I can't stop thinking about their PIZZA. I first went out and tried this in 2002. It was so juicy! Sweet sauce, cheese that is partly soft and chewy and also crispy! So good. I haven't been back, though a few years later I went out to Vevey, Switzerland and had a pizza at a nice outdoor cafe. Same exact pizza! I couldn't believe it. So, in a sense I've had it twice. I cannot believe there are people out there that don't enjoy this square pizza pie. Unfortunately I live in SF, CA so it isn't easy for me to get to this location, but if there is someone so kind to private message me, we could figure out an arrangement to get this shipped out to me overnight in a vacuum sealed bag. In return I can send you some authentic San Francisco sour dough! (no joke) And lastly, could you yelpers (I'm looking at you Jim's) at least post up some pictures of the pizza so I can at least look at it instead of that lousy picture of the restaurants sign? Thanks.

I have a friend who really really likes this place so I gave them 2 stars. I don't like the pizza which is what most people go on about. Service has been fine for me for the kind of place that it is.

I decided to write a review after my last time eating here. I have only been a few times and only if I am in the area and I want a quick beer. The pizza was really good the first time I ate it and the second would've been just as good but there was an overload of sauce on it, but aside from that absolutely no complaints...the anchovies were really good and fresh! I believe our bartender was Jenna? and she was a sweetheart! Her parents are very lucky to have her helping out and the interaction between her brother and her was amazing...it's so good to see a family business doing well and everyone getting along. On another note they should get the sign out front fixed and maybe that would bring results!

Dear first reviewer, did you even try the pizza? Sincerely, Gentleman Jim's fan! Listen - I can't say much about any of the other food at Gentleman Jim's, because i was RAISED eating their pizza, and ONLY the pizza. By far, Gentleman Jim's knocks Ledo's off their socks!!! Order the pepperoni and sausage combo and you won't be sorry AT ALL. Enjoy!

Best pizza in all of Maryland, hands-down. I've enjoyed it for years, Dad brought it home when we were kids. Sweet sauce, square, flaky crust. Sausage and pepperoni is where it's at. This is a Montgomery County landmark of sorts, with a "Gaithersburg Country" interior.. One of a kind, great place for casual business. For all the United (air) miles maniacs out there, they're a 10x point affiliate (for any dollar spent). Odd, but I always go for it.

Pizza is amazing but it's an acquired taste so it might take a few times for you to fall in love with it. Happy hour prices are great. The servers are real people who will tell you like it is. They're not sugar-coated chain restaurant clones who are desperately trying to upsell. This is what I like about this staff. Ask for honey mustard with your fries. Love this place!!!

We went in for pizza and a sandwich tonight. BJ was our server. The first thing I noticed was BJ's overwhelming perfume. I really found it offensive. My hubby ordered a Ruben and I got a small pizza. Our dinners were just fine. We had also each got a beer. No sooner were we done with our dinners BJ brought us our check. We were going to have another beer but maybe BJ was offended by my lack of perfume and wanted us out of there. Then on top of it she added a gratuity to the check. There were only two of us, If we had another beer like I wanted she would have received a better tip. Moral of the story, servers, don't wear perfume. You never know who you are going to offend. Always ask your table, what else can I bring you? You will make your employer more money and you will get a larger tip. Never give your self a tip, your customer may find it VERY offended and leave you less then they would have normally left you.

My family and I have been going to gentleman Jim's for about 10 years now. We always love the food and a very friendly atmosphere. Great pizza and all their sandwiches and dinners are delicious and reasonably priced, however in the last two years I'm not sure if it's been a change of management or what but the condition of the restaurant has really gone downhill. The bathrooms are disgusting and are falling apart. The table chair and booths as well as the high hairs are falling apart. The restaurant is getting a very dirty feel to it. I would hate to see your loyal customer base disappears because of it.

