Savage River Lodge

A really beautiful setting in the mountains. I am not a fan of real camping, this is as close to camping as I get. The cabins have a wonderful wood smell to them the second you enter. The cabins are warmed with a gas fireplace which is awesome in cold weather. The windows look to be super reinforced since I could detect no breeze or drafts. They have light modern touches, such as the loft design for the bedroom area overlooking the living room. The balcony is large and has a view of the forest. The bathroom is nice and spacious with double sinks. Not much in the way of bathroom toiletries, and what they have has a heavy cedar scent to it that you may not enjoy, so bring your favorite shampoo/conditioner just in case. No TV or radio. We found the total silence unnerving, so recommend you bring a small radio or something that can play music for late nights playing board games. The forest surrounding the cabins is really pretty, we walked along a 1.5 mile trail and saw a black bear munching on some foliage along the path. We managed to snap some photos before it bounded away. Lots of deer in the area as well. We didn't have to go far to see those, they like to gather in the field near the main lodge. The provided trail maps are easy to follow. The food at the lodge is excellent. I think I liked the breakfast the best. You must try the pancakes with real maple syrup gathered from the trees around the lodge. The french toast is very very good as well. Dinner was also good, people dressed up a bit so be prepared and pack something nice for dinner. The morning muffins are good and taste fresh and home made. We did the slightly over 1 hour drive to Fallingwater and it was beautiful. That is definitely an activity you should do while in the area. The owners seem to be avid dog lovers and if you are one too, you will be right at home. We didn't see any dogs while we were there however. The unpaved entryway is not as bad as everyone says, just don't roar down it and you should be fine. I think about the only criticisms I'd give is there is no full-length mirror, a radio/iPod dock would be nice, and it is a bit pricey. Also, don't tell visitors they get a "welcome basket" because then they expect it to be filled with goodies. All you get is a basket "filled" with your house key. Fail.
This is an inn nestled in the woods smack in the middle of a state park. The winding forest road in will make your lady wonder where exactly you're taking her. Wonderful lodge with roaring fireplace and restaurant that pumps out fantastic gourmet dishes. Rustic, yet comfy cabins with bedroom lofts. Great hiking in hemlock stands and pines. Totally tranquil! 3 hr drive puts it within easy striking distance for a weekend. And they make their own maple syrup.
The funny thing is, on Saturday morning, I didn't even know where I was going for my birthday weekend... my wife had been planting all kinds of misleading hints (ranging from the Eastern Shore to Frederick), so I didn't know what to expect. After stopping for lunch in Frederick, we drove for a few more hours and ended up at an absolutely idyllic, beautiful getaway, the Savage River Lodge. The managers had everything ready for us: a well-outfitted cabin, fans already running, everything a couple on holiday could need, plus a "Happy Birthday" balloon w/a small box containing two truffles attached. (Aww.) Let me break it down: Surroundings: Beautiful and quiet. You could get into as much trouble as you wanted to... there are miles of trails on the property (a state park) alone to go on mild-medium hikes. If you need small towns or cities, there are a bunch in close proximity (Cumberland was pretty cute) for shopping, dining or antiquing. Our cabin: Spacious, carpeted and very comfortable. It was well-shaded by trees, and we were lucky to have cool nights even in July, so the ceiling fans made it almost too cold. Fluffy but firm bed, coffee/tea laid out for us and a mini-fridge for the wine and groceries we brought. Plenty of room to stretch out, read and relax. Treatment: Excellent, from fresh-baked muffins and juice waiting outside your cabin door each morning to the excellent service we received in setting up tours and having our every need taken care of. The lodge's restaurant was epic, for having a relatively simple menu: we had dinner there our first night, splitting an appetizer of house-made game sausages (two wild boar, one venison), a cup of watermelon soup (had savory accents of onion, basil and cilantro), and splitting their meatloaf (also made with boar and venison) and crab cake entrees. We could have split one entree and been it is, we were stuffed but deliriously so. They have a substantial wine cellar and it sounded like their chef was always experimenting with the menu. We could have easily stayed a few days in our room alone, but the hiking, the small towns, and a halfday trip across the PA state line to two of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed homes lured us out. Still, we both left wishing we had a few more days to stay and enjoy the quiet and lush surroundings. In short, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Back to being the old Duncan's I always heard about!!! Excellent bar food!! Can't wait to try more of their offerings!!! The patrons are local regulars!!! Diverse, colorful, fun!!!! A great place to stop in, relax and be part of the crowd. Will definately be back!
A cup of chili, a cheeseburger, a cold beer, and catching up on Frostburg news and on friends of Dunc's over the decades. Doesn't get any better!! The reconstruction/redesign after the fire returns the look and feel of Dunc's in the good old days. Ruth Ann, daughter of Dick and Dori, has done a great job. So nice to have the 3rd generation Duncan's open and back in business!
Your usual bar. Mean bartender. Awesome bouncer.

