Yummmm. We wanted a quick lunch and were on our way to wegmans when we saw the promoters advertising the restaurant.. The place is so very cute and cozy inside! Very nicely decorated. The Caribbean music added to the ambiance. We didn't know what we wanted and the waitress offered is samples of the jerk chicken and curried goat. I don't eat goat but the chicken was very nice and tender and flavorful.. Ooh did I mention hot?? We got jerk chicken wings, salmon Caesar salad, fried chicken, curried chicken and max and cheese. The food was so good! The fried chicken wasn't the usual.. It has Caribbean spices and a little sauce. The lunch platters came with rice and peas. That is ok.. I'm not a big rice fan. But the side of cabbage and plantain was so yummy! I had a taste for fried chicken and while it was good I would have gotten that jerk chicken if I had to do it again. Well when I go again. Ooh the mango tea.. Delish! Needed a bigger cup. The salmon ok the salad was awesome. Nice and hot and fresh. Now if I had to leave any critical feedback it would be in regard to portion size. I think we could have had a little more of the sides.. The cabbage and plantain. Not sure what the dinner portion looks like in comparison. Another thing.. The food did take a little longer than we thought it should have.. But it was So good who cares. If they served alcohol that would be awesome.. The waitresses were very attentive and friendly. I will be back soon.

Went to Island spice last night with some friends. I loved how the resturant was set up. Its a tiny place, but its very modern and relaxed inside. They reggae music was relaxing, the staff was all so nice. Our waitress was very kind and helpful, and two of the upper management came by and asked how are food was. I got the jerk chicken wings, which were very good and very spicy. I also got the salmon, that was in this orange cream sauce that was AMAZING, i highly recommend it to everyone. There was a small portion of plantains on my plate that was sweetened and delicious and this cabage onion salad that was really good as well. My friends got the peach mango tea and said it was really good, i just drank water. I cant wait to go again, and recommend everyone trying this place. The food was a little expensive but it was good quality and delicious, and worth every penny!

Great people, music and food. I had the BBQ jerk chicken and it was great! Tender, spicy with a dose of sweet. I love chicken on the bone; I live for it. This was done damn good chicken! Rice and beans were good. Plantains were spectacular, but the dish only came with two slices. I had to get more. No bar here and no alcohol, took a point away for that.

Awesome Pineapple Chicken. Very clean new restaurant with friendly staff. I travel for work and eat out a lot at places from very expensive to fast food. This was the best meal I have had in many months.

Best oxtails I've ever had, hands down. Great jerk chicken too, but the oxtails so far ahead I couldn't concentrate on anything else. Also really clean, nice and professional. Great!

We just had the pleasure of having dinner here. The pineapple wing appetizer was simply amazing. Easily the best tasting wings I've ever had!! I had the jerk BBQ chicken dinner and it too was delightful. The fruit drinks that they offer are a little pricey, but are frankly delicious ( I had the pineapple ginger ). The service was first rate and prompt!!! We'll be back, but warning.....spice wimps need not apply!!! Note, they will adjust spice level for you wimps!!!!!

The food was very good. I had curry chicken and my husband had the special of the day pineapple jerk. The plate was more than enough. If it's your first time they will give you a sampling of their fruit drinks. The drink comes in a highball glass which is good. It is close off exit 77

Not going to lie, the food was excellent but the service was horrendous. For starters, I had to wait to be seated with at least 7 or 8 empty tables. Then I had to wait over 5 minutes for average tasting peach tea. No waitress seemed to be assigned to me so after asking one to help me I finally was able to place my order. Then my meal came...had to get up to get my own silverware. Towards the end of my meal I asked a random different waitress (no one came to check on me or even pretended to care how my meal was) and asked for another tea. She obliged but then came back and said "No free refills so you will have to pay for this one" as she placed it on my table. It would have been nice to know this earlier. There went $4 for overpriced sugar-water. The good food did not compensate for the poor service. I will not return.