I'm not quite sure what to say here. No, really. No commentary about my parents, nor a witticism from my husband. My brother would probably go to McD's before stepping foot in here. Although this has the making of a low-end sports bar hangout, the food, atmosphere and attitude makes this establishment a place to avoid. While the food is not horrific, it's also not good either. The only thing that they do decently would be the buffalo-wings, but even then, it's nothing special. The salads are all made with sad iceberg lettuce with random vegetables sliced and tossed on. The burgers are dry and sitting on mildly stale bread (no, it's not toasted, it's stale). When one finally see one of the wait staff, you will suddenly see visions of little roadside diners, with an aging gravel throated waitress by the name of "Ethel" calling you 'hon". However, the wait staff here will so pointedly ignore you, that you yearn to hear her say "hon" just to be acknowledged. I've eaten here twice because it's very close by my house...but so are a slew of other restaurants. Really not worth it.

Upper deck bar review only.--3 strikes and you're out! What a dump! I went last night for Sunday night football and the highlight was the one big screen located in a very strange spot related to the bar which only seats @15. The flyer posted downstairs stated they offered the same happy hour specials for football games, plus a few Sunday only specials. Not true-there was no free pizza, the domestic draft was full price, and they were out of yuengling bottles! The bartender spent more time outside "smoking", than he did behind the bar and even did a shot with some of his "friends". Don't waste your time!

The best pizza ever! If your a fan of Ledo's pizza you will be wowed by the crispy, cheesy little squares of heaven from Gentleman Jims! There special recipe crust is rumored to contain beer as the secret ingredient which in turn makes the crust light, airy and crispy. The tomato sauce is chunky and almost sweet like homemade stewed tomatoes and the cheese adds an amazing balance of saltiness. This family run business is in an industrial park, but don't let the location or decor fool you, they know what their doing in the kitchen and the service is excellent.

The week before Christmas, the wife of a friend had Montgomery Hospice come into their home. I wanted to send food to help out, but the online delivery services couldn't get anything delivered because of holiday packages, so I tried to find somewhere local, but could only find pizza or Chinese. I called Montgomery Hospice for a suggestion since I live in Va., and they suggested Gentleman Jim's. I called their catering department and told Joe my dilemma. I didn't even think about how busy they would be catering Christmas parties, but Joe said he would get something to the house within a few days. Well, not only did he get lasagne, chicken parmesan, bread, salad, etc., to the house, but Joe and his wife personally took the delivery the next evening. My friends were so touched by their kindness and they said the food was delicious. I haven't made my way to Rockville (yet) to try out the food, but the kindness of these people is amazing.

Let me start off by saying that they make AMAZING pizza. That being said, let's get into the service. The restaurant is family owned and family RUN. The owner, Jim Hance, is the manager and every single one of his daughters have or currently do work there. They are all spoiled bitches that treat their customers as dirty gum on the bottom of their shoe. They act as if you are disturbing them and inconveniencing them to dare to sit in their section. If they even try to be nice it's gushing with sarcasm and only comes off as offensive when they smile and call you "hun." If you ever dare complain about any of the food - GOOD LUCK with; a. getting your money back, b. getting anyone to apologize or admit any fault done by the restaurant, and c. getting to speak with the manager (Jim). I can assure you he will never contact you or even care that there is an angry customer. Before he has even heard your voice he will have already heard the story about what a horrible person you are from their daughters. Besides the Hance family there are a few other family friends that work there. They are better than the "J sisters" but they are not much better. Save your time, energy, and money.

This place has the best pizza in town. I also have to say the service has always been excellent. Bj has worked there forever, she's a good warm genuine person. The owner is a class act and so are his daughters. Any bad I read in past reviews seem to come from jealous, much much less attractive women. Sorry it had to be said. Great job guys keep up the great work.

GJ's is a good, clean, casual family place to get burgers, sandwiches and beer at a reasonable price. But what makes me go back- repeatedly- is the fabulous PIZZA! This is no Pizza Hut or Domino's fare- no it is a unique Swiss Cheese and a slightly sweet tomato sauce on a square homemade crust. Delicious!!! And better yet-!- Monday and Tuesdays are 1/2 price pizza night when you eat in! AND they're friendly!

