CAJUN CHICKEN, INDIAN TACO and WAFFLE-CHICKEN! DECOR: From the outside, you cannot make out that there is a restaurant behind the door. It actually looks like a garage or a storage unit. In fact the waiter told us that this place used to be a storage unit for some grocery store and the restaurant was a part of this store (as a take-away counter). The interior is strange. I don't mean that its dirty or untidy. Hard to describe, you have to form your own opinion :). At 12:30 pm, this place was totally empty. The neighborhood seems deserted too. FOOD: The food was undoubtedly tasty. We ordered the Cajun Chicken Pasta and the Indian Taco and both these items were very good. The proportion was good too. SERVICE: Excellent is what I have to admit. Initially we had ordered the Waffle and Chicken after reading it's reviews on Yelp. However though this is a Breakfast/Brunch item, it was not ready at 12:30 pm (that's the time we visited this restaurant). The waiter told us that the Chef inside was still preparing the batter, so they won't be able to serve us the Waffle-Chicken. The waiter was very polite and asked us to order alternate items. However, as we were about to check out, the waiter served us the Waffle-Chicken. He mentioned that it was a complimentary item from the Chef and insisted that we take it home. We found this very courteous and very nice of them. PRICE: Reasonable.

Best meal I have had in a long time. Top notch service. Very personal experience. Everyone was so pleasant and inviting. Each course was served with enough time to enjoy. We felt totally comfortable taking as much time as we wanted to. It was a true culinary experience. And I think it's BYOB?

We ordered several small plates including the jerk wings, chicken and waffle, Mac and crab rolls. Also the kids Mac and beignet desert. I loved the jerk chicken and kids Mac. The staff was friendly and it was clean and comfortable. The negatives: I didn't like the Mac and crab rolls. They ran out of Pepsi and forgot to take my 1/2 off appetizer coupon but, it was corrected.

I go to yelp reviews to find new and different places to try and most of the times it has yet to fail me until today. At 7:50 pm I went and ordered the shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles, 2 kids Mac and cheese and baked Mac and cheese and greens. I was told it will take 30 minutes so I left and came back 40 minutes later and my food was not done. At 9:20 pm my food was finally done! Irritated like crazy, the front end lady said sorry and that I had come at a bad time. Seriously? When is it a right time for a customer to do a take out? Almost 1.5 hours later from the time of the order to get my food! Utterly ridiculous! I have never waited this long at any restaurant for take out. Shrimp and grits: so tasteless! The grits had no taste and the texture was rubbery. The shrimp was big but that was about it and not anyway worth $20. Chicken and waffles: The waffles were so dry and they gave me such a small amount of syrup that it barely covered anything on my plate. I thought I would be getting actual chicken but throw few pieces of chicken strips on top. I was so disappointed as I was looking forward to eating some chicken and waffles. Kids Mac and cheese: Absolutely no flavor. They need to add salt or at least taste the food they serve out. My kids didn't want any of this Mac and cheese. What a waste of money and food. Greens: I wouldn't know since they told me at the last minute they ran out and gave us Mac and cheese instead. Baked Mac and cheese: Probably one of the better dish of the night although I had to add salt to it since this had little flavor but needed some salt to enhance the flavor. Overall, so disappointed.

Omgee! Wonderful dining experience!!! This place has made a major transformation from its carry out days. When you walk in, you get a coffee house vibe. We were immediately greeted with great conversation by the manager and co-owner. The food was phenomenal! We had the chili, farmers rolls, mahi-mahi, and apple pie mango rolls for dessert. Everything was seasoned and cooked to perfection. I can not wait to come back!

Just walked in one night. The vibe and atmosphere is very laid back..casual dress. The decor was unique and different but nice! The food...GREAT. I decided on catfish, mac and cheese, greens and the jerk chicken for the appetizer. I would recommend this place for a casual night out with friends or a date

Lovely place- open about 2 weeks. I got a steak with mashed root veggies and hubby got a burger with sweet potato fries. Their food is local, the beef is grass fed, and the vegetables are lovely. I like their philosophies and I am curious to see where they will go from here. A takeout place truly worth patronizing. There's a TON of stuff on the menu I want to try.

If I didn't have to actually write something in the review box I wouldn't because no words will ever truly describe this kind of greatness! Now I've had some pretty good fried chicken but NOTHING and I mean NOTHING will ever compare to these fried chicken strips! So I ordered the chicken and waffles and my one side of mac n cheese. The chicken was seasoned, breaded and made so perfectly juicy and hot, I almost started crying! The waffles I think were wheat? Not the biggest fan but they were still good. Not bad, just different. It makes you feel a tiny bit better inside knowing you're eating wheat waffles with your fried chicken, I guess. The mac n cheese was ok, I wanted them to be really cheesy but they were more buttery. And good thing I made my roommate get the potato salad because it was bangin! It had Old Bay and big chunks of potatoes... yum! It was a really awkward location, you have to walk into the convenient store and its straight to the back. They do have a table to sit down at and they have games for you to play while you wait for your food. It was fun playing Uno with my friends and another stranger waiting for her food. The chef also came out to talk to us and ask us how the food was, so nice! Definitely didn't expect that, it was a pleasant surprise. I have to go back to try everything else on the menu, I'm addicted!

I had super high hopes for this joint, especially after raving reviews from friends and family. Unfortunately, Herb & Soul missed the mark for me. The food was tasty-- very much so. Chicken and waffles appetizer was very good. The rosemary was a nice touch and the chicken was breaded lightly. But the portion was too small for the price. Same with the fried chicken dinner. It had crispy, but not overdone breading. Accompanying mac and cheese and collard greens were very good, but I just wasn't too full after the meal. My father was horrified because when he went a little while back, the chicken dinner had double the meat. He was very disappointed. I look forward to trying Herb & Soul again, but I hope they beef up the portions back to what they used to be. Otherwise, the price point is a bit off.

Finally tried eating at the restaurant, now that they've remodeled into a sit-down. OMG! The interior looks wonderful, the service is amazing, and the food is even better! This place is bound to be the next hot spot, especially since they have a stage, comfy and eclectic seating, and the best food ever. The Zeke's coffee with lunch was a bonus, for sure. My buddy and I ordered the Indian Tacos with lamb to split as an appetizer, then each had a farm burger, with applewood smoked bacon, and in a surprising twist an over-easy egg. I'm accustomed to hard-fried dried out yolk egg toppers from most places, but the over-easy made the burger even more juicy than it was! Our server made helpful suggestions, had excellent advice, and was the perfect balance of attentive and friendly. I really just can't say enough good things. Be prepared for a foodgasm. * Fry sauce is delicious - make sure to request it * Aioli that comes with Indian Taco is worth hanging onto for additional dipping throughout the meal.

The staff from Herb & Soul catered my wedding and I was absolutely thrilled with everything they did. First, Tonya was my contact person. She was very responsive to how I wanted the catering to run. Chef David also helped my figure out a comprehensive menu. I explained what I didn't want at the meal and he made fantastic suggestions on what to serve. They met us a few days prior to the wedding at the venue to figure out the best plan for setting up the buffet and both Tonya and David spent a lot of time making sure that all the details were worked out properly. The day of the wedding they were again super helpful. They even cut and served the cake (from a different baker) at no additional cost. They were at the venue for several hours to do set up, buffet, cake and cleanup. They really went above and beyond their responsibilities because they helped serve the cake and alcohol which were provided by outside vendors. Most importantly, the food was Ah-mazing. Everyone complimented my husband and I on our choices of food. Everyone seemed to be impressed because wedding food is generally sub-par and dry. In particular, everyone liked the boneless short ribs, the mixed root mash and the Cesar salad. These are all available on the dine-in menu. Yum. Also, they did it for a great price!

DO NOT LET THE OUTSIDE OF THE RESTURANT SCARE YOU! GO IN! I've eaten here many times and this restaurant is eclectic and down home all at the same time. The food is fantastic with a twist on everything. For brunch my wife had the chicken and sweet potato waffle with rosemary infused syrup - and the beignets are awesome. I had the Navajo tacos with lamb and it was messy -but delicious. I understand the menu changes seasonally which is nice and there is a small stage where a band plays on the weekends. Good place for a food adventure.

Have to say that this was an awesome meal. From the sweet biscuits to start to the pork belly appetizers to the fried chicken dinner. All were well seasoned, tasty, and perfectly made. What an inspiring find. A great soul food restaurant with character.