I had the stewed chicken meal that came with mixed veggies and rice with peas. The chicken fell right off the bone, my plate was full of a variety of flavors that actually caught me by surprise. The staff were very helpful and friendly and I even got to talk to the owner who was just as pleasant as the staff. Looking forward to coming back again and will recommend it to my friends.

The food was amazing here but unfortunately the service is horrible. I have been here twice and the first time I waited about 30 minutes for my food. I wasn't too upset because of the wonderful goat curry. The second time around was not as accepting. I ordered a simple stir fry that took 45 minutes to prepare! So if you're going to try out this place look at waiting around 30 minutes or more.

Rude customer service to go along with a poor establisment that refuses to honor their Groupon deal. This makes it bad for other West Indian Resturant that are actually trying to maintain their client base. Wil not be returning.

I enjoyed meeting one of the owners. We had a great conversation about her goat dish. The goat dish is superb. I travel often and the restaurant gives the wary travel many options. Not all dishes are strictly Jamaican. I will be back often. The goat was not baa baaa baaaad. It was great.

Had the chicken and shrimp Rasta pasta and was excellent lots of flavor only reason why I didn't give them five stars was 1. To call in a order you had to pay for it over the phone , not good for people paying with cash I don't like giving my cc info over the phone but luckily I was staying right across the street and walked over . 2. Price was way to high especially for the area 20.00 that's what you would pay at a bigger restaurant in a much bigger city .

It was ok, the service was good, but it took some time to wait on my order. The food was good, I didn't like the cabbage though. They have a very convenient location, but I will continue to go to Joppa for better Jamaican cuisine.

  • Christina W.

Great food. I had the brown chicken which I thought was spiced just right. Slightly spicy but not in a hot way but perfectly spiced. Food is pricey but ok if not an everyday food spot. I will eat here again just not as often because of price only.

My daughter and I had dinner there today. We both ordered jerk chicken and mango tea. The food and drink was outstanding. The atmosphere was modern yet warm. The staff was very friendly and attentive. We will definitely return soon.

The service and food at this location was fantastic! If you are looking for a Jamaican restaurant in the Aberdeen area and beyond I would definitely recommend this place. I tried the Jerk chicken and it was mouth watering, falling right off of the bone. The decor and visual stimulation of the restaurant was also a treat. Very friendly staff!

First time at Island Spice. As soon as you walk in you can smell the spices from the kitchen - definitely gets you ready for lunch. Decided to try the curry goat as take-out. For take-out I would recommend calling in your order then going to pick it up. There's not much room to wait at the front of the restaurant and I felt like was in the wait staff's way while they were moving about as I was waiting on my order. Manager Zak/Zach was very nice/pleasant. As far as my order was concerned - it was delicious. The curry was amazing. Served with rice and peas (black beans) as well as a couple of bake plantain pieces and some stewed cabbage. My only complaint is that the goat was VERY bony. Spent a lot of time having to eat around large chunks of bone and fishing out a lot of smaller (very sharp) pieces to prevent biting down on them. Have never had goat before so I'm not sure if goat is generally that bony. Nevertheless it wasn't so bad that I won't go back. I'm looking forward to trying the other curries and traditional jerk offerings. Hoping they're around for awhile. Located in a slightly out of the way shopping strip (no bar/alcohol) and there hasn't been much marketing to announce it other than some small signs being staked down around the intersection where it's located.

This visit I picked up the good to bring home. All food was still hot when I get home. The jerk chicken wrap was amazing and full of flavor & spice! Also, you must try their peach mango tea.

Absolutely wonderful meal! The kids loved their fried chicken and stir-fried chicken dishes. The wait staff was pleasant and accommodating, bringing out several samples of sauces for my daughter to try.

Good music and all around atmosphere! Staff was friendly and helpful. I went with the pineapple ginger chicken and it was delicious! The fried plantains were great as well! When back in the area I will stop by again!

