chicken and it was so juicy and flavorful. We got the fried rice which was on point and then we got black beans and pinto beans and they were both delicious. The green sauce they give you is also to die for. It's just the right amount of spicy and added a kick to everything we added it to even though you don't even really need it.

The chicken is great here. And the prices are wonderful. I was looking for somewhere on my side of town for a place like this. I normally visit Chicken Rico in downtown Baltimore. But this place is my new favorite spot.

I love the chicken, grilled shrimp and I had a mixed seafood dish with rice too. Great price and you can feed a family for under $25.

This chicken is to die for. Heavily seasoned but not too spicy. Crispy skin, expertly prepared--truly authentic Pervuian chicken. I love both of the sauces that accompany the chicken, as well as the rice and veggies. Highly recommend!

I think I've tried most of the Peruvian chicken places in Maryland and I think this is the best (Sardis in Montgomery county was my previous favorite). We usually go to Pollo Amigo but I think this is much better. Anyway, we decided to try El Gran Pollo and I am so happy we did. We got the special for $18 - a whole chicken, sauces, 3 sodas and 2 sides. We also added fries. The chicken was perfect - juicy & spicy and done perfectly. I love the green and yellow sauce combo on mine and their sauces were delicious. We had the black beans - good but not great, they needed the green sauce added in & the plantains - heavenly!!! Easily the best plantains I've had bc they were caramelized perfectly. The fries were good too. I will definitely be back very soon. Great food at a great price! (I'm not totally sure this is Towson but you should go!!!!)

Best of the Peruvian chicken places in Baltimore. Tasty tender chicken. Little cups of mild and hot garlic sauce make it even better. The sides are very good, especially the plantains which are served in the caramelized-sweet style

The chicken here is outstanding! OUTSTANDING!! It's moist and seasoned perfectly. So so good!! And the two sauces (yellow sauce and green sauce) they have that go with it...delicious!!! I love the chicken here so much, I dream about is some times. I think I'm going to go out and get some more right now. Mmm! So good! Definitely try this place out. (Also, my Peruvian friends state that it's the best Peruvian chicken place in the area. If they think so, I'm doubly convinced!!)

The food here is very good, borderline great...HOWEVER, customer service REALLY needs improvement. Over the last four weeks, I've arrived at the restaurant well before the posted closing time, only to find then closed. After the last occasion, I decided to call them in order to express my concerns about them closing before the posted closing time. During my conversation with the owner, he stated, "I'm the owner and I can whatever I want!" Very true statement...however, if you want to build a clientele, I would STRONGLY suggest you are more considerate of your patrons and honor your posted hours.

Excellent charbroiled chicken. Well cooked, flavors throughout. Also had the fried plantains- as both sides! The only reason why I give it four stars is because it was slightly cold and not made fresh. But I will take the leftovers home and enjoy them cold again!

The food is always wicked good but I DREAD calling in phone orders. I have had someone tell me that they won't take my order over the phone because I can just come in and order it (???) and just now I tried to call in a large order for the Ravens game tomorrow and the first person who answered couldn't understand my plain English so she put someone else on the phone who told me to call back tomorrow to place my order. The whole point in calling ahead is because I know I will be too busy getting the house ready for company and I will have a small window to actually make the call. If they can't handle a Family Special order being placed a day ahead of time, I would really have to question the catering side of their business.

Came by El Gran Pollo last weekend and was pleasantly surprised. Food was tasty and prices were good. $15 bought 1 whole chicken, 2 sides, and 2 canned sodas. (I'd prefer to get a dollar off or so and skip the sodas because I don't drink soda, but whatever.) The chicken was moist and flavorful. One spicy and one creamy sauce were offered, but they weren't necessary. The fried plantains were excelllent. They were sweet and mushy, but also had some crispy caramelized goodness on the edges. The green beans were fine, maybe a little over-salted and overcooked, but not bad. I asked for an order of rice pudding, but they were all out. Oh well, I'll try it next time. El Gran Pollo was actually pretty spacious and nice on the inside. It's the kind of place where I'd prefer takeout, but eating there would be fine too. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

This place is not managed by a peruvian. If u are peruvian you will be completed dissapointed. Cold chicken, french fries fried twice .... Terrible tamal! Arroz chaufa really disgusting.

