So much effort has been made at Veras, down to the last detail, only to be voided by that horrible smell. I can't review the food because I can't go into the restaurant because it smells horrible.

Nauseatingly tacky and really bad food. But a great view and lots of fun events.

We have been here three times. The first time was a regular dinner, second time was the special Thursday blue crabs, and today is the all you can eat seafood buffet!!! I love this place, but at the first time, the seafood was kind of dry, especially the crawfish. The service was good too. The waitress came to your table often to ask if you need anything else. All in all, I give 4 stars out of 5 to Vera's.

Really somewhat disappointed with the quality of food. We decided to end our vacation with a treat of all you can eat seafood buffet. The selection was really limited with some shell-on shrimp, snow crab clusters, and mussels (none of which was local. The "salad bar" is really just potato salad, coleslaw, and cocktail sauce. The crab was super salty (think stadium peanuts). Paper plates and plastic cups were the icing on the cake. I would drive an extra 20 minutes to buy local seafood.

If you are thinking of trying Vera's all you can eat crabs, shrimp and corn, DON'T!! First of all the crabs are very, very light. Secondly, having worked in a crab house myself, I could tell right away that the crabs were reheated. Moving on to the shrimp. It was very tough and hard to peel, a sign it is overcooked. The corn was good, but not worth $25 for all you can eat, which is what we ended up filling up on. Pay a little more and try somewhere else.

Walk into what is now known as Vera's Beach Club and what you'll find is a nice little restaurant on the water that's got average food, (apps, salads, sandwiches, a little surf, a little turf, and a few obligatory desserts). They have all you can eat crab leg Fridays, Prime Rib Saturdays, and they even do breakfast. But if that's all you notice, you'll be missing the rich history of Vera's which has been a landmark in Lusby since the early 1950's when Vera and her husband originally purchased the property. If you were lucky enough visit what was formerly known as Vera's "White Sands" anytime between 1960 when it was originally opened as a Polynesian themed private yacht club and then in the 1970's when it was opened to the public until 2007, you would have undoubted had the pleasure of seeing Vera herself, dressed like a starlet from Hollywood's golden era, bejeweled, gliding elegantly through the restaurant and bar areas greeting guests, and ultimately settling in at the far corner of the thatched roof tiki bar with her favorite gin martini in hand . After Vera's passing at the age of 92 on Jan 23rd of 2007 her little slice of paradise reopened under new ownership as simply Vera's Beach Club. Although the new owners did leave some of Vera's South Pacific inspired collectables in and around the property, it's definitely become more of a Southern Maryland version of Red Eyes dock bar now, complete with live music concerts, bikini contests, and a haven for local biker crowds. A business has to make a profit, and keeping Vera's a post WWII Polynesian themed time capsule alive might have been a tough sell in 2014... But when I walk in to Vera's now and take a seat at the far end of the bar with my gin martini, dry, with 2 olives, and I look up at her usual 5:00 entrance time... I still half expect to see Vera's wisps of long silver hair and a flowing robe coming around the corner to greet everyone with a frail handshake and a smile...

Great view but food fairly average. Biggest problem was all the serving dishes were dirty. My water glaas had a huge lipstick stain. Didnt help my appetite. Probably a better place at night and if interested in cheap beers with a view.

It was our first visit to veras we went for the all you can eat Friday night buffet. I didn't know what to expect but it was very nice. It's very large inside and the seating area gets a little crowded but the room where the food is was kept stocked food was hot and everything was good. There's a large enough variety and it is 25.00. Our waitress was nice kept our drinks filled and our dirty plates off our table. We enjoyed our visit.

Is it weirdly small town? Yeah. Is that sort of ok? Sure. It's a lot like if your weirdest aunt ran a beach club. It's wonderously tacky, so bring your loudest, most screamingist bath suit and an appetite for sticky-sweet drinks. Fun game: while you're there, imagine it as a nudist resort. Enjoy!

I came here with my grandma, aunt, and cousins to take advantage of the lunch buffet. It was 2pm on a Saturday. We made a reservation, but it wasn't crowded at all. The buffet was advertised at one price, but when we arrived it was higher. Annoying, but not a deal-breaker, and still a good value. Our waitress came to take our drink order, and a few moments later a different waitress came to take our drink order. We told her that we'd given our order to the first waitress, and she said that waitress was very busy and had given our table to her. We gave her our order, and she left. Then the first waitress came back and brought our drinks. We went to the buffet, returned with our first plates, and the second waitress showed up with our drink order - all waters, so no big deal, but I felt bad for her that she had to do that extra work. My grandma was the only one who didn't get the buffet, and her food seemed to take a while. I brought her some corn bread and my cousin gave her some shrimp from the buffet because it was already late for lunchtime and she was hungry, and I was totally ready to defend this action to any disgruntled waitress who would demand that we pay the buffet price for her as well, but they didn't say anything which was very nice and even apologized for the delay with her order. The king crab legs were AMAZING, very meaty and not too difficult to crack. The oysters were big and buttery, and even the non-seafood sides were delicious. The corn bread was the best corn bread I have had for a very long time - warm and soft and not at all dry and crumbly. We decided we definitely need to bring my mom when she comes to visit, and hopefully then we'll get to sit outside and enjoy the beautiful view. Bottom line: delicious food, so-so service.