As we walked in the door we were greeted right away by the staff. We were happy to see that there was not a lot of people inside but on the other hand wondered why. We quickly found out from our server that they had only been open for a month. The menu looked fantastic. My wife and I decided on the jerk chicken and rasta pasta. Both lunch entrees were served with the house island spice mango tea which was awesome. About 15 min later out food was brought out. It looked and smelled awesome! Plated like a 4 star restaurant and it tasted as good as it looked. Perfect portions left us satisfied and not sick from overeating. I couldn't be happier. The manager, Zack made a point to come over and introduce himself and welcome us. He was very friendly and made us feel like we have been coming to the restaurant for years! Our server was very nice and made sure we were comfortable and checked in on us frequently. We are very excited to come back and try some of the other entrees on the menu!! I took some pics to show our food and interior!

I stumbled upon this place by looking at a sign on the side of the roadon the way home from work. I looked at the address and realized I was very close so I made a detour and decided to check this out since I love Jamaican food. Turns out they just opened a day before. brand new. You could tell by all the employees rushing around trying to make everything just right. The owner was very nice, waitresses were very nice and attentive. The decor of the restaurant was very appeasing. I didn't stay to dine in but I did get an order of curry chicken for carryout. I was kind of hesitant because there were a small number of people eating in. But when the dish came out I was satisfied. classic curry chicken dish. chicken was tender and fell off the bone. The rice and peas were made with kidney beans. Flaky not sticky. The gravy was flavorful with lots of curry but it was not too hot. Just the way I like it. The vegetables were done al dente and crispy. All in all for $12.95 I was satisfied. I really loved the decor of the restaurant, warm and inviting. The music was not too loud so conversations could be spoken normally. All in all I will return to this restaurant again and this time I'll dine in. at that point I will give you another review.

I purchased a Groupon and two of us had lunch (February 12,2015). It was very nice. Employees were festively dressed and the decor was Sweet! I had the curry goat with rice. The service was excellent and the food delicious. I recommend - try it for a tasty, pleasant meal.

A remarkable find! Very friendly staff, great food and an inviting atmosphere. We ordered the island spice shrimp as an appetizer, which was delicious. That was followed by the Rasta pasta, which I feel is a must try. We also had the curry goat which was very flavorful. I was pleasantly surprised by the side of vegetables which had both great flavor and texture. The plantains were a little chewy but that's really a minor complaint considering the incredible meal we had. We're already planning a return visit.

I'm a Jamaican Food connoisseur... I pass by here all the time, I think I should've went with my gut an ate Mexican across the street... She talked me into a pineapple chicken w/ rice & peas... My rice was mushy I mean almost mashed potatoes (extremely overcooked) I wish I had dined in so I could send it back... That's the price u pay for to go ordering... On the other hand the restaurant set up was nice... Maybe I caught them on a bad day....

This review is for the service and I can't say about the food. I went there tonight to order carryout and presented a Groupon. I was told it must be dine in, ok, I'll dine in then. Then I was told to use the Groupon, it must be two people. I stated I planned on ordering two entrees, which would be the same amount as two people and was told the Groupon would not be honored. I told the front desk that they have lost my business and left. I have requested a refund from Groupon since the business apparently is clearly not in the business of selling food. I question the high marks from my fellow yelpers as there was one or two couples in the place and if the food is that good, then I would expect WAY more customers and management wouldn't be doing Groupons to drum up business and then turning customers away when they arrived. If your planning on using a Groupon here, don't waste your time, get your money back now.

After a long day of meetings, I passed this place on my way to the hotel. It doesn't look like much from the outside but I needed the walk from the Hampton Inn so headed there for dinner. It is BEAUTIFUL inside and the service is excellent. Although I liked the teas, they were a little on the sweet side for me. I ordered the jerk chicken wrap and it was delicious. If you're in town or just driving past Exit 77 on I-95, I recommend you stop by. I will definitely return just to try other things on the menu.

Who would have guessed that a remarkable Caribbean jerk restaurant would exist in a business park in Edgewood? I had the Brown Stew Chicken and the bread pudding, and both were fantastic. The mango tea was also very good.

