What a time I had finding this place. My GPS decided to tell me to go every possible direction before finally getting me to Annapolis Rd, and then I took a leap of faith and turned into a random parking lot, which fortunately was the correct location. As Jonathan said, it's around back behind the building it's supposed to be in next to a dry cleaning place. After THAT I managed to absolutely destroy my backside in the parking lot by slipping on ice in front of 3 or 4 people. Well with my ego and tailbone bruised, I figured that there was nothing else the food gods could do to keep me from my first Korean food experience. That's when I discovered that Mona's doesn't accept credit cards. Oh joy. To the liquor store ATM! With the green in hand, I confidently made my way back to the restaurant. The staff was very helpful in suggesting an entree since I don't know anything about Korean food. To my surprise, when I first asked for a suggestion, I was recommended a cheese steak of all things. Apparently they serve more than just Korean. Who would have thought? Well, I was not going to stray from my mission after everything I had been through, so I made a more specific request. I'm going to butcher the spelling here, but I wound up with Bimimbap (beef, rice, egg, chili type paste, and other misc foodstuffs), some other teriyaki beef and rice dish, and Kimchi (some sort of pickled cabbage). I felt that it was a little bit expensive at nearly nine dollars per plate for the Korean. The other items on the menu, however were much less expensive. Well, after my dose of excitement for the night, I snagged the food (after all, "carry out" is in the name), carefully stepped around the ice patch, and retreated to the girlfriend's house to introduce her to Mr. Samuel L Jackson in the movie SWAT. When we broke out the food, it was delicious. My favorite was probably the teryiaki beef, but the Bimimbap was also good. I liked the spiciness that the paste had to it. The Kimchi? Well let's just say that's not really my thing, but I hear it tends to be an acquired taste anyway. In all, I thought it was darn good and I plan on coming back soon to try some of the less exotic menu items. Maybe once all the ice melts.

During my DINFOS stay at Fort Meade, I ate here about once a week. I only ate off of the Korean menu, and I'm particularly partial to the yukgaejung since the miserable Maryland weather always put me in the mood for soup. Beef bulgogi and the bibimbap were also good. The food is cooked to order though, so calling your order in is a good idea.

I'm up in the area once a month. I always go here when I am craving Korean food. If you are in a hurry phone in you order for pick-up.

Everyone talks about this place. But I went one time, and it took like 35 minutes for a cheeseburger. Everyone says this isnt McDonalds, so quality food takes time. Oh well Im here for another year or so, so I'll go again...

I checked this place out after reading the reviews posted here. I had yookgaejang (spicy stew w/beef brisket, noodles, and vegetables). It was very good. It is spicy, of course, but it was the just right amount of spice and very flavorful. If you want to eat there, but are pressed for time, you can order ahead so that it can be ready for you when you arrive. Also, even though restaurant info above said they accept credit cards, her menu said cash only. This is a great find, and I will definitely go back to try another dish.

I was in the area visiting a friend for the first time yesterday and we went here for lunch. I love Korean food and I had the kimchi jjigae and some kimchi. It was delicious and the spice level was perfect. I had enough to take back with me and it will be dinner tonight. Gamsahamnida Mona. I will be back when I visit again.

Love their bulgogi. HUGE portions -- enough to last me 3 meals. I've also had their fried dumplings and japchae which is also very, very good. Again, prices might seem high compared to other mom&pop fast/food type places, but the portions are extremely generous. Word of caution -- they only take cash and they have some weird store hours so call ahead to make sure they're open before you head over.

Went back to Mona's for brunch and ordered the spicy squid, but they were out,so I got the spicy pork and again, was not disappointed. Plenty of spicy pork and rice. Wish I could get more kimchee with the order though.

Great mom-and-pop shop. Be patient, everything is made to order. Best Korean food in the area. Owner are always super friendly and make you feel at home.

I read all the great Yelp reviews and had to check this spot out. My boyfriend and I stopped in on a Saturday afternoon - the lady behind the counter greeted us and asked if we had any questions about the menu - after asking a few questions we placed our order. We did ask about one item - she explained it was a fried dumpling with meat and veggies inside - she then made us a sample of them to try while we waited for our order - I was very impressed! Everything we ordered was great and the portions are huge - we will be back!