I live in the neighborhood and the wife and I have been meaning to check this place out for a while now. We went this saturday and have been kicking ourselves for waiting so long because it was a great experience. Everything we ate that night was fantastic. The sweet potato biscuits with maple butter were ridiculous. I ended up getting the chicken and waffles, mac and cheese, and sauteed zucchini squash. The wife got a fishermans' stew and blacked cajun pasta. For dessert we had the mixed berry cobbler. I can't say enough about how good everything tasted. You can tell everything is fresh and prepared with care in house. They obviously take a lot of pride in their food and it shows. Without a doubt, it's the best meal I've had out in a long time. Service was excellent as well. Servers and hostess were super nice and welcoming. If I had to dock them on anything it's that the first two entrees I ordered were sold out but it didn't matter because they had plenty to choose from. Can't wait to go back and try some of the other menu items.

Amazing soul food! I've stalked this place since it was carry-out only. All in all, I've ate most, if not, all of their menu. Frog-legs, mac and cheese, fried chicken, Indian tacos, greens, bread pudding...everything on their menus is wonderful!

My husband surprised me with dinner reservations at Herb & Soul for our anniversary. I had been wanting to check this place out for a while. I had heard nothing but good things about it. First impressions: when we first entered the restaurant, I instantly fell in love with Herb & Soul's eclectic décor. Everything about it says relaxed sophistication. The dining area is a big, open space, the tables & chairs are arranged in such a way to create little intimate settings throughout. Now on to the food... We ordered from the Prix Fixe menu. There were too many excellent selections to choose from! For appetizers my husband ordered the farm roll (Herb & Soul's take on a spring roll) and I ordered the chicken & sweet potato waffles. The farm roll was fresh & flavorful. My chicken & waffles were perfection. I never knew a sweet potato waffle could be so light & airy! For our entrées we had the fried chicken & catfish dinners with two sides. There was so much food that we knew we would be unable to eat it all. Their portions are very generous. I had two large pieces of catfish, and couldn't finish one! The mac & cheese was soul food at its finest...rich and cheesy! As for the Liberian geeens I'm not a fan of vinegar, but that didn't stop me from enjoying them. Somehow the vinegar added dimension to the flavor. It's hard to describe. To top off a wonderful dining experience, the chef came to our table to wish us a happy anniversary. Our night couldn't have been more perfect. I am in love with Herb & Soul! It's will be in my rotation of favorite restaurants.

Our third visit to Herb and Soul and we were not disappointed. The wait staff remembered us and could not be more friendly. We almost feel like family. The menu selections offer something for just about every taste, all freshly prepared and to order. This adds a little more prep time but is worth it. The three of us decided to go with the 3 course selections, our friend with the lamb chops (which I had on our last visit), my wife with the shrimp and grits, and I had the bacon wrapped pork loin. The rolls our server started us with were just outstanding and I think I could have made a meal of just them. We ordered the 3 offered appetizers so we could sample them all. We couldn't decide on a favorite, they were all so good. The main courses came out beautifully presented and absolutely perfectly prepared. Kudos to the chef. The only downside was the entertainment got a little loud at times. Just enough to make conversation a bit difficult. All in all I would recommend at least trying Herb and Soul for a leisurely dinner. We will certainly be going back.

Went here on date night with my husband and I'm sooooo glad we decided to try this place out! Great flavor combinations and some unique dishes you can't get most places. Everything was high quality and you can tell that the chef and the staff genuinely care about the food and your dining experience. Our server Adam was polite, knowledgeable, and attentive and definitely helped to win us over. The entire staff was helpful and courteous. Not to mention how flipping delicious the good was! I can without a doubt say that Herb & Soul is one of our new favorite places; we will definitely be back!

I liked the mellow vibe. Food was a little hit-or-miss. The farmer's roll was great. The paella and beet salad were good. The dessert was a little burnt. The service was really good. Parking can be a little tricky if it's busy.

This place had quickly become our favorite takeout even in light of the location and distance being over 20 minutes drive each way. Indian fish tacos are by far our favorite menu item there, and the baked goods are very good as well. HOWEVER, recently it was brought to our attention from several friends & coworkers who frequently ordered there in the past that Herb & Soul had recently raised prices on almost all menu items and in some cases the prices even DOUBLED. Most of us thought the price point was already a little high but continued giving them business due to good ingredients & creative menu items. After reviewing the recently updated menu I understand why so many have now taken Herb & Soul off of their list. Apparently they are trying to turn it into a dine-in restaurant, and even trying to draw people in by offering live entertainment some evenings. For one that is not the kind of restaurant I would choose for a sit down dinner. One of the things we liked most is that it was exclusively take out with a creative upscale menu. That's what set them apart and brought us there to begin with. The recent changes are really unfortunate because I was hoping this place would do well and continue where they were but unfortunately Herb & Soul is now off our list as well.

Important tip..If it is not clear, this is a takeout place with a counter in the convenience/liquor store. Especially busy on Friday evenings, order ahead or you'll have a long wait. Food is a solid 3.5, better than most but not quite refined to a restaurant grade. I bump it to 4 because service is astoundingly friendly. The chicken waffle appetizer is perfectly portioned and I am a big eater. Waffles were soft and tasty, if I have a minor gripe, it would have been better if it was a little crispier, but these are the best waffles around town. Chicken was tender juicy breast meat strips, with perfect amount of batter. Once again appropriate size for a $5 appetizer. Indian tacos were essentially 2 mini tostada salads with divinely seasoned ground lamb and the dressing is delicious thousand islandesque sauce. All I can say is "Yum!" Shrimp po boy was good. Shrimp were the best battered fried shrimps I have had around here. Perfectly battered and seasoned just right. If I have a small gripe, the bread was a little hard and the slaw could have been creamier. The remoulade was great. Overall, this is an impressive joint that is in a strange location. Most suburbanites will have an overwhelming urge to turn away the closer you get to the place, but resist the urge because you may be a stone throw away from some of the best modernized soul food to be had.

Okay so I've been meaning to come to this place at my friend's suggestion for year now. I finally made the trek up from VA... WELL worth it! I'm a HUGE fan of chicken and waffles and for the most part if it's on your menu I will order it! The sweet potato waffle was like a slice of spice cake but light airy and crisp all at once. The food was VERY fresh which makes it even better. I will work up the courage to make the drive once more for the summer when I'm sure the menu will change some with the local selections. Saturday there was a band and they were good too!

I wanted to give three stars but I could not bring myself to do that because of the food. This was my second time going here and I did pick up. This is where I almost took off extra stars... it took an hour! I used the online ordering and I got a prompt telling me 10-20 minutes for my order to be ready. I was in the restaurant in about 15 minutes and they had not received the order. The order came in 10-15 minutes later and everything took about 30 minutes to cook. The front end staff is inexperienced and I don't think they knew what to do because they did not keep me informed on the situation. They would not even look at me while I waited patiently in a very comfortable chair. I do not mind waiting for good food and this place has that. I had the fry-bread tacos and my wife had the pork belly sliders. Both of these dishes are 5 star dishes. I will most certainly be back and I hope they fix the timing on the online ordering (if I was told one hour I would given 5 stars) and I hope the front end servers are still learning and will know to keep the customers informed of good or bad situations. If these problems are fixed I will change this review to 5 stars.

Absolute best place for soul food. It's a warm hole-in the wall spot and I haven't been disappointed yet by anything on the menu. You can tell the staff genuinely likes working here and the chefs are AMAZING. Comfort food so good the food practically hugs you.

Yaaaaay! I love love love Herb & Soul. It's a little off the beaten path but so worth it. They start you off with the most delicious sweet potato batter biscuit. It might sound crazy but it's wonderful. When I think sweet potatoes, I'm thinking candied "yams" (yummmmy yams), and I've never cared for sweet potato fries or tots. But that sweet potato biscuit is one of God's gifts to humans. Another gift from God is definitely the chicken and sweet potato waffle small plate. It was magnificent! And pleaseeeeeee try the herb soul rolls. It is a delicious bunch of soul food wrapped up in an egg roll. Btw- I'm drooling right now. The entrees were great as well. I had the butter poached shrimp which was delicious! It was six or seven big juicy buttery shrimps over something I unfortunately forgot the name of. (Yikes!) My boyfriend had the shrimp and grits which he described as very flavorful and spicy! And on top of the wonderful food, we were lucky enough to have live entertainment from an extremely talented songstress. :) Couldn't have been more perfect!!

