Not sure what happened here. I hope someone see this from the restaurant. Gen Tso Chicken is suppose to be a spicy chicken dish, the last 2 times I have had it here it tasted like a ketchup sauce. There were no hot red peppers. Mr Chan, time to step up your game.

Ordered carry out there for the first time two days ago. I ordered the Pad Thai noodles with shrimp, chicken wonton soup and two spring rolls. All were very good with one exception...the Pad Thai noodle dish had mushrooms, red peppers and snow peas in it. I am accustomed to Pad Thai noodles absent of each of those ingredients but instead, with sprouts and cilantro. The soup and spring roll were both very good. In addition, the shrimp were jumbo and they did not skimp on the portion. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the meal which I shared with my 20 yr old son. I will return and dine in on my next visit. And since I love Pad Thai noodles, I will just ask them to omit the ingredients that I didn't care for and ask that they just add the two that were missing. I am sure that they won't object. Lastly, as for the friendliness...the gentlemen standing at the counter who took my order was extremely pleasant. I suppose it can be a very different story when you dine in. I'll report back after my dine-in experience.

Coming from nyc, this food is mediocre at best. We ordered deluxe fried rice (beef, chicken and shrimp) and orange chicken. The Orange Chicken is real white Meat and was tasty ...i liked that but it was awfully dry, it needed more gravy. The rice was ok it could use more flavor...it was nothing to write home about.

Great food and service, wonderful sushi menu. Loved the lemon salmon roll. Very good and flavorful, hasn't been in years. I'll be back in the future to have just sushi, it was that good. Give this place a try especially if you like sushi!

Thank you, Yelp for helping us find this place. Nothing to look at, but kid and vegetarian friendly. Lunch was fast and more than filling at $23 for three people.

Quality Chinese food. They use real chicken breast, food is always seasoned well, quick service. Best in the area.

A full 50% of the entire menu is vegetarian, and a full 100% of what I ate was delicious. Further, the waitress was one of the sweetest servers I've had in a while. Though, she was a size 00...she could certainly afford to eat some of Mr. Chan's food. Someone needs to feed that girl - she looked hungry! Anyway, the lunch special (served until 3pm) came with a bowl of vegetarian won ton soup and a big, fat vegetarian egg roll...both were amazing. I tried the orange yuba, a version of tofu, and it was very orange chicken-like, and extremely good. The waitress also brought us a hot pot of complimentary tea. The entire meal was under $7 per person before tip. I'll be back again and again and again.

Service was wonderful the food was wonderful and the atmosphere was wonderful. The food came out perfect the drinks could've been a little bit stronger. It was a great value for the price!!

I have been a long time customer of Mr Chans but that all changed to night when I visited for dinner. I am a vegetarian and love the orange yuba how ever on this occasion the food was inedible. The entree was over cooked and dry and the orange sauce was a gluey disgusting mess that was dumped on top of the yuba. The entree was barely warm . I told the waitress that the meal was inedible and she began arguing with me telling me there was nothing wrong. After several moments she angrily took my plate and went back to the kitchen. I flagged the manager down to let him know my disappointment in the dish and the waitress . He was also rude and told me how it was very busy when my order was cooked. I calmly told him this was not acceptable and as a long time vegetarian customer I am very disappointed in the meal and the service. it is sad that new management has no clue how to treat their customers and this customer will not be returning

Not sure where the 5-star reviewers ate, but it must have been a different restaurant. Just moved to Pikesville area and was looking for some good Chinese nearby. The reviews on here sent me to Mr. Chan. Walked in to pick up carry out order and was warmly and enthusiastically greeted - had a very good feeling about this place. Thought it a bit unusual on the drive home that there were no aromas filling the car.. Got home. Opened containers. Food looked .. different. Shrimp with black bean sauce was an unappetizing gray color and didn't have the wonderful pungent Chinese black bean smell (nor did I see any of them). "Extra spicy" Orange Chicken was that scary day-glo red you see in really bad Sweet and Sour carry out. Neither dish was bad. In all fairness, the vegetables were perfectly cooked. However, both were bland, bland, bland. Any suggestions for good Chinese near Mt. Washington/Pikesville?