Not kid friendly on weekends. Especially on the docks. People doing shots and very mouthy. Have to find a new weekend lunch spot on the boat. Any suggestions?

Went here for the Friday night all-you-can-eat buffet. We waited 15 minutes to be seen by our server and it was downhill from there. At one point she knocked over my husband's drink and we had to ask her a second time to come back with a rag to clean it up off our table. I was glad there was a buffet otherwise I'd probably still be waiting for my meal. The crab legs were meaty and plentiful but the shrimp was overcooked. The tables around us were complaining about long wait times to get drinks and checks, so I know it wasn't a slow kitchen. We won't be back.

Really disappointing experience considering this place has a world of opportunity with such an awesome view and outdoor space. My husband and I went there to sit outside for brunch on a beautiful day. They opened at 11am and served brunch until 12. We got there at 11:45 and were told it was "too close to 12 to order brunch foods anymore" by our server. Ok.. We decided to start with some chicken nachos. They were beyond awful. The description in the menu had all of the items listed and then it came out covered in olives (not listed on menu) and neither of us like olives. It also was supposed to come with salsa, sour cream & guac - and none came. Had to ask for these twice. The chicken was 100% flavorless and I'm almost certain it was just Perdue chicken strips from a package. The chips were drowning in a cold, white flavorless cheese sauce. We both took a few bites and decided we couldn't have another. We reluctantly decided to order some fried shrimp and fries to share (how can you mess this up we thought). They have classic fried shrimp and coconut. We asked if they could do 1/2 of each. Server said she wasn't sure but would ask. We said if you can't we'll take just all coconut. What do you know - comes out all classic. They were rubbery and flavorless. The fries were cold, soggy and so greasy they looked wet. That was our last attempt at food. We also heard the table behind us ask if the orange crush was made with fresh orange juice - the server said "I don't know." So they ordered a beer. We hadn't seen our server in about 30 minutes, so my husband walked up to the bar to order another drink and asked if the orange crush was made with fresh orange juice, she said "yes" so he ordered two, and then watched her make it with "orange drink" from the soda gun and garnish with sliced oranges... Not quite "fresh orange juice". Still not having seen our server for now 45 minutes and being beyond ready for the check, we asked another server to find ours, and she eventually came out about another 15 minutes later.. All in all, this is an awesome location/view with huge potential, but a major disaster. They need to train their servers and bar tenders and get some new people in the kitchen who know how to cook and use seasoning.

Second time trying out the buffet here. For $25, you are getting pretty good value - lots of crab legs, so you don't run into a problem with people hoarding them as soon as they come out. Other seafood options include mussels, crawfish, shrimp, and others. Very good fried chicken, hush puppies, and corn, questionable sweet potatoes. Our waitress was prompt and kept clearing our dishes as needed. The only complaint I have here is their new seating policy. For Friday nights you now apparently need a reservation, for a two hour window from 4-6 or 7-9. We didn't know this and showed up at 6, but they were able to give us a "non-reserved" table and we had no further issues. You may want to call ahead and see what is going on before you show up.

Geneva and I enjoy the Winston's, a Motown revue, who they host on the second Friday of each month. During football season, they are having fried oysters and steamed shrimp at very reasonable prices at the bar. We greatly enjoyed those while we were working with Casey to set up our wedding on their beach this spring. This place has terrific views that can be enjoyed from just about anywhere in their restaurant. All in all, a fun place with good food and drink.

Breakfast buffet. My family has been coming to this restaurant for years and we have always had decent food and service. But this breakfast buffet was TERRIBLE. Perhaps because we got there at 10:30 and the breakfast buffet was almost over, but the creamed chipped beef had a layer of butter on top and it no longer looked as if it was creamy it looked like it had been eaten and put back. The eggs Benedict was so old there was nothing runny about the egg and the brick they called a biscuit they had it sitting on made it completely in edible. On top of the horrible food was the servers that had shorts on so short and so tight I thought I was gonna get a lap dance. Not quite what I want to see first thing in the morning with my cup of joe When we told the waitress how much we disliked it she told us that no one else had complained and that she had eaten it herself this morning. Then the manager comes over and continues to argue that they have not had many complaints. The 3 of us agreed that that was the worst way to deal with unhappy customers. So disappointing since we loved coming to this establishment for so long.