I made reservations for Herb and Soul on their Comedy Night for a date and we had a great experience. The food was delicious, atmosphere was great, and we really enjoyed the entertainment. The event was BYOB and they even gave us chilled glasses for our beer which we loved. The restaurant looks very nice and I like the open and inviting atmosphere. Most of all the service was great. I made our reservation at 7:30 but my date was going to be late because of his work schedule. I called ahead the the front manager glad pushed back our reservation and made sure we had a table which was great. We both loved the sweet potato biscuits, they were hot soft and fluffy just like biscuits should be. We share our food and there was more than enough for both of us to be full. We had the mac and cheese crab rolls which were different but definitely delicious. They had the right amount of crab and the mac and cheese wasn't overwhelming the entire appetizer. Then we had the shrimp and grits as well as a side of the root vegetable mash and those were also delicious. There was enough of the main entree that we didn't have any trouble sharing and we both loved the sweet potato in the vegetable mash. The grits were cooked perfectly and the little kick in the entire dish was awesome. The comedians were very entertaining and we both really enjoyed the show. The stage was a great venue and we had a great line of sight from where we were sitting. We had such a great night and I know we'll definitely be visiting again.

Interesting location, a place gone to by a recommendation...I am glad we were told about this place and hope you try it too. The outside is a lacking in curb appeal which I think gives it character. Once you enter the front door, you enter a whole new, warm, and friendly atmosphere. We were greeted by a smile and a welcoming hello, you felt like they were waiting for you to arrive. I was surprised to see it empty at first but the crowd was coming as we were leaving. The food was farm to table with a southern flare. Of course the chicken and waffles were amazing. I want to come back just for that dish alone! Of the two "suppers", I chose the winner, butter poached shrimp, but be warned, the shrimp still had the heads on. Thankfully, I was pre warned. It was great, my only complaint...I wish there were a few more shrimp bc it was so good. Everything we tasted was great and the service was attentive, friendly and knowledgable. I am looking forward to my next meal at herb n soul!

5 Stars, easy. This place is a little off the beaten path (on a small side street off of Loch Raven near the intersection of Joppa) but is well worth the visit. Easy to get to and parking is ample. Just got back from having lunch here with a co-worker and I highly recommend you check it out if you get a chance. As the name indicates, there is some soul food on the menu, but there is a good mix of options for all types of eaters, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free otpions, all of which are clearly marked on the menu. The main draw here is they source locally as much as possible, with grass fed beef and organic produce, and the prices are excellent all things considered. I had the black bean and smoked lentil 'burger' and my date had a cheesesteak. Both were excellent and came with a heaping portion of house made, handcut fries. My black bean burger was interestingly seasoned, and in spite of the fact that it practically fell apart while I was eating it, it was still delicious. I can say that the service was great - casual but still professional, but I'd be willing to bet on a busier day (we were one of two tables in the whole place) that it has the potential to be slow. But hey, it's a southern restaurant after all, right? Looking forward to making it back here for dinner one day - can't say enough good things so far.

I won't say that the other reviews were dead wrong. I will just say that maybe we ordered at a very, very, very bad time. Yesterday (2-7-13), the office tried to order for lunch. We were told that they had a big order in front of us, and to call back after 1:00 pm. We didn't like that, but we agreed. When we called back at 1:20, we were told to call back after 2:00 pm. Then, we called back and were then told that there was no chef and they were not taking orders. A restaurant with no chef? Isn't that like a hospital with no doctors? STILL, we decided that we were excited about the reviews and menu items, and to give them another try today. We ordered the blue catfish dinners. The catfish was very good! BUT, the greens (the brownish-reds?), were FULL OF VINEGAR, SUGAR, AND OIL. Not only that, they were OLD and OVERCOOKED. There is no way that those greens were fresh. The mac & cheese was OLD, GREASY, and I was served what was obviously scraped off the bottom of the pan. Dried out, falling apart, and hard noodles. It wasn't just bad...it was UNACCEPTABLE. If this was in my own refrigerator, I would throw it away! I would never consider serving that to anyone. It was almost like we were being insulted; like we didn't know the difference between good and bad food. It was like they were daring us to say something about it. It was like they didn't CARE. The sweet potato biscuits? Let's talk about those. Tasted great, but crumbled apart in our hands. Not that I got the one I even ordered; they forgot mine. I had a sample from my co-worker's order. I wanted to try a snickerdoodle cupcake, but was told that I need to let them know 2-3 days in advance. Um...NOPE. I can Google a recipe and make my own in that time frame. I'm really only writing this review because I want the owners to be more consistent. It would be a shame to see this business fail because of such poor customer service and business practices. If they keep serving food like the meal I paid almost $15 for today, they'll be out of business before Summer.

I was excited that the dude got a Groupon for one appetizer (three options), two entrees (three options), and one dessert. But, was bummed that it was for delivery or carry out. We almost forgot about the dang thing.... until one night when we found ourselves in the house with and empty fridge, and two dollars short for a large pizza. Chicken and waffles, pork loin, short ribs, and bread pudding sounded darn good. They were out of the pork loin, so I ordered another short rib entree, and added on a BLT with cheese for good measure. So, I placed the order at 8:46 on a Saturday night. It was delivered at 9:15. All things considered, the food was quite good. IMHO ,takeout food is never as good as it is when dining in. The BLT was served on golden brown Texas toast with hand cut fries. The rib was tender and served on a bed of buttery, smashed yellow potatoes with a side of greens. The bread pudding was delightful, and made me glad that I had a bit of ice cream left in the freezer. I don't think that I've ever been so happy that we decided to stay home and order in. We made a pact not to eat at the same restaurant twice in 2013 (fast food excluded). But, the next time we're able to get out for a bite, Herb & Soul is where we'll conveniently end up if I am driving. **Insert evil laugh here**

We had a Groupon for this place that we used just before Christmas, during the hectic season when we were out running errands, and needed a quick carryout dinner. Let me just say that this is no ordinary carryout. Sure, the location is super quirky and a little bit ghetto, but who can blame them? Better that they rent a small space, build a reputation for great food and a nest egg to move onto bigger and better locations, then to do what many others have done, which is to rent WAY too expensive of a space and then go under before they even get going because they can't afford it. I admire these guys for thinking small and aiming big but taking baby steps to get there. So, let's talk about what really matters...the food and the service. The food? AH-mazing. What other carryout do you know where you are going to get crab mac & cheese eggrolls? Or Indian tacos so good that they make your head spin? Or short ribs that simply melt in your mouth? We were lucky enough to not only have the Groupon, but to also hit up a Friday night, when the apps are half price, which is a heck of a deal. We had the aforementioned Indian tacos, crab mac & cheese egg rolls, frog legs & fried pickles, along with an order of short ribs, and an order of fried chicken. Plus, dessert of a cupcake and an apple pie egg roll. All of it was great, and even packaged with care for the transport home. And every single bite cemented the fact that we would be back again and again. As we stood and waited for our food, we chitchatted with one of the owners, Brandon, and he couldn't have been nicer. We talked about all kinds of local foods and suppliers, and were impressed by his knowledge and commitment to farm to table cuisine. We wish Brandon and David (who waved hello as he cooked up our delicious meal) the best of luck, and you all have fans for life in us, regardless of where or how far you go.

What can I say about herb and soul...hmm...let's start with the pros. The owner and servers are extremely out going and friendly. Cute decor. The owner informed us that every friday and saturday they have some sort of entertainment. I like the urban/neo soul feel of the place. Okay now for the cons- EXPENSIVE! There were three of us - we ordered the chicken and waffles, mac n cheese and shrimp and grits. The chicken was decent, nothing spectacular and the waffles were ok. The waffles are sweet potato and rosemary waffles. We did not like the shrimp and grits. The shrimp are cooked are huge (not a bad thing), but are cooked with a TON of over-powering spices. The mac n cheese was decent. There are many menu options to choose from. I think this place would be a cute first date night. The food we had wasn't great, but it also wasn't bad. Would I go back? Maybe...

