Cozy spot with great box dinners.

I've only ever had lunch from Matsu and I've been relatively pleased with the Sushi I have eaten from there. The lunch special is quite a deal and you can get 3 rolls for around ten bucks. I like their Shrimp Tempura Roll and their Spicy Tuna Roll is ok. I also enjoy their Fried Tofu appetizer. My husband likes their Sashimi Lunch special. I wouldn't say they have the best sushi around or the best service but they have a pretty good deal. I often look at their specialty rolls and it seems like their dinner prices are little high for the quality of sushi that they serve.

Matsu is quiet and cozy. Sometimes it's a little too quiet. Of course, the sushi is good and they have a good variety of specialty rolls. I usually get something with white tuna as it's delicious and almost always try a specialty roll. The New York roll is good; it has tuna, salmon, tempura flakes, topped with fish eggs, and another fish is in there but I can't remember what it is, I want to say yellow tail or red snapper. Also, and this gets me everytime, they leave their Valentines Day decorations up year round. They're not gaudy or over-the-top but definitely noticeable. So, my housemate and I, being the awesome bachelors we are, decided to go there for Valentines Day. The place was packed solid! We've never seen more than maybe 5 or 6 tables in use at a time. Valentines Day must be one of their best days of the year.

Great sushi and it is served incredibly fast. The food was very good quality. The service was fast in the beginning but it took awhile to get the bill so ask early if you are in a rush.

We really like this local place! Not bad for "shopping center" sushi! We went on a Sunday evening, spur of the moment, and were pleased with the "special" of the night, which was 2 rolls for $8.95. We selected a couple of different things - crazy tuna, avocado, and spicy tuna rolls (we like tuna!). We also ordered shrimp fried rice, which was delicious! Food was served pretty quickly, and everything was very good. Service was OK, not the best, but decent enough. Ambiance is a little dark, but fits the theme! We will go back, and I do love that they deliver locally!

A co-worker and I go to Matsu pretty regularly. The sushi is very fresh and tasty--most of the rolls are better than those I've had at more expensive places in DC. I usually get the lunch special (3 rolls and soup or salad for $9.95). This is an excellent deal for a filling meal. The shrimp tempura roll is especially good--they put avocado in the roll and have their own special sauce for it. The service at the bar is great--they remember me when I go and sometimes take my order directly at the bar. I highly recommend this place

Decided to check this place out for lunch. Ordered Maguro, Salmon and Scallop Nigiri. The Salmon was alright, but the Tuna was fishy and not fresh. The Scallop was just on the edge as well. When I told the chef behind the bar the tuna was not fresh, he proceeded to tell me it was fresh-it had just come in that day and that scent was the smell of the ocean. I don't doubt they received the fish that day, but that doesn't make it fresh. Then he went into a lengthy explanation about how when you first slice open a freshly caught tuna, it has a slightly fishy smell, but that it quickly dissipates. A Japanese friend from Okinawa tells me he is correct on that point-however, that hardly applies to the tuna inside their case-which I'm willing to bet is flash frozen-like most tuna. Anyway, just another Chinese run sushi restaurant in Maryland. The hunt for authentic, good quality Sushi continues. On top of that it was more expensive than the other places I've been to in the area and 1.95 for a cup of tea was pretty steep.

Not the most amazing customer service, but the sushi is good. Low prices, too. I head there once every 2 weeks or so for lunch. Choose any 2 sushi rolls for $7.95 at lunch during the week. Can't beat that.

Matsu is a nice little Japanese place hidden in Linthicum Heights. The lunch box specials are a great deal, the sushi is great, and the service very good. The handful of times I've gone the place has been clean, quiet and very enjoyable.

After my first try of the loop, I rewarded myself with some sushi. And I remembered it being great. This time after completing the loop, I was so damn proud of myself, I came back for an encore and was super disappointed. Super disappointed. I was elated they had a beef tataki. I ordered it again, and left half of my appetizer on the plate. It wasn't tender and the grissel wasn't removed from the meat. The slices were also thick which amplified this issue. Everything else was just...ok. And I mean the sushi. I didn't try anything cooked. After my next round of the loop, I'll reward myself with something else.