If u have picky eaters the kids will love the chicken fried rice. Great vegetarian options as well.

I learned about this place from friends who live in Pikesville. Completely vegetarian friendly restaurant. Unlike many other Chinese places, there were two whole pages of vegetarian entrees - which isn't too surprising considering the location, but extremely appreciated by myself and the two vegetarians from out of town who live in a vegetarian waste-land. There are multiple vegetarian protein options - TVP, tofu, yuba (tofu skins), and seitan. Everything was delicious. This is not authentic Chinese food - though the sauce on the "ribs" I got tasted exactly like the real ribs my parents used to order in real Chinese places - so don't go in expecting anything but Americanized food. But still very tasty.

There is something very special about the peaceful atmosphere in Mr. Chan's. Aside from the amazingly budget-loving lunch special, priced at no more than $7 for a complete meal, the ambiance is almost zen-like. I had the Chicken in Orange sauce, and although its a common take-out dish it would put others to shame. Fresh ingredients, a great crisp to the breaded chicken, and a very tangy, mildly spicy sauce all compliment the vegetable fried rice that accompanies it. The wonton soup and crispy fried noodle appetizers leave you happily full, and in all the meal was extremely satisfying. I've been coming here for years, and its definitely a restaurant that you'd keep in rotation for lunch!

I love this place! They have good food and the best prices. I especially like the vegetarian alternatives on the menu. I live nearby,so it is hard for me to stay away. The workers and owners are very friendly and courteous. I would recomend this as a dine-in experience for anyone who is hungry.

I've eaten at a lot of Chinese restaurants in Baltimore. I generally order Peeking Duck, fried brown rice, and a chicken with cashews or general tso. My go-to Spots are Sonny Lee and Jumbo Seafood and sometimes Ding How in Lutherville. Today I decided to try Mr. Chan, I was horribly disappointed. I've been meaning to try it for years because of the high reviews on Yelp, I can assure you I will never go back. My buddy, fiancé, and I each got a miso soup- low flavor, and they didn't even serve it with miso spoons. I got a half a peeking duck- worst duck I had ever had in my life. The sauce was putrid. The duck was over cooked, perhaps re-cooked. The pancakes were thick and they didn't even serve with scallions. Fried brown rice- it was the best thing we ate which isn't saying much. It lacked flavor like everything so I lathered the rice with chili sauce which helped. The chicken and cashews used decent ingredients but lacked flavor. This was a horrible chinese experience!

I found this place very delicious! I had Paneng Tofu, which is my standard dish I get at almost all restaurants that have it. It was comparable to some of the best I've tried. The crab rangoons were really good as well, and they put mushroom in the (vegetarian) egg rolls which I though worked great! The staff was also extremely courteous and was fast to bring everything out! Well done!

Oh, Mr. Chan, how I love thee. Let me count the ways. 1. Mass Quantities of Fresh, Quality Ingredients 2. Great value for my money 3. A huge variety of faux meat options 4. Free food with my food 5. Brown rice on the menu 5. An Asian restaurant that actually serves TASTY desserts 6. You are always on point with your take-out time estimates 7. Tons of soups 8. SALADS!! 9. Mad Flavor 10. You take requests and are willing to experiment with an already beautiful array of menu options. A final word: Sure, on approach, it looks like your average C-grade hole in the wall. But, remember, looks can be deceiving. It is a hidden gem of epicurean delights! Ask for the faux General Tso. It's not on the menu, but they'll make it. HEAVENLY!