I love this place! There is a location near the intersection of loch raven blvd and joppa rd within Loch Raven Convenience. I have only tried this food once but since hen I've been pining to go back like a little kid. I had the fried catfish with mac and cheese and collards (oh, and sweet potato fries). The catfish was perfect: seasoned and cooked perfectly, flaky mmmmm. The collards were second best, and I was impressed that they flavored them with turkey instead of ham. I don't eat red meat and so it was nice that I was able to have the collards. The sweet potato fries were a little bland and not very crisp because I ordered take out (anytime you put hot fries in a container they will get soft), but I'm thinking they would have been good if I had ate them there and added a bit of salt. I do like, though that they let the customer control the salt level on their food. (No need to spoon-feed us high cholesterol and heart attacks!) Secondly, I mean...come on...It's morally conscious TAKE OUT food! This is the first time I have ever heard of a farm-to-table TAKE OUT place! SOOOO freaking awesome! And it's not like it's fancy take out or anything, this is some down home country soul food and you can eat it with a happy conscience that the beef is grass fed, the chickens are cage free, and that there are no artificial processed meats or hormones in your food! Have I died and gone to food heaven? ;-)

Best. Mac & Cheese. Ever. This is real home cooked food. Like "mom n' nem's" home cooked food. Everything is made from scratch and the menu is ridiculously diverse. It took me like 15 minutes just to decide what to eat. I ordered the short ribs and they are DIVINE. I initially decided to try this spot because of an awesome Groupon deal that I found, however, after trying it out... groupon or not... I will be a regular at Herb & Soul from here on out! They hit the nail on the head. Real food. Real flavors. Real prices. Real good!! I love it!!!

I will definitely be back. I was very impressed with the thoughtful menu (supports local farmers, artisans, etc, sustainable sources, in season items) and the food was delish. I left very satisfied after enjoying their crab and mac appetizer and vegetable pave. The vegetable pave was cooked to perfection and had incredible flavor. I am happy to support a locally owned business with great food that believes in supporting their community. Compliments to the chef!

Herb and soul...you've got my business for life my friends! Let's just say I am impressed. I stumbled across this spot 3 months ago when they first opened and I was shocked at the quality and freshness of the food considering what was then a rather drab interior. While the spot is still located inside a convenient store in towson you can tell they've made considerable changes...I LOVE the fact that they give you the option of watching tv, reading magazines or my personal favorite playing UNO (which btw I am the champion!). Its odd little quirks like that you really don't find at stuffy places which is why I love dive spots like this. On to the food, the first time I came here I got the chicken and waffles which were ridiculously good. I also got there half and half (we don't have them in dc) which tasted out of this world good. You know its fresh just by tasting it. On my second go round I went ham! I came there with 2 friends all the way from washington dc! Top that lol! I ordered the catfish po boy, shrimp and grits, and I also had the lamb indian taco. Yes, I am a fat boy and proud of it! Read my finger tips...I have never had something so delicious in my entire life. The catfish was fried to perfection, crispy on the outside yet moist and flavorful on the inside. Whatever that pink sauce is my friends you need to consider bottling it and selling it in stores. That right there brung all the different elements of the sandwich together. I loved the pickle which had a spicy taste to it along with your fries. I should make a note to anyone reading this that these folks actually hand cut the fries which I appreciate as a consumer. It shows these folks aren't your average carry out. Onto the shrimp and grits. I've had this dish up north in quite a few spots and can name on two fingers how many of them actually got it right. You my friend are on that list. The grits were silky smooth and not laden with greasy cheese which I appreciate. The shrimp were blackened and layered on top of the grits. The two came together well. I was shocked that I actually got another side with the dish. The red cabbage looked so pretty and its taste was divine. You "Indian" taco was really really good. Where did you guys come up with this concept? I really like the way you married all the ingredients together. And that bread it comes is straight up SILLY GOOD. At some places *cough*chipotle*cough the toppings make the taco, not here and that's not a bad thing. The spice and flavor profile of that taco wrap is absolutely amazing and I say this as a guy who's done a lot of traveling in the southwest and west. I really hope you guys do well so that you may one day open a location in the dc area. I think you all would do well here. Thanks again for yet another awesome experience. Lance PS - I saw on your website that you guys have a food challenge. That burger looks insane! I will have to get up the courage and see if I can find a few friends to try that one friday when we feel like heading north again.

My wife and I regularly ordered from them since they were in the back of a local store. Now they have a new dining room, higher prices and the food quality seems to be slipping... I just posted a pic of dried and overcooked wings and old Mac and cheese that my wife purchased.. to say the least she is not happy. We want to support local business but not when the food is not up to par.

First, a 3 star review is perfectly acceptable in my book. It means it's a solid joint but nothing blew my socks off but I fully expect to pull them into our dining rotation. Checked this out Friday night and we're definitely going back to try some other menu items. The convenience store location is admittedly a bit odd but please don't let that stop you from trying it. Honestly, once we pulled up we both said 'maybe we shouldn't try this place' but we stuck to our plan and so glad we did. On to the food. There were some hits and some 'glad we tried, don't need to try it again' dishes, but no true misses. The Indian taco (lamb) was delicious. Loved the taste, the texture, and the sauce. Eggplant burger was crispy and delightful but I personally would've been happier eating it without the bun. Catfish po'boy was ok. The sub roll was way too much bread for it. The fish was fried well. Slaw was good and the sauce was tasty. Husband liked the greens so I won't gripe about them because I know I'm picky about greens. We also tried the hoppin john. It's not hoppin john. That was the disappointment of the night. I don't know why I decided not to read the description because it clearly states it's black beans. It tasted like a passable version of beans and rice, nothing like a good low country version. The fries (both kinds) were good but had to be heated up at home. These are darker, hand cut fries. I wish they'd put the sauce containers in with the orders instead of the condiment bag because we had a tough time figuring out what sauce went where and I ended up foolishly pouring some of the rosemary syrup on my eggplant thinking it was the balsamic reduction. No harm, no foul. Their menu has a lot of tasty sounding options and I look forward to trying more of them. And will someday get up the caloric courage to try chicken and waffles. In the meantime, check it out for yourself!

I can't vouch for the location either way, as we ordered delivery last Sunday while vending at an art fair. Their food however, is astoundingly tasty. A bunch of us ordered, varying from the chicken/waffles to the eggplant sandwich to the Indian taco. They were all received with gusto and appreciative noises. The food is fresh, the delivery may take a bit but it wasn't too long. Tasty, delicious, warm and filling. They don't skimp on the sizes, and the ingredients all show attention to flavor and source. I wish I got to Harford Park more often. This place needs to be supported.

I was pleasantly surprised by this place. You wouldn't think much of it on the outside but upon entering you'll find a cozy, relaxed, and artsy interior. The staff are friendly and make you feel at home. The food is great. Soul food can sometimes be greasy and salty but definitely not the food from here. The flavors are well balanced and tasty. I had the cornmeal fried catfish with Mac n cheese. The catfish was fresh and moist. The Mac n cheese wasn't excessively cheesy and too rich, it was well balanced. I was definitely happy with my meal. We'll be back!

Not your mama's soul food... and that's not a bad thing. I had been hearing about this funky little spot in towson called herb and soul. The name in and of itself got me interested. I went online to check out there menu and it blew my mind away! Some people tend to look at soul food chefs as one trick ponies and boy, this place does everything to shatter that perception. I have never been to a soul food spot that sells vegetable pave, crispy eggplant burger, gluten free truffle balls! I spoke with one of the owners, the gentleman in the front of the store and he seemed very down to earth which is always welcome. The location is a little hole in the wallish but he had stated that he's looking to expand into a sit down location in the near future. I understand crawling before you attempt to walk my friend. I ordered the crabcake sandwich platter for myself and my friend ordered the lamb indian taco and we both ordered the catfish entree for good measure. The crabcake was broiled to perfection...READ THAT, BROILED (and not fried) to perfection. It came with some really nice fries. The star of the show was the "indian" taco. very delicious. the lamb was perfectly seasoned and the soft chewy yet warm bread was so good. good thing they gave us two because I definitely took one of my girls because it smelled so go (typical guy). the catfish was really good, fried crispy and moist on the inside. not overcooked like a lot of people tend to do. All in all a great experience. can't wait to come back and try more things. T

Another business that should not offer a Groupon! I cannot tell you if the food is any good because there was a 2 and 1/2 hour wait. The manager tells me that he might be able to get me in in an hour and 15 minutes, but they close at 8. He then proceeds to tell me I waited until the last day to use my my coupon and that if I don't want to wait for the 16 orders in front of me, I can call Groupon and get my money back. I told him I will, and that he can kick rocks. Not being prepared for YOUR promotions is one thing, but being a smart-ass to a first time customer assures that I will never set foot in this rabbit-ass establishment again.