Sometimes I actually prefer eating Mona's Korean style dishes rather than your usual Korean BBQ place like Shin Chon, Lighthouse Tofu, and Honeypig. Even though it's more out of the way than those locations, I just feel at home while at Mona's. Plus she has more than just Korean food; she has subs and sandwiches as well! Mona and her husband own this restaurant and even though the decor is outdated and old, you cannot deny the fact that their food is AMAZING. I've had cheese steaks at over 30 different locations and this place by far beats them all. Seriously. You must be thinking I'm crazy, which I probably am, however, I didn't go to every single establishment that sells or makes cheese steak subs so truthfully, this is just my own humble opinion. :) The cheese steaks she makes, I don't know what goes inside, aside from the usual toppings but the flavor of her cheesesteaks are just phenomenal. Chicken cheesesteak is really good too. I also find her Korean dishes to be very good too. Her Kimchi Jigae (Hot soup with Kimchi) and Daeji Gogi (Marinated Pork) are authentic. Her other dishes, I feel like are more for the American taste buds, but are still very good. Americans these days love the sweet, salty, and fatty, which is in her other Korean dishes. I LOVE EM. And I've never heard of chicken bulgogi before, but her version tops it all. It's slightly sweet, comes PACKED into the container with a bunch of white rice that comes with some type of soy sauce/au ju which gives it MUCH more flavor. Maybe too much flavor to some of you. Mona is SO nice and friendly. Her daughter that works there is very friendly and outgoing and her dad and I always have long conversations even after I get my food. It might be partly because of us being Korean, but they're all just fantastic and genuine people. Definitely a hidden gem. My favorite place to get cheesesteak subs and sometimes Korean cuisine and their service is fantastic. HOWEVER, the only con I have for this place is, they're not close enough to where I live and I stopped working nearby there so it's rare that I go to that area these days. Oh and, if you're in a time crunch, you HAVE to order in advance, ESPECIALLY when they're busy. I always have time so I don't mind waiting.

After eating here a few times I feel comfortable with giving them a 3 but would probably be lower if they didn't do cheese steaks. Simply just not very impressive Korean food. The people that run the restaurant or nice enough just wish they put a little more lovin in their oven. Oh well, will just have to go to ellicot city to get some good Korean grub.

This is a hole in the wall kinda place, but with a lotta heart. It's tucked away behind a seedy looking patch of stores, to include a liquor store and Grace Chinese food. It looks kinda dirty too, but on the outside and around. So, why venture onward - you may think. Because the food is plentiful, inexpensive, decent and the staff truly cares about what they're dishing out to you. Many of the options listed (on a board up where you order) were either sold out or they were no longer serving. But what they did have was bulgogi, one of my favorite Korean dishes. One meal was enough to serve a hungry hubby, myself with leftovers! The bulgogi, though tasty, wasn't the same as I've eaten at other Korean restaurants. When I asked for Sirachi (sp) sauce, I received a sweet/spicy Korean paste instead. I LOVED it, by the way. The piping hot rice with that Korean paste and the very sweet and unusual tasting bulgogi - plus, the nicely spiced kimchee, yum. Also, to note; this place only accepts cash.

Surprisingly good Korean food take-out here. It isn't as good as mom's cooking but I enjoyed it. Pricing is about couple dollars more than what you would pay at Hanoori (food court next to H-mart) but the portions are larger. All three of my dishes here tasted slightly better than Hanoori too especially the japchae-bap. Bulgogi and bibimbap were both tasty. One big minus though is the portions for Kimchi. I think most Koreans would agree that this is a big deal. I was seriously thinking about knocking two stars for this atrocity. If I was eating there I could probably ask for more but the take out portion literally fits in a sauce container. I could finish that portion in one bite if I wanted to. BOO~~~~~

Excellent. A great plate lunch at a reasonable price. Kalbi/Galbi is the best thing on the menu in my opinion.

Excellent, authentic Korean food! I lived in Korea for 3 years and this place makes me miss the food so much! I will be definitely be going here again to satisfy my Korean food cravings! The kimchi jiggae (soup) was excellent, the bibimbap was perfect, even the gochujang (red pepper paste) and kimchi tasted exceptionally fresh!

  • Angie J.

Love their Korean food, but some items are not available on certain days. Cash only! Very friendly and pleasant staff. It takes about 30-40 minutes to get your food when dining in. When I place a call-in order, it takes about 45-50 minutes for my food to be ready...no matter what day I call in my order. Overall, the wait is worth it because their Korean food is excellent!

It's almost nepotistic for me to write a review since I've been eating at Mona's for 10 years, and Mona and her family feel like MY family, but good food needs to be shared! The Bulgogi is tender and flavorful, BUT, not all Bulgogi is created the same at Mona's; the beef version is garlicky, with soy sauce, sesame oil and a touch of sweet, while the chicken version tastes more like Japanese teriyaki, and the pork Bulgogi is a steaming pile of savory, juicy meat sautéed in super-spicy red chile Korean hot sauce (had to stop eating that one because I was getting too much hair on my chest!). The Kalbi is marinated, tender and deliciously grilled, then served with crisp, pungent Kim Chee and steamed rice...it's what I'm going to order on Death Row for my last meal. If I had to pick a bone, it would be that they don't take credit or debit cards...it can be inconvenient to stop for cash every time I need a Mona's fix, and I think it probably costs them more in lost business than credit card processing fees. Give Mona's a try! It's in a shady part of town, but aren't some of the best places to eat usually in the worst holes in town? See you there (or on Death Row...East COAST!).

