By far the best fried chicken ever... they must sprinkling some crack on it because I can't get enough... There's no way to describe it. Nothing comes close to the fried chicken here. This place is a small mom and pop store. This is the only you'll find anywhere. As you walk you'll see workers breading fresh chicken in their super secret crackalicious breading. The shop is very small and is more of a carry out type of shop. They have 2 or 3 very small table in the store. I sat and order about 10 dollars worth of food. The food and service was so good I left a 3 dollar tip. I handed the 3 dollars to the young waitress and she had a "what do I do with this" type of look on her face. I was like "that's your tip".. and she was ecstatic. Overall a great experience.

Great chicken and burgers, served very fast when you are on the go.

Great Chicken. I even enjoy the breakfast sandwiches they have.

Three words - Best Fried Chicken! I'm not sure if there's any other place on the east coast that can even come close to this chicken. Simply the best and worth the drive! Note: For dessert, head over to Jimmie Cone Soft Serve - it's just around the corner.

Love their chicken. Reminds me of English's on the eastern shore.

OVERRATED!!! Based on the other reviews I was expecting this chicken to be fried in angel tears. That just goes to show that yelpers can sometimes be hype-mongerers (sorry yelpers!) The chicken was average. Ya I said it. Average. The choice of sides is very limited. This is a country restaurant in a country town and they don't sell biscuits? Whyyyy???!!!??? Slaw was terrible and the rolls I had to pay for were weak. Not worth the drive at all.

Breakfast sandwiches make this place everything a blue collar worker could ask for a early morning commute. the chicken is phenomenal. anyone a fan of coleslaw will find this place a delight

Fried chicken is pretty good. Not the best ever, but definitely the best I've had around Damascus/Mount Airy. I've had their burgers and they aren't bad. Fries are good and steak and cheese was average. I'm sure they have some other items that are pretty good just haven't had them. Will look at reviews and try some of their best food choices. Breakfast sandwich was pretty bangin' now that I think about it. Chip beef was ok not great. Overall seems to be decent food for cheap prices.

Sorry, I don't see what all the fuss is about. The chicken is good, not great, though definitely better than anything from KFC. The skin is really crisp and the chicken is well seasoned. The sides suck, which is a downer. The woman at the counter touted how the cole slaw was homemade, so I ordered that and baked beans as the sides w/my 3 piece meal. Got home and opened the container to find that the slaw was pure mayo. If I pick up a forkful and the dressing oozes through the tines, I don't want it. The baked beans may have been good when they were fresh but I received bottom of the bucket beans that were dry and burnt. The bf ordered shoestring fries and onion rings for his sides. If memory serves, he said the fries tasted like they were from Shoppers. However, we both loved his perfectly crisp onion rings. I totes stole a couple when he wasn't looking! I was really tempted to rate Red Rooster 2 stars but the helpful staff merits an extra star. The woman I mentioned before asked us if it was our first visit and how we heard about RR, and proceeded to suggest we get meals instead of the bucket we initially ordered so we could try different sides and combos.

This place is a hidden gem. The chicken is pressurized fried and it is so crispy and surprisingly not dripping in grease. Perfectly crispy skin and moist dark meat underneath but not dripping in oil and grease! It was amazing! It could use a bit of seasoning but other than that no complaints here. The location is small and the dining room closes an hour before they close but you can always eat on the picnic tables provided outside for you. The man that took our order and the rest of the staff was very friendly. They did charge us $1 for some BBQ sauce in a small plastic cup which was crazy.

Alright, here's the skinny. Great food, chickens the bomb, breakfast is super dank, and the cherry cokes are ridiculously good. Last few times they've jacked up my orders and I just had phone tag with manager and gang that went pretty well after the initial wait since it was around dinner time that I called. He resolved my issue and we both were amenable to the solution he provided. I just wish they were closer. Anyways, thanks for keeping it real RR, and dammit check the to go orders for accuracy. *note should be 5 stars but I'd take 1.5 off for their constant screw ups with the to go orders. Since we can't take the .5 I'll leave it at 4.