Great mac & cheese!! The potato salad is fresh and brisket is slow cooked. The chicken smells good--like Grandma's! :) The atmosphere is casual, reminiscent of summer camp and country stores. The people that work here are friendly and helpful!
Never actually stayed here (I'm from Frostburg) or ate here but I did drink here on the 4th of July. Super friendly owners, cold, cold beer. Perfect location for hikers/bikers and a great view.
Stayed here while cycling the GAP. Everything was great. Room was very quiet. Laundry was on an honor system. The morning breakfast was fine. Innkeeper was happy to chat and fill us in on history and the town. He was very informative and a nice guy. There's no common room so we didn't have any way of meeting people in the evening; met other cyclists in the morning over breakfast though.

An old-school diner with great service, good food, and vintage style to spare! Definitely a must-eat food stop in Frostburg, MD! Very friendly diner patrons and staff. Their pies are the best, although breakfast is a really good bet, too. We've eaten here numerous times and never left hungry, disappointed, or without a smile.
Wow.. What a gem! Old style diner with vintage atmosphere , good food and reasonable prices . Very clean & fast service. Chicken soup, hot roast beef. I even sat in the Harry Truman booth. I was so impressed at how clean it was. Clean booth, clean floor. No graffiti or ripped seats. Only downsides I saw were the corian countertop ( too modern) and while the booths were great looking, they were probably made for teeny boppers of yesteryear.
Our family really enjoyed this little diner. Good food and clean. We ended up sitting in a booth that Harry Truman sat in.

Great place, great coffee , great eats and very comfortable. The staff is super friendly! Will always stop here when I'm in the neighborhood....and it's in a beautiful old stone building where they used to make memorial monuments...what's not to like?
Opens at 7:30 am. That's a nice time if you're the one running the coffee shop. If you don't work on Main Street it's often a bit late to get a cup and get to work early. The help is nice but the coffee is average.
Great little coffee shop. My family has lived up here for years I can't believe I ever missed such a great spot. I got the sausage egg and cheese on an organic whole wheat bagel and if you are used to dunkin doughnuts I promise you this is better. My little cousin got the plain bagel with cream cheese he's describes it as "excellent". I love that they have healthy options for vegans and organic bagels. Very good customer service friendly. Last two notes free wifi!!!!!! CLOSED ON MONDAYS ! Don't make they same mistake I did of showing up only to be disappointed .

Fatboy’s Pizza Shack

We ate the lunch buffet and everything was very fresh. Nicely stocked salad bar and a great selection of New York thin crust pizza. They usually have 3 varieties of home made soups on the buffet as well. The staff is very friendly and the dining area and restrooms were very clean. All in all... A nice Mom and pop type pizza place!
I was on my way to DC. I had dinner here with my family. Very reasonable price. The pizzas were great! You will love the family-friendly environment also.
Stopped here when passing through for work, I was the only one there for a large majority of the time (odd hour during the week). Staff consisted of the owner and a helper in the back, the owner rang me up and was very nice, Pizza was NY style and very good - also a range of flavors. I tried the Pepperoni, Buffalo Chicken and the Hawaiian, they were all tasty. Pizza looked like it had been sitting there for a bit, but it was not surprising due to the odd hour I was there - it was a buffet after all. Decor was country charm and appeared to be recently redone. Tables are picnic/outdoor style so it is great for large groups or families with children. Fat Boys was a step up from Cici's Pizza with the added benefit of being locally owned and operated. Menu service is available as well as delivery.