  • Russell W.

I love the food that they have. They are nice to ask questions to. I would say they are on the high side for there pricing. They are very clean in side of the place and have a large seating for you and your family

Mona's totally reminds me of the family run snack shops and little restaurants in my home town. Sometimes these are the best places where people come for good food. It's not for the old flooring, bench seats or cheesy decorations. It's for the handwritten signs that they scotch tape over other parts of the homemade made, the Korean soul that is poured into the cooking, and for the magic that they send you home with. Nobody cares if you're wearing your nice suit or your fancy expensive heels today. Everyone has to eat and everyone likes to eat good food. There are a few tables to sit and enjoy eating your delicious chicken bulgogi, beef bulgogi or kimchee soup. You can serve yourself a cold glass of water and cool off in the air conditioning. You'll need it because if you order it nice and spicy like I do, your body is going to turn up the heat. We usually call in our order from work and have someone pick up for everybody (they only take cash). Mona is great, she does vegetarian soups for us and leaves out the shellfish so I don't get an allergic reaction. She's even suggested dishes I would like and how she can tweak it and will send you home with a take out menu. The take out container for about $9 is enough for about 3-4 meals for me but when I share it with other people I have to set some aside if I want a snack later because they always eat it ALL. p.s. go for Korean food. the American sandwich menu is for your one friend who is tired of eating Korean 5 days in a row or the other friend who thinks burgers and chicken tenders are the only good food in life.

I have eaten hear many of times and it never disappoints. I am not sure big on Korean food but I love beef bulgogi. At Mona's I get it a little spicy with carrots!! Love it!! As stated they only take cash which sucks but there is an ATM machine right around the corner.

Going in I was not impressed. Drawback is it is cash only. Great Korean food! Huge portions. Bulgogi was enough for 2 meals for my husband. Kim chee is basic napa but full of flavor! I had Bi Bim Bap, best I have had in this area, including Ellicott City

Fun place - little hole in the wall back behind bill's package store (god knows what that is) on 175. When you're jonesing for some solid Korean food, come by. Probably hit this up once a year or so. Not quite four star, but an easy three star.

Awesome food! Authentic Korean restaurant that makes you feel like you are in Korea again. Very friendly service. After going in twice, they remembered us and what we ordered! This place is always really busy. It's so tiny so most people get takeout but there are tables if you want to stay and eat.

The food and service is great. CASH ONLY! Inside the restaurant: It is very small and only has about 4 or 5 tables. If you come during the lunch hour, it is wise to arrive at 11 am otherwise, you will get your food to go. Timeliness & service: I recommend that you call your order in at 11 am and then go pick it up. It takes 30 minutes to get your food. They are extremely busy from 11-1. The service is usually pleasant, but remember they get really busy during lunchtime. Food: The food is great and the portion sizes are way to much for one person. It can serve at least 3 people. Things I like the most are bulgogi, yakimundu, and bibimbap. I will be back.

Friendly staff, generous servings, and the best damn Bulgogi I've ever had anywhere. I always make it a point to stop here for lunch when I'm in the area.

Finally had a chance to eat here. Recommend the short ribs (galbi) with the yaki mandu. The bulgogi is also good. They serve good portions. I never leave from here hungry!

Mona's is sooo good. Okay, so this review is going to be EXTREMELY bias, because well, I only order one thing there. And why try something new when what you've found is SO good?! Okay, that's a lie. I have ordered ONE other thing there. Let's start off with that. The philly cheesesteak. It was okay. I've never had a REAL philly cheesesteak, so I had nothing to compare it to, but I would have rather ate a cheesesteak from Charley's grill. Maybe I was just used to Charley's thin slices of already frozen meat that's slapped on a greasy griddle. Anyways, for me, it was not something I'd order again. Only because 1) I already knew what I LOVED to eat from Mona's gourmet carry out and 2) I'd rather eat a cheesesteak from Charley's and lastly 3) I know what I LOVE eating at Mona's...what wait. Yes, it's worth mentioning twice. Okay, okay, so what is it that I love so much? Beef. Bulgogi. Get it! Try it! L-O-V-E I-T! It is simply the best beef bulgogi I've ever had (the chicken's good too. Dang it! That's technically three things I've had from here...I need to stop lying!). If you order take out, she gives you a HUGE box of food. I'm talking about enough for two people to share. Whatever she marinates the beef in, it's absolutely delicious. It's so good with the shredded veggies she sautes it with. Anywhere else I've tried beef bulgogi, I've been disappointed because it's no where near as good as hers is. I really wish I could give Mona an extra star for customer service. My husband is a picky eater and doesn't eat vegetables (yes, I know). Mona would never include the vegetables in the stir fry when I requested. It saved a little bit of my sanity not having to watch my husband at the dinner table pick out all the shredded vegetables...one by one. Oh, thank you Mona. On that note, Mona's is EXTREMELY busy around lunch time. I HIGHLY suggest that you call in your order ahead of time to pick up because there are some days you can still be waiting to pick up your order. She is just that busy. Some might criticize that as bad customer service. For me, I see it as a great mom and pop shop, with the food cooked by none other than mamma herself. Love it. And yes, it's worth the wait. If you haven't been here before, I'd suggest mapping the directions as fellow yelpers have mentioned. Mona's is located in the back of a shady strip mall off of Annapolis Rd (there's a KFC in the next parking lot). There's parking in the back and the entrance is in the back.