I've gone here countless times for their delicious lunch special. You really can't beat 3 rolls of sushi for $9.25. The tempura shrimp is my favorite, but you can't go wrong with any other rolls- I'm also partial to the BBQ Eel roll, but you can't go wrong with the spicy tuna/salmon, philladelphia rolls, or straightup tuna/salmon rolls. Their bento boxes are also very tasty for people that aren't as much of a sushi enthusiast. The service is always great and the sushi is good. Its not the best sushi I've ever had, but its consistently good. The price makes the deal difficult to pass up. I've even called ahead and picked up orders on multiple occasions. They're always spot-on with these pickup orders. I order complicated meals with 10+ people and have even had them box it into two sections- and there has never been any mistake with the order. With so many options I would expect there to be a hiccup or two every now or then, but they're on top of it (and the food is always ready when they say it will be ready).

This place is amazing. Lightning speed service and crazy good lunch specials. I hadn't even finished my salad before my food arrived on the table. Granted it was 2:00 and I had the place all to myself, but still...it happened. I had the 3 maki roll special. It came with the choice of soup or salad, all for 10 bucks. It was a lot of food too. They didn't skimp on the portions just because it was lunch. I really liked their shrimp tempura a lot. I will definitely become a regular here after today.

We were so excited when this place opened in the former nasty old Linthicum pharmacy. And our first few trips there were great, very fresh fish, good sushi rolls, and perfect slices of sashimi. Service did seem a bit "uncomfortable" though. Then it happened: as the four of us we sat there enjoying our sashimi boat, a roach fell on our table from the ceiling. Rather than make a scene, I just brushed it away as quickly as possible. But all I could think about was where's the next one. I warned my Mom the keep an eye on her purse so she didn't end up with a surprise guest. We've never been back since.

This place is consistently good for homestyle Japanese cusine- ie: not just sushi. The japanese food tastes like my Mother in Law made it. She cant scoff at the food here. And that says alot if you have an asian mother in law. Just saying.....

Bottom Line: Tucked away in a sad looking strip mall, Matsu surprises you with a cute interior, tasty sushi and attentive staff. Ok, so to be fair, I have only been here for lunch. Here is what has Matsu calling my name as the clock strikes noon: - Cute interior, clean, modern yet Japanese feeling. The restaurant is quiet at lunch time. - Wait staff looks adorable in their Kimonos and they are attentive - Sushi is tasty. Not the best sushi I've had but certainly yummy and an excellent value. - The lunch specials are a great deal. You can get two rolls and soup or salad for $9. (Not all rolls are part of the lunch special but basic rolls are.) - Service is fast at lunch.

Came and gave this place a try since the reviews seem OK. First of all, this place is not authentic Japanese for no greetings in Japanese what-so-ever. The waitresses are dressed in traditional gowns and other than that there's no service. The food was just OK. My son ordered tempura udon - the tempura was good and crispy - but the soup base was over peppered, and beside taste like pepper then there's no other taste. The sushi came OK. When we tried to ask to refill our green tea, the waitresses just stares outside of the window with her back leaning on the wall. We will never come back to this place.

2.5 nope, not rounding up this time..... Alrighty then, located in a small strip mall type of place, right across from I believe a Exxon gas station. The restaurant is located on the end of the strip. There wasn't any lighting in the signage so I had to look, since it was quite dark. Ambiance: Pretty chill, quaint location, there were all of four other people besides myself. Appeared to be clean. Service: It was okay. My initial server was unable to communicate with me when I asked her questions about the menu. The other gent that helped me was helpful enough, but he had this tinge of pushiness underneath it all. It irked me a bit. Food: I sat at the bar, and I swear this is my first sushi experience that didn't come with a salad or soup with a sushi purchase. I thought everyone got that. Ah well. So I ordered a salmon hand roll and the Matsu special roll. I figure, you can't really mess up a hand roll, right? It was good, wish it had a bit more salmon in it though. Regarding the Matsu special roll, it was just okay. The roll consisted of crab and cucumber on the inside with eel, yellow tail, and two types of fish eggs on the top. In looking over the menu I wasn't particularly blown away by anything, plus I didn't see that three roll special that folk were talking about, so I just stopped eating and left. When I'm underwhelmed that is NOT a good thing. I mean, I LOVE food, it makes me happy! Can't say that I'd venture to go back.