I've been eating there pizza since I was a lil girl when they had their store In twinbrook. I have and always will think the world of there pizza. I actually worked here for a lil over a year and would try something different every time I worked and never had any complaints. Their salads are huge and worth the money, you must try the Cajun style chicken Caesar salad its my favorite. Their sports bar is fun and has a great crowd of regulars. I would like to stress about the service because I saw a complaint about the owners daughters and having known them and worked with them, I know they are hard working and well educated individuals who I'm sure you just caught them on a bad day or even week. It is a family business after all and what's a family business without a lil drama.......... and to the oversized lady who placed that $90 order that I took and decided to call out my name on here, you were not very nice to begin with and nothing was wrong with your order. I wrote and repeated your order to you just like I did with every order I took while working there, seeing as it is mandatory that I did so. I'm sure when you got back and finished everything but the spinich dip (cause I'm sure it was too healthy for you it only tasted rancid) you were still hungry and had run out of money, which would explain why you only had the dip to bring back. Btw I know you spoke to the owner that same night, yes it might have been three hours later but you were told he would call you back that day. Remember its a family owned business and if they went around giving refunds to everyone who didn't like the food or whatever the excuse would be, their wouldn't be a gentleman Jim's. which is why we ask for you to bring the food back to observe that you just didn't eat it and come to get your money back because you want to scam them. btw I noticed in another forum you posted it was cold when you got it home even though you were an hour late picking it up and in the forum you said you had a half and hour dive from where you going so of course it was cold. Anyways great place very family Friendly and the owner mr Hance is a fantastic owner and father.

This out of the way pizza/sands/pasta restaurant pleasantly surprised me. The cheeseburger sub is ridiculous, in a good way. I called for a to-go box when it arrived. Their pizza is square, with a delicate pastry like crust, melty cheese, and sweet sauce. Gentleman Jim's would do huge business in a city center with late hours. Add beer and it's pure happiness.

Best Pizza in Maryland, HANDS DOWN!!!! It's a bit different than generic pizza, but that's what makes this place so great. Once again, BEST PIZZA! A real treat to go every time. Atmosphere is also a really cool old town Gaithersburg theme.

  • Joe w.

Great pie! I visit the area often and have heard about their pies. Finally got a chance to taste one. Not like Pizza in the rest of the Northeast. Great crust, sweet sauce. Makes you want another piece. Will be back for more!

  • C J.

I have mixed feelings. So I gave it three stars. The good. The pizza was decent. And with half price pizza night it's a good deal. The service is friendly and mean well. Inside is comfortable and casual. The bad. The items not pizza were not so good. Cold or just not flavorful and expensive. The service while friendly is young and not very experienced. For the price we paid is only go back for half price pizza night.

If you didn't grow up with this pizza and don't like it after trying it, or it's not your favorite, then just go away. This is a place for locals who know what amazing Maryland style pizza is--square with tangy cheese and sweet sauce. GJ's does it best. My family always orders ours with extra sauce and asks it to be "well done" to get just a little bit of char on the crust. I have to get it at least once a month. Their apps are good, too. Good wings and potato skins. It's a really relaxed place so I'm annoyed reading reviews on here that are supposedly disillusioned by the service and the menu. It's a local pizza place/restaurant in Gaithersburg. If you want an artisan topped concoction then go pay for an overpriced pizza at Matchbox. But hopefully you can appreciate this unique pizza!

The pizza is the absolute BEST! The sauce is hands down phenomenal, delicious dough and always cooked perfectly. It's truly the best pizza around. Not the greatest atmosphere for dining in, it's a little run down. However, the service is always good and it's well worth it for the food. I am happy to drive across town just to pick up. It's a must try!

My boyfriend and I have ordered from here twice for delivery and they have messed up my food both times. Both times my medium burger has been cooked so much that it is almost burnt. This time it was even plain and burnt. I also ordered a sandwich for lunch tomorrow; supposed to be tuna salad on croissant with bacon. I got tuna salad on sub, no bacon. I guess I should be grateful I still got the bag of chips. Worst food ever! Will never order from here again. What a waste of time and money!

I grew up in Twinbrook and frequented the original upstairs-only version of GJ's. I now live in Seattle but was in town recently, so I headed out to the current location to feast on my favorite pizza memories from the early 80s. I was not disappointed. It was delicious. I don't think I've eaten anything else at GJ's, but the pizza is the flagship item on the menu. I wish I could get the sauce and dough recipes + a baking pan to have it more often.