Had the mussels and linguini. Service was good meal was great. We will be back!! My wife had the the stuffed eggplant. She raved about it. I was surprised at how busy they were in this down economy. That says something about the food and service.
Amazing! Get the lasagna, it's textbook perfect: nice, dense feel, perfect amount of cheese, great sauce, and it arrives piping hot! If you're not a lasagna fan, get anything on the menu and you'll be happy. I've brought many colleagues here and everyone raved over the food every time!
Mussels & Linguini was excellent! Plenty of mussels for my ravenous 4 year old and me to share. I liked her pizza too. Nice rustic ambiance. Very friendly staff.

The dinner portions can feed two and there's a full alcohol menu. Once a waitress mischarged me and the manager gave me a full refund. Overall a swell place to take a big group or a friend who doesn't know what they want. Quality desserts and margarita pitchers that don't skimp on tequila.
We liked it. Kind of dark inside during the day. Chips and salsa were good. Clean for an older building setting. Entrance for us was through the bar area but there may have been another door. There was an outdoor seating area. We liked the food! The portions were good. The margarita was good. The atmosphere was not lively, but we would all go back again.
Authentic awesome Mexican food. The chicken fajitas were very delicious and the guacamole is very fresh. The service was very excellent. This place isn't very far from I-80688 and a worthwhile stop if traveling through. This is a PET FRIENDLY establishment.

Not bad for some place in the middle of no where. I had some chicken noodles and Kung pao which was nasty. The noodles were ok. I eat them all. I've had worse. If you are tired of the franchise restaurants and looking to try something new, I would swing by.
Avoid this place if you care for your life. MSG hell-hole, heart palpitations guaranteed. To add, their chicken is rotten, guess they hope the sauce will mask the smell and taste. YUCK!!!
A blessing. As a sweet and sour chicken aficionado I at first was skeptical of the aforementioned dish's sauce--Eastern Express does a more savory and sour sauce than most places. Since, I've scorned all other sweet and sour sauces as indelicate and simple. Lunch portions are ace and Dinner portions can feed two. The dining room is always empty and if you eat in, you're served almost immediately. I've yet to find a better Chinese food joint.

Hen House Restaurant

I went to the Hen House about three years ago to try a different place out. We actually ran into some old friends as they were leaving. I have to agree with those who have stated that chicken is a bit overpriced and nothing spectacular. The menu options were limited for those that do not eat seafood and the beer selection was all domestic, which is fine if you like them, but for night out I would have liked some options. The inside was really plain looking but I can say it was clean. We ate all of our food but we haven't been back since. It's really an over-hyped place.
Visited the Hen House for the first time with friends who had eaten there many times. The service was great, the portions were huge, the food was better than average, the prices were a surprise on the high side - compared to other places to eat in the area. I ordered a fish sandwich and the piece of fish was so big that I could have used it for a cricket bat - no kidding.
I've have been eating here for many years. This place use to be great before it burnt down, and they had to build a new building. Now a days I would never recommend any of my friends eat there. The menu selection gets smaller and smaller year after year. When you go there they are always out of things on the menu. The portion sizes get smaller and smaller every year. And their prices are very high and keep going higher. The service is poor and never gets any better. Because the building is so big, the noise is terrible. They need to hang up some banners from the ceiling to break up some of the noise. The food is decent. I use to love this place because of their large menu selection and large portions. And I never use to mind paying more. But I've decided that I can no longer continue to support this place as it always disappoints me :( sorry.