It's all about the gravy. And they GET it. I had goat curry this time and it's gravy was wonderful, as was the chicken curry's. The goat portion was good-sized -- no complaints. Also had the chicken soup which was very very good too.

Good food. Friendly service. Reasonable prices. This area sort of lacks good places to eat out. Not that there aren't any. It's just that ones choices are limited. I'm happy to report that there is now one more that I wouldn't hesitate returning to.

I've never been to Jamaica so I can't make the comparison to the native food but my companion is and described it as authentic. (Not quite as good as his mama's but...) I have enjoyed a variety of meals including the curried chicken, the brown stew chicken, and the pepper steak. All of these entrees come with rice, mixed vegetables, and fried plantains. You can adjust the heat level to your liking. My companion had the steamed snapper. While all my food has been delicious this was outstanding! I will definitely be ordering it on my next visit. The service has been a adequate, but the food comes out swiftly! The atmosphere is casual with a warm island feeling.

Try the peach mango tea! Also the curry goat, jerk chicken & brown stew chicken it's excellent!! Service fast, accurate and pleasant. Caren (our server) was a delight and attentive. We will definitely return, this our 2nd visit. To go is also an option.....portions slightly larger-just fyi:)

We stumbled upon this place, after looking for a quick bite to eat for lunch off of I-95. It's located in a small strip mall, across the street from Motel 6. The restaurant has just opened, which is probably why we didn't see it on any maps before. The food here is delicious! I got the BBQ Jerk Chicken, which was spicy but tasty. The sauce did not overpower the taste of the jerk spices, which I found to be great. It came with rice, pan fried plantains (also really good) and some kind of slaw. My husband got the Goat Curry, which he also really enjoyed. Since we came on the weekend, they only served their normal dinner portions, so be prepared for a lot of food. The staff was really friendly and the service was spot on. Our drinks did not go empty and the owner, Zack, came by and introduced himself at the end of our meal. He asked us how everything was done and if it was to our liking. I always appreciate it when the manager or owner does that. Makes you feel like they generally care about your patronage. All in all, we would come back if we were in the area again.

Driving on my way back from NYC and found this awesome little restaurant. Good prices, & even better food! BBQ jerk chicken and rasta pasta are most excellenttttt. You can really tell there's love put into the food because it's of the flavor packed awesomeness. Definitely worth coming here.

  • Whitley D.

So far I have tried the Rasta pasta....delicious...the pineapple chicken dish...delicious....and the BBQ jerk chicken...also delicious. So far I haven't had a bad experience. I do believe it is a little pricey, but the food does make you forget about the prices once you put it into your mouth!! They have very friendly staff as well, and the place is very clean. One thing I didn't really care for was the music. When I walk into a Caribbean restaurant I think of island music, well they had rock and roll playing when I went. Other than the music and the prices this place is a must try!

Let me start by saying my husband and I have been to Jamaica many times over the years, and has experienced the local cuisine throughout different parts of the country. Both of us concur that Island Spice offers the most authentic food in the states we have encountered. The jerk chicken wings are addicting, great flavor with just the right amount of heat. I am addicted the the Island spice shrimp, and I am not a seafood lover. It comes with cabbage and plantains, again two things not on my favorite list, but together in this dish are amazing. I have never met a plantain I liked, here or in Jamaica until now, they are cooked to perfection and are on the sweet side. Both the Rasta Pasta and the Jamaican Stew are out of this world. The coco bread, when warm out of the oven just melts in your mouth, no condiments needed. You must also try the mango iced tea, full of great flavors. I sneak over whenever I can to grab some beef patties, They are wonderful, full of flavor with a great kick of heat. The only downside we have encountered on our multiple visits is the slow, less than attentive service. Sometimes we have waited 15 minutes after being seated for a waitress to acknowledge us. But we deal with this because the food is worth the wait. This is the only reason I am offering 4 stars instead of 5. I definitely recommend this well decorated, clean establishment, but just remember that it may be a wait, but it will be worth it in the end.