    (5)
  • Diana D.

Delish bulgogi. Phone your order ahead to avoid the wait, esp. during lunch time. Portions are pretty big but expect to pay over $10 for your bulgogi. It lasted me two meals, so I guess it's kind of worth it.

It's kinda late at night so this review probably won't be the best. I've been to Mona's a few times and I really love it. I have been living in the area for almost 2 years and only discovered it a month or so ago (thanks to Jonathan's review and google!). I've only ordered Korean food so far but what I've gotten has been pretty good. I also lived in Korea for a while so I'm a bit picky. Korean selection to include kimchi jjiggae (kimchi stew), spicy pork stir fry, bulgogi, gimbap, cheese ramen, yakimondu and a few of other things I don't remember. They also offer varying levels of spiciness for food which is great for people who are new to Korean food. The place is pretty small but has several small tables you can eat at. The staff is incredibly nice and friendly. It is a bit hard to find if you aren't familiar with the area - it's actually in the back of the little shopping center on 175 (parking lot) that has the Cluck-U-Chicken and Bangkok Kitchen. Mona's is closed on Sundays.

Mona's is tucked away behind Bangkok Kitchen and Grace Garden and is a little hard to find if you don't use Yelp map to locate. Entering the aged building you see a hand written sign for Cash Only. Once inside you see what looks like a run down pit beef BBQ joint with an awkward menu. They have basic american food on the menu board above the counter then on the side there is a handwritten Korean Menu. Evidently when they run out they also just put a post it over the menu saying they are out of that item. Although the set up and even the cashier was questionable at best the Korean Beef over Rice was outstanding! My above 3 star rating was an average of the following: 5 Star for Quality and Tasty Food 1 Star for Friendliness and Atmosphere In Summary this place has AWESOME FOOD but I would stick to Take Out Only if you want to savor the experience.

  • Shaun W.

Mona's Korean menu must be better than her American menu. After reading through the menu a few times I finally settled on a chef's salad. When the cashier (who was busy looking over my shoulder chatting up a friend of hers as if I wasn't even there) finally made time to look me in the eye and take my order, I ordered said chef's salad with blue cheese dressing. The cashier asked the other woman in the back (Mona??) and she said they were out of salads. Back to the menu I went in search of something else that sounded good. After I searched the menu for several more minutes the woman in the back asked the cashier "What did he want?" After hearing that I wanted the chef salad she replied "Alright, I'll make him one." It appears that it wasn't that they were out of salad ingredients, but that she didn't want to make me one. A curious experience in a restaurant, indeed. Once the food was ready I was called to the counter to pick it up. "Thanks!" I told the cashier sincerely with a smile. No response at all. Between the run-down atmosphere and the rude behavior of the cashier, I doubt I'll be back; especially with so many other high-quality restaurants to choose from in Odenton. Mona's has earned my first 1-star rating on Yelp. Pros: The vegetables were fresh. Cons: The staff was discourteous and the deli meat had an overly processed texture.

  • Jonathan T.

Mona's has the best Korean food available anywhere in the area! Having spent three years in South Korea, I can easily say that the menu items are as authentic as they are delicious. In case that's not enough, they also have AMAZING cheese steak sandwiches (to include an incredible chicken cheese steak). Regardless of what you end up getting, make sure you pick up an order of Yakimondu as they are fantastic! The place is fairly small but there's usually room to sit and eat if you just can't wait to get the food home. The family that owns and operates it is very friendly and personable. You'll feel like you've known them for years the first time you talk with them. This hidden little gem of a restaurant can be somewhat difficult to find. It's around back (between the laundry mat and the Thai restaurant) with a number of parking places available for all the stores located in that little spot. Also, the address on Yelp doesn't appear to be correct. The actual location of Mona's is further down Annapolis Rd in the group of buildings across from KFC.