So for all the negative reviews on here criticizing the pizza - there is a key part of understanding this place before you bash it. This is NOT NY style or traditional pizza. This is MD-style pizza, square, with a rich, sweet tomato, and tangy cheese. Don't assume Ledo's, but also don't expect Domino's (and why would you want to?). I love this place. The pizza is unique and addicting - I start to crave it every week now. My girlfriend and her family introduced me a few months ago, and it's been their favorite family restaurant for well over a decade. So don't expect anything hoity-toity. The charm is in the Gaithersburg decorations, the staff, and the unassumption of sitting down in a quaint family place to enjoy some pizza and family.

  • John B.

I'm a nice guy and I hate to bash someone's hard work, but this pizza was just awful. Had a diverse group of palates who can't agree on anything, but we all agreed that the food here sucked. Their pizza sauce is so sweet it's almost a dessert pizza, and not in a good way. Maybe it is an acquired taste, but nothing else about this place that would motivate me to try and acquire it.

    (1)
  • Taylor F.

I'll agree that their pizza is unique and it is pretty good. it isn't my favorite kind of pizza though. I do love thin crust and greasy is also good. the sweet sauce here can be a bit overwhelming. I almost want some spice to balance the sweetness. John B. from dc- I can totally understand what you mean. it's a very sweet sauce and atypical of the most common pizza. it's definitely an acquired taste and one that you kind of love or hate. it also has been better than other times when I've eaten it. this place is never crowded, even on weekends, but it can take a long time for your pizzas to come out. I would say its worth a try but only if you live close by.

I've been coming here ever since my 13-0 machine-pitch baseball team won the championship game in 1996. We all ordered pepperoni and cheese pizzas and passed out trophies. I remembered that the wait staff in 1996 was especially prompt when we were 6-year olds. Times never change! I come here at least once per year to eat pizza, salads, and burgers. The salads come out in huge portions, while the pizza is perfect. The appetizer sampler platter is a great thing to pick up after a long drive from work. My mom drives home from Springfield everyday, and stopping by Gentleman Jim's is perfect for when you just want to eat some of dem potato skins, chicken tenders, buffalo wings, corona shrimp, and mozzarella sticks served with three dipping sauces.

Definitely the best pizza in Maryland. Had been to the other locations as a kid & the recipe has been kept the same. I give it 4 stars only because there are always fruit flies flying around & the bathroom always smells like sulfur.

  • Nicole R.

This place has super yummy pizza that is unique. If you are within a close proximity to this place and you love pizza, you must try it. Their recipe is different from anything else I've ever had. My fellow reviewers decribed it perfectly; very flaky crust with tangy sauce. It's a real treat and the perfect place to take the family. The wait staff has always been friendly and accomodating. I love the fact that Gentleman Jim's is family owned because I believe in supporting smaller businesses over chain restaurants.

    (4)
  • Sarah H.

Their subs are pretty tasty and their drinks are well mixed. Their signature dish, the pizza, is just a little odd to me. Not a huge fan of the sweet sauce and swiss cheese.

  • Devin C.

Love this place. The food is great and the employees are friendly. The restaurant is known by most for their amazing pizza but having tried everything on the menu I can say that they have other specialties as well. Some of my favorites include the "donnas great escape" (one of the best burgers I've ever had), "nachos grande" (skyscraper of nachos), "Billy's model t"(grilled triple decker sandwich with cole slaw on it) and "Kevin's classic Reuben". I could go on, it's all so good! Even their standard garden salad is really good. I recommend this place to anyone that likes good food and a good time.

    (5)
  • Kor H.

I actually love this place (I can't eat the pizza sauce but their sauceless pizza is great) and so is their crab dip! They have great specials for teams, parties, etc which is most likely because they are a community based business and care about the community they do business is but we have had a few team parties here and the service was excellent!

  • Cemile V.

Pizza is terrible. Worst I've ever had in fact. The $5 frozen pizza's I buy from Safeway are better. Salad was obviously pre-made-- like in most dumpy restaurants. Burger was ok. Cheap meat.