"Herb And Soul" ...say that out loud. herb an soul.....herban soul ....urban soul. That pretty much sums up this place. Homestyle comfort food from the heart, a dash of funk, and a lot of soul. The food has great flavor, great simple complexity (just enough complexity yet a simple foundation and traditional technique), is seasoned perfectly, and it doesn't make you feel gross and nasty afterwards. Will definitely be re-evaluating this solid 4 business with more visits. I'm excited to see where it goes. - I love their philosophy as seen on their website. Local ingredients = sustainability for farming and food future and therefore the world's future. Support your local farms/farmers markets/know where your ingredients come from!! - I love places like this that are randomly in a convenience store. 1 table with 3 seats. This place is mostly a catering/take out place for now. - Chicken and waffles entree - Finally my favorite chicken and waffles in baltimore. The seasoning on the chicken (boneless slices) is money, the small sprig of rosemary among the chicken imparted its aroma and flavor slightly onto the chicken, not overwhelming at all. There were 5 slices probably totaling about 4 ounces of chicken meat total. The amount of crispy breading on the chicken was high compared to the actual size of the meat, but this is an elegant tasting chicken. It's not a nasty 2am drunk food kind of fried chicken. The waffle was a fluffy, decent consistency sweet potato waffle. The key is that it's not too sweet. There is only a hint of sweetness. Good contrast in both texture and flavor between the waffle and the fried chicken. I wish that the waffle had a slight crust on it but this is personal preference, and it may have lost its crisp/crust in the box on the way home. Their website has a picture of chicken and waffles with huge bone in thighs. I'm not sure if it was different because it was the groupon pre-fixe. -w/ baked Mac and Cheese - Made with local cheese, you can definitely tell this is not a store bought kind of mac and cheese. Simple yet good texture good creaminess, seasoned well. Some of the pasta was overcooked but this may have been due to the wait in the car (less than 5 minutes) - Pork Loin wrapped in bacon entree - In total probably about 3.5-4 ounces cooked. The pork loin was dry, hopefully just a fluke. Though dry, the bacon wrapped around it saved the day. ok flavor, not oversalty, not too much of a porky taste. Overall ok considering the dry pork. - w/ The southern green beans were great. Had bits and even chunks of pulled pork in it. Loved it. Well seasoned. The sweet potatoes were great. I usually don't like sweet potatoes but these were good. Kept it structure and mashed well. - Bread pudding dessert - Has raisins in it. I love bread pudding..this is a good bread pudding. Nice and Sweet, not over the top. Good glaze over it. Awesome texture, raisins add a nice sweetness and texture as well. -Indian (navajo) Lamb Taco - I've heard about navajo bread and was really excited to try this. I spoke to a native american friend of mine and she was telling me how their traditional food is actually not very "flavorfull" in the American sense. Only in recent decades have they been using salt and seasonings. They don't really use herbs, etc. "it's pretty bland" according to a friend. With that in mind, eat this taco. The lamb was very gamey, not much seasoning, you can really taste the tender lamb flavor coming through. It was tender, but I could see many people being turned off from this. Probably the most gamey meat I've eaten. Topping of shredded cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, and a bit of a housemade aoili. The bread is a fried bread- Similar texture to a gordita shell from tbell but obviously much more traditional, less nasty. Overall, I loved it - also partly because you can't really get this anywhere else. When I peeked back into the kitchen, I saw the chef working his magic. As an aspiring home cook, food and chef admirer, I understand to a certain extent how good chefs move, and I understand one of the top rules for a cook: Taste your food, taste, taste, taste. The Chef moved like a chef, and I saw him tasting and adjusting the food appropriately. Considering they focus on local ingredients it's appropriately priced in my opinion. The side portions were slightly smaller than I'd like but I love how they focus on the sides as much as the entrees. *Also a note the length of time it takes for you to get home. You can't complain about food becoming soggy if it takes you 30 minutes of waiting time. Luckily this time there was only a 5 minute drive. Next time i'm eating it ASAP in the car! Overall, a solid 4 ..good for a new business. Will be back

Amazing food here! It's a carry out and a little place inside a convenience store, but don't let that fool you...the food was excellent! I had the appetizer chicken & waffles and they were great, actually a nice little treat before the meal which was the cajun chicken pasta. The cajun pasta was perfect, it had a spicy, delicious taste with some squash and greens mixed in...the chicken on top was the real kicker, and it complimented the pasta perfectly. For dessert it was on to the apple and mango-pie egg rolls. They came with a caramel sauce and were the best way to end the meal. Couldn't be happier!

Made a reservation for 3 which was honored right away. Beyond that, the service was a bit slow. Ordered the pasta with vegan "meatballs" - tons of pasta but 4 very small balls - the size of cherry tomatoes- odd mix. The hoppin Jon made with black beans was a nice change but too much rice to bean ratio. Also has a sweet taste to it - in fact, so did the Brussels sprouts & kale - those dishes had the same oddly sweet flavor profile. Waiter said the cook was unhappy with the Mac & Cheese that was just made so we had to get something else. Biscuits moist & yummy. Didn't know it was comedy night but it was okay ... Left after meal was done tho. I don't think I'd go back - nothing exceptional and pretty slow to get drinks and food. Too many awesome options in Baltimore!

yes, go through the convenience store to this palace of good food: turkey with outsize taste, greens that make you smile, their getting-famous chicken and waffles, catfish po boy in a crunchy roll, spicy cajun shrimp on cheesy polenta (or was it grits?). I bought a slice of crackling crust pie to take home, had a taste of it and had to order a second to go. This place has no atmsphere but it doesn't matter, as the tastes are phenominal

The takeout is a fail! Arrived in good timing but nothing i expected. The 13.00 bison burger was the size of a kids meal patty with one half piece of bacon and feta little cheese. The Burger was grilled too ''well done'' hard to bite into. The fries were cold and limp. My soup was really good after warming it up in the microwave. And any soda needs a can opener. All in all disappointed, $24.04 wasted

Very mediocre. The fried pickles and peppers had a batter with little flavor (corn starch or something). Chicken was not memorable and potatoes (mashed) were okay. The shrimp sandwich had excellent shrimp though but bread was meh... The menu descriptions made me think this was a place with local gourmet foods with a creative twist but its very misleading. Wouldn't order here again

Just ate hear for lunch after reading the City Paper review. So glad we did! My husband got the Bison Burger with duck bacon and pickle on potato roll, I got the chicken and waffles. All of it was excellent! Including the delicious lemonade and hand cut French fries! Don't let the outside appearance fool you. Yes, it's in a convenience store that sells lotto tix and Little Debbie's - but this place is AWESOME! Local! And Fresh!

We have been wanting to try this place for awhile. We were greeted by a wonderful lady at the front and a jazz combo was playing on the small stage which gives the place a way cool vibe for a typical Friday night. The space has a great eclectic mix of mid century modern and repurposed rustic tables and chairs. All very comfy. (Go with live candles in the mason jars, guys, it would make a difference.)There where some specials that we tried out. The watermelon/avocado/ crab appetizer was a nice summer start. Loved the fresh flavors together. I had the roasted halibut and the idea was good, but as one poster indicated; a little more seasoning would have made it better. Somewhere along the line it was also missing the promised side with tossed field greens. My husband had the fava bean & corn chowder with bacon. It was a little too thick--we actually scooped it with the rice crackers that came with. His Cajun Pasta with Chicken was very good with a nice heat. Delicious Sweet Potato biscuits also come before dinner. Last up-- the beignets are incredible--with the good cup of Zeke's coffee, the band swingin', I could close my eyes and think of NOLA. Service is what I would best define as inexperienced. The waiter was very sweet and was trying, but there were several missteps that the management needs to pick up on quickly and get ironed out. We will definitely be back--the standard menu items have gotten lots of attention here and we will absolutely get back to try again. My thought is with the service issues resolved and some small tweaks with the menu, this place will be hoppin' by Fall.

I went here the other day because of a Groupon I purchased. The food was delicious and the entree was huge! I got the chicken and waffles app, Cajun pasta and mango apple egg rolls for dessert. It really was all great. The reasons it's getting a 4 Are the location and the customer service. The guy behind the counter seemed irritated I was there I got the same feeling when I placed the order on the phone. This place isn't going to last often if that doesn't change!