We went here for eat in and it was still great. Service was good, although it was pretty empty (we were there on a weeknight), so if it hadn't been, I would be harsher in my star rating. Although the decor is pretty lacking in this place, the menu choices are substantial for both meat eaters and veggies alike. They serve a sweet and sour tasting kimchi when you first arrive, it's amazing and I wish I had asked for more of it! We ordered: Panang Yuba - Good but not nearly as saucy as I like it to be. You can order more sauce on the side, but I wasn't aware of that until I was halfway through my meal, so that's a good tip for next time. Grilled Yuba Salad - Comes with a peanut sauce. It's a pretty simple salad, made up of a ton of grilled yuba on top of, what looks to be, a bag of mixed greens dumped into a bowl. It also comes with a peanut dressing. I wasn't a big fan of the dressing and felt like if could have been improved slightly, but it basically tasted like little more than melted peanut butter to me. Veggie Ribs - these were SOOOO good. I would order them next time if I went back. They came as smaller pieces in a sweet sauce that wasn't overpowering or too syrupy. The menu I posted earlier doesn't contain nearly what they have on their on-site menu, so it's probably a good idea to go visit and ask if they have a to-go menu in case of future pick-up order needs.

Uggg... Just awful. They just changed owners and it is not good. Sushi was terrible. Daughter loved the orange at the end of the meal but adults felt it was unanimous......horrible. Mr chans- get it together or you will not make it. There are too many other choices in town

Started the meal with hot tea, which was wonderful. Tons of vegan options, so hard to decide! Sweet potato tempura sushi was amazing. All the food was great. Wish it wasn't so far away!

Interesting menu, very nice staff, good to very good food! Time hasn't been entirely kind to this Pikesville staple. My biggest complaint is that the restaurant smells a tad "stale." However, this is a MUST visit for vegetarians- the choices are limitless and inventive. I'd go elsewhere for most traditional Cantonese food,if you are a foodie though. I already recommended the vegan menu to friends!

First off let me say I have high standards because I'm Chinese and have traveled to Asia to eat some of the best Chinese/Indian/Japanese/Korean food. Also I'm from the DC metro area where there are many Chinese restaurants that blow the ones here out of the water. We went here for Saturday lunch and I ordered the lunch special which included hot and sour soup, a egg roll and shrimp with lobster sauce. We also ordered Shrimp toast as an appetizer. My Fiance ordered egg drop soup and sesame chicken. First off the egg roll was very tasty, filled with veggies and roast pork. The soups were terrible however with my hot and sour soup being extremely sour and barely edible. My fiance's egg drop soup just tasted off. The shrimp toast was incredibly oily. Now to the main entrees, my shrimp with lobster sauce was barely warm and the sauce congealed almost immediately. Barely any flavor and the rice was so hard and disgusting. My fiance's sesame chicken was all breading and barely any meat. Service was OK but for the price and the quality I was thoroughly disappointed. Two stars for the egg rolls.

Since I work near D.C., I've come to enjoy the variety of Vegan establishments the city has to offer which helps a new vegan out a lot. This led me to look down on Baltimore a bit even though a vegan can still live very comfortably and enjoy an assortment of options. With the help of yelp, the wife and I went decided to travel to Pikesville and checkout Mr. Chan. O' boy, the food is out of sight. The atmosphere is comfortable, prices great, portions filling, and service prompt. If you are a vegan or vegetarian, Mr. Chan should become a monthly destination. Plus they give you free food and hot tea. Wonderful!

Absolutely loved their Orange Chicken! I got it made with white meat. Normally when I order white meat from certain chinese places its never all white meat chicken breasts. Maybe I'm just really picky. Bottom line, good quality meat and the sauce was dilicious. You even get a free egg roll. I will definitely be going back for there for lunch soon.

If you are looking for good sushi place --- you'll find it here. Relaxing atmosphere, overall good service, as far, as I remember - the staff has not been changed for years. Delicious free appetizers - Kim Chi (spicy Korean cabbage), fried noodle with homemade souses, and of course the best tea. The only one thing you have to do --- look at your check by the end; seems that the waitresses don't know the math; sometimes they mistakenly charge you $10-15 more. But sushi is the touch of heaven. Love this place, and every time I'm in Baltimore, I have to visit them.

vegetarians take note!! their vegetarian options are yummy!! i agree about the appetizers, they provide you with crispy noodles, cabbage, tea...you could almost fill up on these before dinner. The service is great. My favorite is the mock chicken with cashew nuts. i rated it a 4 only because my meat-eating friend was not very impressed with the food.