Ordered off lunch menu 3 rolls combo - $9.25 Spicy salmon roll Spicy tuna roll Shrimp tempura roll Beef teriyaki bento box - $9.50 Quality - 2 stars - I don't like it when the rolls are made of chopped salmon/tuna. This place took it to a whole new level. The fish was so ground up that it had a mushy texture. Everything else was just okay. Service - 3 stars - waitress never checked on us. Ambiance - 4 stars - it's a nice, clean restaurant. Don't want to be bias but the sushi chefs were not Japanese - they were speaking Mandarin. This place is not as authentic as it appears. The best thing about this place is the value. Lunch only though, they mark the dinner menu up quite a bit.

This was an impulse choice, since I was in the area. I love sushi - the trendy and the small places. This is a small place, and even for a Friday night it was quiet. The sushi list was extensive, and my friend and I sampled several dishes. The Love Roll appears to be a signature dish, and for good reason, it is divine. The volcano roll is also wonderful and packs a little bit of a bite. The service was great, as well . For those not familiar, please always remember to tip the sushi chefs on the way out the door, it is considered polite in sushi bars. You will see a tip jar on top of their sushi case. If you are in the area, give it try and definitely, definitely try the Love Roll.

I have been going to Matsu for about 6 years and they never disappoint. It is a little off the beaten path in Linthicum but a quality sushi place nonetheless. Their miso soup is excellent and their sushi is always fresh. Their lunch deals are great and the service has always been excellent.

It's really surprising that a japanese restaurant would be located in this linthicum plaza! But, several co-workers speak high of this place, so i wanted to give it a go. The interior is nice and clean, and the employees courteous. I ordered a shrimp tempura bento box. The shrimp tempura was very good as well as the other items that came (shumai, tempura vegetables, california rolls, rice, and miso soup). I really had no complaints, though for some reason I did not feel entirely satisfied after leaving. That might be a good thing since that means the meal was light, but nothing that made me think "wow, that really tasted spectacular". However, all was good b/c after the meal I went next door to Keller's Donuts and got myself a chocolate coconut donuts for dessert!

Not bad little spot tucked in Linthicum Heights. Sushi rolls were good, just like other decent sushi spots. My family had bento style plates with katsu and they enjoyed it. Service was fine as we had a table of 10 and that was pushing it in this smaller restaurant.

I had to take away two stars. they charge .95 for a small container half way full of spicy mayo, which means I have to get two for it to be enough for my sushi. I come here all the time, so at some point I would think they would just fill up the container so i only have to buy one (asked they said it was against store policy), or throw it in for free. I love the shrimp tempura! They have 3 rolls for 9.25 with soup or salad from 11-3pm and 3 rolls with soup or salad for 14.95 after 3pm Tuesday- Saturday BEST DEAL EVER!! The parking isn't good though in this hoping center.

The best place around, they got fresh fish, the service is good and price is fair.

Food was good. Watched them make the sushi. I ordered the sushi deluxe dinner. It was good. I do not believe the fish was as fresh as it could have been seems how they took 2 fillets out of plastic sealed bags. All and all it was good and I would make a return visit.