Love the chicken. We go out of our way to get this chicken for all of our family event and picnic. Always a crowd pleaser and definitely a great bargain.

This was my first adventure at Red Rooster. I was in the mood to get out of the house and drove nearly 30 minutes to get here. Off the top, I would say it was worth the trip one time. I will come back, but it'll be while happen to be passing by. I ordered the standard four-piece meal. The fries seemed to be standard frozen fries that were deep fried. They were freshly cooked, nicely salted, and still hot. Though, still package fries. The coleslaw was very good, if a bit heavy on the mayo. As expected, the chicken was the star. The breeding was tasty without being overwhelming. The chicken was perfectly cooked and still juicy. Definitely worth it. Next time, I will just get the chicken and forget the meal. It was delicious and filling.

Just moved to the area. First time Roosterterian. Food was delicious and quick. Ordered take out. Steak and cheese and the wife got a hot ham and cheese. The onion rings are good and crunchy. Steak was real. They use real bacon. We also had the ranch bacon chicken balls. Everything was off the hook. Will definitely be going back.

Wake up new owners you lost another loyal customer! I've been enjoying RR for almost 23 years and last night was the final visit. I went there right after Pat and Pete sold the place and ordered what I thought was their delicious steak and cheese (why did you fix something that wasn't broke?) You changed everything! The meat was so chewy and salty plus the small little bun you put it on was awful and the sub wasn't even served as I requested so it went into the trash. I then decided to give RR another try this weekend. I wanted some of their delicious fried chicken and what I got was over cooked and so greasy with zero flavor. The meat was a horrible gray color and the bones were black and the wings were so light that there was no meat to speak of. Worse thing is you changed the batter recipe. Don't say you didn't because RR chicken you could eat without drowning in grease and it had a delicious flavor. Not anymore! Trust me, anyone thinking about dinning here go around the corner to Tom and Rays where Gary has always stayed true to his food and his customers. Sorry RR...the cluck stops here!

We have noticed no decline in the quality of the excellent chicken. We order more than once per month and have never been disappointed. Sadly we are moving about 15 miles away from Damascus (instead of 5). I was whining last night about "what were we going to do for fried chicken"! As to the negative reviews note that they most recently one time posters. When I evaluate a place as a yelp user I throw away the glowing reviews and terrible ones and look for a trend from people who have posted more than once and are not just possibly settling a gripe.

This place rocks! now this is what you call fried chicken. The menu is overwhelming but get the chicken first. I cant describe it ...its likeone of those things where you have to see for yourself. The cole slaw, macaroni salad, the potato salad yum yum! I wish they made biscuits but Ill settle for the dinner rolls...but they not offer butter..but thats ok... Their pies are homemade and its yum-o! I had the boston cream pie and it was omggggggggggggggg yum-o!! they have a few tables in the dining area but the place is small. The staff is great and friendly. If your in Damascus...stop here and then take a nice long nap.

Sorry, ravers, but I have to interject some sanity into this conversation. I live about a half mile from the Rooster and have eaten their chicken and fries many times over the past 7+ years at scouting and school events. The chicken has always been at least a little overcooked and greasy (an odd combination for fried chicken), the fries limp and greasy. I've only been in the place once--I was craving some barbecue and figured I would try something other than chicken. It was meat swimming in a vat of "sauce" that looked and tasted like mostly grease. Also, it's a really small place so the kitchen is in plain sight. There has to be a twenty-year thick layer of grime (and grease!) covering every fixed surface. I can't imagine the place having passed a health inspection since the Clinton administration.

Got our order all messed up, people were rude about fixing it, unorganized. The chicken has changed, not the same. Go to KFC!

service was not that great but the fried chicken and the beans are sooo good. fries are not worth it! limited parking out front. there are two doors (one for dine-in and one for carry out)

I had the fried chicken and potato wedges. I really enjoy the fried chicken. It is crunchy and tasty.