I was a little taken by the location but when I got the food home both my wife an I were pleasantly surprised. The food was just so good that i called back an talked to one of the owners to tell him that it would not be a one time visit ,we are hooked on this place. As far as a note to the cook Please keep up the good work,Great job,a diamond in the rough .It's in the back of a convince store something like you would see in Jamaica, but please go in the food is worth it UPDATE: (6-1-2013)Herb an Soul now has a formal looking restaurant ,and on this Saturday night some very professional Jass musicians, I believe the food has only gotten better. Both my wife an I were treated to a 5 Star experience at very good prices.Adam are waiter was young an went above an beyond to make this a special night. Do Not miss this Restaurant on your bucket list of places to eat in Baltimore. An say Hi to chef David for me he's always there.

It's like the restaurant was designed for me. When I go out to eat, I look for places that can supply me with something delicious made much better than I can make it at home. That's exactly what Herb and Soul delivers: take-out miracles. Armed with a Living Social voucher, I tried their "Indian" tacos appetizer, their locally-sourced cornmeal-crusted blue catfish, their prime rib over veggie mash, their Iberian greens, baked mac n' cheese, Southern green beans and Southern bread pudding. Being from Nashville, I feel up to judging all of that. Their Indian tacos are generous piles of chopped fresh veggies and seared steak (or whatever meat you choose) with cheese on some sort of chapati-like flatbread, which must be the "Indian" part, and fresh aoili on the side. They are delicious. I meant to eat just one, as the two together was a medium-sized meal, but I ate both. Moving on and already pretty stuffed, I tasted the cornmeal-crusted catfish, which are big, meaty strips of perfectly cooked catfish lightly and completely wrapped in a delicate, yet explosively crispy cornmeal crust. I would have preferred a wedge of lemon to the horseradish sauce that accompanied them, but only because I don't like horseradish. It, like all of their sauces, was homemade and I'm sure a fine representative of its species. The catfish could have used a little more salt, but that's what salt packets are for (and they did include that). It was otherwise absolutely perfect and reheated crisply in a toaster oven the next day. The Southern green beans served with the catfish were truly Southern-style - a mushy saltines that I normally dislike - but somehow rich and peppery in a way that made them so much better than standard meat n' three fare. I think they were born fresh and cooked to mushiness, rather than born canned and reheated from original mushiness. The baked mac n' cheese was some of the best I've ever had: noodles thoroughly coated and yet not swimming in rich cheesy goodness, with pockets of crunchy buttered breadcrumbs throughout. Yum! Glad that came with two dishes! I'm not entirely sure what prime rib is supposed to be, but their "prime rib" is pot roast like my stepmom makes it, and she's been catering and running successful Creole restaurants for decades now. What I'm saying is that it's very good, whatever they call it. The meat was juicy, seared on the outside, and could be eaten with a spoon, and the veggie mash was the natural outcome of slow cooking root veggies with beef for hours, until the cartilage in the beef becomes gelatin and the veggies become a squishy, salty, fatty bed. Such awesome comfort food! The Iberian greens served with it seemed to be mostly kale, and like the pot roast - I'm sorry, "prime rib" - had just a touch too much salt, but were otherwise excellent and a perfect match for the beef and mac n' cheese. I felt kind of high after eating the pot roast, so maybe there's a secret ingredient in there. Finally, the bread pudding took me by surprise by actually being a pudding, not a bread casserole, as is the norm. It was so moist that I could smear it with a spoon! It's dotted with pineapple, which I guess is what makes it Southern, but it could use a little something extra. I poured a little cream over it at home, but homemade caramel sauce would have been perfect. It was still very good, but the weakest dish in an outstanding menu. The lady behind the counter was efficient and friendly, and as a last note, my two meals provided enough food for three good size meals or five lunches. The appetizer alone was a meal. I'll be going back soon and often!

The expression "good things come in small packages" definitely applies to this restaurant...or should I say counter in the back of a convenient store. My roommate is an Intern for Yelp and always bringing me along to try new places she honestly had me a little worried with this one I wasn't quite sure where she was taking me. Once we reached the counter and ordered our chicken and waffles with a side of potato salad (the best I've ever had) we sat at the only table they had and played UNO. It was a great time who would have thought to have game available to play while you wait for your food. When I was younger my mom would always bring a deck of cards with her when we went out to eat, it made me feel at home. It was very clean and well-kept and the cooks even came out to chat with us. It had that down south hospitality feeling to it and I loved it. Once the food came out it was all silence except for the few "oh my god this is so good" and the "I'm in heaven" comments that we were able to spit out in-between bites. from the moment you opened your box the smell took over your taste buds everything was delicious. If we didn't have plans to go elsewhere I would of stayed, played more games, and then choice a new entree for dinner.

The food is delicious. The staff is super nice. Make a reservation... They are only open on Fridays and Saturdays right now and it gets packed pretty fast. The menu is unique... Definitely not your average food selection. Everything is made fresh! I always order the chicken and waffles and the rolls. I forgot the name of the rolls, but they look like egg rolls... It has jerk chicken, yams and greens in it. I tried the crab and Mac n chz rolls... They were okay. The chicken rolls are better. The sweet tea is good too. This place is a BYOB place ;) so you do not have to worry about buying alcoholic drinks by the glass.

I was craving soulfood and came across this restaurant on Yelp! Its a small and quaint restaurant but its got great heart. A jazzy band plays after 7pm on the weekends I believe and it created a great ambiance. Modern decor. I got the catfish with collard greens and mac/cheese. Their greens were the best I've ever had and the catfish just melted in your mouth. Great spot! The restaurant manager, Cassandra, was so warm and inviting. Made me feel very welcomed!

Stopped by early on Saturday and made a reservation for later that night. Was sat right away and within a few minutes I had some great biscuits and butter. After a brief wait, the waitress took my order and before I knew it I had my first course: a pork belly and bbq black eyed peas small plate that was just perfect. Then followed the main: a generous piece of short rib with root veg mash and some kale underneath, all in all a great filling meal. Decided to take the desert to go, but now I'll definitely be going out of my way to visit again, even with limited hours!

After two less than favorable dining experiences here, I can honestly rate this as a place that is better for take-out than dine-in. Given that it started out as a small place where that was your only option, perhaps you can assign the blame to this place still having a carry out mindset in its delivery of service. Front of the house: We had the same waiter both times so I think it's fair to say that (while he was pleasant and polite) he was extremely forgetful. We've found ourselves asking for every request at least two times. Either that or he walks past and looks at us then remembers what he forgot. He also isn't well versed on what to say when making excuses for the nonsensical operations of back of the house. For example, I wanted to order a dish that had poached eggs as a side. I asked if I could have boiled eggs instead because I don't like eggs any other way. He came back with the answer of no and said the chef is set in his ways. On my second visit, I asked to substitute fries with another side and was told that there would be a $4 upcharge. Funny, because on my first visit there was no charge. Not to mention that the price difference between fries and the side I requested was only $2. His answer? A polite shrug and repeat of the price. Inconsistencies like this just make both front and back of the house look bad. Back of the house/Management: During my last visit I called and made a reservation for 2pm. Why at 2:20 am I being told that we have to order soon because the kitchen is about to close. It's enough that you're only open for 2.5 hours for a SATURDAY brunch, but why would RSVPs knowingly be arranged for a time that doesn't give them adequate time to relax and enjoy an appetizer and the atmosphere? To add insult to the injury of above, we witnessed two young gentleman enter in near closing time and saw they were friends of the owner/management. We also witnessed these gentleman being served hot food well after we were told the kitchen was closed. So not only do you close early to your patrons and rush their dining experience, but you blatantly demonstrate that you rushed us for no apparent reason by catering to friends? Completely unprofessional! Food: Vegetable Pave- I HAVE NO IDEA. On three different occasions I've requested it and all 3 times was told they'd "just run out." Considering the second time I went, they'd only been open for an hour and I only saw meat dishes on the neighboring tables, I'm beginning to think this is an imaginary dish. Oatmeal Risotto- Don't be mislead by the description. It has quinoa AND rice. It was way too starchy a dish and was borderline bland. Po' Boys (shrimp or catfish)- As seen in my pictures, you get more bread than actual meat so it's reminiscent of a Subway sub except it's $9 instead of $5 and certainly not a footlong Crispy Eggplant Burger- My personal favorite and always sure to please. Heaps of eggplant and the toppings are a perfect compliment Liberian Greens- Crowd pleaser and extremely flavorful for them to not have been seasoned with meat Mac & Cheese- Hit or miss. Out of the three different times I've ordered it, I've only had one batch that was remarkable Home Fries- Delicious! But good luck getting them substituted for fries, you'll be treated as if you're speaking a foreign language Pasta Verde- That's about all this dish is-PASTA. The meatballs were tiny and seemed like more of an afterthought than an accompaniment. I haven't sworn off Herb & Soul completely for dining in house. I will try to visit during one of the evenings when they feature entertainment. Having been a carryout for so long, I can understand that sometimes you get stuck in that mindset. But if you want to provide customers with a 5 star review rating, that box needs to be broken out of and quick! In the meantime, Herb & Soul will receive and keep this 3 star rating from me and I'll just call in my orders and enjoy my food at home.