Amazing pizza! I usually go up to the upper deck bar but I've always had good experiences! It's a friendly place and everyone seems to know eachother. Decent priced beers coupled with weekly food specials... you can't go wrong!

A well-known establishment for their pizza, the upstairs bar seemed to be more like a college dorm community room with members of the Delta House. The staff was pleasant with one bartender but completely overwhelmed. The fold up table for beer pong in the corner was not in use, but there was a patron watching television three feet away who might have been more than inebriated. People watching here couldn't compare when we saw two women that kept frequenting the ladies room, multiple times...together, or the woman escorted by Delta seniors to the back door where she could potentially be ill from the top deck and not on the indoor outdated carpet. The drinks were inexpensive here also, between $4-$5. The bathroom was tidy but outdated. Clearly a local neighborhood bar where everyone knew everyone's name, except ours, and that was okay with us. A little concerned for the comings and goings of some folks. Do yourself a favor: eat in the dining room and avoid the bar.

Only thing worth having here is the pizza. Sauce is sweet, crust is chewy. Warning: half price pizza night comes with an automatic 18% tip included, calculated on the full price of the tab (including drinks).

I've been telling people for years about Gentleman Jim's pizza. I love Gentleman Jim's pizza. It is one of the gems in this area that many new transients & even quite a few natives are not even aware of. G'Jim's is one of the best pizza places around. I would have given them a 5 star rating except for a little bad experience I had there sometime ago. I always wanted to go take advantage of their 1/2 price pizza night, but my schedule never allowed for it. Finally, home alone with my sweetie out of town, I had a chance. I was pretty hungry so I ordered a large pizza, thinking I'll just bring home what I can't finish-IF I don't finish.. Shortly after the waitress brought my pizza, she came back over to tell me that her boss told her that if I don't eat at least 1/2 of the pizza, the pizza would be full price. She continued by advising me, "So, stuff your face." I finished more than 1/2 the pizza, but I kind of left with a bad taste in my mouth. "Stuff my face"? Why would you say that to a customer? I could just imagine her saying that to my father or something. I didn't raise a fuss over the fact that there wasn't a sign saying you had to eat at least 1/2 the pizza on the premises or it would be full price. I didn't even have a problem with that part, because the 1/2 deal was for dining in only-not take out-so, okay-you can't have people eating one slice & then taking it home. I think it really hit me when I was telling a friend about my going to G'Jim's for pizza & telling him what the waitress had said. "She said that to you?" he asked. Yeah, that's pretty rude. There pizza is great & I've gotten take out a couple times since, but I don't know...the rude experience just seems to have turned me off & I don't go there as much as I used to. That's how I work. I don't complain-I just don't go back! The Original Ambrosia in Rockville (the one down by Randoph Rd-not the one by the college) is great pizza too and they know how to talk to people a little better.

I have visited many times and it only gets better. My favorite, the ruebin with the crab dip as an appetizer. The pizza and the burgers are off the wall. The wait staff is great. I took my wife and 3 year old a month ago and they both loved it. Wives.... when you see the credit card bill, don't let the name fool you. It is great food, plenty of tv hanging around and all around great atomsphere. I love stopping in for a bite and now with my family backing it, I get to come more often. 5 Stars!!

I went here St. Patricks Day 2009. They were packed! I wanted to try the corn beef and cabbage, but they were completely out and only at 7 PM. Thankfully, it was half off pizza night. The pizza was fantastic! Really not what I would expect from a pub. It was very soft, with great fresh toppings. Only down side, there was zero parking, but it was a rather busy night. 4 stars all the way.

Hadn't been in at least three years since I rarely get to Gaithersburg, but today I was in that area so I dropped by for a pizza. And I'm eating it right now like a rabid wolverine. Oh.My.God. That is good pizza. It's totally non-traditional so if you are partial to any certain type of pizza, you may be disappointed. GJ's does not remind me of any other pizza I've ever had in USA or Italy, it is unique. The crust and the sauce are not like any I've had anywhere else - sort of difficult to describe. Maybe it's not the only type of pizza I'd ever want to have for the rest of my life, but it's wonderful for a change of pace. It is in a really tucked away random location, but if you're anywhere near Montgomery County, it's worth the trip. That's right, I said it.