Went here again and I must say it keeps getting better. Cozy place for some decent sushi. The atmosphere is cozy and simple. I found the staff to be nice and they had a great sense of humor. The wine list is a little weak but we can live with that. I would definitely go here again and would say for the money it pretty good. The sashimi was not as fresh as I like it, but the sushi was pretty good. I give the place a 3.5. Rb

This place is not over the top..... it is small and quaint. Cute decor. Great lunch specials and good food. The spicy tuna roll tasted a little off.... more spicy as in hot wings, rather than spicy in a good way. A little overkill. Maybe it was just an off day.... unsure. I still like Tokyo Sushi better :)

My brother arrived at BWI, returning home from 7 months in Afghanistan. We met him at the airport and the only thing he wanted was SUSHI. I had found this restaurant during the week while looking for a place that we could go in order to fulfill his request. My brother and my father both LOVE sushi and know good quality when they find it. Not only did we eat there on Friday night and enjoy, but we returned on Saturday for another round of sushi and chicken/beef teriyaki. I would recommend this restaurant anytime and would definitely re-visit if I am ever in the area again!

I can't say anything else about what's on the menu except for the sushi. The sushi here is probably some of the best I've had. It's a small place, very cozy and quiet as said before. If your don't really know the area you wouldn't notice it is here but a place that needs to be tried out if your a sushi fan like myself. I would like to try the other menu items but every time I'm here I just have to get the sushi, so many options to choose from. Try Matsu out, you won't be disappointed.

Love this place... Close to home and the sushi is pretty good!

I went here based on the recommendations of Yelp. Unfortunately, I do not think that the restaurant was nearly as good as I was led to believe. I started with a glass of water, which was nasty. The water was nasty. Not a good way to start. I ordered the chicken teriyaki bento box lunch. The chicken teriyaki was good and the broccoli was fresh. The rice was okay. Ah, hell, the food was good. But the wasabi could have been a bit fresher. I also ordered hot green tea to make up for the water and that wasn't much better. The employees there were very nice, service was quick, and the restaurant was very clean.

Go here for the sushi, especially the rolls. The tempura shrimp is TO DIE FOR. My wife and I came here with our friend, who is a proud regular customer of this restaurant. I don't agree with other reviewers saying this place is expensive. I think it's reasonably priced for quality sushi. Between the two of us, my wife and I ordered 5 roll dishes, water, and tea, and with a 15% tip, we paid $43. That's not bad. I do agree with other reviewers on the slow service, however. We were in no hurry, so we didn't mind, but it did take us a long time to find our waitress to ask for refills on our water at one point. However, overall, this was a wonderful find, so I suggest people try it out.

I went here with coworkers this past Friday and I have to tell you that I was not really impressed. If you go during lunch hour and if you end up having to wait, just know that there isn't very much room for you to wait inside so you might end up having to wait outside. Waiting outside is not a problem during the warm season but if you are like me, I would not want to be standing outside in the cold for 10 to 15 minutes until a table is ready. The decor is okay. Nothing fancy and nothing to make it stand out. The service is friendly and prompt. When it comes to sushi, if you are in a rush, my advice would be to eat some place else since it does take them awhile to make a sushi order. Most of us at the table had the bento box. The bento box comes with a choice of meat, miso soup, fried fish balls and a California roll. I happened to choose the chicken teriyaki for my meat. I am not an avid sushi eater nor do I eat a lot of Japanese food but I do know that the times I have had it at other places were times that I liked better. Never the less, the bento box here was okay. The chicken was ok, I think it could have had a little more flavor but that is my opinion, the California roll was what I expected, the fish balls...um...different and the miso soup was good. Actually, I am not a huge fan of miso soup but this was probably the best miso I have ever tasted. It was very tasty and I could have had another bowl. If you are looking for something Asian in this area to try, other than Chinese food, then try this place out. To some this place might be very good and wonderful and from looking at the other reviews that people have given this place, they all seem to like it a lot better than I do. A review is just an opinion so give this place a try so you can decide on your own.

This place is a nice little stop in an area that wouldn't seem to have great food. The caveat is that it is not run by Japanese people, which was strange, but didn't seem to affect the good food. The service was quick and the lunch was delicious. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping in!

    (4)
  • Cara W.