The boy and I went here based on other Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed! Service was quick and friendly, and the food (chicken, plaintains, rice) was yummy in our tummy. Many other patrons seemed to thoroughly enjoy their meals and a lot of customers did carry-out for dinner. We will definitely be back to try out the different steak entrees too.

I've been frequenting this place in there opened few years ago. Hands down the Peruvian food in Baltimore county. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. My favorite is the Lomo saltado... Get it, you won't be disappointed.

Not as good as Chicken Rico in the city, but it was ok. The sauce was thin and there was no discernible difference between the green and yellow. The chicken was too salty and otherwise lacking flavor. It was less plump and juicy than Chicken Rico, but still tasty. I wouldn't kick it out of bed, but it wasn't my favorite. The fried yucca was exceptional however and the plaintains were just right.

This has got to be one of the best Peruvian chicken spots I've ever had...especially in the Baltimore area! This place was recommended by a friend and I finally was able to go there but I got there 20 minutes until closing on a Sunday. I was definitely worried that: 1. they would run out of chicken, and 2. the chicken would be dry from sitting out all day. However, I was extremely pleased that I was completely wrong. The chicken was hot, juicy, and full of flavor! Could not have been more pleased. A side of the fried plantains is a must! What I ordered...1/4 white, side of fried plantains, fried yucca, a salad, and an horchata. All less than $12. Cannot be beat!!

The chicken was very moist, and seasoned well. It was very good, and you get a good portion. I got the chicken, and rice and black beans. The rice, and beans I could eat by themselves. I crave the chicken and rice all the time. Definitely worth every penny.

They are hands down the best Peruvian in the Baltimore area. The staff is really friendly and we eat there at least 3-4 times a month since it is so cheap and delish! I want to make sure they are profitable and aren't forced to close down with this economy so bring your friends and spread the word. My only critique is their black beans aren't very good and the chicken can occasionally be over salted but either way it has still been very good. Everything else on their menu is great. If you can try the Mondongo DO IT! If you get yucca (our favorite) make sure it is nice and hot. It is an all around great place to get some good eats for cheap.

  • Terry B.

maybe it was me or maybe i just caught them on a off day but i wasn't that impressed. the plantains were dry and looked like they had been sitting for a while. Food is a little pricey but thats to be expected since there aren't a lot of peruvian spots in towson. the chicken was pretty good, moist and flavorful.

I almost want to rate this place 5 stars, but I have only been once so far.... But it was excellent, could not detect a difference between it & Chicken Rico. Other that the chicken, plantains & fires, I had a spinach pupasa. It was delicious. The restaurant is clean, open 7 days a week, I can get there much quicker than Highlandtown. The service seemed a bit confused, but, hey - that is hardly a reason to bat an eye when you are talking about Peruvian chicken.... What a great find!

Just stumbled across this place the other day. I've become a lover of Peruvian chicken so I had to give it a try. Great news is that's it is really good. I put it up there with Chicken Rico. The chicken is done very well. Moist and flavorful. I initially thought I liked chicken rico's better but the more I ate it the more I enjoyed El Gran Pollo's better. Chicken Rico's tends to be a little more greasy and over seasoned. El gran pollo's chicken is a bit milder on the spices which means you can really taste the chicken. As far as sides go, I've had the plantains, black beans, mixed black beans & white rice, and the chicken fried rice. All of them are very good and they give you really large portions which is great. Lastly, I've become an aji verde addict, i.e. the spicy green sauce they give you with the meal. I'm happy to say that El Gran Pollo's version is awesome. Spicy and delicious. Just the right amount of heat with lots of flavor. The perfect sauce for great chicken. Or anything for that matter. I've professed my love of it to them and they now toss a couple of extra in for me which is cool. Prices are very reasonable as well. If you're a fan of Peruvian chicken I highly recommend giving it a try.

We normally go to Chicken Rico, but when a coworker told me there was a Peruvian chicken spot in Towson, I was beyond excited. The chicken was moist and flavorful, the plantains were delicious and so were the beans and rice. All of the sides looked fresh, unlike Chicken Rico. The vegetable medley was excellent, and wasn't too salty. I will definitely visit this place on a weekly basis.