Holy mother of Jesus. Give me more of those sweet potato biscuits with that sugary maple butter. Mhm! Those came out after our appetizer, which was super weird... But okay since they were ridiculously good. We ordered soft drinks because the mint habanero tea was sold out-- boo. At 630 on a Wednesday night? Not okay. Well, we began with the crab Mac and cheese rolls, jerk chicken and Thai style rolls to try. Had to get a taste of them all. All were pretty good, but my favorite was the jerk chicken and Thai style ones. The crispness on the outside was perfect too. We weren't big fans of the mushy Mac inside of a crispy roll, but interesting idea. Hubby got the farm burger, which he seemed to like. It had good flavor and the egg was done nicely on top. The patty was well seasoned- from what I could tell it could have been a little thicker. The fries were fresh, but needed salt. It appeared the whole restaurant was sharing the salt and pepper shakers, so we didn't bother. I got the catfish with Mac and cheese with the greens. I wanted to get the chicken and waffles, but on burger night, it's a limited menu of about three dinner items and the burger items, totally not cool. Catfish was super moist and well flavored. I even asked for tartar sauce and got some housemade tartar-- really good! The greens are so delicious. They're moist, succulent and all that! The Mac and cheese was bland, it didn't really have a taste, so I left it be. For dessert we had the beignet trio. It was good, but nothing like the real Louisiana thing. They were like flat crispy on the outside, moist and wet on the inside pastry doughnuts. The agave whipped cream that they were paired with was divine-- so creamy and sweet, yet not too heavy. Not sure I would get these again since I've had the real thing-- but if you haven't then they may be good! The service from our waiter was a bit slow, as far as refills and bringing out sauces, etc. I appreciate that the food took time to cook, as it's fresh. However, the other waiter seemed to be on top of his game, so better luck next time for us. I'd definitely return, I want to try the chicken and waffles. But I don't know if that same waiter would do it for me...

The first time I came here, I would say I had the best meal of my life. They had just opened. When I saw that they focus on offering "farm-to-table", local food, I said we had to go. Like many other reviewers noted, looking at the facade is off-putting. Just go inside, you'll be pleased. Very welcoming and relaxing. The woman who is the manager always makes you feel like at home. And the food! OMG. First, always get the Liberian greens. You will never be disappointed. We've tried many of specials that were always wonderful, but things on the regular menu that we'd recommend are the lamb burger, the chicken and waffles, the rosemary chicken, the root vegetable mash, the Old Bay fried chicken, and cajun chicken pasta. Oh, try the beignes for dessert. You may want to share them, because Herb & Soul is generous with its portions. Herb & Soul offers live mellow jazz on Saturday night, and it's BYOB. I'd recommend always getting a reservation. Some may consider this place pricey, but I think it's worth it. Treat yourself, and enjoy the experience.

Amazing, flavorful but not over seasoned food. I love lots of flavor and salt but I understand i wont get this eating out because some dont like so much seasoning. Owner is very nice. Small quaint place. Make reservations because if not then you can end up wait an hour to sit like we did the first visit. They put twists in southern meals. Like kale biscuits were a free starter. Mac n cheese, fishermans stew, catfish, tenders and frog legs were all so delicious. Great flavor and fried well. We are a family that tries each others food and boy am i glad we do. Saturday nights they have an artist to play music. Our Second visit was so memorable with a lovely singer named Ama and her skilled band. It was such a treat. Great service, talented chefs, nice atmosphere, and great organic local ingredients. Priceir than i like but well worth it. For a family of 4 our check with tip os around $100.

This review, unlike all of the others I read (thank you, everyone) is about my experience with delivery. In short: oh dear god. In long: so I travel for work. 100% of the time. and 80% of the time, finding quick, easy food is annoying. Picture it: you worked all day. You drove to an airport. You dropped your car off, got on a rental car shuttle, went through security, got on a plane, took off, landed, and then did all of that in reverse--shuttle, car rental, drive. You have two hours until you need to sleep, you are hungry, and you are FINALLY at your destination. You do not want to go out again. I promise. So I've taken to ordering food online. Tonight I tried Herb&Soul for the first time--because it was raining and I did not want to walk up the hill in the rain just to get to the Greene Turtle. I ordered the lamb taco and the Herb&Soul roll (an egg roll with collards and chicken inside) and I have to say: ohdeargod. The roll was good. Don't get me wrong. But I'm not going to spend a lot of time talking about it because: The taco(s) was/were awesome. I'll use the past tense, because they are gone. The fry bread shell held up to the drippy, awesome sauce which resulted from the ground lamb. And kale instead of lettuce--just yes. Also--more than also--the cheese. It was an actual element in the taco rather than a waxy garnish. Salty and creamy. Yum. I will be ordering from Herb&Soul again. Even though I feel badly making them deliver to my sad hotel room. It is the best business travel alone in a Marriott food I've had possibly ever. And I eat a lot of sad business travel lonely hotel room food. In fact, it would even be amazing in a more joyful setting. So please: order food from here. Or, better, get some friends and go to the actual restaurant. Maybe invite me.

I love this place! The menu is different every time I go in...and the specials are always the best thing on the menu. Southern food done perfectly. It can be tricky to find at first, but so worth it once you do! It's also awesome to catch some music while you're there!

Haven't gotten my food yet but the decor and vibe are very welcoming. Feels like a living room. Update - 9/23/14- I've been back a few times and I still love it! The service is great and so is the food. The atmosphere feels like my grandparents house, warm and welcoming.

Oh, sweet Jesus (both a compliment and an exasperated declaration). Let me start with the negatives first, to get them out of the way: The decor was sparse and eclectic and not thought out at all. We walked in, uncomfortably stood around for about 10 minutes until a woman (manager?) addressed us (this was AFTER she finished chatting up a couple and finished talking on the phone). Alright, not the best first impression... She said it was about a 5 to 10 minute wait for a table, so we sat ourselves down on the small bench by the front door. Well...5 to 10 minutes went by. 15...20...she apologized a few times and was very talkative about anything and everything- which I didn't mind, but I was starting to get really hungry. 30 minutes go by and she directs us to the other side of the room, away from everyone else, in a darkly lit corner only to wait even longer. This was SUPER awkward, as I felt like I had just been shunned. What confused me was that there were a few empty tables, so why we couldn't just sit at one?? Anyways, my SO and I cracked open our BYOB (wine) and started to drink away our hunger. When the woman 'remembered' us, she came over and apologized once more. Ok, we get it. Just seat us. ALAS, 'tis not our night! She said our table would be ready "soon" and mentioned getting a complimentary appetizer. She then left us to our corner once more *tear* I think by the time we were done waiting, an hour+ had passed us by. My SO and I conversed many times about leaving, but we had a groupon and it was getting late, not to mention that at this point, we were committed to getting something out of all of this waiting. FINALLY, she sat us down. Once that was accomplished, it was smooth sailing, THANK GOD. And so begins the positive list: They had a deviled egg trio that was beyond delicious! They were so delicate and smooth. One was topped with a sliver of crispy chicken skin. Another was topped with a homemade kimchi with a slight kick. And my favourite was topped with a smoked salmon that was to die for. They said it was a limited item on the menu, so they may or may not still have it! (We did get them for free, due to our excruciatingly lengthy wait). After that moment of pure bliss, we ordered the Shrimp & Grits as well as the Old Bay Fried Chicken. OH SWEET BABY JESUS. Yes, so much yes! That reaction may be a little exaggerated, but damn those dishes were heavenly! They came with the mac-n-cheese, sauteed veggies, polenta, wild boar hash, greens, the fixin's! All of it was divine and SOOOOO so so so worth the awkward and infuriating wait! Not to mention that the bread pudding was fantastic! This all happened a few months ago, so for me to still drool a little while talking about it is pretty much a sign that it's time to pay them a visit. I only hope it's just as delicious now as it was then! I also hope that you do NOT have the luxury of staring at their poorly decorated walls for too long before you're staring at your empty plate and your overstuffed and satisfied belly!