Decent lunch specials and reasonably quick. Note: $10 credit card minimum, and most lunch specials are less than that...order a drink or some edamame and split with your table to get you over the top. They are always willing to do a straight split of the check, which is helpful when lunching w/ colleagues.

Matsu is a decent little Japanese restaurant in Linthicum, which desperately needs more places like this. The menu is fairly comprehensive, with sushi, soup, noodle dishes, and bento boxes all represented. The thing that makes Matsu stand out is their quality-to-price ratio for lunch. Most dishes fall under $10, with the sushi/sashimi combos edging to the $13 range. They give you a lot of food for your money, too. I had the yaki soba with chicken; delicious and reminiscent of what I had spending a couple of years growing up in Okinawa. My lunch buddy had the sushi/sashimi combo, which had the standard array of tuna, salmon, fatty tuna sashimi with a spicy tuna roll. We also had the gyoza, which were... gyoza. Nothing to write home about, but good. Service was impeccable. The decor is, well, standard Japanese restaurant decor. The place is clean, too. It's also apparently not a mystery - it filled up pretty good by 12:00. So, now we have another place to put in our lunch rotation. If only someone would open a Vietnamese place somewhere nearby...

Smack down, this is the best sushi I have had in a long, long time. Superb here. I travel a bit, and where ever I am, I seek out sushi. Sometimes I come here to Yelp. Sometimes I just rely on Google to let me know what's nearby. I came to Matsu as it is the closest sushi restaurant to my hotel. Well, I'm telling you now: you'll get the best sushi if you drive here, no matter where you're starting out. If you're within an hour, you'll find it worth the while. Have I raved enough? Okay, I came for sushi. Nothing more. Nothing less. I had four rolls: cucumber, tuna, Philadelphia, and spicy yellow tail. The cucumber and the tuna were both wrapped traditionally (rice on the inside). The other two rolls were Americanized with the rice on the outside. The first thing that struck me was the ratio of rice to fish. It's perfect. Sometimes the rice is overwhelming; other times it's so little as to be scimpy. Here at matsu the balance was on the money. The fish was extremely fresh. The color was perfect. The texture was firm but on biting felt as if it was melting in my mouth. I know that's cliched, but I don't know how else to describe it. I've only started eating Philadelphia rolls. My eldest son presented me with half a roll recently (leftovers from his trip to Katana's in Norfolk, Virginia), and who am I to pass up on free, high quality, usually delicious tasting sushi? But, really, cream cheese along with the fish? Anyway, the balance between cream cheese and tuna meat was perfect. And the cream cheese was smooth and cool and crisp, and with each bite the tuna and the cheese melded as one. So tonight was my fourth Philly roll ever, and it is number one. The other thing of note was the service. It was perfect. The waitresses were more than extremely attentive; they anticipated my needs. I know; that, too, sounds cliched, but it's true. Total cost was $19 and change; call it $20. I was super ecstatic and left a big tip on the table and dropped a couple in the bowl on the way out. Totally reasonable cost. Anyway, there you have it. I'll be eating at Matsu every evening this week. Drop by, and perhaps I'll be there.

I go here once a week. Great place for Japanese fare. The staff are friendly and very attentive. We get our food really quick. They have a sushi bar if this is your main interest. I like Sushi and I have found their servings to be good. Particularly like the eel maki. Order the multiple roll selections or order by the piece. I do like their Bento boxes. Good selection and I like the Sushi and Salmon bentos best. THe bentos come with either Miso soup or salad. The Udon dishes take a little longer to prepare so if you go in a group these would be the last to be served. They have a shrimp rice dish that is very good. Yes, you can get Sake if you like. I highly recommend Matsu.

