Visited here with some friends and it is stunning. This place is owned by the same person who owns the Milton Inn in Sparks, MD. So if you're used to that level of sophistication and flavor, this is your place ! We ordered the lamb and crab cakes , which were fabulous. The star of the meal was the incredible cheese plate - the harmony of the flavors (homemade jam, bleu cheese brie, spiced honey) was mind blowing ! We finished the night off with truffle torte and the bread pudding specialty. Overall, I definitely think well be returning.
Food here is exceptional, especially for Howard County. There are a couple of other places I need to try, but this is surely one of the best restaurants in the county. If you're looking for elegant American/European fare, you can't go wrong here, as long as you can afford it. Went on a Groupon, so that eased some of the pain, but still a very expensive meal. Sometimes, though, you get what you pay for -- and the food is as good as the prices are high. We ate off the tasting menu, which offers smaller portions at a slight discount. Probably a better deal if you focus on the pricier entrees -- but the portions are small. If you're looking at the less expensive appetizers and entrees, I recommend splurging on full portions for a few dollars more. I'd recommend dishes, but they were going to rework the menu the next day. Besides, everything here is first-rate. The noise level is generally very low, except for the obnoxious party of 6 that sat next to our table midway through our dinner. Turns out there are privileged, prejudiced, clueless, loud rich people in Howard County, but that's another story. Survey asked about a TV -- there is one in the bar, but no sound. Pleasant jazz pumped into the restaurant.
It pains me to share negative feedback on what has the potential to be a lovely, locally-owned, special event kind of restaurant. But for our family last night, The Highland Inn was a series of disappointments: The Food--was not good. My "seasonal" and server recommended, pork tenderloin was not tender, nor was a piece of loin. It was sliced, dry and charred. The sides, apple cubes and braised red cabbage tasted like the Mrs. Smith's brand in a jar I've seen at Safeway. There was nothing distinctive, or made-to-order about them. My sister's beef cheek was mostly fat, the Mahi-Mahi smelled "fishy" (ie: not fresh) and the creamer that came with our coffee at the end of the meal curdled in my mother's mug. The Service--was insufficient, inexperienced and weirdly robotic. When, before appetizers, I attempted to order a salad for my 10 year old, I was corrected and told that would have to wait until the proper course. (Really?) The Prices--we were celebrating a milestone birthday, and so were prepared to spend some cash. But when the bill arrived, over $1,000 for 14 adults and 6 children, we were flabbergasted. Yes, the kid's macaroni and cheese was delicious, but $17/serving? Outrageous. We live in challenging financial times and most restaurants offer corporate food. I was really looking forward to supporting and enjoying a lovely meal in a hometown, my hometown, establishment. Sorry, Highland Inn, you blew it for this HoCo girl. I won't be back.

Not sure of all of the negative reviews on this one. The atmosphere is pretty good. They have fantastic specials on glasses of wine(Glasses of a tasty Malbec for $4). They provide good hamburgers including Bison, which is a rare treat. I would much rather get a bison burger from this small restaurant and bar than Looney's up the street. Looney's, which does a ton of business, makes garbage food. I will be going here instead of Looney's for happy hour with coworkers. Better prices and better food. Not sure why people don't like it. I think it is quaint.
Decent drink specials and a small town bar atmosphere and very laid back. If you're looking for a nice hangout bar, this would be a good place to check out. It is kind of hidden so the location might hurt the reviews a little.
My fiancée and I decided to try out Twist and Turn for lunch yesterday after his coworkers gave the place rave reviews.. We don't know what they were talking about because our meal was nothing to write home about. While the service was very good, but the food was just ok (certainly not worth the price we paid). Can't speak for the bar because neither one of us really drink. I had the steak wrap; the Twist mayo is a little over-spiced for my taste. He had a simple burger with sweet potato fries (which were very soggy). I WILL say their homemade potato chips were very good, as were the mozzarella sticks (I think they're called Half Moons) and the marinara sauce. But for what we paid, we could have gone to our favorite pool hall, had a better meal and played a couple rounds of pool. We won't be going back to the Twist & Turn Tavern..