For a Chinese American restaurant, Mr. Chan is not shabby. And for vegetarians and vegans, Mr. Chan is like heaven. They have dishes with veggies, tofu, tempeh, gluten (seitan), yuba, and healmey. I mean, what is yuba and healmey? Who knew there was all sorts of fancy schmancy mock meat options aside from tofu, tempeh, and gluten. I say, just enjoy these interesting new textures for what they are and don't think of them as a substitute for something else. Now that I'm starting to eat meat again, I am still equally keen to order up some healmey with shiitake over your average-Chinese-restaurant-ho-hum orange chicken. The service here is fantastic. Mr. Chan, or so I assume is the owner's name, was very cordial and obliged to the extra requests that I made.

First time there since the new owners took over, quite a step down. I got grilled salmon which was raw in the middle. Spouse got a panang curry that was so hot he could barely eat it-and he likes hot! Also now there is a TV in the dining area-when I told the manager that I didn't think it was nice to have a TV on for Saturday night dinner, he said -some people like to watch..... Not what I want for my saturday dinner out.

It was wonderful to have so many options for vegetarians, and the prices were great. I was there for lunch. I had yuba red curry and my friend had seitan (I forget what they call it) Panang curry. We each got a veggie roll and hot and sour soup. It was amazing and I can't wait to go back and try from their dinner menu, maybe try the veggie ribs or the hot pot.

  • Brad B.

lots of veggie options. I chose something off the regular menu -- chicken, shrimp & scallops in brown sauce with brown rice. Very good, enormous serving, everything very fresh. Also had a veggie eggroll, not worth ordering again. highlight was actually the vegetarian green tea custard dessert with berries (straw/blueberries). Excellent!

My boyfriend and I live around the corner from Mr. Chan's, and, being vegan, frequent this place weekly. The service is always great, the food is outstanding with large portions and decent prices, and their vegan chocolate mousse is a must for dessert. I haven't had their sushi, but everything on the vegan menu is wonderful - and they have a great selection.

The best carryout Chinese Restaurant we've found yet! If you haven't been yet you have to get their General Tso's, huge chunks of all white meat chicken in a delicious and not so heavy sauce. Haven't tried many of the vegetarian options but I hear they are delicious as well.

Since this is a schezuan restaurant, I decided to try the schezuan pork. While the flavor profile was good - the balance of meat and vegetables was wayy off! It was almost 75 percent vegetables and 25 percent meat. Was pretty disappointed!

  • Jonathan B.

Didn't know about the amazing Vegan options here until being in the area for a few years, I have been missing out! You can't go wrong with vegan Chinese food, it's horrible for your health, but tastes great! They have Tofu, Seitan, and even Tempeh and vegan Maki!

Food: Food is below average. Not much flavor. Plain. Service: Good. They try to make you happy. Atmosphere: Nice ambiance. Notes: They chow mien is actually steamed veggies, not lomien noodles. I order two order, then realized it was all veggies. They replaced the order without charge, which was nice of them. I wouldn't eat here again because of food quality and taste.

Three stars because the employees were very friendly and helpful, but the food itself was lacking. My office ordered lunch here a few days ago because of the convenient location and it combined the cravings for sushi and Chinese food that day we were ordering. Our order consisted of Beef n Broccoli, Beef n mixed veg, shrimp lo mein, orange chicken, a sushi platter, triple delight, soup, and shrimp toast, and it was just under $80. Whenever I try a new place, I use their orange chicken as my guage as to whether or not I would want to go back for other items later, which is what I did here. The sauce reminded me of what they use for sweet-n-sour, just with the peppers and orange peels mixed in. It was definitely sweet, and definitely red, but it didn't have that slighly spicy kick that I expected, and it was just kind of bland and boring. On the plus side, it was all white meat, but it was a bit overcooked and dry. Most everyone said their food was "okay," but I did not get a run-down from them on the details of what "okay" meant for them. I was told the triple delight was also lacking in flavor, and the fried rice was a bit hard and crunchy. I would say the sushi platter looked really good, and I was told it tasted good as well. It was a 9-piece mixed platter costing about $20. Long story short, I do not think I will be ordering here again.