I was staying nearby at a hotel by BWI on business, and was looking for some sushi. I'm from New Jersey, and I've eaten at a lot of sushi places from NYC to Philly. Matsu was decent. I've had much better sushi in strip mall sushi places in NJ near home. I was expecting some darn good sushi but it was just decent but didn't wow me in any way. I had the sushi deluxe and opted to pay a bit extra to get alaska roll instead of tuna. Alaska roll was great. Selection of fish for sushi platter was just OK - Salmon, tuna, snapper, etc.. No Masago, no eel, no shrimp, which is what I usually see. Salmon was good but tuna was grainy and the other fish was just OK. Service was prompt as I was sitting at the sushi bar. Overall - I give it a decent rating - it's above "supermarket sushi" but don't expect anything amazing.

This is a cozy restaurant in a strip mall. You start your meal off with a hot towel to clean your hands. The kids thought it was awesome. We started with miso soup, which was awesome. The sushi we ordered was spider rolls, spicy tuna, soft shell crab rolls, shrimp tempura rolls and california rolls. And we also got the two piece tuna sushi. It was all very good but our favorite was the spicy tuna. The noodles we ordered was Yaki Soba, Nabi Yaki Soba, and Tempura Soba. The Yaki Soba was very good but the Nabi Yaki and Tempura were bland and needed lost of hot sauce and soy sauce to give it flavor. The Yaki would be ordered again but not the other two. They were too bland. At first the waitress was very attentive and then she seemed to forget about us. She didn't come to our table for about 20 minutes and we needed refills on our water. It was also a little hard to get her attention. Near the door they have a basket of origami and the kids were able to pick one up. They thought that was neat. Overall, it was a positive experience. I gave 3 stars because I felt the quality of the food wasn't worth the price. If it had been cheaper I would given it 4 stars.

One of the best sushi/sashima places I've enjoyed. The restaurant is tucked into a strip mall but I think it is ready to break out onto a larger place. I like the cozy atmosphere and personal attention by the owner and staff. I try to stop by here whenever I am in town. The food is great and the price is right.

The location is tucked away in a strip mall. However, the sushi is excellent. Always fresh fish, friendly staff, generous portions, and quick service. Check the lunch specials (served 11 AM - 3 PM) for great deals!

Wow, I can't believe I haven't done a review for this. Glen Burnie is STARVED for sushi places and not only does this fulfill a huge gap, it does so beyond the minimum requirements. The service is stupendous. The wait staff is always super-friendly to our little girl. We've been taking her there since she was a baby, and now she's 2.5. Once, my husband and daughter were both sick, so I picked up a huge order and they gave us a Japanese soda. The taste wasn't that great, but how you open is so different from a US bottle. You have to use a plastic tab on the top to push a marble through into the bottle and it stays at the top because the neck is too narrow. I thought it was really neat to share something new with us. The food is so good! I love the sushi specials. I've tried a variety of them and have loved them all. She loves sushi with just tobiko (flying fish roe) and though it's not on the menu, we've been able to ask for it with no problem. We usually get her the chicken udon (which is so big, we take it home.) But tonight, she almost ate all of my husband's fried rice. We are so glad that we don't have to go all the way out to Columbia to find spectacular sushi. The one- and two-star reviews are by people that expect sushi to be cheap and on fire (not sure how else sushi is supposed to impress and surprise you), or by people that just eat chicken teriyaki.

My mom dragged me here on a whim and I was very hesitant. I was fearful of 'raw fish'. It actually took me a year of getting just bento boxes to finally buckle down and try the raw stuff. I waited too long! It was delicious. We still go there even now. The food is always exceptional, along with the customer service. We have had maybe ONE slow visit out of the dozens of times we have been there. We will forever be returning, as long as they stay in business.