Just tried this place for the first time we got the brown stew chicken it was AWESOME so flavorful and tender the rice and pea were good as well only thing I wasn't to crazy about was the vegetables that came with it just didn't like that taste of them but other than that it was all great I will def go back and try something else

Found this while on travel for work and it did not disappoint. I had the jerk chicken and it had just the right amount of spice and heat. Also came with plantain, cabbage, and rice and beans. Will definitely go back when in the area!

  • Tanya C.

Came here due to a groupon. We were greeted after a while of standing around and were seated. The waitress was very nice and gave us the menu. We ordered pineapple soda and I had the goat curry. I was asked if I wanted rice or rice with peas. I had the latter. My husband wanted the fried chicken but the fryer was closed. He ordered chicken curry and that was also unavailable. The cook later said if we waited that he could make it and we did. The goat curry was good though I was disappointed since the rice and peas turned out to be rice and beans. I hate beans. The curry made up for it and i also had a tortilla like bread. We both loved the cabbage veggie and the plantains. Overall out was pretty good. Food did take a while but was worth it.

We carried out for the 1st time the other day. We had curry chicken, stew chicken and roti. I'll order white rice instead of the rice and peas next time (dry and flavorless) but other than that-everything was deliciously prepared. Healthy portions as well! We couldn't finish it all. Will definitely be back!

This is a hidden gem tucked away in a discrete strip mall just off Rt. 24. I discovered this place after quite a long a wait outside TX Road House where we decided to bail and check out this place. Best decision ever! Must Get-Jerk Chicken, Goat Curry and Oxtail. Service-Fast and Delightful Ambience-Cute and to the point. Don't think twice, just do it.

BEST Jamaican food I've had in the U.S.! I've passed this place many times and saw the "Coming Soon!" sign and waited... And waited... And waited. ;-) FINALLY! Today I got to try what I hoped would be great. They didn't disappoint. I had the Jerk Chicken Spinach Wrap with a side of red beans and rice. (see photo). The place is beautiful inside and the folks that work here are really nice. The owner got me some "hot sauce", which tasted (to ME) more sweet than spicy. However, I did get a little warm inside. I put the hot sauce on the red beans and brown rice. The jerk chicken wrap was perfect. I'll be back... And back... And back.

Our party of 4 stopped here on the way to the beach. We loved the cheerful atmosphere of the restaurant and the big smiles with which we were greeted a treated as soon as we stepped through the door. We had the BBQ chicken, the jerk chicken and the curry chicken and all were delicious. The steamed cabbage and vegetables as a side dish were fresh and steed just right. Our teen had the rasta pasta. Very unusual flavor with a spicy kick. Very tasty! The highlight was the mango peach tea. Very sweet and flavorful. Try the pepper condiment! Very sweet-sour-spicy. Very delightful experience and highly recommended if you are looking for good food, warm-hearted service and comfy and clean atmosphere. Only distraction was that the great Jamaican music was a touch too loud for our table.

The food is good but some stuff is over Priced comparable to other Caribbean places a few item ie ( jerk chicken 15 dollars is over priced for the portions. It is good but other Caribbean places that could compete are mostly in the hood lol and too far to keep these folks honest on the prices :) Still good food, u just pay extra for having jerk chick in Harford co i guess :)

  • Mark K.

We really enjoyed our dinner! The jerk chicken was absolutely great. It had the perfect amount of spice and sweetness. Also, we were very kindly given a sample of the curried goat and curried chicken, which were both equally tasty. My wife's coconut curry shrimp dish was amazing, and I enjoyed dipping some of our roti in the sauce. The staff were so friendly and accommodating. I hope word gets around about this gem because it deserves all the praise it gets! The owners have a nice thing going here, and I'm pleased to say I'll be a regular from now on!

This is a solid offering and the only Caribbean in the area to my knowledge. The service is not quick or particularly attentive, but the food is very tasty, and the Rasta Pasta is very popular, and quite worth trying. I've tried several different dishes here (usually specials) and have always been happy with my meals.

