This place is great if you're having a pasta craving! We've been coming here for years and have seen all the transformations that the building has gone through. The newly remodeled place looks great and more high-end! My only complaint is when I'm eating dinner while the bar is filled, it gets pretty loud. I love getting the stuffed shells and ravioli, but I wish they put more in the meal then just 2 shells. The cream of crab soup is also delicious. Would definitely recommend!

You can get an awesome $6 calzone here packed with sausage, ham, and pepperoni. They charge you if you don't want all of those things but if it suits your fancy, it's an awesome price. Not a big fan of the chicken parm. It's just dry pieces of chopped up chicken on a sub roll and it's not very good in my opinion. The calzone makes up for it though!

I'm new to the area. The Chicken Alfredo was very bland...no flavor what so ever and my bread was burned. I may give their pizza a chance before I decide not to go back. I'll give them a second chance...one day.

The interior is decent, and it there is enough seating to accommodate the big weekend crowds. Service is friendly, but a bit on the slow side. Perhaps that is because of the high traffic from take-away customers. Seriously, there was another person arriving every couple of minutes to pick up pizza to take home, which shows what a local favorite this place is. We split a pizza and had mixed opinions. Basically, my husband was a fan of the pizza and I was not, so I'm splitting the difference and giving Mamma Lucia's 3 stars. We got a large pie of the Mamma's special (or something similarly named) with diced tomatoes (that looked like they were straight out of a can), mushrooms, and prosciutto toppings. My husband really liked the quality of the prosciutto. To be fair, the toppings were in abundance (as was the cheese). There was something about the crust I can't quite put my finger on that turned me off. Nice and thin and pretty crisp on the bottom, but the edges weren't worth eating. Served well the next day as leftovers.

Ally was our server tonight. Probably the best waitress we have ever had in a long long time. It was our first time here and everything was amazing. The wine, the salad and soup, our entrees and our shared dessert. We will definitely come back and hopefully Ally will be there again!

Happily surprised with the food here. Their pizzas are reasonably priced for the size - 12" started at $8.95. My white pizza with additional anchovy, artichoke & garlic tasted like Mama makes at home! Even the 10 year old that ordered linguine & clams with white sauce really enjoyed her dinner. My only disappointment was the calamari fritti. It wasn't over battered or overcooked, I just didn't like how the actual calamari/squid was flavorless. Nice alternative to those chain Italian restaurants.

I've visited this place a few times as a local, but there has yet been any improvement in the food elements I've tried and I'm not very pleased. I eat Italian food very seldom, so I expect something delightful and tasty and the food here just doesn't cut it for me. I've tried a variety of items off their menu and there hasn't been one dish yet that may sway my experiences to think otherwise. However, they do have a decent bar to have a few drinks with friends or coworkers after work or something considering there are not many options in Dunkirk to choose from.

I visited this place once im not sure if it was a bad day but the food was horrible. Italian being my favorite food I figured i would try something simple so i ordered the calzone, which i was told they make from scratch the meat was under cooked and it was very bland I also ordered the fried calamari which was bland also not even a little salt and pepper. I plan on going back to maybe try their pizza but no time soon.

I came back a third time just to see how the food was for the last time and it was horrible I ordered the lobster ravioli in the sauce had a terrible aftertaste I ended up asking the server to wrap it up so I could just feed it to my dogs considering I spent a lot of money for it so when I tell her that it had A terrible aftertaste she stuck her finger in it and tasted it herself and agreed with me she ended up throwing it away and still charging me full price and I bringing a dish to cover it what kind of service is this I gave her the minimum tip that I was obligated to because this was rude and unprofessional and although she deserve no tip at all I am not that kind of person I will never ever ever come back here again and suggest going up the street to Prince Frederick where they have a better restaurant with better staff and manners

Pretty bad. Overly salty, overcooked shrimp. The carbonara was like Alfredo.

Convenient family dinner spot. Most meals are very good, portions are good size. Some dishes can be a bit pricey. Not many options in Dunkirk, but this is probably the best around.

The owner is a outstanding person and truly cares about the community. He will always assure proper service at his restaurants. Love this place and especially the food!

Basic pizza for a very high price. I stopped by and for lunch bought a stuff meat pizza, running about 24 dollars. Sadly what I got was a stuffed cheese pizza. Lots of crust, lots of cheese, minimal meat. I would expect a pizza like this running 12 bucks or so, paying 24 dollars for a weak topping pizza like this will just make me NOT go back to order again. Like most basic quicky pizza places like this, trying to compete and save money isn't the way to bring back customers. If i want a cheap bad pizza ill spend 7 bucks at 7-11, or k-mart, or dominos. For 24 bucks i better get a great pizza. This wasn't it.

I don't get it - people give the place great reviews but I don't find the food to be very flavorful at all. Maybe their food is from a different region of Italy than I'm accustomed to, but I wouldn't bring my Italian grandmother to eat there, and I probably wouldn't go back on my own, either. That said, the service was food the few times I've eaten (and gotten carry-out) at the restaurant.