Horrible food. After reading these good reviews, it sounded great, something nice to finally have on this trip. Wrong. I'm not sure if ownership has changed but the food is now HORRIBLE. I ordered a Beef Teriyaki & Shrimp Tempura Bento box. The Tempura had shrimp about as small as cocktail shrimp inside batter that was not at all flaky and about 3 times as thick as it should have been, also very greasy taste to it. It looked like it came out of a freezer bag. The beef teriyaki was overcooked, flavorless, and rubbery, as if it was cooked in a microwave, also from a freezer bag. The miso soup was clearly from a dehydrated bag (if you know what re-hydrated tofu is like). The bento box also came with a california roll, also HORRIBLE. Fake crab sticks, the avocado was watery mush, and the cucumber was almost chewy. I couldn't even finish one piece. I also unfortunately ordered yellowtail and salmon nigiri. BIG MISTAKE. The fish was horrid. I've honestly had much, much better fish at a $15 all you can eat sushi joint in the landlocked state of Utah. It was old, gritty textured, clearly frozen for too long, and sitting after, for too long. 2 things. I'm Japanese, I know what Japanese food is supposed to be. This was NOT it. There were asians there, however, they were all speaking Chinese. Every Japanese restaurant run by Korean's or Chinese I've ever been to is, well, TERRIBLE. This was no exception. If you go to a restaurant and the staff isn't speaking Japanese or English, well, just go back out the door somewhere else. I should have. Then after, I went to Wendy's and had a better meal since I couldn't eat the garbage I was served at Matsu. I've never reviewed a restaurant but i felt compelled to do it this time with all the good reviews. I hope this keeps someone from wasting their money and having a terrible meal like I just did. I would have been better off just spending $5 at Wendy's.

Overpriced and unimaginative. Had lunch there: tea, age tofu, 2 pieces unagi sushi, 4 pieces toro sushi= $28 !!! To be fair, service is fine, and someone has made an effort to give the place ambiance.

Don't go to a sushi place and order beef teriyaki and expect perfection please. I've never waited a second to be seated for lunch, and I haven't seen others wait either. The sushi at Matsu is always fresh and the service is always prompt and friendly. The folks from my office frequent Matsu for good reason, it's reliably good. Try the Crazy Tuna Roll, Crazy Salmon Roll, Honey Roll, Out of Control Roll and ask if there are any rolls not on the menu. The L2 or L3 lunch specials are yummy and filling. Matsu isn't fine dining, but it's a solid choice for sushi.

I didn't try anything adventurous, just the chicken teriyaki bento box lunch special. It was dark meat scraps, but could have been worse considering the low price. There seems to be a high correlation between price and quality at Japanese restaurants.

What a great restaurant! I was craving sushi on a recent business trip and this place did the trick. I had the sushi deluxe which came with California rolls and the usual nigiri items. The fish was nice and fresh and had a good flavor to it. The wasabi was nice and strong and made for a perfect compliment to the meal. The service is atypical from the surliness found in this area. They are attentive, polite, and even *gasp* make eye contact with you. Everything other reviewers said about the owner is true. I got the distinct impression that he was genuinely happy to have me there. The only negative thing is that they have a minimum amount for credit card purchases. Given the typical cost of sushi this isn't too much of a problem though.

Good sushi, but I've had better when it comes to standard rolls. Their chef special rolls are very good but pricey. The owner is very nice, though one of the waitresses is a bit on the snooty side. I haven't had any issues when coming to Matsu. Though I will say that the only thing I like their are their chef special rolls. Their regular sushi will satisfy a craving and they have a great roll combo lunch special, but it's not as good as other places. I've had their dinner entrees a few times and I wasn't too impressed. Their yakisoba tasted like stir-fry ramen noodles that you can get at the grocery store for $1.50. The tempura isn't panko crumb tempura. It's batter tempura which soaks up a lot of oil when frying. I prefer panko since it's lighter. The Bento boxes are just OK. No WOW factor to it and I've tasted better. Other than that, it's a cute little environment in a nice little small town area. I come here every now and then with friends for lunch. It's a good little spot for sushi, but not my top pick.

The last visit left me less enthusiastic about Matsu. The food was not as good, the tempura was soggy instead of crisp, and this time they charged $5 for hot tea! What Japanese restaurant does that? Unheard of. There are tons of Japanese restaurants in the area, surely there must be a good one out there. Will keep looking! Update - 6-2013 Finally found the *good* Japanese restaurant we had been seeking, Sushi King in Columbia is our Sushi Salvation!!