I am a road warrior business traveling foodie. After a long drive from NJ to Edgewood, I passed this place on my way the Hampton Inn. I pulled into the parking lot of the Hampton, launched my Tripple D app; nothing close. Launched my yelp app, and this place pops up. I backed out of the hotel spot and headed back. As I pulled into the parking lot, I noticed a guy walking out of this place carrying some take-out. His long dreads hung from the green, yellow, and red knit hat on his head. I thought this to be a good sign. Heck, if were my restaurant, I'd pay that guy to sit watching out the window, and every time a car pulled in, he would walk out the front door and come around and back in the back door. Maybe he did! Anyway, the first thing I noticed when I opened the door is the big Philippians 4:13 Scripture over the second door; "I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me." I love that. One of my favorite verses. And I appreciate a business owner who is willing to take that risk and put what they believe right out there. It tells me their faith is more important than their business. As it should be. I was warmly greeted by pleasant woman with a Jamaican accent (another good sign). The place is clean, and very nicely decorated. It has a very warm and comfortable feel. I glanced at the menu, but I knew what I was going to do anyway. "What do you recommend?" I asked. "Rasta Pasta". She replied. Done. A few minutes later, I'm checked into the Hampton, and ready to eat and get caught up on some work. Until I took the first bite. Then I knew I had to write a review. I'm Italian. And I cook. A lot. I am a bit picky about Italian food. So the idea of ordering a Jamaican pasta dish intrigued me. When I opened the carry out container I was blown away by how beautiful this dish is. (Yes I took a picture) When I tasted it, I knew work was going to wait until I wrote this. The first thing I felt was a bit of heat. Right after that, came the sweet. And then after the swallow, another hint of heat. This maybe one of the most tasty dishes I have ever had. The pasta was perfect. The chicken was tender and flavorful. The whole dish rocked. Great find. Highly recommend.

This place is pretty darn good. We had the curried goat and the jerk chicken. Both were cooked and spiced very well!! I truly loved the rice and peas. Tasted so coconutty. Really something special. My only complaints were the pastry on the meat patties were really thick and the waitress didn't tell us the specials. I saw the specials on the board after the fact and I would of went with something off of that menu. I'll definitely be back though. Very satisfied with the experience.

So disappointed. The coco bread was actually kings Hawaiian petrified by the microwave. Way too many short cuts taken With the food. Not impressed. Expected more flavor and just didn't hit the mark. Nope, not going back.

Holy cow wow. The coconut bbq sauce is so so good. Chicken was moist and falling off the bone. Rice and beans on point, vegetables on point, very friendly staff that also loves the food here! Really nice environment, too. You could take a date here, business meeting, or go casual like me ;) my friend got oxtail, tried it loved it. I've never had it before so I can't compare, but it was really good. I wish I had any room for desert but I couldn't even finish my chicken. Need to come back to try everything on the menu ugh.

Ordered the coconut shrimp and rasta pasta. It is PHENOMENAL! The red velvet cake is amazeballs too. The people who work here are very attentive and nice and the decor is beautiful. Also VERY clean.

Island Spice is a GEM! The place is nicely decorated. Very tasteful furnishings and wall hangings and stone work elevates the level of class. Once seated you forget you are in a strip mall eatery. Service is sharp and they don't miss a single detail. I like that the servers wear a uniform, black pants and a brightly colored island themed shirt. The owner husband and wife team visit tables even the Chef's uniform was cool with a bright red coat and matching red kicks. I had the coconut wings, they were crazy good. A unique take on wing sauce but the kicker here is the way they cook the wings they are not petrified in the fryer. They bake them so they are moist and gooey and flat out delicious. Next I had the Rasta Pasta. There are 3 styles seafood, shrimp, and Jerk Chicken. The sauce is creamy and a little spicy a bowl of this will change your life! This place is ran on passion and it shows in ever facet of your visit. Go and enjoy! FoodDude! Cool Runnin man!