Had the three course meal, fantastic!! For the meal they served short rib which was phenomenal, I ate a short rib at Fleet Street Kitchen that wasn't as good as this one. Defiantly a hidden gem.

Yelp almost never disappoints, but definitely dropped the ball on this one. I tried grabbing a table a couple months ago without a reservation on a Saturday evening around 8pm, but was turned away because all the tables had been taken. I was told that reservations for Saturday evenings are usually full by Wednesday mornings. That's fine because i thought I'll just try to get their acclaimed fried chicken to go. Wrong. Apparently they don't do takeout on Saturdays because there is only one chef and he can't handle a full house and takeout orders. Completely understandable. I swung by for brunch on my second attempt. I was worried about coming right in the middle of brunch hours (11am-2pm) and finding a seat, but that wasn't an issue as there were only 2 small tables occupied when we arrived. My wife and I ordered the chicken & waffle, Indian taco with beef, and a side of home fries. The fried chicken and Belgian sweet potato waffle looked very appetizing, but didn't hit the spot at all. There were about 4 flacid, quarter-inch thick strips of room-temperature, white-meat chicken on a fresh waffle. If there was a highlight to the dish, it would definitely have to be the waffle. The Indian taco was the better dish out of the two. For some reason I thought I was going to get some Navajo fry bread? Maybe because that was what was advertised on the menu. Instead, the beef, beans, lettuce, sautéed veggies, and cheese were wrapped in an oversized, grease-soaked wonton wrapper. The same kind you can find with your egg drop soup from your local fast food Chinese takeout. The flavors in it were pretty good though, and the curry aioli that came with it could make shoe leather taste good. I made a mistake ordering the home fries. Small, diced potatoes with bits of bell peppers and onions, sitting in a pool of oil. Some pieces were burnt and greasy and the rest was soggy and greasy. Although I was hoping for a large order of crispy potatoes, I'm glad it was pretty small because it all went to waste. I wish I could say that the service or decor made up for the sub par meal, but I can't. I couldn't imagine taking a date there. The restaurant is not in the nicest area and the interior looks like an eclectic cafeteria. It's on the same level as the restaurants on 'Restaurant Impossible' before they are renovated.

We were very happy with this restaurant. I read some reviews about the fried chicken and knew we had to stop by. The wait staff was extremely friendly and the entire place has a cool hipster ambience to it. The wait staff is really nice and provided some great recommendations. We were both happy with our meals and would stop by here again. The fried chicken was definitely pretty good.

Love this place! A friend and I dined here a few weeks ago, and the hostess was a delight. Our waitress and the staff were also very nice to talk to and seem to care about how we were doing. The food was delicious (the homemade biscuits (and you can tell they truly are homemade) were great, as was the Old Bay chicken). The atmosphere was laid back, just the perfect balance between a family/home-y feeling and a small gathering/get together party. Hard to explain, but we loved it. Definitely becoming a regular.

I usually read reviews on yelp before I head to a new place. I literally laughed out loud when the waiter did the same thing to me that he did to other yelpers. Had an early reservation got there early. It was pretty empty. Wasn't sure what I wanted to eat. Attempted to order and appetizer and asked the waiter to come back in a few minutes and I was told I needed to order everything at once because they get crowded but it's "no rush". Is that an oxymoron? Anyway, aside from the waiter rushing me when it was no rush..being forgetful, giving me someone else's bill and being over apologetic each time he came to the table the food was decent. The soul rolls were very tasty, jerk wings were good. We also had old bay fried chicken and pasta. The pasta was a little bland. The food overall was good. It's also byob. And how convenient to have a liquor store right next store. I would compare this food to Georgia browns in DC. Soul food that's fresh and not very heavily seasoned. Also, on the outside this place doesn't look like a restaurant when it's dark. It's looks like a little store and if it wasn't for Google maps I would have missed it. Would I go back? Maybe and I probably would request a different server. Sometimes service means everything.

So I arrived in Baltimore recently, and I was looking for a good soul/southern food spot to check out, and I found this, and I will say that it was one of best culinary decisions I made in a very long time!!! haha! First off, this place just finished their renovations and expansion, and there is so much potential for it to be a great dining and entertainment spot for sure. The place consists of a few tables and chairs, bench like booths, and some loungey furniture to rest after eating a huge meal of good fried food! :) It has a very homey-R&B vibe going for it from my 1st impression. In addition, this place has a small stage for local acts/musicians to play their music while you wine & dine! haha! I was told that LIVE entertainment is provided mostly Fri. & Sat., all locally, ranging from Jazz to Indie Rock, VERY COOL!!! So I had the fried chicken and with a sweet potato waffle. I've never had a sweet potato waffle before, and WOW it was not that heavy, but more thick in consistency than a Belgian, but it paired well with my fried chicken. The fried chicken was not that greasy, it was cut into delectable strips, with a nice seasoned flavor to it! Overall, this was an EXCELLENT dish, and I recommend it highly! I also had a half and half sweet ice tea-lemonade. It was very good, not that sweet, and you can really taste that it was homemade! Actually, all the condiments from the ranch, syrup, and many more are made from scratch/homemade. Except for the butter, oh well, haha! I wanted to try their bread pudding, but I was stuffed, and I had a long day ahead of me, so I did not have the courage to go it ! I was told, they do a Southern style mainly, but flavors may vary from a regular Southern style to "3 berry style" I was going to give this place 4 stars, but I know for a fact from the owner himself, that the bread pudding is AMAZING, and even made him into bread pudding fan, like myself, so for that fact plus the friendly service, food, and cool ambiance I give this place 5 stars. I SHALL BE BACK FOR SURE SOON, to try that bread pudding and to listen to some good LIVE music!!!

From the outside this place, you would think it looks closed or went out of business. But when you go inside you will find a cute, comfy, and artsy restaurant. We stopped by on Tuesday night and it was a BBQ themed menu, so we tried a few items... -frog legs were delish in the pineapple chipotle bbq sauce -cucumber salad was simple and refreshing -My friend had the brisket with the molasses BBQ sauce and he said it was the best piece of meat he's ever had. -I decided to have the pulled zucchini (partly bc I had too much meat this weak and more that I was curious about pulled zucchini?!) I had it with the Carolina bbq sauce. It was nice but a bit more sweet than I expected. -old bay potato salad and greens were also a hit. also, to start they bring out these tasty little sweet potato/kale biscuits - yum yum AND the ginger rosemary homemade lemonade was amazing!!

This place has great customer service and great energy. I've never been to any dining establishment that was so warm and welcoming. The manager Cass was genuine and delightful to be around. In addition to the awesome service, the food was fresh and amazing. My friend and I ordered the fried frog legs, catfish, greens and mac and cheese. The food well seasoned, they also served us tomato and basil biscuits that were mouth watering. There was a live band yesterday that was really good, but I'm unsure if they have music on a regular basis. I can't wait to go again!

I heard they recently did renovations and I must say they hit the mark for me! I loved the homey country chic look that they have. Lots of random homey furniture. Sprinkled with enough candles to make it perfect for Date night! They have live music on the weekends! I was able to experience the live music. They had a young man sing many current pop music hits. He was wonderful on the guitar! Food was a bit of a wait, due to everything being homemade. During the long wait, my date and I enjoyed the live music, sweet teas, and southern biscuits! The southern biscuits were so sweet! We tried the chicken and waffles and crab rolls stuffed with Mac and Cheese. Chicken and waffles was perfect! Chicken was crispy without the grease! Waffles was very tasty, no syrup needed!! Crab rolls were so different! I would have never thought to put Mac and cheese and crab together! Herb and Soul did that for me and it made a wonderful meal!! My waiter was cool! He was very attentive and made sure to keep us entertained till our food came. They do have carry out! Also, I saw a drawing table for kids who visit here! I was too stuffed to try desserts! However, I heard that the banana pudding is a must so I will be back for that!!! Sooner than later!