I've been back several times after my good first experience. For the sake of being healthy, I've asked them not to bring me the fried wantons or the egg roll, and they've been happy to oblige. I've found that I especially like the Yuba with greenbeans, and the vegetarian wanton soup - they also bring brown rice by default, which is nice. I'm not sure if that's the case with the meat meals, since I haven't tried them. ------------------------- Update: I have tried some meat things at this point and I'm not impressed at all. While the vegetarian stuff exceeds expectations, the meat meal didn't. The fried rice, instead of brown steamed rice, was so oily the grains didn't stick together. There was some unseasoned steamed veggies, and the fish was somewhat over-breaded. I absolutely recommend this place, but ONLY for vegetarian food.

You know you are on the east coast when your meal starts with mustard sauce/ duck sauce and a bowl of fried wonton strips. Loved the Yuba options - had the salad and kale/brown rice - delicious and large portions. Husband had the fried seitan - he'e a big guy and had to bring more than half home - easily enough for three people to share on that dish. He also ordered the tempura sweetpotato maki - wasn't his favorite ever but Rolls n Bowls in Chicago has spoiled him - he said it was decent. Service was friendly and fast for a Saturday night at 8:30 pm - place was empty and quiet - my favorite getaway from the kids.

My mom and I just spent 16 dollars on lunch at Mr Chan Szechuan. Do you want to know what we got for 16 dollars? Okay, let's see... Hot tea for two Crispy wonton strips Wonton soup Vegetable egg roll 2 maki rolls Curry chicken with fried rice Fortune cookies Amazing! Mr Chan is definitely a hidden gem in Pikesville. Such a great value for lunch here! My vegetable egg roll was crispy, hot, and totally stuffed. Yum. I also really enjoyed my maki rolls. I ordered a sweet potato tempura roll and eel avocado roll. Both rolls were really tasty and fresh. Not the best or most creative sushi ever, but for about $4 per roll, you seriously cannot beat it. The curry chicken had a great flavor and was also cooked well. I'd definitely return!

I love this place! I was desperate to find a good Chinese restaurant, and after reading all the positive Yelp reviews I decided to give this place a try. I'm soooo glad I did! My boyfriend and I come here all the time now. The service is great, the food is fresh, the servings are big, and you get free unlimited hot tea, crunchies (I don't know their proper name) and this tasty sweet and sour cabbage. We are always stuffed after we come here, and we are always amazed at how much food we get for such a reasonable price. I personally haven't tried any of the vegetarian or vegan options, but I was impressed by the extensive list of options. The menus even include explanations of all the faux meat options (tofu, tempeh, yuba, etc). Some of the other reviews referenced the outdated décor, but they have recently updated the inside. If you're looking for a Chinese restaurant, definitely check this place out. You won't be disappointed!

How do you rate one of the best meals you've had all year? I'm vegan, usually asian food options for me are tofu versions of what they already have - or some over-fried mock meat version of the menu. What my friend and I had ordered was not only light, but delicious, not greasy, fresh, and absolutely left me feeling refreshed. I will be back...

Excellent food - especially enticing vegetarian options. This establishment takes great pride in their plethora of vegetarian/vegan selection, as they display the ingredients (soy protein, VTP, Yuba, etc) on every single table. Having tried many options, my favorites would be the Veggie Balls with vegetables and the Sun Dried Tomato Eggplant Sushi. The ambiance is pleasant, quiet, and unexpected as you walk in from a bustling Reisterstown Road. The staff is kind and honors large orders by providing complimentary fruit at the end. Undoubtedly one of the best options for Chinese food in the Pikesville area.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