I think a lot of you just like to bitch and fuss about everything. I keep my boat at Vera's and have had breakfest, lunch and dinner there several times. Service and food was great. I've been coming to Vera's for 3 years now and will keep coming back. As for the rest of you, keep your mouth shut until you have truly been been there.

Not gourmet but great food and great service and a fabulous view! Had the Ruben and my husband had the salmon blt. Both were very good. We sat in the bar and the bartender was very attentive. Love this place and the history of Vera's. Come back every year for the oyster Fest and this might be best experience yet!

We really enjoy going here (especially on the boat). It is much better than many other options on the water. The food is pretty good and the view is great. Prices might be a tad high but I think it is worth it. There is a beach area for the kids to play in the sand/water. There are also decent specials like bloody mary Sundays.

I saw the huge tacky sign on Rt, 4 heading down to Solomons island and the pink flamingo called out to the beach bum in me and I had to check it out.... It is a long and twisted road down to Vera's but worth the drive. The view is incredible and the food was not to bad. A little pricey, but the view is worth it.

Came in by boat and stayed for 2 days. Rented the Villa for the weekend and was surprised at every turn. Yes, it is a bit tacky but the bikini contest was a nice surprise for my husband and sons. They are working hard to make it a destination location with a restaurant and bands on the weekends. The Villa is 5 separate rooms that can be rented individually with a swimming pool in the living room. The food at the restaurant was good and they told us that they recently revamped the menu to make it more consistent and will add more items as they become more accomplished. The bloody mary bar was a nice touch at breakfast. We will definately be coming back.

What! I can't believe I am the first to write a review...what luck. I do feel bad because I never actually ate there. Here's a little story that may interest anyone who may actually want to try Vera's My daughter and son-in-law, live in Calvert County and we have always been intrigued by this place. The run down, ramshackle location of old, with it's scary swimming pool and the legend of "Vera". We happened to see a story of New owners and the restaurant opening with all these specials and thought it would be our chance. Our son-in-law was skeptical to say the very least. So we were pleasantly surprised to see the place cleaned up and cheery (from the outside). Upon entering, you are hit with a smell, similar to Clorox mixed with old fish...(appetizing, huh?). The place is literally empty on Friday night at 7pm. Where are all the people, from all the cars in the lot? We are taken to our seats, which overlook a beautiful lake from huge glass windows. (can't be all bad!). Sit in our seats and you need a seat belt as they are so slippery you almost hit the floor. (varnish? grease?). The menus and the "specials" sheet of paper is grimy and spattered. We are still determined. So we sit and peruse the menu, and we sit, and we sit and we wait. Mind you, the place is nearly deserted. The server is filling the salt, sugar, and pepper at the other (empty) tables. So we have studied the menu, slid off the seats, been totally ignored and our little party of 4 proceed to exit the premises. NO ONE...says anything. We feel we were saved from certain dining disaster by the ghost of Vera. Now, my son-in-law can really say,"I told you so" and I will totally agree!

And that's being generous. Went for a late lunch, early dinner. Our waitress, while nice was slow maybe because it looked like she was spread pretty thin. I had the crab melt, it was cold and flavorless. Fries most likely would have been good but those were also cold. Husband got both options of wings and thought they were greasy and also flavorless. For the prices they charge, the food was more than bland, it was robbery.

My husband and I are regular patrons and applaud the owners for creating such a friendly, island like atmosphere for us to take our families and friends to. They have different events every weekend. Best pizza in town! (But they only sell it on friday nights.) Great specials each night and now open 7 days a week!! This establishment adds life to the neighborhood...KUDOS to the owners/management for making this place so enjoyable for all of us! Staff is friendly...events are well organized...clean and well decorated! A bit of something for everyone. We've had local crabs 3 times this season there - all three times they were fresh and heavy. They have a build your own burger...(my mouth is watering just writing this) offering pretzel buns and all sorts of toppings! The grounds are always kept neat and manicured. The beach bar has real palm trees that add to the island ambiance. They have a wide variety of entertainment...from country, motown, karaoke, acoustical guitarist, rock band to contemporary stuff that young people listen to. I can't say enough good things about this place. They have completely resurrected the old run down Vera's and used their vision to make a fun and diverse place for people of all ages to eat, drink and have fun! THANK YOU, VERA's! =)
