How is it that I've lived in Frederick for almost 10 years and I've never heard of this place? I was talking to a friend the other day about Fractured Prune donuts and she said that nothing will ever compare to "the donut place in Jefferson". I looked it up and, sure enough, it does exist. Jefferson is so small; you could literally follow you nose and find this place; the delicious smells permeate the entire neighborhood. The shop is teeny-tiny, but it's packed with just about every baked good imaginable and it was so hard to leave without buying one of everything. In addition to an entire display case of donuts, they have an unbelievable assortment cupcakes, cakes, cookies, danishes, pies, breads, rolls and whoopie pies. The donuts were AMAZING. I got a powdered jelly donut and a glazed knot. The glazed knot was so fresh, it disintegrated in my mouth. The jelly donut was crisp on the outside and light and airy inside with a generous amount of filling that had actual raspberry seeds in it, unlike that thick, gloppy mystery goo that you find in most grocery store donuts. (note...the powdered donut is not recommended for in-car consumption. I was covered in powdered sugar from head to toe by the time we got home) We will definitely be back. I've heard good things about Hemp's Meats too and they share the same parking lot. We went on a Sunday; the pastry shop was open, but the meat market was closed. We'll have to check it out on a Saturday I guess.

So disappointed today! Special treats are rare.....so, we found ourselves up in Jefferson, MD today and stepped into the Jefferson Pastry Shoppe. We both ordered the Mini Turtle Cakes. Horrible!. Outside icing and caramel tasted artificial and the chocolate cake inside had no hint of sweetness at all. BIG disappointment!

The only thing I've eaten here is their donuts. Because I can't resist them. Ok, just kidding. I've had a couple other things, bread and something else. I can't remember. It was a couple of years ago. Their donuts are consistently the best I've had in Maryland. I wish the coffee here was of superior quality, though.

I was looking for a local bakery and this seemed to be one of the closest ones not found inside a grocery store. I ordered a dozen assorted donuts and found them to be pretty good, but not necessarily fresh. Even though I got there less than an hour after they opened many of the donuts did not appear to be recently made. They were not stale -- just not from this morning's batch. Despite that the raspberry jelly donuts and crullers were extremely good and I would definitely order them again. Overall I could have saved myself some time and just stopped off at the grocery, where at least their run-of-the-mill offerings were newly baked.

Doesn't look like much from the outside, but you will be floored by the goodies inside. Cakes, cookies, bread, pastries, pies, and of course donuts. The donuts are excellent, and a shining example of how to do it right. The cakes and cookies are really good. I haven't had anything here that was less than great and sometimes out of this world. The hours are pretty accessible and most everything is reasonable price wise. I haven't gotten anything that was less than fresh. If you have a sweet tooth, this is a great place to satisfy it.

I've finally found a donut shop in Frederick. I moved here a couple years ago and thought it crazy that there weren't any decent family-owned donut shops in town. Heard about Jefferson Pastry Shoppe and decided to try it out. We live in downtown Frederick and it took us exactly 10 minutes door to door. Worth the very short drive! The place smells amazing and you may not want to ever leave. The donut prices are very reasonable (we paid $4 for a half dozen - side note they have a $10 CC minimum). These donuts are what every donut should be. Fresh, sweet (but not overly so), the glazed portions cracking off and the chocolate oozing down the sides. They taste light and lovely. If you've only ever had Dunkin or Krispy Kreme, you're in for a treat. I look forward to making more trips to the Shoppe and trying out the pastries, cakes (and of course getting more donuts!).

This little country bakery is probably the best keep secret in the whole area - about 15 minutes outside of frederick, tucked away in sleepy little jefferson right beside hemp's meat market. The shop itself is tiny, but its stuffed to the brim with fresh baked breads and rolls, homemade donuts of all kinds, eclairs, danishes, cupcakes, cakes, crumb cake, muffins, pies and cookies. Its almost a little overwhelming - I really have to fight to urge to request they just give me one of everything. Their cake and cupcakes - especially the red velvet cupcakes, are AMAZING - moist and flavorful, with perfect icing -- not overly sweet or fake and gritty tasting, just amazingly creamy and delicious. It blows all those fancy 4 dollar cupcake boutiques out of the water. They do made to order cakes and cake decorating i hear too, though I've never had one. My dad swears by their cookies - especially the oatmeal raisin. I always try to remember to grab him a couple when I stop in, or I never hear the end of it. :P My mom adores the apple crumb cake, which is sold in HUGE slices. They also have regular crumb cake, cinnamon pecan, and raspberry. I've got a soft spot for their doughnuts, especially the pastry cream filled chocolate ones. It really makes the calories you spent on that dunkin donuts version not even remotely worth it in comparison. Luckily for my waistline, their hours are a little erratic -- closed on mondays and tuesdays, open from 6 am to 5 pm wednesday through friday, 6 to 3 on saturdays, and 7 to 1 on sundays.

I got oatmeal raisin cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and a chocolate cupcake. The cookies were dry and fairly tasteless, and the cupcake was completely average. I could probably have easily made a better one at home. The total for 4 cookies and a cupcake was less than $4, however, so that's the only really good reason to go here unless you live in Jefferson.