  • Tom M.

Definitely some of the best fried chicken around. I've stopped in this place two times now and each time the food was great. There is only three small tables to eat at inside and they have a couple of tables outside.

  • Janet C.

Seriously awesome chicken! Sides are good to just okay (really like the western fries ) but the star is the chicken. Had breakfast here once and was not impressed. If you can get past the years of accumulated grease, this place is a great stop to pick up some yummy fried chicken.

  • A J.

We went here today for the first time and it was awesome!! The chicken was so crisp and juicy! And the baked beans and Mac and chz bites were delicious!! We can't wait to go back! I will say though that it took us a minute to actually go in because the exterior is a bit questionable. But who cares because the fried chicken was AWESOME!!

  • Laura G.

Great home-cooked food. Terrible ambiance. lol Sometimes, you just want to stuff your face with tasty fried chicken and you could care less if the dining room looks like it's from the 80s (and looks like it hasn't been cleaned since then, too). Who cares? The chicken's so tasty, as are the slaw, baked beans and sweet tea. Nice how they give you a cute little dinner bun-- perfect for sopping up the drippings. Ryan is such a nice young man. He waited on us and and had intelligent, nice things to say. He made the visit extra-special. Will definitely be back!!!

Not a bad lunch spot. Got a chicken salad sandwich and a fried thigh. The sandwich was good. Kinda had a relish taste to it and a bit too much mayo for my taste but huge portion. The chicken was ok. Reminded me of royal farms. Would like to try their BBQ next time. Bonus: they have crushed ice!

This is a very small shop with 3 indoor tables as well as outdoor seating. The fried chicken was good-- thin batter and not heavily seasoned. Someone called this bland, but it was enough salt. Much better than chain restaurant fried chicken. I do like chicken from King's Bar-B-Que Pit at the Lancster Dutch market in Germantown and think the quality is on par-- just different styles. The chicken at the Lancaster (Amish) market is humongous, and I'm assured that their chicken "are fed an all vegetarian diet, with NO antibiotics, growth stimulants, hormones, animal waste or by -products, fish meal, bakery by-products or artificial ingredients." I wouldn't drive across the Bay Bridge for Red Rooster, but it is pretty good. :) The crisscut fries were good as well. Their menu also includes burgers, hotdogs, pies, and breakfast items (which are served until 11am). It is good value, and they don't charge extra for dark meat chicken.

Great little place! Food is great! Just need to move the dumpsters away from the picnic tables! Highly recommend the burgers, baked beans, coleslaw and macaroni and cheese bites! Good service!

  • Lina B.

Looks can definitely be deceiving, and this place takes the cake. Lodged in a triangular hut, this place offers fried chicken that I haven't found to be matched anywhere. Not even the Amish Market. Yes that's right. And it's been in business for as long as I can remember; I know my parents went there when they were little too. And they are old. So that is saying something. And my parents still eat it to this day, which is also saying something...that it hasn't gone downhill since. Can't say anything as far as the other items on the menu, but when it comes to chicken...Red Rooster knows where it's at. Only seating options are outside, so expect to carry out.

After many recommendations, I found the fried chicken here to be disappointing. It wasn't as crispy as it should have been, was overly greasy, and underwhelmingly bland. Royal Farms has better fried chicken than this place. Not worthy of the hype.

Picked up some Red Rooster on my way home from work last night, and it lived up to the high expectations I had for them. The fried chicken was crispy, tasty, and fresh. The slaw was delicious with a slight tang, and the french fries were just as good as McDonald's. The service was quick and the price was right. Will be a return customer.