Best Sushi around! Go during lunch and get 3 rolls for 9 bucks. Can't beat that!

Great Japanese food, good for the price. I don't eat sushi, so I can't comment on that, but their tonkatsu and tempura are right on the money in terms authenticity and good taste. Their teriyaki and similar dishes are particularly good, often served on sizzling platters, and their yakisoba has a good flavor. My only complaint about this place is that their yakisoba is yaki-ramen. No soba noodles! The portions are large enough, and the decor is pleasant. My personal favorite meal is their tonkatsu with a Kirin Ichiban to wash it down. Give it a try!

Not sure I should even give 1 star. The sushi was not good. The edamame tasted like dirt. Every maki roll tasted the same, like cat food. Not impressed at all. Would not recommend.

Best sushi I have had to date! Stopped by on a whim as out of towners. We had take out regretting we did due to a well put together interior greeting us I wish we had stayed. Presentation to go, PHENOMENAL! Spot on rolls, great prices if anything maybe a touch less of cream cheese on the Tiger Roll.

I don't think the people of Linthicum know what real sushi is, the quality of sushi here is like sushi from the grocery store. The ambiance is pretty nice though, and service is ok, my waiter checked on us once...but it's lunch time, so I didn't have any high expectations.

Update: Matsu is still as quite as it ever has which is relaxing while enjoying your meal. The interior has had some updates, newly hanging lights and pictures have been added. They also took down some of the window covers from the upper part to let more light in. Sushi before was fair, but has much improved. The rolls were good sized, on the larger side for the normal rolls. Fish was fresh and so were the other ingredients. My favorite was the fancy tuna. Seared tuna on top, inside spicy tuna with 'special sauce' very good and not too expensive. Service is still friendly, and helpful. 4 stars!

Have been here a few times and absolutely LOVE their sushi. The rolls average $15 apiece, average price, but above average in size. Visited with some friends yesterday, (7/26), and was shocked by the horrible service we received. We were not behaving in a loud or obnoxious manner, so we were absolutely perplexed by the way in which we treated. One of the servers actually rolled her eyes at us! As this is the first time we have ever been treated as such here, we'll go back... once... and hope this was a huge fluke.

I LOVE MATSU. Probably ordered from here in the.. idk, 40+ times range. There sushi is fresh and delicious. The shrimp tempaura roll is one of my favorites, right next to the spicy tuna which is the BEST I have EVER had and can't find anything that beats it.

Why is Japanese food for example a simple fried breaded chicken or pork (katsu) is pricier than a chinese lunch? At $8, I don't think a small rice, small soup, and a piece of pork justified that price; it is pretty simple to prepare and cook. I know this is the going price of a usual Japanese dish somewhere in the city but should not in this location. So for that reason, I will veto it out.

  • H H.

Food was good. Watched them make the sushi. I ordered the sushi deluxe dinner. It was good. I do not believe the fish was as fresh as it could have been seems how they took 2 fillets out of plastic sealed bags. All and all it was good and I would make a return visit.

Rb

4 stars!

Not sure I should even give 1 star. The sushi was not good. The edamame tasted like dirt. Every maki roll tasted the same, like cat food. Not impressed at all. Would not recommend.

Food was good. Watched them make the sushi. I ordered the sushi deluxe dinner. It was good. I do not believe the fish was as fresh as it could have been seems how they took 2 fillets out of plastic sealed bags. All and all it was good and I would make a return visit.

This place is a nice little stop in an area that wouldn't seem to have great food. The caveat is that it is not run by Japanese people, which was strange, but didn't seem to affect the good food. The service was quick and the lunch was delicious. If you are in the area, I would definitely recommend stopping in!

Decent lunch specials and reasonably quick. Note: $10 credit card minimum, and most lunch specials are less than that...order a drink or some edamame and split with your table to get you over the top. They are always willing to do a straight split of the check, which is helpful when lunching w/ colleagues.

Rb