My husband and I really like this restaurant! This is our "go to" when we're in the mood for Italian food. I'd have to agree with the other Reviewers, it's not that it "wows" us; but, it's consistently good. My husband didn't care for the "globs" of ricotta cheese that topped the white pizza -- but, I didn't mind it. I usually get the special with asparagus, lobster, bow tie pasta in a cream sauce (sorry, I can't remember its name). But, it's delish! And, I thought the Eggplant Parmigiana was quite good, too. My husband prefers the Lasagna and pizza selections. We're due another trip there -- my mouth is watering just thinking about it...

Food is usually good - worthy of 4 stars, but service is 1 star. The food has brought me back several times over the past five years, but the service is poor at best. Young girls who are more interested in gossiping amongst themselves than serving customers. They are oblivious, as many customers joke between their tables about them. Have had to "borrow" silverware from other tables as we were seated at tables without and served meals and still not given silverware. When they have bread it's good, but often they have none. Went there for lunch once - served lukewarm soup and was told it would be an hour if I wanted to wait for bread. Here's a tip for management - fully heat the soup and begin baking the bread before you open your doors for lunch. Needless to say I'm not a big fan of Mama Lucia's, but there's not a lot to choose from in Dunkirk.

Not sure why people like this place. Aside from being pedestrian at best, these recipes are no more Italian than Chef Boyardee's! That is not an "Italian Cold Cut", either!!

The service is impeccable, the food is amazing and it's always clean!! Keep up the good work!

First off I will say the pizza here is very good.... Dinner and service on the other hand stinks. I ordered Veal Marsala ($17.99) , kinda pricey for an Italian joint in Dunkirk, Md. but I figured what the heck... Our waitress, admittedly was new and it showed. She had no training, couldn't tell me the evenings specials and had no support from management. She asked how diner was and I said "terrible". My plate looked as if it hadn't been touched. The veal tasted like leather and the noodles were cold and undercooked. Our waitress then said ok, if you don't want the rest wrapped up I will get your bill. No can I get the manager for you. No can I get you something else instead. No nothing.... When she brought the bill I pointed out to her $17.99 was a lot of money to pay for a dinner I didn't eat. She giggled and said I'll be back. And she did come back.... with my credit card run for the full amount. Never, ever, ever will I even order a pizza from this place. *** Note to management - Train your staff on customer service. The customer is king! If they don't like their dinner, make it up to them. Also, check your online reviews from time to time... it appears there is a trend of bad reviews lately. Not sure how you will stay in business like that. Not sure you deserve to... I left mad, went to McDonalds, spent 5 bucks on a meal and it was 100 times better than the veal that tasted like an old shoe that I couldn't eat.

I was told by several people that their pizza is supposed to be very good. I ordered two large pizzas (one pepperoni, one cheese). the pizza was horrible. A thin layer of grease covered the top of the pizza. The Cheese slid of the dough. I had a coupon for their pizza but failed to read the very small print that it was good for only Mon-Thur. If I knew that I would have went to PaPa Johns....

Decent basic pizza and pasta. Modest, but acceptable ambiance. It's on route 4, which is nice. If you're in the area or driving through, it's good enough, but there's better Italian to be found if you're willing to look.

Overall, I give this place one star because of the food. Here is why 1. We ordered Chicken Parm, Spaghetti & Meatballs, and some sort of shrimp pasta dish. Chicken Parm was thin and tough. Sauce on it (and the Spaghetti & Meatball dish) was horrible. It had absolutely no flavor. It was runny, indicating the kitchen did not strain the pasta thoroughly. No garlic, basil, olive oil or any other standard seasoning that are supposed to make sauces tasty. The meatball tasted terrible, too. The Shrimp dish was ok...but a little heavy on the booze. Lastly, the pasta in all of our meals was overcooked and tasted terrible. 2. Every place can make a mistake, right? But what happened next told me all I needed to know about Mamma Lucia's. I expressed our displeasure with the waiter, who was very nice. He apologized, but gave us the impression he wasn't going to bring this to the manager. I gave him a chance and asked 5 minutes later, "did you get a chance to speak to the manager? We paid a lot for these dishes". He then said he would do so. I expected the manager to come out as the next step. Nope! The waiter comes back to translate what the manager said to him. Beyond unacceptable. The manager obviously has given his staff the impression he will not back them up to handle what IS his/her job. Apparently, the sauce is "homemade" and I replied there is no way...it was canned and tasted terrible. Absolutely no effort was made to rectify the situation. If there is one thing I've learned by watching Restaurant Impossible and Bar Rescue is this - - and any business for that matter - - is that management must LEAD. For a Restaurant manager, it is their duty to ensure customers continue to come back. We will NEVER step foot into what otherwise looked like a pleasant place to eat. The inside is nice and the wait staff appeared to be doing a good job. But when someone has a legitimate complaint about the very product you are selling and the manager refuses to address it...that means things are not being run well behind the scenes. This ultimately translates into the terrible food we ate. There are better choices in Dunkirk, MD. Stay away from this place. It is overpriced for what you are getting.