This place is known for its down home crispy fried chicken...however, I love this place for their French Toast. I don't care how much butter they use or how many calories I'm consuming when it comes to certain foods. This is one of those meals. I will happily crawl out of bed Saturday morning, drive up the street in my pj's to pick up a large order of thick, buttery, melt in your mouth French Toast. My one recommendation would be to build a privacy fence around the dumpster out front...it's just not appetizing.

a friend brought over a bucket with full sides(1 large coleslaw, 1 potato salad, 1 other) and i had never heard of this place. one bite and your hooked. never had fried chicken this good in my life. 10x better and KFC or Popeyes. you get a lot of food for the money. a must have in the damascus area. its on the def list of sunday football food.

Frequented this place when I lived in Damascus. Fantastic pies. Chicken is great. Crispy! They've been in business a long time.

If I'm looking for some chickin' for some finger lickin' ... I hop in the car and roll out to the Red Rooster. Anyone who DARES say Wendy's or Roy Rogers or KFC is "good" needs to get some fresh drummed chicken from the Red Roosta!

Average greasy spoon. Customer service was very good. Food was not memorable including the much touted chicken. Very dirty.

Grease. And lots of it. But grease can make for some flavorful food. And the chicken here proves it. Worth a try if you're looking for chicken, or happen to be in Damascus.

Red Rooster Fried Chicken is delicious (forget the chicken restaurant chains). I can't help but gobble it up along with the shoestring fries (I try to slow down to no avail). Sweet tea is yummy too. Great deal on fast food. And they are super convenient for large orders of chicken the same day.

Situated in Damascus, MD this hole in the wall type of establishment is quite a diamond in the rough. If you are looking for a nice greasy breakfast after a night of drinking, this is your spot. There is also all types of other sandwiches and hamburgers on the menu. Everything is really inexpensive. Their fried chicken is pretty good, I wouldn't say it is the best I have ever had, but its good. Bottom line is this - This place isn't open for its ambiance. They are open because they have a wide selection of good, cheap, greasy food.

Best damn fried chicken ever. 'Nuff said.

Ok, the first time I experienced the chicken at this place, it was during a after-funeral luncheon for the sister of a good friend. Not the time to write a review..... Today, I drove almost 20 miles out of my way today driving on some of the roads that I drove when I was in high school, (Route 124/ Route 108) WOW WOW WOW WOWWWWWW I ordered the 16 piece bag of fried chicken and I've already eaten 5 pieces while binge watching some shows on Hulu. Grass mowing can wait for another day..... The chicken is not greasy, has enough salt/pepper spice.....it is EXCELLENT. Note* I have eaten them all, KFC, Popeyes, Chicken Basket....... Red Rooster is DA BOMB! Only tables outside to eat, so get this to go!!!!!

  • Moritz R.

Best fried chicken ever. Price is great, and service friendly. Small inside seating plenty of outdoors for when the weather is nice. I'm glad I moved to Damascus and the Red Rooster was here.

  • Kristi D.

This place was a nice find. I found the fried chicken to be crispy and non greasy. The flavor was enjoyable. I fries were good and perfectly salted (I like thin fries), but the baked beans tasted like they were straight from the can, which was ok. My husband said the cheeseburger sub was good & right on for the price. He liked to coleslaw and the potato salad was standard. We both enjoyed the buffalo balls, which were delicious & will definitely order those again. I loved the sweet tea. We can't wait go again to try more things & breakfast.

The fried chicken was good. The onion rings were very good. The potato wedges were boring. The service was unenthusiastic and not knowledgeable about the menu. They did recommend the chicken and their burgers. We'll give it another shot sometime.

I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place yet. Best take-out fried chicken around. Seriously, so, so good. Just the right amount of peppery spice and not at all greasy. The Red Rooster is kind of a hole-in-the-wall sort of place. It's a tiny barn-like building hidden on Damascus Blvd. I just realized the last time I was there that you can actually sit inside and eat and they've added new tables outside if you want to dig in right there. Employees are always friendly, but the wait can be taxing (especially when you're smelling fried chicken and you're hangry). Call ahead and your order will be ready when you get there!

. The fried chicken is delicious - far better than Kentucky Fried Chicken (sorry, Colonel). The wedges and onion rings are great!