We've visited this restaurant a few times. Each time we think, "Well, maybe it was a bad day or we just ordered the wrong item". No, that's not the case. The restaurant is nice (recently renovated), the staff friendly, and the service prompt. The food, however, is... "ick". So salty that I've literally scraped the cheese off lasagna in order to eat it. My son wouldn't eat the meatball so I tried it. Wow, horrible doesn't even begin to describe it. It had such a weird consistency that if someone told me it came from a tube I would believe them. We will not go back again. On the plus side, the desert has always been good :)

Tried this for the first and last time tonight. The food is very, very bland and the dishes are pedestrian at best. It's one of those "meat sauce, pink sauce" type of places. Nothing interesting here, and the portions are enormous. So you get a whole lot of really not great food. My husband ordered the gnocci, and out came a huge plate of gnocci smothered in a flavorless, red meat sauce. There's just no reason to spend your hard earned money here, you can make similar food at home out of a can/bag/box. The service was okay, but we felt totally rushed by our server, for no good reason at all. We were there on the early side and there were not many people there. No idea why he felt the need to rush us along like he did. There was a fruit fly and a large piece of sponge like material in my red wine glass; when I brought this to my server's attention, he seemed totally stopped in his tracks, as though he had no idea what to do/say about that. He took our check and I expected him to take off the wine, but no, he just came back and asked if we wanted a free dessert "or something?" Yeah...no. So we ended up paying $70 for that craptastic meal. There has to be better Italian in Calvert County.

The de facto Italian restaurant in Calvert County (Ledo Pizza does not count). That moniker is both due to the monopoly of fine(r) dining in this region as well as having some decent food. During the 5+ years I lived in Calvert County, I watched this place grow, renovate and open up another restaurant in Prince Frederick. When it comes to the menu, the Matriciana and Tricolore are great. Nothing here will wow you to the point of food induced flavor sensory overload but more or less, everything you order should come out as expected, or slightly better. I've eaten great Italian food in downtown SF, NY and a few other cities. Mama Lucia's isn't necessarily better, or that much worse. But if you are sick of the Applebees and Ruby Tuesdays that seem to fester and spread in this particular region, Mama Lucia's is that fresh breath in the otherwise stagnant but sprawling farmland, that is Calvert County.

Mamma Lucia's is always my go-to when I want great pasta and a familiar environment. I've had numerous parties, including my rehearsal dinner, there. Every time, from a simple Friday night dinner, to a special occassion, I've been pleased. Great food. Great people.

Picked dinner up last night from the Dunkirk location and we were pleasantly surprised. We have been to the Prince Frederick one a few times and always left feeling underwhelmed. The service (on the phone and picking up) was great and quick - I didn't have a menu in front of me but the young lady on the phone helped me with some options. The food itself was really tasty, in the past (at the Prince Frederick location) we thought it was fairly bland but not so much in Dunkirk. The portions were HUGE and each meal came with a salad and bread. Looking forward to going back and dining in!

I've been coming here for years. I grew up eating the Italian food my grandfather, Luigi Sacco, used to make. Since moving to the DC area, I've been very disappointed in the Italian restaurants I've found. This isn't my grandfather's kitchen, but it's close.

Great food. You can combine any items you wish and they will prepare as requested. The tilapia and green bans are unreal be sure to get te lunch size as the dinner size is too much.

I have been coming there for years. Friendly, great food, Mr Sal(owner) always has time to say hi to the kids. They do a lot in the community as well. Definately recommend if you are looking for really good italian moderately priced.....they also bake their own bread! Sean Pierpont

Tasty, reasonably priced Italian food. Pretty straightforward stuff! They'll customize an order without blinking - I like my gnocci in marinara, not meat sauce.. no problem. As a vegetarian, I can tell you that the tricolor tortellini is plenty tasty without the ham, and the eggplant parm is *always* fantastic! Portions are more than generous... you'll have enough left over for lunch the day after.

Price: Reasonable (3.5/5) Food: Generally good, never bad. (4/5) Place: A little hokey, but clean and neat. (4/5) Notes: Want to customize your order? No problem. However, the possible variations are limited.

Good, reasonable, REAL Italian food, tucked away in a little corner of a roadside 'town center". Mamma Lucia is like a "friend with benefits"...if you don't feel like doing the work yourself, she's always there and it's always satisfying. And she's *Italian*...what more do you need?

I frequently go to the Mamma Lucia in Annapolis. I order the Shrimp and mushrooms in pink cream sauce with angel hair pasta....LOVE IT. I ordered this 2 weeks ago for carryout. There was barely anysauce and it just tasted like half cooked noodles drenched in olive oil. It was way to greasy. I think I will just stick with the one in Annapolis.

Great neighborhood place. Always good food, and good service. Excellent value -- I never feel bad about how much dinner costs there!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
